dear darling over here will show his love to you through the little things, like simply asking if you're okay or if you need a hug. usually most of the time when he asks if you want any sort of affection, it's his silent way of saying that he wants your affection as he's just too shy at times to voice his love to you. but at times he will get enough courage to say that he loves you, but with him it's like sharing a secret in the dark night, where it's simply just the two of you and sappy feelings that make his heart jump in excitement. sometimes he'll even crack a joke if he feels up to it, sweet boy thrives off of seeing that people feel better because of him. he wants to see just how much he can do to help others, even in the expense of his own happiness, so as long as you're with him and happy, he wouldn't need anything else in the world. atsushi is hurt, causing him to be needy and clingy, he'll stick around you for a while but then suddenly distance himself, not wanting to be a nuisance. it's an annoying process, but it's a way that shows that he cares and loves, even if it's manipulative in a way. he'd do anything for you to the point of leaving you if it made you happier. so if you show your love to him in a faint way, a faint touch or simply just a smile, it's going to remind him that he's doing the right thing, and that he's doing good. atsushi is simple but sweet, a true romantic at heart, some flaws too, poor boy is trying his best. but, atsushi would do anything for you, you're truly the only thing that matters to him

dazai osamu.

dazai is a very narcissistic person, manipulating others for his own gain, it's in his port mafia black blood. but he's been trying to better himself, ever since he was given the chance to abandon the port mafia for a better life. the love he tries to show you is like being vulnerable with someone who won't criticize you for it, it feels good, maybe even a little forbidden at some times, but you enjoy it. dazai will whisper sweet nothings in your ear as you pass each other during work, he'll annoy you as you work, but it's his way of showing love, very tough love. there will be scarce touches throughout the day, sometimes even risque ones, another way of his love. but there will be times where in the comfort of your home will his heart be shown barren to you, blood, guts and all the other crap he has piled on him. he'll wear less layers as your relationship progresses, leaving him in his striped blouse and khakis and less bandages. it might not seem like much, but it's like walking around naked, you'd have to be comfortable to do that, it's a silent way for dazai to show that he trusts you. his way of love is truly silent, it might seem like he would scream out to the world that he loves you, but he also loves you enough to say it to the person who matters, the person who gave a faint reason to live in his dull life.

edogawa ranpo.

ranpo is obviously very clingy and high maintenance from first impressions, believing that just because he's smarter than everyone else he then deserves special treatment. he's very narcissistic in his own way as well, but it's mainly unintentional, he lacks the normal amount of care and love he should have been given. that then causes his over clinginess and over exaggerated personality, he lacks attention and he found that being like that then gave him the attention he looked for. he's not above becoming better either, it's how he's grown up and still has that child like mentality, but there are times when he's truly vulnerable and acts like his age. when he puts on his childish front, he'll cling to you as if you're the thing keeping him tethered to the world, maybe even share a snack if he deems that you're deserving of it. he'll drag you away from your work, so days like these are never productive, even when you whine and beg for him to let you go he won't listen at all, throw some praise in the mix and he might think about it, only if you promise to praise him more. but then during the times of solitude when it's just the two of you alone, no longer in the agency for the day, he becomes silent, quietly doing things and staring blankly at walls or even his snacks. the atmosphere of being around others fuels him, causing his loud and childish nature, but the moment he's alone he then acts his age. he'll actually be more bold as well, telling you softly to not go when you're about to go grab something from the kitchen. it's almost like he's in a state of depression, but it's just how he truly is, silent and soft. it's like watching the sunset with the person you love most, it's a soft moment, sometimes even useless to some, but in the end it's a sense of vulnerability where you share secrets without any words. his true love is like that, quietly looking out for you, using his insight to subtly help you. love is a very foreign topic for him, he used to view it as useless and unnecessary, but with you he's slowly warming up to the idea of loving someone.

So I know we here at Startrekfandom love that "came back wrong but from the pov of the wrong" thing and apply it to many different characters and canon situations and I am far from trying to complain about it (I'm "came out wrong" trope myself so I was always gonna obsess over it) but having recently watched a very important episode (you'll know which one) for the first time I think there's a character who hits both tropes mentioned but llike, intertwined, opposite and subverted, and whom I wanna talk about.

Julian Bashir.

From his parents' pov he's "came out wrong but we got him help and he came back better" while from his own pov it's "came out 'insufficient', was destroyed for it, came back wrong and only later slowly came to terms with his new self tho never the process (justifiably so)" and it's heartbreaking because in a way, he's right! Jules Bashir died! His parents had an intellectually disabled child and decided to eugenics him! Julian is not the person he used to be and while I do love the person he is now, that doesn't bring back who he was! Part of me wishes we could've gotten to see Jules at least once and part of me hopes we never do because my heart would shatter.

This isn't a good comparison but nonetheless one I can't help drawing: it's giving similar vibes to anti-vaxxers. "I'd rather risk having a child who is dead than one who's autistic". Obviously this doesn't map over since Julian is still autistic and the procedure his parents subjected him to specifically targeted his intellectual disability and if any folks with id wanna comment on this I definitely recommend you listen to them over me, but it's a similarity I, as an autistic who has encountered anti-vaxxers again and again, can't help but point out. "Give me a normal child or give them death."

This may have been written about already but there needs to be stories about teenage Julian (after finding out and rediscovering who he was) practicing some good ol' recognition of the self through media. I need to hear about how he would encounter a story about someone who came back wrong (I'm gonna assume there's plenty of "wrong" pov stories floating around by the 24th century) and absolutely weep. I need to see Julian mourning Jules, taking years and years to process his feelings, experiencing guilt about how he, the imposter, didn't deserve to live Jules' life.

Came back wrong from the returned's pov but it wasn't an accident. It was done to you deliberately by the people who claim to love you. And now you are here, piloting the corpse of your predecessor.

luca kaneshiro, who will never leave your side once he finds out. he just wants to guarantee your safety, and there’s nothing to be ashamed of when discussing this with him. he’ll cuddle you to sleep every night, his strong grip on you (but gentle around your healing wounds) signaling his undying love for you. he wants to help you in any way he can, and sometimes he just wants to cuddle you to remind you just how much he loves you. he does, and he would never lie about that. he’ll often try to distract you, take you out on dates if you’re up for it. he just wants to see you smile, even if just for a few seconds. he understands that sometimes you can’t help it when you hurt yourself, and he won’t tell anyone until you’re ready to tell a professional.

vox akuma, who will always clean and bandage your self inflicted wounds. no matter how big or small they may be, how shallow or deep, he will never hesitate to clean and bandage them so they heal. he’s been around for hundreds of years, so this isn’t something that he’s never seen before. he loves you regardless and eventually wants to get you the help you deserve because you deserve to be okay and happy. but if he can’t do that now, at the very least let him show how much he loves you in the way he tenderly and gently will sanitize and bandage you up where needed as he gently whispers affirmations to you that he won’t leave, he still loves you so, SO much.

ike eveland, who noticed right away without you telling him. he’s a very observant person, so he notices immediately when something is off. he understands that getting the help you deserve is difficult and scary, so he will never, EVER push you to do it when you’re not ready. and when you are, he will stay with you every single step of the way, never letting go of your hand or straying too far from you. he knows he’s probably being overprotective, but seeing his beloved in such a broken state hurts his heart. yet, he’ll never lose his patience with you, nor will his love ever falter. this doesn’t change how much he loves you and it never would, he’s just worried. he won’t push you to do things you’re not ready for, so if for now all he can do is change your bandages, re-sanitize your wounds, and snuggle you to sleep every time you want to rest, that’s fine by him.

mysta rias, who would never, EVER get mad. when he finds out, the only emotion he feels is concern. why would he ever get mad when his beloved partner is clearly struggling? this isn’t about him anyway, it’s about you and how he just wants you to be okay and happy. much like the others, he would stay by your side as if it would kill him to let to go of your hand or take his arm off your shoulder. he’ll gladly go with you when you decide to get help, and he’ll recommend it to you but won’t go past that. he knows better than most that getting help for these things can be downright terrifying, and he would never intentionally subject you to that. for now, he’ll just stay by your side and reassure you through his acts of affection that this doesn’t make him think any different of you.

shu yamino, who will take care of you. anything you want, he’ll get for you without hesitation. he will barely allow you to leave your bed, bringing you food and drinks and plushies, cleaning and bandaging your wounds every 8 hours or so, anything you want will be done. this is how he shows his care and concern, by pampering you and showering you in love and affection that you deserve to always have. at night, he’ll wrap you in a warm blanket and lay with his muscular arms around you, a silent reassurance that he wouldn’t go anywhere. he would never leave you over something like this, his love was undying and eternal. as long as he gets to help even a little bit with your recovery process, he’ll be happy.

You knew that at some point there will not be any mysteries left for the detective to solve. You knew that at some point he will have to leave to another city, this was the way things went.

But you didn't expect it to be that soon, two years could be seen as a lot but it flew so fast, two years felt like a few months, the day he sat down and told you, that he was going to leave in a month you felt so shocked and sad.

After so much time spend together he was leaving ? But you knew you couldn't force him to stay, after all you wanted to best for him, and you knew the best for him wasn't to stay in this city, you knew that it been a while that Mysta though of leaving this city.

And what could you do other than support him ? Even if it made you sad you knew what the best decision you could made was to accept him leaving, accept him leaving this city, accept him moving on, accept him changing.

After the month passed, you were looking at the detective making his bag, today's was the day he was leaving, and the day you were saying your goodbye. You smiled at Mysta, he was talking to you like normal while packing up. He acted as if everything was normal.

You accompanied him to the door, the detective smiled at you and simply said 'goodbye' and walked off, you watched him until he disappeared from your field of view.

You let out a small sigh, grabbed your own suitcase and ran after Mysta.
