We're doing a new kind of invertebrate sampling at work. We sink these cinderblocks about a meter down and come pick them up in 6 weeks. Invertebrates will hide between the cardboard and we pick them out to id them.

sane people so afraid of sh they cant do any meaningful research on it

#i think often of this persons phd #they were studying if sh was an addiction (something people should research!!)#but their method was so flawed #the sample was people who self harmed like 3 times in a 3 months or some shit (i dont remember exactly but the point is it was very #infrequently) and like if you were doing a stody on if alcohol was addictive you would not have your sample be people who drank 3 times or #more in the last 3 months #thats just normal alcohol consumption #but sh is seen as such an abnormal behaviour doing it occasionally is seen as like some crazy shit #like no ofc they didn't show signs of addiction. they dont sh that often #entirely fucking pointless

via an online survey, there were a total of 996 responses.

of the 996 participants, 787 identified as transmasculine, and only 209 identified as transfeminine.

i want to note that 810 participants identified themselves as white.

i also want to note that this is a journal for Obstetrics & Gynecology

#im not tryin to get into discourse but dont take scientific papers at face value #look at the sample size #look at the numbers #look at the methods #when the overwhelming majority of your participants are transmasc your data is obviously going to skew in favor of transmascs

i totally understand the preference for the sound of concatenative vocal synths vs deep learning based ones (dl i find is often a lot weaker than concatenative, even in voicebanks meant for powerful singing. although they can also be more tonally expressive in ways concatenative struggles with. but of course sometimes you just want the metallic sound which is easier to get concatenatively compared to dl's more autotune-y noise) BUT i do often see people say its because theyre worried about more same-y sounding tuning from the auto pitch creation functions which i get but also it does make me giggle a little because have you forgotten the endless plug-and-play war going on from the past 20 years. have you forgotten the millions of untuned covers uploaded every day since the dawn of vocal synthesis. have you forgotten the autopitchwriter debate. the more things change the more things stay the same <3

#naw but for real i get it. i like both but i understand preferring one or the other #although i will say. i dont really think plug and play is that big of a deal. we're mostly doing this for fun anyway #plus i think mixing is half the battle. not everything is about the pitchbending #i will also say tho im not a fan of untuned sample based vocaloid. i dont mind auto tuned vocaloid6 ai #or cevio or voisona or synthv honestly. all those autopitched sound like. kinda off key but fine #but untuned vocaloid 3-5.... not personally into that #i do like untuned vocaloid1 and 2 tho. especially 1 #AND IM GONNA BE HONEST.... i think an untuned utau cover can sound great LOL #i think its because of utau's interesting and funky resampling methods #and how you can use different ones and mess with that. makes it sound oddly expressive even without pitchbends #but yeah i dunno. i dont think plug and play covers are the devil or anything #i dont even think untuned or autotuned originals are bad. when its a niche and largely hobbyist circle like this #i dont think its that big a deal LOL and if someones plugging in a pretuned file i also dont mind #as long as they specify the tuner or something. its chill to me. sometimes u just wanna hear a robot sing #you dont care about the details <3 <3 <3

Sitting in the break room trying to tamp down my frustration because I have a meeting with my boss in forty minutes over a technical problem I still have not solved. I feel like I'm trying to fight physics, and everyone knows physics always wins. I have to calm down so I won't yell at a syringe full of tiny air bubbles in front of my boss.

I saw, thank you for sending! They got a super wide reach on twitter, which is cool! From an accuracy perspective, I couldnt help but notice a lot of flaws in the framing of the results and some of the choices for both the collection and how to represent the data. Not trying to be a hater! they made it clear in their intro slide that it was just for fun, and I do think it’s a rly cool ambitious project. But I also think that data literacy is an important skill 🤷‍♀️

I’m still interested in trying to accomplish the more cross-platform census of yore at some point, but another time!

I reworded this like 15 times to try and not sound like a dick #I might still sound like a dick. i wasn’t gonna bring it up and then I considered not responding to this but #I think I feel strongly about this as an essential skill and when you dress something up in scientific clothes I think we owe it to #the creator and to ourselves and to society to look carefully and be critical before taking any conclusions from it #I just hope people don’t take pie charts and graphs as gospel without looking at the context and the result numbers and the phrasing of the #question and the titling of the results and the methods of visualization and the sample etc etc
