A lot of my collecting of WWII stuff was inspired by Medal of Honor: Frontline. I was playing it one day the summer I had my first job and I wondered while playing how hard it would be to find a helmet from WWII.

After acquiring said helmet, I set about putting together the uniform of this little knockoff G.I. Joe I had bought when I was a freshman in High School, dubbed "pocket Jimmy Patterson"

Pocket Jimmy Patterson there is a Sergeant in the 101st and was sold as a D-Day soldier but he's actually dressed for Market Garden.

I landed on paratroopers in part because of pocket Jimmy Patterson, and in part because I like airplanes. From there, I went with the 101st over the 82nd because I already thought they had the best patch, I liked the playing card insignia painted on the side of the helmet, the number 101 is aesthetically pleasing, and I didn't know about any other airborne units.

I say all that because if you know anything about WWII collecting and especially re-enacting you know that elite units are dramatically over-represented and for the U.S. nobody more than the 101st, and this can be blamed almost exclusively on Band of Brothers, a show I had not even seen when I landed on the 101st.

How bad is it?

Well, by way of illustration, as a stress response to the final stages of my dissertation I've been retreating into buying WWII paratrooper stuff again, and I was questioning whether I hadn't better go with another unit this time. I had a great great uncle killed in the Philippines in WWII who was in the 11th Airborne so that's an obvious candidate, but of course if you want to stick to Europe and fighting Nazis your options are the 82nd, 101st, or 17th. Of those, the 17th only really got into the war in 1945 and if you want to do Normandy, as some 90% of re-enactments do, then you're between the 82nd and the 101st.

The 82nd has a much longer history than the 101st and, objectively, and I mean this with all implied asterisks and am speaking as though I were a twelve year old who does not know better, the 82nd is cooler, the inferior number/patch notwithstanding.

So I was on a website that is well-regarded for selling WWII militaria and they have a section for patches and I was doing some comparison of original WWII-era divisional patches. The cheapest 101st Airborne patch from WWII this guy has for sale is $175, most of them hovering closer to $300, and some in the $600 range.

11th, 17th, and 82nd patches are in the $50 range.

When I still did re-enacting as the 101st, I remember talking to some of the guys who were disappointed with the rather low "authenticity" standards of our unit (always something of a joke when a considerable number of G.I. re-enactors are in their 40s-60s and dramatically overweight), especially considering that the 101st Airborne are one of the most cartoonishly over-documented units in WWII, for whom reproductions of everything are widely available, and so there's really no excuse not to have your uniform and equipment more or less 100% correct.

Sure enough, trying to do a little research into the 82nd to see what that pool would be like, the resources are shockingly slim. The 101st had two combat jumps in WWII, Normandy and Holland. The 82nd jumped into Sicily, Salerno, Normandy, southern France, and Holland. They have a much longer combat record and are, comparatively speaking, almost totally neglected by idiots like me who are into WWII.

I am having a hard time severing the internal connection to 101

The Bridge to Nowhere or so it was called when it was first proposed and constructed. The Astoria-Megler Bridge with Astoria city, Oregon behind. I took this shot from the Washington side using my long lens. I think it gives an interesting perspective from about 5 miles away across the mouth of the Columbia river. The complete bridge is about 4 miles (6.6 km) long. That includes the impressive high parts as well as the lower section which makes up most of the length. At 1,232 ft (376m), the main span you see is the longest truss span bridge in the USA and 2nd longest in the world. Longer than that I think they tend to build suspension bridges. The high portion clears about 200 ft (60m) above the water for shipping. Though in my searching I couldn't find how high the bridge tops out at. The other thing I wonder is 200ft above the water - when? So 200ft above average river height which I'm sure has tidal affect? Mean Sea Level? High tide? Inquiring minds want to know! :) The bridge to nowhere came from the fact that there aren't any major cities on the north / Washington side. But these days it handles about 7000 cars a day which is far more than they expected would use this 2 lane bridge. It completed US highway 101 running roughly along the US Pacific coast from Los Angeles, CA to Olympia, WA. One of the more popular major scenic drives in the country. We took this route home one time just for fun. It certainly isn't the shortest or fastest way home (depending on where you started from of course), but it is one of the prettier paths to wander. . Week 5: Battalion of Brothers

Another weekend, another thrilling battle report from Herosand V!

Game Setup:

We've reached 600 points! Normal detachment rules now apply, so I've expanded to create a battalion:

Our Heroes

We have Captain Incusator in Grav Armor. I've increased our intercessor count up to 15 for three squads. You are all of course familiar with Reginald, our Dreadnought. Finally, we've added Lieutenant Marculus, wielding a master-crafted stalker bolt rifle. Since I now have eight CP to play with, I've spent two to make Incusator a Chapter Master.

The mission type was Secure and Control.

My Narrative:

After word reached back to Medusa of the difficulties the Iron Hands had faced, they were bolstered with reinforcements, with the third and sixth squad filling in. Captain Incusator was given an updated list of the latest in tactics and strategy and promoted to Chapter Master. Now suitably fortified, it was time to march across Herosand V and take back the planet from the vile forces of... Well, pretty much everyone else. There had been a lot of confusion and fog of war, and now even Imperium forces were fighting each other.

Soon, their mettle and metal would both be tested.

Tanks for the Memories

I got to pick the deployment, and I picked spearhead. My idea was that I didn't have much anti-armor and I'd need to get the dreadnought and chapter master up where they could open the tank like a can opener. Armor is honestly my biggest weakness right now, and I'll probably struggle with it until I get to 800 points at the earliest. We each had an objective in our backline. Mine I had in some nice convenient ruins that partly blocked line of sight. I parked a group of intercessors on it (just out of sight to the right) and deployed the rest of my forces with an eye to moving them up the board. He parked his mortars behind a magic box and set of the rest of his gunline.

Ignore the strip of tape. Previous rounds were 2'x4'. We're now playing on 3'x4' sections of table to accommodate our larger armies.

I seem to remember there being guardsmen here.

Two rounds of shooting saw all of his troops gone. By this point, though, my dread was down to about half health and I was starting to realize that getting all the way down to the other end of the field was easier said than done. However, I also realized that I had first blood. So long as I could keep control of my objective, and not let him kill my warlord, I'd win on points at the end of the game. If the tournament was tracking how many points people got, I might have considered keeping up the fight, but as it was, only victory mattered. I had a near-guaranteed shot, so long as I could get my army into cover and out of range of most of his guns.

"Why is the dreadnought ticking?"

The bullgryns held me in combat just long enough to help him get another round of shooting. My dreadnought died finally went down to the tank commander's weapons. I probably should have used Vengeance of the Machine Spirit to give him one more round of damage on the enemy. I didn't get my stratagem cards out, and I ended up with four CP left at the end of the game unspent because I kept forgetting what I could do, aside from Duty Eternal to buff my dread for a phase.

However, by this point, I had gotten the Tank Commander down to just a few wounds left, so its movement wasn't up to chasing me all the way down the board. It was now time to make the march back to my objective. You can see where I have my intercessors parked in a cozy little hut with the objective.

Snug as a Bug in a Rug

I was down to four intercessors in three squads, my lieutenant, and my captain left. I was about to have my army either in cover or behind boxes. So long as he didn't take out my captain by the end of the game, I was going to be a point ahead. We were starting up round six. I would have at most two more rounds to survive his mortar fire.

Then one of my intercessors managed an extremely lucky shot and took out his tank commander. He rolled a six on the explosion, and it also took out his astropath and hurt his company commander. At that point, he conceded the game and we shook hands.

I'm starting to learn to think a bit more tactically. At the start, I felt my best route to victory lay in getting into melee with the tank commander. But once I realized I had the advantage on points, I went for the surer path.

I will say that the Chapter Master was pretty clutch. Being able to reroll all hits was a lifesaver at points. The rerolling of 1s on wound rolls was helpful too, though not quite as clutch.

I also need to remember to use the auxiliary grenade launchers. Frak grenades are better against armor than stalker bolt rifles. When I can, I need to remember that I have them.

Iron and Steel

My opponent chose the deployment zone. He put his flayed ones into deep strike, hid his warriors behind some LOS-blocking terrain, and kept his overlord with his lychguard. He went first, and he started moving his lychguard and overlord on the far side of the field. He moved his warriors forward, putting as many as possible on top of the building in front of them. They managed to take out an intercessor, but with most of them still behind cover, he wasn't able to do much.

My dread went and took out eleven of his 12-necron squad. I was also able to take out all but one of his lychguard with stalker bolt fire. The remaining warrior in the squad skedaddled in the morale round. The other warrior squad would stay in cover for the rest of the game, around his objective.

Warriors from the Dark

On his next turn, he brought his flayed ones out of deep strike. And here I made a mistake that screwed over my opponent. I used Auspex Scan and played it on my dreadnought, who promptly took out the entire unit. I missed that Auspex Scan can only affect infantry. It likely didn't change much, but it would have at least kept the gaming going another turn or so, depending on what he ended up charging. I brought it up to him after the game, and he was fairly cool about it. We're both learning the rules of the game. I'll remember next time.

His lychguard regenerated two models, and he used a special ability to move his warlord and the lychguard into my backline, charging me. The lychguard made it into combat and took out all but one of the intercessors in that squad. I removed all of the models near his lychguard to get out of melee range. We both forgot about the consolidate part of the fight phase, so the lychguard ended up getting shot up when my turn came.

Hmm...

And now he only had his remaining warriors behind cover, and his warlord.

Hmm!

With his warlord dispatched, he conceded and we called it.

I feel pretty bad about the rules I forgot here. I need to read my stratagems more clearly so that I don't make errors, especially not ones that give me such an advantage as forgetting the Auspex Scan limitation. I also keep forgetting the pile in/fight/consolidate order. In this case, we both forgot, but if he'd remembered, removing the models as I did would have given me no benefit (especially since I took out my sergeant to try and build space).

Still, I'm looking up less than I was last week, and far less than the week before. I'm starting to get better at grasping the fundamentals. I just need to get the details of my army down.

We're now halfway through the League. I'm 6 for 8 fights and standing at #11 in the league. I'm currently at halfway through painting my 800 point increase, and then just three units to get me to 1000. It's very exciting, and I can't wait to play some of these units!

So there’s a line in the queue of my ride where Hagrid is saying “I reckon today’s going to be quite memorable” whether we find a unicorn or not.

I remember hearing that audio for the first time. Sitting right inside our pre show room waiting for the techs and creative to finish hanging some cobwebs and listening to the audio in the queue just outside. I heard it about 500 times in that one shift and I’ve been working there for two months so I’ve heard that line of audio more times than I could possibly count. But there was something about hearing it for the first time as I watched everything around me be built and created, this world I’ve only dreamt about literally coming to life right before my eyes. And hearing “I reckon today’s going to be quite memorable” I couldn’t shake the feeling that that one line of queue audio was going to represent everything about this experience for me. And I was right. I walk that section of our queue just about everyday and everytime I speak the lines along with it. It’s a little ritual, it makes me smile.

In the theme park industry, when you’re trying to make working in a theme park your career, it’s always considered a really big deal if you’re on the opening team for soemthing. I cant tell you how many times I’ve heard how great a career move this is for me or how much this will boost my resume. And then opening something for the Wizarding world? It’s even bigger. Potter openings are unlike any openings in the theme park industry. Hogsmeade opened and we shut down interstate 4, a whole section of Florida’s highway just shut down. People circled around universal all night and morning waiting for the parking garages to open on Thursday. We had an 6 hour wait by the time I clocked into work... at 6am. Before we’d even opened the park up to guests. We had 600 some people apply to work here and only 150 of us were hired, being a part of that small number is such an honor I can’t fully express how much it means to me.

It’s no easy feat. We all joke around and say “I survived opening weekend!!!” Or “I opened an attraction, a Potter attraction!!!! And didn’t die!!!!” But it really is not in the slightest bit simple. It’s going down for weather and technical things because it’s a new ride we’d working out the kinks. It’s 10 hour waits and angry dehydrated guests who just want to experience the magic too. It’s high stress it’s hectic it’s so much happening all st once and it doesn’t slow down, not even for a single second. It’s crazy weird hours like getting to work at 5am when the park doesn’t open for another 4 hours. It’s working third shift from 11:15pm to 7am and watching the world around you come alive while you’re also trying so hard not to fall asleep and instead watch the technical team move a ride vehicle an inch every thirty minutes. It’s mass confusion and miscommunication and frustration and the biggest worry and panic and fear that you’ll do something wrong.

And it’s the most rewarding experience.

It’s watching “students” come back from “their care of magical creatures lesson with Hagrid” crying as they step out of the sidecar because they hadn’t experienced something so magical. It’s making friends with people in your team and in tech services and in creative and the animatronics folks who basically lived in one of our show scenes for 3 months. It’s sitting in the child swap room crying over Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire for the 800th time. It’s cheering each other and supporting each other and weird jokes and laughs. It’s happiness and joy and magic that you’re creating. It’s being a part of something so much bigger than yourself.

It’s quoting the pre show and our queue audio so often that you turn it into art (picture one).

It’s holding a sign for an hour and a half in 101° weather (picture two).

It’s not being able to remember who’s at the lockers 2 position because everyone’s helping out that we’re really all this big clump of a team that’s taken on all the responsibilities at once (picture three).

It’s explaining to guests that yes we really are at a six hour wait and personally? I think it’s well worth the wait (picture four).

It’s a reawakening of magic.

It’s remembering what it feels like to be even a little happy. Finding a joy that you thought maybe was gone and lost forever. Soemthing you couldn’t get back. And then suddenly you’re sitting in the middle of the ride track somewhere watching an animatronic move for an hour and the music comes on suddenly and Hagrid’s voice pops is out of nowhere and you scream because it startles you and then you cry. You cry because oh, this is what happy feels like. I guess Luna was right, the things we lose do have a way of coming back to us in the end.

This is a really long post. And it’s very ramble-y. But wow if Hagrid wasn’t 100% right. It was quite memorable. And I’m so beyond thankful that I get to be a part of this team that makes this magic that creates this joy. Thanks for bringing me happiness again project 942. Thanks for reminding me what it’s all about Hagrid. I owe you one.

On the other hand, the individual mandate has been repealed, so we’ll see what effect that has on the marketplace. Want to start doing photography, but don't know where to begin? This photography 101 is the best place for a few tips and tricks to help you as you begin your journey as a photographer.

Firstly, there are 2 main parts of a picture:

Subject

Surrounding

The relationship between the subject and surrounding makes a better picture. A good picture has to have a sense of context. If you feel the photo you clicked isn't good enough, you simply aren't close enough.

A light subject should be captured on a dark background and a dark subject should be captured on a light background, unless the photographer is trying to create a certain effect.

A PHOTOGRAPHER'S DIET

In order to take the best possible photograph, you should try and follow the photographer's diet.

D : Design

A sense of geometry, like a shape or some lines

I   : Information

By looking at the picture, someone should be able to understand what is going on

E  : Emotion

You should feel something when you look at the picture

T  : Time

LEADING LINES

To attract someones attention to a particular part of your picture, try and find leading lines in nature. Leading lines are lines in a photograph that lead you to the subject.

For example, in this picture, the leading lines which are made by the mowed grass- lead you right to the house, which is the part of the photo the photographer wants you to focus on.

THE RULE OF THIRDS

In photography, a picture is divided into 9 different sections by an imaginary 3 X 3 grid like the one shown below.

If the subject of the photograph is on one of the lines of the centre box, or where it is marked, it is more likely to catch someone's attention.

As you can see in the image above, the rule of thirds has been used perfectly. If you want to use the rule of thirds on a daily basis when taking a picture, simply turn the camera on your phone to gridmode and you will have your very own 3 X 3 grid on the screen.

A FEW OTHER DSLR BASICS

Exposure Value (EV)

Changes the brightness/exposure. Negative (-) is darker and positive (+) is brighter.

Should ideally be kept at 0. The negative (-) setting gets really nice pictures of buildings etc.

ISO

Sensitivity of the camera. The more the brightness the lesser ISO needed and vice versa. The lower the better. Set it to Auto. In regular daylight, it should be approximately 100.

Panning

When you have the subject fixed and the background is blurry. Set at a lower shutter speed like 1/4th of a second. Lower lighting conditions necessary. S mode: shutter priority.

Continuous Shooting

If taking a picture for example someone jumping, use continuous shooting mode.

Bubble Bursting

If you want something like a bubble bursting, use a very high shutter speed like 500 or 600. Or a continuous shooting mode. For a crisp photo with a high shutter speed, you need a bright light

PHOTOLUMINESCENT POWDER INTRODUCTION

Photoluminescent powder, also known as pigment, is a non-toxic, non-radioactive new environmentally friendly alkaline earth aluminate pigment. Most of the visible or UV light will charge the pigment particles (excitation). The photo luminescent pigment then releases energy for 10 to 24 hours in the form of visible light (which glows in the dark). The photographic light-emitting pigments provide duty-cycle operation with a very high ratio of glow time to the desired charging time. Luminous intensity (brightness) and afterglow time than the traditional ZnS (zinc sulfide) or usually sold retail store products more than 30 times higher.

Photoluminescent Powder Characteristics

Safe for normal uses as it contains no radioactive or toxic materials.

Long glow time. Compared with previous photo storage materials, it has up to 50 times longer emission (glow) time.

High initial brilliance. Initial luminance of up to 40,000 mcd/m2.

High durability. Long shelf life if the crystalline structure is not damaged.

Outdoor usage. Suitable for outdoor usage as it does not suffer luminance reduction even when placed under a 300-watt high-pressure mercury lamp for 1000 hours.

Stable Chemical Reaction. Not-encapsulated powder is stable as it is resistant to most anhydrous chemicals, both organic and inorganic. However, it will decompose into metal oxide and lose its luminance when brought into contact with water. Waterproof powder should be used for high water content mediums such as kids water paint. Most resin, epoxy, silicone and acrylic paints can be used with our not-encapsulated pigment and brighter pigment.

Temperature Resistance:

High Temperatures. The performance and brilliance remain stable under temperature of nearly 1100 degrees Fahrenheit (600℃).

No decrease in performance even when tested at temperatures of -40 degrees Fahrenheit (-40℃). High durability.

How bright are these glow products?

Many photoluminescent pigments and products manufacturers refer to the extinction time of their products, which is defined as the time required for afterglow to be reduced to 1 masb (0.032 mcd / m2, or about 100 times the human perception limit). In practice, it is very difficult, unless your eyes are completely dark to adapt, and you are in a completely dark environment. For practical purposes, the brightness of one to two millimeters per square meter is a more appropriate limit for life safety applications, even if a smoke-free environment is assumed. Therefore, the zinc sulfide product may take 30 to 45 minutes after its excitation source is extinguished. On the other hand, the afterglow of strontium aluminate products can be seen for days or even longer. All PhotoLuminescent Powder are based on strontium aluminate. At the other end of the time scale, strontium aluminate products can provide surprising initial afterglow. For example, four inches of square material from the magazine page can provide enough light, at least in the first minute. In addition, the microprism retroreflector and other brightness enhancement techniques can increase the brightness of the material several times.

Are Photoluminescent Exit and Egress Signs OSHA Compliant?

Most people can figure out how to exit a building in normal circumstances. But add fear and an emergency, and normal tasks suddenly become difficult. Darkness after losing power and a fire’s smoke make everything worse. This is why it’s so essential to make egress—the act of escaping a building—simple and easy. And glow in the dark exit signs that are approved by OSHA are one way of lighting the way to safety.

In this article, we look at the requirements from OSHA, NFPA, and the IBC for the listing and performance of photoluminescent signs. These mandates include the need for proper light sources, glow duration, and legibility from a distance.

Effective means of egress are described and regulated by multiple model building and safety codes. The National Fire Protection Association’s NFPA 101: Life Safety Code (2018 edition) is one key document. Another is the International Building Code (IBC, 2018 edition), which has been incorporated into the building codes of every U.S. state.

Proper signage is a key part of emergency preparedness, which is why you see light-up “EXIT” signs everywhere. Smaller egress markers, which often have arrows indicating direction and pictographs of a running man, are also common. These give directions in confusing parts of a building or where exit signs are far apart. All signs have to work well in the dark and without main power, so NFPA 101 and IBC both have specific requirements for backup illumination.

Photoluminescent signs (aka “glow-in-the-dark signs”) are a useful technology for exit and egress signage. They glow without a dedicated power source. Instead, they absorb the energy of light from normally well-lit surroundings—often a particular wavelength of light—and release it over time as a glow. The brightness of their glow diminishes after the charging light source is removed, but glow in the dark signs that are NFPA-, IBC-, and OSHA-compliant remain visible long enough to get people to safety.

Photoluminescent signs can be used as egress markers and exit signs as long as they meet the necessary performance standards. Indeed, many egress markers (being smaller and more common than exit signs) must be self-luminescent—electric illumination won’t do.

PVC Signage

Let’s be clear and as non-technical as possible in the description of PVC signs. The chemicals and the molecular makeup are the same as the pipe referred to in the opening of this article. The best way to help in differentiating the two as that the signs are more lightweight and porous, meaning full of pores. How does this translate to what you want to know?
