Black Tailed Red

In order to make this post I had to do a fair bit of research to form my own opinion on the black tailed red genotype. And you may form your own.

I raised Buckeyes for years so I have a decent number of examples of this. Note: there is some disagreement as to whether black tailed red is created using Columbian Co or Ginger and likely there are examples of both. But as to the most common (American) red breeds I do believe that it is Columbian present. I am tested to cross a Buckeye with a gold birchen bird to test for the presence of either dark brown or Columbian. However, even that wouldn't settle the debate as to whether Rhode Island Reds (and New Hampshires which were derived from RIRs) are the same. Largefowl Buckeyes and Rhode Island Reds were created analogously at the same time. Since the internet didn't exist back in the early 1900s, Nettie Metcalf (creator of the Buckeye breed) thought she was creating the only red chickens that existed, only to discover that Rhode Island Reds were also being created by breeders on the East Coast! Both breeds have Buff Cochin ancestry. Bantam Buckeyes were created from bantam Rhode Island Reds.

An argument for Db is that black tailed red doesn't have black striping in the males like in Co birds. However, wheaten doesn't typically have neck striping in the males anyway, and seems more likely to me that wheaten based columbians like Light Sussex are an exception with a hackle striping gene rather than the rule.

I will start with the New Hampshires since they are a more "unaltered" color. The genotype I would propose is e^Wh/e^WhCo/Co/Mh/Mh, giving a rich orange color with no hackle striping on the male but some black v-shapes on the hackle feathers of the females.

Rhode Island Reds and Buckeyes, in my theory, are e^Wh/e^WhCo/Co/Mh/Mh but with other darkening genes that turn their ground color a deep, rich mahogany red color. The proposed symbol for unknown darkening genes is 'rb' meaning "recessive black" but I don't like it because it isn't adding any melanin at all, just intensifying the pheomelanin. That said, in the few areas there is black on these birds, it is intense, creating and interesting contrast between deep, shiny purplish red and black with an intense green sheen.

Here is a Rhode Island Red, with a red so dark it is nearly black.

Rhode Island reds are red through and through, with some black hackle markings and tail markings. This is typical for a wheaten based columbian. Buckeyes, however, are somewhat unique.

They are not supposed to have hackle markings (though many do) yet they have slate undercolor in their back. (It is red elsewhere.) They may or may not have black in the wings and tail. They all do to some degree but some have very little.

The genetic cause for this difference is unknown.

Can we talk about that as bumbling and comedic as Rocky’s role was in the sequel, he was consistently just putting himself in harm’s way and dangerous situations without thought because absolutely nothing was keeping him from his girls?? Always going forth with this steely look on his face?? It’s such a development from the self-serving and “HIDE ME!!” we saw from him at the beginning of the first movie.

(I also like…really appreciate that this is also so consistent to his backstory; the guy was routinely shot out of a cannon so yeeting himself across great distances comes naturally.)

Babies are here! The post office called us about 715 this morning! They told us to come to the back door, the delivery truck hadn't even left yet when I got there.

Heart, Mind, and Soul's respective colors make like no sense

The only one that makes a little sense is Mind's, because I guess machinery could be associated with the color blue, and blue is generally associated with coldness and harshness like Mind.

BUT HEART AND SOUL

The reasoning behind Soul being red might be it being Whole's favorite color, which makes sense because Soul stands for everything he likes and such (excuse me, Chonny Jash megafans for not knowing his favorite color.) But if it isn't, there are so many more reasons why it would make more sense for Heart to be red and Soul to be purple.

THIS IS NOT A CRITICISM OF CHONNY JASH IF HE JUST ASSOCIATES HIS HEART WITH PURPLE AND SOUL WITH RED IT'S COOL I'M JUST HUMBLING THE IDEA

First off, red and blue mix to make purple. Soul is a mix of Heart and Mind, giving him the half and half cookie design we all know and love, so it would make sense that his color would be a mix of Heart and Mind's colors, too.

Secondly, hearts are associated with the color red. If you think of it literally, your heart pumps red blood. If you think of it metaphorically, hearts represent love, which is generally associated with the color red. You could even go as far as to say that red is the color of anger, which is something that Heart has for Mind.

ALTERNATIVELY Soul could be associated with red because of passion, and Soul represents Whole's passions. But I have no idea as to why Heart might be purple, y’all can put your theories in the reblogs.

wildcard time! red/crownslayer

I had to really think about this one because at first glance I would have put them at 10/10, but as I rolled the idea around in my head I realized that what they have is much more about the intensity of what they are doing more than it’s about how kinky it is

Like it’s pretty obviously predator/prey vibes, play into the inherent fear Red can provoke to really get adrenaline and endorphins flowing. They finish up a mission and head back, Crownslayer feels the hair rise on the back of her neck because Red wasn’t satisfied with their job, hadn’t had her fill.

So Red hunts her.

Through badlands, through dense forests, through the dark bowels of Rhodes no one goes to, Crownslayer is hunted.

And when Red had had enough, nipping at Crownslayer through her own fog, tiring her out and weakening her. Red goes in for the kill and eats her fill while Crownslayer gives in knowing she gave it her all.

Sometimes Red is muzzled or blindfolded etc to even the playing field, but it almost always ends the same way.
