You can do so much running your own home server. It is a great tool for learning and actually storing your data. Many prefer to control their own file sharing, media streaming services, and also run their own web server hosting self-hosted services. because i Must be working on a minimum of 50 things at once or I'll explode, i think im gonna get around to setting up a pihole for my network soon and then make this old server i snagged from work into a NAS cause ive got ample big storage drives to throw in it :3c
#crow.txt#i think i have at Least one RAIDable pair? mayyyyybe 2#i think i also have one 8tb drive. i think one of the pairs i have are 4tb each?#i think i have roughly 5 spare loose fuckin hard drives. just like. around. ive accumulated#theyre in perfectly good condition and made for servers anyway. which is why ive held onto them#ive just been waiting for a) a computer to make into a nas and b) time to go about setting that up#and luck would have it i got a pretty decent old xeon machine a month ago for free. sooooooo..#now the biggest effort is to slap some drives in and find somewhere to park it forever#...man i could maybe just do the pihole FROM the server? but i dont think itd run off truenas. nvm#i can genuinely just put the big black box somewhere and put the raspberry pi on top of it. and then never touch it lmao#remote access either when needed. and otherwise leave it be

hey girlie let me see your letterboxd I want your movie recs
vamplibrarian 💋💋💋
that’s my username on plex as well if anyone uses that too!! if you don’t use plex, consider using plex lmao it’s free and has so many great films available to stream (albeit with ads, but again—it’s free! I watched a restored Multiple Maniacs the other day, and Les Diaboliques, and The Addiction!) like amazing classics and high quality films, but also an incredible range of B-movies, so if you’re into horror and offbeat film in general, it truly is the streaming platform you should get onto 😘
I’m on break from work for another week and am truly hitting the ground running with film watching this year, because once term starts I likely won’t be able to watch as many lmao so I’m. cramming in as much film watching as I can.
#asks#anonymous#sorry to shill for plex but I got my server working for remote access today#so I’m excited lmaooooo#I can watch movies with friends 🥸#film tag

#book 1: woah crazy we get to run around Disney world at night#book 4: we need to break into the server room and install a back door in the server so I can remotely access it#and prevent us all from being trapped in comas

trying to focus on my(online, untimed) final exam but my head is full of hiveswap. what the hell do jadebloods do after exile.
#ooc#what structure does the alternian government have? do they have physical records stored on some kind of bookhiveship? bookhivestation?#planet?#where do trials take place?#where does his honourable tyrrany come in#are alternian doccuments (off planet i mean) all based in the cloud?#and by the cloud i mean kept in physical servers that are accessed via colony/warships remotely#in my head im imagining a station where helmsmen are maintained and exchanged or stored. stored helms powering the empire's data servers#uuuuu#helmspa. not that i think it would be very spalike#but i do like to imagine helmsmen getting unplugged and bathed and rested every once in a while#washed up by their helmsmechanics#i imagine the mechanics socialize between ships but i also imagine most helmsmen are too drained to do much socialization#ANYWAY none of this is necessarily canon to foly's timeline im just brainstorming#i think a massive data storage space station would be cool#weapons development also. scienterrorists developing new helming technology
