THEME: Wizard School
Hello there, I have two recommendation posts that you might be interested in: Magic School Mysteries and Magic School. However, I have a few more games that I can talk about in case you haven’t found the right game for you yet!

Dusk Academy, by Skullery Maids.
Dusk Academy is a spinoff of Blades in the Dark. It uses much of the same systems and mechanics, deviating slightly to fit the setting.
It is set in the hallowed halls of, well, Dusk Academy — a private school on an English island, far away from society. This school caters to girls fresh out of school, unsure of what to do in their futures. Dusk Academy helps these girls sort out their interests and passions, but it is special in its own way. The school is home to magic — and teaches it as part of its curriculum. This fact must remain secret from the rest of the world, but the school aims to provide a healthy environment for students to unleash their mystical potential.
If you are at home with Forged in the Dark games, Dusk Academy should be pretty easy to pick up, as it follows a number of hallmarks of the Forged family, including action ratings, playbooks with special abilities, clocks that represent consequences or projects, and Position and Effect. This game also adds something called Zap, which represents energy or strength that is needed to help your characters cast spells.
Characters in Dusk Academy organize themselves into clubs, so the stories you tell will likely revolve around the kinds of things you expect your club to do. Many of these clubs resonate quite closely with the crews of Blades in the Dark, so I don’t think your school experience is meant to be safe or easy; this school may be prestigious, but it looks like you’re destined to be troublemakers while you’re there.

You're a wizard, and don't let anyone tell you any different. Especially not RJ McElhenny. She's just about the richest author on the planet, all thanks to her series of banal, lowest-common-denominator stories about wizards. Stories that make it pretty clear just what sorts of people she believes deserve to be called "wizards." If you weren't born magical, if you needed to learn how to wield the arcane or if your power stems from a patron or charm… well then you're an almost-wizard, as far as RJ McElhenny and her fans are concerned. 
Let's Rob RJ McElhenny and Steal Her Golden Quill is about taking on a fantasy novelist because you're tired of the shitty takes she keeps unloading on Twitter. It is, notably, a game with no subtext whatsoever and legally you can't prove otherwise. 
Talking about magic schools can put me on edge sometimes because one of the most popular magic schools in media is tied to a lot of real-life bigotry, but that’s certainly not an issue I have with this game. Let’s Rob RJ McElhenny is short and sweet, using a deck of cards to generate obstacles as you move throughout the famous author’s mansion, and dice to help you overcome those obstacles using your elaborate heist-planning skills. This is not really a game about magic school per se, but it is a game about magic users using a lot of familiar references.
Children With Wands, by Joe Kiewra.
Children With Wands is a rules lite, all ages, Table Top Role Playing Game that mostly focuses on having fun adventures where the players solve open ended puzzles and problems. You play as children who have just come into their magic powers and as such don't quite have a grip on their spells yet. This leads to a lot of hijinks where the children often have to fix problems their spells have caused.
Children With Wands is a game currently in beta, so the document isn’t pretty but it’s entirely free. The system is d20-based, with simplified character creation that looks relatively kid-friendly. Much of the dice-rolling relates to the magic that your characters will be attempting to cast - roll too low and you might not get the effect you want, but roll too high and the magic goes out of control. Since your casting is about precision, you’ll use your modifiers to determine an acceptable range of numbers that would grant you success, rather than simply add to your dice roll.
As a document, right now the game is just rules on how to play, no fluff or world description. This means that if you decide to give it a go, you have quite a lot of freedom in determining what kinds of creatures there are and what kinds of problems might be affecting the land around you.
Welcome to Camp Merlin, by KingBim.
Welcome to Camp Merlin - it's time to learn some magic! Cast spells, befriend monsters, save ghosts, earn badges, prank some fairies and summon goblins, all whilst exploring a magical forest full of ancient enchantments and mystical creatures.
Welcome to Camp Merlin is a tabletop role-playing game about non-magical kids attending a summer camp in preparation for their first year at magic school.
While it’s not exactly a magic school, Camp Merlin is definitely adjacent to one, and it’s got a lot of the pieces you might be looking for : spells, monsters, and a regulated schedule for your (likely) child-aged characters. The tone is meant to be whimsical and light-hearted, and good for short sessions. If you want something lighthearted for your friends with a slightly different setting than your typical magical school, you might want to check out Welcome to Camp Merlin.
Arcane Academia, by Oracle Engine.
A GMless tabletop roleplaying game, in which you play a group of students at a magical academy: companions through the tumults and turmoil of a day in the life of wonder and whimsy. Bond over meals together, attend arcane lessons, socialize during your free time, and go on daring, mischievous escapades at night.
Arcane Academia seems like a great game for replicating school-age hijinx and escapades, and all of the trouble you can get in when you’re supposed to be doing your schoolwork. It might also be a good option for tables who don’t have a dedicated GM in the group. If you want to get a little bit of a taste of what the game is like before you buy it, you can also listen to the episode on Party of One where Jeff Stormer plays it with the designer of the game.
Arcana Academy, by Jordan Palmer.
Arcana Academy is a tabletop role-playing game where you get to play as students attending a magical school. Solve mysteries, get into trouble, learn magic, and forge lasting friendships or bitter rivalries.
If you've ever wished you could attend a magical school like Brakebills, this is the game for you. Players will get creative with spells, wander the halls after dark trying to solve mysteries, and explore a world unlike any they've yet encountered. Arcana Academy uses a light tag based system that lets you choose what's important to the story. Along with the spells you've mastered, your character's personality or talents are what drive the action forward. 
Arcana Academy provides a loose framework using the PbtA ruleset, with the expectation that you will want to build a magic school that fits your group’s tastes. Character creation is very descriptive, asking you to write down specific adjectives or phrases that match your character best, rather than choosing an option from a pick list. I think this game is probably better suited for players that already have a very good idea of what kind of school (and students) they want to play, what kind of magic you want to use, and what kind of tone you want to set the story for.

Seriously I love how in this, and in games where synergies come in, it’s not just that they are warlords of Thanos that is most prominent, it’s the fact Corvus and Proxima love each other so much that their battle tactics revolve around supporting and being near each other as much as possible.

I was too tired to paint after work yesterday so back to kitbashing. Another member of what is rapidly becoming a large Inquisitorial warband. I bought this Killteam box almost totally for the Veteran and his glaive and... didn't use it on his body oops.
That rod there... I was supposed to attach an axe head to it.. but now it looks like a light saber and I'm wondering about sharpening that end into a point for it...
Arms are off my GSC Hybrids (as always) though the autogun has been replaced with a revolver from a Hearthkyn. His head is one of the Freeguild Marshall's and needs some green stuff around the back tbh.

Introducing Team ORCT (Orchid)! I did a lineup for my RWBY OCs and their updated designs!! :D I also changed some of their names and details about some of their semblances, so if you're interested I'll include everything below!
Ophelia Rouge (she/her)
An overly confident ram faunus, leader of Team ORCT, and Rica’s girlfriend! Ophelia’s from Mantle, but moved to Vacuo to attend Shade academy. She loves strategizing/planning, as well as a good challenge, so the fact that her own semblance has a limit of uses before affecting herself only adds fuel to her brainstorming, which allows her to patiently observe her opponent while keeping her cards close to the chest before making a move.
Semblance: Contagious Yawn
Her yawns create a bubble that causes a target to fall asleep when popped near them. The amount of time the target sleeps depends on Ophelia’s aura. If her aura breaks while using her semblance, then she risks falling asleep instead!
Weapon: Dust projection worry ring
She has a ring on both hands embedded with ice, fire, rock, and electricity dust that projects a shepherd’s axe made out of whatever dust is being used!
Fairy Tale Inspiration: Little Bo Peep
Rica Venetus (she/her)
An eagle faunus from Mistral who moved to Vacuo to attend Shade Academy. She can give a mean punch and the best hugs, and also Ophelia’s girlfriend! She's a people person and is very observant and sensitive to other people’s feelings - could this be heightened due to her semblance? Either way, if you’re ever struggling, Rica is the best person to help.
Semblance: Shared Sight
Allows her to bond to at most 3 people at a time, no matter how far they may be, to let them see her POV or vice versa!
Weapon: Multi-Use Dual Blades
Dual blades combine to make a double bladed glaive by connecting the bottom of the handles with gravity dust. When in dual blade form, they can also bend resembling a boomerang
Fairy Tale Inspiration: 'The Griffon' fairy tale
There wasn’t really much for me to work with inspiration wise, but the griffin’s main purpose in the story is so the peasant’s youngest son can retrieve a feather from him. With that in mind, I decided to have a sort of feather motif to her faunus attribute and the shape of the blades to her weapon
Clementine Dandy (she/her)
A soft spoken transfem donkey faunus from Vacuo who doesn’t have the best luck with making new friends (mostly because she never knows what to say), but she seems the most outgoing while in combat. She doesn’t get hot easily despite bundling up for her semblance while living in such a hot region - much to her teammates' confusion. Contradictory to her tendency to overthink when confronted with conversation, she’s painfully oblivious whenever thinking about herself.
Semblance: Cloth & Dagger
Manipulation of any article of clothing on her person for offensive/defensive purposes
Weapon: Revolver with dust bullets
Fairy Tale Inspiration: Donkey Skin Girl
Thistle Cheshire (they/them)
A fun-loving cat faunus from Vacuo, Thistle is best known for their dexterity, flexibility & ability to make anyone chuckle. They also have a big crush on Clementine, and of course - even though Ophelia and Rica think it’s obvious - Clem is oblivious.
Semblance: Surprise Party!
Allows them to teleport while giving off the image of a ribbon vanishing, and when they reappear bits of ribbon/confetti pop out with them! Limitations of their semblance include:
More aura is used when teleporting anywhere further than 10 ft. (any distance less than 10 ft. requires very little aura)
Over-reliance of semblance = fatigue and dizziness
Teleporting w/ someone is possible, HOWEVER, the amount of aura utilized is multiplied per extra party member.
Weapon: Dust-Infused Yoyo
Various yoyo tricks utilize fire, electricity, gravity, and hard-light dust to enhance the impact of their attacks/defend themself
Fairy Tale Inspiration: Cheshire Cat
For their semblance, I was inspired by the 1951 Alice in Wonderland film's version of Cheshire Cat when he vanishes while sort of leaving a trail of stripes. So I wanted to do something similar!

As both and empath and a rather paranoid individual at heart, Hriob has always made sure every aspect of his appearance and countenance is carefully maintained in its symbolism and meaning - his choice in weaponry is no exception.
Hriob is competent with a sword and hand-to-hand, especially Savate and Grappling techniques, but his favored/most skilled martial art revolves around the use of Polearms. He was taught by his adoptive mother as a pre-teen and teenager how to fight and survive when it became clear he would never be able to live a life of peace and quiet given his heritage and fate.
While he was first taught on the Halberd, he grew to prefer and eventually forge his own Glaive, a weapon similar to both the oft-simpler Fauchard and its far more improvised cousin, the War-Scythe. The latter was historically made not by practiced warriors in Europe, so much as peasants and farmers who had reason to fight back and, in this instance, rework their harvest scythes into something more combat-oriented. Even if his self-made weapon is indeed purpose-made for combat, reforged from dozens of far smaller spearheads smelted together, the sentiment remains that his is a weapon of a man who will fight for himself and those he cares about, but it in and of itself is not truly a weapon of War.
…if ever that changes, if he truly decides to make a weapon specifically for battlefields, he would probably make a polearm with a far straighter, double-sided blade such as a 'sword-spear' - with the lack of a blunted edge showing that he has decided to forego mercy as an option for the fighting ahead...

Once Upon a Time, in a long-past lifetime, he made such a war-forged weapon for a young warrior named Hector during a conflict that would later be known as the Trojan war... said blade survived its owner and several centuries untarnished, even if it lost most of its pole, eventually being recovered by a wandering knight and restored to legend as the sword Durandal.

catgirl martial arts: a frenetic, acrobatic offensive that's too tiring for anything but lightning-fast clashes; stylists inevitably have to scamper off and have a little nap afterward, or even in the middle of a fight. employs claw strikes, leaping attacks, and luck magic.
foxgirl martial arts: this one's all about feints, misleading footwork, tail movements, and having laid traps all over the battlefield a week before, as part of a tax evasion scheme. unfortunately, foxgirl hubris is more liability than asset in the wuxia genre.
doggirl martial arts: we make a lot of jokes about doggirls here but this one is actually incredibly deadly. spiritual pressure is generated the wagging the tail and then they ram head-first into you right at groin level. extremely painful.
birdgirl martial arts: they fly above you and drop things. no one has a counter so all of the other animalgirls just decided to stop inviting the birdgirls to their tournament arcs. but...how do you keep girls who can fly away?
scarecrowgirl martial arts: with scarecrowgirls, obviously. there's a lot of techniques for yelling at birds that don't have a lot of crossover utility, but the thing where they blow on a dandelion and knock every birdgirl in a flock out of the sky is pretty cool.
snakegirl martial arts: you'd think it would just be 蛇拳, or something about constricting, or like in five deadly venoms, but for some reason snakegirls are all about dual wielding maces. if they've got a long enough tail, they can build up some nasty centripetal force.
sharkgirl martial arts: there's not a whole lot you can do to improve on the basic sharkgirl bite attack deadliness-wise, so this is mostly just about figuring out less awkward techniques for getting up close to people and making jawing motions at them. it's what makes sharkgirls so smooth!
knightgirl martial arts: greatswords, broadswords, short swords, glaives, guisarmes, glaive-guisarmes, and other weapons from back in D&D times. heavy armor techniques have largely been abandoned since cowboygirls first came on the scene; today's knightgirls are strictly chainmail.
megatheriagirl martial arts: spiritual energy is cultivated and conserved over the course of a lifetime of inaction, and unleashed in a single devastating strike. Once they use it, it's going to take a while before they can build up for another one, but the megatheriagirls are twelve feet tall. they'll manage!
squidgirl martial arts: eight arms. two tentacles. ten revolvers. six chambers per revolver. one bullet per chamber. a whole bunch of math and also several ink tricks, like the "calligraphy fist" (leaves a mean note on someone's face).
slimegirl martial arts: i'm not telling you about these unless y'all promise not to be horny about them

Boyfriend Dungeon

I have to say I wish the real world worked like it does in this game, whatever fears and insecurities you have just manifest in a dungeon in your local area and you can just go there and beat the tar out of them to get over it. That'd be great, especially since the monsters strictly stick to the dungeon and never ever leave. Not sure how I'd feel about people turning into weapons though that has all sorts of moral and social questions that I wouldn't want to think on for too long.
Before I start into the review proper I feel I need to make it known that I was one of the backers for this game on Kickstarter.
Y'know its been difficult trying to explain Boyfriend Dungeon to my friends. I mean, it sounds like some kind of BDSM themed hentai game which incidentally I do have one of those to review at some point but that's a while off. What Boyfriend Dungeon actually is is a dating simulator/visual novel combined with a isometric dungeon delver. It should be noted that even though this game is called 'Boyfriend' Dungeon you don't actually have to have a boyfriend, you could have a girlfriend or even a non-binary person... hell there's even the option of a cat eventually if you don't want to have a romantic relationship at all.

When you start the game you get to name and design your player character which includes an option to pick which pronouns you prefer (the default being they/them). Regardless of what pronouns you choose it doesn't place any limitations on who you can date. And if you later decide you want different pronouns, a new look or a new name you can change it all simply within your apartment.
The game is set in the town of Verona Beach (which I assume is the one in New York state). Your player character has come to visit for the summer and luckily has an apartment to live in rent free for the duration thanks to your very kind cousin. In short order your character discovers that apparently some people can turn into weapons and those that chose to make use of them (with consent) are given the title of wielder. Of course, just because the rent is free doesn't mean everything is paid for, you still need to eat after all (not that that's something you have to actually manage in the game). In yet another stroke of luck you can get make money by dungeon delving. It seems that dungeons filled with monsters have been appearing and they drop money when you kill them. They call this past time “dunj-ing”... a term I thoroughly disapprove of.

As you date and flirt with the weapon-people you increase their 'love rank'. Doing this unlocks new skills that each weapon has. Dependant on which weapon you take with you into the dungeon your combat style will change for example; the glaive is slower but more powerful while the daggers are quick but relatively weak on their individual strikes. As the weapons gain more skills and effect your tactics will change.
The monsters of the dungeon are manifestations of your fears and insecurities. In the player characters case they mainly seem to be old rotary telephones, flip phones and CRT televisions. The game will eventually tell you what the fear in question is if you defeat the dungeons final boss. If you happen to run out of health while in a dungeon (which is the only place you can lose health) you fall unconscious and are retrieved by paramedics. There isn't really a downside to this as all items and money found in the dungeon are kept. As you would expect with a dungeon delver as you fight you gain experience and eventually increase in wielder level. Since all the moves come from the weapons this increase doesn't change anything other increase your health pool and attack power.

While on dates (and in certain places within the dungeon) you can give gifts to your potential paramours, each one has their own likes and dislikes that you can work out through conversation and by just paying attention to what they like and don't like (similar to real life). What I found interesting is that unlike most dating sims I've come across its not you doing all the giving, sometimes your love interest will have a gift or two to give you as well.
You can find materials and blueprints in the dungeon to craft gifts and cosmetic items. That's right this game has crafting! Like every other game in existence it seems (sorry I'm just over inserting crafting into every game). It's perfectly functional and I like that quite a few of the cosmetic items you make are references to other games by Kitfox. I'm also slightly bemused by some of the items used in the crafting, I made a pizza using some wire and sugar, I'm pretty sure that's not what pizza is made out of, but what do I know?

Typically visual novels tend to be... verbose. That's not the case in this game, while it's all very well written its clear the developers wanted to keep things succinct and stuck to the most important and impactful parts. I do urge that if you play this game not to simply skip past all of this as there are some very heartfelt scenes and interesting aspects to the characters that are shown in these sections.
It must be mentioned that this games main plot (for it is not all about romancing the weapon-people) revolves around stalking, there are some warnings about this when you start a new game but they are vague and I know that on certain platforms you wouldn't be able to get a refund based on these. Personally I have no issue with the use of that theme but I know that some could find it problematic. I know that the game has been updated since the time of writing to be more specific in its content warnings but I honestly can't remember how the warnings looked previously to compare.

Is it worth your time? That's down to you. However, I had fun with the game enjoying every moment. I also know I'll be returning to it later once the developers release some of the other characters that were slated to be added in.

Sailor Moon Eternal: the Outers
The first half of the second part of Sailor Moon Eternal was about the life the Outers had been living for six months after the death busters got defeated.
It started with Haruka wondering how Usagi would answer if she asked her about her dream.
Then it revolved around Hotaru, growing up at an incredible pace since the day of the total solar eclipse, making Setsuna and Michiru wondered if Saturn would awaken yet again.
During a violin lesson, when it was Hotaru's turn to play the instrument, the ghost of a Pegasus appeared, and then followed by an apparition of Chibi Usa.
Then after dinner, Hotaru played a solar system development game under Haruka's watch.

In her simulation of what happened in the solar system, Hotaru presented the vision that the Earth became shrouded in shadow and the Moon lost it glow after the total solar eclipse.

After Hotaru went to take a bath, the other three Outers discussed the vision shared by Hotaru. Setsuna determined that enemies had infiltrated, and Michiru, frustrated at losing the ability to do what they once could, lost her composure on hearing those words.

Michiru recalled, as Setsuna looked at her with her eyes wide open, what they all sensed on the day of total solar eclipse and pointed out they couldn't transform.

And Haruka, feeling that there was no longer place for them as senshi, sadly added that they were no longer needed, the Inners could carry out the missions on their own.
Hotaru was about to enter the bath when a thunder stroke, causing the light in the bathroom to go out. She then saw in a mirror an apparition of Sailor Saturn, and was told that it was time for a new awakening.

And then, Hotaru awakened once again as Sailor Saturn. She delivered Sailor Crystals to the others after saying that they were all destined to live for a particular person.

Then the Outers said goodbye to the peaceful, dreamlike life, set off and headed to the place where they should go (Haruka), the place where their real dreams existed (Michiru and Setsuna). Even though they were all fully aware of the danger and the possibility of being killed (As shown in season 3).
The Outers got to the Dead Moon Circus, transformed, freed the Inners from the enemies' trap (Uranus and Pluto), and told the Inners that the Prince and Princess were in danger (Neptune).
Uranus and Neptune then fended off a round of attacks by the Amazon Quartet, and Saturn called out to Chibi Usa with her Glaive.

And Chibi Usa saw them in Neptune's Talisman.

Sensing the return of the Outers, Usagi told Chibi Usa to go ahead. So Chibi Usa transformed, requested the Talisman to go to where Neptune was, and headed out.

Neptune had her mirror back.
With that, she showed the Inners the actual state of the world outside the Circus.

And the Outers explained to the Inners what happened.
A triumphant Zirconia emerged before the Senshi, turned Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask into the form of children and left.
Saturn and Chibi Moon chase after the Amazon Quartet. Saturn repeatedly asked the Quartet to wake up, saying that they were being exploited. After she disabled the Quartet's trick that fed her and Chibi Usa with nightmare, Saturn walked to the Quartet, and extended her hand.

The handshake was interrupted by Zirconia, who confined the Quartet in four pieces of marble, and trapped the two Senshi in two shards of glass.
Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask returned to the surface of the Earth after the spell cast against them was nullfied and they were changed back into their original form.
Zirconia appeared again and fed the Senshi with nightmare. After the Senshi were freed from it, Uranus vowed on behalf of the others that

They then launched a counter attack as a group, with Uranus taking the lead. The Senshi chased after Zirconia.
After being rescued by Sailor Moon, Saturn picked up the four pieces of marble.

After the battle was over, Neptune looked into her mirror and told the others that the nightmare was about to end.
After the remaining shadow was removed from the Moon, Saturn stepped forward, knelt, and presented the four pieces of marble, saying that:

And

From the marble four future Senshi emerged.

Saturn assured the four that they would protect the Princess. And so, the future Senshi departed.
What happened after the departure of the four future Senshi served only to wrap up the story and the roles the Outers played ended here.

At the beginning of this second part, the Outers, unable to transform, thought their role as Senshi was over. Yet the reawakening of Saturn, and the Sailor Crystals that were given to Haruka, Michiru and Setsuna enabled them to transform and joined the Inner.
Throughout the second half of this movie, the Outers, guided by Saturn, acted as the bedrocks, boosted the morale of the others, and signaled the end of the nightmare. Saturn, the most significant of the Outers, was shown to possess sharp intuition, and very independent. Without her, the Senshi might lose.
And this would be the last post I write about Sailor Moon Eternal.
Update/Comment: 
I came to see today that there was one thing I didn't take note when I first wrote this: Uranus, despite not being able to transform for an unspecified period, still remained agile:

The only logical explanation would be that Haruka, during the time when she was just an ordinary human, still made the effort to hone her combat skills. This served as a side note on how much importance she attached to her role as Senshi.
It required effort to make sense of what the Inners had on their mind; it required an even bigger effort to look at the clues and deduce what went on in the mind of the Outers. This was the case for Haruka/Uranus, it would be the same for the other three. Yet for now, it is likely that I would only come to see those when I revisit the movie yet again in future.

Dancing in the Sand Pt 1

"Okay, here's another good one." Mizuna started. “I run without feet, have a bed but never sleep, and a mouth but cannot speak. What am I?" 
Era didn’t even skip a beat. “A ghost!”
“Ghosts may not have feet but they don’t run either. Plus they can definitely talk. Try again.” The Raen woman gently guided the chocobos by the reins, making them slightly turn along the path through these dry Thanalan wastes; fortunately it was overcast so the blazing sun wasn’t slow-roasting them in what would otherwise be the equivalent of an oven in this midafternoon heatwave. Era fell silent, for a time, as her eyes darting back and forth along the road. The cogs in her head were spinning so fast she almost had sparks flying out from her ears.
“Uuuhhh…” She rubbed at her temples. “Is it… a… mmmn… Thalen, what do you thi-”
“It’s a river, darlin’.” He finally chimed in, sitting on the other end of the driver’s bench with his dented and weathered flask in his hand. Mizuna turned to give him a disapproving look-- riddles aren’t any fun when the answer is just blurted out. But she saw the look in his eyes while his gaze darted along the outer edges of the crags to their right. Despite trading with Miqo’te for years Mizuna has only recently begun to catch on to their expressions and giveaways; his ears weren’t flat against his head but they were certainly lowered, his brow was furrowed but he wasn’t outright scowling, and his eyes darted along the crags above on the right side of the wagon as if he was searching for something-- or someone. There was no doubt in her mind; Thalen was on edge.
Era on the other hand lit up like a firework once she connected the dots. “Ooooohhh… I like that one!” She clapped excitedly and stifled a giggle, reminding both Thalen and Mizuna that beneath the scars and short temper remained a little girl barely old enough to be considered an adult. “I need to tell Zevs that… but he would probably get it right away. He’s really smart…”
“He’s a forest Miqo’te. The river riddle’s the oldest one in the book as far as we’re concerned.” Thalen grunted in between swigs.
“Are you alright?” Mizuna couldn’t hide her concern any longer. “You seem tense…”
He crossed his arms and slouched in his seat. “Bah, I’m fine Doc. Just a lil’thirsty, is all…”
“Vahli isn’t going to lay a hand on you, Thalen.” Era assured, leaning over the railing to give him a warm smile. “I’ll make sure of that.” All he did was grunt at her in response.
This was the furthest Mizuna had ever been within the Zu Tribe’s territory, and the difference between their lands and the vast majority of Thanalan was night and day. Even from the shady seat on the front of the wagon, she could spot rare and valuable herbs partially hidden in the cracks along the cliffside. Crimson Gloomroot, Tifa's Tears, Faded Glory, and even some Dusklotus shimmered in her peripherals. It's little wonder why so many merchants risk their lives to travel through these untapped lands; perhaps on the way back she could pick some for a nice profit… and for her patients, of course. 
"Alright, we're here." Era sat up once the wagon ground to a halt. The two chocobos clicked their beaks and hummed lowly; they could sense the danger they were in. She took a few sharp breaths and cupped her hands around her mouth before turning to squint at Thalen. With an obnoxious belch he clamped his hands over his ears and began to hum loudly, just as he said he would. "Ku-WIIIIP! Ku-WIIIIP! Ku-WIIIIP!" Her sharp voice carried far across the wastes, echoing off the crags and distant hills. “Okay… let’s go meet them, nice and slowly.”
Mizuna knew she heard sounds differently than the other races, what with the fleshy holes in the sides or top of their heads. Her horns were sensitive to sound vibrations, true, but she still didn't pick up that high of a frequency; Miqo'te whistles were truly something else. "So now that we're waiting…" She started, glancing around for any sign of her tribe. "Is there anything I should know about your people?"
"Mmmn…" Era made her signature half-hum, half-mumble, while tapping ponderously on her chin. "Well, they don't really know what personal space is… the tribewives and kittens in particular. They're very curious, only the warriors have ever seen an Au Ra before, so… expect them to get close and touchy. And I cannot express this enough-- no magick! If they discover you can cast spells, then-!"
"No magick." Mizuna repeated calmly. The nervous chocobo began tugging the wagon along from the gentle flick of their reins, causing Thalen to stiffen and sit up once they turned the corner.
The warriors of the tribe were first to greet them. Women adorned in stained furs and mismatched pieces of plate armor salvaged from their prey all turned to stare in silence once the wagon was in clear view; squatting along the cliff high above was none other than Yhaba, who looked ready to leap into the air and land on the wagon at a moment's notice. She rose to her full height and began walking alongside Era and the outsiders, as several warriors began to trail the wagon from behind.
Next came the huntresses, who were far more relaxed than their battle-sisters, at least. Some wore leather hoods, others were completely bare chested, but all of them were covered in tribal paint to bless them during their hunts. They were perched on the old trees along the path, with most of them too busy inspecting their weapons to notice or care about the wagon. Except for Chaje of course, who nodded with approval at Era when they passed her. Yet the chocobos were terrified-- two giant zu birds stared at them from their nests, salivating at the chance at tasting them.
Last but not least was Vahli Nunh and his harem. He sat along the slope at the mouth of Valhaas Barrow, surrounded by his wives and armed with his mighty glaive. He even wore his battle harness, complete with his iron-clamped bracers, his warpaint complimenting his ritualistic tattoos and scars, and a thick cloak made from the rugged hide of a black Hrothgar.
"Wow…" Mizuna spoke in a low whisper to her two companions. "That is the biggest Miqo’te I've ever seen in my life…!" She and Thalen exchanged weary glances, but Era couldn’t help but smile; it would seem Vahli went all in to make a lasting first impression, an effort she found more endearing and cute than anything else. When the wagon finally stopped, she was the first one to hop down into the dust, and he rose to his feet to greet her.
“These are the outsiders?” He asked, spinning the glaive around in his grasp before resting it on his shoulder. “I do not trust the scaleborn woman with our kittens… and what is this Tia doing here?!”
Thalen took one last swig of his flask before slipping it into his pocket. “I’m the scaleborn’s bodyguard. I owe her a debt and this is my payment.”
Vahli snarled and bristled when he spoke, and it wasn’t long before he moved around Era to stare Thalen down face to face. “You lie! You have come to challenge me and take my wives for yourself!”
“No, he hasn’t!” Era butted in, quickly stepping alongside them before glaives were swinging and bullets were flying. “What he says is true-- he is only here to ensure her safety. When she is done tending to our young, they will both leave. You have to trust me, Vahli.” Mizuna simply watched the three Miqo’te purr, hiss, and whistle at each other; she didn’t speak a lick of Huntspeak but she knew aggression when she saw it. With luck this encounter wouldn’t turn violent, or she would have to give Ms. Slater the bad news.
Both Thalen and Vahli didn’t budge an ilm. The Nunh’s biceps were larger than the Tia’s head, and he was nearly a fulm and a half taller; but Thalen remained as still as stone, his gaze unblinking and his ears flat against the top of his head. If they were destined to fight, it would happen at any moment-- the tension was thick enough to cut with a knife.
“Are you done with your staring contest?” Era’s mother Yuun called out from the entrance of the barrow. “Set aside your pride and bravado and let the lizard woman inside. You two can kill each other after our daughters are cured.” Her tone was sharp and devoid of patience, which was enough for Vahli to blink and angrily grunt before turning around to return to his harem. Era and Mizuna both sighed in relief, as Thalen slowly let go of the firing pin on his revolver, and took his first breath in what felt like a whole bell. It would seem he would have to keep one eye open around this brute, especially after their jobs here were finished.
“Dr. Kusakari.” Era beamed, speaking in Eorzean again. “Right this way!”
