Angelosaurus dolani was an early synapsid, part of the caseid family and closely related to the more well-known Cotylorhynchus.
Living in what is now Texas, USA during the mid-Permian, about 270 million years ago, it's only known from partial skeletal remains but was probably around 3m long (~10').
Like other large herbivorous caseids it would have had a tiny head with proportionally big nostrils, a short neck, a large barrel-shaped body accommodating a voluminous gut, a long tail, and strong sprawling limbs. But compared to its relatives Angelosaurus was particularly bulky, with shorter thicker heavily-muscled limbs and stubbier digits ending in broad hoof-like claws.
In closely related caseids the presence of teeth on the roof of the mouth and a well-developed hyoid apparatus suggests these animals had big tough tongues, which may have been used to mash mouthfuls of plant matter against the palatal teeth to partially break it up before swallowing.
Based on skin impressions from other early synapsids, Angelosaurus probably had crocodilian-like scutes on some parts of its body – likely on its underside and tail, and maybe also on the top of the head as indicated by the pitted bone texture of caseid skulls – but whether the rest of its skin was scaly or naked and glandular is currently unknown.
In recent years there have also been some proposals that large caseids may have had a semiaquatic hippo-like ecology, but this idea is controversial.

Characters
Hey folks, I had an idea. So I'm writing a fic called Once More, With Feeling, and I am about ready to put another chapter out, but at the same time I have also finished the character sheet of every character in my fic who goes to school at the same time as Harry (whew.)
So my idea was that I would release said character sheet and people could do asks pairing a character with a subject they liked (for example, Keiko Tanaka with older lesbian awakening) and I write them a chapter if I could, because 1. motivation and 2. it would be fun!
One note: please don't use any original characters without asking. I know there's still a chance that it will happen and maybe it's not fair to ask, and if so lmk, but if at all possible, if you are reading this, inherent creative copyright is the basis of all fanfiction and if we can't agree on that, so much of what we love wouldn't exist. If you ask I'm 100% amenable to the characters being used, but please ask.
Okay, without further ado, here is the list as of right now, with Harry as a first year. When I get to the next year I'll reblog with the new kids and without the seventh years. The * refers to an original character, and the (a) refers to a character that has already been introduced in the story, which doesn't mean they can't get a chapter written but means they may already have a bit of a personality.

Jane Eyre- Lowood School
Characters
Lowood School
The Guard- that drives her from Gateshead Hall to Lowood.
Maria Temple- Superintendent of the Lowood Institution- a charity school. Around 29 years old.
Miss Miller- perhaps 25 years old.
Other girl students- about 80 in all.
Miss Smith- teaches the girls to sew
Miss Scatcherd- teaches history and grammar, touchy and quick to be offended
Madame Pierrot- French teacher from Lisle, France
Helen Burns- Jane's friend at the school. She is mercilessly picked on by Miss Scatcherd, but is calm inside and out in response. Helen is humble and acts as a counter to Jane's rebellious attitude to injustice. Helen sees her own faults and accepts the rebukes as perfectly reasonable efforts to correct what is wrong.
Barbara- a servant at the school
Mrs Harden- the housekeeper at the school who is as stingy as Mr Brocklehurst.
Mary Ann Wilson- a close confidante of Jane's at school.
Mr Bates- the doctor that pronounces Helen is not long for this world.
Rev. Mr Nasmyth- marries Miss Temple
Miss Gryce- another servant at the school.
Robert Leaven- coachman who married Bessie from Gateshead.
Bobby- Bessie and Robert's son.
Mr Eyre- Jane's father's brother came to the Reed's house looking for Jane but was told she wasn't there. He looked to be a gentleman.
Jane's Struggle during this period
Jane sees injustice particularly in the treatment of Helen Burns. But where she wants to fight fire with fire, Helen teaches her to accept things she can't change. And accept the discipline as instruments to change character defects, and to learn Christian humility even in difficulty, because the thing that overcomes hate isn't violence, but love. Vengeance only breeds more hatred and violence.
Helen notes that Jane has become consumed with remembering every injustice of Miss Scatherd, but suggests Jane would be much happier if she wouldn't nurse animosity or register wrongs.
Brocklehurst, the patron of the school, explains his modus operandi to Miss Temple, the mission is to 'mortify in these girls the lusts of the flesh'. But his own family is richly arrayed in the kind of finery he wants the girls at the school to learn to do without. Ostensibly, this is for spiritual reasons, but clearly, if that were the case, he would be worried about his wife and daughters' spiritual conditions as well.
Jane is subjected to public humiliation by Brocklehurst, when he repeats unjustly the condemnations he merely heard from Mrs Reed. But it turns out that Brocklehurst is seen by the teachers and girls at the school for the hypocrite that he is, and his condemnation has no real effect on Jane.
Helen tells her that even if everyone did hate her, if her own conscience was clean, she would have friends. Jane replies that she couldn't stand being alone like that. Helen tells her that she worries too much about what people think, better instead to worry about what the Lord thinks.
Jane sees a beauty in Miss Temple that comes from the soul, not the physical appearance. Jane is cleared of all the charges Brocklehurst had laid on her, and she begins to grow in knowledge and acceptance at the school. She decides she would rather be there with love than in Gateshead where she was hated.
The particular struggle Jane faces at the first stage of the Lowood school is dealing with her own reaction to injustice. Helen helps her to see there is a better way to deal with injustice than rebellion, and Jane learns that others can see the same things she does, so she isn't alone in her suffering.
After the Typhus epidemic, it was revealed that the unhealthy conditions foisted on the girls by Brocklehurst's stinginess contributed to the devastation, and beneficial changes were made. Jane passes the rest of the time until 18 and becomes a teacher at the school for the last years.

What are some of your headcanons for HP? Like Houses for all students in Harry's year.
That’s a very interesting question, anon. I’ve always spoken about this a few people – especially a project with Harry’s year. That being said....
I have several headcanons. Harry’s year is a current favorite. I have disregarded the idea of ten per House, five girls and five boys. I have expanded it into twelve, six of each. Since there aren’t enough canon characters, I have created a few OCs.
Send an ASK if there are any questions or comments on a specific character.

In pieno stile masochista. ». Anzi. In ogni caso – ciao signor Rainecourt! Vorrei vedermi come mi vedi tu. Prima o poi ». « Buon continuo serata e dita sempre incrociate, mi raccomando! »

here at noyade, you will see that we host a large, fairly open canon list. we want to give you all as much inspo as you need, but also leave it open-ended for your own creativity. there are a few easter eggs in this document, however, regarding canon deaths and allegiances that have been predetermined in order to align with the overall site plot. also, while we do want to leave things open, we highly recommend looking at the harry potter wiki for information about a canon. it’s highly possible we forgot some names or mucked up -- please send an ask our way so we can fix it before the grand opening!
be on the lookout for reserves very, very soon! and don’t hesitate to send any questions our way.

Best Returning British TV Shows from 2020
https://ift.tt/3h2mtbs
2020 brought many things with it. Brexit. Another iPhone. The 30th anniversary of Fresh Prince Of Bel Air. A Crackerjack revival, the increasingly critical state of our burning planet, the inauguration of a Gangsta Granny rollercoaster at Thorpe Park, and a global pandemic that shut down life as we know it.
A mixed bag, all told.
One thing you can largely rely on in worrying times is television, and below are the top returning British shows that fought their way through the Covid-19 lockdown to come back in 2020.
After Life series 2
Release date: Friday 24th of April, Netflix
Ricky Gervais’ emotional Netflix comedy about a misanthrope widower (Gervais) struggling to cope after the death of his wife (Kerry Godliman) will return for a second six-episode run. Filming began in September 2019, and it arrived on Netflix in April. Diane Morgan and Mandeep Dhillon co-star.
Read more:the best stand-up specials on Netflix here.
Blood series 2
Release date: Monday 27th April, 9pm, Channel 5
2018 welcomed the arrival of Sophie Petzal’s award-winning Irish domestic thriller Blood, which starred Line Of Duty‘s Adrian Dunbar as a widower under suspicion when his estranged daughter Cat (Carolina Main) returns to the family fold. It was tightly scripted with a great cast and told a satisfying and emotional story. Read our interview with its creator here. Over in Ireland, Virgin Media One aired the second series in February 2020, and it’s available on-demand on My5 in the UK here.
Brassic series 2
Release date: Thursday 7th May, Sky One
Shameless’ Danny Brocklehurst and This Is England’s Joe Gilgun worked together on rambunctious Sky comedy Brassic, which is inspired by Gilgun’s own misadventures as an errant youth trying to make a few quid. Michelle Keegan and Damien Molony co-star. NOW TV subscribers can watch the first series here.

Call The Midwife series 10
No, we don’t have much call to talk about it here on Den Of Geek, but Heidi Thomas’ Call The Midwife remains a terrifically warm British drama with a spine of steel when it comes to standing up for the NHS and wading (often literally) through the blood-soaked reality of life for women and children. Series nine finished airing on Sunday nights on BBC One in February, and it’s already been renewed for a 10th and 11th series, taking it into 2022.

New British comedy TV series for 2020: BBC, Channel 4, Sky, Dave, Amazon, Netflix

Famalam series 3
Comedy sketch show Famalam will be back for a third series and a Christmas special in 2020. Series two, which arrived on BBC Three in June 2019, brought more inventively absurd satire with it, and run number three will comprise returns to existing sketches and characters alongside new creations from Samson Kayo and the gang. Stream episodes on BBC iPlayer here.
Friday Night Dinner series 6
Release date: Friday March 27th, 10pm, Channel 4
Robert Popper’s family sitcom starring Simon Bird, Tom Rosenthal, Tamsin Greig and Paul Ritter is making an imminent return to Channel 4 in 2020 for series six. It’s about the Goodmans, a Jewish family who gather every Friday evening for, well, the name says it all. Absurd, funny and silly, it’s a lovely bit of squirrel.
Ghosts series 2
This tremendously fun comedy arrived in 2019 from the cast of Horrible Histories and Yonderland. Happily, it’s been renewed by the BBC for both a second and third series, which guarantees us a dozen more episodes of spectral shenanigans as Alison and Mike (alive) try to keep the ancestral family home going while dealing with an influx of housemates from history (dead). Filming wrapped on series two in March 2020. Stream Ghosts series one on BBC iPlayer.
His Dark Materials series 2
The first series of BBC One/HBO’s Philip Pullman fantasy adaptation took us on an epic journey north as young Lyra (Dafne Keen) travelled in search of her missing friend, and discovered a great deal more besides. A second eight-episode series adapting The Subtle Knife, book two in Pullman’s original trilogy, is in the works and expected to arrive at the end of 2020. A third potentially longer run adapting The Amber Spyglass is yet to be confirmed but that’s almost certainly just a formality at this stage. Read our spoiler-filled series one reviews and more here.
Home series 2
Aired in: February 2020
Rufus Jones’ timely comedy about a family who inadvertently smuggle a Syrian asylum seeker into the UK returning from a French holiday was recommissioned in August 2019. This warm-hearted sitcom starring Jones, Rebekah Staton and  Youssef Kerkour was a little bit drowned out in the schedules (it aired the same week as series two of huge hits Fleabag and Derry Girls) and deserves more applause.
Inside No. 9 series 5
Aired in: February 2020
Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton continue to produce excellence in their inventive, ambitious comedy-drama anthology series Inside No. 9, and its fifth run was no different. Six new half-hour episodes, in which Shearsmith and Pemberton were joined by a raft of co-stars including David Morrissey and Jenna Coleman, aired this spring on BBC Two. Read our spoiler-filled episode reviews here. And listen to the creators’ deep-dive on each episode in their ‘Inside Inside No. 9’ BBC Sounds podcast here.
Keeping Faith series 3
Celia Imrie has joined the cast of BBC Cymru Wales/S4C’s bilingual Welsh drama Keeping Faith (Un Bore Mercher in its original language) for its third and final series. Imrie will join lead Eve Myles as solicitor Faith Howells in an as-yet undisclosed role. The domestic thriller’s first series, if you remember was a huge word-of-mouth hit, eventually making its way to BBC One after unprecedented public interest. The third series will air in 2020 on S4C, and then arrive across the UK on BBCiPlayer from February 2021. Here’s our series one, episode one review.
Killing Eve series 3
Release date: Sunday April 26th.
Well, it had to come back after that cliff-hanger, didn’t it? Based on Luke Jennings’ Codename Villanelle series of novels, international spy thriller Killing Eve has been renewed for a third run. As is now traditional, there’s a new showrunner in charge for the third time around; Phoebe Waller-Bridge handed over to Emerald Fennell who has handed over to See and Fear The Walking Dead‘s Suzanne Heathcote. Jodie Comer and Sandra Oh star. Read our reviews and more here.
Last Tango In Halifax series 5
Aired in: February 2020
Happy Valley and Gentleman Jack creator Sally Wainwright returned to the series that really made her name – BBC One’s Last Tango In Halifax – for a fifth series. It’s the story of former childhood sweethearts Celia and Alan (Anne Reid and Derek Jacobi) who reconnect in their seventies and remarry, knotting together their families led by Sarah Lancashire’s formidable Caroline and Nicola Walker’s hot-headed Gillian. (See our series one to four recap here, and our episode one review here.)
Liar series 2
Release date: Monday 2nd March, ITV1
ITV rewarded this Jack and Harry Williams psychological thriller starring Downton Abbey’s Joanne Froggatt and Horatio Hornblower’s Ioan Gruffudd with a second series renewal in 2018. Expect more twists, turns and talking points.
Man Like Mobeen series 3
Aired in: January 2020
Guz Khan’s terrific Man Like Mobeen returned for a third series on BBC Three this January. It stars Khan as a reformed Brummie drug dealer trying to make an honest living while raising his little sister and boasts a hilarious ensemble cast. Stream all three series now on BBC iPlayer.

Mortimer And Whitehouse: Gone Fishing series 3
A fishing show may seem like a strange choice for this list of mostly high-profile dramas and comedies, but Gone Fishing deserves as much celebration as any of them. That’s thanks to Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse’s natural chemistry as two long-time friends, both of whom have been forced to contemplate their mortality in recent years due to serious heart problems. It’s fishing, yes, but it’s also chat, silliness and genuine human warmth.
Red Dwarf feature-length special
Release date: Thursday 9th April, 9pm, Dave.
Official confirmation from Dave that the boys from the Dwarf were returning for a 90-minute special in 2020 arrived in October 2019. Titled ‘The Promised Land’, it sees the boys from the Dwarf deal with a tyrannical cat leader and three breakaway cat clerics who worship Lister as a god. Along with the special, which is due to air in April, Dave will also be airing retrospectives celebrating the show’s long history on the BBC and since its revival. Here’s what we know so far.
Save Me Too
Release date: Wednesday 1st April, Sky Atlantic and NOW TV
Written by and starring The Walking Dead and Line Of Duty’s Lennie James, Sky Atlantic’s Save Me was one of 2018’s top shows. The crime drama set in a South London estate among a cast of lived-in characters played by the likes of Suranne Jones, Jason Flemyng, Susan Lynch and Stephen Graham, was such a critical success, a second series commission arrived hot on the finale’s heels. Lesley Manville has joined the cast this time around, which is a real treat. Read more about it here.
Tin Star series 3
This will be the third and final instalment of the Jim Worth story on Sky and Amazon. Creator Rowan Joffe will wrap up his tale of an English police officer (Tim Roth) who relocates his family to the Canadian Rockies for a fresh start, but who finds that he can’t stop his old life bleeding into the new.
Read more: Tim Roth interview: Tin Star, Reservoir Dogs and more.
The Crown series 4
Release date: Sunday the 15th of November, Netflix
Olivia Colman took over from Clare Foy as HRH Elizabeth II in The Crown series three. The time jump saw Matt Smith replaced by Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip and Helena Bonham-Carter take the reins from Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret, with Gillian Anderson playing Margaret Thatcher. Series four is expected to arrive in late 2020. Read our spoiler-free series three review here.
The Last Kingdom series 4
Release date: Sunday 26th April, Netflix
Filming started on season four in April 2019 and the first look images were released back in July 2019, and now it’s finally here. The Last Kingdom series four adapts the next two books in Bernard Cornwell’s Saxon Stories series, The Pagan Lord and The Empty Throne. Starring Alexander Dreymon as Viking-raised-Saxon Uhtred of Bebbenberg, it’s an action-packed historical drama filled with wit and characters to love. Read our spoiler-filled episode reviews and more.
There She Goes series 2
After receiving critical acclaim for its first run and a Bafta for Jessica Hynes (who is brilliant in this, as she is in most things), There She Goes is returning. Shaun Pye’s excellent family comedy-drama has been renewed for a second series that will air on BBC Two instead of its original home on BBC Four. David Tennant and Jessica Hynes play the parents of Rosie, a little girl with severe learning disabilities in Pye’s unsentimental and honest autobiographically inspired series. Read more about why we loved series one here.
The Split series 2
Aired in: February 2020 (all episodes on iPlayer)
Abi Morgan’s legal family drama starring Nicola Walker (Unforgotten, Last Tango In Halifax) returned for another six episode series early this year. It saw Hannah deal with the aftermath of her night with Christie, while at work she handled the divorce of a high-profile couple with an abusive husband. There’s no word yet on whether a third series has been commissioned, but series two certainly didn’t leave things resolved for the characters.
The Trip series 4: The Trip To Greece
Release date: Tuesday 3rd March 2020, Sky One
Filming began on the fourth series of Michael Winterbottom’s The Trip in 2019, and the new series sees foodies Steve Coogan and Rob Bryden travelling around the dining establishments of Greece while they swap impersonations and provide a glimpse into fictionalised versions of themselves. While the first two series aired on BBC Two, from series three onwards The Trip made the move to Sky Atlantic.
Taskmaster series 10
Joining the Taskmaster and little Alex Horne for series nine of Dave’s excellent Taskmaster were Jo Brand, David Baddiel, Katy Wix, Rose Matafeo and Ed Gamble. It’s all change for series ten onwards as Taskmaster moves from Dave to Channel 4. The new series is expected to air in October 2020. Read more about the move and the new series commissions here.
This Country series 3
Release date: Monday 17th of February, BBC Three 7pm
Following 2018’s one-off special, the Mucklowes are back for a third and final series of mockumentary comedy This Country. That’s another six episodes from creator-siblings Daisy May and Charlie Cooper, who are back starring as feckless cousins Kerry and Kurtan in the “typical Cotswolds village” they call home. Series three might be its best yet.

Marine Lance Corporal Joseph Warren Jones
Lance Corporal Joseph Warren Jones, 23, of Oceanside, CA, died Tuesday Oct. 18, 2016.
Joseph was born August 5, 1993 in Dallas, TX to Scott and Polly (Brocklehurst) Jones. His childhood home was in Minerva, OH where he was a member of Boy Scout Troop 150, earning his Eagle Scout, Order of the Arrow, and Fifth Year Pipestone Awards.
He was a 2011 graduate of Andrews Osborne Academy in Willoughby, OH. Known by his classmates for his kind heart, athleticism, and love of Spanish, Joey earned 14 varsity letters in five different sports. He was also named Athlete of the Year and was the recipient of the AOA Spanish Award. Joseph attended Roanoke College in VA where he was president of the Rugby Club.
Joey took great pride in being a Lance Corporal and a cryptologic Korean linguist in the United States Marine Corps. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Vista, CA. Joey had a great love for his family and friends, the outdoors, foreign languages, and his two bulldogs, Opha Mae and Semper Fido. He never missed the opportunity to make someone smile, by joking, teasing, or giving a kind word or goofy smile. The impression he left on those around him is something that will not fade.
He is survived by his beloved wife Kristen and their daughter, Tatum Rose, who is expected in March 2017; parents of Tooele, UT and motherin- law Kathy Barnes of Patterson, CA; grandparents, Jerrel and Patsy Jones of Plano, TX, grandmother-in law Virginia Pociengel, his favorite sister Jordan, brothers- and sisters-in law Nathan (Donna) Straughn, Joey Barnes, and Seann (Jessica Baltazar) Barnes; aunts and uncles Carolyn (Newt) Spurgin, Steve (MaryLinda) Jones, and Ben (Brenda) Brocklehurst; a nephew and niece, David and Kendall Barnes; and many cousins: Betsy, Bill, Brock, Colton, Elisa, Emily, Faith, Grant, Katie, Lorissa, Nicole, Robert, Robin and Stephanie. Will you read and give me advice on my 7 page Jane Eyre fan fiction?
George Jean Eyre Rivers Chapter I: A Cold Dark Night Red on the walls, red on the bed Red on the clothes mean somebody’s dead. A cold, dark night. A rainy, frightening night. A terrifying, sad night. George Rivers stepped out of his carriage and into the shadow of the Lowood School. “Go”, he told the carriage driver. “Flee. You are no longer wanted here.” His strong words could not sway the carriage driver, a hard, experienced man, who cared for his master and insisted upon his staying. “You will not be able to return, and will surely die of starvation,” he said, trying not to appear too firm. “The nearest village is more than a fortnight away on foot.” George stared at his carriage driver, incredulous, and was about to reprimand him when he found that the driver was correct, although he could not have another soul on his conscience. “I will meet you half a mile down the road.”, he said assertively, making sure the carriage driver could not say anything contrary in response. “You may go there now.” The driver sped off, throwing a splash of rain over George’s coat. A week ago, George had received a letter, four days after his son, St John had disappeared. Rivers knew what was happening, and he had brought his entire fortune, 12,000 pounds, in a large leather bag. He would have paid double that to get his son back- and Robert Brocklehurst knew it. The imposing figure of the Lowood school was one that would terrify almost anyone, which was a curious characteristic for a school to have. It was almost as if the school was hiding something- but to George Rivers, there was nothing to hide. He had three wooden planks, sharpened to a point, and a small wooden cross around his neck, hidden by a crimson cravat. To a passerby, he would appear as a religious man, but to the inhabitants of the Lowood school, he was a man who knew. George quickly scaled the steep stairs, making quick work of the aged gothic concrete. He was prepared for a fight- but as he swung open the large, imposing, aged iron doors that led into Lowood he was greeted by an empty-looking, but large open space. George lingered by the door as his eyes adjusted to the darkness. He knew that he wouldn’t be seeing much of any type of light for a while, and the moon had spoiled him. Before he could start to make his way into the dark hall, the great iron doors swung closed behind him, resounding in a bang that somehow chilled his every bone. It was one thing to prepare, for a grandiose imagination would be able to come up with all sorts of scenarios that one could be prepared for. The difference here, however, was that no lofty imagination was creating these scenarios, and George was completely at the mercy of others. Another thing that George had not fully fathomed back in Moor House was the realness of it all, and the fear, and this was the thing that held George the most captive during his descent into the underbelly of Lowood. Out of the blue (or out of the darkness), a dull hum started to throb, which George could almost detect out of the corner of his ear. Within a minute or two the hum started to grow in volume until George’s head started to ache so badly that he was about to scream and then- it stopped- and Robert Brocklehurst and 20 of his closest friends and comrades appeared where nobody had been before. The inhabitants of the shadows dressed like they lived there. A black waistcoat, with a black tie, a black hat, and a black cravat covering something a little more gruesome than a cross. They blended in so well that George did not notice the dark denizens until Robert Brocklehurst began to speak. “Have you the twelve thousand pounds?’, he asked, in a voice so booming that George was forced against the wall by its sheer power. George lifted the burlap sack that contained his entire fortune. “It is here”, he said, trying to get some power in his powerless position. “I brought the money. Now, where is my son?”. Brocklehurst looked puzzled until a few of his accomplices prompted him. “Oh, that thing”, he said in a nonchalant manner. “We’ll give him back to you once you give us the money”. Foolishly- so, very foolishly, and out of pure desperation to have his son back in his arms- the response out of George’s mouth was “yes”. Still scared of the man, George threw the bag of money at Brocklehurst, whose masterful reflexes were the only things that caught the bag in time. Brocklehurst took the money- and slowly, a smile started to spread across his face. That smile quickly became raucous laughter, which his cronies soon joined him in doing. “What is it?!’ shouted a distressed George, whose fears were coming to light. The room started to shake and then- it stopped. A still smiling Robert Brocklehurst looked George dead in the eyes and told him, as happy as a cherub, that his son was dead. “We killed him on day one. Why would we need him when we could get the money and then do away with its owner?”. It was as if the walls were closing in on George- but the night dwellers trying to kill him was one scenario that he had planned for. He threw back his waistcoat and took a stake in each hand. George charged at the center, which was most unexpected for Robert Brocklehurst, who narrowly dodged being impaled. That unfortunate deed fell to George Hendrickson, who used to be a banker with a lovely wife and a beautiful daughter until his wife mysteriously died, his daughter moved away, and he was suddenly unable to work during the normal operating hours of a bank. Hendrickson died instantly, which was the best thing that had happened to him in the past 55 years. George flailed at the mob and was able to take out another two until the remaining eighteen surrounded him and tied him to a chair in the middle of the room. Once George awoke, Brocklehurst began to laugh. “We did not kill your son.” he said, “but we have something far worse for the both of you in store”. The group of former businessmen around him began to laugh. “We could not possibly kill your son,” said Brocklehurst with glee. “We made him one of us.” The crowd began to part to reveal a small boy, aged no older than seven, with eyes as crimson as George’s cravat. “It’s okay,” said Brocklehurst to the little boy in a soothing tone.” feed”. The boy crept forward, and said, to Brocklehurst, in a low, quiet, but still frightening tone, “Thank you, daddy. I will enjoy him.” George, terrified, reached for his hidden stake to try and claw his way out. Miraculously, the stake was reachable and soon the ropes did not hold George anymore. He stood, and charged at the boy. In the split second, before his stake pierced the heart of his heartless son, George Jean Eyre Rivers said three words- “I’m sorry, son.”. Chapter II: The Penultimate Are Lucky On the trip from boarding school back to Moor House for winter break and Christmas festivities, St. John Rivers daydreamed all the way home. He dreamed of Moor House’s pine trees, out on the front lawn, to be decorated with popcorn and ornaments, and covered with a thin white dusting of the snow that had happened earlier that morning. He dreamed of jovially forcing his dad to come along with him on a trip down the hill, on the back of their rickety old wooden sled. He dreamed of being snug and warm inside Moor House’s firm wooden planks. St. John was now 13, almost a man. He would have to pick a job soon, and he was eyeing a missionary position. The far-off lands of the east were what St. John usually dreamed of, and the missionary position was the perfect way to see those places and still fulfill his duties both to the church and to his family. He hadn’t grown in a while, which was a little strange, but perhaps he was just short and young-looking. St John did not have many concerns, and his happy go lucky attitude was authentic. The carriage pulled up to Moor House and young St John Rivers jumped out and ran inside. His age had made him less mature, and once he had greeted his father he started to beg to go sled riding. They had obviously taken part in this conversation before, with lots of jokes and witty banter thrown in throughout. St John ran outside and became completely enthralled in the sport, leaving George Rivers and his brother John Eyre to discuss him. “Do we have to do it this year” George lamented. “The boy’s only thirteen, he doesn’t have to turn into a man just yet.” “Listen to yourself”, exclaimed the exasperated John Eyre. “The boy’s only thirteen, he doesn’t have to turn into a man just yet” he mocked. “The boy’s thirteen! He has to turn into a man or someone will notice what is going on.” “I suppose you’re right,” George said sadly. He was not ready for his son to grow up, and even though this would come with no pain and angst like real growth, it would cause George to no longer look at his son like a child. He smiled in spite of this, and joked “at least Diana and Mary are still children!” The operation was performed at night time. They had done it once before, the transformation from a toddler into a child. It was nothing to do it again, yet George still felt uneasy. The red rug before the doorway into his son’s room felt foreboding, like a sign of animosity from some unknown deities. John Eyre appeared behind him, and tapped him on the shoulder, causing George his second biggest terrified moment of the night. John had brought the body, a steam-powered wonder of machinery that was initially made custom for the richest merchant in all of Italy (what he wanted with a robot replica nobody knew) but John sold to George after hearing the news and seeing the giant sack of money George waved in front of his eyes. To John, money came first, and family came second. They walked, with the body, into the boy’s room. He was in a catatonic state, and would not wake up no matter what happened. His consciousness was on a small disk embedded in his head. John lit a candle and asked George to hold it as he got the consciousness loose. The larger body’s head had a similar disk drive which George opened and John placed the disk into. “What now”, asked George. “Now”, said John, “we wait.” They waited for a long time which almost felt like forever until, right before the sun began to paint a golden crescent across the sky, St John Eyre Rivers began to awake. “Hello,” he said. “Father, Uncle.” George’s eyes began to glow, and his knuckles turned white. He got a scared and sad look on his face. “John,” he said quietly, silently, and scared. “What has happened to my boy?”. “The personality. It didn’t get embedded”, said John grimly. The look on George’s face told John everything he needed to know. Instantly, George was tackled by John. “No!” John screamed. “I won’t let you do this to yourself.” “I can’t lose my son again” George screamed, tears streaming down his face. “Not like this. I can’t lose him.” “It’s okay,” said John, trying to shush George. “It’s going to be okay.”. “No!” George shouted, trying to wrench himself away from John in a fit of rage. “It’s never going to be okay again! It will never be okay. I can’t lose my son again”- and George started to break into tears when with one wrench he freed himself from John’s grasp. “It’s going to be better this way, John,” George said calmly, his screaming over. “I can’t lose my son again. It’s going to be better.” He drew out his gun, placed it to his temple, and fired. Red on the walls, red on the bed Red on the clothes mean somebody’s dead.

“His were the simple heart and open hand and honest faults he never strove to hide. Problems of life he could not understand but as a man would wish to die, he died. Now though he will not ride with us again, his merry spirit seems our comrade yet,  Freed from the power of weariness and pain, forbidding us to mourn or to forget”
Memorial to HC Brocklehurst, son of the local squire, killed in Burma 1942.
The Roaches, as you can see, has sustained damage from the fires of August 2018 but is on its way back indomitably. (1 and 5 were taken by firefighters at the time and the rest were taken by me, 3 in August 2015, 7 in February 2015 and the rest last Sunday).
The rocky outcrop had its name bestowed on it by the monks of Dieulacres Abbey, which stood here from 1214 until it was torn apart by the tyrant Henry VIII in 1538.
It was bought by William de Trafford, whose dynasty lived here for centuries and built the Grade II-listed Swythamley Hall (now a closed private estate), until in 1832 it was bought by Macclesfield industrialist and Liberal politician John Brocklehurst; like so many industrialists of the time, notably Sir Robert Peel, he wanted to set himself up as a country squire.
His descendants lived here for decades, most famously war hero, mountaineer and conservationist Sir Philip Brocklehurst, whose biggest impact on the ecosystem here was the famous release of his collection wallabies when he went to war in 1939; it’s believed by some they are still here, though I fear they are probably extinct. Sir Philip died in 1975, though an excellent beer named after him is brewed by Wincle Brewery.
At the Hanging Stone, Sir Philip engraved a memorial to his brother Henry Courtney Brocklehurst, which I feel is fitting for the site, now managed (since 2013) by the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, of which I’m a proud member, and which is fighting valiantly to undo the damage.
This is now a site for mountaineers (as well as Sir Philip, Don Whillans famously trained here) and sanctuary for refugees from 21st century life such as Doug Moller, Lord of the Roaches, and Jeff Kent, and it will not be defined by the senseless damage inflicted on it by fuckwits, but by the response which locals, visitors and environmentalists have made in the spirit of Henry and Philip, which I urge you all now to join.
