10 Years of Shapeshifting

On Trans Day of Visibility in 2014, an announcement on Tumblr launched a new chest binder company focused on full customizability, fitting all bodies, and introducing bright color and joyous print to a bland market. Ten years later, Shapeshifters has grown into a true small business with five employees, a professional sewing studio, its own website, and an undeniable influence on the chest binder market as a whole. With over 8,000 customers in over forty countries all over the world, co-owners and founders Eli and Krista Coughlin-Galbraith are grateful to share this huge milestone with the people who’ve made it possible for a small, queer-owned, community-driven business to make it this far.

To mark the occasion, we’re excited to announce the very first exclusive Shapeshifters fashion line: The Cryptid Collection!

Taking inspiration from the weird, the mysterious, and the uncategorizable, The Cryptid Collection is a collaborative design project from Eli and Krista that will feature six of the internet’s favorite cryptids in a variety of new products and projects.

The full announcement, details, and the first round of cryptids will drop on our official 10th anniversary, Trans Day of Visibility, Sunday, March 31, 2024. And keep your eyes peeled for new products and announcements throughout the rest of the year, including opportunities to spy some of these cryptids in person.

This might sound stupid, but what are the characteristics of fairytale ogres, particularly how Charles Perrault describes them?

There is no stupid question on this blog! (Except if someone really pisses me off, then all their questions will be stupid)

It is quite easy to answer this because we only have three ogres in all of Perrault's fairytales, so identifying the main traits is fast. They come from "Puss in Boots", "Little Thumbling" and "Sleeping Beauty". I'll recap shortly.

Eat humans. That's the main trait of an ogre. They eat human flesh, though they don't eat all the humans they see on the spot, mind you. Ogres prefer the flesh when it is young, tender, fresh and pretty. So they prefer pretty young people (Sleeping Beauty) to ugly old ones (that's what spares the ogre's wife, her age, she is too old to be edible). And this is why they go crazy over children, which for them is the most delicious meat. Literaly: the ogres are repeatedly said to be literaly jumping on children as soon as they see them, and to always want to eat them on the spot. (Another ogre trait: they are not very patient beings, and they have a hard time waiting)

Even outside of eating humans, they tend to be food-obsessed people - ranging from Little Thumbling's ogre who eats enormous quantities of food (entire animals to himself), to the ogress-queen who insists on having the most fashionable and delicious sauces with her meals.

Ogres are wealthy, and powerful in a social or political way. People tend to forget this, but the ogres of Perrault range from a literal queen (who was married by the king because of her immense wealth) to a lord who owns so many lands even the king is amazed. We don't know the social class of Little Thumbling's ogre, but he still lives in a large mansion and owns a huge treasure. Insert your joke of "the rich eat the poor" (except ogres also eat the rich - see the Sleeping Beauty case)

Ogres have something magical to them, ranging from owning magical items (Little Thumbling's seven-league-boots) to having actual magical powers (Puss in Boots' ogre is a shapeshifter)

Ogres are wicked and bad people who collect all sorts of vices, but they are all painted as brutal bullies, and as cruel beings who delight in scaring people or making them suffer. Oh yes, and if you cross an ogre, they will hunt you down mercilessly to enact their revenge, because ogres are very vengeful (see the ogre's hunt for Little Thumbling and his brothers, or the ogress' decision to have everybody executed for deceiving her)

When ogres have a family, they have a... very bizarre and complicated set of relationships mixing fear and love and abuse and familial respect. On one side, we have an ogre who is an abusive husband (and yet told to be a good husband enough that his wife loves him very much), and adores his daughters (he only eats them by accident) ; on the other, an ogress who lives peacefully with her husband, who refuses to harm or upset her son (son who both loves her a lot and still fears her), but who wishes to kill on the spot her daughter-in-law and grandkids... Oh and they are known to apparently regularly invite over friends to share their meals (at least if they don't end up devouring the planned meal before the guests arrive)

Are ogres giants? In Perrault's fairytales, no. Everybody knows of Gustave Doré's famous illustrations depicting ogres as giants, but this comes from A) other authors depicting ogres as giants and B) oral/popular/folkloric fairytales and legends mixing ogres and giants. So by the time Gustave Doré illustrated the fairytales, ogres were thought of as giants - but Perrault never writes anything about them being giants, and in the first illustrations of his fairytales they are depicted human-sized. At most he implies that the ogres are big/large/tall/heavy beings, but no different from a big, tall man.

Unlike the modern idea that ogres are inhuman monsters - in Perrault's fairytales, everything indicates that ogres look a lot like humans, and are very close to them. They are inserted in the human society as kings and queens (unlike fairies for example who are "outside" elements), they can crossbreed with humans (and if Sleeping Beauty is any clue, half-ogres looks so much like humans you can't tell they're ogres), and in the case of the ogress-queen, only her intimates know about her ogress nature - the rest is just unconfirmed rumors running around the court. (And Gustave Doré had caught on this, which is why he had his ogres looking like almost regular people). Perrault himself defines ogres in his notes as "wild men/savage men".

The only physical traits Perrault indicates about ogres (beside them having booming voices, and possibly being quite large and big people), are facial traits. They all come from the little ogresses' descriptions in Little Thumbling. Three of them are said to make ogresses "ugly" by 17th century standard - a hooked nose, round grey eyes, and a very large mouth filled with long, spaced-out sharp teeth. A fourth however is said to make them pretty by those same standards - because their diet of meat and flesh gives them a "pretty skin tone/beautiful colors/a healthy skin color".

If the same Little Thumbling fairytale is to be believed, ogre-children start their cannibalistic diets by sucking up the blood of little children. Then they presumably move to eating the children - but in their early years they just bite like vampires.

Oh yes and how could I forget. THE other main defining trait with their gluttonous cannibalism: their sense of smell. Ogres can smell "fresh meat" (la chair fraîche is the consecrated French expression). It is how the ogre of Little Thumbling guesses there are children hiding in his house, he smells them, and the ogress-queen is also said to go randomly go in the courtyard to sniff out animals like a wild beast.

I think these are pretty much the big defining traits of ogres in Perrault's fairytales. Of course, I simplified stuff, but this is the core knowledge to have about what ogres ~ Perrault style ~ are.

Mythical Dreamtale (OSD AU)!

So! Chapter 17 had me really inspired by the whole story @calcium-cat had set up, so naturally, started forming another au. Here's what I came up with!

I haven't come up with separate names for them, but Nightmare is dark matter, the blackness that makes up the negative space in well, space. Dream is a star, and the gases that make one up. They're both quite wispy, and while Nightmare is smooth to the touch Dream is soft, almost fluffy. They can shapeshift, which is a lot easier to do when you have a form of reference, which is why they take the form of animals. They are also Dream Catchers, and will feed on their respective ones to survive. Though another thing they can do is collect Chimeras, lost dreams that have gained sentience. They are formless, though when there collected they tend to take the form that the collector envies or feels the most comfortable in. That's why Dream's and Nightmare's cloaks have deer or crows coming off of them ;3.

The twin's cloaks are purely made up of Chimeras and they usually only come out (shown in the second pick) like that when they and their barer feel content or are afraid and in need of protection. Nightmares are a lot more confident so they tend to show themselves more (the eyes on the cloak).

For the OSD scenario, I'm thinking about two ideas. One is that since dark matter is infinite and stars have an actual cycle, Dream has died of old age and was reborn from his own supernova.

Two is that there was a sort of "apple incident" (this one will be much, much different, it might not even be a tree with apples), and during the mess of feelings Nightmare accidentally killed Dream, who was reborn in the same fashion. Chimera get panicky when fearful so friendly fire isn't that slim of a possibility xD.

Oh and they both can float, Nightmare just doesn't like to go very far off the ground lol.

But yeah that's all I got for now! I might do some different designs for Horror, Cross, Killer, and Dust, and might even have Ink and Error be celestial forces to match the look. Oh my god, whelp I just accidentally made an Outtale Multiverse without even realizing it, whoops. Holy crap I can make Error and Ink soul/world eaters here.

Everything You Need To Know About Standing Ground, the British Brand Making Time-Traveling Garments

Ahead of his London Fashion Week show, the designer offered a look inside his sculptural fashion label, built on Irish mysticism, fantasy classics, and an intuitive approach to craft

Ireland’s standing stones, or dolmens, are the oldest remaining neolithic monuments in the country. For Michael Stewart, the designer behind London-based label Standing Ground, they are portals through time: stoic witnesses to the eons. He recalls taking frequent trips to visit them as a child, enchanted by the centuries-old mysticism buried deep within. “Ireland is a superstitious country, which is a good thing, because the dolmens have been preserved and protected over time,” he muses. “They’re feared in a way, so people don’t dare touch them.”

It’s no secret that Stewart’s spiritual connection to these megalithic tombs informs his brand’s name and modus operandi. Speaking from his new studio at the Sarabande Foundation in East London, he explains that the dolmens possess a transcendent quality, which he projects onto his own statuesque garments: deceptively simple creations that borrow from the futurism of sci-fi and fantasy classics such as Lord of the Rings to imagine evening wear, custom garments, and body ornaments that feel rooted in neither past, present, nor future.

After graduating from the Royal College of Art in 2017, Stewart established Standing Ground in 2022, before attracting the attention of Lulu Kennedy’s Fashion East incubator program, and making his London Fashion Week debut as part of the Spring/Summer 2023 shows.

Remaining loyal to his source material of neolithic artifacts and figures—images of a dolmen and a Saint Brigid’s cross adorn his spare studio walls—he doesn’t have a mood board or sketches, and freely admits to having done no new research since his master’s degree. Instead, Stewart takes an intuitive, and manual, approach to draping, sculpting, and craft, developing his own lines and patterns by hand to produce alien silhouettes that flow from and protect the body like topographic armor.

Stewart is currently working on his third collection for Spring/Summer 2024, which expands on the dialogue between distant pasts and otherworldly futures. “It’s different to what I would’ve presented last February, which was very beautiful, but not as menacing,” he confesses. “I wanted to take some time to figure out what I was doing, and not pigeonhole myself.”

This collection dials back the clock to pre-human times, focusing on primordial, skeletal, and fossilized forms to create uncanny garments that explore the relationship between objects and their surrounding environment. Imagining a world where ancient objects grow and shapeshift across each collection, the designs suggest a speculative place where humankind and nature are mirrors for each other—or, as Stewart puts it: “seeing the body as a landscape and the landscape as a body.”

give yourself some kind of cryptid name! (they usually use a location and monstrous title, but can also be a descriptive name! examples include the jersey devil, loch ness monster, and moth man!)

draw your kintype appearance(s) in a sort of sketchy, creepy, vague “cryptid” or “found footage” style!

get/make cryptid themed clothes and jewellery!

collect or make cryptid themed books, trinkets, art, and decor!

Harumi Hasashi & Emma Liang HC.

Hello, Dearies! I’ve decided to make Emma Liang and Harumi Rose college students to make them different and unique as possible. Also, Abilities/Powers HC, and why did Harumi get red foxes as pets?

🌻 Harumi was walking in the forest. She saw a band of poachers who wanted to steal the foxes and sell them on the black market.

🌻 Harumi immediately sprang into action and beat the poachers senseless with her magic and martial arts. She didn’t kill them though, she only left them unconscious and adopted the red foxes.

🦊🦊🦊🦊The red foxes followed Harumi to the Shirai Ryu clan As if telling her they owed her their lives and they became her friends.

🦊🦊🦊🦊The foxes include two females and two males, Harumi named the two females Kitsu and Akiko, And the two males Hisoka & Jiro.

🌻 When Harumi entered the Shirai Ryu with foxes, Everyone gasped in shock, Her mother wasn’t shocked or anything she knew Harumi loved foxes.

🔥Hanzo was shocked like the rest too, He was even upset, But he came to accept them as a part of the Shirai Ryu.

🦊🦊🦊🦊 The foxes were quiet and friendly. They weren’t mischievous or aggressive. Or anything. Just Like Harumi hoped them to be.

🌻 Harumi built them a lovely, cozy house for them in her room. And the foxes love it.

🌻⭐️ After Harumi & Emma graduated from their high schools. They immediately applied for college and luckily they were accepted into it.

🌻⭐️ Both Emma and Harumi celebrated this occasion with their families, The Celebration took place in Shirai Ryu Clan, It was hosted by Aliyaa and Selviya

🌻⭐️ Before Harumi and Emma left, Harumi informed her mother to take care of the foxes and Aliyaa nodded.

🌻⭐️ Harumi & Emma packed their stuff to go to Osaka College, The nearest and most prestigious college.

🌻⭐️ Before leaving for college, Their families bid them goodbye, Harumi and Emma went to college after that.

🌻⭐️Emma listens to Harumi and stays vigilant when going outside, But her intuition tells her to be careful and stay away from that guy.

🌻⭐️ Emma and Harumi practiced magic since they were young girls and they mastered it. Harumi mastered her fire abilities while Emma mastered her Cryomancy and Celestial magic.

⚫️ The weird guy who had been watching them was none other than Reiko. He wants to collect the kamidogus, He found out the identities of those two women, And he has a malicious plan to achieve his goal.

⚫️ Reiko knew that Harumi was the daughter of Hanzo & Aliyaa, While Emma was the daughter of Kuai Liang and Selviya.

⚫️ He also noted they are no easy prey, They mastered magic and martial arts, So, He would capture them where they least expected it

⚫️ Reiko is a cunning jerk, He shapeshifted himself into a faculty member of the college, And started to teach in Harumi and Emma's class. His professor's identity is Mr. Furukawa.

⚫️He noted this would be the perfect plan to earn their trust and trap them.

⚫️Reiko also noticed that Harumi and Emma are one of the 7 elements, Harumi represents Fire, while Emma represents the Light, The other elements are unknown but he will find them, He also noticed that Harumi is blessed by Amaterasu: The deity of fire and light.

⚫️Reiko is doing an excellent work as their professor. He was teaching the class in his unique way.

- All the students in the college love Professor Furukawa/Reiko. Unfortunately, Harumi and Emma too.

⚫️Reiko is an excellent schemer, So he didn’t try to get close to Harumi and Emma, He earned their trust and that’s enough.

⚫️In Reiko’s office; He has an ancient map of elements that will lead him to the Kamidogus.

🌻Harumi once dreamed of a strange man, A Man with fair skin, a bulky build, weird black markings on his eyes, and black hair with slicked back faux hairstyle. He wore spiky shoulder pads, His chest is semi-naked with only leather straps with a skeleton logo and it's linked to his shoulder pads. The man looked menacing and evil.

🌻Harumi woke up with a scream, scaring Emma in the process.

“Harumi! What’s wrong?” Emma asked with a concerned tone as she came to Harumi.

🌻Harumi wiped the sweat from her brow, she immediately drank a glass of cold water.

“I… I had a scary dream.” Harumi mumbled. Her tone broke. She cannot forget the white rheumy lifeless eyes of Reiko’s.

She knew who is Reiko. And they need to be vigilant and aware.

“Emma!” Harumi suddenly called. “Remember when you said you saw a guy watching us?”

- Emma immediately nodded. “Yeah, I do and he disappeared out of a sudden,” Emma said, while crossing her arms.

🌻Harumi is shocked. She seemed terrified but she calmed herself and pulled herself.

“Emma! That’s Reiko!” Harumi declared her tone was obnoxious and urgent.

“What!” Emma blurted loudly. “No way!”

Harumi nodded. “It’s him,” Harumi muttered.

“We need to be careful, then,” Emma said in a serious tone.

“We definitely need to,” Harumi uttered with urgency. Yet Harumi and Emma don’t know where Reiko is. They are trying to find him and stop him.

⚫️ Reiko knew that Harumi had psychic abilities because of her mother, Aliyaa, He knew Harumi was vigilant and careful. So, He needed to be careful and delicate in his mission.

⚫️However, Reiko used his magic to shapeshift between his real identity and fake one. He masterfully tricked Harumi and Emma and earned their trust.

⚫️Reiko still didn’t reveal himself to Harumi and Emma. He will do it at the right time.

🌻Harumi and Emma enjoy Mr Furukawa’s class so much. He has a charismatic character and he can get everyone's attention immediately.

⚫️🌻 Unfortunately, Reiko took a liking to Harumi and he vowed he’d never harm her or kill her. He will keep her safe and teach her all he knows.

⚫️No one knows why Reiko is after the elementals. Or what are his goals in acquiring them? It is a secret he only knows.

The idea of the barbie movie makes me feel some way that is hard to describe for the same reason a lot of my agender experiences are hard to describe. There's a lot of concrete language, projected expectations, shared understanding of binary gender experiences... but not very much for 'null' experiences.

Nonbinary experiences are muted in general, but often do get described-- in contrast to the binary. Even 'gender-neutral' is usually conceptualized as androgynous, could-be-male-or-female. 'Neither gender' is usually thought of like, 'a secret third thing' rather than 'nothing.'

I grew up disliking barbies because they were a toy my parents didn't prefer. My parents are older, so they saw a lot of cultural shifts: the '60s as kids, the '70s as young adults, the '80s happened as they began to gain stability and had me in the '90s. So the journey from 'baby dolls' to 'fashion dolls' really didn't hit any feminist women-can-be-adults statement to either of them. They were fully awake for Reaganism and how it turbo-boosted femininity as a consumer product. I know that's the opposite of the typical 'my boomer parents' narrative but it's the truth.

So I didn't play with dolls, dress-up or otherwise, much as a child. I found other outlets for that type of play that satisfied me. I played a lot of pretend, I dressed up in my own costumes, I designed characters, I wrote and drew them, and I 'dressed up' avatars in video games. I really didn't feel like I missed anything.

I began questioning my gender more when I had to present more feminine for things like job interviews and for work. I realized that I was playing a role that was not 'me', but dressing up like a doll. You know, not just 'costume time' but 'costume time, with accessories that come in the box.'

It disturbed me for a little while, but eventually I found the idea freeing. For the first time, I was not just 'bad at doing 'girl' but 'someone who can assume the form of a girl' even if the way I acted and felt was just 'me.' It occurred to me that ordinary girls probably didn't feel like they were collecting 'garb' like for a SCA event or a ren faire to go into the city every day. I am going to the party in disguise, I am a shapeshifter, I can Assume The Form You're Comfortable With, impostor syndrome who?

For a lot of people, this would be 'being in the closet.' Or it would be 'girlmoding' or 'boymoding' or whatever. And others might be like, 'it's not trans representation to present as the gender you're assigned at birth!' But it's actually impossible to 'present as' the null. We don't look at the people around us and think 'are they all in costume, pretending? What if they're nothing?'

In fact, conservative power despises this idea and projects it on the most vulnerable people in the queer community. If somebody passes an anti-cross-dressing law, they think they are safe from doubt. But if they went to a wedding and everyone in their gowns and suits told them, we're not men or women, it's dress-up, it would be a nightmare for them.

To me, the idea of 'a doll' is that whatever the plastic looks like, that is not a girl. Ceci n'est pas une pipe, you know?

Azrael

True name: Abel Nicknames: Death, the grim reaper, the angel of death, the shepherd of souls, the prince of purgatory, the son of Adam and Eve Home/Location: Purgatory Age: young adult(biological). He was in his 20s when he died. Personality: Before his murder and transformation into the angel of death, he used to have a personality similar to Charlie Morningstar. Optimistic, compassionate and empathetic to a fault, he always believed the goodness in everyone(including his father and twin brother) no matter how bad they were. That is until Cain betrayed and killed him and it shattered his belief. Not everyone is a good person. Back to the present, Azrael(What he renamed himself now) is now a cynical, jaded and cantankerous yet efficient grim reaper whose job is to claim the souls of those who died and sees it as a necessary public service. He is something of a busy workaholic and always takes his job very seriously. He loves the job not because he enjoys reaping souls but because he enjoys helping and guiding souls to the afterlife. He is very bitter about how his life is cut too short and he never gets the chance to experience a full life(like falling in love, starting a family or dying peacefully of an old age). He admits he envied those who managed to experience a full life and felt sorry for those whose lives were cut too short. Azrael holds life sacred and is disgusted by those who don't treat their own lives with true appreciation or care. He can get very intimidating and dangerous when you get on his bad side. Overall, he still retains his kind-heartedness from his old life and was supportive and loyal to his friends, and an affectionate son and brother to his family. He's intuitive, observant and perceptive, with a sharp eye and a quick mind. Abel grew up appreciating life around him and had many dreams and goals awaiting for him in the future like trying new things, falling in love and starting a family. He even dreams of making a hotel for animals.

Cain became a farmer due to his strength and knowledge of agriculture while Abel became a shepherd due to his love for animals and caring nature. Adam often favors Abel over Cain because he has his looks while Cain doesn’t. This makes Cain envious of his younger brother and begins resenting him.

Cain and Abel would constantly ask their parents where they came from, but Adam and Eve would try and dodge the question. One day however, they realized they couldn't dodge the question any longer so they told their children the truth. They were told that they were created by the angels from Heaven and that they were kicked out of the Garden of Eden after breaking the one rule they had.

Cain became furious from this revelation, and stormed out of the house with Abel not too far behind. They ended up finding their way out into a field, where Abel came up with an idea. Abel stated that they could possibly call upon the angels from heaven by trying to offer them their gifts in the hopes to apologize and be let back into Eden, and with nothing better to do Cain took him up on this.

The next morning, they went to the tallest mountain and prayed to the heavens.

First, Cain tried to offer some of his crops, grass and wheat. They waited for the angels to arrive but they didn't. Then, Abel tried offering up one of his sheep, and to their surprise, it got the attention of the angels. The angels arrived and thanked Abel for the offering. The two brothers watched in awe and bewilderment as the angels took the sheep and flew to the heavens. Cain became frustrated that the angels didn’t accept his offering but Abel suggested they try again tomorrow.

Every day, they would repeat the same thing. Wake up early, go to the highest mountain and pray, offer them with their gifts etc. But the angels always took Abel’s offering instead of Cain’s. Cain’s hatred for Abel grew stronger every day when the angels repeatedly neglected his gift. Abel, on the other hand, got more curious every day and began to wonder why the angels only accepted his offer. He took a look at Cain’s offering and began to realize why. The crops, grass and wheat were not ripe enough. Abel decided to help Cain by farming in secret.

At night when everyone is asleep, he puts on his cloak, takes Cain’s scythe and he sneaks off to the crops to do some farming. But he didn’t know that Cain awoke and went outside to find him farming in his crops. Out of blind fury, Cain picks up a rock and throws it hard at Abel’s head, killing him.

The last thing he knew was a sudden sharp blow in his head and saw nothing but red….

Abel slowly opens his eyes to find himself in a strange realm that is neither Heaven or Hell. It was nothing but darkness and the only light was his new glowing eyes for him to guide the way. Confused, He wanders aimlessly in the darkness, trying to figure himself out why he died and end up in this new realm instead of heaven and hell. Along the way, he encountered ghostly spirits of animals quietly wandering around in this strange new place, confused and scared. Abel felt a wave of sadness when he saw them with no home to go to.

Wanting to help these poor animals, he began to try to think up a plan to find a new home for them. As Abel thought up new ideas to find an afterlife for them, he imagined Eden. Suddenly, a new garden(that looks weirdly similar to the Eden he imagined of) appeared right in front of him and the animals quickly accepted the garden as their new home. He was startled and shocked by his new power to summon the place he imagined when suddenly a scroll appeared in his hand. He opens it and a list of names magically appears in the scroll.

Reading the list from the scroll, Abel finds himself teleporting to the real world. He saw an old fox dying near the tree. As he gently caressed the dying fox, a warm, ethereal light enveloped the soul as it left the fox's body. The fox’s soul, now freed from her mortal body, hovered happily in the air before cozying up in his shoulders.

Abel smiled as he glanced at the ghostly fox resting on his shoulders and a portal to the realm opened up in front of him. With a soft whisper, he guided the soul of the fox towards the realm he had discovered earlier, where the garden awaited. The soul of a fox hesitated for a moment, looking back at Abel with gratitude before stepping through the portal, disappearing into the serene landscape beyond.

Feeling a sense of fulfillment in guiding the fox's soul, Abel understood the gravity of his newfound responsibility. He glanced at the scroll in his hand, realizing that it held the names of souls whose time on Earth had come to an end. Each name on the scroll represented a life that had ended, and it was now his duty to ensure their transition to the next realm.

Suddenly, he saw Cain walking towards the tallest mountain. Abel was delighted to see his brother again. He ran up to him and was about to hug him…only for his fingers to pass right through Cain, as if he was a ghost. Abel was shaken by this revelation but what was more shocking is when Cain quietly muttered something about killing his brother. That is when Abel finally finds out who killed him. It was none other than his beloved brother, Cain!

Heartbroken by the betrayal, Abel wanted to cut ties with his old mortal life and decided to shed his old name and become something more. From that on, he was no longer Abel, the kind but naive human shepherd who always looked up to his brother. Instead he renamed himself as Azrael, the grim reaper and the ruler of the new realm called Purgatory.

Embracing his new identity as Azrael, he accepted the responsibility bestowed upon him and set forth on his journey, traversing the mortal world to claim the souls of the departed.

Despite the bitterness and sorrow that lingered within him for the life he had lost, Azrael found solace in his ability to offer comfort and guidance to those who passed on. Though he could never experience the joys and sorrows of mortal life himself, Azrael found fulfillment in his duty to guide souls towards their final destination.

During the first years, It was just the souls of the animals. That is until many, many years later, he collected his first soul of a human…his dad. It was a ball-like object containing his dad’s soul. After reading the instructions from the scroll, He threw his father’s soul up into the sky and watched as his dad’s soul floated up into the sky, going to heaven.

Over the centuries, Azrael continued his work and learned to embrace his role as Death. With each passing soul, Azrael learns about the souls of humans. If the soul of a human is coloured gold and was destined for Heaven, he threw the soul up into the sky. If the soul of a human is coloured red and destined for Hell, he threw it down into the ground.

Though his path was fraught with challenges and hardships, Azrael remained steadfast in his commitment to serve as a beacon of light in the darkness, guiding souls towards their eternal rest.

Trivia: 1. Cain and Abel are twins in my version(With Cain being a few minutes older than Abel). They were conceived when Lucifer possessed Adam and he had an affair with Eve. In other words, that makes Adam and Lucifer both their fathers. Cain takes more of Lucifer’s looks while Abel takes more of Adam’s looks. 2. His presence is completely invisible to mortals except the animals, children, babies and those who are close to death. 3. He rules over a realm called Purgatory where ghosts with unfinished businesses and souls of deceased animals live. 4. He can grow wings that are similar to angels but they are pure black. 5. The reason he shed his old name and renamed himself Azrael is because he wanted to forget his old, worthless human life and remind himself that he was no longer Abel the human son of Adam and Eve but Azrael the angel of death. 6. A true animal lover. Not only is he a very devoted shepherd in life, but he kept the souls of deceased animals in his realm where they live happily in his garden. 7. He owns a horse named Ghost and an enormous herd of sheep to keep him company. They weren’t just ordinary sheep, they were the spirits of the deceased sheep and the caretakers of his castle. They take over his duties whenever he gets too stressed out and needs to relax. 8. His castle includes a library, a cinema-sized home theatre, an art studio, a music room, a pool, an aquarium, and the most ginormous garden you have ever seen(this is where the souls of the deceased animals live). 9. His garden is an almost replica of Eden. 10. He loves children and babies as much as he loves animals. That is mainly because he never gets a chance to be a dad. He died before he could start a family and have children of his own. 11. He is nonbinary and biromantic demisexual. 12. Underneath his mask and hood, he looks like Adam but with longer hair, a much skinnier figure, darker skin, a scar on his head and glowing blue eyes. His strong resemblance to his father is the main reason why Adam favours Abel over Cain. 13. His favourite colour is blue. 14. When not working, he spends his time gardening, reading, drawing/painting/sketching, playing his piano, singing, baking/cooking, playing puzzles, listening to music, watching movies/TV shows and taking care of the animals in his realm. “Aswang Skin” (long sleeve) by Jean Louie Castillo Fashion collection “FEAR CESSATION” 2021-2.

This garment was designed with the intention of embodying the idea of ‘fear’ through the exploration of Filipino folklore’s Aswang phenomenon: the a shapeshifter or personification of fear. The designing period of FEAR CESSATION involved in-depth introspective views on what it means to feel ‘fear’, so I plagued my research with personal phobias and things that made my skin crawl.

The most debilitating phobia of mine is Trypophobia, clusters of holes and stripes. Groups of natural-looking, minuscule hell holes. I have never understood why this affects me so appallingly. Just thinking of it makes me unwell and want to scream. I’m sure many others feel the same way. I thought that by the end of project FEAR CESSATION, my phobia would cease or at least neutralise - I was wrong.

The Aswang Skin Long Sleeve is a beautiful outcome from such an unspeakable phobia. The garment doesn’t not nauseate me for some reason - perhaps it’s that I’m the one who made it and I know it can’t hurt nor infect me. All my life I’ve been scared of acquiring deathly infections with holes and lumps on the surface of my skin. Dermatitis is bearable but still not something I need or want on my body. (Research reference: Sick Rose by Richard Barnett, Thames & Hudson). Fatal bacteria and germs that inhabit these clusters of holes and lumps are my idea of literal hell. This is a personal phobia I’ve dealt with my entire life and it doesn’t seem to go away; constant hand sanitisation, mask wearing and avoidance of skin to skin contact with strangers still isn’t enough for me. I want to swim in concentrated bleach to know that I’m pure and thoroughly sterilised.

With this garment, I’ve managed to become a philocalist of trypophobia… (only for a second) if you look past the revolting clusters and the logical meaning that there are millions of deadly inhabitants writhing inside, then you’ll see the beauty in repetition of lines, circles and dots in textile form. The stretch cotton long sleeve has pintucks (fabric manipulation) on the sleeves and torso, the worst places to be infected, if so, with black fabric paint to enhance the trypophobia appearance. If you’re a fashion fan, you’ll see the Margiela reference through the silhouette (Martin Margiela, Sock Sweater, AW91). This piece, stylistically, is a heavy nod and a love letter Martin Margiela (my saviour).

The Cryptid Collection

NO, THIS IS NOT AN APRIL FOOL'S JOKE! THE TIMING JUST WORKED OUT THAT WAY BECAUSE OUR ANNIVERSARY IS TDOV, WHICH WAS MARCH 31ST THIS YEAR. (￣y▽,￣)╭

In case you missed, it, yesterday, we officially launched The Cryptid Collection!

Since it was the weekend and a major holiday, we decided to put off talking much about it outside of our website. But now it's Monday, so it's time to talk cryptids (even though we everyone is distracted by boops).

The Cryptid Collection is a collaborative design project created by co-owners Eli and Krista (hi, it's us, we're the main contributors to this Tumblr) exclusively for Shapeshifters. The collection has four main components: binders and sports bras made with fabrics of our own design, the fabrics which you can purchase for your own projects through Spoonflower, the vintage style travel posters, and the couture fashion looks which you can see in person at fashion shows across New England this year which will be listed on our Events Page as we confirm them.

While the collection was inspired by cryptids in general, we decided to spotlight six in particular: Mothman, Champ, the Jackalope, the Squonk, the Jersey Devil, and the Fresno Nightcrawler.

We'll talk more about them and why we chose those cryptids in particular later in the week. Today, we want to talk about the who, what, where, when, why, and how of The Cryptid Collection and cryptids in general.

You may be asking: Why a fashion collection?

It was originally Eli's idea. It had been something they'd been fantasizing about for a few years now, almost as long as Shapeshifters has been in business. The realization that it was something we could potentially really do didn't come until Fall of 2023, though, when we started talking about how to celebrate our 10th anniversary. We wanted to do something special, something that we'd never done before, and Eli decided it was time for both of us to finally admit that, after ten years of making and designing clothing and and graphic art, we might actually be qualified to call ourselves and present ourselves as Designers.

So, a themed fashion collection.

But while it was their first and only answer when Krista asked what they wanted the theme to be, Eli didn't come up with the cryptid idea entirely on their own. Anyone who's been following Krista's artblr, @3ofpents, has probably seen the vintage travel posters she's been designing since Summer of 2023. Originally inspired by a book of color palettes from print media through the 20th century, the posters started out as a personal challenge to get Krista drawing more often.

The very first poster she designed was for the New Jersey Pine Barrens and the Jersey Devil, inspired by the state she grew up in. But the one that Eli cites as the one that really got them thinking was for our home state: Burlington, VT's own Champ.

"The tagline for that one was You’ll never swim alone. The friendly, ominous, terrible, wonderful mystery embedded in those four words is a vibe I think about a lot." —Eli

Krista's choice of cryptids as a subject for her posters, and the well of inspiration she drew from in designing her parts of this collection, stemmed from her childhood in New Jersey. While the Jersey Devil isn't as popular and well-known as some other regional cryptids like Mothman and the Loch Ness Monster, it is a huge part of New Jersey culture. Every kid in the state grows up learning some version of the Jersey Devil's origin story; and the local indie, alt, underground, punk cultures slap Jersey Devil imagery on their posters, logos, and products the way some states use their state shapes.

"In New Jersey, the story of the Jersey Devil holds a similar kind of legendary local pride as the story of George Washington crossing the Delaware River on Christmas Eve to take the British soldiers camping on the other side by surprise." —Krista

Eli's inspiration is coming in a separate post; cryptids can't be anything but queer, as far as they're concerned.

In typical me fashion my presents to people are almost always monster designs and today is no different, have Eme and Iris monster designs :D

Eme's eyes don't really open, I don't think he has an issue getting around at all but generally his eyes are almost always closed. He does have very good hearing and other senses. It's not easy to tell if he can also see somehow or if he just uses his other senses.

This design for Iris is her natural state, she never shows her natural face but she has a collection of masks she often switches out. However, she can shapeshift into more solid-appearing forms with startling detail.

I fell in love with @pdrrook Perfumare VN and IFs. While I'm still looking forward to seeing the rest of the story in Perfumare: Amalgam. I also got excited learning about the sequel Perfumare: Amalgam and came up with some concept art and info for my Shapeshifter MC, Gloria Jardin. I'm kind of jumping the gun ik, but I couldn't help it! I'm not sure how things will play out for Gloria, so I'll probably wind up having multiple routes saved like I did for my Allure MC, Liz Morren. Here's my info for Gloria so far. I'll probably wind up changing things once the sequel is officially released.

Appearance: A tall ethnically mixed woman, in her late twenties with a chestnut complexion and a dancer's build. A square shaped face with a cleft chin, full mouth and brown almond shaped eyes, her natural hair is black and coily, but as a Shapeshifter she can change her hair and eye color whenever it suits her mood. As does her fashion sense, and she's collected a pretty eclectic wardrobe over the years, depending on her mood and the occasion. From sleek suites paired with colorful avant-garde accessories to more theatrical clubbing outfits that could rival a Las Vegas show girls costume. Although she usually wears some sort of accessory or stylistic touch that has feathers or resembles swans.

Notable Features: A little gap in her front teeth, and long toned legs.

Personality: Gloria comes across as a classy, confident, intelligent and vibrant woman. Although it would surprise people to learn she went through an “ugly duckling” phase as a child. Considering the expectations put on her by her family growing up, she always felt like she never quite fit. In a way her childhood was similar to Laurent's trying so hard to be the “dutiful child ” to meet expectations and approval, and yet she was miserable. Although being away from her family ment Gloria finally got a chance to do things for herself and learn who she was as a person. Discovering she was Tier 4 Shape Shifter was kind of a relief actually. Well mostly she's still under watch from the government considering higher tier Shapeshifter's can potentially impersonate important people like government officials ect.

Although despite the fact that her gift is often associated with subterfuge and misdirection, Gloria herself tends to be a pretty honest person. She's wasted so much of her childhood trying to be what others wanted her to be, and it made her miserable. She's done with that bs, and she's not going to apologize for existing anymore! Although she does have enough class to recognize and apologize if she hurts someone. Even unintentionally by saying something thoughtless or blunt. Also, she still keeps enough social etiquette to show restraint when necessary. Although this does make her appreciate the fact she can take an animal from more. For Gloria, being able to turn into a Swan is cathartic, as she's not bound by the same rules as polite society if even for a little bit. She can fly, swim, and even bite people who piss her off.

Many people are often surprised to learn that she's friends with Alois Becker aka Marco and considers him like family. While Gloria did have a party girl phase and often went out dancing with Marco, she usually tries to keep him from doing anything too reckless that could get him seriously hurt. Although Gloria is fully capable of causing her share of havoc, she just prefers to be more discreet by Shape shifting into her swan form. While swans are very elegant and graceful birds, they have a huge wingspan and have been known to bite, so she can still do some serious damage if so inclined.

Thankfully, she's usually not as aggressive and reckless as Marco, although she sometimes feels more like an older sister/ young stepmother just trying to keep him from accidently getting himself killed. Although Marco will sometimes complain about Gloria becoming less “fun” as they've gotten older he appreciates the fact she cares enough to try, and the fact she's the only person who's always honest with him. Even though it means he usually gets roasted for being an idiot.

Headcanons & Additional info

Her name is a reference to a brand of perfumes, specifically Gloria Vanderbilt's Jardin à New York, which has a Swan debossed on the bottle. 

When it comes to her personal scent preferences, Gloria likes to use classic floral perfumes, particularly ones that smell like Gardenia.

Her Swan form is based on Mute Swans. Although she has been known to also take the form of Cygnet, since baby swans are so cute and fluffy. Perfect for when she wants others to lower their guard or needs to squeeze into smaller spaces. 

Gloria has always been fond of dancing and even took ballet lessons for many years. It's actually how she first met and befriended Alois/Marco. They were enrolled in the same dance class and performed well together when partners. Even during Gloria's party girl phase, she often helped choreographed dance routines for the clubs that made them both the life of the party. 

This also unfortunately fed into some of those “gold digger” rumors about her. Alois/Marco always likes to make an entrance, and what better way to ensure an audience than to show up with a tall, gorgeous woman who could pass for a model. Even though he only sees Gloria as a friend and sister figure, he's more than happy to play wingman, and likewise, Gloria is sociable enough to introduce him to actual super models. He can also act as protection in case drunken creeps try to hit on Gloria and don't take rejection well, which is sadly often. Alois/Marco's efforts to keep Gloria safe wind up unintentionally damaging her social reputation. Since many of these creeps also come from well-off families and don't get the fact that Gloria prefers Alois/Marco's company because he's her friend and respects her personal boundaries. They just assume she's only with him because he's got more money and/or his family owns the club.

Since Shapeshifters often have to thoroughly study an animal before they can take its shape, Gloria winds up developing an interest in swans and other birds. She has become a bit of an amateur Ornithologist and can even accurately mimic bird calls.

Gloria also has a love of learning and academics and in addition to being taught French by her family, she's become fluent in speaking, reading and writing many classical languages as well; Arabic, Chinese, Greek, Latin and Sanskrit.

She probably winds up getting a job in an academic field, which can be exciting for Gloria because she gets to learn so many new and fascinating things and earn new doctorates. It also means she struggles to be taken seriously since she's a lot younger than others in her field, not to mention it's difficult to get resources for research unless she's studying a subject that already has government funding, or wealthy patrons deem profitable. Not to mention her reputation for honesty means she often butts heads with higher ups on things like censorship and propaganda.

YES! so pre godhood his homeplanet had a whole fuckup resulting in it being taken over by a strain of geneticaly modified parasitic wasps, he'd ..dated one of these wasps for a period of time before they got into a fight and lyman got assimilated into the hivemind. He also can shapeshift though not to the degree of scarab. He refuses to ever have a human form and will opt to shapeshift into a horse instead. I see a ton of Witchtoks/people who only give a basic summary of what to research along with a ton of books and I'm more of a bullet point girl. So... Here we go.

A book of shadows was coined by Alaisar Crowley, alongside garnder who was the founder of Wica, then changed to Wicca later on [I will go in depth in history with links/sources and more detail on another post]

So here's the index for a book of shadows, full of all things you the individual want to learn include in your practice and like Pirates of the Caribean, take it more as guidlines and you're free to decide what you like/don't like.

So Include a Book Of shadows Blessing in the begging of your book [or digital document] And a BOS is like a diary, only you can see it or your coven.

Beginner Studies; Introduction to Witchcraft. I.e: What is Paganism, Wicca, Witchcraft? What is the difference? Wicca History: Origins in your country of origin. [usually used as protection AGAINST the evil eye]

Witch Tools: Witch tools you use, or place on your altar. Like an Athame, cualdron, wand, etc Tools of Divination: Pendulum, spirit board, tarot, angel cards, scrying mirror, playing cards, etc Additional tools: Candles. Crystals. Elements Herbs Chakras/Meditation Lucid Dreaming Astral projection Milk baths

*ALSO IMPORTANT! CLOSED/OPEN Practice! Wicca as it is is open, you can buy a wicca book/watch withtok who have you whatever whatever! But a closed practice? Thats a religion or something you CANNOT access too UNLESS you are invited in, or iniated into that group! Indeginous tribes/jewish traditions/hoodoo/voodoo/ etc. A closed practice is a closed door. You cant access that by yourself. Which is why White sage cant be used, theres many alternatives and other incenses/sages to burn. Not the one thats sacred/endangered and used speicifially in indeginous tribes. They've already had enough taken away from them what do witches need white sage for in this current enviromental crisis? so yeah...
