Who's sanctuary?? 👀👀👀
ok sanctuary is a character that i made back when i was working out how both the cycle works and how sundogs/mooncats work, but since ive changed a LOT of stuff since then i need to change their character a lot too.
back when i had way less developed, i had the main difference between sundogs and mooncats (other than their alignment) be that sundogs just kind of started out like that, while mooncats acted more like saithood, where someone who died doing or being involved in something significant would be resurrected as a Mooncat with a relevant aspect.
So then Sanctuary was going to start out as a mortal (with a different, less obvious name). Sanctuary and Brutus would both be raised in the same temple/orphanage/refuge and be pretty close friends. There would be some natural disaster where the building ultimately collapses, Sanctuary and Brutus both being mortally wounded (Sanctuary having been attempting to clear as many people out of the building as possible, and being in the building at the moment it completely collapsed specifically because Brutus was still stuck inside.)
As Brutus begins to die, that's when Novice shows up, and is like. Hey i can't make you alive again but i can make you Not Dead so you can try to keep your friend from dying. And Brutus agrees and becomes a demon. Brutus tries to go over to rescue Sanctuary, but is IMMEDIATELY stopped by Judge who is like. yo wtf why are you not dead. because apparently sanctuary dying while unsuccessfully trying to save Brutus qualified them as a Mooncat. And because of Judge's interference Brutus doesnt manage to stop this from happening and now Sanctuary is a mooncat and Brutus is a demon and everything is fucked up forever
but now that ive changed up how spirits and souls and the cycle work I need to fiddle with that for a while. I still like the idea of Sanctuary being an old friend of Brutus who has her own responsibilities and power now, so i thiiiiink i might make it less cut and dry "mooncats are resurrected people" and more like. in order for mooncats OR suncats are created, it takes some of the soulstuff out of the cycle to make a New Guy, which tends to happen more easily around destruction (hence why sundogs popped up in masse after the whole Noxa Krav thing). in this particular case the universe just kind of grabbed whatever spirit junk was the closest and cobbled together someone new, and TECHNICALLY brutus was also supposed to be lumped into post-Mooncat Sanctuary.
instead of being like "oh shit i gotta save my friend" brutus is just like. EXTREMELY desperately trying to just Not Be Dead, which anchors his soul for long enough that Novice notices and is like. ok i can make you not dead.
so now its more like... brutus escaping the cycle in a way they werent supposed to. like their spirit was going to break out of the recycling loop but the way brutus did it is Breaking The Rules, hence drawing the ire of Judge, instead of it being accidentally interfering with Sanctuary becoming a saint. In this case, there's no risk to the actual formation of sanctuary; if brutus's friend had survived, the universe wouldve just. grabbed a different soul to lump in there. its an act of defiance that means nothing to the universe but EVERYTHING to brutus and judge is still fucking pissed about it just because it's technically not supposed to happen

i'm so sick of people who use the fact that mabel is very much like bill (yes, true!) and that bill even likes mabel (again, yes, true!) and understands her in some ways (again yes!!! true!!!!!!!!!! what was the bubble but a party that never ends with a host that never dies?) and then twist it to fuel their mabel hate. like for one, every pines family member has some deep commonalities with bill because he's an effective villain and plays off the heroes of the story so well! but ALSO because it completely disregards how their core philosophies about the world and people around them differ and it bums me out
i have said this before, exactly like this, and i will say it again. the main difference between bill and mabel is that bill finds the universe and the people in it constricting and dull and frustrating while mabel sees the beauty in dull people and things and sees them as full of potential. bill sees something boring, he destroys it, mabel sees something boring, she gets out her glitter glue. mabel is so filled to the brim with love and affection for others and such a wild desire to make everyone, including herself, happy at all times, and bill is trying so hard to be happy that he deliberately hurts people, ruins his own life, ruins the lives of everyone around him and then doesn't understand why he's so miserable. like these two are fascinating because they are both remarkably similar and WILDLY different and, most importantly, they are interesting to look at as foils because mabel is a good person

Sole Survivor Headcanon
Kind of OC based but it's also vague (Although Minutemen leaning) so like. If your Sole wasn't a soldier or lawyer. Or anything. Just a skill-less bastard. You might like this. Enjoy.
Sole being trusted by so many factions just for breathing is so funny actually. Like they deadass crawl out of a cave, freshly traumatised, and told they're a General? Because they helped someone? Cool, yeah, sure, uh-huh. That's a great amount of pressure to handle on top of their circumstances.
I like to think that everyone also assumes they're insanely clever. It's not that Sole isn't, per se, but everyone treats them like a genius. A prodigy. People have told Sole they understand why Preston trusted them so much because the Commonwealth 'needs their level of knowledge and intelligence to get better'. To which Sole is always bewildered, because their 'extensive level of knowledge' is just. High school level. Basic science lessons.
They know about evolution and stem cells and stuff. They know how disease and antibodies work. They're praised for changing people's opinions on vaccination when, with the help of Curie, they start a campaign to bring back vaccines. Their goal was to fight the viruses that had been brought back from near extinction from 200+ years of no healthcare system, no scientists and doctors to cure them. A tilt back in the direction of accessible Pre-War healthcare.
Sole knows history. They know what to watch out for, how to spot tension between factions. They know how to avoid more war, lessons learned from textbooks and late nights with post-it notes. They know how to piece together a scale and pin point the tipping point to stop it before shit goes down because they did a project about it on a WW1 assignment. The Great War. The irony is not lost on Sole when they contemplate that name for too long.
They're decent at Maths. Decent enough to make sure the caps and donations to the Minutemen are being put to good use. To make sure the book keeping is up to code and every cap is accounted for, and what it should be put towards. Like trying to bring back vaccines from 200 years ago. Negotiating with Vault 81 to let Curie use the old lab there goes way more smoothly when they've got the caps to make a worthy case for the cause.
Sole knows why people assume their mind is unmatched, though. In a way it is, sort of, they suppose. Since education is rare in the Post-War world, and even then it's not at the level it was Pre-War, Sole just seems smart. Everyone thinks they are.
Sole never knows how to handle it.
Are they complicit for letting people believe they're a genius? Should they keep up the charade so people listen to them? The thought keeps them up at night. Preston laughs at them for it.
MacCready reminds them of the many times they looked like a dumbass in every other circumstance where they lacked knowledge. 210 years of missing out on General Wolrd Stuff will do that to ya. It's not necessarily their fault, but he still likes to drag them for the time they got food poisoning because they didn't realise some of the new plants had to be cooked before consumption.
Every time someone acts in awe of Sole's intelligence, MacCready snickers because he was there in the early days. Sole had hired him to watch their back. Soon enough he became their mentor on how to shoot a gun properly. How to maintain it. What to eat, what not to eat, what to definetly not eat. How to make sure mole rat meat is 100% cooked. How to safely remove as much radiation as possible from water and food when you have only basic supplies. He would never think Sole is stupid. They know a lot compared to most people, but learning how to survive and knowing how to count are very different types of knowledge. No, he'd never think they're stupid. But he definetly humbles them, which Sole is actually happy about. He still affectionately calls them an idiot and reminds them of the time they tripped over their own laces, alerting the radstag they were hunting of their presence. And the food poisoning thing. And the incident with the bucket. And when they almost touched a deadly plant because they thought it would look nice in a vase they found.
Thing is, Preston taught them basics of how to shoot and fight before they left Sanctuary. MacCready picked up the workload when he met Sole and realised they'd likely get them both killed if he didn't. Cait showed them hand to hand combat and lockpicking. Everyone at some point taught Sole something. So Sole goes red from embarrassment when being complimented on their mind, because they know they're gonna get an earful from their friends later. Affectionately bullied. You know Deacon has some blackmail level information from the months he followed them. They all sit at Sole's kitchen counter and share stories of Sole's embarrassing misadventures over breakfast. That's just what a family does.

I don't think grinding for currency is a good way to keep people engaged with Sky; on one hand TGC acknowledges that candle running has become a chore, but on the other, the ways they said they thought about to keep players active for at least half or more of an event revolves around grinding (either with the high prices or by adding yet another currency).
Also I can't put it into words well without sounding like I'm reaching but is anyone else confused by how AFK farmers were talked about ? Like I get the frustration because I've been in a server where everyone was asleep while trying to open doors, but I don't think "exploits" are the root of the problem.
Which leads me into my next comment, there's this push to make us social that quickly becomes suffocating when you're more introverted and don't always have the social batteries for that. Sky is a social game so I find the expectation that I should be helpful and courteous to strangers reasonable, but expecting and forcing players to constantly interact with eachother becomes exhausting, especially since you can't properly curate your experience (the block system is wack and you can't stop someone from teleporting to your server once you became friends) so it feels overwhelming, especially with people that get clingy that may range from young children that don't mean to be like that (which I can tolerate) to folks that talked to you once, so now you're their therapist/partner... And I find it also affects closer bonds too ? There's this general unease around enforcing boundaries, I have to reassure new friends that they can tell me they're busy or can't hang out for any other reason, since I sometimes teleport to them just out of curiosity to see what they're doing.
It's just my two cents of course, but I think that there should be proper ways to enforce boundaries before players are pushed to talk to eachother if you want a majority of them to happily do so.

@just-a-lamp original post was getting long so NEW POST (picking up from here)
HRRMMMMMM au names... "boats and stars" sounds like a good placeholder for now unless smth else comes up (the song is boats and birds but yknow) arguably "boats and bats" could be used too
quick switch focus to heart hotel and other characters! (uh this got. longer than i was expecting so CUT)
vanitas working at the sanctuary just makes me laugh because any time riku gets swarmed by the bats he makes it a point to record it to send to roxas. vani promised lil bro that hed send anything like that to him cause shits funny as hell
vani rescued a bat from drowning (coughfloodcough) and its the one bat that Does Not want anything to do with riku. hes a nippy bastard and Will Bite, vani is the only exception and hes the only one who can handle him and not get bit
ventus being an announcer is genius i love it, he hypes sora up so much for his shows and they play off each other So Well! i can see him being like... head waiter? idk if manager would be the right word here
and by extension xion would probably be a mermaid too! i can see her making necklaces/bracelets/etc out of shells around the aquarium and they sell them at the gift shop, though she def gives some directly to some kids during her shows
roxas is a cook and he makes it clear he doesnt wanna deal with The Public™️ as i like to call it because thats WAY too much of a fuckin headache he doesnt know how ventus does it
considering the fact that four of the five of them work at this place, it probably ran in the family and vanitas was the only one like "nah fuck that i wanna do smth different" but sometimes he'll show up for halloween events

Hey Knight I just had a great idea before I fell asleep
Another champion villain AU, but the Champions are all working for their regions Villain teams
Diantha working for Team Flare because she agrees that only the “worthy” people should live, people who do good for the world
Iris working for Team Plasma, either from the beginning or when they reestablished themselves in BW2. Idk why she’d join but she knows how to bring the power out of dragon Pokémon and how to control them, and one of Plamas goal is to capture the three dragons
Cynthia working for Team Galatic just for her own curiosity. She wants to see how far Cyrus is able to go, and maybe even gain control of the legendaries herself. Maybe the story of Volo has been passed down in her family and she wants to see if she’s able to complete what Volo wasn’t able to
And the other Champions joining their own villain teams, idk what Geeta would do considering there isn’t really a villain team, it’s just a group of kids who were bullied. Maybe she helped Turo and Sada with their research but she took it to far and brought dangerous Pokémon to the present time. Letting the Koridon/Miradon kill the professors so that she could take their research for herself
Ohhhh👀👀👀
Okay but fr Cynthia and Leon would probs double cross Cyrus and Rose hahaha
Ofc, Cynthia is a given considering her track record in our villain au hahah but that is interesting tho, if the story of Volo got passed down in their family, and they treat it like some cautionary tale, a warning yknow, Volo was a name in their family that none should ever speak out loud. But Cynthia, ever the curious child, wanted to know more. And learn she did. Found out what he really did, what he wanted to achieve, and he was close in accomplishing his goals. Yet he failed. Cynthia doesn't do failure, she's great w a lot of things, she prides herself w that, a lot of people look up to her. But she has to admit, it's rather boring lately, and then the story of Volo came across her mind again, and she wondered if she could do what he wanted to do. And she won't fail ofc.
She let Cyrus do all the work, tho she gave him what he needed to know abt the legendary Pokémon. They both knew that Cynthia shouldn't really ruin her image just yet, their plan would fail. So yeah the events of DPPt, up to the point of Giratina showing up. And everyone was at the edge yknow, they're waiting what would happen, then Cynthia steps in, catching Giratina's attention. Gira knew Cynthia was familiar, a spitting image of him, and there's a tug within him, in his already tainted heart, to bow his head, to submit to her commands.
Cynthia looked at Cyrus. The man was waiting for her to finalize their plan, everything was already in order, they have hold of the Lake Trio and even the Creation Trio. Cynthia smiled at him, but there was smth abt it that Cyrus did not like.
"a world devoid of spirit.. that sounds boring, don't you think?"
"what are you planning, Cynthia."
"well, a world without spirit, no one would have the energy to make ice cream, Cy. That's not the ideal world for me."
"what would be the ideal world for you then?"
Chuckling to herself, she was quite curious just how much Giratina would actually listen to her, without uttering a single command. She smiled at him, smiled at her childhood friend, oh, she will miss him, maybe, who knows. Then she smiled, "this." She snapped her fingers, and quicker than the light itself, one of Giratina's tendrils impaled Cyrus straight through his chest, killing him instantly. A few of the grunts screamed, the admins stood there, watching Cynthia in horror. Dialga and Palkia were struggling even more beneath the chains, how pitiful, but she can help them. As long as they'd follow her every word. She then turns to the admins, terrified, hands on the red capsules on their belts, but Cynthia laughs, "do you think that'd be wise?" They raised their hand in quiet surrender. This was easy. She never got how Volo failed.
Then w Leon, idk since I did have this au abt Sonia back then, it does have the same energy, anyways hahaha yeah yknow peeps looked down on Sonia, Leon did not like that. No one believes her abt Eternatus, abt how it was the (cause) of the Darkest Day, and he heard rumours how she was just trying so hard to impress people since she's filling in Prof Magnolia's shoes. Then he hears abt Rose and like all that energy for DMax or smth yeah, and ofc Leon believed Sonia, and he's gonna help her prove her theories are actually true. So he played along Rose's game. Let him summon Eternatus, and both of them are standing before it, w Rose letting Leon capture the legendary pkmn. Rose praised him for his good work as usual, but just as he was abt take the Master Ball from Leon, the champion merely looked at him, smiling, "thanks for your help, Chairman. But.. Sonia needs this more than you."
And before Rose could react, Leon's Charizard and Haxorus attacked him, feasting over his body. Leon just watched, uninterested abt the death of the man who helped him rise to fame. Instead he looked at the master ball in his hand, smiling to himself, "Sonia is so gonna love this!" Pls ur honour do you see my vision in them becoming villains together ik I said Leon is in a polycule but I'm also still fucking trash for lionheartshipping let me have this one small thing ncmxnx hahaha
Geeta tho like imagine tho after Sada and Turo's death, she took in Arven, telling the others that it's the least she could do as she was the one who was w Sada and Turo last, it's their final wish. Ofc it wasn't, but they all got convinced by it. And just cndmdn yo Geeta feeding Arven lies abt his parents. How they were the ones to bring dangerous Pokémon in their world, how they took it too far, how they took her studies abt it. And ofc, Arven believed all of it, he was so young, and his parents were always so focused on their studies more than him, but miss Geeta was w him now, and she's so much better, she gives him attention, she's always there for him. His parents didn't even listen to Geeta to stop, and it shows how they really didn't care abt him at all. Imagine how his encounter w his AI parents would be tho, if they actually tell the truth of what happened. Arven couldn't catch a break man bcmdnd hahaha

You got to meet a literal living legend, and all you can talk about is how your fish tried to eat his hat? Sir Drake's visit was wasted on you.
I mean, it's not like I tried to eat his hat. I think he'd be a lot less nice to me about it than he was to Sharkie.

Sometimes I'm writing something and it's just flowing out, it's fantastic, but I'm not super paying attention to what I'm writing so much as it feels right in the moment. Hey Day, have you ever met a winged Dream in your travels? (((OOC: Also, how do I get into the Dreblr discord? Do I need to know the password?)))
Day blinks once, twice, and then looks down at his two youngest sons from his seat in the library.
Perce and his best friends are sprawled haphazardly across various seats, the floor, and each other in the den of the main house.
There's a lot of chaotic shouting, shoving, and kicking as the five of them fight to reign supreme in some sort of racing game. That's about as much as he's gathered so far; Day would be hard pressed to give any further details.
So sue him--he's just not all that into video games. Something about the repetitive loops of most of them makes the hair on the back of the immortal’s neck stand on end.
Between that and his preference towards the end result of his labor being something tangible, they just don't hold much appeal for him.
Usually, Perce and his friends would be in the second floor of Perce’s rooms for something like this.
However, due to a devastating combination of puppy dog eyes and losing a bet, Lee is being included in the game.
…And, based on the shouts of denial and accusations of cheating, he also seems to be winning.
Day has been keeping an ear out in case he might need to intervene, but is more focused on transcribing something from his com onto a set of parchment. His handwriting is surprisingly neat, given his lack of…basically any formal education.
“I’m guessing you mean aside from Perce and Lee..” He sounds a little amused, thankfully, instead of interpreting it as a slight against his sons.
He sets his pen down and takes the chance to stretch both his wings and arms out.
“We’ve met a few, yes. Some we had to fight, some were rescued, and some were entirely fine where they were. Before we step through, we have no idea how good or bad things will be.”
He blinks again at the second question. “Uh…I don’t really think what happened to me counts as reincarnation. No idea what you would call it, but…probably not that.”
Day pauses, and then amends, “Okay, well, I probably did technically die, but I woke up in the SMPza as an adult. I wasn’t ever a kid there. I feel like that’s a big part of reincarnation– the actually…being born part.”
And thank Prime for that small mercy. It had been bad enough that he had to get used to a body that was normal. Trying to deal with the extra hurdles of being a child or having parents might have shattered the fragile remnants of his sanity beyond any hope of repair.
The immortal rolls his shoulders to work out more of the tension in them.
“We’ve met a few. They’re not very common.”
The ones they have met…the person whose role they had gotten are wide and varied; Puffy, Wilbur, one or two other Phils, but the most common is, by and far, Tommy.
And in such worlds, it’s become nearly a guarantee that Dream needs to be rescued.
Day’s mind goes back a few years to the first such instance of that. A sterile room, faded green eyes that had lost hope, a machine that felt wrong, and scars.
Every inch of skin from the neck down was covered in runes and circuit lines, each done with excruciating precision.
None of them had been sure if he would be able to function in the server, not with how terrified he had been of even the slightest hint of any of the Bench Trio.
But, surprisingly, he seems to have found a space within the Swords and Shields. Not just that; he’s good friends with at least two Tommys.
He had been skittish enough around Theo that said eldest sibling had switched rooms with Perce for a few weeks. But, now, he’s someone who clearly is at ease with the admittedly boisterous Daz and Aster, who can be intimidating at the best of times.
Raine has come a long way from the terrified kid who seemed resigned to his own death.
