“The top is from For Love & Lemons, the pants from Romantic Store, shoes are Demonias, jacket and skirt are thrifted, and my hat is from Alondra Records in Bushwick. A really sweet lady crochets all kinds of hats and anything else you can think of there. What currently inspires my style definitely comes from Fruits magazine (just a little bit,) the fashion of the rococo era, and very fem/masc styles— I typically like mixing the two for comfortability. Here, I just threw stuff together, so I wasn’t expecting a picture to be taken!”

Being drawn to colours that they “associate with sunrise and sunset-times of transition and daily possibility” Livien Yin's paintings have an awe-inspiring palette and such a delicate, considered finish. “I try to render the way that sunlight feels against the skin, like a caress of the subjects in the painting.” Another recognisable quality of the artists work is their repetition of imagery, specifically hands and fruit. Sometimes the hands frame the face of the subject, and the fruit lies half eaten. And, sometimes the two images come together – a model's hands lazily peel an orange, another clasps an apple, mid-bite.
Livien Yin explains that their focus on hands is a means a of referencing both manual labour that characterised the first major wave of Chinese immigration and their connection to Chinese culture and cooking; “I like to paint hands to commemorate the cultural legacies and ‘acts of care’ passed down from the generations before us.” Whereas the fruit has a more specific reference – “when ‘paper sons and daughters’ were preparing to be interrogated at Angel Island Immigration Station, they memorised the details of their new identities using something called ‘coaching notes’ which were sometimes secretly sent to them inside fruit.” And, simultaneously, when placed in the hands of women, Livien intends for it to be a metaphor for sexual agency.

Let's say Harry is aware that he is REALLY loaded. He knows how rich the Potter family is, and how Sirius gave him money from a separate vault as well (Not to mention him also possibly inheriting the Black fortune). Imagine him, Ron, and Hermoine wandering around Hogsmeade and the two found things that they really like.
Ron saw a chess set that is made of old wood while Hermoine's is a set of limited edition books of spells etc. They stared at it for so long but they knew that they couldn't afford it so they just walk away to look at some other stuff.
But Harry noticed the longing looks thrown at those things and just casually shrugged his shoulders. Well, he hadn't bought anything for his friends yet for their birthdays so...
When they got back to Hogwarts, imagine the shocked look on Ron's and Hermoine's faces as they stared at what Harry bought for their birthdays.
"Mate," Ron choked, "this is NOT what I was staring at." It really isn't because this chess set is made of old wood and GOLD. Harry just shrugged and smiled at Ron.
"Well, its for your birthdays!"
"Harry, this is not just for a birthday. This could be for the rest of our birthdays! Do you know how much this set costs?!" Hermoine shouted, disbelief still written in her face as she holds a set of HARDBOUND books with gold accentuating its cover.
"Just a couple hundred galleons here and there-"
"Seriously? Are you hearing yourself? JUST a couple hundred of galleons? Just???" By now Harry is fighting a smile on his face. They're not ready for Christmas then... And the rest of their birthdays.

LOVE IS SAND ITS SAND ITS ALL BEEN SAND LOVE IS FUCKING SAND
Tumblr media
Anyone remember this? From chapter 42?
This was following his conversation with Chris the day he started going out with Mitsumi. He can’t get a grasp on his feelings.
Love is.. slipping away.. out of reach.. not seen often (he’s only been to the beach once b4). We know that Shima has struggled to have his feelings acknowledged growing up, and this metaphor encapsulates it well.
Then we have chapter 53
Tumblr media
Mika walks up to Shima (who she has previously confessed to and since moved on), with a half complaint of ‘its actually kind of hard isn’t it? To walk on the sand’
To tread your feelings is hard. It’s hard work.. to love… to be loved.
But it’s not really a lament, it’s more of an affirmation. All their friends wanted to walk along that beach- together. And it’s ultimately worth it, even if it isn’t as easy as expected.
Tumblr media
Then in comes Mitsumi… she doesn’t know the context of their conversation but she hears them query about something in the sand, that they don’t recognise.
She says there is life here. We can find it if we dig. It would’ve been nice to try sooner.
She’s so accustomed to love, she grew up with it from all her family and friends, and here she is showing her friends its got so much there if only you look, if only you have a hand. I can help.
Tumblr media
Then Shima asks her to show him that life that’s there.
Love. Is. Sand.

There’s been a lot of (very excellent!) discussion recently about Brigid and Stephen and how much she’s loved, and I feel like that’s a very good segue into a topic which I’ve been musing over for a while: namely, Patrick O’Brian’s treatment of love in general. Because honestly I feel like one of the things that’s most captivated me about the Aubreyad in general is the sheer amount of love it contains, the vast majority of which is (canonically, at least) non-romantic, and I think that the further I get into the series, the more that strikes me.
Like honestly I cannot even begin to explain how incredibly good POB is at portraying loving relationships, whether they’re friendships, marriages, or parents and children (/surrogate parent and child, as the case may be). I’m actually genuinely not sure if I’ve ever read something like it. I think that a lot of media really struggles with platonic relationships, which is a question that probably deserves a 400-page thesis about it and that I’m not really qualified to answer, but the Aubreyad somehow manages to create relationships that are all so imbued with love that it genuinely does not matter whether or not the people in them are in love or not. While I’m certainly here for reading Stephen and Jack as a romantic relationship, there’s a certain point where I actually don’t care whether or not they’re friends or lovers, because the complexities of what they feel for each other and what they mean in each other’s lives is just as deep either way. And all the relationships in the book are like that: Bonden and the Surprises looking after Stephen, Jack with Mowett and Pullings, Stephen and Sophie, and on and on into infinity.
I think the thing that makes me the most insane about this is that these relationships all feel so unbelievably, viscerally real. The love that’s stored there is the same sort of love that I feel for the people in my own life, with all the inevitable disagreements and exasperation and imperfection that it comes with. I think it’s incredibly difficult to capture that exact feeling in writing, and yet somehow he’s managed to do it. There’s been so much talk about the way in which people in our day and age and media in general struggle to talk about friendship and platonic relationships as meaningful, and I’m not saying that just any writer could go out and weave a tapestry so complex as the Aubreyad does, but reading these books is like a balm for that. There’s something so reassuring in knowing that a romantic relationship is not the be-all-end-all for any of the characters in these books, no matter how you look at it. Each of them is surrounded by a web of people who are deeply implicated in their existence and who truly care what happens to them.
I think fiction, by its nature of needing to bring characters in to serve a role in a linear plot, doesn’t often leave room for love of this kind, and I don't want to be critical of that, because not all narratives can be like the one Patrick O'Brian's written (which is 100% okay—it should be that way, that's how narratives work!). But there’s something so healing about reading a story in which all of the characters are so deeply loved. It’s like a mirror; looking into it, you can see your own relationships, and by extension, just how loved you are, even if most of the time you don’t realize it. Humans are not lonely creatures, and no one captures that better than Patrick O’Brian.

Valentine’s Day headcanons
-Giorno does the thing where he will fake being stood up on a Valentine’s date at a restaurant so that he could maybe get his meal for free. It’s worked every time but once. He always brings flowers and chocolate with him to make it look more convincing.
-Bruno will change the TV in the living room to a channel that has really sappy romance movies on all day. Then he will hide the remote in his zipper portals and watch as Narancia tries to find where the remote is hiding so he can watch something way less cheesy. It’s Bruno’s entertainment for the day.
-Abbacchio uses Valentine’s Day as an excuse to buy a fancier bottle of wine than usual. He also finds entertainment in watching Narancia frantically trying to find the TV remote.
-Mista is always extra dramatic on Valentine’s Day (because he is single). He spends 2/3rds of the day crying and then around dinner time he will treat himself to an extra fancy meal and dessert. And then he will cry later that night when he gets home to the romance movies playing in the living room.
-Narancia doesn’t understand Valentine’s Day, it’s too lovey dovey for him, and he would rather spend the day binge watching one of his funny shows than have to watch the romance movies. He thinks Mista hid the remote.
-Fugo doesn’t think about Valentine’s Day too much until he remembers that his favorite bakery will have a sale on chocolate covered strawberries the next day. He also always ends up reading a romance novel, and then complaining about how poorly written it was.
-Trish loves Valentine’s Day for the aesthetics and she always buys a ton of chocolate for herself. She makes little Valentine’s for everyone that say cute things like “roses are red, violets are blue, if you steal my chocolate I’m gonna kill you <3” and “I tolerate you <3” on them.
