Your choice: i was all kinds of fucked up a few weeks ago. you’re all kinds of fucked up all the time. we all are. and that’s why we’re together. i just want to let you know… i am possibly the worst person you’ve ever met.

The scent of smoke wakes her, dragging her from slumber, the onlyplace where she truly feels at peace. Sakura blinks against the heady lull ofsleep that clings to her persistently, seeking out the source. It comes frombeyond her cracked window. She throws open her apartment window fully, gaspingat the sight before her.

The heavy tree line beyond the town is rimmed in brilliant colorsas smoke billows high into the sky, obscuring the stars and moon. The telltalecrackling is all Sakura needs to know of just how pervasive this problem is.

Forest fire.

Sakura curses under her breath, glances once more at the fire, andturns back to her room, rummaging through her closet for the necessary tools.Clothing spelled with fire retardant, thick goggles to block the sting ofsmoke, a few trinkets that hold stores of her powers, her small witchery kit,and comfortable boots to allow for maneuverability. She checks over thesethings, whispering under her breath as she tries to make sure she isn’t missingany crucial items. Sakura redresses quickly, stuffing her feet into the bootsbefore running out the door.

She reaches up to her neck as she runs, clutching at somethingthat isn’t there. Sakura stops, hurries back into the apartment, and picksup her pendant of aquamarine, before again running out the door.

As she turns the key in her car, Sakura spares a brief moment tomourn the fact that she doesn’t have more conventional abilities, ones that willgrant her the power of flight or, at the very least, levitation. No, Sakurathinks as her blood sings in her veins as she tears out of the parking lot, shereceived different abilities, ones that didn’t grant her powers that most grade schoolers mastered easily.

Still, this at least issomething she can do. She knows already that this is beyond the capabilities ofthe county’s fire department. The flames now roar above the tree line,consuming all life in their path. This fire is unnatural.

Thankfully, Sakura thinks as her hands clench around the steeringwheel, she is, at this point, almost a connoisseur of the unnatural.

She drives out past the town’s limits, passing the signinviting her to come back around sometime soon as she makes her way up into theforest. The forests outside of Konoha are wildly untamed and, in fact, arecelebrated for that very thing. Many come from all around the world to travelthrough the mountains and explore the great unknown. The rugged wild draws inthe tourists and really, they can’t complain. Though they do certainly mock theoutsiders who think that their short-winded scampering about the forest areanything to be celebrated or feel accomplished for. No, the tourists who travelthrough are mere children playing pretend in the face of what truly lies withinthe great forest.

Everyone from Konoha has a healthy respect for the forest, mostavoiding going out into it if at all possible. The unofficial town motto is “Discretionis the better part of valor,” for good reason.

Still, Sakura knows that this is something that she can fix.Besides, she doubts that those within the forest will be angry about herassistance.

Hopefully.

She parks her car at the low overlook that hovers only a littleway into the forest. The fires have yet to touch the edges, but Sakura can hearthe crackling of the fire deep within the underbrush. She knows better than totempt fate or the forest entities with her vehicle while the forest is soagitated.

So instead, she stuffs her keys into her pocket and takes off onfoot further into the forest after pulling on the goggles. Her lungs burn thefurther in she goes and her skin begins to heat with the towering blazesomewhere ahead. Sakura closes her eyes for a moment, blood boiling, as shepulls a stone knife from her kit. It is a small, crude thing, nearly just asharp bit of rock, if not for the carved handle. The stone is a dark, dull redand the edge only barely sharp. Sakura doesn’t wince as she digs the knifeinto the meat of her right palm, watching expressionless as blood wells upthrough the cut and coats the blade. The knife is slick and pulses with magicas the blood disappears across the surface, brightening the color of the stonewith the fresh blood.An ancient song pulses in Sakura’s ears as her sight is heightened and her feetare suddenly fleet as she travels deeper into the woods. The forests of Konohaare strange; the further in one goes, the higher and larger the trees stretch.Sakura knows, as do all the diligent residents of Konoha, that the deeper theforest, the more dangerous. Where she is now, she can no longer see the nightsky, obscured as it is by the leaves and smoke above her head.

She pauses as, above the sizzle of the fire, Sakura hears anunearthly buzz. The hair at her neck stands on end as the buzz is echoed by ahigh scream. Sakura swallows convulsively, hand clenching further against theblade and drawing more blood.

Why, oh why did she have to be right about the unnatural nature ofthe fire?

Sakura glares down at her cut hand, biting her lip furiously. Whatcan she do? She’s just barely a hedge witch, unable to complete even the simplestof spells. Her lungs ache, reminding her again of how little she can do.

The buzz transforms into a howl of pain and Sakura cannot remainidle.

She continues forward, following the sounds of fighting. As shedoes, she comes upon parts of the fire and she calls on the magic in her blood.The knife flashes and the fires near her go out, leaving behind blackened, deadwood. She keeps casting magic as she moves deeper into the forest, drawingcloser to the sounds of fighting.

A glint of glowing purple catches her eyes and Sakura ducksagainst the deadened trunk of a tree, peeking around at the alien glow. Sheclutches at her bit of aquamarine as she watches the purple appear anddisappear around the thick copse. Among the flashes, there are two…beings. Oneof tall and lanky in nature, its body furred finely in motley greys and browns.It has two sets of arms and antenna. Currently, parts of its body are blackenedand a soft, pained chittering noise emits from it as it dives back into thepurple magic.

It is pursued by a shorter, dark figure, covered in resplendentblack feathers that flash blue in the fire. This being’s eyes are abright, spinning red and from its mouth emerges flame.

Rage builds within Sakura as she watches the birdlike creatureburn down the forest around her and attack the moth being. Sakura has no lovefor this forest, rather a healthy dose of fear, but still this is her home thatthe creature is desecrating. The bird creature catches the moth one with atalon-footed kick, knocking it free of its feet. The moth falls to the ground,buzzing feebly. The bird plants its foot against the moth’s shoulderblade and grabs its wing, lifting and pulling and Sakura cannot bear it anylonger.

Slicing down her palm and wrist, Sakura darts forward, throwingherself bodily against the birdlike monster. It is much lighter than sheexpected and they go tumbling into a tree. The monster beneath her grunts, butSakura keeps it pinned. It turns its head and Sakura can make out human-likefeatures, those of a surprised and volatile man. He opens his mouth, preparingto light her aflame. Sakura doesn’t give him the chance, stuffingher wrist past his lips into his mouth. He splutters and the flames die away.

“What did you do, witch?” hedemands, folding in on himself in a grotesque manner as he brings his legs upand shoves Sakura away with the talons.

The claws catch and pierce her skin, drawing blood and furtherelevating Sakura’s magic as she is thrown into the air. She braces for a hardlanding, blinking as she slams into a soft, furred surface. Sakura looks up,finding herself looking into the face of the moth creature. It wears a strangemantle, a visor really, shielding its eyes, though Sakura feels its gaze uponher. She glances around, surprised to see that she is cradled in three of itsarms. The free hand reaches up, brushing an errant lock of hair behind her ear.

“I thank you for yourassistance, Sakura Haruno.” His voice is slow and soft, gentle in a way thatbelies his visage.

“How do you know-?”

“Aburame!” the bird manshrieks.

The moth man, Aburame,grunts in pain and clutches her closer as fire sears his back. Sakura seesbeyond his shoulder that the bird man is on his feet again and glaring at them.He spits and Sakura can see her blood mixed with the saliva.

“I apologize for this,” Aburamesays.

Before Sakura can question his apology, they are surrounded inbrilliant purple light. She blinks against the harsh light, eyes streaming asit disperses and Sakura finds herself in a calm glade. She looks around wildly,scrambling out of his grasp. The grass here is a vivid pink and the gladeitself is lit with phosphorescent mushrooms and crystals. The air here tastesof magic and the iron in her blood dances with it.

Sakura falls to her knees, playing mindlessly with the grass. Itpossesses a different texture, softer and hardier than the grass back home.Every hair on Sakura’s neck and arms stands on end at the sheer alien quality of thisplace.

“Where are we?” she askssoftly.

Aburame kneels beside her, a strangely furred hand coming to restright beside hers. He doesn’t touch her, but Sakura can feel his warmth.

“We are at my home, on anotherplane of existence,” he says. He moves his hand closer, stroking across hers. “Thankyou for your kindness tonight. The Uchiha was certainly not expecting anyquarter from Konoha this night.”

Sakura can hear the pain in his voice and remembers again hisinjuries. She looks to him, seeing the pale blue glow of his blood as itsplatters his torso and mats his fur. “How do I go home?”

“Again, I must apologize. Ifear you’ve some incredibly poor luck, Sakura. I am possibly the worst personyou could’ve met tonight.” He pauses, drawing away his hand and fiddling withhis fingers in both sets of hands. He looks nervous. “I’m afraid you can’t gohome.”

And with that, Aburame slumps forward, losing consciousness.

Sakura looks at the prone eldritch creature, shocked. As she pullsout her witchery kit and sets about bandaging his wounds, Sakura again isreminded of Konoha’s motto.

“Discretion is the better partof valor.”

Why, oh whydidn’t she listen?

Naruto hot takes part 2: electric boogaloo

1) Sasuke learning healing would make more sense than Sakura thematically, and much more sense than what the hell happened in canon. 2) It would also make a lot of sense for his character in-universe. 3) On that note: Sakura should have learned genjutsu. 4) Not only would it utilize her skills better, but it would make more sense for her character arc. 5) Ino and Shino should have both been shown using poisons at some point. 6) Oh and they also should have been given actual fights that showed off their skills. Shino especially. 7) Shikamaru’s revenge against Hidan should have happened but should not have been supported. 8) Karin was a great character with a ton of potential. 9) But she shouldn’t have liked Sasuke. 10) The Sand Village is a monarchy as well as a military dictatorship. 11) Also, it was probably colonized at some point, which is why Temari, Gaara, and Kankuro all have light skin with light-colored hair (in Temari and Gaara’s cases) despite living in a desert. 12) Temari was more interesting than Gaara. Specifically in Shippuden. 13) Temari should have become Kazekage. 14) Hinata is literally the only girl from the Konoha 12 who makes sense to learn healing. 15) Literally anyone on Team 7 who isn’t Sakura would make more sense as a healer, thematically and for character arcs, than Sakura. 16) Itachi should have remained a villain. If not a psychopath, he at least should have been called out for how screwed up killing your whole clan over a ‘maybe’ is. 17) Kakashi should have died. 18) If we have to have Team Minato/Team 7 parallels, they should have been Rin/Naruto, Sasuke/Obito, and Sakura/Kakashi. 19) Minato’s actually a bad parent and probably would have been absentee had he stayed alive. 20) Basically Menma from that weird movie which I only watched half of has daddy issues. 21) Shikamaru’s kind of an asshole. 22) Tobirama’s an interesting character but he’s also a racist asshole. 23) The Caged Bird Seal is slavery. 24) And Hinata doing absolutely nothing about that makes her complacent in it. 25) Every single one of the Konoha 12 with the exception of Chouji would have been absolutely shit parents and passed on a fuck ton of generational trauma to their kids. 26) Sasuke and Sakura actually do make sense as a couple, but the writing was trash. 27) Naruto and Hinata do not and I’m 90% sure he’s just using her as a rebound. 28) Sasuke is the most accurate depiction of trauma in this whole damned show. That’s not a good thing. 29) The Uchiha Massacre should have been treated as the genocide that it was. As in, loss of culture and traditions and everything, not just Sasuke’s parents. 30) Minato is a war criminal. 31) And he’s not hot. 32) Sasuke is hot but in a pretty way. 33) Naruto’s lowkey an incel at some points. 34) Jiraiya’s creepy and disgusting, and a pedophile. 35) On that note, I didn’t feel sad at all when he died. 36) He was also a shit godfather and role model and likely most of the reason Naruto did not gain a single braincell between the original show and Shippuden. 37) ShikaTema is the only canon couple I can actually see getting together. That’s not a good thing. 38) There should have been more characters with siblings. Like, almost all of the Konoha 12 are heirs to their clans, so how come they’re all only children? 39) Even aside from that and how their parents would probably have multiple kids as a backup heir, like Hanabi for Hinata, the replacement ratio just doesn’t make sense. 40) Like Konoha should be having a population crisis if they, a military dictatorship that relies on murder for their survival, only have one kid per every two parents. 41) Sakura most definitely banged Ino at some point. 42) Obito and Madara both should have stayed dead and the main villains should have been the Akatsuki. 43) Specifically Nagato and Konan, neither of whom would change sides. 44) Konan vs Sasuke and Sakura vs Nagato. 45) The alien plot is actually being done pretty well in Boruto and much better that whatever the hell happened in Naruto. 46) On that note: every single one of the kids in Boruto has so much parental trauma heaped onto them. Refer back to point 25. 47) Minus Chocho she’s mostly good. 48) Sasuke and Naruto was more unhealthy and invalidated Sasuke’s trauma more than Sasuke and Sakura. 49) Hey Kishimoto give your main heroine an actual fucking backstory with her parents and relationship with them challenge. 50) Naruto is realistic in that the rebellion born of a genocide survivor’s anger was crushed and the fascist, unequal status quo led by a so-called underdog who actually had all the power he needed from birth including important parents and grew up to be an entitled ass who’s also an awful parent, was simply reestablished.

well naruto is a giveaway lol, gaara coz i just freaking love his character development, he’s a fucking killing machine i am honestly scared back then but now he’s a walking sunflower enigma who loves his friend naruto, shino bc he is actually really funny without knowing he’s funny which makes him more funny lol plus my boy got da drip

hinata and temari

hinata coz hello, she’s like the loml! i’d fight for her lol temari coz she has big dick energy and also she’s the sister i want growing up, i think it also stems from my love for the sand siblings coz like they’re weird and are all equally crazy, i mean, daz mah jam.

oh wow can i say the whole naruto characters? except for danzo cuz he creeps me out. ok wait hmm my answer would deffo be naruhina and team 8 but if i meet them i’ll probably cling to them until the end of time… so i’m going to say.. suigetsu? coz he’s funny and crazy unstable, we might accidentally raise armageddon or something. also thinking of kankuro, so we can like scare the living shit out of kids with his puppets also he’s one crack character, too so i think i’ll have fun. maybe we can diss gaara until he chokehold us with his sand or tease temari on how she thought shika asked her to do it until she fan our ass out of suna lol

shikamaru x neji - idk why but they look so cute in my eyes. you know like 2 boring kids who think like they’re 60 yr old geezers, idk why they haven’t play shogi together, i actually think neji can beat shikamaru in it and shika will be so shocked and immediately fall in love. plus they both have long hair. shikamaru asking neji how he grew his hair without a hint of split ends or how he maintain his silky hair something like that. they’ll get married and have that boring, lowkey relationship. shika coming home to neji babysitting himawari, them talking about some village budget cuts or diplomatic things while himawari braid neji’s hair and mirai with shikamaru’s. it’s cute to think about.

madara vs might guy. i watch it everytime i feel down. might guy fucking disrespected madara like that. i love it. 11/10. lives in my mind, rent-free. and and and itachi vs kakashi coz they’re hot lol

gentle step twin lion fists ;) and any hyuga clan jutsu, also i love eight gates, frakin sick it’s so cool but the jutsu i always like hearing is the uchiha’s katon no jutsus. itachi saying “katon” makes me go feral

hmmm i’m not really meticulous with the art style… actually i’m not sure to what definition of art style this pertains to like is this like the design of the character? idk but im just gonna go with that. yeah, i really dig the inuzukas’. it’s kinda edgy, the red fang markings really makes them distinguishable amongst other characters. like i remember when i first watch naruto, kiba was one of the first character i find cool, bc a kid… with a RED TATTOO… IN HIS FACE. plus i also thought the fur in his jacket is his hair and he also has a dog!!! so i was like “damn he’s cool, me likey”

okie nobody can deny that our main boy over here is a loud soul, however, he can also carry a damn good beat that compliments his band mates’ music really well. Tbh, he sucked at music to begin with and had trouble matching rhythms and listening to his band mates when they played, however he eventually became a really good rhythm maker.

Sasuke

-Guitar (lead)

He’d be assigned to the same band as Naruto, and that’s how they met. This boy is a damn good guitarist y’all, but has attitude problems™, and used to not be able to deal with Naruto’s haphazard beat making, thus perpetuating a rivalry between the two. He constantly feels overshadowed by his elder brother Itachi, a piano major.

Sakura

- Dance

Ya girl fucking demolishes every single dance routine. Initially starting out with a focus on ballet (pre-shippuden in canon), our pink headed queen soon realized that she wasn’t getting the full experience of what it meant to dance. Her point shoes were her loves, however they hurt and nipped in places not just physical. She realized that she didn’t want to be pigeonholed into a genre of which she would be inhibited by standard, and rather to dance so as to forget technical perfection. Thus, what would partner with post-shippuden Sakura in canon, Art School AU Sakura got into hip-hop. And bitch, she goes hard. A lot of the other girls who she used to dance ballet with admire her for her absolutely BODYING her dance routines, but also for never sacrificing her femininity to dance and not taking BS for being a girl who goes so hard in a male-dominated genre. (Some people believe that hip-hop is heavy hitting and a little metaphorically “dark” so to speak, which Sakura is not. So obviously I expect a little disagreement regarding this, however if you look at people like Delaney Glazer or Kaycee Rice, that is how Sakura would dance).

Hinata

- Creative Writing

Shy and bookworm-like, Hinata can write the best poetry, romance and adventure pieces out of all the creative-writing majors. She’s especially good at writing character relationships and development, and has such a subtle sense of intelligent wit in her writing, that if you blinked you would miss it. However should you catch it, you’re sure to chuckle. Her only struggle is that she tends to drag on in important scenes, stretching them against the regular flow of the rest of her writing. Needs validation for her writing through an IV drip.

Kiba

- Drums OR Photography

Drums for obvious reasons (loud and obnoxious), although ruff boi looks good with a camera, too. Great at landscapes and street photography.

Shino

- Creative Writing OR Photography

I could definitely see Shino having fucking beautiful handwriting, and being a beast at writing anything within the sci-fi realm. I could also see him doing some journalism, and writing for the school paper. He’s very good at the logic of his sci-fi books and coming up with logical but enrapturing stories, that intermingle knowledge and mystery. He’s a very specific type of read, however, and may not appeal to all, however if you enjoy anything similar to Star Wars or Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy, then Shino is your author. If this doesn’t float your boat, though, try photography-major Shino. He can get the best angles of bugs he sees, and has an extensive portfolio with entomology-related snapshots.

Ino

- Dance

Like Sakura, she, too, began with a focus on ballet, however began to branch out into contemporary ballet a little later than Sakura. This is another reason why Sakura switched her focuses, as she and Ino had always had a fierce rivalry for dieting (ballet dancers are pressured to be as thin as possible) as well as battling for technical perfection when they were ballet focused. As the two grew, Ino focused more so on contemporary, but can certainly do some hip-hop with Sakura every now and then, just as Sakura occasionally takes a contemporary class with her. The two still have a rivalry, however, just not to the previous extent as when they were actively competing against each other. They’re more like sisters.

Shikamaru

- Guitar (bass) OR Creative Writing OR Architecture

Smart boy’s a tricky one. He would either be a bassist, a mystery and historical fiction writer, or, of his school offers it, be great at architecture. Idrk.

Choji

- ermmmmm….. maybe graphic design? Tech theatre (props)? Vocal???

Choji is hARD dwnccnpc (that’s what she said). I could see him behind a computer screen, animating and designing games/covers/posters or whatever. He could also do something in theatre, but I don’t think he would do anything up on stage. Something like props would suit him. He might do something in music, tho???? Can he sing???? Help???

UPDATE: Choji is a band kid. He plays tuba or some shit. Big boy got big lungs.

Tenten

- Dance

Always has been, and always will be a hip-hop dancer. She wanted to be like Tsunade, a legendary dancer and followed in her footsteps, taking up hip-hop. (that’s why Sakura focused on hip-hop, too, because Tsunade mentored her and taught a few of her classes, too). Tenten is fast and can keep up with any beat. Not only is she a great dancer, but she’s also athletic, and does track and field (cross country), football, and softball at another school too, since the arts schools doesn’t offer it. Overall great dancer with styl. She’s really looked up to by some of her underclassmen for her cheery, but badass style and skill.

Lee

- DANCE (hip-hop, too)

It’s sweat. It’s burn. It’s energy. It’s Lee.

Neji

- Violin

First chair violinist in his freshman year for the school’s philharmonic orchestra. He be extra like that.

Gaara

- Guitar (bass)

He had a lonely childhood with neglectful/abusive parents, and rock music really helped him with that. Emo music is emo and often made fun of, but the songs have messages and Gaara related, so self-taught himself the bass guitar to help cope, and bring him closer to the music that salvaged him.

Kankuro

Temari

Girl can make you cry with some of her monologues. Total lead. Has a seriousness in her acting that makes her believable, however can falter on the less-serious roles. She may also double-major in whatever Shikamaru does. And she’s better at it than him.

Itachi

Boy could play any etude at age 7. Performed at Carnegie Hall when he was 10. And no, he didn’t pay to play there. The hall invited him. Began composing at 9. Has perfect pitch. Owns international awards. If he’s not at school it’s because he’s traveling to play for crowds. He excels at classical and baroque, however has an ear for romantic, and enjoys playing/composing pieces either written or inspired by romantic pieces. Enjoys Schumann, Debussy, and Tchaikovsky. Hates modern classical music, though. Can only take cinematic pieces composed by people like Williams, however can’t stand Prokofiev at all. He does like modern music, though, so long as it’s outside of the orchestral/classical music realm. He likes R&B. He would have liked to do film with Shisui, particularly producing, however his parents pressure him with piano, so he helps Shisui with student films and projects outside of school (will probably pursue film after graduating, tho).

Shisui

- FILM / VIDEO PRODUCTION

Legendary dancer. Probably toured with a few famous people. Now teaches. Mentored Sakura, and mentored Ino but for a shorter time.

what’s your interpretation of rin’s personality? i love your comics about her and it sucks that in canon she’s just Nice Girl

that's a great question, anon! and the one i've been asking myself for several years now.

first thing first: root!rin theory is an invention of @ahkaraii, and it’s the most important thing in naruto fandom.

i may be overthinking but i always thought there was something off about rin - she is not just nice girl™, she is creepily nice girl, and she is way too convenient for one certain uchiha nice girl. as i see it, writing a stereotypical love interest is not a complicated issue for a shounen author - there are a bunch of cliches and tropes that you have to combine to get such character right. rin? she is...not quite this. rin rather looks like someone who tries to be that ideal love interest (or, honestly, to be just a normal shinobi/human) but tries too hard and it spoils the impression.

if we look at rin's databook profile, we can see the formula - «kind, intellectual, devoted», and it's almost absurd that something like this is used as personality description.

what do we know from her canon appearances?

1) well, she does come off as sweet and kind, and i want to believe she was.

2) rin is quiet and reserved most of the time, and when she does speak out it's only generalized and mostly positive stuff. in childhood filler (unfortunately, it’s the only one i remember well) she also pauses before speaking or reacting in general.

3) rin often sounds way too mature for her age (plus, she must be an experienced ninja or at least well educated - in gaiden she comments on enemy's strategy and then on kakashi's usage of chakra). sometimes (mostly with obito but he totally buys it) she says things that seem kinda fake- almost like if she was taught to tell it.

i could say it’s just kishimoto’s writing but there are heroines who got little to no character development and yet still felt like, you know, human beings. rin at times seems like a completely ephemeral creature. to me, at least.

4) rin is obsessed with obito (despite narrator and then obito suggesting she was in love with kakashi). she is overwhelmingly caring - she seems to know constantly where obito is, most time she is around him (even when obito is unaware of that - i’m not sure if it was in the manga but anime has several moments like this), she is in charge of things i wouldn't consider quite normal for a childhood friend to be (like? bringing obito's documents? finding him and leading to a meeting point?). honestly, i can’t read this as simply display of friendship and affection, and i don’t see the same pattern in other relationships in the franchise. there is also an extra emphasis on the fact that rin liked kakashi both in gaiden and in war arc (as well as implementations that kakashi might have liked her back), so it’s not like kishimoto forgot about who was rin’s crush.

if i recall correctly, there is no information on how rin and obito originally meet and what was the foundation of their friendship outside of obito's aspiration to become hokage. therefore the reasoning behind rin’s obsession is unknown.

5) rin emulates obito's reactions, it's shown several times and, i would say, highlighted:

6) rin's reaction to obito's «death» seems much more reserved than kakashi's, and she quickly cuts off any visible display of her distress once obito asks to transplant his eye.

7) rin is clearly not afraid of fighting. she normally doesn’t engage in combat (i assume, the end of third war must have been the time of endorsing tsunade’s iryo-nin reform, thereby rin must have belonged to the generation of medics that followed hime’s rules to the core + rin is stopped from getting into combat by kakashi), however, both time rin was cornered by an enemy, she showed full readiness to fight.

now this is not about her personality, but:

8) rin is placed on future hokage's team, alongside the genius son of one of the strongest ninjas and the uchiha (who could actually keep up with the said genius and, as we see later, surprisingly well adjusted to hashirama cells implanted into him).

9) speaking of her abilities, rin's got a solid 4 in intelligence (among shinobi her age i can recall only shikamaru and sakura scoring 4 or higher), 3.5 in ninjutsu (shino with the same score was about to be put in the root; similar score was obtained by sasuke and neji) and 4 in hand seals, whatever that could mean. overall she's got 21 (while most of konoha11 got less than 20). impressive for a ninja coming from «a very ordinary household» [fourth databook].

10) rin is good as iryo-nin, but like...not outstandingly good, like sakura or tsunade or shizune. she carries a large rucksack (and is the only one who does that out of her team, so it's not part of common equipment) - she probably has to use more civilian methods. however, rin is able to transplant an eye with sharingan and keep its functions without any tools besides maybe her kunai; considering ophthalmology is a way too narrow specialty for a field medic and uchihas tend to keep their secrets secure, this seems pretty damn cool (and gaiden was written before eye swapping became a common thing and iryo-ninjutsu could easily heal any injury). if i don’t say suspicious. plus - rin instantly agrees to perform surgery, no second thought, no hesitation, as if she was trained to do it.

it’s also interesting that kakashi gaiden is the only part where rin is shown not from her teammates' perspective- and in gaiden she is a quiet and determined soldier who can put her duty above her feelings. when we see rin later on, mainly from obito's memories and therefore from his perspective, she is depicted as that constantly smiling and good-hearted girl most folks remember her as. it goes to the point where in the second databook rin is described as serious and capable medic-nin, while in the fourth the main focus is moved to her relationships with kakashi and obito.

i don’t want to try and get any conclusions about her personality from the circumstances of her death- i don’t believe in her voluntary death for the village, not after madara told obito about the seal.

so, what do we get from this? as i said, i've tried to sum these traits up: for a long time i pictured rin as a civilian-background girl with fascination for the shinobi world despite not quite fitting in it (which results in her overly perfected but distant behaviour). but this can’t explain her skills or her obsession with obito, and this is where the root theory comes to rescue: she then becomes a root operative, chosen by danzo for her friendship with obito + civilian background, but with personality not completely ruined by lord shimura (she probably wasn’t seen as useful enough outside the whole obito thing). the original aim of her mission was probably to keep safe and then awaken obito’s sharingan (loving the irony), not to actually steal it. rin did like (in a platonic way) obito even before the recruitment, as well as she grows to like kakashi (in a romantic way) later on, but her real, untouched by shimura and his orders personality must have remained mostly a mystery to them both.

Am I like the only one who was disappointed with Madara's rematch against Hashirama ? I wish Madara had used the techniques of Rinnegan and fire release against him, also his gunbai. Hashirama should also show some 'new' wood and earth techniques instead of Mokujin no Jutsu and Myojinmon.

Hello anon ♥ That arc is so chaotic, but there really wasn’t much. Kishimoto wanted to show us some glory days again but it was still the same old song. Most of the fight happened off screen, we have no idea how Madara got Hashirama tangled in the branches a. And anime didn’t make it longer (as far as I remember), because we’re useless Naruto fandom and we deserve only shitty fillers where Akamaru pees into a mud to save Hinata, Kiba and Shino from drowning.

We still got more than Tenten’s fans. Or Shino fans. I won’t say it would be great to have Hashirama spin off, because it’s what every fan says and I’m probably biased haha.

Also, Kishimoto couldn’t take vacation for a few years, couldn’t even go to a honeymoon with his wife because his editor made him draw Naruto, he probably wanted to get the manga over with and skipped most of the fun stuff.

Chapter 7: Bread and Circuses

Shikamaru sighed in boredom and disappointment as his friend cheered along with the roaring crowd. Down below, two minor gladiators started off the show. They had skill, all of the fighters did, but they didn't have any talent. There was no strategy, just the equivalent of two boys whacking sticks together, except these sticks were pointed and busy causing significant injury. Not so deep down, Shikamaru knew that he enjoyed the fights, especially if there was strategy. It was fun to predict the outcome and thrilling if he was wrong.

Shikamaru also knew that it was all a distraction; a way to appease the crowds and draw their attention away from the crumbling social and economic structure that the Emperor had built. He had thought about talking to his friends about it but had stopped himself before he could. It was slightly treasonous, and he was intelligent enough not to take the risk and, if he was being honest, they would probably disagree with him as most families in Rome were brainwashed to agree with The Emperor’s ideals.

Ino hadn't shown up today which was odd for her blatant love of violence, and Choji, Shino, and Hinata had joined their families in their boxes. Considering their status, it was a wonder that they ever joined Shikamaru in the stands. Yes, all of Shikamaru’s friends were clan children, but the Akimichi, Aburame, and Hyuuga were noble clans and they didn't, under principle, frequently consort with the lesser patricians. It was only the clan names that kept their parents from driving them apart. Shikamaru turned to look at the noble clans’ boxes. If he squinted just right, he could see Hinata next to her cousin and her sister, her father behind them.

Next to the Hyuuga box, the Akimichi and Aburame flanked it either side. Shino sat stoically next to his father while Shikamaru could see Choji laughing with his parents. Out of the bunch, the Akimichi were the least stuck up. Above them, the Emperor’s throne was surrounded by Uchihas. As the opening match staggered to an end, his esteemed holiness entered the box and reclined on the throne. Ah, so that was why the royal families kept their children close. They wanted to please the Emperor.

The announcer boomed from his place in the stand, his voice magnified to be heard over the crowd. “All rise for His Imperial Majesty, Emperor of Rome, and Lord of the known World: Madara Uchiha, the first of his name.” The people in the stands rose to their feet and roared their approval. Shikamaru did the same but with much less enthusiasm; it was best to keep up appearances.

It wasn’t unheard of for the Emperor to visit the arena and its gladiators, in fact he came quite often, but not to a small-scale event such as this. The roster did not hold much appeal with none of the heavy-hitters present, only fodder until the main event later in the afternoon. Shikamaru narrowed his eyes. Either it was a random appearance - unlikely - or there was an announcement to come, one important or personal enough for him to appear in public himself rather than simply send out a missive.

“People of Rome.” The Emperor’s voice echoed throughout the stadium. “I have grand news for the arena. Soon we will house another champion, the likes of which has never been seen in a gladiator fight before. Next week, the tournament will host Rome's first gladiatrix, a female gladiator!”

Once again, noise exploded from the spectators, but this time confusion and disapproval dominated the applause. Shikamaru could hear people talking around him about how a female gladiator in the arena was a disgrace to the sport, that a woman wouldn't last long in such a violent environment.

But between the outrage, Shikamaru could hear whispers of intrigue. He did have to agree, it was a new element - and therefore more interesting - but it could also be unpredictable. For this idea to succeed… this gladiatrix would not only have to defeat her competitors, but also make a spectacle, otherwise she would never be recognised.

And if she did fail, it certainly wouldn’t make the Emperor any more popular.

Beside him, Kiba nudged him in the ribs. “A chick, huh? Well I can’t wait to tell Ino, I’m sure she’ll be a fan.”

Shikamaru nodded in agreement and threw a quick glance up at the royal families. “Ino might be a fan, but I can’t say the same for the Hyuugas.”

Hiashi Hyuuga, Hinata’s father, wasn’t sneering, but he certainly looked displeased. Hinata was sharing excited words with her sister, but one look from her father sealed their lips. The Hyuuga had a history of misogyny, and it was delightfully ironic that both the heirs were female, but clearly that wasn’t enough to convince Hiashi on how proficient a woman would be in the arena.

“Yeah, but they’re stuck up,” said Kiba. “Besides, Choji, Shino, and their families seem plenty excited.” Or as excited as the Aburame could get considering their covered faces, but the Akimichi family were just as enthusiastic about the news as they were about everything else.

Shikamaru nudged him back. “And we don’t even have to wait until next week to know more.”

Kiba grinned. “We just have to ask Lee and Tenten.”

Sakura did not sleep well that night. A hay mattress on a stone slab might not be the most uncomfortable surface, but it was every noise that startled her awake, and each shadow that passed between her cell bars that sent her heart racing. She may have won the fight, but it was clear that some gladiators were more… vexed by her than impressed, and she couldn't rule out Hidan. If he decided to take revenge, then being in the same barracks wouldn't exactly be in her favour. Secure walls and doors lay between them, but Sakura had lived through enough to know those wouldn’t stop revenge.

Her injuries didn’t help either. Between those still healing since the attack on Suna, the brand smarting on her hand, and the stab wound in her leg, every movement was wrought with pain. Yes, Moegi had once again bandaged her up, but that wasn’t enough to dull the… discomfort of being impaled.

She was happy to have missed dinner. She was too tired to deal with the other gladiators and the meal she had with Moegi was sufficient enough, but would they see this as a sign of weakness?

Yet, there was nothing to be afraid of. No spectre came in the night to assassinate her and the most she heard of other people were the midnight murmurings of her cell-mates. When morning drew close and the witching hour had long since passed, Sakura finally closed her eyes and stole a little sleep before a bell clanged throughout the compound. A guard strolled into the barracks, rapping on the cell doors, others following him in.

“Rise and shine. You don’t get paid to laze around in bed all day.”

Wincing slightly as she rose from her bed, Sakura quickly pulled on a clean tunic and her sandals. She stood near the door and stretched her joints before the guard came into view.

“Out you get,” he said, opening the door. Sakura walked out to join the other gladiators who had been released from their cells. Her leg still throbbed in pain, but she wouldn’t give anyone the satisfaction of seeing her limp.

She passed Itachi and Kisame, eyeing the blindfolded Uchiha. Sakura still couldn't quite comprehend how he could be such a dangerous opponent, but even as the thought crossed her mind, Itachi’s face turned in her direction. Sakura felt a chill crawl up her spine and quickly looked the other way; it was almost as if he knew exactly where her eyes were.

The other two gladiators from Kiri stood silently near Kisame, and Sakura joined them with the other guards. Kisame gave her a wide, toothy grin, but otherwise she was completely ignored. Fair enough. She could understand wanting to keep to yourself.

Kakuzu followed her as he was let out of his cell, but the calm morning was disturbed as Hidan joined them.

“God fucking dammit. My neck hurt like a bitch last night and now I get this shit ass wake up call. What a great start to a great fucking day!”

“Shut up, Hidan. Nobody wants to listen to your whining,” Kakuzu growled.

“Fuck you, Kaku-fucker. You're not my fucking boss. And you!” At this Hidan turned towards Sakura and she tensed at his tone. Another fight was not what she was looking forward to towards before breakfast.

“You've got some big ass balls if you think I've forgotten about yesterday. And,” at this Hidan’s gaze turned less vengeful and more sleazy. “If you wanna go again, I'm not saying no, but the outcome is gonna be a lot different.”

Was he serious? Sakura still couldn’t comprehend how he could still be so horny, especially after she cut off his actual gods-damned head.

Sure, there were some in the world who took pleasure from pain, but there was a difference between a sharp, searing tug of the hair and decapitation. And although it was rare to see a man understanding of a loss handed to him by a woman, this wasn’t exactly the outcome she had anticipated.

“Yeah?” Said the guard. “Well I think it's time for you to shut your traps and head off to breakfast. And if you don’t, then it's only fair for you to go hungry. That clear?”

Hidan grumbled in discontent but it was obvious that he knew when to shut up when it counted.

Finally, Deidara and Sasori joined them, arguing quietly amongst themselves, and the guards escorted them towards the dining hall.

The hall was mostly empty when they arrived, only a few other barracks had woken up earlier and although she drew a few stares, Sakura was ignored in favour of enjoying breakfast. Perhaps her addition was not as much of an upset as she had previously thought?

She joined the rest of her barrack at their table, sitting as far away as possible from Hidan who took the opportunity of their guards leaving to once again run his mouth.

Sakura listened half-heartedly as he droned on and on about how unfair life was before she tuned out completely. Slowly chewing her breakfast, Sakura could hear more men enter the hall; gladiators claiming tables and guards taking their places along the wall, light murmuring following them.

She tensed a little every time someone walked behind her but slowly began to relax. That was until a group of men talking loudly at another table got up and strode towards her. Or to be more precise, Hidan.

“Well Hidan, who knew you’re such a shitty fighter. I mean I knew you were bad, but not enough to get absolutely fucked up by a girl.”

Slowly, the entire table turned to face the speaker.

Two men now stood in front of the table, followed by others behind them. They were similar enough in features that they were most likely brothers. Both with wild black hair, sharp eyes, and strange masks covering their mouths.

“Or was it all a show to get Pinky here a bit of a rep. What’d she pay you for it? Something worthwhile I hope.”

Sakura grimaced. As if the innuendo was bad enough, he couldn’t even think of an original nickname. From the corner of her eye she could see Hidan’s face as a grin started to stretch across it. Ah, this might not end peacefully.

“Now, now,” said Kisame. “You don’t have to start a fight, Meizu. In fact, why don’t you and your brother just turn around and finish breakfast.”

Hidan stood up. “Oh no no no, if they wanna fight, I’m more than happy to give it to them. Let’s see if the so-called ‘Demon Brothers’ hold up to their name.”

Meizu laughed. “But Hidan, you don’t understand. Gozu and I don’t want to fight you. We want to fight her.”

“Ohhhhhhhh, rejected.”

“Shut up Deidara,” Hidan sneered. “What? Too pussy-footed to fight me?” He began to step over the bench. “Well why don’t we just-”

Sakura stood up. Hidan stopped talking. She walked around the table and faced the two men. Gozu opened his mouth to speak. Before he could, Sakura punched him in the face.

Yes, a slap would have been more effective, but a punch sent through a bit more of a message, and a broken nose. Gozu doubled over in pain while his brother - Meizu was it? - snarled and rose his own fist, ready to swing.

Quickly, Sakura dropped into a crouch and whipped her leg around to catch his at it moved forward. She winced as her thigh smarted at the sudden movement, but now was not the time to stop moving.

“You fucking bitch!”

As Meizu tripped and fell, crashing into a nearby table, Gozu retaliated, blood streaming down his face and she used the moment of her sweep to rise into a high-kick and smack her foot into the side of his face. He went down again. Sakura took the opportunity to slam her heel into the small of his back and then spun back around to face Meizu who was coming at her with what seemed like a knife.

Sakura raised her elbow and blocked his attack before thrusting her fist into his stomach. He let out a gasping breath and fell to the ground. By now, the rest of their lackeys were cheering them on, but to her surprise not engaging in the fight. A previously arranged agreement? Or maybe not confident enough. As her attention drifted, she almost missed the blade moving to stab her leg. It nicked her calf as she moved to stomp down on Meizu’s face and he motionless, passed out.

Movement behind her and she ducked under Gozu’s arm and landed a cupped hand on his ear. He screeched and collapsed in front of her and suddenly everything was still. Sakura dusted off her hands and wiped a streak of blood off her cheek before walking back to her table to finish her breakfast. Nobody spoke as she sat down until Hidan let out a crowing cheer.

“How was that fuckers? And if you want round two I’m available to kick your asses too!”

As Sakura spooned more grain into her mouth, Deidara nudged her with his shoulder.

“Nice one, yeah. Maybe later we can go one-on-one.”

“Unfortunately, you won’t be training with the others today,” Genma said as he stood before the table. “You have appointments for your weapons and armour. And good work by the way, it was a good show to watch. Very clean and efficient and it’s nice to see those two get put in their place.”

“What a pity,” said Kisame, still grinning despite the early hour. “I was looking forward to crossing swords with you this afternoon. Maybe we can give that a shot tomorrow.”

Sakura looked at the men around the table, more interest in their eyes than yesterday, and by the sounds of the rest of the gladiators in the hall with their cheers for her and jeers for the brothers, more respect.

“Yes, maybe later.”

Sakura washed her breakfast down with a gulp of water and walked behind Genma out the building with faint calls of praise following her. She might have a better chance here than she thought.

“You know, Lee, I thought that you’d have better things to do than hang around in the forge all day.”

“But Tenten! It is the springtime of our youths! And! You have not left here to experience it!”

A hammer fell onto the blade, hot and malleable as each strike shaped a dangerous edge. Tenten set down the hammer and lifted the blade eyeing it before placing it back down and continuing with her strikes. “But I have a very important order to finish and as much as I’d like to leave I can’t. Also, I just don’t want to.”

Lee’s eyes trembled as they filled up with tears and Tenten braced herself for the onslaught.

“Tenten! You cannot mean what you say! You must be passionate about y\Youth and embrace it!” Lee sobbed it all out, as water and snot poured down.

Tenten sighed. This time as she lifted up the blade, she plunged it into water; it hissed as the water evaporated into the air. This time she was satisfied with its shape. “Maybe later Lee, but not now.” She walked towards the grinder and set to work sharpening the would-be sword as Lee remained blubbering on the floor. “And I have an appointment soon, so either you should leave or make yourself useful. There’s a cloth on the bench, hand it to me if you could, and there’s another one there for you to blow your nose.”

Lee did as she asked and soon the blade was sharp and polished, almost ready for the rest of the engravings, handle, and pommel. But first, she glanced at the clock, her appointment. As she put away her tools a knock sounded at the entrance and a guard poked his head around the frame. It was Genma.

“Ah, Tenten. I’ve brought you your new fitting.”

He walked in and behind him followed a girl, no a woman. Tenten had heard the news but it was still strange to see. However, it was clear that Lee hadn’t heard anything for as soon as he set eyes on her he froze. If Tenten didn’t know any better, she’d think he was petrified, perhaps in fear, but no. It was simply the calm before the… Lee.

Lee jumped into motion. “To see such a beautiful blossom in such a place is a miracle! I declare my love for you!” He ran towards her, but just before contact the woman dodged and Lee went straight into the wall.

There was silence as they all stared at Lee, at one with the stone.

“Apologies,” said the woman. “He startled me.”

Tenten smiled. “No worries, he’s like that. Why don’t you tell me what armour you prefer and then I can get to work.”

Not really anything to add at the end of this one, it was mostly just a bit of a fun filler chapter. There is the fact that gladiators generally slept on a stone slab and a straw mattress and as they fought in the Colosseum, they could buy better decorations/furniture for their rooms.

Hmu if I’ve missed something, and maybe, if we’re lucky, there’ll be a new chapter out in the near future.

I have edited all the chapters up to this one as of 2/2/19. Nothing major to the plot but it might be worth re-reading.

Wish: In an AU where Orochimaru never took Danzo up on his offer for labs, Sarutobi dumps a trio of genetically-altered brats on him and hands him a ‘Teaching for Dummies’ book, which is not appreciated. Turns out, Orochimaru is pretty good with kids, but thinks he isn’t. Nobody else is buying that lie though.

Likes: Snakes being awesome. And Orochimaru being awesome. I blame @blackkatmagic. She did this to me.

That’s a very interesting question, Anon. I think that if Itachi had another younger sibling, they would have been included in Danzo’s manipulative plan from the beginning. He tried to appeal to those that Itachi cared the most about, and leaving one sibling behind would assure Itachi tried to consider other possibilities, maybe reaching the clan. So, if Danzo did include both, nothing would have changed from canon. Except, maybe, Sasuke’s attitude after the massacre, with two Uchiha alive, the burden is better distributed, they are together to endure the trauma. (I use this parenthesis to remind everybody that Danzo never planned to fulfill any promise and the very moment Itachi died, both Uchiha siblings would have been chased and killed.)

But let’s imagine Danzo only insinuated the survival of Sasuke, there would be three possibilities: first, the massacre takes place and the other sibling is killed; second, the massacre takes place and Itachi leaves Konoha with the other child; or third, the massacre doesn’t take place.

On the scenario number one, we consider the other sibling wasn’t as important to Itachi as Sasuke was. I’m not talking only about love, but about obsession: Itachi’s actions weren’t born solely of love but of an intense desire nascent of trauma that made him value innocence and peace over anything else. Sasuke wasn’t only his little brother, he was his anchor and the materialization of Itachi’s hopes. This might happen if Sasuke was the oldest of the two and Itachi got to pour his whole desperation into him before the other sibling even existed. However, keeping Itachi’s personality in mind, this is highly unlikely: innocence would be a virtue of both and the obsession would cross both siblings.

I think there are plenty of fics for the second option. Nevertheless, Itachi will never willingly put his brother or sister in Akatsuki’s —a terrorist organization— hands. First, he would try to leave them to a civilian family that lives very, very far away from Konoha, one that has little knowledge about the shinobi world. If that doesn’t work, his last resource would be taking them with him. He might create a series of lies to explain their presence.

If there wasn’t an Uchiha Massacre, Itachi will be obligated to fight against Konoha or flee with his siblings before the war. I think he would choose the second, that way, the children would not be exposed to the violence and death the Coup d’état would guarantee. Nevertheless, this would be an almost impossible decision: in canon, Itachi only chose Sasuke over Konoha after his death. ~ Admin Night

First impression

The first attractive Uchiha. Too bad he’s batshit crazy. Voted ‘Most Likely to be an Actual Bag of Salt in a Trench Coat’ 15 years in a row, by Obito and the Zetzu Gang. But damn if that wasn’t the most badass character introduction I’ve ever seen. Let’s pause the episode and look up some fanfiction (I literally did this ahaha)

Impression now

The second most attractive Uchiha (Shisui beat you there, because he’s not crazy and I love his personality). He actually is batshit crazy (who would willingly live in a cave connected to a tree? Only you Madara, only you). Probably obsessed with his hair. Very fun to tease (in fact, he’s my favourite character to poke fun at. Sibi likes to torture Madara a lot little bit

Favorite moment

LOOK AT HOW EXCITED HE WAS AND THEN HOW DISAPPOINTED!!! Pouting Madara is my favourite Madara. Have I mentioned recently that I love teasing him? That is the essence of how I write him XD

Idea for a story

So many! I actually have a MadaSakuKaka story that is veeeery roughly started. The premise is this: Kakashi and Sakura are celebrating their engagement, when the doors to the restaurant open, and both start panicking. Why? Because their ex just walked in the door. That ex? Madara, of course. Both Kakashi and Sakura start kind of panicking, because it was a bad breakup, and neither knows the other dated him. Things get interesting from there, if you know what I mean (insert all the winking faces—no, insert Jiraiya’s pervy, sorry super pervy grin).

Unpopular opinion

Hashirama was a bad friend. He didn’t fight enough on Madara’s behalf, and didn’t support Madara half as much as a man grieving over losing the last member of his family needed. Instead of standing up for Madara when people were discriminating against him because they found him intimidating, Hashirama is shown (again and again) just doing what everyone else (the village, the daimyou, Tobirama) wants him to do. If Hashirama made more of an effort to be an actual friend instead of treating Madara as a means to an end (ie to form the village) then Madara would have been happy and not gone off the deep end. Hashirama was right that Madara needed something/someone new to love after Izuna’s death, but at the first sign of resistance to his ideas, Hashirama would always give in. And Madara is the type of person who doesn’t think he should have to convince others to care for him. It’s either you do or you don’t (and if you do, then it’s completely). Hashirama showed that he didn’t really care for Madara as Madara, he cared for him as the Uchiha Clan Head. And once Madara had relinquished that position (or been kicked out of his clan) then Hashirama didn’t really see any value in him. Hashirama wanted Madara around for selfish reasons.

Favorite relationship

I really respect Madara’s relationship with Izuna. We don’t see a lot of them together, but I really like the Uchiha Version™ of love (even if it makes them go a little crazy). It’s the type of Ride or Die love that Hashirama couldn’t give Madara, and maybe because of that, all other forms of love are seen as lacking—pale imitations—to an Uchiha who loves so completely. Could any type of love ever measure up to that level of devotion? I don’t think most people give that much of themselves to others, and maybe that’s why Hashirama couldn’t fill the gap Izuna left in him. I totally understand why the Uchiha go crazy when their loved ones are gone. If I had to chose a fictional brother, you can bet your ass it would be Madara. He’s far from perfect, and he’d probably be overprotective and snappy because of it, but he’d have your back no matter what. And I’ve found, in my own life, that those types of people are indispensable. There is nothing more reassuring, more confidence boosting, than knowing that no matter what you do, you will be unconditionally loved. When you have that type of love, you feel like you could conquer the world.

Favorite headcanon

This is actually something that I think @thetoxicstrawberry or @kunoichi-ume brought up, I can’t remember. But I like the idea that, when she was alive, Madara’s mother used to brush his hair for him at night, making sure it was always tame and tangle free. (I think that) when she died, he cut it off in his grief, and then automatically regretted it. He has never cut his hair since, although he doesn’t give it the care his mother used to, which is why it’s so wild.
