ScriptX Weekly Update
2/15/17
Hey, y’all and welcome back to the update. A lot of exciting stuff happened this week, so stick around to see what’s happening.
Announcements
@script-a-world would like me to remind you that we have @scriptastronomer for questions about the effects of planets and moons on fictional worlds.
Featured Posts
A Wild Guest Post Appears
@scriptmedic has recently had an opportunity to guest post on the blog Writers Helping Writers. In this post, Aunt Scripty talks about how to write your character’s pain well. She covers the scale of the pain, how often an author should bring it up, and how much it can ebb and flow.
Welcome to Columbia!
So if you were to build a floating city a la Columbia from Bioshock Infinite, what would you need to consider for your humans to survive? Well, good news: @scriptecology has a post with details on what you need to think about with people that high.Maybe make the launch day April 20th.
Pyromancers Sans Pyro
So, unlike firebenders, someone who wants a fire in real life needs a fuel source (Unless it’s an M. Night Shyamalan firebender). @scriptchemist helps out this asker with figuring out how a sorcerer could light up the night using realistic scientific principles.
“Is a Character With X a Spoonie”
What is a spoonie? According to @scriptspoonie , a spoonie is ““someone with a chronic illness or disability that regularly impacts their energy levels and/or ability to get things done.” With that in mind, there are many illnesses that can make someone need to budget their energy. In this post, the mods give us readers some ideas of what
After the End
Law school is expensive, takes an incredible amount of effort, and it would be such a shame it you were to be disbarred. And then your character is. Whoops. So instead of throwing all that time and money away, what else could your character do? @scriptlawyer has a few ideas for you.
Common Canadian Wildlife
If you’re unfamiliar with Canada, trying to figure out the wildlife you might encounter may be difficult. Luckily, @scriptcanuck has a quick list that you could use for reference.
Flower Here, Flower There, Flower Not Supposed to be There
So you’re going along, writing your story, and your character stops to smell the roses. But then you remember, your character is at the top of a snowy mountain in the middle of winter. Why the heck are there any flowers up here? Well, with a little bit of magic, maybe there could be some? What do you think @scriptflorist ?
Let's Talk Tropes
Tropes are all over the place. Tropes are essentially what help us identify a genre. So how can you use them properly? @scriptstructure helps us writers with some ideas to use our basic components to make a phenomenal new story.
Ask Box Statuses
@scriptkink ‘s ask box is closed due to her hiatus. She thanks you for your patience.
New Family
We have two new family blogs this week. Everyone please welcome
@scriptfirefighter - here to shed some light on, well, firefighters.
And @scriptequestrian - here to help you with your questions about horses and riding.

“Those script blogs are useful for writing” I say and then have scriptcanuck recommended to me
0 notes
Note
Which script blog can I get information from about how a character should identify based on their nationality? The internet hasn't been helping me and I was wondering if there were any experts on the topic or if you could point me to any other blogs that could help?
Your question is a little vague. What do you mean by “identify”? Are you referring to what they call themselves like “I’m American/German/British”?
Depending on what nationality your character is, @scriptbrit @scriptaussie @scriptgerman or @scriptcanuck might be able to help you.
@writingwithcolor may also be able to help you as they have many mods of many nationalities.
If you need, feel free to resubmit with a bit of clarification

Y’all, Holy. Shit. 2,000 followers??? :O
Thank you so much, Shrinky-dinks, for coming to my blog and listening to me talk about stuff. I’m sure you’ve heard this all before, but I wanna say it again - I would never have gotten this far without y’all. <3
So to celebrate, I’ve got someone for y’all to meet!
Say hello to Brainy!
Huh. Brainy, you look a little angry. Is something wrong?
Wait, where are you going with my DSM-5??
...You know what, you can borrow that as long as you need to, Brainy.

Huge thanks to @scriptcanuck for these fantastic drawings!

ScriptX Family Weekly Update
1/25/2017
Welcome back y’all! Just as a quick note before we start, @scriptservicedogs has a special announcement at the end. Anyways, on to the announcement.
Announcements
@scriptautistic has acquired over 1,000 followers!
Featured Posts
A Beautiful Mind
Drugs: they do weird things to the mind. There’s a reason marijuana is sometimes referred to as the magic weed. As writers, it’s good to know how various drugs affect the mind and some of the side effects. @scriptbrainscientist has a great post that explains what’s happening when your character tokes up.
Frozen Desert
As part of a series on the biomes of the world, @scriptecology has written this brief introduction to deserts, explaining what makes a desert and the types of deserts you could use in your world building.
Masterpost on Stimming
When you’re writing your autistic characters, there are plenty of traits that you need to keep in mind. One that can be easy to forget about is stimming, which is why @scriptautistic has written this masterpost on stimming discussing what it is and some examples for a few of the main senses that you could easily use yourself.
All Dressed Up and Two Places to Go
When your character is torn between two places to live, it can be tough for courts to decide where to send the young character. @scriptsocialwork helps this detailed ask and maybe it can help you too.
Insurance and Supers Through the Roof
So a recent superhero movie trend has been to think about the repercussions of the supers doing their work such as in Captain America: Civil War, but what those movies don’t think about that much is how it affects the common folk moneywise. @scripteconomist gives writers an idea of what one would need to keep in mind for their stories in a super powered universe.
A Brief Overview of the Provinces and Territories of Canada
For those of us who don’t live in the great white north, trying to name the provinces your characters visit can be difficult. @scriptcanuck has provided a quick reference for the McBasics of Canada’s provinces and territories.
I'll Make a Man Out of You
This asker’s character is about to pull a Mulan and pose as a man. The problem is, when your story is set before the invention of stretchy fabrics, binding so the chest is flatter is on the wrong side of dangerous. @scripthistory gives some ideas as to what an author would need to keep in mind for the design of the character’s binder.
Where the Wildflowers Grow
Where can [plant] grow? Though this asker has a specific plant in mind, @scriptflorist provides an answer that helps with most plants if you know what environment it thrives in. There’s even a convenient map with the climate zones!
Dream of a Silver Screen
You have an idea. But it’s not just any idea, it’s an idea for a movie. You know exactly what you want and how long you want it to be.
You aren’t sure how much a page of script equals in movie time. How are you going to do that? @scriptstructure had an asker recently with the exact same question, and the answer should be able to help you too.
The Truth Will Set The Lawyers on Your Tail
@scriptmedic ‘s BS Tropes is back. This time we have truth serum. Guess what, it doesn’t work as well as Hollywood says it does. Funny how Hollywood productions have such huge budgets and can’t do the research to confirm whether this stuff actually works. So read the post. Be informed. Make Hollywood look bad.
Quotes
“You're not a real writer until you're on at least one watchlist.”
- @anauthorandherservicedog ( @scriptservicedogs)
“I'm a trained professional. Just not in this profession.”
- Den ( @scriptaccountant ) not referring to accounting
Ask Box Statuses
@scriptgerman is going to be on hiatus for about 3 weeks because finals are a thing, but the ask box is still open.
@scripteconomist is having a busy time right now, but all waiting asks are at least partly answered and the ask box is still open
@scriptwitchcraft has an empty ask box, so if you have questions, now is a great time to send them in
New Family
We’re still looking for additional moderators for an upcoming blog on writing characters in the publishing industry (authors, publishers, editors, agents, cover artists, proofreaders, book bloggers — the works!) If you’re interested in joining the ScriptX family and have experience in the publishing industry, especially with a Big 5/Big 6 publisher or the art/marketing side of the house, please contact @scriptservicedogs. Please note that this is NOT a blog meant to advise people on actually getting published.
And that’s all for this week. See y’all next week.
