The Bridge
A little SanSan drabble inspired by Dolly Parton's "The Bridge"
I.
“You won’t tell my father,” Sansa says gently.
Sandor isn’t sure if it’s a question or a command. It has the texture of both and he can’t say how she intended to weave her words. She knows him well enough to know he’ll keep her secrets. He always has and he’s waited so long for her to ask him why.
The moonlight silvers her cheek and collects like a pool in her lap where she wrings her white lace gloves. She’s just had her eighteenth birthday. When he looks at her, he sees a woman where there once was a child. Her father, Sandor’s boss and the chief of police, would argue otherwise and had when Robert Baratheon’s boy turned his sights on Sansa. In the eyes of her father, she would always be too young for love.
Sandor doesn’t answer her. He taps the filter of his cigarette against the steering wheel and rolls down the window. Just ahead of them, beneath the tall stone bridge, the river water rushes along the rocky banks. Powerful and alluring, it’s always in turmoil.
“Joff intends to marry me,” Sansa tells him in one breathless go and lifts her right hand. “Look here.”
The ring is small and imperfect and on the wrong hand. Sandor doesn’t have the heart to tell her that he can peel back the veneer and see broken promises ahead. Her eyes drift about his face as she sees him truly for the first time. He doesn’t imagine it’s because there’s anything worth finding in the ruined flesh that used to frighten her. She wants his approval, to know that even the most hardened of hearts believes in fairytales.
Her full lips are still swollen from kisses and the edges of her lipstick smear outside the lines of her perfect mouth. She too is ruined and, dressed in such imperfection, has never looked so beautiful.
Sandor’s midnight patrols always end here at the bridge and tonight he recognized the taillights of Joffrey’s Bel Air glowing like demon eyes in the dark. He knew what he was going to find and still rapped at the fogged-up glass. Joffrey hadn’t the decency to drive her home, so she sat now in Sandor’s police cruiser not quite crushed but love-battered enough that every now and then she looks out the window at the trees dipping to meet the pristine waters below. She hides her pain well, even from him.
“I ain’t judging you, Miss Stark,” Sandor says and takes a drag off his cigarette.
It’s a lie and the sadness in her smile tells him she knows. She’s ashamed not for what she’s done but who she’s done it with. She should know better than to give her heart to a boy like that and the dream disintegrates in real time now. Sandor watches her knuckles turn white and the gloves twist tighter in her hands. He shifts the car into drive and navigates across the single-lane bridge.
“Next time, pick a better place to park,” he advises and keeps his eyes ahead. Painful memories are etched in the bridge’s stone barrier. If he looks, he’s lost. “The bridge is unforgiving,” he adds and leaves it at that.
He’s not looking for pity, but Sansa hangs her head and a fall of red hair frames her pretty face. He can’t untangle his growing affection for her from the unrelenting loneliness that’s eating him alive. He needs a median to separate the two. With each encounter, though, the paths overlap and switchback. And so, despite his best efforts, he’s lost and reeling too.
“I don’t know that I ever offered my condolences. I’m so sorry for your loss, Officer Clegane. She was so young.”
Sandor never knows what to do with the sentiment. He stuffs it in that cavern she left behind and hopes one day, with enough apologies, he’ll be whole again. His gaze flicks to the rearview mirror and the reflection there of the bridge where one love was lost and another just began.
“That was years ago,” he says and catches Sansa staring at his ring finger, the right one, the one that means something. Only recently did he discover the courage to let it go vacant. “I carry on,” he adds and means it too.
II.
Sansa stands at the edge of the bridge and stares down into the waters below. The wind has made a mess of her hair and her eyes are red from crying. Sandor’s driven across the bridge countless times since the accident but hasn’t stood here since that night. The ground feels unforgiving beneath his feet.
“Are you alright?” he asks as he approaches. The golden hour paints her face in rosy hues that suit her well.
“He’s…”
It’s all she can get out. She chokes on the rest and he swears he can hear her heart shattering in her chest and feel the heat radiating off her body. Her skin is splotchy and her breaths tattered.
“I know. I heard. I saw.”
Church bells filled the afternoon with merry song and pink rose petals showered the steps. Joffrey married the Tyrell girl. “A good match,” Ned Stark said and Sandor understood then the man knew nothing about his daughter. Sandor rushed to the bridge where he knew he’d find her.
“He swore he’d do the honorable thing.” Sansa instinctively cradles her belly and glances at the spot where Joffrey parked his car just a few months ago. “He promised me.”
She stares up at Sandor pleadingly and he doesn’t know for what. In another month, he won’t be able to keep her secret and neither will she. She needs him but doesn’t know how to ask and he doesn’t know for what. Sandor shoves his hands in his pockets and shifts closer to her. The breeze is fragranced with her jasmine perfume.
“I know it’s hard to believe now when you’re mired in heartache, but one day you’ll find a man who loves you right.” Sandor motions to her belly. “Both of you.”
He’s opened a fresh wound of doubt in her and she cries again, maybe for the fairytales she no longer believes in. Sandor realizes she needs him to renew her faith.
She wipes her nose with the back of her hand and, like him, tries not to look at the spot where the accident happened. It’s easy to find if you know what you’re looking for; shattered stones and a bit of blue paint from where the car collided.
“Your wife was lucky,” Sansa says with a smile and means it. Even in heartbreak, she’s sweet to him. She always has been, even when she couldn’t look him in the eye.
“So was I. And so was he.” Sandor’s heart thrums in his chest. He places his hand on top of hers. The ring, small and imperfect, isn’t there any longer. “Any man would be lucky to have you.”
“Could you?” Sansa asks but trains her eyes on their hands joined together.
“Could I what?”
“Love me.”
Sandor turns to her and wipes away the hair that’s stuck to her tear-stained cheeks. He cradles her face in his hands.
“What do you think?”
“I think you already do.”
“I think I do too,” he says and softly places his lips to hers in their first kiss.
III.
“What the hell were you thinking?”
The water is cold, deceptively so, icy even in early summer. It rushes around him, battering his knees that are already shaky and weak. Sandor’s shoes fill with water and small pebbles and slip against the slick rock underneath. His fingers are numb as he unhooks his utility belt and surrenders it to the river. It sinks with the weight of his gun. Sandor dunks beneath the water and swims to her.
He’s too bulky and the current too strong. He forces himself forward until his arms burn and his boots come loose. She’s pushed up against a rock, her pale arm clinging to it, but her face is white.
Why? Why?
He means to ask her, to scream at her once she’s safe. She left her shoes and her purse on the bridge. Surely, she only meant to swim. She’s a fool. A beautiful fool. He was ready to love her. Why wasn’t that enough?
He reaches the rock. She’s bleeding from her head, but her eyes are open. It’s a kindness that the current hasn’t carried her away.
“Sansa!”
His unfocused eyes search the shore, but his lungs fill with breath and he realizes it’s his voice, his panic, his disbelief, not someone else’s. He doesn’t remember how he gets her to shore or what thoughts blaze across his mind as he swims to safety. There must not have been any because if he thought too long, he would have known what he was about to find.
Sandor lays her down in the flattest part of the shore. She’s so cold, her skin pale. She’s always been pale but not like this. He lays on top of her to drive warmth into her body but he’s shaking too badly.
“Why?”
He doesn’t have the heart to yell it, so he whispers it against her cheek that’s like ice on his lips.
“Why?”
She doesn’t answer. He holds her anyhow.
IV.
At midnight, Sandor goes to the bridge to admit defeat. It’s taken two loves from him—the first a vibrant blossom and the second a nascent bloom. It seems fitting that he honor his hurt with the flowers he carries. If the bridge wants him too, Sandor decides it can take him. Like a cancer, it’s killing him slowly anyhow.
He’s not alone when he arrives and his feet shuffle to an abrupt stop as he steps onto the bridge. The moon shines like it did that night he found her so full of wild hope and dreams of love. She smiles at him and his feet move without accord to her. He wants to ask her why but isn’t sure he needs the answer anymore.
Sansa takes his hand and he’s more relieved than sad to find it warm. He’s been worried sick that she might still be cold. Sandor places the white roses on the ledge of the bridge.
She doesn’t notice the gesture but instead keeps her blue eyes on him. “I did.”
“Did what?”
“Love you.” She lifts his hand to her lips and her kiss there is warm too. “I’m sorry.”
“I know.” He kisses the top of her head and turns to leave. If he doesn’t go now, he’ll want to stay with her like this forever.
Sandor looks back only once. The flowers are gone and so is she.

((This started as a fun little drabble by @colibrie and it was such a cute image that I had to draw something for it, so here you go.))
釣り - Fishing

"Otō-san! Otō-san!" Cho yelled, charging forward to wrap Yoshi's knees in a strong (and wet) hug, beaming a snaggle toothed smile that could rival the sun. "Look! SanSan and me got a biiig feesh! Just like Chio-san!"
"Is it big enough for all of us to eat, otō-sama?" San queried, big eyes peeping adorably from beneath his over sized hood even as his tiny arms easily pinned the struggling koi in place on the paving stones.
There was not a single part of him that could be angry, even the part keenly aware of the disapproving stares spearing into his back.
"I am very proud my sons," he replied, kneeling down to properly meet his eldest boy's eyes. "It was kind of you to want to help feed others, and resourceful of you to work together to achieve your goal. But these fish are not for eating."
"Why would you waste time and resources to keep fish that aren't for eating?" San asked, cocking his head as Cho clicked his beak in confusion.
"Koi are special fish," Yoshi explained, raising his voice ever so slightly to cover the disapproving "tsk" that hissed from the group behind him. "They are symbols of fortune, luck, and fortitude. In return for our care they bring blessing to the house and all under its roof."
"How can a fish bring blessings?" San asked with a frown, ever the inquisitive skeptic.
"There are powers at work in this world beyond what we can see, Sannan," Yoshi chided gently, barely suppressing a chuckle at the nonplussed look he received in reply.
A loud sniff ended his amusement, and he quickly looked down to find big, tear-filled eyes staring up at him.
"Are the symbols gonna do bad things now cause we tried ta eat 'em?" Cho whimpered, lip wobbling as a few salty lines rolled down his cheeks.
"No Aka-chan," he soothed, catching the edge of his sleeve to clean his child's cheeks. "You and San-chan didn't act out of malice. If you put the koi back and apologize, they will understand. And then, I will take you to the river and help you catch some fish for supper."
"But you said we aren't allowed to swim in the river. It's too fast," San countered, even as he dutifully rolled the captured koi back into the pond with a loud splash.
"Yes. I will show you how humans fish. But first…"
He led his sons to the edge of the pond, pleased when they offered the appropriate bows without prompting.
"We are sorry for trying to eat you, koi-sama's," Cho stated, nudging San until the smaller yōkai also mutter a half-way decent "Sorry."

New Year, New AU Prompts are here!
Thank you to all who signed up! Can't wait to read the prompt fills!
Your prompt fill should be at least 500 words. Your fill can be a drabble, text message fic, one-shot, multi-chapter, whatever you choose.
Please tag "SanSan New Year, New AU 2024" on AO3 and/or tumblr so we can track all the wonderful fics!
Post by 29 February. For multi-chapter fics, you’ll only need to have posted the first chapter by 29 February. You can post sooner than this. If real life crops up and your fill will be delayed, just post as soon as you can. If you’re unable to fill your prompt, please reach out to @sansanwritersguild.
Prompts assignments are below the cut:
1: To: @littlewolfbird From: @fuzzychapstick (AO3: Glitterswitch)
High school AU! The older characters can either be fellow students or teachers. Sansa must be a student, however. Bonus points for either cheerleading!Sansa or aversion-to-sweat!Sansa. Most smut is fine, if you want to go that direction, just no urination or defecation kinks. No Sansa and Arya haters.
To: @rayne11 From: @musicfanforlife (AO3: Kylorenfan123)
Horror movie au. You can choose whatever character dynamic you want though I am partial to horror antagonists x protagonists. Smut is fine.
To: @corinalannister From: @3rdstarksistr (AO3: 3rdstarksistr)
Tavern or Bar AU. Smut is fine. No non-con or pregnancy/babies.
To: @fuzzychapstick From: @corinalannister (AO3: CorinaLannister)
Modern day historian Sansa gets thrown back in time to a Westeros of the past. She's not just researching the past, she's now living in it. Sandor is the only one who knows she's not from the time period. Smut is fine. No male pregnancy (female pregnancy is fine).
To: @3rdstarksistr From: @rayne11 (AO3: rayne11)
Futuristic AU: where Sansa is an AI (who may or may not "come to life") and Sandor is a grumpy, lonely but ultimately good at heart individual, long suffering due to the antics of his dear sister Eleanor. No smut. Nothing too dark/sad. I'd appreciate something relatively light hearted. No SA/Violence (may be included in backstory). No troubling scenarios involving Starks (let them all live pls if they're in the fic), Joffrey, or Ramsay, or LF.
To: @cranberry-wine From: @estevnys (AO3: estevnys)
Apocalypse AU. Sandor and Sansa are traveling across the apocalyptic landscape to escape from the Lannisters on his motorcycle "Stranger". Choice of apocalypse up to you-- zombies in no way required. Think Beth and Daryl from TWD. Smut is fine.
To: @ricketyrunt From: @shoshi.gideon (AO3: Shmae)
The Bachelorette AU. Smut is fine.
To: @lemonoak From: @cranberry-wine (AO3: Cranberry_Wine)
Inside the universe of Stephen King's fictional setting of Castle Rock, Maine. Smut is fine.
To: @musicalfanforlife_93 From: @littlewolfbird (AO3: Littlewolfbird)
Your Expertise AU. Whatever you are best at - professionally, hobby-wise, et cetera - that's the AU that I want to read about. Smut is fine. No dubcon, no rape (past mentions is fine), no incest, no minors (as in one is a minor the other is not), no bdsm.
To: @estevnys From: @ricketyrunt (AO3: Ricketyrunt)
Picture them getting stuck in an elevator during a power outage, forcing them to confront fears, share personal stories, and create a unique bond under tense circumstances. Smut is fine. I Don’t love alpha/beta/omega dynamics, but I also want you to write your own thang!
To: @shoshi.gideon From: @lemonoak (AO3: LemonOak)
Mafia princess Sansa and Made man Sandor, what happens is up to you. Smut is fine. No gun or knife kink. No rape or dislike.

I know, I know... but y'all don't understand just how many unfinished, unedited, unformatted fics and drabbles I have on my laptop.
.:WIP Preview:. Seventies AU SanSan written entirely from Sandor's POV
Tor chuckled and Robb glanced over his shoulder at them, shaking his head as they moved past boxes and piles of packing materials. They don’t listen to anyone but her half the time. He said it in a frustrated tone and they were following him and it was all normal, passing what looked like a room that was going to be a living room and into a room that was apparently the large dining room with the kitchen nearby.
They all jumped and Robb’s hands went into his hair as he yelled… Sandor just barked out a shocked sort of amused sound while Theon? Theon howled with laughter, falling against the wall and clapping loudly… Tor froze and Sam and Gilly just looked shocked as hell! Because they walked in… and there was a boy standing there wearing what looked like a football helmet… they heard him call out Robb, look! I found my helmet! Right before a girl who looked to be a little bit older than him fucking whacked him in the head with an aluminum bat, the ping echoed through the room and the boy went down only to pop back up and hold his arms up victoriously.
Sansa came rushing in and wrestled the bat away from the girl. No, no, no, no! No hitting your brother in the head with a bat, Arya Stark! – He’s fine! Look! We have to test the equipment, San-sah! – San, I’m fine, see?! It worked like it’s supposed to. He shook his head as Sansa tried to wrangle these two kids… she held the bat in one hand that was also holding a kitchen towel… and then using the other, grabbed each child one after the other by their upper arm and directed them out of the room. Go wash up for dinner!
She snapped at them before she shot an angry look at Robb and then at Theon, holding her hand up in question. Just stand there and watch, huh, Robb? Robb held his hand up. I just walked in the room! What was I supposed to do? Flash Gordon myself over there?! Chill out, San! His brow shot down and he felt the sudden urge to tell Robb to back the fuck off… it was clear to him that Sansa was stretched way too fucking thin at that moment. But the woman just took a deep breath and held the bat up towards him. Go. Put. This. Up.

I’m working on a labyrinth Drabble. Like. It just hit me. It’s so disjointed I have no idea where it’s going, and I’m at work so I can’t really do my usual process of how I write things out. But I’m typing stuff out in my notes.
You can’t eat food in other realms and expect to be able to leave. And the dream world is so close to magic, maybe it’s easier to pierce the void there?
And then my Sansan addled brain went: you know what character is very similar to Sarah? Sansa. Like crazy so. They’re both dreamers, they both have this idealized version of what it means to be an adult, they’re both going through their selfish phase (at least younger Sansa is)
And who would be a good goblin king? Someone selfish for her attention, someone that wants to both shelter her and make her see the world isn’t fair? That would threaten those around her to push her in the direction he wanted and threaten her loved ones in order to keep her? Sandor. Obviously.
Now the question is, would he use magic to conceal his true nature? Would he transform himself into a pretty boy of her dreams and when the world shatters so does his illusion? Or would he want to scare her with his appearance??
Honest to goodness that’s how bad the brain rot is for Sansan, I was fully committed to this being a strictly Labyrinth fanfic of Sarah and Jarreth but my otp decided to take over while I was halfway through this post.

And may your horse stumble, Harry the Heir, so you fall on your stupid head in your first tilt, Sansa's words, only hours prior, came back to her. As Clegane took her hand, lifting her away from his broken body and onto his saddle, yet another wish, spoken long ago, came to mind: Save him, and gentle the rage inside him.
So the gods had listened after all, and only delayed. Whatever their reasons, gratitude swelled within her. Sansa whispered her thanks as she settled against Sandor’s chest for the long journey ahead.

an overgrown pup with neither bark nor bite. indentation of caps under a furred flap with nothing protruding yet from rounded edges. a condition that could not pierce flesh— not brawn enough to break bone. that vulnerable palpability didn’t go unnoticed by those lacking the foundation to molded into anything but monsters of affliction. terribly mangled auras lurking in the shadow of chaos and tragedy, thirsty for an opportune moment ; a hole in the armor large for their grasp to fit through, a death grip for anything within reach. collecting a debt believed owe ; as if the world owe anyone, anything.
she’s grazed that intrepid touch— and it cinched around the scruff of her neck. ripping her away from one reality to the next ; horror, after horror. a cycle of nightmares in which she is constantly waking up to new waves of terror not felt before. things she could not read in stories or hear in songs, a subject of malicious dream meant to only be experienced, or warned. if the world continuing around her were not a refreshing reminder, she’d believe that her soul had already slipped into the seven hells— that she was waking up to them, one by one.
a mind goes haywire when screaming— there are no rails available to train of thought, no trains at all. instead it is a wildfire in which a gamble ensues— where the flame will bear either death or rebirth. a pup with lungs freshly drained of water dunked back into the pool yet again, baptized in a newfound trauma. cerulean hues open to a new world ; each one darker— and a bit more lonelier than the last.
even in these moments, where she could not hear herself think over the adrenaline that possessed her form from head to toe. dominating vein by vein. where she could not feel her body despite the thrashing of limbs. when she had crept so close to the edge of life, almost allowed a peek into the abyss that encapsulated a dark— uninformed journey ; she never wished for death. and time after time, the mother granted her mercy ; a wilting rose pitied.
blood spat out of the man’s body— onto her, the whole of him dangling from the hilt of a longsword. identity of the wielder hidden by silhouette. illusion of light only furthering her distant mind. she wondered if she had slipped into that unfamiliar region, if the reaper had granted her passage so quickly that it brought an immediate halt to violation. that it vacated her spirit from her body— allowed her soul peace, not [ making her look. ]
a query immediately sated ; knowing that burned face would not have followed her there to that place of no return. she knew he would not die— so she could not have. scooped up by calloused brawn and carried away from what the shattered had believed to be a final resting place. cheated death ; with the knight of uncertainty.

Sansan Drabble
AU: Sansa marries Loras Tyrell
On her wedding day the sun shines brightly in the little bird’s hair. Every guest remarks that she is lovelier than ever at seventeen and with a train of white velvet. Still Sandor stands at the back of the crowd and watches her face for a glimpse of the bright light that had been in her eyes all those years ago, when she came to King’s Landing as a child. If it’s there he doesn’t see it. She wears the well practiced regal expression that has become familiar to him over the years that he’s stood by and watched her be tortured by his masters.
At the feast that night, Sandor has some thought of staying relatively sober, in case Sansa should need him. It’s a vague, half-formed notion and a stupid one. The little bird belongs to her husband now. She will go to her wedding bed like every bride does and Loras Tyrell will not hurt her as cruelly as Joffrey would have. Sandor has less reason than ever now to think of himself as the girl’s protector.
Protect her from what? From her dream come true? She has her pretty Southern Knight at last. Maybe she really will be happy now. It would be less than what she deserves, after all she’s been through.
With that in mind, Sandor gets so drunk he can’t see.

Sandor's next door neighbors were having some kind of sex marathon.
He still had to write his end term paper and he couldn't concentrate from all the noise.
He took his laptop and decided to write at the coffee shop down the street.
He had a glimpse of luck after all. Sansa, his favorite barista was doing night shift.
Sandor wasn't the only the only guy fanning over her. Some douchebag was asking for her phone number. It was obvious she was uncomfortable by his advances.
Sandor poked the guy's shoulder.
''You can't ask a girl out at her workplace! She can't tell you to fuck off!''
''What do you want, jerk!''
''I Want you to take your coffee and FUCK OFF!''
The guy sized up Sandor, took his coffee and sit at a table. Sandor was sure he was waiting for him to go.
''Thank you'', whispered Sansa. ''The usual, Sandor?''
He was taking aback, it was the first time she called him by his first name.
“I’d kill for a coffee…literally.” He groaned. ''I have a paper to write for tomorrow.'' Sandor turned to the guy ''I'll be here all night so keep the coffee coming!''
He got his coffee, open his laptop and went to work. At some point the guy left. Sansa came to see her at the end of her shift.
''Thank you, again.'' She looked at him blushing. ''I wondered why you never asked me out, but now I understand'' She gave him a card with a phone number on it. ''I hope it's not a lack of interest.'' She smiled.

(What’s this? A sansan drabble? Yes!! 🙌💖 A drabble a day keeps the writing block away, or so I’ve heard...)
“You came back!” Sansa exclaimed, spreading her arms wide.
The wolf surged forward, resting his head on her shoulder, and allowing her arms to close around them. “I missed you,” Sansa admitted, blinking tears back from her eyes.
If Arya were there, Sansa knew that she would have laughed at her, though she would have understood. Arya was still close to her own dire-wolf, Nymeria, who was never far from her side, especially during the hunting season.
“Did you really miss this old dog?” Sandor asked, no longer a wolf in her arms, but a nude man. He was impervious to the bitter wind, and the cascade of snowflakes that it carried. Sansa’s cheeks darkened as she looked up toward him, a smile on her lips. “You know that I did,” she said softly, before kissing him chastely on his chin.
It had come as a shock, the first time that her dire-wolf had turned into a man (Sansa had hastily changed Sandor's name from 'Lady' to 'Stranger' instead after he admitted it was an old nickname of his). Rickon had thrown a fit, wanting his own dire-wolf to turn into a man, "or a woman," Robb had teased.
Only Sandor was special, the only dire-wolf to have a human form, as well as a beast-like one. Only he wasn't a beast to Sansa, he never was, as she accepted all of him. She peppered kisses against his scarred skin and felt him begin to purr.
“Always chirping, little bird,” Sandor murmured, as he wound his arms around her waist, and pulled her near. He could never have her close enough, something that had saved her from Joffrey's attention when he and his court came to call. There was only one that Sansa desired, and she bore his mating mark on the inside of her wrist. “You’re sweeter than anyone has a right to be.”
“I love you too, Sandor,” Sansa replied, and then laughed as Sandor spun her around. She was free in his hold, a future she had never dreamed of before, even though she knew he wouldn’t let her go.
Not unless she asked him to, something she would never ask him to do.
No -
Her feet touched the ground again, and she rested against his strong frame. He was warm and safe, the embodiment of her very home.
“I do love you,” Sandor said lowly. “More than you know, Sansa.”

One happy memory
He fell, and the flames engulfed his broken body.
He was cold despite the fire. But his hand was not.
He felt a warmness where the little bird's had been.
He smiled. His eyes closed.
