The Nature-Culture Divide
Tumblr media
Something I have seen a lot of people within the Solarpunk sphere talk about and wonder is: "When did we stop seeing ourself as something outside of nature?" And given that I actually had a module on that (Social Geography, best module I ever had, given we had an anarchist professor!) I thought I could quickly explain this one.
So, the names come, in the end, from Latin and back when those words were considered in Latin, the difference was, that nature was a thing that was innate, while culture had volition behind it. You could change nature into culture by putting work into it.
Something that might surprise you is, that the idea of nature then was never quite big for most of European history. And let me make one thing clear: While we have these ideas also played with in Buddhist culture - especially in East Asia - the way we define it right now is a Western idea.
And that idea... Well, that idea came with colonialism. The thing many do not realize is, how much of the rules and "lines in the sand" that we use in our culture came from colonialisation, came from the desire to make "our" culture different from "theirs". It is shown in the way we eat, in the way we raise children, in the way we view gender and sexuality. And, yes, in the artificial border between nature and culture.
Before I tell you more about this, let me please say here: Yes, this is contradictive. I am aware of it. I am not the one who came up with the contradiction. White settlers did that all on their own.
When the settlers came to America they found a landscape very, very different from what they were used to from Europe. After all, Europe has been changed through human hand for at that point about 1600 years. (And for you Europeans out there: Researching how much forest your local area might have lost through the Romans is always a "fun" thing to do! Because the Romans destroyed a lot of European ancient forests.) In Europe, even at the wildest places, there was usually some evidence of human habitation - but this was not true for the Americas. Not because there were no people there, but rather because the people interacted with the environment very differently.
See, the European idea - while never quite that defined until this point - was really, really based on this thought that nature can be turned into culture. And that this transformation was in fact a good thing to happen. So, when the settlers arrived in the Americas they did not see "culture" there, only "nature" and set out to turn that "nature" into "culture".
Of course, we - modern people living today - do realize that indigenous people had in fact cultures of all sorts and that the actual difference was, that they just did not see that culture as something different from nature, rather than a part of it. Because their culture had not been influenced by Romans. But the settlers back then did not see this or rather did not want to see this. So they "cultured" the land, with the ideas about nature and culture being further formalized at that point.
It kinda stayed like this until the late 19th century, when Madison Grant, the originator of eco fascism came to be influencial. And now he saw something that the settlers until this point were unable to see: The indigenous people do stuff with the nature around them! They change it! For example through controlled burning of forests and things like that.
And this made Madison Grant very angry, because he was very much off the opinion that nature should be "unsoiled" by human hands. So... he made sure that those indigenous people got once more pushed out of the areas they were living, with the same areas being declared natural parks and no longer interfered with by humans (except, of course, all the tourists who destroyed it bit by bit). Leading... To a lot more wild fires.
So, where does this leave us in terms of the culture/nature divide?
Well, the idea has been there since ancient Rome and has very much influenced how much we view nature as its own thing. But within Rome nature was still not quite seen as the opposite of culture - as one could turn into the other. Under the Roman view an abandoned house or a field that was no longer cared for would turn back into nature, while anything could become culture just by interacting with humans.
The modern view really came through colonialism and the way colonialist did not understand (and did not want to understand) indigenous practices. This made people more and more drift towards the understanding of humans being an entirely different thing from nature.
But this is wrong, of course. We are part of nature. We are just animals with fingers and slightly larger brains. And many indigenous cultures understood this. In the end it was the greed of some that made us loose this connection to nature. And that is exactly why we are in this climate change related mess right now.

“Would you be able to write a blurb with the prompt “Don’t let this one go. he’s perfect for you."?? Love your content btw and please don’t feel pressured at all!!” So srry I didn’t specify- but this ask is for Percy 😭
[𝟏𝟐:𝟒𝟐 𝐩𝐦]
"Don’t let this one go. He's perfect for you.”
pairing: percy jackson x reader
warning: none?
category: slice of life, blurb
Silena purses her lips, spoon slowly swirling her tea. You don’t dare look at your sister, the older girl sending you knowing eyes. Already the side of your face feels her demanding presence and she waits for you to give in. You couldn’t avoid her forever but you still try as if you weren’t sitting right across from her.
“Y/n,” she says, her words leaving her lips like a tired mother. Shutting your eyes tight, you wait for her scolding. “Don’t do this again.”
“I can’t,” you say softly, eyes leaving your posh surroundings and retreating to the cup in your hands. Silena frowns, a soft sigh of sympathy leaving her lips.
Your last breakup was hard. Hard enough to yell at the sky at your mother, begging for an answer as to why you were faced with so much turmoil. In the aftermath, you had lots of support. Your sisters helped during your heartbreak but it didn’t stop you from becoming so cynical.
A child of Aphrodite who vowed to never love again? You were a walking irony for years, dodging anyone and everyone who showed romantic interest in you. You’re sure your mother has arranged many admirers to test your oath and time and time again, you’ve proved to her you were serious.
“Percy is a great guy and he really likes you. C’mon.” Silena’s practically begging but you hardly flinch. You’ve spent too long guarding your heart to undo it all like this.
Sure, Percy is handsome and sweet but so was your last boyfriend. If it all falls apart again, you don’t know if your heart can take it.
“Y/n, please. Don’t let this one go. He's perfect for you.”
Silena’s eyes are pleading. All the other guys who pined for you didn’t feel right. She never bothered you about your oath unlike your other siblings. They would try to convince you you just needed a rebound, someone to distract you but Silena never agreed. She was sure a time would come where you’d met the right person. That one day her natural intuition would tell her, this is the one for, Y/n!
The day came when she saw you and Percy sharing a meal at the park outside of New Rome University. The way he looked at you, how he made you laugh and smile, it was perfect. She couldn’t see you with anyone else.
Even now as she waits for your response, she knows you feel it too but you’re ignoring it, choosing to crawl back into your bubble.
There’s a moment where the two of you communicate with your eyes. There’s a back and forth between you refusing, her begging and then her asking you to be real; you couldn’t refuse the chemistry, the obvious pull from the fates as much as you tried.
“Fine!” You frown, heart already beating fast with anxiety. “I’ll go on ONE date, only if he asks.”
“Oh, he will,” Silena sits back in her seat triumphantly. She already knew because Percy had asked her if he should ask. As she picks up her phone to text him the okay, she has a single passing thought.
I’m so going to be her maid of honor at this wedding.

the forehead kiss scene is so obviously homoerotic but i feel like the tomgregs don’t talk enough the “wrestle me to the ground” scene. because there is NO explanation for that.
like yes, we know that tom is upset with greg because he’ll be leaving for parks and he won’t going to prison. you could read more deeply into that, but set it aside for a moment. tldr; our pathetic meow meow, tom wambs, has offered to go to prison for logan and he’s regretting it.
i believe the nero/sporus comparison is homoerotic enough on its own –– but one could play devil’s advocate and say that tom only wants companionship from greg because shiv has been offering him little to none. and because of the prison ordeal, he’s in desperate need of both companionship + emotional support. it’s been established that he projects the failures of his marriage onto greg, so –– fair enough? push your wife down the stairs, castrate your assistant. cool.
+ in a deeper sense, the nero/sporus metaphor is seemingly tied to tom’s feelings of emasculation. it’s no surprise that tom says this hours after he challenges shiv’s dominance in their relationship and loses ... miserably.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
correct me if i’m wrong, but sexual practices in ancient rome were based on activity and passivity –– aka, masculine dominance and feminine submissiveness. (citing my classics prof for this, lmao.) from what i’ve gleaned, this dichotomy is what defined social views on homosexuality in ancient rome.
it would make sense for tom to read this story of an ancient roman emperor and be reminded of his desire to be more dominant/masculine in his relationships.
summarily, if he can’t be dominant in his relationship with shiv, he can be dominant in his relationship with greg. it’s an unromantic perspective, but ... oh well. succ isn’t too romantic to begin with. it would also be a way for tom to (unhealthily) reconcile with his romantic feelings toward greg. ie., sure, i’m attracted to him, but that doesn’t make me any less masculine. just think of nero the emperor!
it seems to me that tom wants to be seen as a masculine man. (as a matter of fact, he makes mention of his masculinity in the scene above.) which is understandable, given that his relationship with siobhan is depicted as very unequal. so yeah –– it could be written off as standard feelings of emasculation coming from a man, but honestly?
i’d argue that due to a lifetime of repression, internalized homophobia & some preconceived notions, tom believes that his homosexual desires make him less masculine. i believe it stems from his repressed homosexuality. like –– why else would he be so desperate to appear masculine, despite ... not being very masculine by nature.
(he may have even sought out this story in particular so that he could feel better about having these romantic desires for a man to begin with ...)
so that explains the nero/sporus reference.
but when tom says “wrestle me to the ground”, what is he asking for? as in, that is a genuine question. maybe i’m just tomgreg-pilled, but it really does seem like:
tom is just so desperate to know greg’s touch that he’s willing to wrestle him, like the nude men who fought in bygone stadiums. (something which conveniently relates to that book about the romans that tom mentions.)
he’ll never know his touch as a lover, tom tells himself –– so he’ll have to settle for this. after all, he’s being sent to prison and greg is all set for his new career in parks, where he’ll no doubt forget all about him. it’s now or never.
it’s an act of desperation.
and greg says no, understandably –– but tom persists. he’s worked himself up, fists raised, pushing greg up against a wall. a force of anger and repression. as usual, he’s just too much. he’s self-destructing. at last, greg stands up for himself tells tom to stop, which he does. it’s then the humiliation sets in. he’s humiliated himself.
Tumblr media
and THIS –– this is when it comes full circle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
tom feels stupid and embarrassed, so he tries to make greg feel doubly stupid and embarrassed by mocking him. it’s a see-through attempt at saving face. downright childish.
he then looks spurned and troubled for a few moments before he shouts, “neither do i, greg! it was a JOKE, you idiot!” when it ... obviously wasn’t.
he’s the picture of someone who’s been rejected and can’t seem to take it: hurt and defensive.
it’s strange, no? tom bullies greg all the damn time and he’s never once thought to make excuses about it. he doesn’t feel an ounce of shame when he calls greg a coke whore in front of kendall. but this time –– this time he feels embarrassed.
and i immediately think back to their first conversation. the infamous “would you kiss me? if i asked you to?” because ... tom said that was a joke, too. maybe it wasn’t.
ALL I’M SAYING IS THAT I LOVE THIS SCENE. matthew and nicholas are goddamn phenomenal and i really hope season 4 brings us some closure in regards to the psychosexual power struggle that is tomgreg. ahhhh!

Oct 2023 issue of B'sLOG translation Special Feature: Hyper☆Summer Date
Oct 2023 issue of B'sLOG translation Special Feature: Hyper☆Summer Date Feat. Mammon, Solomon
[PLEASE DO NOT REUPLOAD] (reblogging/comments okay)
The brightness of the summer sun pushes us to be more open than usual. To enjoy this fun season, the special feature will be called "Summer Date"! Please look out for the happy summer date plan he chooses ♪
(Characters are given questions according to the place they what to go on a date with - either the beach, an amusement park, or a summer festival.)
MAMMON - DATE IN AN AMUSEMENT PARK
➀ Today is a date with your loved one at an amusement park! What matching items would you like to wear together? I'd think of headbands of the new Devil's Coast mascot that recently debuted, Awoofa*. Puttin' that on and uploadin' to Devilgram is all over the rage, man!
② It's lunchtime at the amusement park! Which do you prefer, the restaurants or lunch boxes? Either one of those shall do, but I'd like to buy from one of those carts over there and walk around while eatin'. Isn't that the way to have fun with them as much as we wanna?
③ Your loved one wants to go to a haunted house! Can you lead the way? BUT OF COURSE???? Why did'cha even bother askin' that???? Huh? Huh???
④ Riding the Ferris Wheel near closing time, you'll do this to the person you love at its highest point…… Hm, I guess I'mma just say what I thought of at the time. Like where's the House of Lamentation, how small the Demon Lord's Castle is, et cetera. It's pointless expecting me to say things that Lucifer or Satan would say. I'm sure they know that too. Oh, maybe I'll ask them if they had a good time with me. That's the most curious thing I wanna know.
*unofficial translation of Garurufa/ガルルファ. No relevant info in the game has been found regarding this new mascot (as of Sep 2023). Note that this should a different mascot from 'Devilcat/デビネコ', a red teddy bear-like creature with horns on its head.
SOLOMON - DATE IN A SUMMER FESTIVAL
➀ Today is a festival date with someone you like! What kind of clothes do you want them to wear? When in Rome, they tell me to do as the Romans do, so it's gonna be a yukata. Wearing something different from the usual can make someone excited, right? I want them to feel excited too, so I'll probably wear a yukata too.
② It's so crowded that there's a chance of getting separated! What would you do? It's unthinkable that I'd lose sight of my cute apprentice, though I might pretend that it would be a natural excuse to hold hands with them. But since I think they might see right through me, I might honestly say that I want to hold hands with them (laughs).
③ At a target shooting range, they asked you to get "the one" for them! Do you have what it takes for shooting? If my partner is looking forward for me to win, I'll win even if the lottery doesn't include a winning ticket. Eh, no magic is allowed? Hmm, even so I'll give it a shot!
④ Watching the fireworks near the festival's end, you'll do this to the person you love whose eyes are shining bright…… Maybe I won't be able to say anything to them because I'd be falling hard for them who is trying their best to watch the fireworks. Maybe deep inside I'd be saying "I'm glad we're able to make good memories".

First date magic
Nahoya (Smiley) Kawata x Male Reader
-> Requested by Rome
Masterlist
Tumblr media
Souya raised an eyebrow at Nahoya, who had changed into more causal fancier clothes in the staff room of their Sugoaku Restaurant. He looked nervously skittish, fiddling with his hair and tie.
Souya rolled his eyes, shaking his head and sighed. Putting one of the glasses aside he was cleaning, he walked over from behind the bar to Nahoya, swatting his hand away and fixing the tie.
«Why are you so nervous dumbshit? This isn't the first date you had with [Name], Hoya.» Souya said,
Nahoya knew his brother was right, this wasn't the first date he had with [Name] over the years of being together and married. Still he had a perfectly, dumb, reason to feel nervous tonight.
«I know, but I've planned something special,» Nahoya didn't elaborate any further about this and Souya shrugged his shoulder, returning back to his work, Saturdays are always the busiest days and the Bar would be filled to brim anytime soon. Maybe adding a bar to their Sugoaku Restaurant wasn't such a good idea.
«Anyways, you should get going or do you wanna be late?»
~~~
You sat on a bench in the park, waiting for Nahoya. The weather was nice tonight, not to hot nor too cold, just the fine middle of temperature.
Even though you could've cooked something or ordering some food, Nahoya had insisted to go on a Date, saying that they hadn't gone in so long and that he felt like it.
«[Name]! Sorry, I hope didn't make you wait too long.» Nahoya stopped in front you, had run the few last meters and needed just a moment to gain his breath again. Nahoya might be a fit man in his thirties, but even he feels sometimes the slowing process of getting older.
You smiled at your Husband, waving your hand as a sign to tell him that it is alright. You found it amusing how Nahoya's hair started to slowly go back into curly, he probably had spend an hour or two to straight it out.
Nahoya and his, probably slight, obsession of having straight hair was something you still wouldn't quite seem to understand. You loved his natural curly hair more, having told him that many times and yet he still wants doesn't want it that way and getting annoyed when it curls back.
«It's fine babe, so were are we going?» you asked him, a bit curious to what he has planned.
«It's a surprise» Nahoya took your hand, pulling you up from the bench and started walking with you further into the park.
~~~
The walk at first was quiet, as you both simply enjoyed the silence and company of each other.
«Isn't that the park where you asked me for out for our very first date?» you asked, musing back to the fond memories you had of it.
«And where I asked you to marry me? It is. Remember when I felt into that pond?»
You did remember; Nahoya wanted to show you something in the pond, a rock or whatever and then he tripped and fell right into the water. It wasn't too deep but enough to be drenched.
«Yeah, I found it funny how annoyed you got over your wet hair, fearing it would go back into curly again and all your hard work to waste. Something you still do even to this day, love.»
«I never told you, but before I had just a crush and that was the moment when I had really fallen in love with you.» Nahoya told you, stopping now exactly at the pond. You hoped he wouldn't fall in again.
«How so?» you asked, not remembering anything heroic or romantic you have done back then.
Your Husband just shrugged his shoulders, turning to you and bringing your knuckles up to his mouth, giving them a kiss.
«[Name], we're being married for over ten years now and I know I can be a annoying shit sometimes, but there is something I wanted to ask you tonight.»
Nahoya paused, hands getting all clammy and feeling a rise of nervousness again. Chest tighten ever so slightly. He knew the question was silly to ask, but he wanted to nonetheless.
«[Name] Kawata, would you do me the honour again of marrying me?»
The upcoming silence had worried Nahoya, he feared you could and would say, no.
Nahoya relaxed, when he saw the once small smile on your lips turning into a bigger one.
«Yes! Yes I do!» you almost had shouted it, grabbing Nahoya's face you smashed your lips onto his. Kissing him this way, just like you had back then when he asked the first time.
Nahoya could ask a thousand time and you would always say yes to it. You loved this men, your husband, so endlessly. Nothing, expect for death, could apart you from him.
