The Hollywood Beach Resort was built 98 years ago and is the epitome of old Florida.
Aside from being a hotel, the property has lived many lives. It was once the home of a naval training facility during World War II, a massive convention center in the 50s and Florida Bible College in the 70s. In recent years, it transitioned back into a hotel, timeshare and condominium complex. Some units have even been rented as Airbnbs.
In May 2023, the city of Hollywood declared the property unsafe and forced all guests to vacate the building. Currently, the future of the once-grand, now-decaying hotel is uncertain. A group of developers are hoping to buy the hotel to demolish it and build two luxury condominium buildings. In order for this to happen, at least 80% of the condominium owners would have to agree to sell.
Underneath the hotel is the dead, borderline-abandoned Oceanwalk Mall. A review from two days ago says that the mall is now being used by the military for training. Other reviews state that the property is "at the end of its life," a "ghost town" and "haunted". Located in Hollywood, Florida. Sources: 1, 2 + 3

I had this dream that I was in a Michael Bay movie and was distinctly bothered by how bad it was. It followed this family that was developing this MYSTERIOUSLY ABANDONED stretch of Yucatán coast into a resort and I kept on being like “come on, that’s ridiculous and racist.” Then the inevitable disaster struck when there was suddenly a NUCLEAR BLAST off the coast and the movie suddenly switched to graphics fully taken from like a Civilization type game as it did a flashback about how Conquistadors in search of the Fountain of Youth (don’t ask me) landed there, then went all the way around to Florida where they found a genuine goddess, tricked her in order to get immortality, then somehow took her back around to Yucatán where she had lain imprison until the resort development had somehow released her and she rose in this nuclear fire to destroy the world. There was way more, mutated sharks, something about freezing the entire strip of coast, polar bears, another, semi benevolent goddess, but as it kept introducing each element I kept on wondering what the run time of this movie and how on earth it was gonna be able to satisfyingly resolve any of these way way too many plot threads.

During the Florida Land Boom of the 1920s, entrepreneurs and real estate developers deployed creative tactics to woo potential clients [...] to invest in Florida land. [...] At Miami Beach, where Indianapolis-based entrepreneur Carl Fisher invested millions in resort development during the 1920s, tourists encountered a surprising attraction: elephants. Two elephants were brought to Miami Beach. They were named Carl II (named after Fisher himself) and Rosie [...]. Seeing the elephants’ work at Miami Beach positions these more-than-human actors in the histories of leisure in South Florida, as they signal the uncomfortable degree to which work and leisure were deeply entangled in this place. [...]
Carl II, came to Miami Beach from Peoria, Illinois, in February of 1921. According to the Miami Daily Metropolis, [E.B.], who owned several circuses in the Midwest, gifted the elephant to Carl Fisher [...]. “I am going to get a million dollars’ worth of advertising out of this elephant.” [...] Carl II also carried advertisements on boards hung over a saddle. [...] Infantilizing Carl II, as reporters often did in the Miami newspapers, seems to have [...] helped uphold his value as a toy of sorts, which supported the idea of Miami Beach as a “playground,” as it was called at the time. [...] [A]rticles stressed, however, that the elephant’s education would involve more than “play.” The Miami Daily Metropolis reported that “Carl, the elephant will be put to work.” This is coupled with language that strikes a disciplinary tone; the reporter stated that “he must earn his keep.” [...] Such work ranged from moving portable houses on the beach to pulling presses on the polo field. Carl also cleared mangrove swamps to make land suited for residential development [...].
Tumblr media
Like other resorts that pandered to a growing middle-class market for leisure in the roaring 1920s, Fisher’s venture on Miami Beach was carefully curated as a “playground to the World.”
Just as Henry Flagler had separated “work” from “leisure” by building Palm Beach separate from West Palm Beach in the 1890s, Fisher kept his beach workers’ labor largely invisible - except when it enhanced the tourist experience of its middle- and upper-middle class clientele, as when the elephants caddied on the golf course or stomped divots on the polo field. Fisher’s plan was to attract visitors to Miami Beach to come back year after year [...] [and] to prompt permanent settlement in his island subdivisions. These subdivisions, like his hotels, were meant to be exclusive. [...]
And while this landscape depended on an African American workforce, the city enacted Ordinance 457 in 1936, requiring the more than 5,000 service workers at the time to “register.” In addition to being photographed and fingerprinted, Black workers had to carry identification with them. [...]
---
In March of 1921, Carl II lived at the local fairgrounds [...]. An article in the Miami Daily Metropolis that celebrated Carl II’s presence there also noted that “the fair doors are not open to the colored population this year.” [...]
Part attraction and part workhorse, Carl II moved across spaces dividing work and leisure, non-human and human, and Black and white on which Miami Beach’s status as a “tropical paradise” for the white leisured classes depended. [...] Carl II was shipped off to the Circus in 1926, the same year that a devastating hurricane struck the beach and brought the “boom” years to an end. His companion, Rosie, eventually met the same fate. [...] While Miami Beach was developed as a playground for the white leisure class, its success was inextricably bound with the labor force that built and sustained it.

Mike Windgren's Rank
Tumblr media
Disclaimer: For my tier list I’m basing this off of a one on one fight with no weapons and no outside interference. If a character has to rely on a weapon they’re ranked lower. If a character has to fight more than one person at a time, I’d look at it on a case by case basis. Age, size and general background are factors that will be taken into consideration. Since a lot of those details are going to be up to interpretation as these are characters and not real people, feel free to share your own thoughts.
There are some context clues we get about when this movie takes place. For instance there's the fact that Mike's parents live in Tampa, Florida. Tampa experienced a significant amount of growth in both population and economically between the 1950s-1960s. Acapulco also experienced a significant amount of growth to the point where foreign countries started investing into the city. With a rise in tourism, Acapulco had the ability to invest in fancy hotels and beach resorts. And then there's the circus including the flying trapeze. While circuses that heavily involved animal acts and "freak shows" were starting to decrease in popularity, family owned circuses still had success by focusing on human performances like acrobatic stunts in the 1960s. What causes me to think this is late 1962/early 1963 is the small pink Jeep toy on the receptionist's desk. That toy was made by Tonka and was released in 1962. Since Tonka was an American company it isn't hard to assume it took some time for Mexico to have them.
Even though Mike is clearly old enough to legally buy alcohol and work out of the country, we don't have that many clues on his age. We can only guess based the physical prowess that's necessary for a trapeze act. While it isn't out of the question for middle aged trapeze artists to exist, it's not a secret that being a professional trapeze artist is age-sensitive. It's also been shown by scientific studies and by sports statistics that athletic performance in men tend to decrease once they're past 30. Since Mike's accident involving the death of his brother was never labeled as an age related issue, we can assume that Mike is below the age of 30. Mike having to physically hold the weight of another grown man with just his wrists means he's essentially a powerlifter which requires a combination of elastic yet well developed muscles and tendons. This is why at an Olympic level athletes hit their peak at 25. Given that Elvis himself was 28 at the time of filming, we can assume Mike is that age as well since he would still be in his peak years.
Tumblr media
This is actually a great example of a fight that fits into the rules I established above. Mike threw a punch and Moreno reacted with a punch in return. No one interfered and no one used a weapon. We actually get a clear winner because Mike managed to cause Moreno a significant injury that made him unable to fight. It's actually realistic for Moreno to break something in his forearm due to the fall after being knocked over a set of furniture. Even though he was falling at a weird angle, he would still have that instinct most if not all humans have to use his hands to brace his fall which would therefore increase the risk of forearm/wrist injuries.
You can assume Mike and Moreno are equal since a diver has to be a strong swimmer and climber. Since Mike was able to win fair and square, this would give him a showing. I say fair and square because Moreno had just as much of a chance to injure Mike under the same circumstances.
Tumblr media
Mike's physical appearance indicates that he has well formed, lean muscles in his arms. If he has the strength to consistently support the weight of a fully grown man with really nothing but his arms, he must be strong. However, in his only fight against Moreno he basically won because of luck. Moreno is basically a strong, yet otherwise average man.
Because I consider them to be evenly matched, that would mean Mike is also a strong, yet otherwise average man. Can he win fights against stronger opponents? Possibly since again, anyone can get a lucky hit in regardless of their actual skill level. Therefore, I would put him in B tier since we have no canon information to suggest he has the professional military or fight training characters in A tier would.

Hey Guys, I need a big favor. it’s been brought to my attention that folks are trying to put resort style HOTELS, pickleball courts, and golf courses on the land of several Florida State Parks.
Even if you are not a Florida citizen, most people can connect with the fact that state parks are meant to connect you to nature. They’re not meant to be the home of resorts and golf courses, they are meant to be the home of wildlife.
I’m not good with words, and frankly I rarely intervene with things like this, but this hits hard. My best memories have been in our state parks. I’ve had picnics and enjoyed long walks in the wide open fields that some parks have.
If you are able, I BEG you, please sign this petition and email our governor Ron DeSantis in favor Against this.
They may only be doing small parks now, but if they’re okay with this, it won’t be long before they start targeting more well-known parks. I don’t know if this is normal in other states but it’s is Not Normal in Florida and I refuse to let it ever be. Thank you for everyone’s support and please reblog this to reach more people.

idk if you’re still doing the fanfic title ask thing but if you are, mattdrai + neutral zone
i feel like this would be a sweet, funny little story where they have their bye weeks at the same time and coincidentally wind up on vacation at the same resort. big romcommy vibes. more of a @bropunzeling style joint than my own usual style, but i would do my best 😂
obviously leon's there with connor, third-wheeling with him and lauren, since they're coming straight from the all-star game. matthew, also coming straight from the asg, is flying in to meet up with some friends — maybe brady's bye week was before the asg, but robby thomas, or some florida pals, or whoever are there. mostly i just want him to be free of familial obligations so that he can let his freak flag fly.
anyway, the all-star weekend was good for everyone involved — let's say this is set this coming year, so no one was thrilled about going to cold toronto and losing out on three extra days of real vacation, not like florida, which was basically just extra vacation, but it was fun enough. neither the pacific or the atlantic won; none of our main cast here became the main character of the weekend, but there were some fun moments. matthew and leon didn't really talk during the asw, didn't really talk during last year's asw (although, to be fair, matthew was very busy playing host last year), because the thing is, they don't really have any reason to interact now that they're not in the same division.
leon didn't think he'd miss it, but he kind of misses it. the battle of alberta isn't nearly as exciting now. matthew pissed him off a lot when they were younger, yeah, but he has always been fun to play against. the 2020 asg was the first time they ever had a real conversation and it wasn't a big thing or anything, but it was kind of a turning point in the somewhat one-sided animosity, and by the time the 2022 playoffs rolled around, they had developed this kind of almost-friendly (slightly flirty?) respect. matthew still pissed him off on the ice, yeah, but they had some laughs, too, at faceoff circles, between whistles. leon started to believe the people that said, well, if he was on your team you'd love him.
and then matthew got himself traded to florida, built himself a happy new life there, became the main character of the nhl, etc. leon's not not happy for him, but maybe, when he thinks about it in certain moods, he does prickle a little at how easily matthew left the alberta of it all behind.
meanwhile matthew figures they were all just glad to be rid of him. he's been having a great time in florida. a great enough time that it's mostly healed the sting of how his last season in calgary ended and how frustrating his career there was sometimes. there was a time in his life when he would have really, really liked for leon draisaitl to like him, but he's totally past that now.
anyway, due to a series of somewhat comedic near-misses at the airport, they don't realize they're going to the same place until they get onto the plane and they're all in first class: matthew, leon, connor, lauren. everyone's like uhhhhh ?? but matthew makes a joke, retreats to his seat behind them, puts his headphones on, doesn't make conversation except to charm the flight attendants. when they land, connor asks him where he's headed, if he wants to share their cab. matthew politely declines. he's not trying to be anti-social, he's just not trying to intrude on someone else's vacation.
but, of course, the resort isn't huge. it takes, like, a day for matthew's group to run into leon again — at the tiki bar on the beach, where leon is loitering even though lauren and connor are down by the water, because he's feeling particularly third wheel-y today. matthew had the right idea, finding a whole group to glom onto after the asg. all this to say, he's kind of relieved to see other people he kind of knows, even if it all feels a little awkward. but hey, they're on vacation. everyone can be friends here.
cue a beachy vacation montage of drinking and laughing and playing volleyball on the beach and splashing into the water — leon (and often connor and lauren — i feel like there are other wags around with matthew's group of friends) gets kind of folded into the group, and here on vacation away from all the hockey stuff, past rivalries, etc, it turns out that they just kind of click. they're both super competitive, even about dumb things like beach volleyball — but that's fun when the stakes are low, when they're on the same team. matthew's always checking in to make sure leon's having a good time if he's hanging with them while connor and lauren are off doing coupley things — he's always making sure everyone's having a good time, really, and leon starts to really get why his teammates in florida talk about him the way they do. leon is surprisingly funny and surprisingly affectionate when he doesn't want to kill you, and matthew keeps getting that old familiar feeling that he'd really like for leon to like him.
it's only like two days in when they get tipsy and hook up, which is probably a good thing, because it's so mind-bogglingly hot that if they'd held out until the end of the week and just did it once at the end, they would have both gone a little crazy not getting to do it again right away. cue all sorts of sneaking off to have all sorts of gross, sweaty vacation sex, and maybe getting a little obsessed with each other in the process.
the last night of the trip, the whole combined group of them has a big dinner on the beach and everyone just hangs out until late, long after the sun goes down. matthew and leon keep not-so-subtly making eyes at each other, trying to gauge when they're gonna sneak off to go wreck each other, but matthew is also a little in his head about this being the last day of vacation, because he's 100% sure this is gonna be a "what happened in bye week stays in bye week" situation, which is how it should be, anything else would be too complicated and make no sense, but he knows that despite knowing all that logically, it's gonna do a number on him to fly home alone after this whirlwind — whatever it is, with leon, so at some point he disappears, and after a while leon finds him sitting down by the water a little ways away, looking out at the ocean.
leon goes to sit with him. kisses his shoulder, but doesn't try to make conversation. he kind of thinks he knows what matthew's thinking, but it takes him a while to figure out what to say about it in a way that won't be too embarrassing if he's wrong. eventually he settles on, "we should do this again sometime."
matthew looks over, surprised. "you'd want to?"
leon shrugs. "i mean. it's been fun, right?"
and then they make out on the beach, and then they go back to one of their rooms and have sex, and then shower sex, and then morning sex, all of it increasingly clingy in a way they will not discuss until, like, sexcation #4 at least, but leon does kiss matthew's cheek when they part ways at the airport later, and matthew's friends tease him mercilessly about it for the rest of the day.

Amee Vanderpool at SHERO:
Congressional disclosures by the US Senate and House — that detail the report of gifts received from outside organizations — show that the Conservative Partnership Institute (CPI) has sponsored elaborate trips held between February 2021 and April 2024. The CPI, which describes itself as the the place “Where Conservatives Go to Win,” advertises that they “train, equip, and unite Conservative leaders in Washington and across the country.” Essentially, the lobbying group is a conservative bankroll that seeks to cement a political bond between the mainstream Republican Party and far right election-denial extremists. Between February 2021 and April 2024, the CPI held 21 disclosed events for Conservative Members of Congress and US Senators, based on House Ethics Committee filings provided by Congressional staff. Thanks to the mandatory description required for each filing of the travel gift, its estimated value, the identity of the donor and the date received, we know that CPI held lavish training sessions for congressional staff at their lush Maryland ranch, as well as retreats at several luxurious Florida resorts.
While the submitted record of disclosure forms for these events are online in separate House and Senate repositories, and available for download, there is no way to directly search through the forms by using a specific term or donor organization. I have compiled a list of all of the disclosed CPI trips for Members and staff of the US House for the Year 2024 here, so that you can easily view who was in attendance at these locations during the specified times. The CPI is currently led by former Trump Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, who was recently indicted in Arizona for his alleged role in a fake electors scheme in 2020, and former Heritage Foundation president Jim DeMint. At their lavish events, the Conservative political powerhouse enlists approved organizations and far-right extremist organizations to help promote their agenda in a resort vacation setting.
[...] The main objective for CPI is to further develop MAGA partnerships and implement a stronger network that was not in place during the Trump administration. Meadows, was critical in implementing Trump’s agenda which included the "Schedule F" executive order. This ongoing plan was developed and refined in secret over most of the second half of Trump’s term, and launched 13 days before the 2020 election with the goal of radically reshaping the federal government and eradicating thousands of civil servants in order to fill career posts with Trump lackeys and his America First ideology. Ultimately, this elite group provides the resort clubhouse for a secret fraternity of Trump loyalists, who are currently developing the Human Resources department that will implement the MAGA infrastructure to incorporate the federal government.
The Conservative Partnership Institute (CPI) is creating an army of far-right MAGA loyalists to serve in government roles.

the florida dept of environmental protection decided they're going to build pickeball courts and resort hotels into the state parks. meeting for comments is in five days. five days. they 100% know what they're doing and how evil it is. it's so evil i don't even know what i would say at the meeting. like you have environmental protection in your name. what do you think that means? developers have crawled into state office because of the fuckwit governor and i don't know what to do. same feeling i get when someone asks me to call my rep about an issue--he doesn't care, none of them care.
i better go to camp helen and grayton beach again and take more pics so i can remember what it looked like. because walton county is in a state of complete capture by developers and i have zero doubt this will go through.

Hungarian government officials condemned the European Commission’s decision on Monday that commissioners will skip informal Council of the EU meetings hosted by Budapest during its six-month presidency, in response to Viktor Orban’s unsanctioned meetings since July 1 with foreign leaders such as Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping.
“The @EU_Commission cannot cherry pick institutions [and member states] it wants to cooperate with. Are all #Commission decisions now based on political considerations?” the Hungarian prime minister’s political director, Balazs Orban, wrote on X.
On Monday evening, Eric Mamer, chief spokesman for EU Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen, wrote that, “In light of recent developments marking the start of the Hungarian Presidency, the President has decided that @EU_Commission will be represented at senior civil servant level only during informal meetings of the Council. The College visit to the Presidency will not take place.”
The “developments” Mamer was referring to were the meetings that Viktor Orban has held with the leaders of Ukraine, Russia, China and Azerbaijan, as well as a visit to Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, since Hungary assumed the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU on July 1.
While these trips were all technically bilateral, Orban created the impression that he was representing the EU on a ‘peace mission’ to help negotiate a ceasefire in the war in Ukraine by displaying the bloc’s flags and logos.
“Chinese and Russian media have falsely reported that Orban travelled as an EU representative – causing outrage from EU leaders and heads of government,” said Armida van Rij, senior research fellow at Chatham House.
Alejandro Esteso Perez, a political scientist and researcher, described Orban’s actions as “trolling his EU counterparts, as he is playing not only with the ambiguity of (not) representing the EU vis-à-vis the three leaders, but also through this ‘surprise factor’ where we did not find out about these meetings until a few hours before they took place.”
Some attributed the EU Commission’s unprecedented decision to send only bureaucrats to the meetings hosted by Budapest to von der Leyen’s re-election bid to lead the EU Commission for another five-year term. Von der Leyen still needs the approval of the European Parliament, which is generally not well disposed to the Hungarian prime minister and his Eurosceptic government.
“The @EU_Commission announced that it will boycott the Hungarian Presidency of the Council. This is clearly a part of @vonderleyen’s election campaign. We have become used to her using the EU institutions, especially against #Hungary for political blackmail and pressure. This is unacceptable and goes against the very essence of European cooperation,” Kinga Gal, an MEP from Orban’s Fidesz party, wrote on X.

Omg what happened with desantis
okay i’m gonna explain this to the best of my knowledge BUT it’s a really complex legal situation that i don’t understand all the intricacies of so i def encourage you to read a comprehensive article like this one for a more solid explanation. but basically: since the 60s disney world has existed in a district called reedy creek, which oversees the infrastructure and development of disney world’s property. if you’ve ever been to dw, you know that its property is massive and basically like its own functioning city. there are expansive roads between parks and resorts, a hospital, a fire station, residencies, etc. all operated by disney and overseen by reedy creek. the reedy creek district isn’t owned by the disney corporation, per say, but its board is elected by the land owners. disney officials and higher-ups make up 2/3 of the land owners. SO, for years disney could basically operate however it wanted without needing approval from the state of florida the way other theme parks do like say, six flags or universal studios.
recently, disney opposed the don’t say gay bill (as a financial decision, don’t get it twisted) and desantis’ response was to take control of reedy creek. he did exactly that and renamed the district “the central florida tourism oversight district” which is operated by a board of people desantis hand picked himself. and he hand picked The most vile evil republicans who backed don’t say gay and are actively supporting desantis’ entire evil platform. this was purely an act of spite against disney for not backing don’t say gay. and for awhile there, it looked like desantis’ new board on his new district would be able to really fuck disney over and limit what they could build & develop & desantis even said he would maintain like “christian family values” in disney entertainment which….. he has no legal ability to do.
BUT as of today it’s been discovered that prior to this takeover by desantis, disney signed legally binding agreements with reedy creek that basically gave them total control over the board for the next 30 years, no matter what. desantis’ new board just discovered this, and it looks as of now like they’re actually powerless beyond issues like road maintenance. with these legal agreements, they won’t be able to limit park expansion or heavily tax disney or impose specific construction limits, basically anything they were planning and hoping to do.
and look i don’t care about disney as a company. they’re an awful company who do not care about their employees (literally just raised wages to $18 for their staff this month after a lot of pressure) and even when they seemingly do something good, it’s a calculated business decision designed to reap them more profits. BUT! amusement parks can be the literal foundation of a states economy. dollywood brought its region of tennessee massive growth and job opportunities for its residents, for example. disney world is majorly important to central florida’s economy, and desantis was acting completely out of spite and hatred for gay people when he made the decision to try and damage disney’s economic health via fucking with disney world, because it would damage central florida’s health as well. so it’s nice to see desantis and his hand picked board realizing today that they might be fucked!

Disney asked a federal appellate court to dismiss its lawsuit against Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday, a day after his appointees approved a deal with the company on how Walt Disney World will be developed over the next two decades, ending the last piece of conflict between the two sides. The request came as little surprise because the federal lawsuit’s future was contingent on whether a development agreement could be reached between Disney and the DeSantis appointees to the board of the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District that governs Disney World, according to a settlement reached in March. The development deal was approved Wednesday night by the DeSantis appointees. Disney was facing a deadline next week to a file a brief with the court if it wanted to move ahead with the lawsuit against DeSantis and his appointees. As part of the 15-year deal, Disney agreed to invest $17 billion into Disney World over the next two decades and the district committed to making infrastructure improvement on the theme park resort’s property. The district provides municipal services such as firefighting, planning and mosquito control, among other things, and was controlled by Disney supporters before last year’s takeover by the DeSantis appointees.

Florida lawmakers will meet Monday to complete a state takeover of Walt Disney World’s self-governing district and expand a migrant relocation program, key conservative priorities of Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis ahead of his expected White House run.
Republican leaders of the statehouse, in coordination with DeSantis, have ordered the Legislature to convene in a special session to restructure the Reedy Creek Improvement District, as the Disney government is known.
Lawmakers will also consider a proposal to create a state department focused on migrant relocations, a move that comes after the Governor flew a group of South American migrants from Texas to Massachusetts in protest of federal border policy.
The session continues a focus by DeSantis on social issues including sexual orientation, gender and immigration as the Republican Governor exploits national political fissures on his path to a potential 2024 presidential run.
The meeting is the latest development in a high-profile feud between DeSantis and Disney over the company’s criticism of a law dubbed by critics as “Don’t Say Gay,” which bars instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in kindergarten through third grade and lessons deemed not age appropriate.
The Governor, in going after Disney, displayed a willingness to penalize one of the state’s biggest employers and political donors, reinforcing the combative leadership style that has propelled him to national political stardom and appeals to conservative primary voters.
Lawmakers are expected to create a program to transport immigrants who are in the country illegally to another state if they’ve already been processed by the federal government and if the migrants volunteer.
DeSantis had already used part of a $12 million fund, paid for by taxpayers, to fly about 50 South American migrants from Texas to the Massachusetts resort island of Martha’s Vineyard, bringing widespread condemnation.
Another proposal to be taken up during the session would make it clear the statewide prosecutor has authority to prosecute election fraud in federal and state races.
DeSantis, with statehouse backing, created an election police unit last year to investigate fraud and other crimes to satisfy what has become an important issue to conservative voters following the 2020 election. Some charges resulting from investigations by the election police force have been dropped because of jurisdiction issues.
The squabble between DeSantis and Disney began last year, when the entertainment giant publicly opposed the “Don’t Say Gay” education legislation and said it would pause political donations in the state and support organizations working to oppose the law.
DeSantis and other Republicans moved quickly to criticize the company, calling it a purveyor of “woke” ideologies that are inappropriate for children.
At DeSantis’ request, the GOP-dominated statehouse in April approved legislation to eliminate Disney’s Reedy Creek government by June 2023, beginning a closely watched process that would determine the structure of government that controls the company’s sprawling property.
The creation of the Reedy Creek district was instrumental in Disney’s decision to build near Orlando in the 1960s. Having a separate government allows the company to provide zoning, fire protection, utilities and infrastructure services on its land.
The special session will also adjust language in current laws addressing endorsement deals for college athletes.
Florida was one of the first states to pass a law allowing college athletes to profit off their name, image or likeness, but it doesn’t allow people affiliated with universities to help secure endorsement deals. The proposal would lift that provision to make Florida more competitive with other states that don’t have the restriction.
Lawmakers will also consider a bill to provide more relief money for Hurricane Ian and Nicole recovery efforts.
