We're going on an ass kicking adventure.
[First] Prev <–-> Next
#poorly drawn mdzs#mdzs#wei wuxian#lan wangji#Yes indeed this is a reference to the classic 'Kirby's fucking pissed' meme. It felt fitting given the circumstances.#Wei Wuxian is nothing but a villain now. His name is but a booeyman and scapegoat for everything that goes wrong.#It is a cruel and unusual punishment to be Irrepairable to others. That no matter what you do - you are othered and unsalvageable.#While this situation deals with necromancy & war & politics...boy does it ever mirror how modern drama campaigns go.#I wonder if MXTX did that on purpose? Considering how SVSSS talks about the relationships between authors and their fans/work -#Its stands to reason that WWX story is indeed a parallel for how the public prefers black and white & sensationalist views of people.#People are heroes or villains and trying to think about the nuance is too much work.#And it does not matter what the truth or lies are. The rumour exists and so it must hold truth.#It feels like someone dropped a poorly researched callout post on WWX on twitter that went viral.#80% of the people don't even know who he is but are still leaving him death threats.#“Guys I know we all used to really love WWX's content but I heard he unethically sourced his bones for his last art installation...”#Okay actually he might indeed do unethical bone sourcing. I need to think longer on what the hyper-specific hobby drama might be.#And a huge shout out to LWJ who is right in the vicinity watching this happen in horror. *That* is a specially kind of torment too.

doodled your little guys!!! I have so many thoughts about them. As someone who lives in Italy it has been absolutely wonderful seeing your characters express the country's culture and history!!! It's not often that I see characters be based off Italian history in such an artistic manner.. But that might be me living under a rock, LOL. Anyhow, keep doing what you do, YOU ROCK!!!!
.
#aaa you're too sweet! ;_;#and the art!!#I don't know what you did but I love the way they look in your style#they seem so expressive and alive and your linework has such wonderful almost animated fluidity to it#that swooping line from the tip of Machete's ear to his cheek fluff? such a shape#their faces are priceless#Vasco's little blep and Machete's blush and squiggly mouth#thank you so much! you've warmed my heart#gift art#limelemonchi#Vasco#Machete#own characters#it genuinely means a lot to me when someone from Italy says they like my dogs#I'm Finnish so I'm never going to have the insider experience and the full picture of someone who lives there#and sometimes it really worries me like what if I get things wrong and I'm not only embarrassing myself#but also disappointing people who thought I do my research well#but I'm doing my best and I always welcome feedback and tips to make the setting more believable if you want to give them#whether it's the original canon or the modern au#I mean it when I say the history and culture of Italy are extraordinarily rich and interesting#I've been reading about them long before these two came to be#it's a meeting spot for many of my special interests some of which I've had since I was a preschooler

As a foreigner, I am curious. What are the main differences between kokoshniks and other types of headresses?
Why thank you for asking!1 First and foremost, kokoshnik is a festive headdress of a married woman. It is essentially a hat and is meant to cover the hair — a huge difference in status (unmarried girls wear a single braid, married women pin hair around the head in two braids and cover it). It comes in an amazing variety of shapes depending on a region, though the south of Russia had their own amazing thing for most of history. We're used to see the ornate arch of kokoshnik, but the back was also very rich.

All the headdresses that have just a front piece and don't cover the top&back of the head would be a venets/koruna etc (wreath/crown) — a headband, a young woman's festive and wedding headgear. Those can also get ridiculously high and wide, but don't provide full coverage. They could also be paired with a braid decoration.

Now, the mixing up starts as early as late XVIII for aristocracy and XIX for everyone else. Thanks to Peter I's "embrace Europe, reject tradition" policy the upper class was pretty much entirely cut from Russian traditional culture. When the "slavic" style came back in trend (several times during wars) it ignored all original symbolism and was heavily changed to fit international beauty standards of the time. By the time of Nicholas II (and yet another wave of slavomania pre-revolution) every court headdress we see is clearly a headband/diadem in its structure but every description states "kokoshnik".

Important note: in 1830s court dress regulations there is still a clear difference between kokoshnik and a headband for married and unmarried ladies accordingly. However, every history text elects to call every headpiece a "modernized kokoshnik" In the latest years the "kokoshnik" (BUT ACTUALLY A VENETS/HEADBAND) became an insanely popular accessory in Russia and is made in tons of materials but in a very limited number of shapes. The results vary from beautiful to silly to atrocious (I'll spare you from looking at patriotic take on the mater). I'd love to wear one, but, to quote marquis de Custine, "it flatters beautiful faces and makes ugly ones even more so"

In short (HA) — kokoshnik is a full-covering headdress for married women. Every young heroine wearing what looks like a kokoshik from the front but sports a braid — wears a venets. Thankfully there are also a lot of artists dedicated to keeping the traditional crafts and garments alive, like Johann Nikadimus who does both replicas and modern designs and never fails to call things accordingly. Its breathtaking and very expensive, just like it was before. About southern kichka headdress
#kokoshnik#russia#russian culture#russian history#slavic#venets#historical clothing#historical fashion#inkyami researches#now the modern minimalistic headbands are actually extremely similar in style to the ones worn by the last princesses#so you could technically count that as historical inspiration#naturally my peeve with terminology comes from close proximity to modern art#both semi-historical fantasy and folklore-inspired#and I believe it's important to differentiate which epoch is referenced#since most often its pre-Peter I Rus none of the shifting terminology excuses fly here#like#if you are taking an inspiration from Nicholas II court and draw a 'kokoshnik' it sort of makes sence#their terminology was wrong! And so is yours. Consistency!

giving more info on cowboy!caleb au..
caleb used to do bullriding, but a pretty gnarly injury to his right arm caused him to stop. he recovered after a long while but has stopped bullriding — he still participates in rodeos (roping competitions mainly) every once in a while tho! he's always amongst the winners and often spotted tending to the horses after the rodeo. his favorite sport is barrel racing, and ambrosia is a local champion.
other than that, he chooses to stay and help out at the ranch — even though he does have a college degree in aerospace engineering, mind you. it feels like home, and although he isn't exactly an introvert, there's a lot of comfort in being surrounded by the animals (plus he couldn't possibly leave ambrosia to another cowboy's hands — that's his darling horse).
speaking of his horse, ambrosia is a black thoroughbred mare. his father told him to be careful with picking a name since he couldn't change it afterward (cowboy superstition), and young caleb decided to name her ambrosia because of the star marking on her face that looked a bit like an apple shape. honeycrisp was too common of a name, but ambrosia flowed nicely — he could also call her rosie. she's an insanely smart mare, and caleb's had her since he was 14. she's a bit wary of strangers and has a hard time letting anyone but caleb ride her.
caleb's also pretty popular within the community! i mean, who wouldn't fall for that smile.. but he genuinely is a breath of fresh air, and the elders adore him. lots of the older gentlemen say that he reminds them of real cowboys, their own grandfathers. he's an honest and hard-working man who gets along with kids and adults alike and a gorgeous face — those who dislike him are few and far between.
#⋆ pomme rambles#⋆ sky's the limit#⋆ cowboy's call#YEEEEEEHAW oh i love cowboys so bad u guys#i did a bunch of research for this but also i am no expert pls feel free to correct me (especially on the horse stuff!!)#in my head ambrosia is an ebony black horse with a white mark on the forehead. google said thoroughbreds are popular so i went with that#but i have no knowledge of horses#i love horses tho even if i never got the chance to ride one.. my favorite breed is andalusian...#anyhow let me research some more about cowboys and make some cute little visuals and i'll write about it properly hehe..#also . this is a modern au!!! i dont have the mental bandwidth to research 1850s cowboys..#on that note zayne is there too btw he's a doctor still and him and caleb are childhood friends!! they used to ride together#when zayne visits from the city he often goes riding with caleb and is a good rider. they're besties because i said so

It's really funny working on a paper about monstrosity in the Early Modern era as it relates to gender and disability because there are historians (including some I am citing as important sources) with no connection to monster studies who want to talk about the same social issues I do in the era but are also very quick to put in one million disclaimers that "by the way I promise I don't think trans or disabled people are monsters, other people just did then so this is what my sources say :("
And like there are absolutely interesting conversations to be had about what reclaiming monstrosity means and if there are risks inherent to it, and certain language to avoid or minimize using, and that sort of thing. But also as someone whose whole project revolves around the connections between the these subjects and the fact that they can just as easily be empowering as they can stigmatizing it does sort of feel like I'm busting into these discussions and being like "Well I think that monsters are COOL and POWERFUL and that we should ALL want to be monsters actually." I feel like Laios Touden.
#my argument is more nuanced than that i promise#and also draws on the work of a lot of scholars who are working in a similar vein (though mostly in monster studies)#but because my exact combination of early modern history + monster studies + queer and trans studies + disability studies is fairly unique#i have also read a lot of sources that have very different aims in order to do research for this one

I graduate college so I don't have to write essays or do research anymore.
And then I instantly get sucked into research so I can write a historical au.
#this is about despair#of course it is#if my brain wont write words then i will read words#im making better notes than i did for my theory courses#love the US educational system...they beat you into the perfect students and it never leaves you#also shows yall how bad i was at research when i had to do it because i JUST learned about the national archive#like.....Ive just read a whole book for free#i mean i had to sacrifice my spine to do it but she was already dead so its fine#i now know a light amount of information about this topic and i intend to look up more#yall catch me watching youtube videos about historical leather braiding practices#the most fun im having with this au is that i took courses on american history and modern history#but all of those classes conveniently skipped over all information about Mexico (save for “faught for texas”)#and now i get to learn all of his amazing culture and history#and also native history!!!!!#native folklore is so cool wtf?!?!#anyways im having so much fun learning all these niche things just so my minecraft youtuber can bring it up for two sentences in my fanfic#wild ride

logically i know modern horses aren't native to the americas like that was a whole Thing but it causes such cognizant dissonance to think of there being wild horses in europe. like that can't be right. there's no fucking cowboys there.
#starscream.txt#researching breeds of ponies for unicorn oc reasons#(i need a size comparison)#saw one labeled 'wild horse of france'#and had to stare at it for a few minutes for it to sink in#LIKE YEAH I KNOW HORSES ARE NATIVE TO EUROPE. THAT'S WHERE MODERN HORSES ARE FROM#I KNEW THAT#but at the same time that can't be right!!!
