LA RECENSIONE IN BREVE

- Dune mette in scena solo la prima metà del romanzo, gettando solide basi per reggere una storia estremamente complessa.

- Villeneuve prende decisioni che possono piacere o meno, ma dimostra piena consapevolezza della materia narrativa che sta adattando.

- Il minuzioso world building non rappresenta una premessa, ma è essenza stessa di Dune.

«Io sono un seme» è ciò che dice Paul Atreides a circa metà del romanzo scritto da Frank Herbert nel 1965. Una rivelazione indottagli della spezia geriatrica, la droga che altera la percezione spazio-temporale, e che impregna l’aria di Arrakis, o meglio conosciuto come Dune. È in quel momento che il ragazzo smette di essere, improvvisamente, solo un ragazzo. E per la prima volta, Paul, figlio del Duca Leto Atreides e Lady Jessica, educato dalla donna alle sacre vie del Bene Gesserit, esprime consapevolezza di sé, trovando alcune dolorose risposte alle sue domande, nella conclusione del primo arco narrativo del suo personaggio. Primo arco narrativo di molti, tanti quanti sono i nomi con cui verrà chiamato all’interno del libro: Muad'dib, Usul, Lisan al Gaib, Kwisatz Haderach, Madhi. Un seme, creato con un determinato scopo, certo, ma dalla crescita imprevedibile, che penetra in profondità, si diffonde, si trasforma, e modifica il territorio circostante.

Dune di Frank Herbert, è uno dei romanzi di fantascienza più influenti di sempre, il libro ha dato origine a una saga che ha cambiato profondamente l’immaginario collettivo a partire dalle sue fondamenta, è esso stesso un seme. Lo è nel suo modo di contenere tutta una serie di idee, temi, suggestioni, capaci di sbocciare in luoghi e situazioni sempre diverse, senza però perdere specificità. Perché, questa saga, dietro la sua facciata di epica eroica di tradizione classica, che sembra solo apparentemente seguire il monomito, ovvero il viaggio dell’eroe (di cui, in realtà, Dune rappresenta un’aspra critica), la storia di Paul e dei Fremen, il popolo nativo di Arrakis, è invece un romanzo che a volte sembra un trattato di filosofia, di psicologia, di etica o di religione. Altre acquista connotati politici, parlando di lotta di classe e degli effetti del colonialismo, mettendo in discussione sia le figure messianiche che i leader carismatici. Altre ancora assume la forma di un’eco-narrazione che anticipa alcune delle problematiche che oggi sembrano più urgenti che mai.

Anche la prima parte dell’adattamento di Denis Villeneuve, in cui è Timothée Chalamet ad interpretare Paul Atreides, è un seme. O perlomeno, il primo stadio di un qualcosa che sembra destinato ad acquistare forma. È, però, necessario prima piantarlo per poi poter godere dei suoi frutti, ed è quello che Villeneuve ha provato a fare con il suo Dune, che segue piuttosto fedelmente la storia di Herbert, ma risulta anche intimamente villeneuviano,(scusate l’aggettivazione). È qui che forse c’è un equivoco di molti: il ricercare compiutezza in un’opera che per sua natura rappresenta un inizio. Questa versione di Dune è un tentativo di gettare solide basi per reggere una storia ancora più complessa, non tanto nell’intreccio, quanto nella stessa costruzione del suo stesso mondo. Di fatto, si tratta della prima parte di un dittico, e come tale deve essere considerata.

In molti lo hanno ripetuto così tante volte da farlo divenire un logo comune: Dune è un libro impossibile da trasporre al cinema. Potrebbe essere vero ma solo in parte, nel senso che un adattamento presuppone sempre il dover fare alcune scelte, perché a un cambiamento del mezzo di narrazione deve seguire, necessariamente, un cambiamento della stessa materia narrativa. Sta di fatto che il romanzo di Herbert è così denso, stratificato e colto, da per poter essere raccontato in un altre forma che non sia il libro, figuriamoci quella filmica che ha durata limitata. il libro di Herbert lo si può paragonare a un prisma dalle molte facce, che riflettono la luce in modo diverso a seconda di come le si guarda. Ora immaginate di dover dipingere quel prisma. Prima di tutto è necessario scegliere come orientarlo e farlo colpire dalla luce. È quello che fa Villeneuve, insieme ai co-sceneggiatori Jon Spaihts e Eric Roth, prendendo delle decisioni che possono piacere o meno, ma dimostrando una profonda consapevolezza. Mancano dei personaggi questo è vero e alcuni snodi non sono ancora esplicitati, ma non era difficile aspettarsi qualcosa di diverso da questo. 

Il Dune di Frank Herbert è realmente uno strano oggetto letterario. Ha un approccio molto concreto al mondo che racconta, costruendo nei minimi dettagli interi ecosistemi per soffermarsi poi in maniera particolare a delineare il contesto dal punto di vista politico e socio-economico. C’è una parte del romanzo in cui il Duca Leto (nel film interpretato da Oscar Isaac) discute dei salari da offrire agli estrattori di melange, la sostanza presente solo su Arrakis e che permette i viaggi interstellari, il cui monopolio è detenuto dalla Gilda spaziale. Leto ha, infatti, ricevuto dall'Imperatore Padiscià Shaddam IV, che governa l’Universo, l’ordine di trasferirsi dal suo pianeta natale Caladan ad Arrakis, subentrando ai nemici di sempre, gli Harkonnen, per gestire la raccolta di spezia.

Shai Hulud è il termine usato dai Fremen per indicare i vermi delle sabbia, ossia l'incarnazione fisica della loro unica divinità.

Si tratta di una scena, quella di cui sopra, rievocata nel film di Villeneuve di sfuggita, con una sola linea di dialogo, non particolarmente importante ai fini della trama, eppure per me sufficiente per comprendere il tono dell’adattamento. Una situazione che poco c’entra con una storia nota per le atmosfere lisergiche e un certo gusto per l’eccesso, elementi enfatizzati dai due prodotti culturali più noti legati al libro: il grandioso e folle progetto naufragato di Jodorowsky nel 1975, raccontato in Jodorowsky's Dune, documentario del 2013 di Frank Pavich, e l’affascinante quando confuso disastro di David Lynch con Kyle MacLachlan del 1984 - a cui, nonostante tutto, voglio benissimo, anche solo per aver ispirato l’avventura grafica omonima, quella sì un capolavoro, di Cryo Interactive del 1992.

Dune è anche questo: l’approccio è spesso pragmatico, l'atmosfera più mistica che lisergica, il tono più solenne che eccessivo. Il film di Villeneuve è così, presenta un’austera grandiosità estetica, coerente con la visione d’insieme. La fotografia di Greig Fraser è caratterizzata da toni scuri, metallici e terrosi, mentre nella scenografia ricorrono forme geometriche e massicce, soprattutto negli edifici di Arrakeen, modellati sulle ziqqurat mesopotamiche, o nei fregi dei palazzi che ricordano i bassorilievi neoassiri. Antichità e futuro si incontrano quasi per alludere a un tempo fuori dal tempo, e non si è  fuori strada si parlasse di «tempo del mito». Mentre il vasto deserto, territorio dei Fremen dei giganteschi Shai Hulud, i vermi della sabbia, fa il resto.

Anche se narrativamente sobrio, Dune colpisce per la semplicità con cui racconta gli eventi, senza banalizzare o semplificare una vicenda parecchio strutturata già di per se. Villeneuve fa delle scelte e, per esempio, tutto il contesto religioso (e in particolare il ruolo del Bene Gesserit, ordine religioso matriarcale che muove i destini dell’Impero e che sarà al centro di una serie TV attualmente in pre-produzione), viene relegato un po’ sullo sfondo, presente solo in alcune pennellate. È anche vero che il libro è fatto di parole, pensieri, annotazioni. D’altronde, ogni capitolo del libro è corredato da estratti tratti dai testi storiografici della principessa Irulan, figlia dell’imperatore. Mentre il film di Villeneuve, puntuale nell’esporre l’intreccio, costruisce il suo mondo e delinea i rapporti anche attraverso sogni, allusioni, piccoli dettagli e, soprattutto, sguardi e gesti. Un linguaggio corporeo che va a sostituire il flusso costante di pensieri dei personaggi letterari.

Il Bene Gesserit è la sorellanza che muove i destini dell'Impero, il cui compito è quello di incrociare e conservare le linee genetiche delle casate.

Villeneuve utilizza così le lingue, anche quelle dei gesti, in modo fluido, forse anche più del romanzo, dove l'uso di nomi e termini mutuati dalla lingua araba erano comunque fondamentali nella costruzione culturale di Arrakis. Ma non è la prima volta che il regista dimostra una certa attenzione verso tematiche come il valore fondante del linguaggio nell’identificazione culturale, il suo ruolo nell’intrecciare relazioni e la possibilità di alterare la percezione del mondo. Lo aveva fatto nel suo film più peculiare: Arrival del 2016. Che anche in quel caso si trattava di un testo letterario molto difficile da trasporre. A Villeneuve, del resto, piacciono le sfide e spesso non sembra nemmeno interessato a dare al pubblico quello che vuole o si aspetta.

Riprendendo il discorso sul linguaggio, e in particolare a come nel film è stata resa la famosa Voce, ossia una tecnica Bene Gesserit che influenza il subcoscio di chi l’ascolta attraverso la modulazione del tono, presta il fianco anche a un altro aspetto dell’opera che non lascia indifferenti: suono e colonna sonora contribuiscono in maniera attiva alla definizione del mondo stesso. Il sound designer Theo Green, che aveva già lavorato con Villeneuve in Blade Runner 2049, fa qui un lavoro impressionante nel modulare intensità e volume, giocando con l’assenza di suono in brevi, ma significativi momenti. In questo, lavora in sinergia con Hans Zimmer, che compone una roboante colonna sonora, certamente ingombrante, ma di grande importanza narrativa. Il risultato è una base sonora costante, granulosa e avvolgente su cui si innesta il racconto, e che dà costantemente la sensazione di arrancare e sprofondare nelle sabbie di Arrakis.

Giocando sulla contrapposizione tra i campi lunghi degli sconfinati paesaggi, i primi piani e dei dettagli, la macchina da presa indugia spesso sui volti dei personaggi e in particolare gli occhi. Sono gli occhi blu - per effetto della spezia geriatrica - di Chani (Zendaya) che appare nei sogni di Paul; quelli del popolo di Arrakis che accoglie il giovane duca al suo arrivo sul pianeta al grido di Lisan al-Gaib, «la voce da un altro mondo»; quelli forti, consapevoli ma spaventati di Jessica, mentre cerca di far convivere gli obiettivi del Bene Gesserit con i propri, in un’interpretazione notevolissima di Rebecca Ferguson.

I Fremen sono i misteriosi abitanti di Arrakis. Vivono in insediamenti segreti chiamati sietch.

Timothée Chalamet è un Paul abbastanza coerente con il personaggio del libro, ma forse troppo monocorde. Di certo, non ha avuto la possibilità di emergere completamente. In questa parte della storia, Paul è un ragazzo in balia di forze che hanno segnato il suo destino, alla ricerca di se stesso.

La vera sfida d’altronde, non è cercare il Dune di Frank Herbert in quello di Villeneuve, ma provare a capire cosa il regista stia cercando di dirci attraverso Dune. In questa prima parte di un progetto più articolato, si può certamente intuire il percorso intrapreso da Villeneuve, all’interno dei tanti offerti da Frank Herbert. È un seme, come detto in precedenza, e bisogna capire dove piantarlo e cosa nascerà.

È comunque difficile guardare a un film come il Dune di Denis Villeneuve senza però sentire la voce di tutta la tradizione precedente e senza farsi influenzare dal peso dell’opera originale o dalle visioni dei diversi autori. Dune è, forse esagerando, il Gilgamesh del nostro tempo, o almeno la cosa più simile a un poema mitologico declinato in forma post-moderna. Contiene, come le grandi epopee antiche, molti dei temi della cultura da cui ha preso forma. Ma allo stesso tempo, è uno dei principali modelli per tutte le storie di fantascienza che sono venute dopo. Non solo un libro inadattabile ma il libro che forse più di tutti può ambire allo status di mito, quando si parla di narrazione investita di sacralità e significatività. A livello estetico, il film è eccezionale. Si questa solennità può essere, in un certo senso, interpretata come mancanza di originalità, ma in verità credo che la forza di questo adattamento di Dune sia nelle cose molto più piccole. Proprio nei piccoli dettagli sullo sfondo, nei gesti dei personaggi che hanno tutti, sempre un significato, nonostante esso spesso non sia esplicitato. Nella cura con cui una parola, detta in un determinato modo, alluda invece a un mondo intero. In questa storia, del resto, il world building non rappresenta solamente una premessa ma ne è essenza stessa. Quello che manca in un film che forse sarebbe stato meglio chiamare Dune Parte I è, letteralmente, l’epica. Ma quella verrà dopo, perché in questa fase della storia non era prevista. In questa fase abbiamo il racconto di una crisi, dello smarrimento, di morte e rinascita. L’epica verrà dopo, si spera.

Mark Chadbourn - The Age of Misrule, The Dark Age, and Kingdom of the Serpent Trilogies, which happen to be my fav modern fantasy trilogies, and all are part of a single story.

Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, when writing together - all the Dune prequels and all the other Dune novels written after Frank Herbert died. I am absolute whore for Dune. The original film, however, is an example of Nope.

N. K. Jemisin - The Broken Earth trilogy, The Dreamblood Duology, The Inheritance Trilogy are among my favorite books. I highly recommend these. All her main characters, and most of the characters in her novels, are all POC.

Suzanne Collins - The Hunger Games and Cyber Mage, two YA series I really enjoy. The Hunger Games films are the story the Capital wants you to focus on with its romance. In the books, the romance is just noise in the background.

Pamela Freeman - The Casting trilogy and the followup novel Ember and Ash. I absolutely love these books.

Kate Baker - The House of the Stag, The Bird of the River, and The Anvil of the World. These could be considered a trilogy because it's the same world. The author died before finishing the story, but I think what's written is complete and offers room for a great deal of fanfiction

Some other books I highly recommend:

The Saga of the Seven Suns by Kevin J. Anderson. It's a scifi series that takes place over seven novels and has amazing world building.

The Martian by Andy Weir. The film is outstanding, but the books has soooo much more to offer. Prepare to laugh often. It's not written as a comedy, but it fucking is.

The Tearling Trilogy by Erika Johansen. Another modern fantasy with world building I love. I cried hard when I got to the last book because holy fuck. There's rumor about Netflix making a series of this, but I have a feeling they gonna butcher it.

The Sabriel series by Garth Nix. A fantasy series that mixes tech with magic. It takes place over a couple generations and has, at last count, six books.

American Gods by @neil-gaiman (tagging because I can). The streaming series is a train wreck, but the book is phenomenal. I had a paperback copy and, um, read it to death. Like most of my Dune novels, I've had to replace it with hardcover.

The Xanth series by Piers Anthony. It's a long af fantasy and scifi series with great world building, and a lot of puns. My mom bought me the first book when I was 12/13 because I love puns, and she saw the wisdom of encouraging this. @prime89 you really need to read these books

Il ricercatore ha deciso dunque di saperne di più usando il metodo che un professore di letteratura userebbe per capire se un suo studente ha letto davvero un libro o se bluffa con Wikipedia. Con il suo team ha cominciato a interrogare ChatGpt in modo massivo su una discreta quantità di testi, interrogandolo sulla conoscenza di vari libri e dando un punteggio per ognuno. Più alto era il punteggio, più era probabile che quel libro facesse parte del set di dati del software. Al termine delle sue interrogazioni Bamman ha stilato la lista dei romanzi che ChatGpt conosce meglio e che, molto probabilmente, sono stati dati in pasto al software per sviluppare conoscenze sulla sintassi e per avere informazioni sulla cultura generale e sulla letteratura.

I libri letti da Chat GPT

L'elenco dei 50 romanzi che il team di ricercatori ha scovato - pubblicato su Business Insider - ovviamente una piccola parte dell'immenso database del chatbot - comprende i libri cult della letteratura nerd: Douglas Adams con Guida Galattica per Autostoppisti, Frank Herbert e il suo Dune, George R.R. Martin e The Game of Thrones e Philip. K.. Dick con Ma gli androidi sognano pecore elettriche?. Non mancano anche cenni di letteratura americana come Furore di John Steinbeck o passaggi di letteratura inglese con Il Signore delle Mosche di William Golding.

Con sorpresa il team ha scoperto che i libri con la percentuale di conoscenza più alta da parte di Chat GPT sono libri di fantascienza e fantasy. In cima alla lista ci sono Harry Potter e la pietra filosofale, il primo della saga firmata da J.K. Rowling e 1984 di George Orwell. Al terzo posto c'è La compagnia dell’Anello, capostipite questa volta della saga di J.R.R. Tolkien. Ancora, Fahrenheit 451, Il mondo nuovo ma anche Neuromante di Gibson e Il cacciatore di androidi di Philip K. Dick, capolavori cyberpunk che, ironia della sorte, sono stati tra i primi a parlare dei pericoli intelligenza artificiale. Nella lista dei libri ci sono anche un paio di romanzi della saga di 007 di Ian Fleming, mentre tra i testi che ChatGpt conosce meno figurano Shining e I diari di Bridget Jones.

Nerd amante del fantasy e della fantascienza

Proprio il profilo degli ingegneri informatici che hanno effettivamente programmato il software.

Il team si è sicuramente divertito con un bel gioco letterario, che però nasconde quesiti dal significato sinistro, come osserva Bamman: “Le fonti su cui sono stati addestrati questi modelli di intelligenza artificiale influenzeranno il tipo di modelli stessi e i valori che presentano. Cosa succede quando un bot divora narrativa su tutti i tipi di mondi oscuri e distopici? In che modo questo genere può influenzare il comportamento di questi modelli in modi che non riguardano cose letterarie o narrative? Non abbiamo ancora la risposta a questa domanda”.

Oloïsse (he/him) (born in 1325)

Born a few months prior to the Personal Story, Oloïsse was mentored by Trahearne and taught necromancy. After Claw Island, he was given the title of Commander at the expanse of other Guilds members present (Agni, Nux & Asoka). Oloïsse did a great job tho ... until HoT. After the Scarlet's events, he started to doubt himself, and loosing Trahearne to Mordremoth was the thing that broke him. Kala became Commander at his demand and Oloïsse choose to stay with Caith to watch over Aurene, who ended up choosing him as a champion. During the event of PoF, he was the one killed by Balthazar.

Agni Siggurdottir (she/her) (born in 1301)

After the disappearance of her mother and her father joining the Sons of Svanir, Agni was raised by her maternal uncle Forgal and joined the Vigils because he was her role model. When he died on Claw Island, she spiraled and became enraged with grief. When Zaithan was defeated, she exiled herself to the woods, but her solitude didn't last long, because Eir asked her to watch over her son Braham. Agni has an unlikely friendship with Asoka and Nux that grew during their time in Orr.

Hjalti Siggurdson (he/him) (born in 1306)

5 years younger than Agni, Hjalti is her little brother born from the same awful father. Expected to follow the same path as him, Hjalti was taken by his father for a while before he escaped and ran back to his mother. Knowing he had a sister the whole time, he spent many years looking for her until Icrebrood Saga when she gained the name "Patricide" and became known among Norns for that. She first rejected him but warmed up a bit when she realised that he wasn't giving up despite the agressivity she was showing him.

Kala Brisedune (she/her) (born in 1306)

Cub of high ranking officers of the Blood Legion, Kala was always expected to follow the same path as her parents. While her mother was always on her back and overcritical of her progress in the Fahrar, her father on the other hand didn't want anything to do with her and kept his distance. Being one of the best in her class, she quickly got noticed by Rytlock who took her under his wing. She then formed the Dune warband with her best friend Lucretia. But duty soon knocked on her door and after HoT she left her warband and became Commander, which led the other member of her warband to either die, leave or betray the Legions by joining Bangar and the Frost Legion.

Adria Emhra (she/her) (born in 1298)

Born in Elona to a powerful noble family, Adria was promised to the son of a allied family in Kryta and sent to Divinity's Reach as a teenager to study and marry when she would be of age. She got married indeed to August and together they had a daughter called Nela. At the beggining of Personal Story, August had accepted to take custody of a former sylvari criminal: Blodwyn. Adria fell in love with them the moment they met and divored August. She took his job as a minister too a few months later, because she knew she would be better at it.

Caem Blodwyn (she/they) (born around ~1305 - thirdborn sylvari)

When she was in the Dream, Blodwyn was given a strange and terrifying Wyld Hunt that they didn't understood. Scared from what they had seen in the memories of previous sylvaris, she fled the Pale Tree to find answers and the Nightmares took them. Close for a while to Faolain, Blodwyn became a Countess of the Nightmares and was given her own little court. But at the beggining of Personal Story, they were captured by valiants and jailed in the Grove. Oloïsse pleaded for her to be given a second chance after recognizing each other from the Dream. She was then sent to Kryta under the care of Minister Ainsley, where they met his wife, Adria, the subject of Blodwyn's Wyld Hunt. During the events of HoT, Mordremoth's influence reached Blodwyn and she fled to the Mists so he couldn't reach them. They came back with Faolain ghost attached to her mind.

Lucretia Fièredune (she/her) (born in 1306)

Kala and Lucretia were raised together in the Fahrar and formed the Dune warband together. But Kala left her and the band to become Cammander and her absence left them vulverable. Little by little, members of the warband either left or died and Lucretia grew to resent Kala. Skrittologist Nux (she/her) (born in 1305)

Nux's family was a known one and like all the other before her, she was expected to join the Static College. But after an experiment she was forbidden to continue gone wrong, she caused an explosion that injured and killed several of her colleagues and also took her left arm. She was then banned by the Arcane Council and left Rata Sum to find meaning elsewhere. After taking a job from the Priory, she became interested in Skritt culture and went to live in Skrittsburgh for a year. After publishing her thesis, the Priory recruted her as a Skritt specialist and sent her to Orr as a coordinator between the Pact and the Skritt allies.

Solan Eadra (she/he/they) (born in 1320)

No clear backstory, but they are a Vigil.

Nela Ainsley (she/her) (born in 1317)

Adria and August's daughter. She is a student in Queensdale academy and is a big fan of the Pact and the first Commander, to the point that it led her to become a necromancer just like him and Trahearne.

Asoka Quin (he/him) (born in 1309)

Born from a Canthan maternal family and Krytan parternal side, Asoka was a middle child and the only boy. Having a bad relationship with his parents, he ran away from home at 15 and lived off pickpocketing and scam for a year before being recruted by the Order of Whispers and drafted in Orr as a scout. In comparison to Agni and Nux, he is way more active in the Pact and has been present in the HoT, PoF, IBS and EoD events.

Alto Casseferraille (he/him) (born in 1276)

Lucretia's father and an engineer of the Iron Legion. He is a charr of few words and he mostly enjoy solitude.

Captain Dexx (he/it) (born in 1308)

Dexx always had a rebellious nature and was still pretty young when he left Rata Sum to live a life of Piracy. He became a Captain at 19 and had been thriving on the sea ever since.

Tiarnuin (he/him) (born around ~1305 - thirdborn sylvari)

Member of Countess Blodwyn's Court, Tiarnuin was her jester and personal executioner. When they were captured, Tiarnuin searched everwhere for her, but in vain. He stayed in the Nightmares because he thought it would be more fun than the Dream, going from Court to Court as an entertainer.

Il romanzo "La rifondazione di Dune" ("Chapterhouse Dune") di Frank Herbert è stato pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1985. È il sesto libro della saga di Dune e segue "Gli eretici di Dune". In Italia è stato pubblicato dall'Editrice Nord nel n. 75 di "Cosmo Oro", da Sperling & Kupfer nel n. 6 di "Sperling Serial" e da Fanucci in "Fanucci Narrativa" e ne "Il ciclo di Dune", tutti nella traduzione di Giampaolo Cossato e Sandro Sandrelli.

Le Matres Onorate continuano a conquistare pianeti controllati dalle Bene Gesserit. Lampadas, dove c'era un'importante scuola delal Sorellanza, è caduto e la direttrice Lucilla è riuscita solo a condividere le sue memorie con Rebecca, una Reverenda Madre Selvatica ebrea. Gli ebrei sono riusciti a fuggire sul pianeta Gammu ma devono nascondersi in una non-camera.

Sul pianeta della Casa Capitolare, le Bene Gesserit stanno cercando di replicare il deserto dell'antico Arrakis per far rivivere i grandi vermi. Per cercare di ribaltare le sorti di quella che sembra una guerra ormai persa, è indispensabile far crescere un ghola del bashar Miles Teg ma Duncan Idaho ha le sue idee sul bambino. Duncan è anche preso dalla sua relazione con Murbella, la Matre Onorata catturata che sta per diventare una Reverenda Madre dopo essere stata addestrata come Bene Gesserit.

So, my thoughts on Heretics and Chapterhouse…

Not a good way to end things, but also is.

Part of this experience has been me learning the actual formation of the Dune Saga. I was under the belief that Messiah was a part of the first book that was cut and later extended into it’s own novel. Turns out it and Children were simply based on notes Herbert had when he wrote the original book (as a trilogy in a magazine), as such it and Children weren’t as planned out as I thought. Now, Messiah does feel like an actual extension of the original book, where the messages come to a head giving the book a more overt moral. You know, rather than people taking Dune as a simple heroes journey narrative.

Messiah still took four years to write, while Children took seven years after that. Five years passed and Herbert cranked out God Emperor, which I feel works as a grand finale to what started with Paul. Then Herbert announced he was going to finish the saga with a trilogy, releasing Heretics a scant three years after God Emperor and Chapterhouse the following year. Then Herbert died the year after that, but supposedly he had notes left behind that his son used to make two novels to finish the saga to questionable success.

The fact Herbert talked about making a trilogy and started off by taking a shot at Star Wars, implying it was simply a cheap imitation of Dune that people went gaga over, and Herbert was looking down on those people. I don’t really feel this is a case of a sci-fi writer being upset over the implications of Star Wars and what it did to the genre (there’s even a book on that), but jealous of the other franchise’s success. They even altered his story when the 84 movie was made to have it end with Paul actually being the messiah, rather than him simply manipulating the Freman for revenge, and tried to market it like it was Star Wars.

Now, Star Wars wasn’t telling the same story as Dune, it played the heroes journey and the things Dune was trying to warn people of straight. It also borrows from a lot of stuff, from Asimov’s Foundation series to Kurosawa films. But, that shot Herbert made kept bothering me. It feels like his intended sequel trilogy was meant to show up Star Wars. It made the themes of Dune more overt, spelled out some of the messages, tried to tantalize with what I call “creepy sixties sci-fi writer horniness” (also known as going Heinlein), as well as played up the talks on philosophy and plans.

It’s a weird case that I like the characters, especially in Heretics, but it feels like it’s faux-deep. When you’re talking about women sexually dominating men to rule the galaxy, or how torture turns Miles Teg into the fucking Flash, it kinda messes with the stuff on needing to terraform Chapterhouse into a new Arrakis. Dune had always been about how the universe is too vast to control and how just a little misstep can throw plans into dissarray, but this stuff felt more like Herbert was pulling it out of his butt (again, we have a character become the Flash). The series ends with the threat we’ve been dealing with having their victory (using an unforeseen, bloodless way of killing that’s never explained) turned on them due to ultimately a chance encounter with one of their members turning into something more, but there’s a bigger threat out there implied to be autonomous face dancers. But we also get the DNA of the classic Dune characters waved in front of our faces to bring them back as gholas.

It just feels like Dune is going in circles.

I can accept this point as the end, as it leaves everything up to possibilities with the only thing we know for certain is that mankind will still exist in 5000 years, but really it should have ended with God Emperor. That was the perfect ending to the saga, not whatever notes Herbert left behind that were supposed to end with a transition to democracy (after Chapterhouse talked at length how democracy can be subverted)

Nel trailer dell'episodio 8 di House of the Dragon, è stato anche chiarito che Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine) non sarà in grado di governare Westeros per qualche tempo a causa di problemi di salute. Il Trono di Spade sarà conquistato da Otto Hightower (Rhys Ivans), che gestirà gli affari del regno mentre Viserys è via.

Apparentemente Vhagar dà anche ad Aemond una spinta alla fiducia o, a seconda di come la guardi, una lobotomia. L'ex addomesticato Targaryen è ora uno stronzo di altissimo rango, unendosi al fratello maggiore Aegon nel pantheon di Terrible TV Tots. Il furore di Baela e Rhaena per Vhagar è giustificato: hanno appena perso la madre e ora questo pezzo di lei volerà via con un piccolo principino viziato che non conoscono particolarmente bene. Inoltre, c'è il fatto aggiuntivo dello stato senza drago di Rhaena; potrebbe aver creduto che Vhagar le sarebbe passato naturalmente. E la colluttazione trasformata in squarcio nelle viscere di High Tide è decisamente istigata da Aemond, nonostante sia in inferiorità numerica e non abbia un'arma. Jace potrebbe tirare fuori un coltello, ma l'espressione sul viso di Aemond mentre tiene quella roccia sopra la testa di Luke ha una strana somiglianza con quella sul viso di suo zio Daemon quando ha colpito la testa di Rhea. È un'espressione di trionfo, come se dovesse infliggere crudeltà a qualcun altro per assicurarsi il suo nuovo senso di sé.

La coreografia qui è impeccabile, con le vibrazioni di Lord of the Flies che rimbalzano da ogni direzione e una chiara comprensione di come i bambini graffiano e prendono a pugni. La scena è anche uno specchio intelligente di come gli adulti gestiscono le stesse accuse e offese.

Come suo figlio, Alicent è cresciuta una spina dorsale delle dimensioni di quella di Vhagar. Quando Viserys insiste affinché Rhaenyra ripeta il "vile insulto" che Aemond ha scagliato contro suo figlio, Alicent presume che metterà Rhaenyra alle strette, che una volta che la principessa avrà detto ad alta voce che il lignaggio dei suoi figli è stato messo in dubbio, Viserys dovrà fare i conti pubblicamente con questo crisi di legittimità. Ma il re ora non è altro che una pedina; Alicent lo spinge in una direzione, e poi Rhaenyra lo respinge di nuovo. La sua soluzione è chiedere a tutti loro di stringere la mano, fare pace, lasciare che il passato sia passato, come se l'apice del potere terreno non fosse il premio in gioco in questa lotta. Rhaenyra può regolare le sue vele di conseguenza; può avere il sangue del drago, ma può rinfrescarsi. Alicent ha dieci anni di rabbia nel suonare il secondo violino immagazzinato dentro di lei, e sarà dannata se in questa lotta non avrà almeno la parità - il che significa, ehm, l'occhio di un bambino.

E oh come vola a Rhaenyra! Dopo la pudica, quasi spettrale Alicent che gli showrunner hanno dato a Emily Carey per interpretare, è magnifico vedere Olivia Cooke aprire la bocca e scatenare una tempesta. Per un breve momento la telecamera ingrandisce il pugnale d'acciaio di Valyria che ha strappato dalla cintura di suo marito, lo stesso che Viserys ha mostrato a Rhaenyra e usato per imprimerle il requisito che solo i Targaryen detengano il trono, perché solo loro possono produrre il principe Quello era promesso. Alicent ignora le implicazioni più ampie, ma non è difficile tracciare un collegamento tra lo sguardo di Rhaenyra sul pugnale e la sua proposta frettolosa a Daemon. Per i Targaryen solo il sangue puro è sangue reale e Daemon non solo può aiutarla a proteggere la sua successione, ma anche a mantenere pulita la dinastia della sua famiglia.

Dopotutto, legano letteralmente il loro sangue. La cerimonia del matrimonio dei Targaryen - inserita in questo episodio, a suo detrimento - richiede ferite multiple e scambi saguinali. La saga di Daemon-Rhaenyra-Voleranno-o-non-vogliono volge al termine, con la più delicata delle scene di sesso tra le dune e la più sanguinosa delle cerimonie sulle rocce. Ma il vero brivido della loro unione è come ce l'hanno fatta, e la vera opportunità persa dell'episodio è la rapidità con cui rivelano la svolta.

Immagina se non avessimo saputo che il corpo carbonizzato nel camino non era Laenor, ma il tizio senza pretese che trotterellava giù per le scale a High Tide a cui era storto il collo. Immagina se non avessimo visto Laenor e Qarl remare verso Essos, dove vivranno felici dell'oro di Daemon. Immagina se House of the Dragon rallentasse, solo un po', e ci lasciasse vivere nell'incertezza.
