I saw a post talking about how Mike's love at first sight confession was bogus because the only reason Mike grew close to El in the first place was to use her as a tool to find Will.

While I 100% agree that Mike did not, as he claimed, love El since the moment he saw her, I think the beginning of their relationship is more complex than that, and I think acknowledging this lends more credibility to the idea that Mike doesn't, and never did, love El romantically. Hear me out:

Mike loves to be needed. It is the very essence of his character, and moves beyond just subtext in S4 when he says to Will in the van, "What if after all this is over, she doesn't need me anymore?"

El was all alone and on the run when she was first found by the Party. She needed to be hidden, to be protected, and Mike latched on to the role of protector immediately. He especially liked being her guide through an unfamiliar world, and in doing that, they did grow close, and they did grow to care for each other, outside of anything to do with Will.

That alone didn't push Mike to turn their relationship into something romantic (because yes, it was Mike's decision; El was very vulnerable, unfamiliar with how the world worked, and looked up to Mike to show her the way. Not a great foundation for a romantic relationship, and all the more reason El should end up single and on a journey of self-discovery and independence in S5). The beginning of their romance was a result of Mike's need to be needed in combination with him being a young boy in a heteronormative society that thought “oh, and she’s a girl too, so I guess I’m her boyfriend."

For Mike, kissing El was taking advantage of the fact that there was a girl in his house and she relied on him and according to Ted Wheeler and the rest of the tiny suburban bubble he lives in, that's the stuff of picket-fence romances right there! Off to the Snow Ball they go!

In S3, as he grows more in tune to his feelings and less naive about how romantic relationships actually work, his relationship with El becomes about waiting. He is waiting to finally feel about her how he "should", especially as they become more hands-on and El begins to expect boyfriend-y things of him. He even tries it on for size with his whole "I love her and I can't lose her again" blunder, because no doubt he does love her, but it isn't the way he wants to for the sake of conformity. Maybe if he professes it out loud for the whole world to hear, it'll hit different (it doesn't—it's portrayed comedically, with no swelling music or relieved laughter or running into El's arms. In fact, go watch it again—the music literally dies once he says it).

By S4, he knows it's not going to happen, the feelings aren't going to come—he very visibly realized this when El kissed him and told him she loved him at the end of S3—but he's motivated to keep up the act because in his mind 1) he can't be gay if he's with a girl and 2) he really does still want to be needed by her. That part wasn't a lie, as we know from him saying it to Will in the van. If she still needs him, maybe this could still work even if he doesn't love her romantically. Without that need, he has nothing to offer.

The real substance of Mike and El's relationship is platonic, sibling-like love (they established this the second before they got together in S1 with the "Will you be like my brother?" line, which is a hell of a weird springboard for a first kiss between your central couple, even if it's a chaste one between kids).

It was never love at first sight—it was forced heteroromance at first convenience.

Mike's relationship with El suffers in S3 and S4 because El begins to want more from him romantically, and Mike is not romantically attracted to her. His S5 arc is going to at the very least be about him accepting that for what it is and why (🏳️‍🌈). Personally I think when he learns that Will has feelings for him, it will make the idea of him having feelings for Will potentially less scary in his mind, and that's what will hurtle him toward the end of that arc. That's my hope, anyway!

Hello I hope you are doing well! I wanted to know why, in your opinion, Levi physically lashes out at Eren more than the others? Is it because Eren can heal, or because he’s being too defiant? (I’m not speaking in the context of s4 or trial scene from s1). I just had this question in my head. Love your writing!

Hi there, and thank you!

I think it's because Eren is a moron that routinely endangers the lives of those around him with his reckless behavior, lol.

I mean, Eren being able to heal probably factors in partly with why Levi feels he can hit him hard enough to knock his teeth out, at times, knowing they'll just grow back for him. But if you look at all the times Levi's actually hit Eren, other than the trial scene, it's because Eren was endangering lives. He only hits Eren 4 times in the entire series, though people seem to have this impression that Levi is constantly wailing on him. He's not. But, if you aren't considering the incidents from the raid on Liberio or the trial, then the only other times Levi hits Eren are right before the mission to retake Wall Maria and during the RtS arc. For the latter, Levi hit Eren because he was directly interfering with Levi carrying out his duty as a soldier. He was trying to physically prevent Levi from giving Erwin the serum, while both Erwin and Armin were running out of time and could die at any moment. So Levi punches him to get him to back off. In the lead-up to RtS, this is the only time one might argue Levi didn't have a good reason for hitting Eren, because he hits him and Jean both in his anger and frustration over Erwin's admission that he cares more about his dream than humanity. That's really just a case of Levi losing his temper, and Eren and Jean were both acting like fools, so he took it out on them. You can also understand why, though, because this was the night before a mission that was arguably the most important in Survey Corps history, and Eren's and Jean's actions could easily have negatively impacted morale and also set a bad example of how soldiers in the SC were expected to act. If Levi hadn't broken up their fight, the newer recruits might have taken the lack of disciplinary action as a sign that they could act out of line and get away with it, which is a big no no in any military unit. Without a chain of command, everything falls apart in the military.

I love the series-long payoff of finally talking to this hologram properly on failsafe. Is this room the crystal castle main chambers? I feel like I don't remember seeing the giant she-ra mural but I might be wrong and it's the same room Adora always goes to when training.

Oh I’m going to bite my arm off actually. The LOOK on Catra’s face when Adora says “they’ve been lying to us, manipulating us” she looks so freaking HURT. She’s like “YEAH DUDE IVE BEEN PHYSICALLY ABUSED IN FRONT OF YOU MULTIPLE TIMES LIKE WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT”

idk I used to really not understand why Catra didn’t go with Adora here but now that I have a deeper understanding of the show I totally get it. Dude this is the moment Catra really internalizes that Adora thinks that some of her mistreatment was warranted. Like the fact that Adora leaves bc the horde is hurting civilians but not Catra must have destroyed her. And like I GET IT. BC ADORA HAS BEEN MANIPULATED HER WHOLE LIFE BUT LIKE AAAA SHE’S ACTUALLY SO UNEMPATHETIC IN THIS MOMENT TOWARDS CATRA. And it’s cuz Catra doesn’t give a shit about the civilians so Adora feels hurt by that too bc “how can Catra not care about this?” and she’s in shock and her entire life is falling apart in front of her and like I get it but NGHHH this whole interaction once u understand the characters is UGH.

This post is an incredible breakdown of their miscommunication here, they are both understanding very different things from what the other person is saying.

I want to talk a second about how BPD coded Catra is, specifically in this moment (although there are many great examples later). 

With BPD, there is no sense of identity, that is like, one of the main symptoms of the personality disorder, so it makes sense that for Catra, I’m leaving the Horde = I am leaving YOU. Catra reacts so intensely bc she’s conflagrating both the horde and her. And from her POV it also makes sense bc it was Catra that went to find Adora, not the other way around. We know from promise, this is something that Catra feels resentful about too. 

I also find Catra’s reaction really interesting because it’s one of the only times Catra physically hurts Adora as Adora and not She-Ra. There is no distinction to cognitively hide behind here. She immediately jumps to hurting Adora when she feels that perceived abandonment and then immediately feels guilty, but will do it again to not be abandoned by her once more. And it’s also coupled with the fact that there is the fear of abuse from Shadow Weaver if she doesn’t bring Adora home too. It just shows how poor her impulse control is when it comes to her splitting and idealization/devaluing symptoms. 

Love this pose, love the hiss. I just appreciate when voice actors who are portraying anthropomorphic characters SOUND like the species they're portraying. S1 Catra means everything to me bc she has the most cat-like behaviors in the show. As she grows, she tries to hide those behaviors and try to act more human-like, esp when S4 rolls around.

Glimmer saying “We need you, we need she-ra” ope I’m sure that phrase won’t add to Adora’s hero complex !!!!!!!!!!!! 

God and the way Adora can’t talk to anybody about missing Catra bc everyone in the rebellion (rightfully) hates her. She just has to pretend that she doesn’t care at all about losing her best friend and home. Rewatching the show makes me realize just how fast Adora erases herself and becomes She-Ra basically full time to the point that ppl don't call her Adora, they call her She-Ra. And it's cause she has no idea how to deal with emotions, so she just shoves all of that grief aside and buries it in all of her new duties and responsibilities.

Byler/Style parallels,

OK since the Stranger things S5 trailer dropped (no I haven't watched it nor will I, I don't watch trailers at all) and getting into South Park abt a month ago I noticed some similar vibes between Style and Byler. (please don't bring other ships into this discussion I don't care if you don't ship one or both of these just ignore this post) (this MAY be another long one lmao I'm passionate abt these gays lmao)

this is another long one lmao, get a snack and hear me out.

like they aren't EXACT parallels but they have similarities, not just cause they follow a similar trope (best friends to lovers/childhood friends to lovers) but it's also how they just kinda remind me of eachother (I can very clearly picture the Byler rain fight (the one from S3 where Mike says "it's not my fault you don't like girls") but with Style) and yes it IS partly cause of the trope but we also have one who kinda has an on and off relationship (Stendy and Mileven (again please keep shipping wars out of this I don't care abt your opinions. this is just me Yapping) and yes Mileven is on and off to me cause we have not actually gotten a full season of them together and Happy cause in S3 El dumps Mike and in S4 they are barely together) and his best friend who doesn't really have luck with relationships and if I'm not wrong both ships have had moments in the shows where they've been called Gay (pls be nice if i'm wrong I'm not done South Park yet and I haven't watched Stranger Things since 2022 but yk I can remember gays lmao (plus tiktok has brought stuff back up to me lmao ST is all over my fyp rn)

back to parallels both ships are clearly the closest duo of the main quartet of the Show (there is no doubt about it, like the Quartets are all friends but Mike & Will and Stan & Kyle are closer than the others. (though this isn't me undermining other friendships but I'm focusing on Byler and Style ok and this isn't also me saying that the other duos in the quartets being alike I'm just using them as a parallel that Byler and Style are closer than the other 2 are (or any other duos within the 4)

and genuinely I'm trying to look at this unbiased but I can't FULLY do that, like I'm trying to NOT have Headcanons influence this and I'm trying to keep to things in the canon.

now onto some stupid details I saw people point out on tiktok mostly.

so any Stranger Things fans with eyes and who actually watches the show (Especially Bylers like myself) know that Mike has a habit of looking at Will's lips (I PROMISE THIS IS GOING SOMEWHERE I SWEAR) I was scrolling the Style tag on tiktok a couple weeks ago and I saw a vid or slideshow that Stan does the same sometimes and that's the first things that started the Byler Parallels for me (and yes IK that SP came out first but i watched ST first)

ok these Images I took from a tumblr post that someone took from a tiktok (I think the tt user has a watermark on the images)

(this is like the only SCs I can find of this spesific scene (S4 Vol 2 Van scene) so it's I THINK from Twitter? idk I found them on google cause yea I'm not on twt) and the usernames are in the Scs here

and the one on the left that says "his ass was not listening" is so real for Style too, like to my knowledge Style does also have interactions like this (the one that stands out to me is the one in the bathroom from that one ep where Stan makes that Anti Bullying vid (I could be wrong lmao, I HAVE watched that episode but so many of them kinda blend together for me, and I see this scene on TT a lot) that scene gives the same energy as some of Byler's scenes (especially the Van scene)

and both Byler and Style have had their friendship fallouts, Byler with the S3 rain fight and S4 until El is gone (I won't get into the implication of those scenes for Byler proof cause like every other Byler fan has done that lmao) and Style has times where they end up drifting apart (standouts are the ep where they end up joining that magicians Cult, Guitar Queer-o or Assburgers) but (especially after the Cult ep and Guitar Queer-o) both end up coming back together (though I'm not a million % sure on style cause again I'm on S21 rn but I THINK they're still close after AB) but their relationship (even if it's just as fiends) has changed. Byler has more Romantic undertones (especially after the S3 rain fight cause of what Max says about Mike running to her (El) for forgiveness while Mike runs to WILL instead, and S4 is a whole other story I kinda do wanna go into Byler as an entirely separate thing without comparison to another ship cause I wanna talk abt them a lil more and go more into depth there) and Guitar Queer-o reminds me a bit of the S3 rain fight (not 1:1 but hear me out) cause though not as fast Stan still goes back to Kyle like how Mike went right to Will and not his gf (are you noticing how I'm placing lots of parallels between Stan and Mike here? yea there's a reason for that) and after Assburgers Style seems to talk less than they did before (again that is slightly influenced by stuff I saw on tiktok about it so it might not be 100% correct (again feel free to correct me on any of these little things I've gotten wrong but please be nice about the ships)) like how after Will moved to California he and Mike drifted apart and one of the first one on one interactions Byler has in S4 is the Rink-o-mania fight.

and so I think this brings this Analysis(?) to an end? if I think of anything else I'll add in an edit to this or a reblog but let me know if you wanna see more posts like this cause I honestly really love looking WAY to into things like this. '

It's not that I need more characters and more that RAD itself feels empty, I don't really think there's a point in the SF If you know the brothers are going to win anyways, it feels rigged, the brothers are the student council, the "top" but there's nothing to compare them to, because all students are either SC members or exchange students (who have certain "privileges" as mentioned in OGS2, like having easier clases and the like). Only exception to this rule Is Mephistopheles. Idk, you can't really feel how powerful the SC Is If you don't have a point of reference in how the 'lesser demons' act.

There's has been games with fewer characters that make more livid schools, but to do that you have to distribute their roles so It doesn't becomes numbing. Having more than one (in this case, two) perspectives makes things interesing.

Something I have talked before Is how in certain point in S4, Diavolo makes a survey about what the student body thinks about the exchange students. The result are... Really negative. Like, most of the students either don't care or hate the EEs. But why do they hate them? Or why should *we* care about what this faceless crowd thinks of us? What have we done to them to even warrant this response????

Another example, in the lesson from today, Asmodeus being sabotaged in the SF feels so out of nowhere, why did this demon do that in the first place? Just to win? I don't care that this random demon was punished because it feels the equivalent of moving a rock out the way. Obey Me in general would benefit from having some kind of antagonistic force for cases like these.

A good compromise would be like they did today with Blackjack/Red Devil/Nancy and just have them be a textbox (If you are cheap and don't want to invest in background characters) Michael has been like this since the beggining, Queen Rose was a niche character that had certain following when the dame events happened, and every scene with the Butcher in S3 was comedy gold. No mention of characters like Helene, Griselda, etc. So I think you can nail characters like these If you make the effort.

Hell, Mephistopheles before having a sprite had cult following just from chats and mentions in the main story. OG at least used to namedrop demons that existed in-universe, now it's "a demon" everytime something happens.

RAD just feels small, empty, barren, etc. and I have skipped most RAD related events since before Nightbringer was announced, lol

When did you first start watching Lone Star? Who or what introduced you to the show?

I can't remember the exact timing, but I'm pretty sure I watched the first two seasons while s3 was airing and then caught up after - I wanted to start earlier but I had some issues finding a way to watch the show here!

My introduction to the show was via @three-drink-amy telling me to watch it (repeatedly), @clottedcreamfudge's judicious use of gifs from the show in the gc and a bunch of SC mutuals yelling about the gay howdy wee woo show on my dash every week.

Season 4 was the first season that I watched "live" which I did with @welcometololaland, both of us texting and screaming as we watched each episode together hours and hours after everyone else had.

Which season is your favorite?

Season 3, hands down. I don't know that they'll ever beat it?

Who is your favorite character? (Bonus: If you answered TK or Carlos, who is your favorite besides them?)

Other than Carlos and TK, I think it's Grace. I just adore the her energy and the way that she takes everything in her stride and even when things are hard, she's very practical about it. Also she doesn't take shit from anyone.

Either Nancy because we know nothing about her and I want to know, or Paul because I think he's had such an interesting journey.

What is a scenario or storyline that you would like to see in season 5?

I love @liminalmemories21's idea of a Halloween ep! It would be so fun!

We probably won't get it because of the shorter season, but I'd love more Lonestar-is-a-comedy-actually episodes like Red vs Blue and the (original) Lou arc.

More realistically, I'd love to see Carlos actually grappling with the consequences of his actions in s4 and also working through his grief and TK helping him do that. And I'd like to see an absence of Owen love interests.

What do you think is going on in this still?

I want it to be something silly like Lou 2 is lost in the loft and Carlos is Not Happy about it (the reason for TK's posture) and then he answers his phone in the middle of all of that, hence the facial expression. The phone call isn't that important, it's Owen asking Carlos for help on a side quest.

We all know about the elusive 5x05 spicy scene that has been teased, so what is your prediction for how it could possibly top 1x02?

I don't know about a prediction, but I'd love to see them getting distracted from getting ready in the morning. Carlos (in just his underwear) waking TK up with a kiss and TK pulling him back into bed for a good make out session and that turning into more. A very different vibe to 1x02 but hot nonetheless.

Where was the Tarlos honeymoon in your mind?

I think it was somewhere close to home - with the accelerated wedding timeline (lol) they didn't have time for a long trip for to somewhere far away, and by all accounts, travelling overseas wasn't on their radar anyway (see: TK's disbelief when Carlos says he wants to go to Tuscany). So a long weekend at a nice resort somewhere. Enzo paid for it as their wedding gift because he couldn't make it to the wedding when they moved the date up.

Just one (1)? Impossible! This Rafa fan art by @ambiguouspenny made me actually say "oh fuck" the first time I saw it. I adore the way @whatsintheboxmh uses light in all of her fan art. I love @howtosingit's Carlos episode edits because they a) let me watch all of the Tarlos scenes on repeat (and before I actually get to the watch the episodes when they air because time zones), b) give me an easy way to check canon dialogue and c) make it easy to convince new people to watch the show when they sneak into my DMs and tell me that the number of Tarlos gifs I am putting on their dash is tempting them. @liminalmemories21's Knave-verse might be my favourite Tarlos AU, everything about it makes me swoon. Okay, cutting myself off now.
