The Old GMMTV Challenge: The Master Post and Explainer

Hello! Welcome to The Old GMMTV Challenge (OGMMTVC), my personal syllabus and journey through the most important, and/or impactful, and/or seminal of Boys Love (BL)/Series Y dramas from Thailand.

I started watching Thai BL series in 2022 with the airing of KinnPorsche. From there, I dallied with shows that were referenced across Tumblr -- but I didn't dig into learning about the genre as a whole until I watched 2021-22's Bad Buddy, and was thoroughly moved by it in countless ways.

I subsequently learned that Bad Buddy was, in large part, constructed to communicate with tropes and expectations established previously by the genre. In order to get to a point where I could appreciate Bad Buddy in all of its historic glory, I therefore decided to start from the top -- to watch Thai BLs in chronological order so as to help me better understand the tentacles of this young genre. I was also impacted by a post from a BL Tumblr lifer, @absolutebl, who talked in 2022 about current shows by the GMMTV network, the biggest producer of BL dramas in Thailand, that were answering for mistakes made in the early Thai BL days.

Bad Buddy is a GMMTV show -- but in order to learn fully about the genre, I've created a syllabus of shows and movies that spans well outside the GMMTV network and sphere of influence. In the spring of 2023, I crowdsourced information about Thai BLs from the INCREDIBLE BL community on Tumblr, and came up with the syllabus below.

This syllabus is ever changing, especially as this young genre (which was arguably born in 2014 with the airing of Love Sick) continues to explore itself outside of its male-and-male romance genre boundaries, by centering women and/or non-binary individuals, and even leaving romance behind for horror, suspense, mystery, crime, and more.

Besides watching dramas on this syllabus, I'm also in the process of reading English-language books and articles about the Thai BL genre and its influences in Thailand and across Asia on queer and non-queer communities, as well as on the most marketed-to BL audience in young women. If you're looking to learn more about BL, this is but one resource to use. There's an incredible community of bloggers here with vastly more knowledge than me about the history of this genre. This is only my path, and I encourage you to explore the corners of Tumblr to create your own Thai BL journey!

10 Favorite Moments of Snark in BL

This one came is as an ask from the lovely @solitaryandwandering and there are tons of options so I just picked some of mine and labeled them top 10. I reserve the right to change my mind if a remember better.  

Quite a few of these came from truly terrible BLs, I wonder if that has to do with me remembering them. Like they stood out as moments of delightful charm in a sea of sewage? 

1. Just talk!

Ae getting annoyed with TinCan in A Chance At Love. 

Of course it’s MAME first, but the idea of her using one of her most popular characters (whom she fucked over) to criticize miscommunication as a narrative driver (which is her fucking calling card) was just the ironic poop version of a chef’s kiss. (Sorry, I don’t know how else to put it.) 

2. Saucing out of jealousy 

Let’s just get MAME out of the way, shall we? Type (in TharnType) is an absolute banger at the pithy quip in a very agro way and I love a lot of his lines. I mean calling your lover “crybaby” when you finally tell him you love him? Epic snark. Also the “you can finally stop complaining about us” to Techno is so good. 

But my personal favorite, hands sown, is the throwing a sauce bottle. Talk about product placement. (Although said senior’s snarky, “It’s fun to see a big baby agitated” about Type, was also pretty darn great.) 

3. I’m so gay 

In Rainbow Prince, the fact that Art’s focused pursuit is patently obvious and his subordinates are still careful about it was just really funny to me. It reminded me of my youth when friends got surprised when I came out. Don’t get me wrong, my coming out was perfectly serviceable at the time, but also the ones who were surprised I was like... 

4. Ate the phonebook

Bright in SOTUS (played by Off) is a wonderfully snarky character. I love the way he is self deprecating about being a bad student, even in front of his juniors, and the time he leads them in prayer? So funny. 

But my favorite is his one shot “Did he eat the national register” when Kong is showing off his memory for names in one of the hazing sequences.

Like serious moment of scripted brilliance. 

Ah me, back in the days when most Thai BLs had really good scripts.... 

5. Goodnight, you fucker

Kao’s fandi-way in the Kiss series. 

This is a linguistic one. It’s just I already had grocked the notion of fandi na as being a cute thing couples use with each other (kind of like “sweet dreams, please?”) to see Kao make this super rude when Pete is begging him for it, is so much THEM, their dynamic, it’s particularly snarky and on character. 

Also, you know me, i had to pick a linguistic one. 

6. Rome getting his own back

Rome in Puppy Honey is such a sweet soft character but also so much owning his own identity, and so steady about it. It was just really fun to see him get one up on Pick. 

Even if they both know it’s actually a compliment. 

Also should out to Porsche’s moment of quip, “I enjoy this scene a little too much” when he catches his bestie rolling around in paint with cute boy. 

7. Invitation? 

Tian actually has quite a few moments of snark in Tale of a Thousand Stars. (”You know how to sweet talk now?’). But honestly this is a phrase I use constantly IRL so I was just happy to see it show up in a Thai BL. 

8. Just alpha bitch bitching it up 

Look is this level of confrontation actually considered snark? I don’t know but Miriam’s defense of Chon in Tonhon Chonlatee is epic. Top level. It’s a real pleasure to watch a female bestie take out an evil femme fatale machine-gun style.

Yes there are others, the bffs (best female friends) in Together With Me and Dark Blue Kiss spring to mind. 

9. Calling out the industry moments 

There are quite a few of these, and a BL that is already bad and full of tropes has to be careful because they are reviewing themselves badly. And yet they do it anyway. This example comes from one of this year’s worst, My Secret Love: 

Our Days has 

“Can I love you, my tsundere” 

“This year so many Y series came out”

“I think the script writers are at fault” 

“Your acting skills suck”

all of which come off as more rich and inappropriate than snark in such a terrible show. 

It’s not always bad show tho.

Cherry Blossoms After Winter scene card calling out the “only one bed” trope. 

And in on of the Taiwanese BLs there is a moment where a side character tells on of the leads that “tsundere is so out of fashion” but I can’t remember which show. 

10. Seme subscription service 

Best of the best (IMHO) comes from Korea, who generally specializes in earnest, not snark. But... 

Semantic Error is one of my favorite BL’s because the two leads are nearly entirely comprised of snark. SangWoo’s “if my heart wasn’t beating I’d be dead” was perfection, since it also takes a common trope to account.  

And when JaeYoung is grouchy and says "No lettuce, eat perilla leaves instead” I bark laughed. Also the “oops my hand slipped” after he shot that dart at the drunk asshole in the pub. Both of these also involve physical comedy moments, so they aren’t strictly just snark they're visual gags but still? *kiss kiss kiss* 

But I had to pick seme subscription service as my favorite moment of snark from this series. Because it is both of them, snipping back and forth. 

And that’s it. That’s my top 10. 

Other good ones?

KinnPorsche Pete has a few the time at the table with the minor family and the time in chains when he’s reading a book.

Most of Team’s responses to Win in Until We Meet Again. from “You’re so picky” to “Don’t even think about it.” 

Half of what Pond says in Love By Chance. 

All of what Pure says in My Gear and Your Gown. 

I don’t love Theory of Love but Third’s internal dialogue (when he’s not whining and pining) and his occasionally take downs are pretty darn great.

Adachi’s internal reactions to Kurosawa’s thoughts in Cherry Magic, especially after they are dating. “Everything is so mushy.” 

Akoi’s internal dialogue and self criticism snark in My Love Mix Up. 

TangYi’s “too soft” in H3: Trapped. 

Noh’s “Fine, yes” at the end of Love Sick. Not a snarky character in general, just a wise and sweet one, but at the end, yes, snark. 

NamGoong in Light On Me, the sweetest side character of snark. 

Pretty much all of Mob’s thoughts and dialogue in Absolute BL.

Da Un's dream about being happy with Si Won. Da Un had just lied and hurt Si Won and was trying to work out what he had done so wrong. In his dream his parents are actually home for once and then he meets Si Won in the street outside his house. They have a sweet bus ride, wonder through a park, share a beautiful kiss, and then Si Won tells Da Un he loves him. They never show Da Un waking up but the next day it was clear it was a dream because things were still bad between him and Si Won (Blueming).

Amagi's wet dream about Takara. They're in a room with a plastic like wall and it's all grainy and Takara has Amagi pressed against the fake wall, they kiss, and Takara whispers "Touch mine too" in Amagi's ear and then Amagi wakes up. It's very on brand for a teenage high school boy who just entered into his first serious relationship to have a dream like that. (Takara-kun to Amagi-kun).

Gii dreams about Takumi after they break-up. When Gii returns to their boarding school from summer break he's acting as if he doesn't know Takumi so Takumi promptly breaks up with him. Gii has a very simple dream about Takumi standing at his bedroom looking out the window. He's bathed in sunlight, a soft breeze is blowing the curtains around, and Takumi is smiling very warmly. It's a very soft dream that showed that Gii really did love Takumi and had his reasons for behaving so coldly (Takumi-kun Series 3).

Rome dreams about getting intimate with P'Pick in the shower. Rome has a full on dream that is essentially foreplay with his boyfriend in the shower. Well I don't think they were calling each other boyfriends at that point but yea, they were touching very sensually and the whole thing was in slow motion. It wasn't a sleeping dream, but a daydream (Senior Secret Love: Puppy Honey 2).

Shu Yi dreams of a fond memory with Shi De. He dreams about a time where Shi De is lovingly poking him in the nose in an attempt to wake him for class. It can't even be considered a sweet dream because present Shu Yi is struggling with seeing Shi De again after being ghosted for FIVE YEARS. Chisoo's nightmare about being bullied as a teen. Chisoo has an awful nightmare about being jumped in a bathroom by some rich boys when he was younger. Not only did they beat him up and give him swirlie, but one of them actually peed on him! It was pretty fucked up. I'll never forget it (Long Time No See).

On Generations in GMMTV

I’ve always thought of GMMTV shows as being separated into certain generations. You know how there’s a certain old vibe you get while watching He’s Coming to Me (2019) that you definitely don’t get watching Midnight Museum (2023)? I used to think that I could just leave it at “Obviously the brand is getting better at production as the years pass by.” But no. Of course I couldn’t. I had to get technical.

So here we are. This is my theory on the four (and continuing) generations of GMMTV series, mostly BL of course.

TIMELINE

Generation 0: 2013-2015. GMMTV isn’t very popular and doesn’t have many actors. Also, they haven’t produced a single BL show yet.

Generation 1: 2016-2018. GMMTV has become popular with the boom of classic BL shows like SOTUS (2016), Senior Secret Love: Puppy Honey (2016), and Kiss Me Again (2018). Meaning to say, this is the generation that created the popularity of what is still known today as the Holy Trinity: KristSingto, OffGun, and TayNew. This generation is capped off with the first season of Our Skyy (2018), which has episodes dedicated to these three, FrankDrake from ’Cause You’re My Boy (2018), and PluemChimon from My Dear Loser: Edge of 17 (2017).

Generation 2: 2019-2020. A little bit of a Dark Ages for GMMTV, especially in terms of BL. No massive hits (except 2gether [2020], Theory of Love [2019], Dark Blue Kiss [2019], and maybe, just maybe Tonhon Chonlatee [2020]). This is why I believe there wasn’t an Our Skyy season for Gen-2. Many Gen-3 BL stars are doing straight dramas right now. You might also recognize this generation as Nanon’s emo-schoolboy era (Blacklist [2019], The Gifted: Graduation [2020], The Leaked [2020]). Production abilities also skyrocket (see the difference between Dark Blue Kiss and Kiss Me Again).

Generation 3: 2021–present. Anyone can tell you that GMMTV in 2021 (at least for BL) was vastly different than GMMTV in 2020. Especially when you look at 2021’s lineup: A Tale of a Thousand Stars (2021), Bad Buddy (2021), Not Me (2021), etc. Even straight dramas were thriving that year with F4 Thailand: Boys Over Flowers (2021) and 55:15 Never Too Late (2021). It’s also a lot more racy recently (Mama Gogo [2022], The Jungle [2023], Only Friends [2023]) and finally gives girls some spotlight. GMMTV produces more and better in this generation, and (very arguably) their best BLs and flagship actors are encapsulated in Our Skyy 2 (2023).

Looking at the past few dates, it seems like we’ll be entering a new generation next year. Shows to look forward to in (presumably) Generation 4 are: Beauty Newbie (2024), Cherry Magic (A TayNew series!! After all this time!!), and one (two?) BL series starring Gemini and Fourth.

Getting ready for our sky 2 I recently watched atos and claw and now have such a longing for moonlight chicken. And I watched the eclipse. I’m much happier and more impressed with this portion of the gmmtv bl ouvre. And ofc looking forward to seeing what Aof does this with series too. I guess to make this a question and not just rambling. What do you rank all the aired or airing our sky parent series? And how negative are the chances of seeing WatTine in an our sky 3 lmaooo

GMMTV has taken a leap forward in the last couple years, and I feel like Aof has been a big part of that not just in terms of the series he himself directs, but it seems like he's in charge of queer content as a whole for GMM now? It feels like they have an actual strategy instead of just falling into things now, and as a Virgo I enjoy a good strategy. I too am looking forward to Our Skyy 2 because I would LOVE for Our Skyy to become a regular thing for GMMTV (if they did a He's Coming to Me episode I'd plotz). I like anthologies, and I love leaving a space to continue stories that make sense to continue without the pressure of a second season, mini or movie. Special episodes are a great tool but they can be hard to produce as one-offs, so bundling a bunch of specials together is a pretty good production strategy. Close Friend did this with varying levels of success.

Anyway to come back to topic, and to your question, I had to go look back up all the Our Skyy source shows to remember who all was in 'em. There's shows where I didn't watch the original but watched the Our Skyy episode, and shows where I was decidedly meh on the original but liked the Our Skyy episode. And of course there's shows where I'm VIBRATING for the Our Skyy episode already. So my ranking is more like groupings, but I still have a top choice.

Akk/Ayan, The Eclipse - I want to see an older Akk and Ayan go back to Suppalo for a reunion or something and see how the school has changed.

Neung/Palm, Never Let Me Go - I don't know what direction this is going in yet, but I think I'd prefer a side story to an epilogue.

Chay/Gun, A Boss and a Babe - I have money on this show being a dark horse, and if I'm right they can give me anything they want.

This is hard. I will put this out there that I haven't seen many of the new ones, and also the ones with the best pairings aren't always the best as far as SHOWS go, but I'll give it a shot.

#1. Great Men Academy

I know this isn't exactly a BL but I just love it so effing much imma count it as one ok. Look, two boys are endgame, isn't that all that counts

#2. Love By Chance/A Chance To Love

For the sole reason that I'm absolute and utter TinCan trash and have watched their storyline more times than I care to admit

#3. Tharntype

I know this is a very polarising one, but as someone who loves shows about fucked up people, I really liked this one. It had some solid character development for the mains, the humour is gold, and the relationship is so fucked up and messy that my dramatic ass can't help but love it and as far as the overall storyline of the show goes, I found it very satisfying

#4. History 3: Trapped

GOD Trapped is SO GOOD. As far as crime BLs go, I still feel like this one takes the prize for the best one out there

#5. Secret Senior Love: Puppy Honey 1 & 2

Again, it's not exactly a BL since it has both straight and gay couples in it, but as far as overall shows go, this is one of my favourites. There are BL pairings I like more than PickRome, but I think as far as the show storyline goes, there's something solid and special and too wholesome about this one. S2 messes up the straight couple's storyline, but that's where the gay couple's storyline really shines so it evens out.

Couple of little drama notes, and a question for the fam, if you’re reading!

1) I’m doing it, I’m plodding through SOTUS as a part of my education into old GMMTV. I trust in @absolutebl that this show will get better by episode 6, and I stopped at the fourth segment last night, so I haven’t seen that closure yet, but: unfortunately, the chemistry between Krist and Singto is arctic at the moment (at least in my interpretation), so it’s been a touch of a slog. But I’m gonna do it, I’ll get through it. I think there’s a lot to be said about programs that were made in their own moment. Also, I need to figure out wth Krist’s deal is, because he’s as charming as the rocks that my kids pick up from the sidewalk. 

2) Later this year, I’ll want to get into Off’s repertoire -- I thought he was FANTASTIC in 10 Years Ticket, and I haven’t seen any of his OffGun work (and he’s somewhat decent in SOTUS, but this script isn’t helping anyone). I’m thinking I’d start with Not Me (I’m not sure I can watch a show called “Senior Secret Love: Puppy Honey” ....), but family, any thoughts on Theory of Love or I’m Tee Me Too? I’m not sure if I can actually handle another Krist/Singto vehicle after SOTUS (but again, I want to be fair), but I’m Tee Me Too would also cross a TayNew piece off my list, and I’m still committed to getting to know them before GMMTV’s Cherry Magic comes out. 

3) I’m unfortunately not very excited about most of the shows on my list currently -- except for The Promise, which is VERY PROMISING, and I jumped on a reblog by my senpai @respectthepetty here to review episode 2. (And I’m admittedly happy with Jack O’Frost, I really need a dose of Japan’s weird reality transcendence to counteract the dullness of old GMMTV.)

Day 6: Your Favorite Kiss.

This would have been a really easy one if not for some of the strange lensflare effects and cuts that whoever directed episode 9 of Nitiman decided to put in.

But since that one, though I like it, is visually strange. We'll go with the second runner up. With a caveat that some of direction of-- closed mouth more chaste kisses being the norm, I guess visually this doesn't look like too much.

That being said it's all about the context, babey! And this being Pick sort of stepping out of his comfort zone and initiating is >>>

I like what this meant for their relationship as sort of, I guess a catalyst since there's still some clownery that happens in their story after this, but I like that Pick is confronted with how his jealousy is making things confusing for Rome and initiates something that's a bit more direct in regards to how he feels about Rome.

This, imo, makes it one of the better ones especially from a narrative perspective.

puppy honey is good but it’s only kind of worth it cause it’s mostly about the straight ship and offgun/pickrome don’t get together til the second season but it thought it was funny and in the second season there’s a plot twist that i DID NOT see coming so that was fun the only reason i even watched it was cause i wanted to watch ourskyy and actually understand who the characters were and their backstory but honestly it’s pretty cute and generally lighthearted and i enjoyed it so i say go for it

i was curious about ourskyy too! i just want something lighthearted so i’m definitely going to start it later :) but wait?? plot twist?? a good or bad one??
