victorian era doctor riddle rosehearts and his darling patient suffering from hanahaki disease.
dr. rosehearts who is the finest medical practitioner in town, renowned for his expertise and intelligence in the field. so it's only fitting that, as a noble and only child hailing from a wealthy set of parents, you are given the best treatment available. riddle sees so many affluent families and so you're no different. this disease, however, is an oddity. it's very scarcely documented in old texts, and most of the information regarding it has been lost to time. supposedly, the cure to this flowery ailment remains unknown. for riddle, this is as much of a challenge as it is an inspiration. he will cure you; that's his promise as a proud doctor.
so to better monitor you and keep track of your condition, riddle suggests you be moved into his home. a temporary arrangement, of course. it's not nearly as grand as what you're used to, but it is quite spacious. it's half hospital and half home, a place in which patients come to him. for isolation purposes, if their illness is particularly dangerous, amongst other reasons. and what reason would anyone have to doubt the great dr. rosehearts?
your parents are desperate. they'll do anything if it means you'll stop coughing up petals or complaining of a throat scratched sore by persistent thorns. riddle collects samples of the petals in hopes that the town's botanist rollo flamme can identify the exact species, where it commonly grows, how to safely manage it, and so on. it's a peculiar case, one riddle has only ever spied remnants of in old notes.
you rely so heavily on dr. rosehearts, your way of life compromised. you beg him to help you, to get rid of whatever's causing this. it takes time, but rollo identifies the flower. it's a curious finding. such a flower is not native to this part of the country. in fact, there should be no reason for it to be here, for it cannot thrive in this type of environment. riddle is left puzzled. just how did such a flower find its way into your system? what is sustaining it? is it sapping your life away? so many questions arise, yet none can be answered in full.
most importantly, what does the timeline look like if death looms on the horizon? how long does he have before the worst strikes?
it has been some time and, though he knows he ought to remain impartial, dr. rosehearts has found himself infatuated with his poor patient. he tends to you like one might a rose in a garden, diligently and ever so carefully, pruning away signs of sickness in order to keep you somewhat healthy. it feels inevitable, even more so when your legs give out and, much to your horror, little branches with tiny leaves begin to poke through your ankles.
so now you're placed in a wheelchair, and that is that. most days he thinks you're more doll than human, especially since your spirits seem far more dampened than they once were. you wither in your chair, quiet and wistful, longing for good health. though it's in his profession to save, he's never seen you in a more beautiful state. like a statue doomed to exist in stiff silence. like a single flower struggling to brave harsh conditions. like a doll destined to be taken care of by his gentle, capable hands.
he was never allowed dolls as a child. such toys were distracting according to his mother. but now he has one for himself and, even if he thinks himself too old to play with dolls, you're one he just can't put down.
perhaps it's for the best that your legs are broken and your lungs are weak and your entire body is supported by this parasitic plant. with this, he's given the chance to finally indulge in one of the many things he was denied as a child.
the appeal of a doll is that they are versatile. they can wear an entire wardrobe of clothes. they can be bent into various positions. they can look upon you with glass eyes and smile with rosebud lips. and they can't speak. never speak!
riddle doesn't need to be traditional for something so unethical. weddings and rings and courtship mean everything in his dreams, but he is a man watered with logic and sensibility. and you are just a quiet, fragile rose drowning in unwanted, suffocating affection.

Hello Mr Bossman! (and possibly anyone else who reads this)
Its an honour to be here, I have a few questions. First i appologise for the long paragraph, you may dismiss it for the questions at the bottom. For context, i am here after finishing TMA and being up to date with TMAP, i then went over and listened to RQG, and have just finished listening to Epilogue 3 and might i just say, good sir I am grateful for your podcasts. I am currently just a few months away from my final exams of High School, and as someone who even just 1 year ago was very lost, struggling with school and being just overwhelmed. TMA isnt exactly comforting, but the characters and plot managed to serve as a good form of escapism while sorting myself out. I found my self engaging more in creative things that i had originally put aside in favour of maths and science (which i hated but thought i needed to do). I started drawing again, even if just fanart. and i found things going well. By finding podcasts, story telling and these communities have helped me in my own understanding of what i want in life. I got an ADHD diagnosis earlier this year, and almost directly after started RQG and as my first hyperfixation (that i was aware of as an hyperfixation) gosh dang it hit hard. (in a good way). Ive been able to do so much more creative writing and drawings, and got re-involved with a small dnd group with some friends who i played one game with almost 4 years ago now. So overall, inspirational sounds cringe, but it was. Im doing my best with the upcoming exams, but trying to get in to Medicine is not my only prority, and the fact ive been re-introduced to my first love (Literature and story telling), im planning to go do an Arts degree and i know i wouldnt have been able to confidently make this decision, or even have survived this long in the school system without the work you and your coworkers do. Now the sap is out of the way, Question time! (if you could answer even just one of these questions it would be so cool)(they go in order of RQ relevant to random stuff)(dont feel pressured to answer all/any. i know i wrote alot): 1. what would you say is the best way to draft out a long-form story. (with "Erasing the Line" as an example) Did you start at the end, with the links to the overarching plot.
2. When working with the players (in a form of TTRPG), what did you do to make sure you didnt miss relevant timing of plot points/ avoid creating spoilers while still giving enough detail?
3. What are good places to start with making a job out of storytelling/voice acting/audio etc. In the case of RQ, how is this a job and where do i sign up please! /j (what i mean is, how is best way/how did you find all the people involved and was there a common path that you were all on before getting to where you are now?) 4. Do you have recommendations for Terry Pratchett Books, i may be an literary-leaning student, but it seems i have never actually properly read any of his books. so where is best place to start?/What did you read first?
5. Similar authors or similar inspirations? Did you have a favourite podcast you listen to in your free time that you havnt had a hand in producing/directing/working on. 6. Favourite song/album/artist. And more specifically, what you like listening to in background when doing either writing or (for ttrpg) character research/game planing. 7. Since the olympics are on at the moment, what has been your favourite sport to watch, if you have been watching at all. Thank you for your time :)
Thankyou for all the kind words. Knowing our work is helping people really keeps our engines fired up. Let's see if I can't answer your questions: 1. I "sandbox" which is where I just shove everything I can think of into an unorganised bullet point list. Characters, setting, plot, all of it in one big mess. Then I decide what type of story you want to tell, copy and paste to a new document and then start to organise the thoughts (with the sandbox on standby if new stuff comes in I don't know what to do with). I think of it like scultping, you cut away bits and reshape until something comes out the other end that is story shaped. Only then do I attempt to build the sandcastle and put something coherant together like a synopsis or scratch draft etc.
2. Very tricky. I did a complete review and update of all notes after each recording session and don't forget the audio eas edited. I made lots of gaffs that you never heard as audience.
3. I contacted anyone I could convince to take part and just proved I was serious by overworking. I don't reccomend that route. Unfortunately it really is "who" you know. That doesn't mean chase established professionals as much as it means you need to get out there and associate with other up-and-comers who match your vibe. For me the route was long and windy and not a particularly good example. 4. I normally recommend people do not read his books in publication order. Don't get me wrong, its wonderful watching his craft grow from one title to the next but I would recommend new readers tip their toe into his later works to see if they like where he ended up before committing the time. I often recommend 'Monstrous Regiment' as people's first one. My favourite though is 'Thief of Time.'
5. I don't get much time to listen to podcasts in the last couple of years. I used to listen to a lot of non fiction. 'Stuff you Should Know' and that ilk. I also read a fair amount of classic YA fiction to unwind (Windinsger trilogy, Bartimeous, stuff like that.) 6. Paul Simon's Graceland but when working I assemble a playlist for each seperate project that is tonally appropriate. If I really need to focus I listen to Classical Minimalism. Or the Old School Runescape soundtrack. I'm allowed to be ecclectic. 7. I am actually in an incredibly busy work crunch at the moment so haven't seen any of it!

Stackpack Secures $6.3M to Reinvent Vendor Management in an AI-Driven Business Landscape
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/stackpack-secures-6-3m-to-reinvent-vendor-management-in-an-ai-driven-business-landscape/
Stackpack Secures $6.3M to Reinvent Vendor Management in an AI-Driven Business Landscape

In a world where third-party tools, services, and contractors form the operational backbone of modern companies, Stackpack has raised $6.3 million to bring order to the growing complexity.
Led by Freestyle Capital, the funding round includes support from Elefund, Upside Partnership, Nomad Ventures, Layout Ventures, MSIV Fund, and strategic angels from Intuit, Workday, Affirm, Snapdocs, and xAI.
The funding supports Stackpack’s mission to redefine how businesses manage their expanding vendor networks—an increasingly vital task as organizations now juggle hundreds or even thousands of external partners and platforms.
Turning Chaos into Control
Founded in 2023 by Sara Wyman, formerly of Etsy and Affirm, Stackpack was built to solve a problem she knew too well: modern companies are powered by vendors, yet most still track them with outdated methods—spreadsheets, scattered documents, and guesswork. With SaaS stacks ballooning and AI tools proliferating, unmanaged vendors become silent liabilities.
“Companies call themselves ‘people-first,’ but in reality, they’re becoming ‘vendor-first,’” said Wyman. “There are often 6x more vendors than employees. Yet there’s no system of record to manage that shift—until now.”
Stackpack gives finance and IT teams a unified, AI-powered dashboard that provides real-time visibility into vendor contracts, spend, renewals, and compliance risks. The platform automatically extracts key contract terms like auto-renewal clauses, flags overlapping subscriptions, and even predicts upcoming renewals buried deep in PDFs.
AI That Works Like a Virtual Vendor Manager
Stackpack’s Behavioral AI Engine acts as an intelligent assistant, surfacing hidden cost-saving opportunities, compliance risks, and critical dates. It not only identifies inefficiencies—it takes action, issuing alerts, initiating workflows, and providing recommendations across the vendor lifecycle.
For instance:
Renewal alerts prevent surprise charges.
Spend tracking identifies underused or duplicate tools.
Contract intelligence extracts legal and pricing terms from uploads or integrations with tools like Google Drive.
Approval workflows streamline onboarding and procurement.
This brings the kind of automation once reserved for enterprise procurement platforms like Coupa or SAP to startups and mid-sized businesses—at a fraction of the cost.
A Timely Solution for a Growing Problem
Vendor management has become a boardroom issue. As more companies shift budgets from headcount to outsourced services, compliance and financial oversight have become harder to maintain. Stackpack’s early traction is proof of demand: just months after launch, it’s managing over 10,500 vendors and $510 million in spend across more than 50 customers, including Every Man Jack, Rho, Density, HouseRx, Fexa, and ZeroEyes.
“The CFO is the one left holding the bag when things go wrong,” said Brandon Lee, Accounting Manager at BizzyCar. “Stackpack means we don’t have to cross our fingers every quarter.”
Beyond Visibility: Enabling Smarter Vendor Decisions
Alongside its core platform, Stackpack is launching Requests & Approvals, a lightweight tool to simplify vendor onboarding and purchasing decisions—currently in beta. The feature is already attracting customers looking for faster, more agile alternatives to traditional procurement systems.
With a long-term vision to help companies not only manage but discover and evaluate vendors more strategically, Stackpack is laying the groundwork for a smarter, interconnected vendor ecosystem.
“Every vendor decision carries legal, financial, and security consequences,” said Dave Samuel, General Partner at Freestyle Capital. “Stackpack is building the intelligent infrastructure to manage these relationships proactively.”
The Future of Vendor Operations
As third-party ecosystems grow in size and complexity, Stackpack aims to transform vendor operations from a liability into a competitive advantage. Its AI-powered approach gives companies a modern operating system for vendor management—one that’s scalable, proactive, and deeply integrated into finance and operations.
“This isn’t just about cost control—it’s about running a smarter company,” said Wyman. “Managing your vendors should be as strategic as managing your talent. We’re giving companies the tools to make that possible.”
With fresh funding and a rapidly expanding customer base, Stackpack is poised to become the new standard for how modern businesses manage the partners powering their growth.

These tools not only help in creating structured data models but also enable data architects and analysts to make informed decisions. Let's explore some of the best tools available in the market for data modeling that can transform your data management approach.
What is Data Modeling?
Data modeling is the process of creating a visual representation of a data system's structure, which includes defining the data elements and their relationships. This process aids in identifying how data will be stored, accessed, and utilized across various applications. By using data modeling, organizations can design efficient databases, minimize redundancy, and maintain data integrity, ultimately leading to better business decisions.

While Wind was companionably leaning up to her friend's neck, Hanar spoke quietly, “That class of yours drew quite a crowd. When I had nothing else to do, I took your coin box through them. You made two gold, five and three. I put it with the rest of your coin for count up, this evening.”
“Thanks, Hanar. What Mama Dragon told me this morning, that I can take up spear work, means that I am getting better. Be honest, I really don't want to leave you and rest of the Rom. The problem is that when I am adventuring on other worlds, I am not just going places for fun. I am battling many forms of evil and bringing those places as much good as I can. I can't stay here and do that too.”
Hanar nuzzled Wind and replied softly, “I do know that, Wind, my dear. Just keep your promise to come and visit us as often as you can. We all understand. Even old Marchhare has said that he will miss you. You have made quite an impression on us all in the short time that you have been here with us.”
Hanar sailed their dishes and mugs into the rinse tub with her magic's usual accuracy and snorted, “Enough gloom, Doomsayer! Race you to the dancing green!”
Some ponies were already there to watch the Rom unwinding from a day cramped into their booths. The tune being struck up was that ancient favorite, Two Green Vines. Wind and Hanar happily took their places, paired off and joined into the dance under way.
Between dances, Hanar pointed with a chuckle to a frustrated pony over near the musicians! “Another of the Royal Academy of Music professors! The poor sap is trying to get Two Green Vines written in standard Equestrian music notation! Sometimes, just for fun, we will take their notes and try to dance to what they write! It is hilarious!”
Nodding, Wind asked, “Isn't Two Green Vines one of the oldest Rom tunes? How long have they been messing up?”
Hanar sat to watch the music professor as she answered, “Um, yes. The Vines is the second oldest tune we have. Only the Shehan Ja Rom is older. And they have been trying for about six hundred years or so. They are so sure that theirs is the only way to write or make music that even standing there and hearing ours fails to clue them that ours is completely different!”
Wind nodded and “innocently” wandered over to see what the the professor had written. With a slightly fang bearing smile she borrowed several of his sheets and offered them to the musicians! They saw what was happening and chortled as they took the sheets and started to play what was on them! Whatever it was, it was nothing like the Two Green Vines!
Dancing Rom were nearly tripping over their own hooves, trying to dance to the musical atrocity being played!
Wind rejoined Hanar. They cheerfully joined the madness! Wind managed to get in some sways and slides, nearly falling in the process. Hanar's magic reacting swiftly prevented disaster!
Even the watching ponies could tell that the hoof over tail musical disaster was totally un Romlike! Laughter galed about the dancing green, not all from the watchers, either! Some of the younger Rom were laying on the turf, pounding with their hooves as they laughed!
The professor of music was trying to slink off! He was politely rounded up by Hoof Dancer and Black Lotus. They courteously returned his embarrassingly worthless music sheets.
Wind and Hanar returned to the dance, doing a paired couples version with sways and slides, of The Two Green Vines, now being played properly. They followed that with the brisk and silly That's What Old Marchhare Hates!
After the last dance, Hanar pointed to one pony in their audience. “Look, Wind, love! There is Rushy Glen, the basket pony that you told us about. She has been watching us.”
Wind strolled over to the basket maker. Rushy spoke first, “I came to thank you, Lady Wind. I had to stop making more stock because I don't have any more withys to work with. I mean, I actually have more but they need to soak overnight before they will weave tightly enough to satisfy me.
“Thanks to you, I sold out for the first time since I learned to make baskets. You weren't kidding when you said that the Rom appreciate good work.”
Wind nodded. “Thanks for taking the time to let me know how well it went for you. It is sort of funny how it works, sometimes. The three bands here will be telling every band that they meet about your baskets.”
Rushy smiled, “Any suggestions on how I could do better?”
Wind shrugged, “Better? No, not really. I have adventured on a number of worlds and I have never seen basket work as good as yours. Different? Yes, I do have an idea.
“Could you make very flat baskets that will fit together, maybe on a frame of some sort? Rom need to have things that are compact. These would take two baskets together to hold slices of fresh fruit for drying. If these could stand up on edge and let air at both sides of the fruit at once, a rack of them would take only a little space and easily dry more fruit faster than the flat trays that they use now.”
“Thank you, Lady Wind! That is a wonderful idea! I can make portable ones like you suggested, but I can make some pretty big set ups, too, for the orchard farms in the area!”
Later, as they were settling in for the night, Wind told Hanar about her conversation with Rushy Glen. “She enjoyed watching us dance but she came over to thank me. After I got my baskets and every horse among us saw how good they were, she sold out! She made more stock but ran out of soaked willow withys.”
About the middle of the next morning, while Wind was entertaining foals and a number of adult ponies with her slight of hand tricks, Myest quietly brought her a long cloth wrapped thing.
Wind bowed to him and to the audience. “I need to see what my friend and excellent smith, Myest has made for me. Do not go yet. I will have more things for you to enjoy.”
She unwrapped the package. A beautiful short, close combat spear emerged, the blade, iron strapping back of the head to stout hooklike guards about a third of a meter back all glittering in the sunlight. All of the iron and steel work showed the intricate swirled layer patterns of the finest and strongest known smithcraft. The shaft was of dense Rom blackwood, covered by fine but shallow carvings that would improve grip at the same time as making so ordinary a thing into a work of art.
Wind's breath caught in her throat at the sight of it! Reverently she laid the wonderful weapon across her lap and, holding it in her flesh hand, extended the index claw of her mechanical one. She lightly ran the claw down the length of the sharpened edges of the spear's point. Her head was tilted as if listening, her eyes half closed, lips curled up in a smile as she did it.
She carefully re wrapped it and laid it close to hand. Standing, she gave Myest a hug. “That is the most perfect spear that I have ever seen or held. Thank you for taking the time from your more important work to make this for me.”
An RRP pony in the audience asked, “What work could be more important than an amazing weapon like that?”
Wind, still holding the smith in her arms, replied, “Kitchen knives. Spoons. Ladles. Spatulas. Fire cranes, griddles, and ovens. Pots and pans. Hinges. Locks. Corner and edge bindings for trunks and chests.
“All the things that are the tools and parts of a peaceful life. The spear is a tool to allow those important things to be used in comfort and safety.”
Marchhare's bray of understanding said, “You truly understand the world as we Rom see it. That is wonderful of you. So few, especially of warriors like yourself, grasp that underlying principle. You make the Rom proud that you number yourself among us.”
Myest, turning from Wind's hug of thanks, replied, “Indeed we are. That is why, as she is allowed them again, Rose and I take the time to restore to her the tools of her skills.”
The RRP pony sprinted for their office tent, shouting, “Lady Wind has a spear! Let's see what she can teach us about that!”
As the whole RRP contingent charged back down the midway, a burly unicorn in the audience snorted, “Ain't nothing to a spear! Just a pointy thing on a stick! I got a standard issue RRP spear up at my shop, just finished for delivery. I could outfight that thing without no magic at all!”
Wind responded instantly before he could retract it or try to weasel off! “You are on! Safety covered fight. Five gold says you are afraid to actually do it!”
Wind was fishing in her bag of holding and pulled out a handful of gold. She noticed that Hanar's magic, so pale as to be nearly invisible, was right there. Trusting the showmanship of her friend, Wind casually flipped five gold pieces into Hanar's magic and put the rest away in her bag!
Looking up, she saw that Hanar, with natural showmanship, made the five coins float together in a neat line, spinning to flash in the sunlight and spaced so that even those at the back of crowd could count them! They changed formation into a taunting pentagram of gold coins!
He snapped sourly, “You gonna regret that, soon's I get back with a real spear, not some pretty toy!”
Corporal Hayes delayed his departure. “Not that we don't believe you, Banginiron, but put up your gold before you go. I will hold the stakes.”
Ears flat, eyes squinted, and lips curled over yellowed teeth, his magic dug out the five gold bits from his saddlebag. He was about to slap them down into the dirt, but saw every eye in the audience watching him. Many of them were customers of his.
He put the coins into Corporal Hayes magic and stompped off. It was not long before he returned. The safety scabbard was already on his spear.
Corporal Hayes took Wind's beautiful spear and verified that the safety cover was properly secured. His magic was reaching for Banginiron's spear but he pulled it back.
“Don't trust me, Hayes?”
“I just verified Lady Wind's; only fair to do yours too.”
“She just a Rom. Can't trust them. Why you call her Lady, huh?”
“It is all up and down the RRP's mirror network. We call her that because both Princess Celestia and Princess Luna call her Lady, that's why. Now, your spear, or I declare a default and give her the money.”
Grumbling, he presented the spear for inspection.
Corporal Hayes looked at the bindings holding the safety cover on and gave a light tug. The cover fell right off. Head tilted to stare askance at the smith, he commented, “No wonder you didn't want me to look it over. Could have been a bad accident. Wind wins because you cheated.”
A brightly cheerful voice interrupted, “Oh, this could really be fun!” Wind was digging in her bag again! “Lets make it ten each, winner take all. Best three out of five goes?”
Corporal Hayes asked with concern, “Are you sure, Lady Wind? This has sharp edges and a point.”
“May I see it up close? Won't touch, just want to look.”
Corporal Hayes extended the spear for her.
“He said it was done? Are your issue spears really this bad? That's a pony made wheel if I ever saw one. It has dents from the hammer. The edges aren't even or quite true and the ferrule is off center. The shaft isn't even true. It has two knots in it and the oil finish isn't even.
“You have an apprentice, right, Mister Banginiron? He made this?” Looking into his enraged eyes, her voice dropped sadly, “Oh dear, THIS is your work?”
She turned to Corporal Hayes and asked, “Are all of your issue spears this bad? How long has he been cheating the RRP? You need to find a proper smith. Rushy Glen, over there, shows that town ponies CAN do first rate work. For your own sakes, look around for a good smith.”
Banginiron growled, “They don't matter much! They are throw away things and hardly ever used.”
Wind retorted, “Throw away? You mean BEFORE the fight, so that you have a fair chance?”
“I gonna turn you into pig feed! Call my work bad, will you?”
As she stepped past the inner rope, Wind called out, “You in the audience watch out, he has a dangerous weapon, and I mean to himself and anyone close by!”
The smith ducked under the rope, spear gripped in his magic as he charged Wind's back!
She made a simple spin, changing from one foot to the other, putting herself on the opposite side of him from the spear! Her own batted his down, using the iron strapped part of the shaft!
His spear point dug deep into the turf, driven by his momentum! As it did, Wind flipped hers around, the handle going between his legs! Entangled and tripped he landed heavily! Wind was on his neck that fast! Her spear point in its safety sheath was pushing under the back of his jaw!
Corporal Hayes called, “Kill to Lady Wind! Contestants separate and start trial two!”
The horribly embarrassed smith snapped, “You means ONE! Never called that one.”
Hayes pointed out, “You didn't give me a chance, trying to do a coward's stab in her back while she was getting ready. You attacked her. That makes it ONE. Get ready for TWO!”
As they actually faced each other, an RRP pony in the audience commented, “I recognize how she's standing! She used that same guard with the staff! She beat us when we were ganged up three on one, using that start.”
The smith appeared to have actually thought about how Wind had beaten him that first time. This time he charged her, carrying the spear more forward, and the point on his centerline, so that he could flick it swiftly to either side for cut or stab!
Wind stepped to the spear side of her opponent. He switched position to keep her centered! Her metal bound shaft with its stop hooks caught his spear shaft, simply pushing it low and sideways! He tripped on his own spear! As he tumbled past her, he felt the solid small area hit between his ribs, just behind his foreleg!
Corporal Hayes called, “Kill two, for Lady Wind!”
Wind stepped over to her fallen opponent and put her flesh hand and arm under his barrel, between his forelegs and casually lifted. The smith's forelegs were flailing well above the ground as she held him up without even breathing hard. Her calm stare into his eyes reached him.
“She cheatin'! Ain't no critter on all Equestria that strong!”
Corporal Hayes responded, “Correct. Maybe a dragon. Thing is, Wind, as you might notice from every part of her, is NOT from Equestria! She was raised by a dragon, where she comes from. Met her Mama. Nice lady. Good thing too, because I would not want to fight the dragon that calls her kitten!”
Wind gently lowered him to the turf while saying, “You did not think it cheating when you thought you were stronger than me. You did not think a surprise attack from behind before the contest was supposed to start was cheating. Now I am stronger than you and that is cheating? No. Just a simple natural difference. That, and I fight fair.”
He tried charging in, swinging to use the edges of his spear point to cut with!
Wind batted at the swinging shaft with her metal arm, gripping it just behind the head! Her near foot was planted on her spear's butt and her flesh hand was guiding the point. He hit it full tilt, just at the chest, throat junction! Wind pushed him sideways so that he could tumble past, gasping and choking! There was a cracking, splintering as he went down!
Wind cast the spear point and a handsbreadth of shaft down in front of him to join the spear shaft that he was laying across.
Corporal Hayes called, “Kill THREE to Lady Wind!”
They were interrupted by Black Lotus leaping past the safety ropes medical kit in her magic! She rolled Banginiron to his back! Probing the deep bruise on his throat, she touched him high on his neck with her magic. He fell totally still! Rapidly shaving the area where Wind's spear had driven deep, making a ghastly bruise! Taking a scalpel from her kit, she sliced across the front of his windpipe and inserted a tube with a stop collar to keep it from going in too far.
As his breath gusted out and pulled shuddering in, she arranged ties to secure the tube into place.
She called, “This match is OVER. Banginiron will live but he will need another surgery in about a week. He needs to rest until then. Any good doctor can stitch up the hole that I had to make so that he could breathe again! Take him to the First Aid tent to wake up!”
As Wind was putting her winnings into her bag, a town pony among the watchers asked, “Why are you upset? Thought that you were a warrior!”
Wind gave him a level stare that gave him the shivers as she replied mildly, “Show me any warrior who likes to kill, who slays for the fun of it, and I will show you a monster worse than any creature or enemy that he might kill.”
The pony actually paused, brow furrowed in thought. When he did speak he offered, “I have been watching your demonstrations. I think I understand better what I was seeing after what you just said. Thank you.”
To the surprise of the many onlookers, Wind bowed to him. “You have made me proud of ponies like you. You not only watch, you do think about what you see.”
The RRP contingent thoughtfully asked, “Um, are you OK, Lady Wind? We do know that you are working on an emotional recovery from a really nasty battle, where you were seriously wounded.”
Wind, leaning on her spear, nodded, “I am alright. If you want to spar, I will be happy to work with you. Let's try to avoid messing up like what Banginiron did.
“Show me your training drills. I will see what we can do to make the dangerous side of your work safer for you.”
“Fair enough, Lady Wind. Here are the issue spears from our armory.”
Wind took each one and examined it carefully. She nodded, lips pursed in thought, ears somewhat forward. “These will do. They are not the best, but far better than what Banginiron made.”
She stepped over and recovered the shattered spear shaft and head that were left behind when the smith was taken to the Aid tent. Showing them to the RRP ponies, she pointed to its many faults.
“See, here where it broke at that first knot behind the head? Knots like that seriously weaken the shaft. The head was not good when we started, as I pointed out then. Now, it is worse!”
Pointing with a claw, she showed them, “The weld securing the ferrule to the blade is cracking just from the small amount of stress caused by being driven into the ground ONCE. If it hit armor or anything hard, like a wagon side this would almost certainly either break free of the blade or come off of the shaft entirely.
“Sight down the blade. Forget the hammer dents. See how the blade has bent? It has little or no temper. Remember, this is from being driven into the ground ONCE. Even if the rest did not fail, the spear blade would bend if it hit anything hard.”
The RRP commander commented, “The stamps on these other spears say that they were made by the smith in Frezin Springs. We are supposed to buy locally, to encourage the economy of the area. Based on what you just showed us, we will go back to buying from Frezin Springs.
“Now, can you show us how to use these properly?”
Wind gestured welcome to her roped off space as she said, “Sure. First, show me your regular combat drills. Then I will have a good idea how to do it best.”
After several minutes of the clatter of thrusts being blocked and riposts being made, Wind called a halt. “Commander, do you have a written manual of arms or is this the result of good military service?”
Eyes wide and ears up in surprise, the commander gave her a book from his saddlebag. “We do have a manual of arms. It was written by the High Commissioner of the Royal Roads.”
Wind accepted the book skeptically, “Written by a high born noble?”
She began to read, leafing through, pausing, looking back, going forward more carefully. She picked a shady spot and worked her way through the whole thing.
Ears up and smiling in admiration, she returned the book. “Commander, if you ponies follow that manual, you will be as well trained with spears at both single combat, small and large unit battles as any army I have ever heard of.
“This High Commissioner of the Royal Roads actually knows his way around spear combat. He reads like one who has used them at every level and learned it well. Better, his writing style is clear and easy to follow.”
As he took the book back, the commander snickered, “HER, you mean. Princess Luna is the High Commissioner of the Royal Roads. And yes, she actually has had a LOT of real battle experience, going back all the way to the first battle of the Sunlord War, at the founding of Fortress Canterlot.”
A chortling Hanar told the stunned Wind, “Yes, he does mean our Midnight. And yes, she is somewhat over four thousand years old.”
Wind sat. Taking a deep breath, she muttered, “Somehow, she doesn't act like it at all.”
Hanar snorted in amusement, “She and Tia gave up being stuffy NOBLES a long time ago, if they ever were!”
The RRP gathered about Wind, asked, “Are we really that good?”
Wind nodded, “I don't exaggerate things like that. Maybe about the size of the fish that I almost caught, but not about fighting skill. With spear or pike you guys are about the best unit that I have had the pleasure of seeing. The Princess really cares about her troops. She wants them alive and whole at the end of the fight. That shines through almost every page.”
The commander quietly laid a pouch of coin in front of Wind. “Thank you, Lady Wind. It was worth it for us to hear that, especially after the way that you showed us so much about other ways of combat. Especially that lesson about THINKING as the best weapon in our arsenal.”
“You are all most welcome, commander. I may be a tiny bit out of line here, but I want to extend the welcome of our camp to you and your troopers. As you have always been good to the Rom, so I want to return that goodness to you.”
There was a slight mocking bray from behind her as Marchhare stated, Do you have any idea how much this lot can EAT?”
Wind spun about and booped his snout before he could dodge! “Yes! I do, especially where Ka'chek is involved! If you don't welcome them, I will carry our entire serving board out to them!”
The old donkey smiled, slowly fading away until only his long ears remained visible! His voice came out of the emptyness between his ears, as he graciously invited, “Lady Wind is correct, and we owe the Royal Road Police a lot. Our camp is open to you as soon as the closing bell of the fair is rung.” His ears quietly disappeared.
Hanar was giggling like mad! “I haven't seen him show off like that in simply ages!”
The watching Rom returned to their booths. Wind sat in her space, quietly entertaining foals with her slight of hand magic tricks. Cards did impossible things, like getting fully shuffled by a pony from the audience, being dealt out into four stacks. Wind then tapped the top of each stack. Turning over the top card showed that each was of a different suite. Picking up each stack and dealing it out, left a fan of cards, all of a single suite. At the end, there were four fans of cards neatly sorted by suites!
Wind followed that up by picking up two fans at a time, one of red and one of black and shuffling them together. When all four fans had been shuffled together, she shuffled the two stacks into one.
A filly from the audience drew the top two cards. They were Jokers that had not been in the deck when they were plainly visible fans!
Wind put one Joker on top of the deck and one on the bottom. Cupping the whole deck in her hands, she blew into them and opened her hands.
Instead of cards, a large fluff of sheer scarfs sprang from her hands! One was red and one black!
All too soon, the bell ending the fair rang out across the fairgrounds. As the Rom were closing up, the RRP came to the camp. No horse was surprised when the first thing that they did was help to get things orderly and neatly put away.
All that was left were the serving tables and equipment. And a very active set of cooking fires bridged by griddles, portable ovens and hanging pots! Horses were happily working up dough fillings. Pies were being baked. Simple but savory breads were being set out to cool and fancy rolls and twists, frosted or served with dipping sauces.
Marchhare was happily toasting up his signature skewers. Making quite a pile of them, actually. Wind was looking askance at the mountain of food, far more than would usually be called for as a dinner, even with the RRP as guests.
That was when she noticed that Black Lotus, Hoof Dancer and Hanar were hock deep in making meat and fish pasties and pies.
Strolling over, she pointed out, “That's a lot more than I can eat.”
Hanar gave Wind a gentle poke with her magic as she retorted, “Are you sure? Last I looked you have a bag of holding instead of a tummy!”
Hoof dancer calmly returned Wind's point, “Likely true, Wind. You are not the only carnivore in the world.”
Marchhare smarted, “You certainly are not the only carnivore in the world, just the only one here, in this camp. It is possible that might change. We are simply being prepared.”
The last of the pies were out and tea brewed. The serving line was about to form when Marchhare's caravan rocked some on its springs and the upper half of its Dutch door opened.
A familiar scaled and horned head looked out and called back inside, “I was right! We are just in time for dinner! You are in for a treat! Rom cooking is the best!”
Turning to the old donkey, Mama Dragon asked politely, “Permission to enter your camp, Marchhare?”
“You are most welcome, Mama Dragon! Who is that with you?”
“I have brought along my new apprentice in smith craft.”
Mama Dragon came down the steps and held a hand up. It was taken by a chocolate brown hand and a large brown pony stepped down the stairs to stand by Mama.
She gave Wind a cheerful, lopsided grin and sniped, “Staying away from Manticores these days, Wind?”
Wind practically flew into Mama Dragon's arms first!
Stepping free of Mama Dragon's hug, she stepped next to Penny. Somewhat tongue tied, she managed to say, “Yes, Penny, I have. The local manticores are safe from me.” She swallowed, “Um, it is really great to see you. Uh, I missed you a lot.”
“Might be hard to believe, Squirt, but I missed you too. Looked up Mama Dragon to see how you were doing. SOME CATTER blabbed to her about me doing smith work. Now, I am her apprentice. Not easy keeping up with her lessons, either.”
Wind giggled, “No, I would not expect it to be easy but I am glad that she took you in. You are good!”
Penny quietly presented Wind with a bunch of flowers that she had been hiding behind her back. “You are good too, you silly cat!”
Wind was taken aback, but rallied quickly. “Thank you, Penny! Bad timing though. You need to be over there, in line to get food before there isn't any left! Around this crowd, there are only the quick and the hungry!”
Giggling as the big mare sprinted to the line, she retorted, “Mama Dragon warned me about that! The reality is even worse than she said!”
Actually our visiting RRP stepped back and gave Penny and Mama Dragon places in line. Mama Dragon pointed to where Wind and Hanar were serving, “They do make a cute couple, don't they, Penny?”
As she was getting her plate and mug, Penny bit her lip as she replied, “They do. What if Wind wants to stay with her?”
Hanar overheard and asked, “Mind if I answer that? Wind loves you. Wind loves me too. I love Wind. You love Wind. When this all started for us, I knew that she would be leaving us. She will be going with you and adventuring. When she visits here, she will always be a welcome member of my family, regardless of who I marry. You will never be turned away from my camp either. I hope that you both will come to see us often.
“We say that Our Loved Dead Are Always With Us. So also with departed friends. We carry them in our hearts and when we meet again our life is the sweeter for it.”
Penny nodded sagely, “You make wonderful sense, Hanar. Be sure that both of us will visit you often. When you can, come see us at Mama Dragon's.
“Your way lets Wind love all of us and we her. Thank you for taking such good care of her while she is here.”
By then, Penny had a plate filled with a huge assortment of goodies and Wind, eyes sparkling, poured her a large mug of tea.
Mama Dragon had a nice full platter too, but filled from the carnivore part of the serving line. She got her tea and joined Penny under a shady tree to eat.
When the line was done, Wind and Hanar helped themselves and joined them. Penny noticed at once that Hanar was not at all bothered by Wind and Mama Dragon happily chomping down assorted meat and meat loaded dishes.
Instead of judging or criticizing, she observed, “I guess that being around Wind helps you to accept her diet?”
“That certainly helps, but Wind is not the first carnivore that we have had around. We once had a gryphon that came to us to have a broken wing bone healed. Hoof Dancer is especially adept at that sort of work. She is teaching me to be a Healer, like her daughter Black Lotus.
“You can't be a Healer if things like blood, raw flesh, and injuries upset you. That goes for diet too. There are even times when a regular horse like me or you actually needs meats. Healing is not a simple science.”

Conclusion
SAP BTP Consumption Credits, in conjunction with RISE with SAP, are ushering in a new era of flexibility and adaptability in business technology. SAP BTP, with its four foundational pillars, is designed to empower the intelligent enterprise by providing essential tools for analytics, application development, database management, and access to intelligent technologies.
The Business Process Intelligence capabilities within SAP BTP and RISE with SAP offer a comprehensive suite of tools for process optimization and enhanced understanding of operations. It takes you a minute to realize you don't need to breathe.
It takes a while longer to actually get used to it. You'd gone snorkeling once, and had a horrible time trying to convince your lungs that breathing through your mouth and not your nose was fine. Honestly, in that regard, you're almost thankful you weren't wearing a spacesuit when your ship exploded—you'd have been unbelievably stressed about the tinny electronic timer reminding you of your dwindling oxygen load. At least you got that over with.
You've still got problems, though. Your ears are ringing something fierce, for one; not that there'd be much to hear, anyway, floating in the interstellar medium like you are. There's also the pieces of ship hull embedded in your back, freezing your entire body as your heat saps into them and dissipates. Unfortunately, if the blast didn't kill you, that probably won't, either. If only you could hop in a sauna.
You turn your head with a wheeze of pain, searching for the wreckage of your ship. It's a nearly futile effort, you know that—you're too far from the nearest star system to have any real light, you'd have to hope any of the pieces were blocking distant stars, enough for you to notice.
Nothing catches your eye.
Nothing? All of your key documents were on that ship. IDs, bank cards, everything. How are you supposed to hail anyone properly without a signal pad? How are you going to pay for lodging and medical care?
...How is anyone going to know you're here?
You begin to turn your head again, and the metal in your back tears something, and you instinctively try to suck in a sharp breath, but nothing comes. A short bout of choking ensues, every movement causing something to dig into you harder, until you finally manage to bite your own tongue and get a hold of yourself. You don't really have many other options. This might be how I die, you think. Then you try to laugh, and regret it.
You know the average distance between star systems is about five light-years, give or take a few. If you got unbelievably, obscenely lucky, you might be on track to come into orbit of Dehon and Parie, the binary pair you were flying towards. If you're even luckier, maybe you're still hurtling forward at half again lightspeed, and if the gods have chosen to smile at you with every single tooth bared, you might even avoid getting shredded by the many other things that hang out in space. That would put you on track to arrive after... oh, two years or so of total space isolation. Of course, you can't confirm any of those assumptions, and you don't know enough to make even reasonable estimates. Really, your best bet is for some other ship to just happen to come by and notice you, and the odds of that are ridiculously low. Interstellar travel takes too long and requires too much energy, so little ships like yours generally only undertake the journey once or twice in a lifetime. Cargo ships are more frequent, but those don't tend to stop for stranded ships, let alone minuscule lone humans like yourself. Even if one does vacuum you up, they'll probably drop you in the body hold, anyway.
So, here you are. Alone, in the glittering lights of space, unable to even see your nose in front of your face.
This will be a fun few years.
You stare at the stars and sigh. There are worse ways to discover you're immortal. Finding out after your starship exploded in deep space is definitely one of the worse ones.
