The Coffee is Not the Murder Weapon
Tumblr media
Pairing: Shawn Spencer x Plus!size!reader Characters: Plus!size!reader (aka Beans), Shawn Spencer, Burton “Gus” Guster, Carlton Lassiter, Juliet “Jules” O’Hara, Woody, Greg (the murderer), Buzz McNab (briefly mentioned) Warnings: Mentions of guns and bullets, violence, this man Greg is crazy, coffee shops should not be a place for murder plots, Woody being “prepared”, okay plot but stay for the fluff, friends to lovers, my love for writing for these peps returns Word Count: 2,466
A/N: Bad plot but I tried, and it didn’t turn out completely horrible so yay. Yes, I’m giving myself a pat on the back, don’t judge me :p
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Push on the gas, Lassie or else someone is going to get hurt and it’s not gonna be me,” Shawn says, his voice elevated as he thinks about what could happen.
“What’re you talking about, Spencer?”
“Shawn, calm down and tell us what’s going on,” Juliet tried to reason with him.
“No! I can’t- I- you just gave to trust me on this.”
“If you want us to trust you, you have to explain what’s going on. Do you feel something?”
“Oh my god,” Gus says, after Shawn hands him the phone. “Floor it, Lassiter!”
“Why?!”
Shawn rubs his hands across his face. “The barista did it. We were wrong about the manager being poisoned.”
Juliet furrows her brows, trying to make sense of the words flying out of the psychic’s mouth. “But Woody said-”
“He-”
“He’s calling me,” Gus announces, showing his friend the phone.
Shawn quickly snatches it out of his buddy’s hand, answering it.
“Shawn, you’ll never believe the story I overheard last night when I was at the bar. So, this girl, who was close to turning thirty, although I think she was lying. Anyway, she was saying-”
“The barista did it with one of those skinny tongue depressors.”
“Yes! It never ceases to amaze me how well your skills are.”
The psychic tosses the phone up in the air for his friend to catch.
“Sounds like we have the right to arrest someone.” Carlton speeds up, maneuvering himself, safely, between cars. “Where am I going, Spencer?”
“Where do you think?”
“If I knew, do you think I’d be asking you?”
“The coffee shop. Beans told me she had a shift, and our killer does too. She put it together before my visions became clearer. If we don’t get there within the next five minutes, it’s going to be a manhunt and I’ll be the first in line.”
“We’re not going to let anything happen to her,” Juliet tells him.
“I’ll believe it when I can see that she’s safe.”
“Sha-”
“We’re here. Spencer, I’m only going to say this once and only once. Do not and I mean, do not go in there.”
“But, I can-”
“No,” Carlton tells him before he and Juliet rush out of the car, standing by the front door with their guns in front of them before they sneak into the building.
-
“I’m going in.”
“Oh, no you are not,” Gus slams his hand onto the door lock.
“Yes, I am.”
“Sha- Shawn.” Gus makes the noise people typically make when trying to call a cat over, “psst. Psst. Shawn, no.” He gets out of the car when he realizes his friend isn’t going to follow him back towards the safety.
The two make their way into the building, sneaking through the front door, only pausing when they hear a strange noise.
“Are we really going to go in there, Shawn? I mean, what if he has a gun or some other weapon?”
“That’s when you selflessly throw yourself in front of our bad guy while I, the hero, save the day.”
“I don’t like that plan.”
“Well, it’s the only one I have so far.”
“No, it’s not.”
“Fine, it’s not but this one makes us both look like heroes.”
“I understand why you’re making jokes, but we need a real plan if we want to make sure Beans doesn’t get hurt.”
The psychic sighs, “I know, Gus.” He leans off the wall, glancing back over his shoulder. “I have a plan.”
“What is it?”
“You stay here and I’m gonna make a distraction.”
“Okay- wait! What?” He turns around, finding his friend nowhere near him. “Dammit Shawn.”
-
Shawn walks around the corner, hearing clattering coming from the back and rushes forward only for you to duck behind the counter.
“Shawn?” You stare at him with furrowed brows. “Duck. Duck.”
“Duck?” He dives to the floor when bullets come flying through the door, breaking the glass window. He wraps his arms around you, covering your head as he pulls you closer, making sure nothing happens to you.
Once the firing stops, you lift your head off his shoulder.
“Do you know the way out of here?” He whispers.
“We won’t make it without being seen. Why are you here alone?”
“I remembered you told me this place has a really weird back entrance, so it takes a few minutes to get in here. If we stall him long enough, then maybe we can make it out of this alive while Lassie and Jules do their thing.” He stops talking and becomes quiet. “I have an idea.”
“You are not going to try and make a conversation with him. Are you?”
“It’s called a distraction.”
“A terrible one, at that.”
“I could do it.”
You glance over his shoulder.
“He’s right behind me, isn’t he?”
You gulp, nodding. Your former coworker, Greg, grabs your arm, yanking you away from your friend.
“Hey. Hey! Let her go.”
Greg shakes his head, “no, I don’t think I will.” He forces you into the nearest chair.
“You don’t need to need to manhandle Beans like that.”
“It’s her fault.”
“What’s her fault?”
“Ruining my plan and you, the psychic coming around wasn’t any help either.”
“It sounds like you have a problem with me and not-”
He waves the gun around in Shawn’s face. “You stay over there. She stays here.”
You tense up at the feeling of the metal on the back of your head.
He nods. “I’m staying over here. You don’t need to keep waving the gun around.”
“Santa Barbara PD, drop your weapon,” Carlton says, keeping his attention on Greg.
“I don’t think I will.”
“You sure you want to do that?”
“Why not? I’ve got a hostage right here,” he steps to the side, letting the officer get a view of your back.
“Let the civilians go so we can talk.”
“No,” he clicks the trigger of the gun.
You close your eyes, trying not to shake as you hear everything going on behind you.
“No,” Shawn takes a step closer, and everyone’s focus turns onto him. “Remember it was me. I’m the psychic, I know why you did it. He wasn’t giving you the proper respect, right? And he should have, you’re the one who made sure everything ran smoothly around here especially when he would take his sporadic trips. You did everything he should have done and he- he-”
“He was gonna fire me and give my job to Janet, but she put it in her two weeks’ notice after that and then she,” he spits in your direction. “Was the next one.”
“And, you believe she would have taken your job without hesitation?”
Greg nods.
Shawn nods before he starts to chuckle. “And that’s when you need to listen or pay attention to all employees because she’s a very kind woman who would never do that and I’m lucky to know... that took a minor detour, I’ll admit but it just proves that she isn’t what you created in your mind.”
“Are you done?” Carlton asks.
“Hmm? Oh, yeah.”
That’s all the detective needed to hear as he takes another step forward. “Let her go.”
“I don’t think I will.”
“Greg.”
“What are you doing?” Shawn whispers.
“Do you know why our boss would take sudden trips?”
“Yeah. He’s a greedy bastard who wants to blow away his money.”
“No, his wife is sick, and she’s been in a home that specializes with her condition. She has her good days and her bad days, so when it’s not looking good, he rushes over there in case it’s going to be his last time with her.”
“Really?” He jerks your arm. “How do you know?”
“He told me because I found him crying in the storage closet when it was my turn to close the shop a few months ago. He trusted you, that’s why he was confident with you being in charge.”
He lowers his hand.
Shawn sees the way you’re eyeing your coworker and shakes his head.
Greg drops his gun.
You take this as your opportunity to run away from him before anything else could happen.
Shawn pushes you behind him.
Juliet and Lassiter do their thing, arresting him just as Gus rushes in, holding a broom as his weapon of choice.
“Nice timing, Guster,” Carlton tells him as he passes by to put the, now, arrested man in the nearest squad car, which of course happens to be Buzz’s.
“Is he gone?”
“Yes, Gus. He’s gone, you can stop now.”
The frightened man takes notice of the scene and slowly sets the broom down before sniffing as he wipes his nose. “I knew that; I was just testing you.”
“No, you weren’t,” you chime in.
“I’m gonna let that slide for right now.”
“You’re so nice, Gus.” You groan, holding your side. “I think it’s time for me to get checked out.”
Two paramedics run in, asking which of three needs to be checked out.
All three of you answer, informing the gentleman that it’s you. Once they make sure you’re all good, they give you one last recommendation to get a full check up at the hospital to make sure you’re all good and don’t have any underlying injuries they may not have caught.
You wave them off, “yeah, yeah,” your words fine out slurred before you pass out.
The whole way there, everyone was worried about you, Shawn more than the others.
-
Henry walks into the room, placing a hand on his boy’s shoulder. “When was the last time you left the room?”
“Not once.”
“You need to eat something, Shawn.”
The psychic doesn’t say anything else.
“You know, you need to eat something if you want to confess to her.”
“Confess what?”
“I raised you better than to play dumb, Shawn.”
The younger man gets up out of his seat. “Fine, so maybe I do know what you’re talking about but why would I-”
“Shawn.”
“No, no. Don’t distract me.”
“Shawn.”
“Why are you-”
“Shawn.”
“What?”
Henry sighs and spins his son around, leaving his boy to get the girl.
“Oh, you’re up.”
“I am.”
He grabs the water by your bed and holds for you.
“I can drink water on my own.”
He nods, slowly placing the cup in your hands.
“How are you?”
“Shouldn’t I be asking you that?”
You set the cup down onto the table. “You could but, you’re antsy and an antsy Shawn isn’t a good Shawn.”
“Funny.”
“Usually, you’d have some witty comeback when I say things like that, what’s going on in your head?”
“You could have died.”
“But I didn’t.”
“But you could have.”
“I didn’t though.”
“But… you could have and- and-”
You slowly push yourself up, reaching out for his hand, bringing him closer.
He’s careful as he sits down beside you.
“What would have happened, if it did happen? Can you find it in you to explain that bit to me?”
“You mean, other than the fact that the woman I’ve been in love with since we were kids would be dead, not much.”
“Wha-” Your jaw drops.
“I wouldn’t have been able to come up with a clever plan and pretend like I didn’t know how it happened even though you know when I’m lying.”
“So, what you’re saying is you like me and you want to ask me out?” You ask, a sly smile dancing across your lips.
“Maybe.”
“Good.”
“That’s it?”
“Yep.”
“I feel like there’s something else you have planned.”
“Yeah, you’re gonna go find my doctor, ask when I can leave so then you can take me out on our date and fall asleep on my couch.”
This is the first time he’s smile since this morning, and it feels great. “Don’t move.”
“I won’t.”
Woody rushes in with a black bag.
You raise a brow. “Did you really think I was dead?”
“Wha- oh this,” he points to the bag. “No, no. I was just- I thought I needed to be prepared.”
“Get out.”
“I’m the one who brought the flowers.” He points with a weak smile.
“Thank you, they’re beautiful but get out.”
“Yep, got it.” Woody manages to move out of the way before he could bump into Shawn and your doctor and continues to run out of the building.
-
You and Shawn had a wonderful time getting dinner (with Gus driving so you could pick up the food) and dropping you guys off at your place (after being told he wasn’t invited).
“If I’m not a part of this date, why did I drive you two to go pick up jerk chicken?”
Shawn shrugs, “sorry, buddy.”
You jab your elbow into his side, “I don’t know. I’m sorry, he used you. How about tomorrow we all go out and get breakfast before we head over to the station?”
“Thank you, I think that would be a great idea.” Gus doesn’t move from his spot.
“Do you want to take some for the road?”
“This is why I like you.”
“You’ve liked me being around since we met, I used to pretend you weren’t involved in whatever it was he,” you point to Shawn. “Was doing so you wouldn’t get suspended.”
“And that’s exactly why I’m happy he’s partially your problem now.” He takes his napkin wrapped portions and waves you two off before he leaves.
“Can we go upstairs now? It’s getting cold.”
“Quite whining and maybe you’ll get a blanket.”
-
He leans against the doorway as he waits for you to pull out your keys. “Is there anyway, I could persuade you?”
The doorknob clicks, you open the door and smile at him. “No.”
“I think you’re lying.”
“Your psychic abilities tell you that?”
“Maybe.”
You roll your eyes and step inside. “Come on, I’m hungry and I’m not afraid to take the food from you.”
“But then you’d have a starving man in your home, rummaging through your fridge searching for a pineapple.”
“I’m not afraid to take that risk.”
“Rude.”
You chuckle, “hurry up and get over here. We can watch a movie.”
“I’m getting us some drinks. I can’t die of thirst after fulfilling my need of food.”
“Okay.”
“And here is your drink,” he sets them down on the coffee table. “And your food.”
You practically snatch the food from him. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
“I mean… for everything that’s happened.”
He settles on the couch beside you, turning for you to see his soft smile. “I know.”
You shake your head. “You’re so cocky.”
“Only for you.”
“I feel like I should be ending things here.”
“But you’re not. You love me too much.”
“Shush and watch the movie.”
He smiles to himself, knowing he’s made you all flustered.

The house where Dana was found is owned by another person, obviously, who may or may not know the history of the house. If you're going to want to look at the cellar, then you have to be delicate with this in hopes the owner doesn't reject you.
Maybe that's why Hotch wanted you with him so you could do the talking.
"Shawn Overholt?" Hotch says once the man opens the front door. "I'm Agent Hotchner. This is Agent Rossi and Agent Y/N. We're with the FBI."
"You lived here for four years, right?" you ask.
"Yeah."
"I assume disclosures were made at the time of sale about what occurred here?"
"Yeah." Shawn closes the front door and steps outside to talk privately. "My son doesn't know about that, and I prefer to keep it that way."
"Of course. We understand. We'll be discreet. We just need to take a look at your cellar if you wouldn't mind."
"Right this way."
Shawn leaves his porch and takes you three to the side of the house where the entrance to the cellar is. It's overgrown with weeds and other plant life, but the doors are still operational and accessible. Shawn takes out his keys and unlocks the rusty lock.
"I've had it locked up since we moved in. It's kind of useless, anyway. It floods when it rains, it's really damp, and all the electrical's messed up. I hope you guys don't mind if I stay up here."
"We'll try not to take too long."
Shawn leaves you three to it and returns back to his son. Since the electrical doesn't work, you can assume that the lights won't turn on. You take out your phone and use the flashlight built into it to light your way since you don't have a flashlight on you. The cellar is musty, smells dirty, and is very creepy with what little light is seeping in.
"So, he's done with the tour of the main house. Before he goes, he asks the realtor to see the cellar. That's where he gets her."
"Contusion on the back of her head says he surprised her. He incapacitated her with a blunt object."
"Did you notice the neighbors? They were few and far between. She could have screamed as loud as she wanted, and they wouldn't have heard her," you state. "There were also rope burns on her wrists. He probably suspended her."
"He did it here," Rossi says, pointing to a thick wooden beam running across the top of the ceiling. "It's like in his drawings, and then he applied the current and watched her whole body spasm. He makes her dance."
"Where did he get the juice from? Cattle prod? Taser?"
"From the outlet," you say and point your flashlight at the tampered outlet. There are wires coming out of it as if the unsub messed with it to grab power from the house. "It's jerry-rigged. The clamp is still there. He didn't have to use a taser. He pulled power from the house."
"Handy guy."
You stand up and turn to the beam to get a closer look at it, but you see a naked woman hanging from the beam. You gasp and back up into Rossi, scaring the shit out of you. You scream and jump back, putting a hand to your racing heart.
"Are you okay?"
You turn back around to the woman, but she is gone.
"I saw Dana, but she's gone now. Sorry, I got scared. I'm okay."
This was the place the unsub killed the real estate woman, so there is no need for you to be here. After letting Shawn know you're done, you three head back to the police station. Rossi briefed the other half of the team. Spencer is on the phone with Penelope to figure out if there had been any murders in the same area or int he same fashion as Dana, and he places her on speakerphone so she can talk to everyone.
"There are three females ages thirty-one to thirty-eight that were discovered off freeways in Maryland, Jersey, and New York. All naked with burn wounds consistent with the signature. He disposed of all of the bodies in different states to avoid detection."
"Garcia, when were these bodies discovered?"
"Between '02 and spring of '03."
"After the real estate agent, he changed his methods," you observe. "He's a fast learner. Four kills by the age of thirty. Seems like he was just getting started."
"We connected three new bodies with missing person cases. So, with a total of four victims on the board, we were able to narrow down the unsub's type," Spencer says. "All women in their thirties, attractive, caucasian, and upwardly mobile. They are all college graduates, above-average income, and career women."
"Did you establish a cycle?" Jill asks.
"There was ten months between the realtor and the first of these victims. Then seven months, then three months."
"He's practically doubling his pace every time."
"As with most prolific killers, the cooling-off period tends to shorten after each murder. The last known victim was found almost five years ago."
"Five years? So, could he have stopped?" Jill wondered.
"Not this guy. It's possible we haven't found the bodies yet. He's been killing and getting away with it for five years."
"There might not even be bodies, per se," Spencer says in regards to your comment. "We know he wrote extensively about creating a homemade incinerator."
"So, how many are we talking, ballpark?"
"If you extrapolate the cycle in the last five years, he will have killed approximately nineteen more women."
"It's great stuff, guys. Keep me posted."
Jill leaves, and you narrow your eyes in suspicion. She is acting like she is in charge of this entire thing and you're only here to work under her. She really wants to catch this guy, and it's clear she will do anything to catch this guy. She's an open book, and you're reading her as if she is a children's book.
"She's too cocky," you reveal to your team members excluding Rossi and Hotch who are not in the room. "She wants to be the best even if that means cutting corners to do so."
"She does know we don't work for her, right?" Derek asks.
"Looks like we have a working profile, so I'll let Hotch know we're ready."
You get up and inform Hotch that you're ready to start, but Jill doesn't want to be part of this. She seemed pretty rushed to get out of here, but you're not focused on her right now. Right now, you need to give the profile to the men and women of the Philly PD in order to catch this guy.
"With four known victims, we should start by re-interviewing friends and family. We're looking for a white male in his thirties to forties. With his knowledge of circuitry and wiring, we think that he's either an electrician or an electrical engineer. It's a job that may give him access to a victim's home or workplace where he has the opportunity to observe his targets."
"The women are attractive, professional women. He sees them as strong, righteous, and unobtainable. He seeks to tear them down, to reduce them to basic sexual creatures and punish them."
"He's a true sexual sadist. A typology we refer to as anger-excitation, meaning he becomes sexually aroused by the suffering of his victims. Killing these women is an afterthought. Their pain is what he's after, and he takes his time to exact maximum stimulation."
"What about his trophies? He keeps their clothes, right?" an officer asks.
"Yes. We believe he's using them for rehearsal fantasies," you answer. "By dressing as his victims, he can relive the torture. It's during this time that he most likely pleasures himself in order to reinforce his association between suffering and gratification. When he becomes dissatisfied with this, he seeks out a new victim."
"Keep in mind, he's been doing this for a long time, and he's been thinking about doing it most of his life. He'll continue to evolve in finding new ways of challenging himself, increasing his stimulation threshold. There are no boundaries for this man."
JJ walks in, interrupting the profile. She doesn't look too happy, and when you figure out why, you're pissed... Just not as pissed as Hotch. The reason why Jill wasn't part of this profile briefing is because she gathered the press to talk to them without talking to your team about it. You can see it on Hotch's face and feel it coming off him in waves.
He is fucking pissed.
He has to stop the briefing early to watch the news since Jill is out there right now. Your team shuffles into an empty conference room to watch.
"He's an individual that we believe to be currently active within our community. If it were not for certain evidence brought to our attention in recent days, he may well have continued to operate without our knowledge. We're still investigating more specifics, past murders, and who might have been his victims."
"Do you know about this?" Hotch asks Rossi.
"No."
"But now that he is on our radar, you can rest assured that we will find him and bring him to justice," Jill finishes.
She cuts the press conference short and heads back to the police station, not expecting to be met with Hotch's wrath. He doesn't want to do this in front of everyone, so he takes her off to the side to counsel her. You walk closer to the room to hear what they have to say because sometimes, you're a nosy bitch.
"Agent, I don't know how you usually do things, but you need to let my team know if you're planning on holding a press conference."
"No, it wasn't a conference. It was just an announcement. We're sending half the cops in the city out to canvas. The story would have leaked. I was just putting a reassuring face on the situation."
"Your face."
"I'm the case agent."
"You're also outranked by every member of my team."
"Meaning what, you'll vote me off the island?" she scoffs, but Hotch isn't playing.
"Nothing tears a case apart faster than an agent trying to make his or her name on it."
"I'm trying to protect my city from what could be the most prolific serial killer since Charles Cullen."
"What about Michael Strenko, Florian Gall, and Christopher Hardgrove?"
"I don't know those names," she sighs.
"Those are Cullen's victims. Nobody remembers the victims. Everybody remembers the killer, and that's exactly what happens when an agent puts the story ahead of the case. The bureau doesn't need any more agents like that. Do you understand?"
"Yes, sir," she nods.
You look over at the door to see Spencer waving at you. Him, Emily, and Derek are wanting to get something to eat, and you quickly jog over to them to join. The restaurant isn't far from the police station just in case you're called back urgently. You and Spencer are on one side of the booth while Derek and Emily are on the other side.
As soon as you're seated with your food, the gossip begins.
"I have no doubt she's highly capable. I'm just saying that I find her excitement level at the prospect of finding more bodies somewhat unsettling," Spencer backs you up.
"She is rushing into this, and she is going to get someone else killed or herself."
"Yes, thank you," Derek agrees with you and Spencer. "JJ said she was making up names for the killer."
"Yet, if she was a man, you'd say she had balls," Emily comments.
"Oh, don't even go there. This is not a gender thing."
"Right. Let's get back to Reid's map."
Of course Spencer brought the map to talk about work even though this is supposed to be a break from work.
"Alright, the nearness principle tells us that a killer won't travel far to abduct his victims, but this one's gone to great lengths to spread out his abduction and disposal sites. The only location I can attach a real meaning to is the storage unit."
"There are four victims and we got squat," Derek sighs.
"For years he's gone unchecked. I think it's only a matter of time before he grows comfortable and starts killing closer to home."
"Unfortunately, that only helps us if there's a fresh kill."
"So, there's a woman out there right now who has to die so we can do our job. Unbelievable," Derek sighs.
You take a forkful of your food and hold it out for Spencer to try.
"Take a bite."
Spencer leans in and takes the bite, smirking at you while maintaining eye contact.
"What about me?" Derek teases.
"Fine. Take a bite." You scoop another forceful and hold it out for him. He does the same as Spencer, but he doesn't smirk at you. "You're a child sometimes. Do you want a bite, Emily?"
"No, thank you," she chuckles.
You lean against Spencer's side and continue eating as the conversation switches to something a lot lighter than murder.

You know what y’all who feel bad for reading fanfiction should do? Write down how many fics your read in a day and how many words each fic has.
I was feeling bad for not reading as many books as I would like, but today I realized that I read more than 30k words per day in fanfics. ITS HUGE, GUYS!
It’s not bad or invalid just because it’s fanfic. You are reading and entertaining yourself while you learn new things. It’s amazing!

off the rack #1254
Monday, March 18, 2019
My brain woke up at 2 AM and I fretted until the alarm clock went off at 4:30 AM. One thought that popped up was that it's Monday and I better remember to post my comic book reviews. Time just flew during this bout of insomnia. I can usually fall back asleep knowing there are 2 and a half hours before the alarm goes off but this time it started to beep after what seemed like only 10 minutes. My perception of time fascinates me sometimes.
Catwoman #9 - Ram V (writer) John Timms (art) Josh Reed (letters). The Two-Step Cha Cha Cha. Isn't that three steps? This one shot heist story reminded me of the TV show Leverage. Selina hires a crew to steal from a bad guy and helps the police put the bad guy away. Everything is explained in the end for those of us that wonder "how'd they do that?". I really liked the art in this issue.
X-23 #10 - Mariko Tamaki (writer) Diego Olortegui (pencils) Walden Wong (inks) Chris O'Halloran (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). X-Assassin part 4. This mad scientist story ends as one would expect. I felt like everything was tied up too smoothly so I hope the next story has a good hook or this book will be benched.
Runaways #19 - Rainbow Rowell (writer) Andre Genolet (art) Triona Farrell (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). Molly runs away with Alex to start a new story. I'm always apprehensive whenever I see a new artist come onto a book that I like but Andre does an excellent job and I hope he stays on for a while.
Cover #6 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) David Mack (art) Zu Orzu (colours) Carlos M. Mangual (letters). Aw Max, we hardly knew ye. The comic book artist turned spy completes his mission. It was an interesting concept and the art in this last issue has some cool James Bond type pages. Johnny Rivers had a hit single in 1966 called Secret Agent Man. I was 10-years-old and thought it was Secret Asian Man. I still hear the chorus that way.
Little Bird #1 - Darcy Van Poelgeest (writer) Ian Bertram (art) Matt Hollingsworth (colours) Aditya Bidikar (letters). This 5-issue story takes place in a future where religious zealots from the United Nations of America invades Canada. Little Bird is part of a resistance trying to keep the true north strong and free. It's only been about 3 years since "We Stand on Guard" was on the racks so this story will seem familiar. The bad guy Americans have a different motive in attacking Canada this time so this story merits a look see. The art is nice and will appeal to fans of Moebius and Frank Quitely. You'll be doing your patriotic duty if pick this up.
The Magnificent Ms. Marvel #1 - Saladin Ahmed (writer) Minkyu Jung (pencils) Juan Vlasco (inks) Ian Herring (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). It's been a while since I've read a Ms. Marvel comic book and this relaunch is pretty good at introducing new readers to this young super hero with a quick recap of her origin story and showing some of her friends and family. There are not enough changes to bring me back to the fold however but fans of Kamala Khan should be happy to keep reading.
Calamity Kate #1 - Magdalene Visaggio (writer) Corin Howell (art) Valentina Pinto (colours) Zakk Saam (letters). Meet Kate Strand, monster hunter. She blows into Los Angeles to crash on her old friend's couch and immediately starts killing monsters. This new comic book doesn't make a lick of sense. Take Kate's monster hunter competition Javelin for instance. Why call yourself Javelin if you're not killing monsters with a spear? This is a poor imitation of Marvel's Elsa Bloodstone.
Age of Conan: Bêlit #1 - Tini Howard (writer) Kate Niemczyk (art) Jason Keith (colours) VC's Travis Lanham (letters). If you've ever wondered how the love of Conan's life got started you'll find out in this new comic book. Bêlit is the young daughter of a pirate king who finds herself on the open seas where she will eventually rule the waves on her ship the Tigress. I'm a big Conan fan but I almost didn't grab this off the racks because the art is too cartoony for me. It looks like it's aimed at a younger reader but there's a parental advisory on the cover. Other than some mild bloody violence I don't see that it deserves the harsh rating. I think fans of feisty female swashbucklers will like this.
Assassin Nation #1 - Kyle Starks (writer) Erica Henderson (art) Deron Bennett (letters). I thought this looked like Squirrel Girl. Erica Henderson co-created this comic book about a assassin who brings together the world's top 20 assassins so he can hire them as body guards because he's being targeted by a hit man. If you like Deadpool but without the crazy silliness you are the target audience.
The Amazing Spider-Man #17 - Nick Spencer (writer) Humberto Ramos (pencils) Victor Olazaba (inks) Edgar Delgado (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). Hunted part 1. This is a classic super villain team-up story. I guess Kraven's last hunt wasn't, because he's back and has teamed up with Arcade to force Spider-Man to end his resurrected life. The two have trapped Spider-Man and a bunch of his animal themed arch enemies in Central Park and everybody is being hunted by cyborg Kravens. This mega Spider-Man event runs until May with added issues so that you'll be getting a part of the story almost every week. You're going to need to increase your credit limit.
Avengers LGY #712: No Road Home #5 - Jim Zub, Mark Waid & Al Ewing (writers) Sean Izaakse (art) Marcio Menyz & Erick Arciniega (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). This is the issue where the good guys pull their fat out of the fire and a possible win can be gleaned. The surprise appearance on the last page made me laugh. I did not expect to see this mash-up.
Marvel Action Spider-Man #2 - Delilah S. Dawson (writer) Fico Ossio (art) Ronda Pattison (colours) Shawn Lee (letters). I finally saw Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse and thought that it was a cool cartoon. Anybody who liked the team up of Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Miles Morales/ Spider-Man and Gwen Stacy/ Spider-Gwen in the movie will get a kick out of this all ages comic book. The three Spider-Heroes are all about the same age here and I think it works better and is more relatable for young readers. I actually like this book more than Amazing.

The Ocean plus Shawn equals Chaos
Tumblr media
Pairing: Carlton Lassiter x Female!reader
Characters: Carlton Lassiter, Female!reader, Shawn Spencer, Burton "Gus" Guster, Henry Spencer, Juliet O'Hara, Buzz McNab
Warnings: Fluff, classic Shawn screams, psych vibes, Lassie is a simp for his baby girl, Henry is a wise man, we listen to him at all times, reader lowkey lightly trying to kill Shawn, McNab makes an appearance
Word Count: 655
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You don’t know how it started but, you pull the blanket tighter around you to get warm.
You huff as you feel like you’re getting colder and colder by the minute.
You look up and notice the movement beside Carlton’s shoulder. You narrow your eyes and notice the one person you're thankful to see but also want to punch.
He gets closer with each step he takes. He feels bad about what happened and wants to apologize, he’s close to doing so until he sees the expression on your face.
You push yourself off the step on the back of the ambulance to chase after your idiot friend.
Shawn immediately starts running backwards and starts screaming like a little girl, which would have amused you more had the case not happened.
He runs around a car and tries his best to evade you but continues to fail with each turn he takes.
If he knew you couldn’t seriously fight him, he would have been able to use more common sense instead of running on “fumes”.
He runs past the crowd aka your other best friend, Shawn's dad, his crush, and Carlton, he continues to make poor excuses to hide from you even if they’ve already said no.
“Shouldn’t we help him?” Juliette asks, cringing every time he screams.
“No. He’s got what’s coming to him,” Henry says.
“Isn’t that a little harsh?” Gus chimes in.
“Do you want her to be the one chasing you?”
He sucks in air through his teeth, thinking it over and decides he’d rather live than be in the same predicament as his best friend. “He’ll be fine.”
“Well, I’m not fine. She should be on her way to the hospital by now,” Carlton says before standing in front of Shawn, who then screams in horror.
“Is this how I go? How am I supposed to live on when I never got to pass on my legacy to the children?!” Gus furrows his brows, “you don’t have any.” Shawn gasps, clutching his chest.
“And I don’t have any children!” You stop in front of him, but Carlton shoves him out of the way and grabs, pushing you back towards an ambulance. “Back to the ambulance.”
“Carlton, I’m fine.”
“Well, I’m not. Now you better get your butt back in the ambulance or you’re gonna have me to deal with.”
You avoid his gaze and listen to his advice, slowly trailing back to the ambulance where Buzz is, worriedly searching for you. “Oh, thank God. I mean- I knew where you were.”
You narrow your eyes at him, “you’re lying.”
He opens his mouth, looking like a fish out of water, scared to admit that he did temporarily lose you because Carlton will have his head.
“Lassie, I want to go home.”
“You can go home after you’ve been checked out,” he says with a soothing voice.
“Stop treating me like I’m five.”
“Okay, once you're done with the doctor, then you can go home.”
“That’s slightly better but thank you nonetheless.”
The corner of his lip’s curves upward, “it’s my job to make sure you're safe.”
You curl back into the blanket, reaching for his hand. “Thank you,” you tell him, understanding the hidden meaning behind his comment.
“Hey, Lassie! Are you two dating?” You stare at Carlton and smile, “I’m going to kill him. Please visit me in prison.”
He opens his mouth to ask what you mean but you’re gone before he could even make a sound.
Shawn squeals and takes off, passing Henry, who shakes his head. “Stop running!”
“No, you want to hurt me!”
“Maybe I wouldn’t if you’re crazy girlfriend didn’t try to drown me!”
“We were never together! I only like those who are reasonably crazy!”
“Well, then reasonably take my foot up your-”
“Okay, Gus, go stop them,” Henry tells him. “What? Why me?”
“You’re their best friend.”
“Not right now I’m not.”
