Garrus wasn’t jealous.
He liked Lex. He respected her–admired her, even.
And true, he also thought Lex was beautiful. He didn’t have a human fetish, but there was something about her that went so much deeper than appearances. The way she commanded attention. The way everyone turned to look at her. That kind of presence–that power–was intoxicating in its own way. He was cocky, but he knew what to be cocky about. He knew his strengths and played to them. Lex played to everything and anything with a devastating amount of self-assuredness. Or suicidality. It was hard to tell sometimes.
He glanced back out the windows that looked down into the shuttle bay. They’d created a makeshift firing range there to test their weapons and help the team blow off steam in between missions and long stints at the Citadel. It was Kelly's idea, since half of the ground team needed anger management lessons and this was as close as they would get.
There was no real danger to it. Nothing short of actual AA guns could pierce the Normandy's hull and they used soft-polymer rounds for safety in close quarters, so the most anyone was risking was a painful bruise. Of course, Lex loved it. She cared for her rifles like they were her children and she never wasted an opportunity to tinker with them.
But she was practicing with Thane.
Garrus sighed and pushed away from the window. It bothered him and it bothered him that it bothered him. Lex also practiced with him and with Grunt and Zaeed and she and Jack challenged each other to trick shots when they weren’t being supervised.
Hell, he liked the assassin. Respected him, even. It seemed like there was a sore lack of good people in the universe and few tried half as hard as Thane did to be one.
So why this? This irrational annoyance. This irritation. He couldn’t help but think back to Oraka in Chora’s Den moping over Sha’ira and it didn’t do great things for his ego.
Garrus was so distracted he didn’t even hear the elevator ping.
“Hey, I was wondering where you’d gotten to,” Jon said as he stepped off. “I looked in the main battery and thought something must have gone horribly wrong to drag you away from your terminal. What’s up?”
Garrus straightened, looking away quickly from the shuttle bay. “Nothing,” he said. “I just came down here to talk to the engineers about the power draw from the new guns.”
Jon leaned against the opposite bulkhead and then glanced out the window, at his sister who was listening to Thane explain something to her with rapt attention. “Uh huh.”
It was more of a grunt than words, loaded with as much skepticism as the older of the Shepard twins could muster.
Before Garrus could make good his escape, Jon spoke again: “You two are a lot alike, you know.”
Garrus gave him a dubious look. “How?”
“Well for one, you’re both dumbasses,” Jon said, surprising a laugh out of the turian, who then reached up to rub the sore side of his face. The man smiled, only half apologetic. “My sister tells me everything and I can count on one hand how many times she’s said she loves me. So, if you’re waiting for her to make the first move, you’ll be waiting for a while.”
Spirits, they were so unmistakably related. Jon might have been the diplomat of the pair but that was only by default, because Lex’s idea of diplomacy involved a dictionary of curse words and probably at least one explosion.
Garrus glanced back down at the shuttle bay, at Lex. “I’m sure she wants something closer to home…”
“And closer to home is someone else with scales? And hallucinogenic saliva?” Jon snorted. “Garrus. Think of it like this. You’re up here pining for a woman who would have thrown her whole life–her whole career–away to go with you to Omega. I can tell you right now, Lex wouldn’t do that for anyone else. Maybe not even me. So the only thing in your way is you.”
He had a point. He usually did, but this was a particularly annoying example.
"You're her brother, aren't you supposed to be threatening me? Not trying to set us up?" Garrus asked, with humor.
Jon laughed. "When we were sixteen one of the Reds decided to cop a feel and Lex almost beat him to death with a datapad. I don't need to come to her rescue. Yours, maybe. But not hers."

mark and leigh perhaps? 👀
Hey it's the ones I can actually post snippets for!
Marc and Leigh are my Shepard Twins. I had a lot of fun trying to split one character into two and I enjoy the opportunity to make all the Renegade/Paragon decisions external, by making them disagreements between people that started at the same base line , but due to their experiences and traumas went different ways and developed different worldviews. Leigh is maybe my favourite Shepard I have ever created and I am so looking forward to getting to her ME2 and ME3 chapters.
For now I only have a snippet for the upcoming (not yet finished) chapter of Duality:
Her stare slides off of him and over to Dr. Chakwas at her desk and Garrus who is, for some reason, standing at the door. “Leave us.”
“Commander”, Chakwas says in her ever calming ever wise tone. “You are still in need of medical attention…”
“Either you leave and let me talk with the Lieutenant for a few minutes or I walk out. You can decide which is more detrimental to my health.”
Chakwas looks like she is not entirely sure leaving her with Marc will be worse than just letting Leigh walk out, but she walks out right after Garrus, who gives Leigh a curt nod as he leaves. He hasn’t even taken off his armour yet. As soon as the door hisses shut, Leigh’s gaze fixes back on her brother. “What the hell, Lieutenant.”

WIP Whenever
As usual, my muses didn't cooperate until after Wednesday! Here's a snippet of an idea I woke up with this morning - very vivid in my head, less so on the page - for Lennox and Rowan Shepard, Tenth Street Twin Terrors of Edinburgh, and their introduction to Anderson and Hackett...
The shadows were his friends and on a day like today, allies.  Gloomy, grey skies sagged low, hugging the taller buildings and obscuring them from view.  And sound…days like this muffled and masked all sound, distorting distance and making interception incredibly difficult.  Thick mist filled the air leaving it almost like walking into a shower fully dressed.  That brought its own issue; too much moisture left puddles to announce their approach.
Huddled in the alleyway, Lennox focused on approaching footsteps.  Despite the distortion, he identified two pairs and the echo through the fog and off the old buildings in the district suggested heavy steps.  Without glancing at his twin, Nox lifted shaped to fingers into a V then closed the first three over his thumb in the shape of an M.
Two men.
Rowan, nodded her agreement.  Patiently, they waited, despite urgency thrumming through their veins.  Things had been tough of late.  Even Rowan’s art wasn’t helping out as much as it had in past.  Three days since a meal that wasn’t scavenged out of disposal bins.  Mickey had tried, but the new landlord was cracking down harder than ever and she couldn’t risk her business to help them.
Nox felt the rumble in his belly – relatively silent for now, but that wouldn’t last long – and noticed Rowan rubbing her own.
They needed to find a worthy target and fast.
Though muffled, the steps drew closer.  When the pair finally came into view, they were far closer to the alley entrance than Nox expected.  But he and Ro had been at this for years and could stand stiller than a statue when necessary.
Older – by a couple decades at least, Nox guessed – one was dressed in a uniform of some kind, the other in fatigues and a hoodie.  Both moved casually, Hoodie had the added grace of a panther.  Something was up there; what, was the question.
Uniform was the fairer of the two.  Dark hair, striking light blue eyes and a face that had been at the wrong end of some kind of blade or a very lucky shot.  Not overly built but looked as if he could hold his own in a fight.
Hoodie was darker – head to toe, eyes, hair and skin.  It reminded Nox of melted chocolate that Mickey liked to drizzle on the cups of cocoa she used to share with him and Ro.  That was where the resemblance ended.  His clothing left it difficult to judge his strength, but the boots and fatigues suggested something more than Uniform.  Lennox didn’t know what the stripes on his right arm meant, but Ro’s soft, disapproving grunt assured him her artistic sensibilities were offended by the asymmetrical design of the thing.  Why not both arms?

Gemini Paradox - a Mass Effect WIP :)
Don’t mind me, just shamelessly plugging my Mass Effect fanfic that’s my take on the James Vega romance we all deserved but never got 😭👹 if the summary below tickles your fancy, then please hop on over to Ao3 to read on here!
Athena Shepard died the day they buried an empty casket in her brother's name. Fleeing to old habits and the depths of Omega to escape her grief, Thena lived the next two years in a numb haze, joining the asari dancers at Afterlife, under the watchful eye of Aria T'Loak.
Then, a grinning Alliance marine saunters into the club, calls her "Lola", and spends every day sitting at the front of whatever stage she's dancing on to flirt shamelessly with zero follow-through. His appearance comes three weeks before the ghost of her twin brother walks into Afterlife, shattering the glass cocoon containing what's left of her heart when she realizes that ghost isn't a ghost, but her brother—alive and well.
---
A re-imagining of the Mass Effect trilogy centered around Ares and Athena Shepard, the famous (and infamous) twins raised by Anderson and Hackett after the death of their parents, in which, Nihlus lives, Vega gets fast-tracked into ME2 by way of a fake relationship, and the fate of the universe rests in the hands of a brother and sister who will always choose each other above anyone else.

"Stay angry."
You can bet those iPhones will be greatly calibrated.
(Currently playing ME3 for the first time, I brought him along on Thessia and here I am, processing that mission via overly-elaborated shitposting. It was a gift by my Shepard, Max, who told him it's the perfect slogan if he wants to run for Primarch.)

“So, when are you going to put Garrus out of his misery?”
Lex glanced over at her brother, who was leaning over the galaxy map as she deleted a slew of new messages from the Illusive Man and only just barely resisted sending him some Batarian porn in response. “His injury wasn’t that bad, Jon,” she said over her shoulder. “At least let him finish calibrating the Thanix cannon before we consider euthanizing him.”
Her brother snorted, his lips twisting into a half-smile, and he shot her a look. “That’s not what I meant. You’ve always had a thing for him. It’s why you gave him such a hard time on the SR1.”
Lex gave him a sideways look, her fingers hesitating over the console. “I’m…” She glanced around to make sure no one was standing nearby. Since they were in dry dock, most of the crew had abandoned the Normandy to get a hot meal or a few drinks at the bar. “I don’t think he’s interested.”
“I don’t think he knows that he should be. At least, not out loud. If you were on the playground, you’d be the one shoving sand down his shirt. You gotta give a guy a little more of a hint than that.”
“We give the love we get,” she muttered back, still not looking at her brother.
“Lex.”
“Jon.” She mimicked his tone and finally glanced at him again. “I’m pretty sure if he wanted me, he wouldn’t have spent the last two years telling me not to look for him. Besides, I’m not his type.”
“Or he was just trying to protect you. And I’m pretty sure that if Garrus has a type, it’s a woman who’s named every rifle she’s ever owned after pin up girls.”
She snorted. “I think that makes me more Zaeed’s type.”
“Well, there’s a thought I never needed to consider,” Jon scoffed back.
“What can I say? I’m a sucker for men with sexy voices.”
Her brother shook his head. “C’mon, Lex. I’ve never seen you act so shy.”
“You know, it’s really a pity that Cerberus also rebuilt your annoying big brother habits,” she muttered. Then after a considerable, weighty pause, she added in a near-whisper: “I just… really don’t want to hurt him. He’s been through enough.”
Jon’s eyes softened a little. “Why do you think you would?”
“Because I don’t know how to do anything else.”

"Demand justice for Nex Benedict and students like them."
Thomas Edison High School student, Jake Crowl, speaking at the Twin Cities vigil for Nex Benedict, organized by Thomas Edison High Gender and Sexuality Alliance. (transcript below)
[Um, so I am actually our next speaker. Hello. My name is Jake Crowl. I'm an 18 year old transgender student at Thomas Edison High School in North East Minneapolis. Nex Benedict was a 16 year old non-binary and two spirit child of the Choctaw Nation. Nex was a straight-A student at Owasso High School in Oklahoma. They had a beautiful cat named Zeus. They loved cooking and being in nature. They loved comics like The Walking Dead and playing Minecraft. Nex was out for just 28 days as non-binary to their peers before their passing.
I'm so, so sorry that your peers failed you. I'm sorry that your school failed you. I'm sorry that everyone who was supposed to be protecting you failed to do so. Rest in peace, Nex Benedict. You were a beautiful soul and a wonderful human. I hope you understand how much you were loved and how much you are cherished.
This October will mark 25 years since the torture and death of Matthew Shepard. After 25 years, why are our transgender and two spirit children still not safe in schools? Why are our babies dying and no one is doing anything? I come before you to beg your representatives, to beg your schools to protect, to demand solid protections for our transgender and two spirit students. Demand justice for Nex Benedict and students like them.]
