Hidden Figures #1 (Wake by Richard Serra) || IV.
Tumblr media
I started to accept the possibility that I didn't quite fit any group mold here as a transplant because those molds weren't large enough to accommodate all of me. I've always been difficult to be exactly boxed, easily sorted or slid between figures around me. In my art, in my beliefs and my day to day life...I have complex turns and curves to me and make shapes of many kinds. I am part some things and other parts another, a custom make. Aren't we all? Even so, my not-easily-sorted ways had never seemed to be a barrier to fully connecting with others - until I moved here.
.
In the spaces I'd found myself in, in other cities I'd lived, you and who you were mattered more than the group identity you shared with others. You had common connections and origin stories, but at some point your views and experiences splintered off - but rarely did that change the dynamic of your group or the volume of your voice within it. It wasn't assumed you'd be exactly like the people in whatever group you found yourself in.
.
I was used to the acceptance of newcomers and nuance to a group: Clashing shapes on a canvas, the rowdy, passionate dissonance that came from discourse and teasing jokes among its members - and the understanding that, even with their apparent differences, no one belonged to the scenery any less. There was freedom to be one's full self. No shrinking for fitting. They saw your curves and angles and made room for them, creating a mosaic of people whose ideas and beliefs were brought together by common community.
.
But here in Seattle, it seemed the groups I found myself in and around thrived off their choruses of "Me too", "I feel the same way", of "We all know...", and "I think we can all say that..."s. But with all their scripts for their language, culture, interests, values, and etiquette there seemed to be no script for responses of, "I feel differently", "That's not what I think" or "That working for you doesn't mean it works for me". It felt like if I was out of step with the rest of the group, I was the one making the wrong curve; when my different arcs and waves, my different experiences, beliefs and existences appeared, an air of defensiveness entered the room or a quick silence hung in the air after they noticed me shifting. No probing, no pondering, no jokes or pokes. Just a return to the forms the group's always known, back to the angles by which the group abides.
.
I've seen and appreciated the ways in which the Seattle area prides itself on its tight-knit communities. But as a perpetual outsider, I've also seen how its groups seem to sing their choruses so loudly it's easy for them to tune out voices of difference - to not recognize a different note being sung. Either newcomers know the chorus or they just don't sing along - otherwise, when they sing a different verse, everyone seems to notice.
.
I've lived on both sides of the lines I've seen these groups draw in the sand. I've lived on both sides of a lot of lines. But it's been so long since I've felt I had to "fit in", slide cleanly into a mold, to make meaningful connections instead of feeling I was accepted the way I wholly am, curves fitting in or not. Would it really benefit me to start doing that now? Reduce myself to just one of my many aspects? Temper my complexities and angles just to fit the Seattle spaces I've found myself in?
.
I could give into the tight-knit sameness around me, do my best to mimic the shapes and movements and people around me...or I could break free of the idea that the only way to succeed in the landscape I found myself in was to fit neatly into it.

She looks strong because she is strong. She is also sad, she is also joyful.
She grieves in one breath the hardships of the world, and breathes out the calm and love she has to give.
And when she has none to give, she breathes in the love that someone else has offered her, an offering that is simple and also enormous.
She goes about her day, reapplies her lipstick when it's faded, and smiles.

Push/Pull does a lot for the indie art scene in Seattle. This is one of their annual campaigns to support their non-profit programs.
Consider donating (and getting your company to match it) to help them continue their mission!
Push/Pull is hard to define. It usually comes down to "art space." We're a cooperative business with a nonprofit programming division.
To further our mission to support sustainable careers for artists and to connect artists with the community, we have taken over the programming of Ballard Night Out and Greater Ballard Arts, they're now Bal-Art. Push/Pull is a home for all artists in Ballard to find free support and promotion.
For 2022 we're excited to welcome back in-person events. Bal-Art's Third Thursdays promote art events, artists and venues year-round. We believe that when the arts are supported in the community, everyone benefits.
Push/Pull continues our longstanding tradition of free community programming with our free Teen Art Program. We now meet three times a week, thanks to the support of donations by people in the community like you. We have 8 weeks of summer programming planned and will be back with at least 3 days of meetings for the 2022-23 school year. Learn more on our website!

Hidden Figures #4 (The Eagle by Alexander Calder) || I.
Tumblr media
I didn't originally plan to interact with Alexander Calder's "Eagle" but as photographer @skyclad.studio and I came upon it and its spot on the hill, the sun was making its way up the hill as well, hitting the sculpture just right and inviting us to it.
.
With one of the goals of 'Hidden Figures' being to challenge myself to interact with a sculpture's scene, using my body to mirror or contrast its shapes, I saw "The Eagle" as a delightful challenge.
.
With its blunt lines and angles and giant-like stature, what could little old me do to stand up to and alongside the monumental sculpture? I took notice of its sharp lines and sought to match or oppose them - show it I could be tall, strong and monumental too.
Tumblr media
But ultimately - I'm a human: I fold and I curl; I wave and I bend. I could show the Eagle that I was strong like it was or I could just flow around it: Show it what it's like to be made of skin and bone. Show it - and remind myself - that one doesn't always have to be biggest presence in the room, make the largest gestures to make an impact. Sometimes it's the little things that make all the difference. Similarly to my interaction with "Wake" by Richard Serra, I let small touches make the biggest impressions: A pointed toe, intentional extensions, arcs and waves stick out like many paintings and figure drawings before me would have their subjects do to add an extra visual interest element to the capture.

Besides, allowing oneself to be its most natural - accepting ones truest state - can allow it to shine like the sun rising up over a hill on a summer morning. And for all the hiding and tucking I did amongst the other scenes in the park, there was wasn't much room to hide around this piece. It was a giant stage for me to show it, show onlookers, show Seattle, show anyone my truest self.

I didn't originally plan to interact with The Eagle, but as many of our random encounters prove over time, it's very possible that the opportunity presented itself for a reason. As many pieces of art do, it has something to show me and I'm grateful it waited patiently for just the right time to beckon us to it and deliver its silent message.
