The End Poem
I've wanted to make this post for years now.
My name is Iris, I've been raised in an environment full of hate. My father was a neofascist as I was growing up, when I was 2 he went to a "Forza Nuova" rally to which some people protested by throwing eggs at everyone. Father was and still is kind of a xenophobe, he's racist, and he's sexist, heavily. Throughout 2016 my parents had a lot of discussions, and as they did I sunk my time deeper and deeper into Minecraft Xbox One edition. They were fighting, on the brink of divorce, living in separate houses, and all I had was Minecraft. A game that I experienced fully offline and alone. From 2010 when I first played it on my 360 to this day, Minecraft has been by my side more than any friend, relative or pet. It shaped me. It made me who I am.
And this brings us to what I really wanted to talk about...

I consider myself an atheist, yet I've always felt that things happen for a reason, like if there was something pulling the string, some kind of universal intention. I believe The End Poem to have some kind of intrinsic power over people, I do not consider its contents to have literal meaning, it is like a parable. It's text written for a block game. Of course it's not meant to have any special spiritual meaning, right? Hell, the author got the text for it through a shroom trip! There's different levels of believing in the poem, I'll start off with stuff most of us can get behind. You can read The End Poem for yourself at https://archive.org/details/the-end-poem-release The gist of it is that two supernatural entities manifest themselves as text on a screen at the end of the long dream of Minecraft.
I will now start quoting and dissecting the poem. I will highlight the lime entity in bold text and the cyan entity in normal text.
Does it know that we love it? That the universe is kind?
Sometimes, through the noise of its thoughts, it hears the universe, yes.
But there are times it is sad, in the long dream. It creates worlds that have no summer, and it shivers under a black sun, and it takes its sad creation for reality.
To cure it of sorrow would destroy it. The sorrow is part of its own private task. We cannot interfere.
These entities talk about how the player has played in worlds of their own creation that caused them pain and suffering, we can interpret this to mean the existence of any kind of evil in the universe.
They go on and say that the sorrow is part of the player's growth and story, that it is an essential part of life, and that a life without suffering cannot possibly exist without totally obliterating the properties that make the player themselves. As we read the poem we understand that the player is one with the universe, that everything that exists is the universe. We learn that the pain the player fights is something that comes from within, that the player is love.
In the order these facts are presented we're told that the player is the universe, that the universe loves the player and that the player is love.
This means that the player's life purpose is to love, to spread love, to love itself, to love everything and everyone. That's the philosophical message of the poem.
Let's get to the theological part.
Who are we? Once we were called the spirit of the mountain. Father sun, mother moon. Ancestral spirits, animal spirits. Jinn. Ghosts. The green man. Then gods, demons. Angels. Poltergeists. Aliens, extraterrestrials. Leptons, quarks. The words change. We do not change.
We are the universe. We are everything you think isn’t you. You are looking at us now, through your skin and your eyes. And why does the universe touch your skin, and throw light on you? To see you, player. To know you. And to be known. I shall tell you a story.
This tells us two things: - The entities we are reading are supernatural, they are the rest of the universe. - The universe functions to grow and nurture the player.
In a certain sense, what this overall means is that we are our own. We're our galaxies, our lives, our planets, our stories, music, foods, smells. We're on earth to live, for purposes unknown, told to us through:
Sometimes I do not care. Sometimes I wish to tell them, this world you take for truth is merely ⊢⊣⊩⊣⊣ and ⊣⊮⊭⊬⊪, I wish to tell them that they are ⊩⊬⊬⊨⊥ in the ⊮⊤⊨⊫⊣. They see so little of reality, in their long dream.
This means that reality itself is a dream, made to grow each and every single player, that the hardships are a test made to grow us, that's what it means to be a player, to play the game of life, to grind, to pass the hardships, to slay the bosses.
In this sense, everything happens for growth, every single person is of immense value, a value that is enriched only by loving others and experiencing as much of the universe as possible.
These last two behaviours are common in most religions and personal beliefs of people, it's like if they were innate desires of mankind, to live life and improve life for others, to wish for nothing but happiness. What I've said so far can be confirmed with the last 3 lines:
And the game was over and the player woke up from the dream. And the player began a new dream. And the player dreamed again, dreamed better. And the player was the universe. And the player was love. You are the player. Wake up.
Thank you for reading. I believe I've never been so vulnerable before. This... this is my religion I think... Sometimes the notes that are not played matter just as much as the ones that are being played. If loving is what makes someone a good player, that must mean hate is the wrong way to live life, no matter what or who you hate. This aligns with the fact that hate is the easiest and weakest feeling to have. It's the innate reaction when presented with something we cannot relate to or do not understand. Hating is easy, loving hurts. To love is to make yourself vulnerable. Nobody likes to be vulnerable. Loving is innate. Hatred is something humans learn. On that note, by love I mean interpersonal affection: Romance is something humans learn too
Kids do not discriminate until someone in their life shows bias and they appropriate that behaviour. Humans started hating when concepts like money, ownership of territory and or things, monogamy and such arose.
Humans are inherently social, yet those conflicts that split us are also defining of humanity. We all wish for a better world and the poem implies it is not possible to eradicate hate, but that we must make our best effort to tolerate life, only through restraint and love. One thing I seem to have glossed over is, the entities that speak to you imply that they are the universe, that you are the universe, that they are not separate from you, that you are talking to itself. I am currently correcting myself explaining myself the poem I told myself if we go through this line of thinking.
Everything is you, everything means literally everything, even everyone.

Why Loki’s Sylvie Is A Mary Sue
So I am firmly in the camp that Sylvie on the Loki series was/is a Mary Sue.  The last episode made me feel better and like maybe the show was doing a thing where they were faking you out that she was a Mary Sue only to show she was actually sort of a bad guy and I liked that.  But all the recent interviews make me think the show wants to go back to her being a Mary Sue.
But I feel like when I call her out for being a Mary Sue people tell me what are you talking about, she’s not a Mary Sue, bad things happen to her, etc.  But that doesn’t actually make her not a Mary Sue.  
Also, before we start, I know some people find Mary Sue sexist.  But I personally use the term for guys and girls. I don’t use the term to belittle women.  I use the term to criticize a poorly written character.
And I know Mary Sue is often used to describe fanfic characters.  But to me, this series is kind of like a fanfic because the writers took a character who had been in canon MCU material for ten years and then created characters around that character.  So, I kind of review it like I would a fanfic.  It’s very different than if the writers had created a brand new show with all of their own new characters.
Anyway, if you are not totally familiar with the Mary Sue term, then check this out:
I know the term Mary Sue probably means different things to different people.  But I have always used these guidelines when I write my own fanfic to make sure my characters never come off as a Mary Sue.
This article really gives you a full scale of what a Mary Sue is.  If you start reading it, you’ll immediately see why Sylvie is.  But I’m going to take out the parts that most fit Sylvie just to highlight why I believe she is a Mary Sue.  I apologize for this being so long.
Mary Sue Character Traits
Personality
Erm... what personality? The typical Mary Sue doesn't have one per se, because she isn't meant to be a character; rather, she's an entity by which the author makes cool stuff happen.
I feel like that is Sylvie in a nutshell.  She doesn’t have a personality.  I feel like even though she ate screentime, I still don’t really know her at all.  The writers love to say she’s badass.  That’s not a personality.  
Sometimes when I am writing stories for fun and creating new characters, I like to take surveys as my fictional characters.  Like the kind of surveys you’d see in a magazine, like personality types, what’s your dating style, etc.  I figure if I don’t know what my character would do in any of those situations, then I need to keep working on my character.  And if I was trying to fill out a survey pretending I was Sylvie I would have no idea what to answer because she doesn’t have a personality.  She’s just “cool”.
What little personality a Mary Sue has isn't as important as how other characters react to it. No matter how shy or socially awkward Mary Sue is supposed to be, other characters will be inexplicably drawn to her
This is so Sylvie.  Loki falls in love with her...why, exactly?  He falls in love with her in the big Nexus event moment...why?  Because she had a tough childhood?  Mobius spends like two seconds with her in a car and goes from hating her to saying she’s his favorite Loki.  For. No. Particular. Reason.
She's extremely persuasive; everyone finds her opinions to be better than their own
She enchants Hunter B-15 and then immediately Hunter B-15 makes it her whole entire life mission to back Sylvie up.  
And occasionally she'll be a complete asshole...This can manifest itself in several ways...The author wants to write a badass but doesn't know how. This leads to a character who mistreats everyone around her and is never called out on her abrasive, casually abusive behavior.
Sylvie talked down to Loki and treated him like garbage for all of episode three, but it was never portrayed as a bad thing and we never got any impression Sylvie later felt bad for the way she treated Loki
The author doesn't know how to hold back the character, meaning that she will succeed at practically everything. This means that when she encounters rules or authority figures who would otherwise prevent her from doing what she wants to do, she rolls right through them (and they praise her for her "boldness" in defying regulations). If a bad guy is violent and aggressive, she can beat him by being more violent and aggressive (with all that entails). It's impossible for her to go overboard because she's protected by Protagonist-Centered Morality.
Sylvie is shown as a kid to immediately be able to grab a Tempad and run away.  And she can kick ass way better than Loki, for no known reason.  She is always able to fight back against the TVA when they attack her.  And she can kill lots of innocent TVA agents but it’s okay because TVA bad, Sylvie good.
Skills
She will always be superior to the canon characters, regardless of what canon has established they can do or whether it makes any sense.
Whose skill was needed to defeat Alioth?  Sylvie’s.  Of course.  Sylvie needed to teach Loki her skills in order for him to succeed (!).  And again, she is literally called the superior Loki.
Relatedly, there's no effort to her skills. She never actually trains or learns anything to become more powerful; she just wins the Super Power Lottery, or is a freakish natural learner, or is just Inexplicably Awesome
We’re told Sylvie literally taught herself magic.  She literally taught herself to enchant people.  That. Makes. No. Sense.  Like, I have so many questions.  Like, why would it even occur to her to teach herself that?  And how????????????  This is really lazy writing.
Canon Character Relationships
Mary Sue is often designed to hook up with another character, often as a form of Wish Fulfillment. This isn't that bad in and of itself (okay, it is kinda weird), but Mary Sue accomplishes this without any sense of realism. She just grabs her lover's attention straight away, and their relationship will never face any obstacles or tension; it's true love from the start and nothing else. The biggest giveaway is if the love interest is explicitly the author's favorite character, and she essentially "cures" him of all the angst that ails him (at the expense of his characterization).
Yeah, so...this one should be pretty obvious to anyone who watched the show.  Loki literally falls in love with Sylvie immediately, and then he suddenly turns from “villain” to “hero” just because of loving her.  And this was definitely at the expense of his characterization.  And Loki just knows he falls in love with her.  There’s not even any moments of hmm what do I feel for this person?  It’s just true love, immediately.
She will be related to a canon character in some way. This (marginally) helps explain such phenomena as her being a Copy Cat Sue and other characters accepting her so easily.
Sylvie is a Loki variant.  They use this to help explain why Loki is drawn to her and why their falling in love immediately “makes sense”.
Most characters give her more heed than they normally would. The good guys never stop praising her
Seriously, it was so over the top and OOC for Loki to gush over her.  He literally tells her she’s amazing.  They don’t even make it subtle.
Characters' previously established personalities change in reaction to her. Proud, arrogant gimps suddenly acknowledge her superiority in everything. Reckless youths will listen to all her advice. Responsible leaders will defer to her instead. Villains will obsess with her to the detriment of all else. Extremely competent characters will become stumbling buffoons who require her help to do anything. Sweet, mild-mannered characters whom the author doesn't like turn evil and insult her. They all become unnaturally focused on her in some way.
Again, Loki’s whole personality changed in reaction to her.  He became a buffoon who needed her help to enchant the Alioth because of course he couldn’t do anything without her!  Hunter B-15 goes from doing whatever the TVA said to fighting the TVA just because of Sylvie.
Story Elements
Mary Sue is without exception a single-person Spotlight-Stealing Squad. The entire story hinges on her existence; if you removed her, there would be no story. 
Sylvie undoubtedly drove the whole story this season.  It all became about HER meeting the TVA heads because of HER trauma.  Loki’s life was only saved at the beginning because the TVA was trying to capture HER.  And SHE was the one who started the whole multiverse (!).
Mary Sue is The Chosen One, even if the setting already has one. There are many ways she can accomplish this: she can be a Sailor Earth type who "shares" the position with the canon hero; she may be vaguely "destined to help the destined one fulfill their destiny" (i.e. do all the work except the final blow so that the prophecy is still technically correct); or the canon hero may be revealed to be a Fake Ultimate Hero all along. Being the Chosen One doesn't necessarily involve her being a God-Mode Sue, especially as authors become aware of the phenomenon and try to avoid it, but it does make her critically important to the world and allows her to continue stealing the spotlight without the "god mode" label.
HWR wanted Sylvie to come with Loki in the end, like she was chosen all along right alongside Loki.  Like one of the most important characters in the entire MCU is now this character who we only met a few episodes ago.
Most Sues have an unusually Dark and Troubled Past. It's often used to create a Sympathetic Sue, but any type of Sue can have one
They tell us, over and over, how hard Sylvie’s life was because she was kidnapped by the TVA in order to create sympathy for her.
She almost never does anything wrong. In the rare instance that she does, it's usually; (a) a way for the author to disclaim her being a Mary Sue by introducing a single imperfection (that has no bearing on anything anyway), and (b) designed to show her smarts by making her feel instant remorse, and she'll be Easily Forgiven anyway:
So this one hopefully will not come true, as a lot can change between now and when the show is taped. But if the show goes on the way the behind the scenes team is talking, Sylvie immediately felt remorse for betraying Loki, and Loki has already forgiven her and is desperately looking for her.  Ugh.
Alternatively, she is more than capable of doing something wrong, be it in general moral terms or something that goes against whatever code she abides by, and she maybe even frequently does so, but don't expect the other characters or the narrative to ever acknowledge or comment on it in any real capacity. If the other characters do call her out, expect them to be treated like they're the problem for daring to criticize her at all.
Mobius calls her out for killing people, but Sylvie immediately says he’s a bad person and then Mobius agrees, because, of course.
She will often suffer from Special Snowflake Syndrome; i.e., she has a trait or backstory that sets her apart from her group or race.
She is the only female Loki, thus making her the special one among all the Lokis in episode five.
Presentation
In visual media, the camera just can't stop staring at her.
The camera would follow her in fight scenes rather than Loki.
Mary Sue Tropes
Okay, so there are specific Mary Sue tropes that Sylvie is.  One of those is Copy Cat Sue, which I think was referenced before.
Copy Cat Sue
A lot of fanfic writers...start to write something because of their passion for this character, but they find something about the character that doesn't mesh well. Maybe they're the wrong gender or are otherwise not close enough to the author's expectations...In any case, rather than put them through the Possession Sue process, they just get a Clone-O-Matic™ and out pops a Copy Cat Sue...the character might be intended as a replacement for the canon character, but without whatever icky traits the author hates. They'll then rob the spotlight, prove the canon character to be unworthy of his/her position, and either relegate the character to obsolescence or, perhaps, even remove them entirely.
Sylvie is basically a clone of Loki, she is a variant.  But she absolutely robbed the spotlight of Loki’s, and they literally call her the superior Loki.  I mean, they are literally not even being subtle about this.  And there was a feeling by myself (and a lot of other viewers) that Sylvie might ultimately replace Loki in the MCU. 
Black Hole Sue
Much like a black hole, this is a Mary Sue who "sucks in" the plot and characters to her. Characters will behave outside their personalities, logic will be defied, and rules will be broken for her sake.
Sylvie really does suck up all the plot and Loki definitely behaves outside of his personality just to fit the Sylvie show.
Jerk Sue
A Mary Sue who is mean or maybe even cruel, but are still treated as an ideal person.
Once again, Sylvie is basically a jerk all of episode three, but you’ve got Loki falling over himself to call her amazing in just the next episode.
Relationship Sue
A Mary Sue who exists to be the perfect mate for a specific character...this character has everything in the plot conspiring to enforce this One True Pairing...in Fanfiction, they are the perfect beloved of a canon character.
They literally have Mobius speculate that Loki falling in love with Sylvie is so extraordinary that it causes an entire Nexus event, that’s how huge this One True Pairing is (!).  And Sylvie is the love interest of Loki, the only character who had been around before the beginning of the series
TLDR: Sylvie has all the tropes of a classic Mary Sue character.  So calling Sylvie a Mary Sue isn’t being sexist or just randomly hating on the character.  If you use common Mary Sue characteristics to examine the character, she just has too many of these characteristics to ignore.

Miraculous Ladybug. Ah, the show that can't deliver its promises, teaches the female mc wrong lessons, is so sexist and racist it hurts and still calls itself "woke" and says they promote "girls power". I was so angry I wrote it at 1 am with little to no light to see what I was writing.
Mlb has a lot of problems. I won't be talking about the plot because it will be too long.
So here we are!
✓ Who is the main villain? Is it Chloé/Lila or Hawkmoth? The grownup man who chose to terrorise Paris and abuse people in their most vulnerable times? Or two teenagers who need a more strict discipline and help from adults, not their peers? Both Chloé and Lila made mistakes but they're kids who can change. I don't want to say they don't have to be punished for their actions, they do. You can't change a person if they don't want to and making them face consequences of their actions is an important part of growing up. If Mlb writers really cared about teaching their viewers that people can change, they will start a redemption arc for Chloé after Antibug and after Volpina for Lila. But, apparently, they decided that letting kids change their behaviour and grow up to be a better person is boring, right?
✓ Gabriel Agreste. Abuser, control freak, magical terrorist. And yet some people believe he deserves to win. He's not only a bad person but a bad villain too! Most of his actions have no sense and work only because the writers said so. Why did he think that creating a supervillain is a good way to lure out a superhero? They could be in different country/city. Both Miraculouses could be hidden in someone's attic! Plus from New York special we know that other heroes exist. How could he be so sure they wouldn't be the one to fight his champions?
And why did he akumatize himself? He had no way of knowing that Ladybug saw his book. He saw Adrien take the book. All he had to do is to say something like this: "It's a very important book Adrien. Your mother found it years ago in her attic. This book was a great inspiration for me". His akumatization was too convenient for the plot.
✓A lot of people blame Marinette for causing so much akumas. Are you okay people? Hawkmoth is the one who creates akumas. What a surprise! No one other than him can do that. Repeat after me: upsetting someone doesn't equal to using their feelings for your own gain. Chloé deliberately humiliated or angered someone and it still doesn't count as causing an akumatization because it wasn't her goal. I don't mean to say it wasn't wrong but she didn't send an akuma. She is a spoiled rich brat who doesn't care about the consequences of her actions. Lila came close to actually causing akumas but it's still Hawkmoth who sends out butterflies and uses completely natural and normal feelings and emotions against everyone. Please, don't shift his blame on teenagers.
✓ Sexism is everywhere. From civilian interactions to heroes' costume designs. So here's a list of problems I've remembered at 1 am:
Writers show Lila or Chloé trying to kiss Adrien or invading his private space in a bad light. How dare they harass him? And then we have Chat Noir act the same towards Ladybug! And unlike Adrien Marinette actually says "no, I don't like you. Don't touch me like that". Adrien knows that he makes her uncomfortable but he doesn't care. "She loves him but can't accept it" isn't a good reason to continue harassing her. No means no. Not "continue asking me" or "I'm playing hard to get". Disgusting.
Only rivals Marinete has (excluding Hawkmoth because he's Ladybug's rival) are her love rivals. Lila, Kagami, Chloé. Why can't we have a character who rivals Marinete in her passion: designing? It's not "girls power" to have girls in question fight over one rich white sad boy.
The whole Gamer episode. Marinette won fair and square. She deserved to take part in the tournament. Was it okay for Max to be upset? Yes, he spent a lot of time training. Was it okay for him to be angry at Marinette? No, it's not her fault she was better than him. Some may say that she entered because of Adrien (another issue I will mention later) but it doesn't make her less skilled.
Every girl who has a crush is shown obsessive. Marinette, Chloé, Lila, Kagami - Adrien, Rose - Prince Ali, Ondine - Kim. We weren't shown Alya having a crush on Nino but I'm sure she would be just as obsessive because writers can't believe girls can have crushes and not be obsessed with them. I would also like to mention that having two characters of colour with no previous chemistry is kinda racist.(I could have just missed it because I'm not good at noticing flirting. If you noticed Alya and Nino flirting before Animan I would edit this part). They also don't talk a lot if it's not about Adrinette. Their purpose is to push main characters to each other. That's it.
Boys are really nice to their crushes even when akumatized. Both Silencer and Evillustrator were gentlemen. Nathaniel literally took Marinette on a date! Exceptions are Adrien and Felix. Adrien is just perfect (not my words) and Felix is Adrien's evil twin. He was used to: a)show how great Adrien is; b) say "Ladybug would punch Chat if she were truly uncomfortable"; c) to make fans hate him because they prefer PV Felix and Astruc hates him. Do you know why point b is the most harmful? Because it enforces the stereotype that women are always willing and consenting and they have to go to ridiculous lengths to take that consent back.
Suits. Every girl has a skintight suit with little to no details. And did you see how skinny Rena Rouge is compared to Lady WiFi? Or how Ladybug's suit has only one colour? The show doesn't even try to make clothes look more fashionable. They have three (!) designers, two models and Chloé is the Style Queen's daughter. They didn't even try!
✓ Making fun of Marinette's anxiety so often. It's offensive to people who have the same problem.
✓ Master Fu. He's an awful person who pushed his responsibility on children without explaining anything. There was no point in hiding his identity. What if they were akumatized? Well, Paris would be doomed anyway. No Ladybug to purify akuma, no cure. And we saw how dangerous akumatized Chat was in Chat Blanc.
Do you know what would happen if he revealed his identity in the beginning? There would be no Stoneheart 2.0, Marinette and Adrien would have a better understanding of their powers, a support system, a reason to get away to transform.
✓ Chat Noir and Ladybug not knowing who the other is. I've already explained why the akumatization excuse doesn't work. How can you trust a person you don't know? They would be able to support each other in their civilian lives. But they wanted a love square and that's why revealing won't happen in a looooong time.
✓ Sexualisation of minors. Have you seen Mister Bug? Or Lady Noire? They are 14/15! It's gross and disgusting to lust after teenagers. And what about numerous shots of Ladybug's backside? Or how thin Marinette is?
✓ Teaching wrong lessons. First they bash Marinette for not trusting Chloé and then they bash Marinette for trusting Chloé with the bee. How dare Marinette not have fun while fighting her friends? And then several minutes later: How dare she have fun while fighting her friends? Or how she was basically told her feelings don't matter by Madame Bustier in Zombizou. And blaming her for everything bad that happens in the show.
✓ Marinette's whole character revolves around Adrien. It's most obvious in the future special about China. She will go there not to learn about her heritage and her mother's culture but to be with Adrien. Almost everything she does as a civilian is about Adrien. They don't let her move on even when it's hurting her. Wouldn't it be much better if she tried to grow as a person, spend more time on her hobby. Maybe find Hawkmoth?
✓ Another issue is that they don't even try to find Hawkmoth. They treat only symptoms and one day it won't be enough. We had one episode where they were close to finding him. But Gabriel was akumatized so no lead again. Very convenient for the plot.
Why does Mlb have such a big fan base? Why is it so popular? So much wasted potential it physically hurts. But the most important question is why do I spend so much time and energy on this show? Please, send help. I can't continue doing this.

#1: dean criticized sam for wanting to protect jack, and then devalued jack’s entire existence to an “it”.
sam: “look… losing mom and cas, that’s a lot to process, dean, especially on no sleep. and the kid...”
dean: “the “kid”? come on, man, you know how this plays out. kook, when we try to bend the rules, pretend that the bad guys aren’t so bad or that things will get fixed, that’s when people that we care about get hurt. and then we end up doing what we should’ve done in the first place, which is end the problem. so this time, let’s start with the obvious. soon as i find a way to take care of… it.”

Since @the-rambling-maiden gave me the kind of validation that makes one cry with joy. I couldn’t wait to publish part 2 of Mahabharata High School AU. Ik it’s too long I’m sorry 🥺.
Senior students in the limelight:
Yudhishthir:
The headboy.
Tries really hard to excell, still is barely above average.
Is driven by the idea that everyone likes him while most of his classmates find him plain annoying. Some of the teachers too.
Is the headboy because for some unknown reason Bheeshma likes him and no one likes to disagree with the principal. Dhritrashtra tried opposing but no one really listens to him.
this kid, Krishna ran a campaign that convinced everyone that Yudhishthir is the best headboy they could have. Without that he had no chance.
Everyone else just accepted and now listens to him because that’s what Krishna wants.
“Okay I’ll give a very interesting lecture in Moral science class.”
- everyone, even the teacher struggles to stay awake.
Draupadi:
Head girl.
Has witty comebacks to everything.
An all rounder.
Looking at her, everyone wonders why someone as under achieving as Yudhishthir gets to be the other school captain.
Changed her name to Panchaali. But everyone still calls her Draupadi. Doesn’t like it, but has made her peace with it.
Is already done with the world’s patriarchal ways which are the basis of the school’s sexist rule book.
Is EXTREMELY, EXTREMELY beautiful.
Once, some juniors went to the principal’s office and saw a picture of the first headmistress. They were all admiring her beauty while Draupadi walked in. And suddenly all the admiration shifted to her.
An iconic friendship quadrent of Arjuna, Satyabhama, Krishna and Draupadi exists right since they joined school.
Had a beef with the Geography teacher, Kunti because had a thing going with Arjuna for a while.

Dated Draupadi in the freshman year, it didn’t work out. Is still best friends with her though.
Currently in a relationship with Subhadra, she’s two years younger, but our boi doesn’t really care because he’s so smitten by her. Bestfs still above her though.
Is Kunti’s favourite kid. Kunti is an actual sweetheart exclusively to him.
Everyone loves him.
Sometimes sick of all the attention he gets.
Major enimity with the soccer team’s vice captain, Karna.

Bheema:
Really tall, really husky, Fitness freak.
Still loves food more than right about anything.
There’s only one person he’d choose over food. The head girl. Some say he has had a crush on her since junior school. Draupadi values him a lot but doesn’t seem to reciprocate the attention he gives her.
Is stupid, but it’s okay because he’s also the good-est boy in town.
Not very bright academically.
Doesn’t get the recognition he deserves.
Literally the BEST basketball player, but all everyone in school seems to care about is soccer and track events :/.
Has anger management issues which land him into trouble very often.
“Panchaali! You should be proud of me, I prevented a murder today, BY CONTROLLING MY ANGER.”
Nakul:
Is a year younger to everyone in his class.
Really cute, really handsome. Is also well aware about this.
Is not much of a ladies man but SO MANY PEOPLE have crushes on him.
Is practically never seen without his guitar and bestf, Sahadev, who is the only one who shares his birth year.
Can be found giving out personalised skin care routines for fun. And Sahadev, being the brains of the duo, charges in cash, that is how both of them get their pocket money.
Goes to the restroom after every period to make sure his hair are still on point.
Has a successful band. Obviously he’s the lead.
“Wow! Who is this beauty!? Oh my God! This is why I use mirrors as mood boosters.”
Sahadev:
Smartest kid in the school. School topper.
Can talk about random trivia for hours, and people like listening to him.
Is either in the library or hanging out with Nakul.
Hates school A LOT.
Sahadev doesn’t attend a lot of classes because he knows teachers aren’t of any help to him.
Always attends maths class, even though he doesn’t like Sir Shakuni. Prolly because he wanted to be Shakuni’s fav but Shakuni only likes the bad boys. Sigh.
Is a walking human encyclopaedia.
“Why is everyone so stupid!? I WANNA GO HOME! I HATE YOU ALL! (Except my boi Nakul).”
Krishna:
(Ik everyone in the fandom loves him v much. Please don’t hate me for this.)
Manipulative to a point its very toxic.
Doesn’t like taking responsibilities and being held accountable
so just tricks people who take up responsibility into listening to him.
The OG heart eyes in the campus.
Still ships Draupadi and Arjuna for some reason. Even though he treats Arjuna’s girlfriend as his younger sister.
So stubborn.
Is good at everything but doesn’t like the lime light.
A Krishna-Shakuni Feud is the best source of entertainment.
Krishna seems to think that every body who disagrees with him is absolutely wrong and would go any length to make a point. Is also sort of disrespectful to the teachers he doesn’t like.
However, has a very captivating charm that makes him most people’s favourite. Shakuni sees through his well planned schemes because he has fully functional brain cells.
Loves his friendship quadrant and a girl from some other school who visits often, a lot.
A feminist. Hates the school’s rule book in a positive manner.

Karna:
Soccer team vice captain.
Here on a scholarship.
Every girl with daddy issues is head over heels for him.
Uses Hating Arjuna as a personality trait.
Also uses his love for Duryodhana as another personality trait.
Has lots of rumours about him. He doesn’t care because all he cares about is defeating Arjuna.
A lot of students ship Draupadi with him. It’s just stupid. Both of them dislike each other, but are too evolved to care about stupid rumours.
Is extremely generous.
Since the owner’s kid, who is RICH is his bestf, he never misses a chance to slide a meal from the overpriced canteen to any one who forgot lunch.
Suffers from classism and tries very hard to fight the inferiority complex he gets because most kids around are super rich.
Dronacharya dislikes him, he dislikes him back, however, still tries to win him.
Has abandonment issues.
Some say he looks upto Ma’am Kunti for validation.
The cricket coach, Pashuram, likes this kid though.
“Are you challenging me Arjuna!?”
Duryodhan:
Thinks too highly of himself.
Being the owner’s kid makes up for half his personality. The other half is his devotion towards his beloved Karna.
Is probably bi and Has a not so subtle crush on his bestf.
Has another personality that is devoted to trying to convince everyone he should be head boy.
He once started an intervention demanding “Duryodhana should be headbody” and he was also the leader on the intervention. Karna was unwillingly in his support.
Is Sir Shakuni’s favourite bratty kid.
Only listens to Shakuni or Karna.
Comes up with evil and downright mean mischiefs but always fails.
He once tried to full on flirt with Draupadi but got his a*s whooped.
Tried to sabotage Yudhishthir’s reputation but Krishna’s interference led him to fail.
“Where’s Mitr Karna!?!? I get anxiety when I don’t have him or Sir Shakuni around for long!”
“I should be headboy! No head girl. Karna should be headboy 2.”
Dushasan:
Befriended Duryodhana first year of school.
Looks up to Duryodhana. Only imitates his bad qualities. That’s it, that’s his entire personality.
Even Shakuni who loves bratty kids, dislikes this one.
Has more haters than the headboy. Except people hate on him openly.
Total failure.
A bully.
Dushasana can be found in the last room on the third floor of the oldest block very often. That’s the detention room.
Tries to flirt with every girl around, and girls just ew this creep AS THEY SHOULD.
Doesn’t have a personality of his own.
“Dury Bro! HOW DID YOU DO THAT? CAN I TOO PLEASE?”
Sikhandi/Sikhandini:
FEMINIST.
Gender fluid and ready to teach a lesson to anyone who invalidates her.
Strong and independent.
Important member of the soccer as well as the cricket team.
Also, a star athelete.
Has a very strong bonding with Ma’am Amba because VERY similar.
Sikhandi/Sikhandni can be seen gossiping with Amba on the stair case a lot, some claim to have heard them trash talk Bheeshma.
Bold and not afraid to stand for what they believes in without caring about the consequences.
Once they gave herself a third ear piercing, using a compass when Kunti told her a double piercing was a distraction after Yudhishthir complained about it.
Emerges as a parent figure to juniors who are bullied for being different.

Drishtdyum:
Introvert.
Minds his own business.
Manages good grades and a spot in the sports squad.
He found out he shared his birthday with the Draupadi in second grade. Loves her like a sister since then.
The basketball coach sees some spark in him that no one else does.
Is liked by all but doesn’t get the attention he deserves.
Is pretty content with life in General.
Ashwatthama:
Soccer coach’s kid.
Is self aware.
Realistic and practical.
Suffers from major attention deprivation.
Duryodhan lent him a pencil case in second standard. Asshwatthama tries so hard to become his favourite ever since.
The Iconic Karna Dury duo however, ignore almost always.
Expanded the “Duryodhana should be headboy” intervention but his efforts weren’t recognised.
Closeted gay.
Respects superiors while disliking them.
Quite bitter.

Subhadra:
Eyes like forest pools.
Looks up to Draupadi as a role model.
Arjuna is her weakness even though she’s dating him.

There’s this brilliant student in the junior section, Abhimanyu. Subhadra and Arjuna spend a lot of time with him together. They sort of look like a very happy family.
Always tops English and History class.

Dushala:
Is the sweetest person around.
Believes there is some good in every person.
Even hangs out with Duryodhana and squad thinking they’ll change some day.
Karna and Dushala often discuss how to mend this group’s ways, assisted by Dury’s girlfriend, Bhanumati.
Is stuck in a relationship with a jerk but doesn’t have the heart to break up with him.
Is literally kindness personified.
Dushala’s favourite teacher is Gandhaari. Probably because no one else gives the teacher validation and Dushala doesn’t like when someone is sad.
Jayadaratha:
Terrible person.
Only the size of a grain of sand better than Dushasana.
Started Dating Dushala Sophomore year.
Dushala really wants to break up with this jerk but she’s too sweet to hurt someone even as terrible as him so she just avoids him.
Once Draupadi slapped him in public. Dushala cheered the loudest.
Is only relevant because of his girlfriend.
Bhanumati:
Says Duryodhana is an excellent boyfriend.
Corrects her man when he’s wrong.
Is also close friends with Karna.
Led the intervention against the “Duryodhana should be headboy intervention.”
It hurt Dury but it’s okay because Bhanumati has her own thoughts and he respects that. Guess he is actually a good boyfriend.

Yuyutsu:
Is very lovable.
Boy has no hater.
Somehow was befriended by Duryodhan in junior school.
Feels stuck in the Dury gang ever since.
Secretly, very strongly admires Yudhishthir, Arjuna, Draupadi and of course, KRISHNA.
Is everything you’d wanna fix in Yudhishthir.
Yuyutsu, Dushala and Vikarna trio is bff goals.

Vikarna:
Counsels Duryodhana on Yuyutsu’s advise.
There isn’t much to say about him. Dude’s a good guy with humanly flaws.
Feels stuck in Dury gang but has made his peace with their ways.
Dushala, Yuyutsu and Vikarna are often found gossiping with Ma’am Gandhaari, she often warns them about how their other friends are bad kids and they should not get influenced.
“Why!? Because yuyutsu says so that’s why!”
Eklavya:
Here on scholarship.
This poor kid was bullied so much initially when he joined school because of his economic status.
Coach Drona wouldn’t let him into the soccer team because he’s afraid someone might out shine his favourite.
Stays away from the dirty politics in school.
Became a star athelete despite all the odds he faced.
Eklavya was once locked in the washroom before a 100m race on the sports day. No one knows who did that for sure. Although some people claim to know it was Coach Drona.
Rukmini:
President of the theatre club.
Crushes on Krishna for an unknown duration.
Krishna does give her attention because EXCUSE ME, she is impossible to ignore.
Rukmini befriended Nakul in the corridors as they bumped into each other after every period, while going to/coming from the washroom to check their respective hairdos.
Satyabhama:
Is Draupadi’s psychological twin.
President of the debating society.
Another one of Krishna’s closest friends.
The school is full of Satyabhama-Krishna shippers. But their friendship quadrant knows Krishna is smitten by this girl from some other school.
Radha:
The girl from some other school.
Probably goes to an all girls convent school.
Is shy but can be seen having a a gala time with Krishna after school. Friends w Subhadra too.
Nobody in school knows much about her but it’s evident Krishna and her are 11/10 soulmates uwu.
Rukmi:
Rukmini’s twin brother.
Is overly protective of his sister.
Thinks he’s well sorted but almost always creates a mess.
Has some sort of minor feud with Krishna.
Is neck deep in a very toxic friendship with Shishupal.
Shishupal:
Rebel without a cause.
A headache.
Wants to fight Krishna but is scared of him.
Wants to join the Dury gang but no on lets him in.
Shishupal is known to spread the most problematic rumours in school.
Hidimbi:
Stays occupied in her small social circle of not so popular kids.
She’s famous, though doesn’t talk to many people.
Proposed to Bheem in middle school.
Bheem gently turned her down because he was already mad about Draupadi. Hidimba moved on with life without sulking about it. Probably still likes him though.
Also, really close to this Ghatotkutch person who is in fifth grade.
Ulupi and Chitrangada:
Dated Arjuna for a few weeks each.
Then bonded over how he’s not a good boyfriend and not as perfect as everyone thinks he is. they do have a point though.
Are now bestfs and don’t like anyone else in school.

Hi, sorry for what is most likely a very weird ask 😢 but I've never read TLAT since physically I don't have the circumstances to commit to such a long abandoned and unresolved fic, but i love all your stories and writing so I read your TLAT fics too! I loved them, especially the fluff dribbles because you give them such delicious dynamic 😍. I read the first chapter of Potter and Evans too and I think I understood most of it even without knowing the backstory, but I have one question if it's OK? I know this must be selfish of me but could you tell me what's the deal with James and Carlotta? Was she the prettiest girl in school? Did he really love her and then she dumped him?! 😱

This ask is not selfish at all, although I do really, really, really recommend reading TLAT! It genuinely is such a beautiful work of art. With that said...spoilers are definitely available, so I don’t ~think~ it’s evil of me to answer this?? i honestly feel kinda guilty abt this lmao but...below the cut!
Hoo mama. Strap in for this fuckin ride. (This got unbelievably long so TL/DR at bottom lmao, but a lot of it is actually relevant to P&E)
First off, yes, Carlotta Meloni is the prettiest girl in school. That is her main character trait. Her main personality trait is knowing it. 
We....hate her with the fire of a thousand suns. Everything’s fine lmao.
So in July before 7th year, James and Lily almost kiss. It’s...wow. Just...WOW. But Lil is drunk and scared of her own feelings, so she calls it off at the last second, which James takes as 'nothing is ever going to happen between us.’ Then he pops off to his beach house as The Rich are wont to do. Carlotta is there, she flirts, he flirts back, she kisses him, he kisses her back, she asks him out, he says (Lily will never love me so) yes.
MEANWHILE, Carlotta’s best (only) friend Shelley Mumps has been in love with James since 462 BC, which Carlotta knows, but Shelley isn’t pretty and he barely knows she exists. It’s very high school. (TLAT starts with its main characters as very immature teenagers, and they grow a TON and become these lovely, insane, completely fantastic people, and then this plotline comes along to be like But Lest You Forget, Wow Are They In Fucking High School. It hurts. Jules is an evil genius.) Shelley hears that Carlotta is dating James, is furious at the betrayal, so she gets a tan (and a weight loss potion and much sluttier clothes) and starts trying to sabotage James’s relationship. 
Important background here: Pre-7th year, Carlotta was pretty universally despised by Hogwarts’s female population for shagging all of their boyfriends. So as soon as Shelley starts talking shit, a slow-motion school-wide catfight breaks out...which Mundungus Fletcher decides to monetize. Dung starts taking bets from the student population on whether James will dump Carlotta for Shelley. 
Ew. 
But again: high school. 1970s. James wants to shut it down, Carlotta says don’t because she prides herself on not caring what other people think (which James does too, but he understands that this is gross and awful. Car doesn’t care). Betting turns into voting on whether James “should” dump Carlotta for Shelley. What the fuck this actually means is left intentionally vague, and it of course becomes a popularity/fuckability contest. 
Up to now, Carlotta hasn’t really done anything wrong in this story except (debatably) date her BFF’s crush. That’s about to change. 
James wants to end the voting. Carlotta again says don’t, now because (Jesus Fucking Christ, get ready for this one) she has made a secret bet with Shelley: if Car wins, Shelley will leave them alone. If Shelley wins, Carlotta will break it off with James. 
Quick note: the whole time, James essentially lets Carlotta make the decisions, acting as if the women are the wronged parties, which, yes, the school is doing a super shitty and sexist thing. But if the roles were flipped and a girl were in James’s situation, we would feel AWFUL for her. I just think it’s important that the school is doing a really horrible thing to James too, and the fact that he’s the James Potter, Head Boy, Quidditch Captain, Universally Beloved Most Popular Bloke in School doesn’t change that. Just because he acts unaffected doesn’t mean he is. James Potter is human. And God, what a human. <3

Anyway. Vote’s coming up. James rigs it for Carlotta to get everyone to leave them alone. The Marauders, without telling James, rig it for Shelley (because they hate Carlotta for a long list of reasons, and they love Lily, and they know Lily fancies James) (oh, yeah! Lily realized she fancied James on the platform back to school, right before finding out he was with Carlotta. Quite a gut punch). 
Carlotta...fucking rigs it...for Shelley.

In her defense: James is in L* with Lily, and it would be really, really hard to be his girlfriend. Also, she misses her BFF.
Not in her defense: Literally every decision she makes in this process!!! Talk to him you idiot bitch.
So then Car confesses rigging the vote to Lily and they have a heart to heart (well, more of alternating rants. They’re not mates). L says Car should tell him, but doesn’t tell him herself because she’s Lily, and because she’s worried she would be telling him because she wants him rather than because he really should know...really, she doesn’t tell him because she’s Lily. Car initially doesn’t tell him, they almost kinda get back together. She commits her greatest crime here: once upon a time, Lily told Carlotta and Shelley all the “little things” about James that she’d noticed...it’s one of the story’s first ‘oh fuck, L REALLY likes J’ moments, but way before Lily has come to terms w that. Carlotta....then uses....Lily’s little things speech....to convince J to get back together with her. Dude, she’s worse than Umbridge. But then she changes her mind because Lily has made her feel guilty so she confesses, and they break up.
Wowza. Sorry for the fucking novel. I have...a lot...of feelings.
TL/DR: J started dating Carlotta after L rejected him, while still v much in L*ve with L but trying to deny it. Lots of high school bullshit happened, ending in a school-wide vote about whether J should dump Carlotta for her ex-BFF Shelley who also fancies him. Ew, David. Carlotta and Shelley make a secret deal that Carlotta will dump J if she loses, then Carlotta rigs the vote so she’ll lose. She loses, tells him about the bet and he’s like ‘OK I’m done with you.’ She then changes her mind, tries to get him back, but Lil’s goodness guilts her into telling him the truth about the bet and they break up. So to your questions...yes, no, yes and no. Lil thought maybe he loved Car, and in Potter and Evans, she now thinks he does because she dramatically misinterpreted what Libby was saying—teasing James about how unsuccessful his attempts at moving on were—as bro-y congratulations/teasing for how fast he found a rebound.

I just wanted to share something about Ares because it's been bugging me...
In many portrayals and interpretations I've seen of him they always make him appear as a sexist jerk who scoffs at women. Always angry, hurtful and just a big asshole all together. Toxic masculinity incarnate pretty much...
Don't get me wrong, Ares represents the brutal and blood-thirsty side of war, the cruel side of conquest. He is by no means a "soft boy" and he is prone to acting impulsively, jealous and envious. He loves the thrill of fight, sending fear and panic in the hearts of his foes. He is intimidating both in size and in strength, resembling more the voracity of an unhinged beast or a natural disaster than a man. He is terrifying, he needs to be. One should know not to make him angry. He is the god of war after all.
The Roman version makes him act more as an honorable war veteran, just and a necessary evil for the betterment of his followers though. A more mature, cool and collected Ares who puts his soldiers and civilians first if you want.
However, Ares is by no means a sexist deity. A story tells that when his nymph daughter, Alkippe, was assaulted by Hallirhothios (one of Poseidon's sons) she came to him crying and told him what happened to her.
Do you think Ares shrugged it off like many men of his time? Maybe marry her to her assaulter to prevent word from spreading of his daughter's loss of virginity?
No, no he didn't. He went, chased the man and brutally murdered him for the offense of hurting his kid. The first court ever was created for him to BE TRAILED FOR HIS OFFENSE.
HE LITERALLY RISKED GETTING THROWN FOR ALL ETERNITY INTO TARTARUS FOR HIS DAUGHTER. AND HE GAVE NO DAMNS. HE WAS LIKE "lol fine. Throw me into a dark cell. Idc, the dude deserved it."
On top of that, he gave the Amazons his strength. He courted Otrera, the mother of the amazons that before she was an amazon, she was an abused housewife. Her husband would constantly berate and hit her.
She grew tired and at night she would train and pray to Artemis and Ares for strength. She trained other women in secret as well. Ares literally told her "make me a temple with the meteor I will throw. If you do so, I'll guide you and your group to victory. You will never be mistreated by men ever again."
And so she did, she along with her women enslaved the men of her village and killed their abusers. Ares was so impressed he asked for her hand in marriage to which she agreed and they had other famous amazon queens. He always aided his daughters no matter how small or large the goal was.
There aren't many if not, no stories of Ares being forceful to women. If you ignore the Roman myth of Mars and Rhea Silvia...
He was known for being a... "giving and virile" lover. A philosopher called Marsilio Ficino said that "only Venus dominates Mars, and he never dominates her."
Ares is seen happily dancing in the Illiad in the wedding of Peleus and Thetis, a big smile on his face while doing so.
In some myths, he was trained by Priapus (google his name at your own discretion because Priapus is too... "well endowed...") who made a young Ares excel at dancing first before holding a sword.
He is seen crying and howling in the illiad when his son and later his daughter were killed in the Trojan war, he never hid his tears or weakness in front of other deities. He wasn't scared to be emotional. He was ready to avenge the death of his children.
Even Eros and Harmonia; who are by no means as violent and war-hungry as their siblings Phobos and Deimos, Ares holds dear. Eros is sometimes seen sitting or standing next to Ares, playing with his father's sword or shield.
Surely a super macho man as him should be upset at his non-combative children, right?
My god even Homer... the man who wrote/narrated the illiad and made Ares the personal punching bag of many gods and mortals paints Ares in a flattering light which shows him as a brave defender of the people. It's called homeric hymn to ares.
Instead of a destroyer of cities, he is a protector of cities, leader of righteous men, helper of men, giver of dauntless youth etc.
Here is the last part of the hymn:
Restrain also the keen fury of my heart which provokes me
to tread the ways of blood-curdling strife. Rather, O blessed one,
give you me boldness to abide within the harmless laws of peace,
avoiding strife and hatred and the violent fiends of death.
This prayer asks him not to allow one's personal hate and thirst for vengeance take control of one's self. To be just and abide to peace even if it's hard. To fight for a cause, for a reason...
I am not saying he didn't do crappy and horrible things or that people aren't allowed to write him how they want. He did and you can, but people forget or don't know the good things he has done as well.
Just wanted to share. I am also by no means an expert, so maybe I am not knowledgeable of more myths concerning him. Just sharing my thoughts!

sjm and crescent city and misogyny
so i finished house of earth and blood and i have some Thoughts. i didn’t think i’d like it and actively hated it as i read so clearly there are still some lessons to be learned in how useless hate reading a book is. and i’m still personally trying to figure out how to like something while also criticizing it/ acknowledging flaws (to be clear this is not about hoeab because i straight hated it but i do like parts of acotar). this isn’t gonna be a review cause this ain’t goodreads but here we go
why are all of sjm’s worlds so misogynistic? like i genuinely don’t get it. the amount of times cunt/ whore/ slut was said in hoeab was absolutely ridiculous (i know there’s widespread complaints about the amount of cussing and maybe it ties to that idk). maybe i don’t have enough sworn enemies or whatever but i literally never hear people say those words without it being a Big Fucking Deal and yet sjm is like the goddamn salt bae meme with them. she couldn’t figure out one other reason to make Amelie and Bryce enemies besides being jealous over a dude. in acotar the sexism inherent to the Illyrians, the lack of high ladies when not only does it add nothing to your narrative besides making your characters seem super duper for not being sexist, it actively makes no sense as there are plenty of powerful women so why wouldn’t they be leaders??? by force if nothing else. i know there’s other examples in throne of glass it has just been a hot sec since i read them. idk if these all seem small and petty but there’s just a pervasive misogyny to all of her worlds and it’s difficult to put my finger to how it shows/ how to address it. 
and i don’t think sjm is fantastic at characterization in general but something really rubs me the wrong way with her female villains. it’s not that women are villains because i’m all about that. it’s the female villains have no personality beyond evil/ lusting after whatever love interest, being utterable unable to root for them (i liked micah, i was all about that but sandriel ehh) and just being 2d as hell. and the fact that sjm is willing to redeem anyone and everyone but no women. at all. i do think sjm is not good at writing actual morally gray characters or villains that make you root for them cause she either takes the literal worst would eat babies if they could route or they are secretly a good person you cannot hold their sins against them or the i say they’re complex and morally gray but they’re actually a marshmallow route. so maybe someone else can tell me what i’m picking up on with her female villains cause i’m just rambling. 
she’s creating an actual made up fantasy world where everything is created by her. and it’s one thing if you’re making your world sexist on purpose and are then saying something about it/ addressing it but she just treats it like the default?? why tho. i know this is a widespread issue so i don’t mean to hold up sjm as some peak misogynist or something but she’s an author who has mostly female MCs and seems to be trying to make them strong and well rounded (we can argue about the effectiveness but there’s an effort) and so for her to have sexism as the default flavoring for everything. i’m just tired.
minor aside for LGBTQ+ rep which we all know she is the WOAT at (i hate acowar with such a passion but beyond the slaughtering of mor’s character and resultantly their friend group i’m not sure i remember another thing i hated that much ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ). idk who told sjm that all queer people feel the need to keep it a desperate secret but that is a blatant lie and most queer people i know never shut the fuck up about it. and while some queer people are in the closet and are still coming to terms with it, the secrecy to your closest friend group just tells me as a queer person that the friend group isn’t close full stop. 
i know the fact that sjm creates sexist books and is bad at diversity in terms of LGBTQ+ rep and characters of color (i spoke on the first two because that is my expertise as a white bi women but i don’t mean to diminish the racism inherent to her worlds too) is not new info. and i also think she’s average at best at characterization, relationships, world building, and pacing so it just irks me to see how popular and recommended her books are and i know at some point i just need to get the fuck over the fact that things i think are awful will sometimes be wildly popular. and this is a very negative post about an author that has written some characters and scenes i truly adore (lol just look at my posts) but i’m just tired of how little care is put into propagating sexism, racism, and homophobia into fantasy worlds and how low the bar can be for books (i promise i know good books and don’t need recs and am just a bit of an idiot in terms of picking the worst books of my tbr list)

the misogynistic character of mahiru hiragi
So a while back (this could have been a few weeks ago, I don’t remember where I saw it) But I saw some post that basically accused people that didn’t like mahiru of being sexist, which of course is bullshit, I don’t like her because her character in and of itself is a sexist one. Badly written, unrealistic, and incredibly misogynistic. 
In some ways I like the idea of the character. I like the idea of what Mahiru stans see her as- strong, capable, smart, independent, a top- (ok I’ll shut up) and that’s epic. But to be honest the way she’s portrayed in catastrophe at 16, in which her character is developed... she’s just... not. Mahiru apologists and the like want to seperate her demon self from her human self and show that she’s not actually a bad person, it’s just her demon, etc, etc, I’ve heard it all before. Yeah, of course that’s valid that her demon has a different personality than her, but to be honest all the actually good characteristics Mahiru has are then blamed on her demon.
Her human personality is to be honest quite pathetic.
It’s nice to think of it that way- that Guren and her had a nice happy friendship when they were kids and that the possibility of that was taken away from them out of their control, but when you look at that it’s not really the case.
Five year old Mahiru somehow manages to get onto Ichinose lands and watches Guren while he’s training, the girl comes up to him and starts touching his bruises at random and THEN asks “hey can I touch your wounds” like bitch?? Guren’s all “uuh who are you” and she’s like I’m the fairy of the woods ;) and that’s all well and good, cute, but the fact is most five year olds really aren’t fixated on romance like that? Reading that backstory bit, literally all she ever talks to guren about is romance. She’s five. They should be telling bad jokes and playing hide and seek and being stupid kids. And the only thing she ever talks about having a crush and wanting to get married and shit. I don’t see Guren giving a fuck about that and it doesn’t seem realistic that Guren’s affected by that. Some girls can be like that, yes, but not all the time, and guys definitely aren’t talking about lovey dovey stuff at five.
I would have loved it if Kagami gave them a genuine good relationship.
They never really had much of a real friendship, it was just Mahiru flirting with a pretty unresponsive Guren. Mahiru was always talking about gender roles and how he was supposed to do stuff for her (even though she’s clearly stronger and smarter) and that all she wanted to do when she grew up was be a pretty bride. Get some goals, child.
So eventually Guren finds out that Mahiru’s actually a hiragi and gets beat up by them even denying that he’d seen her. Mahiru should realize at that point being with him is going to cause him pain. Not her. Guren is blamed for all of it and Mahiru gets away scot free. And yet she comes back again just because she TOLD Guren to buy her cake. Guren bought her cake. She came back and she knew that Guren was going to get the shit beat out of him and Mahiru would be fine, and they would say that Guren was at fault.

She was clinging to him and hurting him for her own selfish reasons.
Her reasoning was literally “the hiragis killed my mom and I wanted to do something they’d hate”. She’s five. That makes perfect sense, I guess. And it’s not like she doesn’t have reason to hate the hiragis, of course, but she’s literally only hurting someone else. It means nothing to the hiragis. I think that’s completely forgiveable. She’s five, it doesn’t matter. She was characterized kind of badly and by a kinda sexist author, but so was every other girl in catastrophe (don’t think I don’t notice.) But that continues. Ten years later. TEN YEARS LATER she’s still pining over him. Hasn’t seen him since she was five years old and talked to him for like what?? A month?? 
Everyone at the start of the story is all “oh I feel so bad for you guren, I won’t tell you that she’s engaged, you must feel so hurt” and guren’s all I’m literally not?? I I haven’t seen her since I was five I’m so over her I literally don’t care. 
Mahiru comes up to him and asks him if he’s gotten stronger for her and he says no. He got stronger for himself and his clan and to be honest he doesn’t really want to get involved with her. And she acts just... badly. 
One thing that I just dislike is how she pretends to be a bottom for gender roles like that bitch??? She is a top. And yet every time she’s all “OwO I wish you were stronger than me so I didn’t have to do the work smh I’m just a poor girl I shouldn’t have to be strong you should be strong for me I can’t possibly do anything on my own I need a man” and Guren’s like,,, just so not for that.
She got herself into this mess, to be honest, and it was all so Kagami could play the “oh look at this, isn’t it such a tragedy that Mahiru’s a strong woman she’s such a victim she had to be the dominant one when women are supposed to be submissive, all she ever wanted was for Guren to be better than her” I can’t stand it. It’s sickening. It’s like kagami is playing her as an example of why women are better off not strong, saying her problem is her strength and independence. No, her problem is she’s still simping after a boy who literally hasn’t given a fuck about her since he was five. She would be so much better off if she moved on and found a purpose in life for herself.
All of her good traits are portrayed as evil and demonic and blamed on her demonic self- and then Kagami makes her say stuff like “oh no I wish you would start acting like a top guren because I’m so clearly a bottom and my demon is the one making me act like a top i’m so sorry” oh my god. I would have honestly liked the mahiru and guren fucking scene if she’d just fucking admit she’s the dominant one and move on? Guren doesn’t know what the hell he’s doing, you’re acting so pathetic and he’s stupid and every time a word comes out of her mouth I groan. Guren’s all “I’m not letting you have your way with me” and she’s all “uwu i’d much rather you have your way with me hehehe” like you’re really not. You’re not convincing anyone Guren literally thinks “it was like he was being dominated and he was made to like it”. 
She’s a bad person as a demon but she has good character traits and then she tries to play it off every time she’s actually strong by being a stupid manipulative whiny bitch. And that’s Kagami’s fault. Kagami takes the “Guren’s the heroine” line and makes it out to be a bad thing. It shouldn’t be and neither should her bad traits be played as tragic and sympathetic and her good traits be played as evil and wrong.
I’m not attacking Mahiru stans, because you take her and make her the strong character Kagami can’t manage. I like you. I wish that version of herself was the truth. I just wanna bitch about how Kagami wrote her and move on.

I see a lot of people praise caska for being an amazing female character but I kinda feel like she’s written like a bad joke about women (looses battle because period, too emotional, told her role is to comfort guts, etc...) she doesn’t get much time to really shine as a fighter either bc she’s constantly being saved of course I love her and will always defend her but do u think she’s actually written well as a girl? I feel like I’d be lying if I praised her for it

No offense but I mean…
Let’s put it into perspective. There is a reason why Casca during the Golden Age was written the way she was, and I don’t think it’s necessarily bad writing. Some (questionable) views about women were expressed that way, but I’d like to think that’s more because of the time the Golden Age was written in, rather than because of malicious intent.
During the Black Swordsman Arc we were shown how Guts handled those who were weak: He absolutely detested them.
During the Golden Age we were shown how he dealt with other’s weakness (Casca’s) and also *why* he hated the weak during his Black Swordsman Arc days: During the Eclipse, the Hawks all died because they were weak, and Casca was violated and lost her mind because she could not defend herself either. (The irony of this is that both of these things all happened because of his best efforts to save Griffith, boyo was too distracted)
Black Swordsman Arc
Guts generally was very contempt towards those he considered weak, and also especially towards other men, e.g. Vargas whom he just let die. Another time someone weaker than him died, it was the priests’ daughter, who was slaughtered by evil spirits. He also felt remorse killing her possessed body, even then and also vomits later on (he always vomits when he hurts a child or girl, see Adonis, see killing the fire children in the lost children chapters). In the page below, bottom panel, you can see white sprinkles which I believe are tears.

He then goes on to say how he cannot bother to crush ants below his feet when he walks. That was his way of dealing with the sadness, getting someone who is weaker than him killed because of him. His love-hate relationship to weaker people was also shown to us by his interactions with Theresia: in some way, he did save her here from falling off the ruins. But she had to hold onto a sharp blade so she wouldn’t fall.

Guts was hurting someone who he would love to protect, and he also hated himself for it. He made Theresia go down the very same path like he did because revenge is the only way to give her something to hold onto after losing everything.

It reminded of his own suffering, losing the Hawks and Casca. At least, this is the conclusion I made when I read the Golden Age and then look back to the Black Swordsman arc.

When Casca was later introduced during the Golden age, IMO Kentaro Miura wanted to show us how Guts usually treated people. As it turns out, Guts does want to protect and make sure people are safe. He also listens to them trying his best to meet their expectations. In other words, he was not always an asshole. In regards to other people’s weaknesses, his treatment of Casca was still rough in the beginning, but at the very least imo, well-intentioned.
Now you can critique Miura for his display of Casca’s womanhood. I am personally not particularly bothered by it, especially if this situation is a set up for romance in the first place. Of course the protagonist is going to take note of another character’s feminity if the author plans to hook them up. Guts was confronted with Casca’s female problems (periods) and what we were shown is that Guts, while he may have had his preconceptions about women too, still is understanding of their struggles AND their weakness.
Like… he first gets upset at Casca, but then acknowledges that she doesn’t have it easy, dealing with her own problems and emotions at times (Casca is a VERY emotional personality, too, but usually she has more self-control than this).

If anything, this bit right here displays Guts’ willingness to change his mind, his capacity to understand others and also help them in the process. Empathy, compassion, y’know? Something he lacked during the Black Swordsman Arc (this here happens right before Vargas is being beheaded):

That being said, I don’t think Miura actually thought that women being emotional is a negative thing when he wrote this, but he may have been affected by negative (cultural?) bias.
In the face of that weakness, Guts tries to help Casca out where he can and be supportive of her, e.g. by protecting her from Adon and his men - the 100 Man slayer scene was basically Guts protecting Casca’s womanhood from thirsty mercenaries, while she COULD NOT defend herself as effective because of her state (and he does that DESPITE of Casca throwing a knife at him earlier). This theme also repeats during the Eclipse, however, here he could do nothing but watch in his own helplessness.
Also let it be said that Miura’s potrayal of Casca’s period isn’t too far off, because periods CAN knock you the fuck out like that. My last one was absolutely devastating and I wouldn’t have survived without taking pain meds. So can periods affect your capacity to fight? Yes, they definitely can. You also gotta consider that Miura is male, and males *usually* do not know the effects of periods in detail unless they confronted themselves with it; also consider the Golden Age was written in the 90s, so that topic wasn’t prevalent for men at all.
Contrast & Comparison as writing tool
Miura also set up a nice contrast by adding in a particularly sexist character: of course I’m talking about Adon.

Adon calls Guts a fool for protecting someone at the cost of his own well-being, and the way he talks it’s like saving multiple women and exploit them is normal and acceptable.

But: Guts is literally taking multiple arrow shots for Casca and does not ask for anything in return. (It’s also interesting to note that through Adon’s mockery Casca realizes what Guts is doing for her) Now, you could argue that Guts is still a sexist asshole, however, at least in comparison to Adon, Guts still appears like the good guy  You can critique the ideas about women, how their prejudices and problems they struggle with are depicted, yes, and imo it is valid critique, too. But creating comparisons by showing how differently the characters act or think in the same scene is still an effective way of story-telling.
What Miura later did with other female characters, like Farnese or Schierke, was to “mature up” his writing. His tools however, stayed the same.
More examples comes to mind:
Guts leaving the Hawks
When Guts leaves the hawks, Griffith, Guts, Casca and Judeau all hold monologues, depicting how differently they think. While Casca and Rickert view  the Hawks as family, Judeau still considers them a mercenary band, and Griffith treats his subordinate Guts like a possession and has no inhibition to kill him if it meant he would either not leave or not join another faction and potentially become his enemy. I wrote about this in more detail here on my website
Conviction Arc Farnese
The contrasting happens again when Miura makes Guts meet Farnese for the first time. He was captured by the Holy Iron Chain Knights.
Farnese treated Guts pretty badly: she whipped him out in a desperate attempt to assure dominance, then threw him outside into the cold so he would eventually freeze to death.

When Guts takes HER hostage, they switch roles. Surely, he is being rough to her, but at the same time, is saving her multiple times, e.g. from falling to death or evil spirits.

This is the same writing tool used, just filled with different ideas. Miura’s writing itself hasn’t changed.
Casca is not powerless
Also Casca indeed is capable of defending herself. She is NOT always being saved. Even when being pursued after escaping from the 100 Man Slayer Scene, she gave the pursuing mercenaries a hard time, e.g. ramming a branch into one of the merc’s eyes. In that scene, it didn’t look like Casca was losing, she just got herself out of a dangerous situation and leaps to grab her sword! Only THEN we see how a volley of arrows interrupts the fight.  Does this look like a Casca to you that is about to lose? It doesn’t to me. She could have easily defeated the other two pursuers all by herself.

Casca, NOT GUTS, later defeated Adon all by herself and she was at a disadvantage too (think the poison dart).

Even during the Eclipse she dealt the final blow to take down the apostle that killed Judeau. She is not being depicted as powerless at all. She always seems at a disadvantage, struggling against all odds, and *still* is victorious. Guts acknowledges the strength it takes for her to do what she does, and that’s why Guts is helping her as much as he can.
Now you could STILL say “omg but that’s still sexist”, but eh. There is nothing wrong with acknowledging someone else’s struggle, celebrating them for pulling through despite of all the obstacles, and also willing to help out, but I’ll keep that politics stuff for another post. Stuff like this can go wrong yes, but in either case and as far as I am concerned, Guts is not trying to be patronizing or strip her off her independence in any way.
However, Casca’s strength does have limits and her full strength was not shown to us either, but I’d like to think that’s mostly because she is more a side-character and didn’t have much chance to shine during the Golden Age. I really really hope that will change with future chapters.
TL;DR Just because an author expresses outdated ideas or ideas you disagree with, does not mean it’s bad writing.

Can I ask what happened? If that’s alright?
Lots of stupid bullshit. I don’t know why I even bother to run my fucking blogs. I was this close, this fucking close to just giving up and deleting. Guess my mind’s made up for me, huh? 
Some idiot tried to bring up real-life heavy discourse, personal offensive argumentative shit, on an askblog. They sent me a shitty message accusing me, the mod personally, of believing offensive shit and trying to start an argument. And I told them to leave, but I’m the one who fucking lost 4 followers over it? I had just gotten past 711 followers after fucking months and now, I’m back there. I can’t help it that someone fucking sent me that message. How about you unfollow the person who fucking sent it?  
And then this other person...Oh my god. Nothing annoys me more than getting tagged in a promo by someone who just sits there and insults and fights with my character. Why fucking tag me, then? I get it if it’s like...Mean characters, like Junko and Hiyoko. But characters that my muse is supposed to be friends with end up tagging me just to fucking fight the whole time and say how much they hate my character. 
So this person tags me in their promo and is all “let’s be friends! Let’s be besties!” And I’m just. Trying to be nice. Then they say to my character “I have a secret, but it’ll make you mad if I tell you, so I won’t.” And my character is like. “Okay.” And doesn’t ask because I don’t want them to fucking fight. But this person keeps pushing. They keep hinting at this stupid secret and I’m purposefully avoiding asking about it, because I don’t want the drama. So finally, they get frustrated and just tell my character the secret outright. And guess fucking what? My character gets mad about it! And they knew he would! They said so himself! I tried to fucking avoid it, and they pushed me into it anyway. 
But what does this person do? They start sending my character a bunch of asks yelling at them for being mean to their character. And this is happening while I’m already trying to argue with a bunch of other anons and I have a fucking event going on. But they start railing on about THEIR character and how evil mine is for getting mad. You know, about the thing that they purposefully didn’t say JUST to avoid getting him mad, and then turned around and told him anyway, and suddenly got shocked that he was mad. 
Then they start talking to a bunch of other blogs, telling THOSE characters how “mean and awful and horrible” my character had been to them for getting angry. Saying that my character triggered fucking trauma flashbacks and made them cry. After their character literally, knowingly started it. And then they put in the tags of one post that I had blocked them? When I didn’t. An outright fucking lie. Another thing to make me look bad in front of everyone else in the community. Then they started posting about how horrible and guilty the whole thing made them feel on their personal blog. The whole thing was just so fucking annoying. I wasn’t comfortable with the drama of the fight to begin with, that’s why I avoided it. But if you’re going to force me to do it anyway, then don’t turn around and act like I’m being so fucking evil. 
And then on top of all that, for some fucking reason, people thought it would be a good idea to start arguing about whether or not my character said something sexist. In the middle of my event, when I’m already arguing with 500 people about things. 
God, I know I play a villain, but it’s so fucking disheartening to have everyone constantly saying how wrong you are. I can only take so much, even in a fictional situation. But when you bring it into real life, into the person behind the blog, 3 times, and do the same thing? Fuck, I’m so god damn tired. No one even likes my blog anyway. Nobody fucking appreciates it. I’m sure everyone already thinks I’m an overdramatic asshole anyway.

ahhh thank you BB!! <3 I’m gonna throw it under a cut bc I know people aren’t gonna want my ramblings clogging up their dash lol. 
Edit after I’ve written it: Holy shit this turned into a monster but tbf I did say I was going to rant. I think I miss writing college essays...
Also, I would like to note bc I’m about to bitch, I do still love Hannibal and Clarice and all of the franchise. Hell, I even love book Hannibal because I’m garbage and want to be special. So yeah. It’s a fond bitching. 
Okay where to fuckin begin man... This novel was a fucking Shit Show, my dudes. It was like baby’s first fanfiction. 
Let’s just jump in, shall we? 
So by now, having read both Red Dragon and Silence of the Lambs, I know Harris injects of lot of sexual shit into his novels, fine whatever, but the amount of pedophilia is insane. Like, Red Dragon with the grandmother threatening to cut his dick off by holding it in between scissors????? And then we have Mason Verger, worst human on the planet. Like jfc I’ll go into him specifically more later but just. Men. Why does it always have to be sexual. 
Like that time Clarice wasn’t wearing a bra and she wanted to prove to Paul Krendler she wasn’t wearing a wire so she flashed him her tits?? Unnecessary, Harris. Bullshit on all counts. 
Next, poor Ardelia Mapp. So he clearly wrote out her accent in Silence, which frankly reads racist since to me it seemed like he did it every time a character of color was met but he didn’t for Clarice’s Southern accent except for this book when she was talking to Ardelia. Now, that’d be a cool way to show how close they are, sure, but it just... She didn’t show up enough to warrant that reaction from me, plus all the other casually racist shit he throws in. 
Ardelia’s literally there as the wise Black best friend to help Clarice along. She doesn’t feel like her own character, she’s only there in conjunction with her, or doing something for her. She was the fucking valedictorian for Christ fucking sake, she also works at the Bureau but if her department was mentioned it was only once in passing. She was not a full character which fucking blows because she could’ve been so cool. 
And real quick before I forget, I hate how she’s treated in the end. I do like she gets a reference and that brainwashed Clarice sent her an emerald ring and a note saying she was okay, but Ardelia was abandoned by her best friend (that she had lived with) with not even a phone call and they will never see each other again and I think Ardelia knows it. It sucks and I’m heartbroken for this woman. 
I’m gonna touch a little bit on the racism too. Now I’m white and not the most qualified to talk about this shit, but I do wanna mention it because it makes me mad. There’s just so many unnecessary slurs, any POC is more of a background helper character to Clarice than anything or a foil. 
For example, Evelda Drumgo. She starts us off. Badass Black woman who runs a drug cartel. She chooses to shoot at Clarice and risk her baby’s life, and we have Clarice wash the baby off and save his life. Then Evelda’s mother is written as irrational when she slaps Clarice for visiting the baby in the hospital; I get Clarice’s impulse, but that woman just lost her daughter because Clarice killed her. I would’ve slapped Clarice too, even if it was a totally justifiable shot. 
The baby himself is used as a foil throughout other parts, most notably to me when Clarice goes to visit Mason the first time. There are two Black boys from a foster home playing in a room with a camera so Mason can watch them, and it shakes Clarice up a lil bit because of the baby, but it says she’s getting more used to it.
Now this is half and half well written and shoddy to me. It’d be a cool moment, if the whole incident wasn’t nearly completely forgotten for the rest of the book shortly afterword. It could show growth, if Clarice had any growth to show. 
And then the Romani people who are literally just used and thrown away. Sickening. Also very broadly used the stereotypes we hear which Sucks; the three we meet in any sort of depth are pickpockets, one was already in jail and Pazzi used his leverage as a police officer to get her to do what he wanted and threatened to have her baby taken away from her permanently, like it was just bad. And then the man got killed. Pazzi let him bleed out. Asshole. 
The slurs. I could take out all of them and pretty much have the same damn thing. Like I get showing negative aspects of characters and just because a character’s racist doesn’t mean the author is, but with the characters already being as shitty as they are, fully didn’t need it to make them worse. Entirely unnecessary. Racism or the character being racist has no impact on the plot is the major thing, I think. And you can replace that with anything along those lines, like sexist, homophobic, transphobic. It didn’t impact the plot, they can still be shitty, you just don’t need to use them. 
This also goes in reference to Margot being a lesbian. And the transphobia holy shit, it was disgusting. Harris had Clarice think something so cruel and unnecessary it’s like my guy why was that even remotely something we needed to hear. We didn’t. I wanted to stop reading because that’s not my Clarice, first and foremost, and second, this is supposed to be the character we LIKE. And now I don’t like ANYBODY in this damn book. 
And he treats Margot like shit too, and Barney. 
Their friendship was beautiful and great and finally for once something nice was happening in Margot’s life and I was happy reading it, and then FOR SOME REASON Margot goes to shower in the same room as Barney after a workout, which makes no sense, and then Barney tries to force a kiss on her (and he was hard, Harris made that very clear) and she had been sexually assaulted by Mason her brother and ruin the whole damn thing and none of it would have changed any other piece of the novel if you removed it!!!!!!!!! Entirely unnecessary!!!!!! And Barney had the gall to say well I couldn’t help myself like none of that was realistic in the slightest, she never would have went in the same room to shower with him. 
Something you need to do is basically get some suspension of disbelief from your reader and maintain and stretch that as you go, right? Well mine was gone at that moment.
Also side note Margot is basically just there to show how shitty Mason is for the umpteenth time. Her whole thing is lesbian sexual assault victim.
Also heavily implied she was a lesbian because of the sexual assault. And we rarely see Judy, her girlfriend, so. Bad. Bad all around. 
Circling back around to Clarice and how disappointing she is in the books as compared to the movies. Well, Clarice is also a poorly written character. She’s 1000x better in the movie. Hell, she’s even better in this book than she was in Silence, but that’s not fucking hard. 
Pretty much all the characters are so flat they don’t even classify as two dimensional. 
Like sure, maybe we wanna say Clarice didn’t really solve much in the first book and was just handed everything because she was a trainee and that’s what Hannibal wanted. 
Like if you remember the John Mulaney sketch of Delta Airlines where he’s just going “Okay!” and running to the next place he’s told, that’s Clarice. 
Okay so why does she get goaded into all this shit now? She should know better. She should know how to handle herself better. Like she messes up basic fucking shit like clearing a room before untying Hannibal, which was stupid, she seems oblivious to some of the politics at work even though she’s been in the FBI for like 7 years now, she would at least have more fucking contacts than Brigham who died in the beginning and Jack Crawford who died at the end by rolling over in his bed to his dead wife’s side and Ardelia who would be near the same level as Clarice I guess but I still don’t know her damn department???? Like you fucking network. 
Plus after her final fall from grace with the FBI, we meet or are told of random side characters that go no where and do nothing just to say “hey look at my special little girl, everyone likes her and looks up to her!!” Why? Because she caught Buffalo Bill 7 years ago and then never got a promotion or even worked with the BAU? Again, it does not make sense. People may pity her? But a random girl in the lab wouldn’t be fangirling. Starling herself said her career had gone nowhere because of the politics and not sleeping with Paul. You need to show me why she’s likable in her actions not others words. 
We spend more time away from her than with her anyways but Jesus. 
AND HER IN THE ENDING. She was fucking BRAINWASHED????? Bull FUCKING SHIT. He completely ruined anything he even remotely might’ve had in this cluster fuck of a novel. 
Case in point, difference from the movie, Hannibal spends weeks (possibly? it’s left purposefully vague and I’m guessing that’s because Harris didn’t know the ins and outs and wanted his novel done) meticulously brainwashing Clarice, he had stolen her father’s bones and she’s so far gone at that point she doesn’t care, and the whole scene where Paul is getting his brain eaten? Yeah, she happily indulges and when he insults her, she asks Hannibal for more. Fuck you, Thomas Harris. 
And Hannibal’s a Gary Stu, fucking fight me. 
In the movie he either is or he’s tap dancing on that line, don’t get me wrong, but in the novels it’s insufferable because it doesn’t seem earned. The pigs didn’t attack him because they didn’t smell fear on him. No. He’s easily able to drug and brainwash Clarice and take her as his lover. No. Go away. He’s so smart and one step ahead and can manipulate anyone and everyone into doing what he wants and blah blah blah shut up! A character being perfect isn’t interesting even if he’s evil!! We all know he’s never truly in danger because of how Harris writes him and that’s boring!! 
And I personally have a pet peeve where the villain is described as a monster or unstoppable. That’s boring and I no longer care about your story. I know 9 times out of 10 your main character is going to find a bullshit way around the impossible and kill it. Or it’s just like a default personality and nothing else is added to it. And that’s Hannibal. 
I’m on Hannibal Rising now and, spoiler alert, he’s very bland as a character. (Also Harris switched some details in the novel which kinda annoys me like get your own canon right my man but whatever.) The plot itself is pretty fun? I guess? Like there’s action and stuff and I’m enjoying that. But it’s the same set up where Harris’s Gary Stu always wins, like he was 13 in the book when he killed the butcher. Let. Your. Characters. Lose. 
Also even more racist shit but what did I expect really. 
Anyways, I have no idea who I’m supposed to root for in the novel because all the characters are just kinda shitty. It really just boils down to Harris not showing any redeeming qualities or actions from any of his characters. I liked Margot for a while out of spite but she never really went anywhere and the way she killed Mason (btw she sodomized him with a cattle prod to get his semen bc side plot and then stuffed his Moray eel down his throat and somehow I still don’t think that’s the worst part of the novel) just. No thanks really. 
All the random little side plots were also pretty not great. How many time does Harris have to say Pazzi of the Pazzis? Like I fucking get what you’re going for, even if I hadn’t watched the movie I’d be like, “Oh this dude’s gonna get hung outta that window, dope,” the literal first time. Stop treating your readers like idiots. 
And then Margot’s side plot was that the will their father left said she needed a biological heir to inherit because he was pissed she’s gay and we needed the homophobia I guess, so Mason got everything, and she was helping him with the Hannibal shit because he’s pretty incapacitated duh, and in return he would give her his jizz so Judy could be artificially inseminated and they could have a child and get some of her inheritance. I don’t care. It was all very gross, and Mason kept saying shit like suck me off you’ve done it before, I won’t be able to feel it anyway, maybe Judy’ll suck me off you think she’d like that. It’s all gross. 
And I guess this is a good a time as any to finally start on Mason. So a great rule of writing to make everything work better and give your story more depth is to give everyone both positive and negative traits right, even and especially the bad guys? Like, rules can always be broken if you’re a good enough writer, but I believe I have established that Harris isn’t quite there yet, to put it nicer than I have. 
Mason is one bad trait after another. It’s like when Harris was bored of constantly writing about plain ole pedophilia, he threw a dart at a board of horrible things and landed on topics such as: pedophilia but make it incest, extreme sadism, sadism but against children now, and good old fashioned racism! Fucking Cordell was supposed to collect the children’s tears after Mason would make them cry and put them in martinis for him. Realism went out the goddamn door real fast with this novel y’all. Like a fucking Scooby Doo villain over here. 
And he loves talking about being a sadistic pedophile, he will literally not shut up about it to Clarice when she first gets there telling her about his trip to Africa and this portable guillotine he has and just. I get it was probably like trying to make her uncomfortable on purpose because he’s a Freak, but it went way too far if only because it was annoying, not even uncomfortable for me as a reader. I was bored real quick. Get to the shit I actually wanna know. 
And it sucks because of the weird, over-the-top way of how he died, I got zero satisfaction from his death. I couldn’t even be like, “Well at least Margot got her revenge,” because that’s not how she originally wanted to kill him!!! She wanted someone else to extract his semen for the insemination but couldn’t find anybody to do it for her, and then Hannibal, whilst tied up, said use a cattle prod and you won’t have to touch him and when you kill him you can blame it on me, and I’m pretty sure even if she hit his prostate right every time and he COULD cum from that alone in addition to how his body is Fucked Up now, it would’ve been a lengthy, gross, and re-traumatizing experience for her because all she wanted to do was avoid seeing and touching her brother’s private parts again, which I think is a totally fair and rational desire. 
So I have to live with the fact that she was desperate enough to not lose the house and business because of her homophobic father to go through her childhood trauma again. There’s no place in this book that has a somewhat positive conclusion. 
Even the very last bit where Barney has a girlfriend and a ton of cash from Margot, all he wants to do is see every Vermeer in the world right? Well, because Hannibal and Clarice are in Buenos Aires where one of them is on display, Barney gets spooked and has him and his girlfriend leave before he can see it and it ends that bit with he never got to see it ever so he didn’t even complete his dream!!! 
Also for good measure, Harris throws in that Hannibal and Clarice enjoy having sex regularly. For no reason. Just letting us know. 
I know this seemed like just a bitch fest, because it was, but I kinda sorta enjoyed it? It kept my attention at the very least. It’s really disappointing because like I said, I love the movies, all of them, and have since I was little. To see the original not stand up to that image in my mind is a little heartbreaking. Especially Clarice. She was a strong female role model to me, but turns out she’s... just kinda there. And her ending is that of her no longer being herself and getting that agency taken away from her. 
There is a reference to her waking up from a sleep, if she is asleep (that’s kind of how he worded it), that kinda let us draw our conclusions on whether she was just brainwashed into being good for him or if she was willingly going along with this and was in love with him I guess and it felt like a slap in the face. She turned from a hardworking, modest country girl working her way up to the FBI into a female Hannibal. Which on the surface sounds kinda cool because we love luxe serial killers, but that’s not what she wanted or who she was set up to be. And to insinuate that she would even remotely consider choosing that path for herself is at its best an insult to her and at its worst a complete erasure of her background, what little character Harris did set up. It also completely erases my own connections to her, as a girl from a small town myself who has bigger dreams than this and also... a good, strong set of morals. He just tossed that out the window. 
Obviously if you’re on this blog, you like slasher x reader shit, and this is a novel with a slasher x a person, right? So why am I so mad about it? Because the whole point of this blog and reader insert fanfiction in general is that you are taken as you are and loved wholly as yourself and that you are worthy of that love (in a fictional setting, not really loving people who are like this, which I think we understand but I want to clarify). She was not taken as she was. He is not in love with her, she is not in love with him. She was transformed into what he wanted out of her. He couldn’t get her to be Mischa, his first plan, so he made her like himself. And the fact that he was so easily able to do it makes me upset, and even more so is that it’s not written like it’s weird or wrong. It’s written like they’re in love and this is a good thing. 
He may have been going for the classic “everyone is capable of doing bad things” stuff we see a lot, but we got that from Margot already. And Barney, for stealing Lecter’s stuff and selling it. And Paul, and the entire FBI for turning on Clarice, and the kidnappers, and Pazzi, and random shitty side characters. And none of it was particularly well written or made some sort of strong statement. It just was. And that’s not a good enough basis for a novel. 
Anyways, if you made it this far holy shit you’re a saint and I love you, let’s be friends?? <3 Have a good day y’all, thank you BB for giving me permission to ramble.

My Captain Marvel Review
Before I do this, I want to clarify a few things. There are going to be both personal opinions on the character and simple objective observations from a different perspective that what most people are doing in defense of this character.  I am not sexist. I am not racist. I am not misogynistic. I do not identify with the Alt-Right and consider myself a centrist. I believe that modern Feminism (Contrary to Classical Egalitarian-Feminism) is a toxin in society and now it has translated into the MCU through her movie. 
I just wanted to put this out there first because any time I make any sort of evaluation of her movie or her as a character I get bombarded with hate, personal attacks, and people telling me why I hated the movie or something when they don't personally know me and aren't me. (You just hate strong female characters! Bitch, go look at my profile. I fucking LOVED Rescue, SCARLET FUCKING WITCH, and Nebula is literally one of my most favorite characters in the MCU... They were ALL badass in End Game)
So if you like her as a character and if you like her movie, please do not think that my observations of her or her movie are a personal attack against you. I've had so many people take my viewpoint personally for some reason and it no longer is a debate as they close their minds off to anything I say and start becoming immediately dismissive. I mean no disrespect in any of my viewpoints. I just feel like I needed to put this out there because... again... more often then not I'm dealing with some radical feminist that will foam at the mouth and protect her beloved character from any opposing viewpoint irrationally.

I’M JUST LOOKING FOR SOMEONE WITH A BRAIN TO GIVE ME A GOOD COUNTER ARGUMENT TO THIS.
Okay, so, I personally believe that Captain Marvel and her movie were a toxic addition to the franchise. This is going to be a little long, obviously, but I would appreciate it of you read through. Clearly you don't have to because it is a huge ass wall of text but taking in viewpoints that aren’t constantly validating your own is HEALTHY... So please read?
Firstly, they retconned the Skrull, that are one of the most recognizable villainous races in all of fiction like Klingons and Orcs, to be refugees of a war that they'd lost. In the comics they have 100% control of the Andromeda Galaxy as one massive Empire and the Kree were definitely not in the position to eradicate the Skrulls. They could put up a good fight, but I feel that the Skrulls were too well fortified in Andromeda to really be defeated by the Kree. That's the first, shortest, issue I disliked about the movie. They nerfed the hell out of the Skrulls to being simple refugees... and innocent. I'm sorry, but no... This is like going into the Star Trek Universe and retconning the Klingons to be some peace loving hippies. They were also some of the most human characters in the entire movie besides Nick and the Black Best friend. (I can't remember her name... she didn't stand out to me.) They were DEFINITELY more human than Carol Danvers herself. The moment when Talos goes to his family on Mar-Vells ship and hugs them was definitely the most human part of the entire film and it cemented my thoughts on the character. My favorite character in the entire movie was Talos. A lot more likable, interesting, and funny than Carol Danvers was... I wish the movie had entirely about him at this point because it would have been a better film by FAR.
Secondly, the themes. There was a clear message that this movie was trying to sell long before it even hit theaters, and that was Modern Feminism. The Air Force advertisements featuring female pilots, the girl-power advertisements, and so on. The movie was clearly trying have a target audience of young women or young girls and there's nothing wrong with that. However, I started to feel a bit off put by the movie when it showed literally ever male human character that wasn't Nick, Coulson, or the Skrull Leader, Talos, was a sexist prick. LITERALLY every single one of them were sexist. Even her Father. I understand in the comics her and her father never got along or something of that nature, but I personally feel that if they wanted to push the whole sexism narrative that they should have lead it with her father and kept it with her father. Instead they extended the narrative to every male in the entire movie and in her flashbacks.
I feel there needs to be a specific section on the flashbacks alone. Okay, so, in her flashbacks quite literally every single bad thing that happened to her was because of a man.
Carol was riding in that Go Kart and the boy told her she was going too fast. Of course in a feminist movie we can't have a girl listen to what a boy has to say, even if he may know more about what she was doing than she did, and so she goes and crashes horrifically. I thought it was a brutal crash.
A second later and her Dad appears looking down at his busted up and bleeding daughter, that I'd be taking to a hospital in a heartbeat, saying that she didn't belong there.
Okay, that alone is unrealistic to me to begin with. There are a VERY few fathers out there that would have the first words coming out of their mouth being that she didn't belong to be out there. It would be about her health, asking if she was okay, and they would be looking her over as best as possible. However, I will agree with the Father's initial comment that she didn't belong out there on the track. Why? Well I wouldn't want my daughter, who was too stubborn to listen to a boy that was giving good advice when she was doing something dangerous, to do anything dangerous again. Damn right she doesn't belong in dangerous, male, situations and jobs if she's going to act that way. The girl is going to get herself killed.
Then there's the whole, 'You know what it's called a cockpit, right?' scene and that alone, while not improbable, was unneeded at this point. We already had two male characters expressing their inherent, evil, sexism. Oh, but they went even further than that and got the motorcycle guy in there as well telling her to smile and everything. (Woulda been the first smile in that movie so far at that point for Brie.) While that does happen they’re continuing to beat a dead horse… Then later on it shows her being bullied on a beach when she’s REALLY little by BOYS he knock her down.
Then in Basic Training they’re all yelling out to her that she’s gonna die or and things of that nature are more or less unrealistic as well. My father was in the military and was going through basic around the same time that she was and he went into the same branch. The Air Force. When you go into the military they tell you that you are to be colorblind. That you are to be ONE force. ONE unit. You are a team and NOTHING should stand in the way of that. The means that racism, sexism, or any sort of predisposed idealism that puts on person down while raising another up is to be crushed and blown away like dust in the wind. It has no place in the Military as it reduces its effectiveness. So in that training scene where they’re yelling at Carol that she’s going to die and that she’s going to fail is NOT a proper representation of what happens in basic training. Maybe the Drill Instructors to stress you out or drill it into you that what your doing is dangerous and the military itself is dangerous, but not by your fellow team members. If anything your fellow team members are supportive because there are group punishments for your weakest link in your unit… If they fail, you all fail. If one person is stupid, you ALL get punished for their stupidity. So for her fellow trainees to be putting her down like that makes next to no sense and it is CLEARLY intimating the issue of women in the workplace not being able to do what a man can do or women simply being put down in the workplace for simply being women.
So, I don't necessarily agree with the route in which they went about the topic of sexism. The execution and presentation were not done well in my opinion. While you may have felt it resonated with you, what about the boys and the men?
Marvel Movies have always been oriented towards everyone. They've been family movies. Not one Marvel Movie has been solely and strictly for men. Why? Because movies with male leads don't focus on the fact that they are MALE leads... There's nothing special about a male lead or male actor in a film. They don't feel the need to point it out or make the male actor into a champion for men and masculinity.
So, again, what does this film tell you about men? It tells you what I've described. That men are sexist oppressors that want nothing more than to see women fail, smile, and do what they say. That men think women can't do the same job that a man can and that women aren't as strong as men. That's a message that is being conveyed here... and that's the ONLY message you get on the subject. That's the bottom line. There's no, 'but not all men-' in this film. There's no redemption act, representation (I know a lot of you love that word so here you go... You won’t like it cause I’m using it in a way you disagree with it.), or presentation of the fact that men will stand for women in face of true sexism. There isn't any sort of male role model to learn from in the film. Nick is there for comedic relief, Coulson is barely in the film, and the Skrull isn't even human. There's no outreach to TEACH boys and young men that sexism is bad. It simply states that men are sexist. That's literally it. This movie was for girls and girls alone, which is a failure in and of itself on the side of Marvel, and it is simply teaching them that men will do this. That boys will do this. There's nothing there to teach boys to not do that or any sort of redeeming quality for men in the film at all. Is this wrong?
So, yes, if you think it presented the female experience realistically, which I felt it did not in certain scenes, than I am not one to try and change your mind. I've never been in a woman's shoes and I've never experienced sexism from men like that. I'll let my opinions stand for themselves.
While I agree that sexism is truly a problem in society and still lingers, I simply feel that it wasn't presented well enough. That's my main issue with sexism in this film.
On a personal level I felt that if you’re a guy going to see this movie that you should prepare to feel like an asshole. The entire film is intimating that men are oppressing women, that men see women as objects that need to smile more, that women aren’t as strong as a guy or can’t do what a guy can do. It puts men in a bad light and sort of validates the Modern Feminist talking points and agendas that all men are evil, shallow, vile creatures that want to oppress women because they think that they are objects and aren’t as tough, strong, or brave as men.
(If Marvel had made a Movie about a Man that acted arrogant, cold, emotionless, and super super super strong and made all the female characters in his past trying to put him down, were annoying, were emotionally manipulative and controlling, were emotionally abusive, were using men for their wealth or income, and were lying cheaters with no sort of redemption character for women to prove things differently I think that this movie would have tanked.)
Thirdly, a shallow Carol Danvers. With all that being said up above, I feel like that all that made her character VERY shallow. The ONLY reason she’s a pilot, the ONLY reason she’s ‘strong independent woman’, the ONLY reason why she’s a hero is because she’s a woman that’s been put down by men her entire life. To prove that she can be a strong independent woman, and that men can’t keep her down anymore. It’s a consistent attitude of hers to challenge men regardless of who they are or to act arrogant towards them as when first seen by Nick Fury. Immediately upon seeing him she acts a bit sassy, or arrogant, because Nick isn’t knowledgeable about the alien conflicts that exists or doesn’t believe her about the shapeshifting Skrulls. This entire issue sort of cheapens the character as well because if you created the character with the sole purpose to be a conduit or avatar for feminism and feminist talking points… where do you go from there? All of her personality traits, all of her history, and everything that made Carol Danvers who she is about the oppressive nature of men. Once that is solved, which it is in her movie after she gains the full scale of her powers, where do you go from there?
For example in the Amazing Spider Man movies with Andrew Garfield his story was that his parents had died a long time ago and he knew nothing about them. After discovering some papers belonging to his father it becomes a story about self-discovery. To learn about his parents and what happened to them. To understand and connect with them in the only way he could which was through Dr. Conners. Later, since he is on this journey of discovery about his father and mother’s demise, he forgets to walk Aunt May home and Uncle Ben is mad at him for not remembering to do this and that he needs to start being responsible. Peter gets frustrated because this relates to his own past and current journey of understanding. To his father. Why did his father die? Why was he sent to his Aunt and Uncle's house when he had a responsibility to Peter and to be a father? Peter leaves out of this anger and selfishness and Ben attempts to follow. Peter had made his way to a convenience store and was trying to buy some milk but is a few cents short and lets a thief rob the place due to the cashier being somewhat of an asshole about it. While on his search for Peter, Uncle Ben encounters the thief and tries to stop him and that gets him shot. Uncle Ben dies and Peter realizes that it's his fault. That he had the power and strength to do the right thing but simply stood there and did nothing. That is what begins his quest as a Superhero. If a good person has the power to do something to save someone’s life, but doesn’t, are they really a good person? Are they just as bad as the man that pulled the trigger by letting someone die? So that becomes who Peter is. Peter isn’t a hero because he’s a strong white kid who got bit by a weird spider. Peter isn’t a strong hero because he’s a man or because women or men were keeping him down. Peter is a strong hero because he learned the HARD way that if you have the power to stop someone from doing something that could cost an innocent person their life, and do nothing, you’re just as bad as the guy that pulled that trigger…
Hell, Shazam’s is, ‘If you can’t save your family, what kind of Hero are you?’ I’m not sure if I got the wording perfect, but even the REAL Captain Marvel here stands for something that has deeper meaning and truth. Shazam is ALL about family and fighting for them...
That is a much deeper, much BETTER, character traits than the simple feminist argument that Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel stands for. That she’s a strong because she’s a woman. That she’s strong because she won’t let men keep her down anymore. That she can do whatever a man can do and do it even better. I simply feel like that cheapens the character and is a very boring, shallow, and limited origin story because throughout a Hero’s career they will be challenged on their morals and the reasoning behind what they do.  (And GIRL POWER is already something that has been established in Cinema for well over 50 years...) Batman’s is vengeance versus justice. That is a HUGE topic for the hero and he has been struggling with that issue for decades. An argument could be made towards Shazam that his reason for being a hero and doing good, to protect his family, isn’t FOR his family or BECAUSE his family… it’s because he’s scared to be alone again. That could be a good inner struggle for Shazam. So what sort of personal beliefs are going to be challenged when it comes to Captain Marvel? What sort of personal dilemma or inner struggle can she possibly go through? Why is she a hero? Cause even if you extend her origin story away from her childhood and to the Kree Empire where she was being trained to be used as a weapon against the Skrull that goes back to the issue of oppression and ties in with the rest of her history. Carol has been oppressed by men, told what to do by men, and has been controlled and used by men (Yon-Rogg is the face of this issue, and once again he’s a man.) for their personal gain and desires.
I’m sorry, but it’s just weak and shallow. There are no further storylines that you can have that sort of validate her reasoning of being a hero without making it some gigantic feminist issue. If the issue isn’t about feminism then she’s simply trying to do the right thing to do the right thing… and ANYONE can do that. It doesn’t make her special. In fact, there’s nothing really special or ultimately heroic about her. All she is a woman that achieved powers and saved a couple of refugees and declared war on a corrupt Empire. It’s… weak. Steve Rogers fights for Freedom and fights against Tyranny and was forced to reevaluate America and Shield during Winter Soldier and Civil War. These CHALLENGED his very meaning of being a Hero and what he stood for... The Hulk and Bruce Banner fight because they’re constantly being hunted to be exploited for their power, and not just by people who want to use him for evil, but also by people that want to his power for good… the bottom line is Bruce and Hulk fight to escape being used as a chess piece. They just want to be left alone. In this sense they aren’t even a hero, and that makes it even better for them as a character because it makes their choices and issues interesting to say the least… Black Widow fights because she’s trying to make up for the evils of her past. Tony fights because he wants to protect who he loves most and that he feels he has an obligation to Earth and to protect innocent people from being killed like the ones that were being killed by the weapons he designed to protect them in Iron Man 1.
I’ll leave that there though. I think the last thing I want to talk about is the Mary Sue aspect of captain Marvel. Just so people don’t immediately hate me for calling her a Mary Sue I’m going to copy and paste the definition.

So Captain Marvel is a Superhero and Superheros, in order to make them appealing and relatable, are ALWAYS shown to have flaws, weaknesses, and things about them that make them more human to the target audience. That’s what makes them lovable and likable. That you can relate to them and understand where they are coming from and sympathize with them. That you can watch them grow as a character and enjoy their Hero’s Journey. In this movie Captain Marvel has no character growth. Carol Danvers is literally the same as she was in the beginning as she was in the end except she has all her powers and now she hates the Kree. Carol Danvers has no personality flaws whatsoever except, maybe, arrogance and trust issues, and those aren’t exactly traits you want to share with her. They aren’t healthy character flaws. Besides that she barely has a personality to begin with for there to be any sort of flaws. ‘She’s spent six years learning to control her emotions,’ I’m sorry, but no. That argument is weak. Just because you learn how to CONTROL your emotions doesn’t mean that you sacrifice your personality in the process.
So with that being said she has no sort of personality flaw about herself and it is shown in the movie that she has no physical or emotional weaknesses either. In the entire movie the only time she was beaten was because of a surprise attack by Talon. From then on out she has consistently kicked ass, NEVER lost a fight, and NEVER physically struggled against any enemy. Carol was super strong and could NOT be stopped. It sucked any sort of drama or any sort of tension out of the movie. You knew she was going to win and be the hero because at that point nothing could stop her. Carol is a badass woman that could not be stopped. Yay Girl Power!
The best opportunity for her to have been given a weakness and a struggle was when she unlocked her full potential and had access to ALL of her power. To make her struggle to control it for the entirety of the battle except towards the end when she takes out those nukes sent down from Ronan. Even Peter Quill had issues controlling his powers and was CONSTANTLY being beaten by Ego until Yandu finally told him that he doesn’t control his inner strength and power with his head… he uses his heart… and that Power Up that he gets after that, after struggling and losing the ENTIRE movie, is extraordinarily satisfying. You LOVE it when he gets that power up. It’s like how in Wonder Woman she gets that power up after losing Steve and she goes ape shit… There’s a huge emotional lead up and tipping point in those scenes, but Captain Marvel doesn’t even do that. Instead she simply closes her eyes, and opens them and has complete control of her powers. It was ridiculous too because she hadn’t trained with even a decent percentage of her powers at her disposal before! For six years she just trained with a small itty bitty bit of her powers and then suddenly she has full control over ALL of her power as soon as unlocking it? That’s like a Fireman being trained to put out fires with a garden hose for six years only then to be dragged out to use a full on fire-hose at full power that usually requires more than one person to control and expected to do just fine…. Like, I’m sorry, but that’s not how that should have worked. After that point she’s basically Superman and cannot be stopped. There’s no fun to it anymore… it’s just a boring overpowered character being overpowered simply because she’s a woman… and this is only going to lead her up to being the hero that fans want to see lose. A LOT of people don’t like Superman because he’s a sort of Gary Stu in a sense and they ALWAYS love seeing him get his ass beat. By Batman, Shazam, Wonder Woman. Everyone enjoys seeing the most powerful man of all get taken down… Especially if they’re on their high horse like Captain Marvel is with her arrogant ass.
Oh yeah, the last thing I wanna add… They had to sex change Mar-Vell, the ORIGINAL Captain Marvel, because, of course, we can’t have a feminist movie with a feminist character that we’re trying to make into a feminist icon look up to a man after all. They had to have her looking up to a female Amelia Earhart sort of character instead of a Red Baron or Wright Brother sort of figure… That kinda peeved me as well.
So with ALL that being said, I simply think that she’s toxic because her entire character is based off of feminism. Modern Feminism at that. (I draw a line between Classical Egalitarian Feminism that I actually agree with, and Modern Feminism.) The issue is that not everyone agrees with the agenda of Modern Feminism and since she’s now the face of it, they’re just going to see an agenda they hate rather than a character they dislike. They’re going to see the Feminist Icon that they despise and won’t pay attention to her as a character. It’s going to cause a rift in the fan base, as it already has, and if she’s going to be made the face of Marvel like they want her to I can bet you that people are going to be finished with Marvel. Real, TRUE, fans of the MCU, not blue haired normie feminists as I’ve heard them described, are going to feel ostracised for not agreeing with Captain Marvels Politics and the fact that she’s so powerful simply because of girl power. I feel that with the introduction of her as a Feminist Icon that any movie she’s in is going to allude to that and buy into her Girl Power - Ex Machina stuff… Into the Mary Sue in her and it is going to cheapen every movie forward that she’s in. I mean, people are already talking about not seeing End Game because she’s in it and that they’re afraid she’s going to be the sole reason why the Avengers win… and frankly I’m afraid that she may be the reason why the Avengers win too and that would bother me a LOT. Not because she’s a woman, not because I hate women, but because she’s a terribly written character with no personality and is beyond arrogant. Especially in the, ‘Lets get Thanos.’ End Game clip that Marvel Released… It bothers me a lot…

Do you have any advice for writers who just. Don't have an experiance with important things? Like, if I wrote a story with a plot that followed conflicts I personally deal with, it would be whiny and dull. But I worry if I try to branch out to issues other people face, my lack of experiance on the topic will come across as plastic, or worse that im trying to profit off of other people's problems. But every story needs a conflict of some kind,,, and you get the picture
Hmm… If you feel comfortable with it, send me an ask with maybe some examples of what you’re thinking of, so I can give you some more specific advice. Because, like, writing about racism is quite different from writing, about, say child abuse? Also, I would argue that you shouldn’t so easily discount your own experiences and that there are, well, still plots you can write that wouldn’t fall into these, but that’s another post entirely. But here are my general thoughts in loose categories.
Firstly, do your research, preferably from people who have experienced whatever you want to write about. That’s crucial to approaching experiences that you don’t have. Aside from things like slaying dragons. Literal ones, of course. Metaphorical ones may still require research. But here’s the thing. Simply put, most problems are complicated. So how do you keep, for example, your story about racism/homophobia/sexism/ableist/etc. from sounding like a Very Special Episode™?
Keep in mind that most people know these things are bad. That’s why people always deny being them. Bob the Bigot isn’t homophobic; Bob the Bigot is ‘I don’t have a problem with gay people, BUT–’ So you need to go beyond X is Bad. And I’ll admit that’s something I struggle with. Incidentally, that’s why in DLU Alera’s racism stems from her insecurities (and her desire for money, which comes up later); Alera is constantly afraid of giving up her power, so she tries to make sure she has all of it and constantly tries to claim it’s what Bikaia would have wanted. Do I succeed? I don’t know. Maybe. She’s also loosely based off a certain president, but we won’t go there. So I suppose this boils down to ‘don’t just make someone racist/sexist/homophobic; give them reasons for being racist.’
And I don’t mean, ‘this person hates gay people because a bisexual woman named Seraphina murdered their wife.’ Your readers aren’t going to be fooled by such an obvious ploy for sympathy. Like, I do think you can have a character be whatever because they don’t think they are, and that tells us something other than Don’t Be Racist, Zelda. But do the extra work beyond X Is Bad.
(That being said, if you are looking at writing about racism/ableism/transphobia you would definitely want to ask someone besides me. As much as I’ve learned about these from academia and other places, I am still an able-bodied cisgender white lady.)
So now, you’ve made your plot something besides a Very Special Episode™. At this point, you need to look at your characters. Why? Because characters drive plot. So if you’re writing about sexism/racism/homophobia/ableism, you’re probably going to have characters who are very diverse. You might have a hard time writing about biphobia if you don’t have an bisexual people in your story. So at this point (assuming I’d already done my research about these complicated issues), I would look at TVTropes. I’m not even kidding. It’s a great source for finding all the negative stereotypes associated with any given group of people.
Now, here’s where it gets tricky. Some tropes you very obviously should not use. But you also need to use some judgment here. For example, just because the Dashing Hispanic is a trope…doesn’t mean you should simply go to the complete opposite end of the spectrum and never write a Hispanic swordsman, even when the setting would call for it, and make all your Hispanic characters as un-dashing and unattractive as possible. And really, a lot of things (but definitely not all!) can be fixed if you humanize your characters really well. So keep in mind that your Hispanic swordsman isn’t just a swordsman or defined solely by his swordsmanship. Just like you aren’t also just a student/writer/whatever. Or maybe you take away the dashing bit and turn him into a flustered mess anytime a man/woman/nonbinary pal pops into the room. 
Incidentally, some tropes can also be a good starting point if you notice there is a lack of diversity in them. I’ve been wanting to, for example, write a female Swashbuckler character (and well as a lady Hannibal Lecter) for ages and just haven’t gotten around to it.
(I personally also look up sporkings (chapter by chapter critiques) and/or reviews of relevant books for tips. Right now, I’m following a sporking of Mists of Avalon, once considered the feminist Arthurian adaptation before it was revealed what a horrific person Bradley was. Do I like Mists of Avalon or Marion Zimmerman Bradley? No. But if I want to write a bestselling feminist version of the Arthurian legend revolving around Sir Gawaine, I’m damn sure going to learn all the historical, feminist, homophobic, etc., missteps Bradley made. And I’ll happily recommend some sporkings if you’re trying to avoid certain things.)
So let’s say you don’t want to write about any of that. Let’s say you’re wanting to write about trauma. Depending on what you write, you want to be careful not to romanticize certain things. I’m not going to lie. As someone who was sexually abused as a kid, that is the absolute minimum standard for me. I cannot stand to read massive swaths of the romance and YA genres simply because of the way the Broody, Threatening Love Interest™ is romanticized. And as with anything else, do your research and ask questions. (Incidentally, the National Novel Writing Month forums are great for inquiries like this). Above all, be respectful.
If you can find them, beta readers are always a good option, especially if you can find people who have experienced the things you’re writing about. Or if you just have a couple of questions, you can always anon someone on Tumblr. Yes, some people may blow you off, but some of them won’t, especially if you’re polite and can show that you’ve already put forth effort to research that matter. (And not even kidding, I would answer EVERY bigoted question about the people of Appalachia if I NEVER had to read another nursing paper talking about how we’re “too stupid” to breastfeed and “feed all our babies Mountain Dew” ever again.)
Now, as for this profiting off others business. Let’s say you write your story, and it does actually bring you profit. Then, you use your platform to promote the voices of people who do have those experiences, and you acknowledge the great debt that you owe that community for sharing their experiences with you. And you acknowledge the luck and privilege that got you where you are. Support people working in the same area! You wrote a novel about a man in a terribly abusive relationship, and it becomes a bestseller? Great! Use your spotlight to share resources for abuse victims. You wrote a novel about a young person transitioning, and it garnered some success? Fantastic! Why don’t you point people to that underappreciated transgender writer? 
And sometimes? You’re going to make mistakes, and sometimes, being told that you’ve made mistakes will really hurt because you’ve worked so hard not to make them. I know. I’ve been there a couple of times. When I wrote DLU, I knew I could get some things right. I knew I could write about child abuse and being mistreated by someone you loved and still loving and fearing that person because I’ve been there. And I knew I could write about depression and loneliness and struggling to trust people because I’d been there. I could even say I knew a little bit about classism because I grew up dirt-poor in rural Appalachia, babysitting my brother since I was nine because both of my parents worked multiple jobs.
But I also knew that when I wanted to make Meta Knight a Hispanic man that I was opening myself up to criticism about race. And when I wanted to make Bandanna Dee a trans man, I knew I was opening myself up to criticism about transphobia. And I knew that when I wanted to make one of the primary villains a really racist, evil queen that I was treading on ground that I had no personal experience with. And we haven’t even gotten to Nightmare’s backstory, which basically features the first-hand colonization of Traumwald. So guess what? Sometimes, I’ve gotten it really right. And sometimes, I’ve really screwed it up and had people send me messages saying, ‘Sera, no.’ 
(And this is crucial; what I haven’t gotten is ‘don’t try to write this type of character.’ Generally, people like seeing different characters with different problems, and if you treat those characters and your readers with respect, your readers will treat you with respect).
But if you’re going to take any one thing away from this post, let it be this: do your best and learn to accept criticism with grace. Don’t let your fear of messing up keep you from ever trying. It is far better to try and write an experience, having approached it with respect and nuance, than it is not to. And sometimes, you will mess up, and that’s okay. You apologize, you learn, and you do better. I, personally, would rather see a writer fail, learn, and do better than to never try at all. Because that’s what writing is. It’s a process of continually working to improve yourself.

So, there’s something I have to get off my chest about the recent Steven Universe episodes (5x17-5x24). I’m really... not pleased with the reveal and the way the following episodes handled it. I honestly feel really... “betrayed” sounds overdramatic, so let’s go with “let down”.
tl;dr I feel that the twist ironically loops back around to not being a twist in a way that reinforces some sexist tropes, and Heart of the Crystal Gems feels like it’s paring down the nuance I loved so much about the way the show handled previous issues.
Spoilery details below the cut.
So, I theorized Rose shattered Pink Diamond long before we were told. The more we learned about Rose and Pink Diamond, the more I thought the theory they were the same person was absurd -- but the logistical details of just how implausible this scenario is are tangential here.
More than anything, the Rose-is-Pink-Diamond theory did not make sense to me thematically. Steven Universe is a story about caste rebellion: about breaking out of the boxes people make for you, and fighting for that independence against those who would try to put you back in the box. A common soldier becoming a general who struck down an untouchable queen is the perfect apotheosis of that. In the story we were told, Rose Quartz is a nobody who becomes somebody, a commoner who becomes a princess because the caste system is a lie and anyone can be what they want. I found that a very powerful, important, and relateable message. I want to believe that my life will not determined by the circumstances of my birth. I want to believe that anyone, even a nobody like me, can make a difference in the world. I want the kids watching this show to grow up believing that too. I really appreciated that Steven Universe gave me that message, and rejected the endless litany of royalty and genetics and bloodlines that so inundates our media.
But “A Single Pale Rose” flipped that on its head. Now Rose is just the age-old trope of the royal masquerading as a commoner. Now Rose did not break the caste system, she upheld it. It was never in question that diamonds could be whatever they wanted: they were the only ones who could be and that was why the gem caste system was wrong.
What message does this send to us? That sure, commoners can rise up, but we still need to rely on royalty. It ironically reinforces the legitimacy of the caste system to learn that no, none of the gems would have rebelled if someone with privilege didn’t teach them how to.
And, yeah, there’s now also the subtext that if Rose really had shattered Pink Diamond, that would have been wrong. God, I used to insist the SU critical crowd was totally misreading the show when they said it was teaching people that resistance was wrong, but WELP GUESS THEY WERE RIGHT ALL ALONG. I used to think the show was so brave and nuanced for saying that Rose didn’t want to kill someone, but sometimes that’s really the only option and you have to hold the needs of the many over your own desire for ideological purity. Now PSYCHE, everything is sunshine and rainbows forever and what’s really important is that we remember genocidal tyrants have feelings too!
(God, I saw red when Blue told the people whose friends she murdered that they “couldn’t understand the grief she’s endured”. The diamonds got the smallest taste of the way they treat other gems on a regular basis, and they act like it is the greatest injustice in all history. Yeah, they deserve sympathy, but not more than their victims.)
Just... I know I said I didn’t want to get into the logistics, but like, the war apparently lasted a thousand years. If Pink’s “shattering” alone was enough to end the war, she could have done that right at the start and spared all those lives. Or she could have just, I don’t know, told her soldiers to stop making Kindergartens? Pink got untold numbers of gems shattered because... why? Because she didn’t want to sacrifice her privilege and power as Pink Diamond until she was in too deep? That’s not “selfish”, that’s monstrous. Yet the show just... doesn’t acknowledge this at all?
But the thing that upsets me the most about this is that it means all the Rose haters are right now.
I could not stand how awful this fandom was to Rose. I hated how disgustingly, brazenly misogynistic it was, aggressively misreading every single thing she did as “proof” for their day 1 assumption that she must be evil incarnate. I thought I loved that, FOR ONCE, the fat, nice, extroverted older woman was exactly as she appeared. What a good message, I thought, to teach kids they shouldn’t assume women are all lying vixens whose kindness exists only for ulterior motives! But no. The uppity fat woman is evil. Why should I have expected anything different.
I’m also bothered by what this means for Pearlrose... I was never bothered by their relationship before; it was flawed but they were believable and reasonable flaws, especially given that we know gems have trouble with empathy. But no, now Pearl is literally Rose’s property and PROGRAMMED TO OBEY ROSE’S ORDERS. The fact that Rose magnanimously chose not to abuse her terrifying, absolute power over her partner does not make that power dynamic go away. That setup is incredibly disturbing and I really, really wish media would stop romanticizing it.
And I really just... do not agree with the apparent fandom consensus that Pearl “started the rebellion” now? I really don’t understand how one can come to that conclusion. It looks to me that Pearl only facilitated what Rose wanted the whole time. I really liked the idea that Pearl and Rose were equal partners in forming the rebellion, that Pearl really was a renegade with her own ideas and agency. But now she was just going along with what Rose wanted the whole time.
It’s just... sad. I feel like I’ve lost something wonderful. I loved Rose Quartz and her terrifying renegade Pearl. (Remember how “my” was supposed to be something you said to someone above you, like the diamonds, and not about ownership?) But now everything I loved about them was a lie.
This all feels like a case of subverting tropes so much you end up in a circle. Rose actually being nice and actually being a Rose Quartz was the twist, to me. It subverted longstanding narrative conceits about gender and class archetypes. By subverting the subversion, we’ve just gone back to “only nobles are allowed to matter” and “women are liars”.
Everything after that has just been so... weird. It honestly feels like the show is parodying itself? It’s just been this sudden whirlwind tour where everyone dumps their feelings on Steven and gets their entire character arcs resolved in a single episode. On the one hand I do like how cheerful it is and how it’s giving us everything we want... but Steven Universe has never been that kind of show. It’s a show where things frequently could not be resolved in 11 minutes with a hug and a pep talk, because it’s a show that tackles heavy and real issues where the hard truth is that there is no easy solution. Like hey, remember when Lapis couldn’t just get over her PTSD when it was convenient for Steven? I loved that episode for how brave it was and what a good message it sent. Now what am I supposed to think?
I just don’t understand what’s going on anymore. Did the writers just burn out? Was the original plan that Rose really did shatter Pink and the executives forced them to change it at the last minute, because murder is unacceptable but a child stepping over a battlefield littered with corpses is peachy keen? What even.
