Funky color scheme I know, but I was going for something like old sci if magazines and Lovecraft books.

The Roombabot Diaries
"Even without full scan function, I still had my dark vision filters and my own mapping data, so with the fixed point of the corridor hatch, I could retrace my steps to the ramp. It just looked awkward and stupid because for the first part I had to navigate like a floor-cleaning bot." - Martha Wells, System Collapse (Video and audio description below the cut)
VIDEO ID:
An animated video of Murderbot, in a full environmental suit (featuring a little 'Perihelion' logo on its chest and an opaque helmet).
Murderbot is wandering around a dark space, the sound of its footsteps on the stone floor are audible. It walks in a straight line to the right until it hits a pillar with an audible 'thunk' noise and stops. A grumpy smiley face appears next to it.
It recalibrates, making little chirping calibrating sounds, then turns and moves towards the viewer until it seems to hit the camera (again with a 'thunk' noise and a little frowny smiley face next to it) and recalibrates again.
It turns its back to the viewer and starts walking again, this time seemingly hitting the wall in the back. It recalibrates again, then turns to the right and starts walking again. After a few seconds it stops briefly, two exclamation marks appear next to it along with a beeping noise, then it quickly walks out of frame.

i can't stress enough that outside of this one moment in rogue protocol when murderbot wants to kill a human for betraying its sort-of clients but settles for the next best thing of menacingly hovering a drone in her face for 26 seconds while she's frozen in place by her armor, for the rest of the first four books mb is really only using drones for security purposes and doesn't have the time or inclination to be performing close-range facial analysis:
in ASR it doesn't seem to be all that familiar with drones outside of maybe using them to set a perimeter. it exhibits several other uses of drones as events escalate, but they're all related to protecting itself and its humans and getting intel on EvilSurvey. at no point does it mention watching a human with a drone; it's all "using drones to draw fire" this and "sending drones flying off in the wrong direction as a diversion tactic" that. et cetera.
it has no access to drones whatsoever in AC from what i can tell.
in RP it uses Ship's drones to record conversations between wilken and gerth, but it's not a participant in those conversations and it doesn't even watch them in real time. it also forgoes getting a good look at their weapons via drone because it thinks they would notice. later it takes control of a station drone to watch (from afar) their first meeting with don abene & co., but miki notices the drone and almost catches mb because of it, which freaks it out. then it hacks the combatbots' drones, but other than the aforementioned 26-second intimidation of wilken, it's too busy doing actual security work to use them to look at people.
in ES it accesses drones many times, including to observe its humans, but it only seems to actually control a drone to look at something one time, and only in order to zoom in on a suit logo. so at no point could it conceivably be directing a drone to get up in somebody's face, since it's just piggybacking on drones as they go about their normal business.
it does use cameras to watch people in the first four books, but in a much less obvious way: either it's using fixed cameras that are built into habitats/hoppers/whatever, or it's accessing mobile cameras (suit cams, station drones) but not controlling where those cameras go or what they're pointing at.
it's interesting, because while drones can be startling or intrusive, on the flip side, cameras that don't move don't draw attention to themselves and thus may make it easier to forget you're being watched (plus you have no way of knowing if that particular camera is being monitored at that moment or if it's just recording for later analysis). so in a way, having a drone in your face actively signals to you that mb is paying attention to you. it's making mb's gaze visible in a way it might not otherwise be. this changes the dynamic from "passive surveillance for datamining and threat assessment purposes" to "person actively choosing to pay attention to you in real time". one of these is covert and the other isn't; one of these holds the possibility of interaction and exchange and the other doesn't. maybe it puts a drone in your face to show you it cares.

with all the recent polls relating to shipping and what not, a weird phenomenon i keep noticing is people on here dismissing a queer ship just because it's non-canon (or, god forbid, 'queerbaiting'). to act like the only dynamics worth praise are the ones that are canon is...so weird?? you should be judging them on how well they're written, how compelling they are, etc. and full offense, but there are a ton of non-canon queer ships that will be a 100 times more compelling than whatever bland, underdeveloped 'rep' netflix keeps throwing at us. i don't know when this site will learn how to judge stories on the basis of, you know. good and interesting writing, and not Which Character is Canonically Queer

wedding (x3)
the @schittscreekdrabbleblog word of the week is wedding, and this is technically not within the rules because they are loosely connected, but I did it anyway!
1.
Rachel runs her finger along the scalloped edge of the invitation. It’s a simple thing and only a sample; picking an invitation style was one of the last things they did before Patrick called off the engagement. She held onto it after he left in some misguided hope that he’d find his way back to her. She knows now that he was never hers. It hurts in a way none of the other breakups did, a deep aching in her chest that she’s not sure will ever fully heal.
She sighs heavily as she tosses the invitation in the trash.
2.
Stevie is happy for David, of course she is. Patrick is good for him, and getting married to someone who adores him is all David has ever wanted. But somewhere deep inside is a stubborn, persistent ache. She probes at it like a sore tooth for days until it comes to her.
What if it’d been her?
She knows she and David are better as best friends than they were together. But it doesn’t mean she doesn’t wonder about what could have been.
She’s happy for David, and for Patrick. But there’s a part of her that will always wonder.
3.
Alexis blames her tears on the fact that she can’t remember how many glasses of champagne she’s had, not the way David and Patrick look so happy wrapped up in each other in the golden glow of the reception. If she’s honest, if someone asked, she would have said she’d be married before David. But here he is, incandescently happy while she’s still picking the shattered pieces of her heart off the cafe floor.
What if she never finds someone?
A glass of water slides across the counter. Alexis looks up to see Twyla’s sweet smile.
Maybe she already has.

Curious Village + Diabolical Box Dialogue Scripts
Hi folks!
As part of a project I'm working on, I ended up making a spreadsheet with complete/complete-ish dialogue scripts for PL Curious Village and Diabolical Box:
Tumblr media
If that sounds like something you could use (for searching for specific dialogue lines or whatever else), here's a link to the file.
The file contains word counts per line and a column for counting groups of lines, but you can ignore those if you don't care about them (although if you used them to make graphs, I would love you forever <3 ).
Sources: I used these scripts/walkthroughs (CV link, DB link)--I went with those based on a post I saw that recommended them, although it looks like the OP of that post deleted it, so I'm not going to link it here. My understanding is that those walkthrough scripts feature all or very close to all dialogue for those games, but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong about that.
Also note, the linked file does NOT include the text from the puzzle instructions/hints, although the character dialogue leading into/out of the puzzles is included.

At this point everyone’s probably put this together from various stories but I haven’t posted the stories chronologically so in case anyone thought her coldest strictest phase holds steady by the time of vol. 2 I want to be absolutely clear: DT calls everybody’s shares of the town’s supplies “rations” to give the illusion that it’s all sparing and bureaucratic; it super is not. She will give you extra if she’s worried about you. She will claim something is impossible to swing and then get it anyhow, swearing about what a bad idea it is the entire time. If you ask she will call this ‘clerical error’ but everybody knows DT a. doesn’t make mistakes and b. wuvs them they just don’t say it because she’s like ‘disgusting. i don’t have feelings. i’m trying to Objectively Fix society. how dare you.’
