Mental Health Tip
Asking is the antidote to anxiety
Tumblr media Tumblr media
6/100 days of productivity • 30-Oct-23, Monday
We often get caught up in our thoughts, especially the spiraling ones, and we forget that there is a way out. The spiral has a way out, but we think it's a circle. Sometimes, the way out is to ask for help and take a helping hand.
It is impossible to see this when you are in the spiral. You only see the light after you get out. That is the most annoying, trickiest part of this anxiety business.
Today I took a chance. I had been worrying about facing my PhD advisor for weeks because I had made no progress. And I couldn't move a bit forward because I was paralyzed by guilt. The only way to break this loop was to talk to my advisor -- accept that I needed help and reach out to him.
Man, that made a huge difference! It took a huge weight off of my chest and I could sit at my desk without feeling the urge to bolt out the door. And today's productivity is all because I asked.
About today:
Talk to my advisor about my anxiety and ask for support This was an unexpected good thing. I did not think talking to my advisor would lift my mood or even give me the motivation to work!
Start working on project 2. Spend time on the code, and ask for help if stuck • If the work flows, go with the flow (It did! so I added a few tasks) • Get the code running: memRC for time series prediction
Return to room @ 4:30 pm. Relax and watch Coursera lectures Chose to stay in the lab and work on the code
Work for 30 mins on Mindfulness course
Turn off phone by 9:30 pm. Wind down, meditate for 10 mins.
Sleep with guided meditation

Earlier this week my laptop sustained water damaged. This has completed upended my work flow. Doesn't really matter though because deadlines and advisors don't change because you no longer have the proper tools. So now I'm looking for a work flow that is just, good enough to get the job done.

I am planning to initiate a content structure with the aims of
1) improve epidemiological knowledge
2) improve application of epidemological research methodology to address pertinent health concerns
3) professional development
Often my twitter serves as a think pad for launching ideas, bridging connections and keeping a finger on the pulse of what’s occuring in the cultural zeitgeist of health, security and social justice. I am going to work to transfer the knowledge from twitter to tumblr through literature reviews, informative inquiries and field notes (while continuing to supplement the aesthetic of course)

First Evidence of intentional communication outside human language were from gray ape studies, and more than 80 such signals have now been identified. Many of these gestures are shared across non-human apes, including distantly related apes such as chimpanzees and orangutans.
Apes has rich repertoires of these gestures have been described in all ape species, bar one: us. Given that the majority of great ape gestural signals are shared, and their form appears biologically inherited, this creates a conundrum: Where did the ape gestures go in human communication? Here, we test human recognition and understanding of 10 of the most frequently used ape gestures. We crowdsourced data from 5,656 participants through an online game

Why self-diagnosed autistics are valid
Tumblr media
medical diagnosis can be expensive
humans are the experts on their own minds
family may prevent assessment
diagnosis criteria is a poor checklist of stereotypes
diagnosis criteria ignores gender, race, sexuality, culture & more
medical diagnosis confirms autism, but doesn't create it
discrimination within the medical profession may prevent diagnosis.
Assessment waiting lists often long
medical trauma may make assessment unfeasible

Hello everyone!
My name is Amina and I am a BSc Psychology with Honours student at the University of Hertfordshire. I am also the principal researcher of a study that aims to investigate whether judging category relatedness within semantic memory can be influenced by the level of typicality the items have alongside whether high versus low autistic traits have any effect on the performance of different types of processing.
I am currently taking volunteers for this online study. Any adults aged 18 to 65 can volunteer and you do not need an official Autism diagnosis to take part.
In the study, you will be given an item/ definition/ scenario at the top of your screen and will have to decide which of two following words match best to that using your keyboard. After that is completed you will be given the RAADS-14 questionnaire to complete.
It will take roughly 15 minutes to complete. However, a maximum of 30 minutes is given for the entire study to be completed including the information sheet, consent form, debrief sheet, and the “breaks” given (which are just for momentarily resting your eyes and hands), otherwise I cannot use your data. Please note that this study cannot be completed on a mobile phone or tablet, it must be done on a computer/laptop as the keyboard is required for the study’s completion.
You can completed this study at anytime until 23:59 GMT on Friday 1st of March here:
https://research.sc/participant/login/dynamic/0D915D45-8D85-44F9-9B63-376AF0C70573
This study has been approved by the Ethics Committee at the University of Hertfordshire and is also being conducted under the supervision of Dr. Nicholas Shipp.
Your participation is very important for this study and is very much appreciated.
Thank you for your time!
Many Thanks
Amina
EDIT: Study is now no longer taking participants!!! Thank you all who took part and spread the word of my study, it definitely means a lot to me 💟

Woke: Alhaitham sold his grandmother's house and moved into the research center because he didn't like living in an empty home with so many memories.
Also woke: Alhaitham sold his grandmother's house and moved into the research center because it was the last remaining tie he had to Kaveh, and taking ownership of it ensured that Kaveh would have to communicate with him again at least one more time.

Favorite kind of week: Zoom calls, books and checklists
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Update for week 18th Nov - 24th Nov
Started my visa application for my upcoming Europe trip (the Workshop is for a week and the location is lovely!). Made a checklist and applied for permission from the university, printed all the forms and collecting other documents. I love the task, but it drains me a bit!
I'm working on a collaborative project with quite an international team and we had our first discussion meeting this week. Excited!
Met with my mentor from the Supernova Foundation (a mentoring network for women in Physics). She's ao insightful and conversing with her always gives me a big picture and a lot of clarity. So grateful for her ♥️
Read a book after a loooong time. It's The Running Grave by Robert Galbraith. I've been waiting for the book's release but couldn't get my hands on a copy sooner. Absolutely enjoyed the read and felt so alive (I missed reading!)

Wait... Dream was born on August 12, 1999 and Dream was arrested in the Disc Finale on January 20, 2021 soo... wait, wait, wait, that means he was only 21 when he was imprisoned for life in a small lava covered box!... Did I do that math right? 21?! Man was barely able to drink legally in the United States and they gave him a life sentence in a boiling cell with nothing but lava, raw potatoes, a clock, and some books?!... oh my god...

I don’t like when people ask how many books you plan to read/have read this year one because I think that’s a weird relationship to have to books and two because I think even reading a chapter or a portion of something is valuable. this is especially true with non-fiction but even with fiction I think any amount you read, even if you don’t read the entire thing, is not a failure or ‘incomplete’
