Off the top of my head, I don't think so, Dabi is willing to try anything once and Shig is usually pretty chill if it doesn't seem like something Dabi’s into. Story about:

Shuichi kept the conversation going until the doctor was finally able to give him a shot, and the patient will have him falling asleep while the doctor begins to treat his wound. Shuichi went to work the next day and wanted to see the patient from the night before. He wasn't worried, but he wanted to check on him because he seemed to dislike the hospital and was effectively in pain. He approached the nurse but was surprised. The nurse says he was released early in the morning and gave him a note to go to the pharmacy to get his medication. Shuichi thought it was insane to let patients go after such an injury, but he reasoned that the patient was probably scared to stay in the hospital and didn't want to pay bills. Shuichi simply lets it go and goes about his usual activities. After a few weeks, he was about to clock out in the waiting rooms. Shuichi saw the same patient from a few weeks ago and asked if he was here for a check-up because he showed up pale. Shuichi decided to assist him and informed him that he called a doctor. However, he requested his assistance because he felt more at ease with him than with the doctor and nurse the previous time. Shuichi decided to do it if it was only his arm, and while he was stitching up his wound, he asked him if he was ok. The patients say he was fine, but his arm needed to heal for a few more weeks. Patients thank him for calming him down in the emergency room, which Shuichi was correct about because he dislikes hospitals. He also asked about his name, which Shuichi has shared. Shuichi asks his name as well, so he won't forget him if he returns. Shuichi now knew the patient's name was Shigarak, which he thought was a lovely name. Shuichi was nearly finished wrapping his wound when Shigaraki asked if he wasn't lying about playing video games. Shuichi confirmed that he also enjoys video games. Shuichi had no idea what had happened that crazy night, but seeing him again made him happy for a change. He made friends and his life was about to change for the better, but he was also trying to hide his true self because he didn't want his friends to find out he was a lizard mutant.

all might’s writing is sm better when hori is not in fanboy mode… the only kind of writing this is good for is bakugou

ACTUALLY kind of insane that this feels right ngl. ordinarily i'd be like ALL fanboy mode writing is bad you gotta write your characters like you hate them so bad.

but like, when you compare how all might and deku's Big Hype Moments play out and how bakugou or shigarak's Big Hype Moments play out, i'm much more likely to find the latter satisfying than the former, particularly in the last act.

there's still issues - shigaraki was possessed for however long and has had a lot of cheesy 'heheheheh i'm so evil' type of dialogue when mocking deku, and bakugou still spends too much time comparing himself to deku and also his big win coming out his temporary death was to explode an evil baby.

but at least their hype moments are paying off like, actual character development. bakugou was a bully who kept getting his ass beat by the story until he could address his superiority complex , shigaraki's grown as a leader throughout his adventures and is better able to conceptualize his anger and pain, has stepped out of all for one's shadow. he has graduated from calling people slurs on league of legends to having a boyfriend he can blow up mt fuji for :) both characters had to start at the bottom, were introduced with solid character flaws, and worked their way upwards to address. hype earned.

all might and deku's character flaws that they had to work on from the bottom and address their way upwards is that. they are too heroic :( they hero'd too hard and it's so tragic. also their self-esteem is so sad? all might and deku were both subject to deconstruction for superhero tropes earlier in the story, in particular about Doing All The Hero Stuff By Yourself, And The Disastrous Toll, but that deconstruction was honestly half-baked and incomplete before the last act started reconstructing it. there's no real momentum to their hype moments, just a lot of really fantastic art and crazy expressions to make up for the lack of substance.

part of me wonders to what extent horikoshi is actually fanboying over all might and deku and wants his audience to fangender with him, or if he's just providing rote fanservice. like he's obligated to provide this material for deku, but he didn't have to do All That with all might. his character arc was fine without getting a mechsuit. oh well.

Taking the only logical course of action; I’m here to talk the importance of the society angle even more, by showing how it connects to their traumas. And the farther reaching consequences while I’m at it. Because I genuinely am hoping that discussing the issues I see in popular theories can help me/us refine our general ideas of what will/should happen with Shigarak & the League on their path to redemption.

Because the thing is, the post and those like it are right that the League’s traumas and the handling of them are important factors to the villains redemption. I agree with those parts. But their issues with hero society are also important, genuinely maybe more, because they decide whether or not we loop back here or not after the League are inevitably saved (something I think most will agree is a lot less in-question at this stage).

Got a bit long though, so I’m putting a read more; under which you’ll find a discussion on the connection between their traumas & societal grievances, an analysis on the farther reaching consequences on these grievances, and a personal note on why I care so much about them besides. Should that interest anyone.

Now, the connection between the society route and the trauma route is simple; the various social issues are what caused the traumas that made the villains. Competitive hero scene leads to Endeavor’s eugenics experiment leads to Dabi, quirk prejudice leads to Himiko & Shuichi being shunned for their quirks leads the villains Toga & Spinner, heroes caring about fighting more than their families leads to Kotaro’s abusive behavior (which was basically Hero society in miniature) leads to the Shimura incident + a follow up of civs leaving everything to heroes leads to Shigaraki Tomura.

Additionally, in their fight to destroy the source of those traumas, the villains are effectively fighting to prevent others from experiencing their starts to darkness...regardless of how most probably...aren’t thinking that far ahead.

(I don’t think Tomura’s thought much of this; but I think at least Dabi, for one, has. If just to the point of “I want to stop what happened to me from happening again” and not quite “so no one else is ever again in my place”. Well they are trauma survivors; I’m not gonna get on their case too much for focusing on their own survival & lashing out against their trauma sources over their fellow victims.)

But regardless of conscious intention, and whether you think AFO’s hand in things invalidates their motivations (which is a post for another day); that prevention of others experiencing their traumas is the result they, for all their toxic worldviews and unhealthy coping mechanisms, are fighting for.

Okay but it’s still not gonna cure they’re traumas so why am I acting like the society angle is more important? Well the thing is that, yes, the trauma angle is important because Tomura, Dabi, Himiko, Spinner are important; but that is still just them regardless. Just those four. In few years to a decade, if nothing is done about the cracks in hero society that made the League, then another Tenko, Touya, and Himiko will all “happen”. They’ll get together, and they’ll kill a lot more people. Maybe they’ll be saved to, or maybe they’ll get jailed for life or even killed. Doesn’t really matter, because the next set will kill more people afterwords either way, in the doomed hope of affecting unachievable change. (Because if our League can’t do anything now, the future knock-off League’s definitely can’t.) And this will continue until Ujiko’s quirk apocalypse finally does humanity in; because heroes don’t care about that either.

And that’s the thing; the heroes don’t care about this “flaws in our society” stuff, and under no circumstances am I going to give them the benefit of the doubt to suddenly care to deal with this stuff off-panel and then do so. This is true even for the ones we like.

Example: we all like Shoto, right? He’s a nice kid, kind, wants to be a hero to put people at ease, yeah? Yeah. ...He doesn’t care about preventing other heroes from doing what Endeavor did to their own families. I know that’s hard to accept but it really is something he’s never once given thought to. Dabi, for all his aforementioned toxic world-views and coping mechanisms, is the only character who does. And if Shoto doesn’t start showing to agree with his brother on-screen and work to fix it himself; I am frankly unwilling to assume that will change unprompted. Not for him or any other hero; not when not doing so is easier for them, and heroes taking the easy way out has become a pattern recently.

A pattern both in-text and in recent predictions, I’m finding. I mean, this whole post is about a theoretical easy out the heroes have to avoid having to fix Hero Society and my problems with it. And I think that’s my core issue here; given the themes of hard work in this series, I’m against the idea of easy outs. Weather that be AFO’s incompetence giving the heroes an easy win in the finale, or using him alongside Tenko’s trauma to invalidate & ignore Tomura’s grievances with society so they don’t need to be addressed.

Especially because: the LOV are getting redeemed, no questions. I often get the impression my fellow villain stans worry about that when presented with the idea of hiccups in the redemption arcs; like Tomura killing someone again this arc, or getting too mad about Twice’s death, or holding on to his grievances post-AFO defeat, etc. Like, they’re worried if the redemption doesn’t go smoothly enough, there’s a chance it won’t happen. But the kids have set out to save them, they’re quite dedicated to it; so it’s happening, hiccups or no.

But they’ve never shown to care for this societal stuff; so that’s a bit more up in the air, and thus a bit more concerning for me.

Especially if you take into account the fact that whenever (the quirk) All For One was used to give/take a quirk, the user always touched the forehead (or overall the upper side of the face)

Chapter Thoughts: 366 – Full Moon

O  I wish I could be more engaged in the business of Shigaraki’s “ideal form.”  It’s very hard to get there, though, when my mind is stuck wrestling with questions about the mechanics of the possession and the psychological balance between the relevant parties.  Like, if this is a form born from Shigaraki’s psyche—and all the hands and family faces say it is—then why isn't more of Shigaraki apparent in the body's active consciousness? Conversely, if the AFO vestige's will is so overpowering, why doesn’t anything of AFO’s psyche seem to have ever been reflected in the shifting, unsettled form he's currently controlling?

Also, did AFO and Ujiko have any idea this is what the process would look like?  I would assume so, since VFO talked some chapters ago about the “ideal form” thing, but while I can buy Ujiko finding this all very fascinating, AFO, who has previously expressed distaste for desperate struggles,(1) seems like he’d find it pretty unsightly, especially as something he might be stuck with himself because of Shigarak’s subconscious!

O  While I’m on the topic of the mechanics of this body, this whole business of heroes “besting” Shigaraki’s initial form is really poorly expressed.  And that’s kinda bizarre!  Because, like, okay: during the war?  I could believe Shigaraki’s body was having trouble keeping up with the damage there!  He developed those awful cracks and fissures, he showed burns, he got thrown around, all of that.  It was painful to watch because I was convinced of the pain he was in.

But this?  We watched him shrug off a laser canon. Bakugou’s biggest attack left little more than a skid mark on his face.  The electrification stopped being relevant approximately two chapters after it was introduced..  Mirko got some good kicks in, though I struggle to understand why they were markedly more effective than Suneater’s attack. A lot of the monster hands have been damaged, sure, but since those were equated with fingernails and hair, I don't see why continuing to blast them apart would have more than a negligible effect.(2)

No part of this is as effectively, convincingly portrayed as the similar fights during the war; indeed, I've spent most of this time thinking the heroes' attacks aren't having much effect explicitly because of things like Mirio and ShigAFO himself saying that Shigaraki's body is just too tough. So to have this magic fiat wand waved over the fight just feels like Horikoshi's trying to—and forgive me the use of this rather loaded term—gaslight me about what's been going on this whole time.

The alleged stress and panic are also murkily expressed.  We’ve watched VFO have a fear response to Bakugou, tied in some nebulous way to the second OFA bearer, but because that relationship is still entirely unexplored, we don’t know why it would be causing him to panic.  And anyway, the focus of the narration here isn’t even on VFO; it’s on Shigaraki. He certainly has all the reason in the world to feel stressed and panicked, but then I’m right back to the beginning: how can Shigaraki be feeling or influencing much of anything right now when he’s been so thoroughly subsumed by VFO?

And that’s all a shame!  Because I truly did have some Feelings upon looking at the hand armor.  All that horror, externalized as a defense mechanism, his family’s hands displayed, not as something to disgust and reassure him, their presence entirely a means to steer his emotional state, but rather as something to protect him, to physically shield him against the damage the world is so set on doing to him.  It really is incredibly evocative!  But it’s evocative of Shigaraki, and if that’s going to be the case, I wish this whole fight could have been with Shigaraki, not with an ever-so-slightly Tomura-shaded All For One.

O  Suneater continues to be the character who is Most Shoujo in this Extremely Shounen manga.  God, him saying Mirio’s name as Shigaraki’s shadow looms above him, right before the blow lands.  GOD.  As soon as I parsed that chain of events, I was right back to him startling awake with Mirio’s name on his lips at the exact, simultaneous instant Mirio lost his quirk.  They are the Most Valid ship, actually.

O  Jeanist interposing himself in between ShigAFO and Bakugou is good stuff, though I can’t help but sigh for the plot we might have had, of a defenseless Jeanist refusing to leave Bakugou’s side even as certain death advances because he’s still weaving Bakugou’s heart fibers back together.  Hell, you could even have had Edgeshot’s last stand there, and it still wouldn’t have had much impact, but throw that little flashback to his school days with Jeanist in and the contents of his flashback would have lent more weight to his stand because it would have been in defense of someone he had an actual relationship with,(3) even if that relationship was only revealed at the last second.

Because the Edgeshot stuff continues to be confounding even after the fact, let me add: if Edgeshot’s so capable of mucking around with peoples’ organs, why not go fuck around with Shigaraki’s heart?  Are we meant to believe Shigaraki’s body is too tough to pierce?  Probably Edgeshot shouldn’t have been the one to take down Re-Destro, then!  But even setting aside what seems like it ought to be the relatively similar toughnesses of Re-Destro in full Stress mode and Shigaraki post-surgery, god knows ShigAFO flaps his jaws enough with villain monologues; just go in through his mouth!

See?  I wanted to talk about how I like this fight’s Jeanist+Bakugou beats, and I can’t even do that without having to contend with how That Ninja I Hate got shoehorned in in the most awkward way imaginable.

O  The only reason I am not going to spend a paragraph harping on the “two seconds” bit is because it’s all internal, and thoughts can process extremely quickly.  But it’s cutting it very close, and I am kiiiind of already thinking ahead to the number of seconds the anime is going to require for that scene to get through the voice-acting alone. In fairness, though, Jeanist's more coherent thoughts are confined to only two panels, which are presumably running concurrently with Mirio's higher panel-count but also far more fragmentary monologue. So I can reasonably believe, albeit just barely, that those streams of thoughts could happen in only two seconds.

O  The ass joke is a massive tonal swerve, but honestly, I can’t really hold it against the story.  Recall that Sir Nighteye’s introduction was him manning a tickle torture machine; the man idolized All Might, whose highest form of humor is puns.  Nighteye's sense of humor has never been as dignified as his hero persona, so I 100% believe that he thought Mirio’s butt jokes were hilarious.

Also too, I remember that one of the things Mirio told Deku after Nighteye’s death is that, while Sir might have been harsh with Deku, he actually laughed a lot when it was just him and Mirio, and so I really liked that the little flashback here is consistent with that dynamic.

I do kind of wish Mirio’s face sold the gag better; him looking like he’s on the verge of a hernia kind of detracts from the intended humor, at least to me.  It just makes it look effortful, and a good non-sequitur should not look that labored.

ShigAFO’s little puffed exhalation of laughter is funny, though.  It reminds me of his little “Tap” sound effect talk bubble back in Deika.

O  Deku’s here, biiiiiig whoop.  I have all of two thoughts on this: 

I wasn't yet doing chapter posts back then, but I called it on the thing Deku was reacting to back in 357 being the Americans’ jets.  I assume plenty of other people did too, though; it really was the only even pseudo-reasonable way for him to get to this fight in time with Warp Gate off the table.  I imagine we’ll open next week with a flashback to that.

Well, at least we can get on with things here, maybe finally see what, if anything whatsoever, Deku’s going to try on the whole Saving Shigaraki front.  “Getting on with things” is about all the positivity I can muster, however, which I think we can all agree is a far cry from the fist-pumping and hollering that was probably the intended response.

1:  Nana, All Might, everything he or his vestige have said about people who lack the power to make a difference.

2: If we were still in the part of the story where caloric intake was a factor in being able to produce physical effects, I might be willing to assume Shigaraki's body was just running low on energy reserves, but the fact that he can still whip out hand armor family puppet battering rams disinclined me to that explanation.

3:  I realize there’s emotional weight to be had in sacrifice for an innocent, someone the sacrificer doesn’t even know, solely because it’s the right thing to do, but even that isn’t how the story chose to frame Edgeshot’s sacrifice for Bakugou.  It went with the “adults sacrificing for the next generation” angle, which immediately runs into the problem of Bakugou and Edgeshot not even being in a separate generation, age-wise.

“If everyone ends the story being buddy buddy with them I think that comes off as childish/unrealistic” I definitely agree with you there, it would be a bit strange if they’re all buddies by the end or there isn’t some kind of unease! To be honest the only villain I can see having a buddy buddy or shall we say mending their broken relationships by the end is Touya, given he has his family which I know their relationships are a bit….messed up but still there’s that. With Toga and Shigaraki I don’t really see whom they could be “buddy buddy” with by the end, and this is going off the assumption of the villains not dying by the end.

I think the reason many people think it’ll end with the LoV being besties with with some of the main cast by the end is simply that that’s how many redemption arcs end if the character doesn’t die. This is why people hate the idea of Endeavor having a redemption arc--because they think it’s going to end with everyone forgiving him in the end, either posthumously or not. And given that the story seems to be leaning toward a redemptive type ending for at least the main three LoV characters, that inevitably makes people assume they’ll be pals with everyone in the end (or at least with the characters who matter). 

Personally I think it’s to early to rule out redemptive death completely. I highly doubt Hori would kill Toga given he enjoys his Yuri bait to much, plus she hasn’t been shown to be physically/mentally at her limit to the point where her death would feel more expected. But Touya and Shigaraki could easily do the “sacrificed myself because I’m dying anyway” trope. 

People who are against this, say it would mean the Heroes, particularly Izuku and Shoto failed to save their villains--but that’s a very limited view on what saving can mean. As long as Izuku frees Shigaraki from AfO’s control, and Shoto manages to sooth Touya’s anger/hurt to the point where he can care again, then they are in a sense saved. I mean, in the end of Star Wars, Luke saves his father, but he still dies--that doesn't mean he failed.  

Touya and particularly Shigaraki dying is an easy way to end things and have it make sense. Again, redemptions usually end with people forgiving the character in question. The issue is that Hori didn't set up that dynamic in his story earlier, while also having the LoV double down constantly. There’s also the problem of Enji, and Bakugou’s arcs which are still ongoing and have racked up hundreds of chapters. 

Having the LoV change their minds in the last 50 chapters is hard enough to believe, but having the world (because their actions were shown to have global consequences) forgive them no problem just because they helped stop AfO, the guy they were helping without much complaint twenty-minutes ago, is even weirder. On top of that many people suspect Izuku will be Shigarak’s new bff along with Bakugou, while Aizawa becomes his father figure because Kurogiri tells him to as a dying request. And Ochacko and Himko are (girl)friends by the end as well. 

This isn’t me saying I’m against redemption arcs or even these over the top optimist/unrealistic ones, but they have to fit the story. Bnha has always shown with characters like Bakugou and Enji (or even Aoyama) that forgiveness takes work and no everyone will be 100% okay with you regardless. These characters that have for the most part done equal or less then the LoV in terms of harm,  fought and bled to be better people and even then don’t get hands held. So, if Hori does end it with everyone being pals I will call that some crap writing.
