I really enjoy mythology and fairytales, but I don't have any specific stories there. I like to collect books whenever I travel from local bookshops, though, and have friends that bring me back stuff when they travel as well :)

Other than that, I read a lot of romance on my Kindle and I love Ruby Dixon's everything she's ever written. The stories always have fun worldbuilding and a good level of smut you can't really get elsewhere, so I enjoy them!

I've learned that "it reads like fanfic" is a good thing because it usually means that the pacing is something that I will enjoy and the stories themselves are more in-line with what I like to read.

I also read a lot of fanfic SKDJLKS but mostly mlm fic at this point in time. A big fan of Sterek, Reylo, Drarry, and more recently, Wolfstar!

Or a movie that was actually good and had cultural impact (not the Star Wars sequels, only the prequel and og trilogy had impact. Koschei overtook the beautiful Tsar's daughter on her way to the war, seized her from the midst of her army and carried her away across three times nine Tsardoms to his own land.

Can someone write a petition to have JJerrio blacklisted from Hollywood?

It's happened to others for less and the SW/Reylo fandom deserves something to ease the unnecessary trauma inflicted because of abuse of power and passing off horrid fanfic that even the target audience of antis hated.

Space Mom Carrie is rolling in her grave now. George Lucas and the characters he created were abused and mocked so that a reject from the DC fandom could write horror porn. Not to mention the actors who were treated just as horribly. There's no justice to a 40+ year old sacred family fairytale in that.

Canon ended with TLJ. The treatment of DLF's own ship after the release of TROS via complete erasure in addition to 'so sorry we killed your favorite character but here have a comic series where he did nothing wrong and we know it' is pure mockery and hatred toward the creators and actors who put in their hard work.

Beta reader wanted!

I’ve got a new reylo project I’m working on, and hot damn, it’s turning into a doozy.  Because of this, I’m looking to bring on an extra beta reader or two to help me out with it.  If you like my fic The Seventh Bride, you’ll probably enjoy this one.  I’ve got a one-track mind, so a lot of the themes and plot ideas are similar - it’s medieval fantasy and focuses on an arranged marriage between Kylo and Rey (well, sort of), except one of them is lying horribly to the other.  Also, Dragon!Kylo!  However, this one is much lighter on the fairytale themes, and much heavier on the political themes.

In the interest of full disclosure, I’ve thought about turning this into an original work instead of a reylo fic, but I keep running into roadblocks in both variations of the story, so I’m going to start out posting it on AO3 as a reylo fic and might change it later.  If I do decide to go that route, you’re not obligated to stick around and keep editing if you don’t want to.

So when I’m looking for someone who can do standard spelling and grammatical edits, yes, but I’m specifically looking for someone who can help me improve my writing, as well - for example, I know I tend to use a lot of dashes in my writing, so I need someone to tell me if I’m overdoing it, or if I’m using the same word too much.  I’m also looking for someone who’s experienced in writing romantic scenes - not just sex scenes, though I’d like that to be a part of it, but also in setting a romantic tone for the entire series, especially since this romance will be kind of non-traditional.  I’d also like someone who can help me story-build - I’ve got specific sections of the story mapped out, plus a lot of little tidbits, but there are parts of the story where my note is basically [BUILD RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN X AND Y] or [ESTABLISH Z CONCEPT], and a lot of tidbits that don’t really have a home yet.  Basically, I need someone who can help me place those ideas and to help weave the overall story together.

I don’t have a lot of requirements, beyond an ability and willingness to do the above.  I do need you to be 18+, since the later portions of this story will include nsfw scenes, and you do need a gmail, since I share my chapters via google docs.  I’d also like you to have a Discord account, as that’s the easiest way for me to communicate.

Do you listen to What The Force podcast? They have this crazy weird but interesting theory that Palpy wants to marry Rey to control her and obtain power...And I don’t know what to feel about it because it’s such a weird thing to consider that Palpy is gonna be romantic rival lol But it could happen mainly because a lot of stories have this kind of trope...but Palpy?! I have mix feelings bcuz I dont even want Rey to entertain this idea at all. She can be tricked who knows. What are your thoughts?

Yes, I’ve listened to it! I joked on twitter that all I can picture now is this:

But seriously, I can say I’m definitely intrigued, and I don’t think it’s that crazy, though I’m not sold on the /romantic rival/ part. I don’t think it will be literal.

So this theory hinges on the trope of the “dark suitor”: usually some kind of demonic figure or evil magician archetype that tries to lure/force the maiden-heroine into a dark marriage to harness her power—or, in more prosaic stories, her resources. This is quite common in Disney and dark fairytales, particularly those that center on a female protagonist: Beetlejuice (as above), A series of unfortunate events, Legend, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Beauty and the Beast to some extent (Gaston might not be an evil magician, but he’s a dark suitor nonetheless, someone who lusts after the heroine out of a desire to control her)—The Little Mermaid has a gender reversed version of this trope, with Ursula trying to marry Eric (a male proxy, in this case) to permanently steal Ariel’s magical voice and keep her as a slave. As the podcast put it, it’s not about a love triangle per se, but about controlling feminine power, often in a sexualized way. I think it’s important to note that the dark suitor trope differs from the more general “villainous crush” because the villain in question doesn’t have a genuine crush or feelings for the heroine, but tries to seduce her for his own personal gain, or because he’s simply evil personified, an inherently dark force that only exists to corrupt and enslave. In contrast, the real love interest is the one who lets the heroine go, learning to respect her freedom and giving up any attempt to control her (see: the Beast leaving Belle free).

Now, this is pure speculation based on an analysis of tropes and archetypes, but this time not based on canon material, merely on predictions of how those tropes could evolve, so I recommend taking it with a grain of salt. Our theories about the force bond or Reylo being reminiscent of Hades/Persephone, Beauty and the Beast, Bastila and Revan etc. were so strong because they had a lot of canon evidence or foreshadowing to rely on. (think of how many hints of the force bond were in the tfa novelization, or how much the cinematography screams “Hades” and “Grim Reaper” when Kylo comes on screen). Otoh, we have nothing in canon to predict what Palpatine’s role will be in relation to Rey, other than a brief glimpse of Dark!Rey from the sizzle reel and, well, Palpatine’s own track record with seducing people. We haven’t even seen a glimpse of Palpatine himself in this trilogy so far.

We have, of course, our understanding of the trilogy’s main themes and what they’re trying to accomplish as the final word on an entire saga. Namely, redemption, healing the wounded masculine through the feminine, and incorporating the former into the latter and vice versa, in a “divine” reconciliation of opposites (a wound opened by Anakin’s choking Padme and falling to the dark side via Palpatine’s orchestrations).

One thing that imo the Reylo fandom got completely right is that the Feminine—Rey’s femininity—is really crucial to this trilogy. Rey being a heroine defines and changes everything, from the nature of her heroic journey to her dynamic with the villain(s). So I think it’s definitely plausible—almost certain—that Palpatine will identify in her the ultimate bride apprentice to seduce, exploit & maybe subdue, PRECISELY bc she’s a woman (“Padmé reborn with the Force”) and NOT a Skywalker (a bloodline Palpatine has now a BAAAAD track record with). Whilst Snoke, who tried so hard and failed to be Palpatine like Kylo tries and fails to be Vader, targeted Kylo and ignored Rey, Palpatine will do the exact opposite, and try to get rid of Kylo (or maybe use him as a bait / cannon fodder / sacrificial lamb) to get to Rey. Because he knows where the real power resides. In essence, he’ll throw Ben/Padmé under the bus to secure Rey/Anakin’s powers.

(but exactly like Snoke before him, he will underestimate both Ben Solo and Rey, and his hubris will be his downfall)

My main issue with this is that I don’t think Rey’s weakness is her need for romantic love, so I find it unlikely that she’ll be tempted by a second romantic suitor. She longs for a belonging, for connection, yes. But Kylo offered her exactly that in the form of a romantic proposal, and she was able to turn him down. So why should she fall for Palpatine’s seduction, instead? Even if he manifests himself in the form of sexy Matt Smith? What does he have to offer, that Kylo does not? How can he seduce Rey when even Kylo, the man Rey falls in love with in TLJ, could not?

well,

unlike Kylo, Palps is incredibly good at manipulation. Kylo’s proposal was naked, blunt. Join me and together we will rule the galaxy. He said she was nothing but not to him, but that’s kindergarten manipulation compared to Palpatine’s skills (it’s not manipulation at all, actually, but that’s another issue). He didn’t try to blackmail her, bargain her surrender in exchange for her friends’ lives, offer to reunite her with her parents, offer her to resuscitate her parents, NOTHING. Hell, he actually tried to heal Rey’s conflict over her parents, forcing her to confront her suppression of her abandonment, accept it and MOVE ON. We been saying that a real Sith, on the other hand, would let the wound fester, and fester, and fester, and then strike, because an apprentice with a huge achilles’ heel is much easier to manipulate into the dark side. 

this “dark marriage proposal” might not be literal, but symbolical. The sexual symbolism of such a union might be hidden, disguised as something else—something Rey needs desperately, or thinks so. A father figure. Something Kylo repeatedly called her out on. 

Related to point 2: what if Kylo’s proposal failed because he explicitly presented himself as her equal (and potential mate, scaring the shit out of her, because she’s in the adolescence phase in TLJ and she’s confused by her sexuality, and still clinging to the childhood version of herself, see her *regression* in the last act of the movie), rather than as her… daddy? If not as her literal father, as an older, wiser, trustworthy, authoritative male figure that plays into Rey’s need for guidance and belonging. We thought she was over it by the end of TLJ, but what if she hasn’t fully processed it yet? 

Now enter Palpatine, the ultimate demonic figure in this entire story, with unparalleled skills in disguise and manipulation and vast experience in mentoring young, troubled apprentices with abandonment issues, either presenting himself as a seductive young(ish) man claiming to be able to bring Rey’s parents back / tell her the REAL truth about them, or literally pretending to be her father. Enter an Elektra complex, that would be a great counterpoint to the vastly documented oedipal subtext in Anakin and Ben’s narratives. Make it REALLY ambiguous as fuck. And here’s your “weird” story.

The nice thing about this theory is that it’s a subversion of the villain x heroine narrative we’ve been watching so far (and reviled for liking by the rest of the fandom). We thought Kylo was the Murderous Snake, the evil seductor, the dark suitor. And he was, but only because he’s Rey’s Shadow. In truth, he’s an angel in demon clothes. Underneath the monster, there’s the real Heroic Love Interest. He’s the darkness that Rey needs to incorporate and reconcile with; Palpatine is the darkness she needs to reject.

Another thing—whether or not this theory comes to fruition, I’m fairly certain there will be a moment where Palpatine, seemingly in control of Rey, urges her to kill Ben (remember that “kill him!” in the TFA novelization?). Because that’s what Palpatine does—he’s the Devil whispering in the Lovers’ ears, turning them against one another. But because this is reverse anidala, Rey will succeed where Anakin succumbed, and categorically reject to hurt her lover. The Lovers will be stronger than the Evil Magician this time.

REYLO FIC RECS PART V

In the year of our lords, Adam Driver and Rian Johnson, I am coming out with probably my longest and most comprehensive reylo fanfic rec list to date (about a hundred more under the break ;). Each fic has been read by yours truly, sorted into three parts as per usual under au's, in- universe, and completed. Each will be accompanied by the title, author(s), chapter count, and a short synopsis and notes. I’ve got a Star Wars books list going and if you’re looking for canon Star Wars books with a Reylo vibe, then definitely pick up Lost Stars by Claudia Gray. The two main heros are on opposite sides of the galactic civil war and it’s romantic af. One of my favorite canon novels, for sure (YA Romance).

Generally speaking, my tastes run towards paranormal romance/fairytales, but if you’re into Russian folklore, definitely consider the Winternight Trilogy by Katherine Arden (starts with the Bear and the Nightingale). I’ve only read the first one, but it was wonderful (adult historical fiction/fantasy). A young woman with special abilities captures the attention of an ancient frost demon, among others, and it’s beautifully written.

If you’re looking for something a little more smutty, then Sarah J. Mass’ A Court of Thorns and Roses series is great, especially book two (I kind of had to slog through the first book a little, but it picks up and the second is GREAT). There’s a really great enemies to lovers type/soulmates story here, plus some secondary characters/relationships that I really enjoyed (I’d call this New Adult fiction). Additionally, her YA series Throne of Glass is also pretty fun and eventually has an enemiesish to lovers romance, and then another one with a grumpy tol and a sassy smol and I JUST LOVE this couple to death.

If you are looking for something SUPER FUCKING SMUTTY, Kresley Cole’s Immortals After Dark series (is massive) and has some really great enemies to lovers entries, though I’m specifically thinking of Lothaire (it’s pretty dark, so make sure to read a summary to make sure it’d be an enjoyable experience for you). Enemies to lovers in every sense of the word.

I also loved Holly Black’s Folk of the Air series, starting with The Cruel Prince. Also GREAT enemies to lovers, slowburn. Love love love love. Everyone’s an asshole and I love them all.

Also really enjoyed the Wrath and the Dawn by Renée Ahdieh (it’s amazing, though I wish the second book was stronger), which is a retelling of Scheherazade which is my JAM.

I’ve also had Naomi Novik’s Spinning Silver recommended to me, though I haven’t read it yet. I’ve also got Illona Andrews that everyone has recommended to me, but I haven’t been in a reading mood lately, so I haven’t gotten to it. I’ve also had Land of the Beautiful Dead on my kindle since forever (also thematically really dark, so be careful before you read it), but it’s SUPER FUCKING LONG and I just haven’t been in a reading mood lately.

"Kylo is irredeemable"

Look, everyone. I need EVERYONE to listen real closely. Do I have your attention? Good.

Star Wars is a children’s movie. It is a series of children’s films about love, hope, family, and redemption. 

It delves into dark themes, absolutely, but it does so at a level that children can understand. That’s why, for many of us who grew up with Star Wars, Vader’s redemption makes perfect sense. We saw it as a kid and understood that (in a perfect world), parents would do anything for their children. He saved his son and was redeemed. 

We have way more foreshadowing of Kylo’s redemption than we ever did of Vader’s. We know that love will save Kylo because we’ve already fucking been told that it will. First, by Vader’s death. Then,by Rose. 

The “good guys” win. Per usual, the good guys are the people who the story is focused on. There’s a reason we don’t get much of a true villain’s backstory in children’s films. As soon as there is back story, there is an emotional connection to the character and we don’t like children to have emotional connections to irredeemable villains who are going to die. 

Look at Star Wars through a child’s eyes and it’s blatantly obvious that Kylo will be redeemed. 

If you don’t think he will, you’re wayyyyy overthinking and overcomplicating the story. When it comes down to it, remember that Star Wars is a fairytale meant for children.

a critical reflection on the failings of star wars: the rise of skywalker

(introduction: my viewpoint)

i've decided to write a small series of critical reflections on how The Rise of Skywalker failed to achieve its full potential (or even half of its potential)

i've only seen TROS once at this point in time, so it's possible my opinion will change with future viewings, but it's important for me to get my thoughts out now even if they change later

because this is a critical piece, there will be very little positivity, and so although i have been deeply affected by Kylo and Rey both as characters and as a pairing ever since The Force Awakens, i will not be tagging most of these posts with the #reylo tag and will instead be using a #reylo criticism tag

this is how i've chosen to cope with my own visceral disappointment, and how i wish to move forward

for now, i simply want to lay the foundations of my own viewpoint in the hope that it helps to explain why i cannot accept the film we received, even if others can find some solace in it via various interpretations or head canons

my favorite film of the sequel trilogy is actually The Force Awakens, which i think is unusual in the reylo side of the fandom (most seem to be Rian Johnson fans and to prefer The Last Jedi, but while i appreciate many of the things Johnson brought to the table with that film, i have far more criticisms of it than i do The Force Awakens)

i am a Star Trek fan, not a Star Wars fan, and so i was not expecting to be sucked into the sequel trilogy the way i was--what JJ Abrams set up in The Force Awakens between his heroine and her villain was compelling to me in a way no film within the past twenty years has been compelling, and he certainly got my attention

to see JJ Abrams return and destroy what he himself built in The Force Awakens broke my heart far more than the petty rivalry between him and Johnson even wth each of them trying to spit on what the other had established (i completely understand directorial ego was at stake and that's hard to overcome even for professionals); but for Abrams to destroy even his own fairytale that he himself nurtured is unbelievably tragic and i think truly a fatal blow for Star Wars as a brand

this is probably why although i know i should be railing at Abrams, i can't find the heart to be angry because i feel he sacrificed his own integrity as a creator for reasons i can't begin to fathom, perhaps economical, perhaps out of personal insult

this being said, although i fully accept that the ultimate failing of the narrative lies with Abrams and the writing team (and some with Rian Johnson and the position he placed Abrams in after TLJ), in the following posts i will be addressing the characters themselves, in particular Rey, which may come across as offensive to those who love them; i only ask that you please remember that i love these characters as well, and the hard edge of my criticism comes from wanting more both from them and for them
