Review of drama:

Good action scenes and good whump. No aftercare for those who were looking for it. Very realistic whump and clear exhaustion is seen in the behavior of the characters in the later episodes when they have been going through the tomb for hours. I like the character development for Ma Da Dan, who also got the ending he deserved, after all the trials of the tomb. Luckily, I was able to post this exactly one year after the previous one. I apologize to anyone who was waiting for it, though seeing the amount of interaction on the previous one, not many people were. I will start working on the third season soon, for those looking for it. If I missed anything, please feel free to let me know and any requests for whump lists are welcome. 1. Last song: Shishen Take On the Challenge from The Yin-Yang Master: Dream of Eternity soundtrack (which I paid a small fortune to get my hands on so you bet I've been listening to it almost non-stop ever since. The music is SO FUCKING GOOD OKAY)

2. Favorite color: Purple — which I feel should come as a surprise to no one xD

3. Currently watching: The Killing Vote, because I apparently need more dramas where the Korean public is allowed to vote on whether or not to execute people. Quite enjoying it so far! The characters are a hoot xD And I'm curious to see what they do with the Kwon Seok Joo dude.

I also just started The Guest because I want to watch it before they remove it from Netflix but BOI. That's not one I'll be able to binge, that's for sure. Horror is great but also, well, terrifying x'D

Though, I must say, I might have to take a detour and rewatch the Along With the Gods movies. I've been meaning to do so for ages and seeing Kim Dong Wook in The Guest makes the urge even stronger. Because, let me tell you, I'm SO EAGER to rewatch the movies and observe the characters now that I've seen the twist at the end of the second movie. A twist I figured out before I actually reached the reveal, sure, but I don't think that's a bad thing? Like, for real, guys. The AUDIBLE GASP I let out when I realised what the twist was going to be and then got to sit there and see it slowly dawn on the other characters? BEAUTIFUL. And it CHANGES SO MUCH. Like, I need to rewatch them because so much of what I thought I knew is now a lie! Circumstances have changed! My initial analysis might be wrong! Characters I thought I knew are now completely different! I need to do more research! I NEED TO KNOW.

(This is what happens when your brain works like mine. And one day I might tell you all about why Kang Yo Han is such a fascinating character to me, because, let me tell you, I've rarely seen a character remain so solid in his characterisation even through the kind of reveals we're given in the drama. It's fucking SPECTACULAR)

4. Currently reading: Faust by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (I do it in bursts because it's not the kind of book I can just binge, okay? x'D), We Have Always Lived In the Castle by Shirley Jackson (I would have finished this LONG ago if it didn't give me so much anxiety (but in a good way?)) and Eld by Mats Strandberg and Sara Bergman Elfgren (though I should probably start over on this one since I was very distracted when I read the first chapter)

let's compare Angelina Jolie & Alicia Vikander who both played Lara Croft

Angie has something to her that makes her very convincing in action roles. Like you genuinely believe she could kick your ass. She's slim but still very tough looking.

Alicia is more delicate, dainty, soft and petite looking. She looks like someone you need to protect.

Any body who looks convincing in an action role is easily a Natural type (Jolie is a verified FN)

I suspect Alicia to be a Soft Classic

Its hard to say they all project the same "image". Imo Naturals are the most common type as well as the most diverse, if you look at the list of verified FNs & SNs you see people who look very different from each other. This is not so much the case for Rs, TRs & SDs.

Nobody would ever cast them for the same role. They do not project the same image.

Naturals are the most common because MOST people don't look good in heavy makeup & styling, or have waspish waist definition. MOST people have wider torsos and a Natural like build. The reason why lesser common IDs dominated the entertainment industry in the 20th century is because you had to be truly unique and distinct from others in order to be a "star". From the 90s onwards with the rise of supermodels, who are almost always FNs btw, Naturals became far more represented in the media but since this type can facially look very different from each other, its not always understood in terms of "image identity". Diet & exercise culture promoted the Natural ideal because they are the ones who can have a lean yet athletic built and suit the kind of clothes that fast fashion companies sell. There is a reason why jeans and tshirts are the most common articles of clothing in this world. They are most flattering on Natural types.

Most VS Angels are FNs

Fashion houses hire models who have a "rectangular build" (their words not mine) because of the way they carry the clothes; the focus remains on the clothes not on their body or silhouette. They don't need clothes tailored to fit them because they're frame dominant.

with someone like Liz Taylor (verified R) or Salma Hayek (verified TR) the focus will always be on their body and not the clothes themselves. This makes curve dominant women unsuitable for high fashion where they have to sell clothes not themselves.

Anyways, coming back to my point. Certain people are extreme caricaturish examples of their ID. Some are less so. Individual essences can also make typing more complicated. At the end of the day, every individual is unique and its important to consider their individuality (vibes, body, face, mannerisms) before settling on an ID.

If you read Metamorphosis by David Kibbe, he speaks of yin-yang & IDs in an almost spiritual, metaphysical way. Its very interesting. Maybe I'll post some excerpts from his book one of these days. But I highly recommend reading it!! The whole concept of Kibbe is about using styling to accurately project who you are as a person and like Claire Nakti makes connections regarding how different nakshatras manifest physically in a person, there is a correlation between one's appearance and one's inward nature.

Main Female Villain and the Treatment of Mental Illness

Hexadecimal Vs Azula

Out of the two series these characters have the most in common with one another. Both are the leading female villain and the more powerful sister to a earlier showcased villainous brother. Both have a sinister musical score that plays when they're about to make an appearance. Both have a supposed mental disorder or illness showcased by the narrative. Both when confronted by the heroes require more to defeat then her brother as her schemes have a unique form of intelligence and genius to them that often causes quite a lot of damage. Both’s declining mental state in linked with an aspect of their appearance, with Azula it’s her hair, with Hex it’s her mask. Both have very little social graces and are unable to properly attract the affections of a guy they’re interested in. Both are sexualized more so then the heroic female sibling. But there is a fundamental change in their treatment.

Hexadecimal is a character whose personality is also linked to her unique design. Her face is a static mask that requires being swapped out for a change in expression. This swap happens in seconds often requiring her character model to break line of sight with the audience, either through a turn of the head or swipe of the hand across her face. These static opera inspired theatre masks reflect her personality. There’s no transition. In the same way the mask can shift from one extreme to another, Hexadecimal can go from pleasant and kind one second, to maniacal laughter and bone chilling the next. A huge part in that goes to the phenomenal voice acting of  Shirley Millner.

A case could be made that Yang’s attempt at writing a post series Azula comes close to the rapid mood swapping of Hexadecimal but there is a fundamental issue with that. While Azula is presented as dangerous when her mood changes quickly, Hexadecimal is presented as dangerous when she’s bored. And the emphasis is entirely necessary. Her quick mood changes are presented as just the way she is and she’s not particularly any more dangerous when her mood switches from happy and having a good time, to angry-scream-your-face-off. What makes Hexadecimal dangerous is her alignment.

Hexadecimal and Megabyte are two extremes, chaos and order respectively. Mainframes usual state is a balance in between. You could equate this to Raava and Vaatu.

The problem with Raava and Vaatu that many picked up on is that they are simplified into one being good and the other being evil, the Catholic God and devil analogy which doesn't work in something like Taoism. Good and evil are nebulous concepts that are affected by societal ideals and standards and are not some one size fits all check list. Ying and Yang are the idea of opposites whose heart is reflected in the other neither good nor bad.

This idea of extremism and the healthy medium is something reflected in another Mainframe Entertainment program Beast Machines the chaos of organic life and the uniformity of the mechanical. Order and Chaos. Only the healthy medium will bring balance to the world. (Sorry couldn't resist)

Enough about the concept of Chaos/Order/Balance, back to Hexy.

Like I said Hexadecimal's mental state is linked to her mask just as Azula’s is linked to her perfectly symmetrical bangs. There's a portion of the story where Hexadecimal's mask gets damaged and results in her being more volatile and erratic, this is probably Hexadecimal at her most dangerous. Something we can reasonably assume is that her volatile outbursts when her mask is cracked is due to her being in pain from the damage itself. But even in this volatile and aggressive state the hero Bob remains calm and offers Hexadecimal compassion and one particular act actually wins her over.

Now this scene might need some explanation. This takes place during the final arch of season three. Season three was 16 episodes long separated into four archs that were four episodes long each. The first arch took place after the first war in the series known as the Web Wars, culminating in Bob the series protagonist and hero being sent into the web with no hope of return.

Megabyte and Hexadecimal are left with a very dangerous Weapon of Mass Destruction that being a laser that the Viruses and Mainframers had to band together to create to fight the web creatures that were about to invade the system. Hex aims it at the principal office and Megabyte attempts to intimidate the heroes into standing down so he can take over the system little known fact though, if Hex decides she wants to do something or not do something you can’t really tell her otherwise.

She wanted to watch the Principal Office blow up cause it would be fun, and despite Megabyte telling her doing so would destroy the core and by extension the system and them along with it, she still wants to blow it up for funsies. You could make an argument that she might survive the system crashing, but still.

This is where I brake to talk about the character placement: One of the biggest things that Reboot has going for it that Avatar did not in their portrayals of these two is they knew where to keep Hex.

Azula had far too much screen time and focus in comparison to Ozai our main villain and in so doing she hijacked the main villain spot. Ozai was boring to put it plain and simple despite being voiced by Mark Hamill the iconic voice actor for the Joker in Batman the animated series. This is such a huge issue that fans of the show still form head-canons and ideas that a fourteen year old girl is secretly the mastermind behind Ozai. Azula is a henchmen, people act like she’s the Joker when she’s NOT. Azula has more in common with Harley Quinn than she does the Joker. Hexadecimal on the other hand... 

Hexadecimal has always been a separate Villain from Megabyte despite her relation with him as his sibling the two don’t normally pair up. Hexadecimal also doesn’t often take the spotlight from Megabyte as the main villain, despite causing more damage when she does come up with a scheme. She’s just doesn’t have plans like him, like she says “He got the brains while she got the power.” This power is something Megabyte has always coveted and desired to use for himself and he gets his chance in episode two.

That weapon of mass destruction I mentioned earlier? Yeah a game cube dropped on part of it and overloaded it while Hex was holding onto it. It very nearly killed her akin to electrocution, like she was a charred, twisted, burnt to a crisp, smoking corpse. Megabyte had her picked up and healed her with a caveat, she now has a shock collar around her neck that causes her so much pain that she literally passes out the first time its used on her, and the controls are on Megabyte’s wrist.

He effectively turns her into a living weapon. She’s imprisoned locked in a cell with her hands and feet bound and hurt when she disobeys. The heroes are even horrified that Megabyte has done this to his sister before they finally seal him, his army, and Hex inside a firewall. Season 3′s second and and third arch don’t focus on Mainframe but we are given flashbacks of what happened during the 13th episode Megaframe where its revealed Hex eventually broke out of Megabyte’s containment was rightfully pissed and destroyed his base, the firewall, most of his men, and half of Mainframe in her resulting warpath against him before she retreated to her lair and sulked.

So at this point, Hex has nearly died, been imprisoned and abused, she notices her favourite guardian is back in the system and essentially kidnaps him, makes him dance with her, and have a tea party all under threat but Bob doesn’t fight her. Unlike a certain someone.

Bob is calm, patient, compassionate even. Hexadecimal is dangerous there is never any doubt about that but she is also hurting and even admits to being scared. His desire to leave is only to help out the rest of his friends that are dealing with a battle against Megabyte while he’s stuck with Hex. He could fight her, make a portal and escape but he doesn’t. Bob recognizes Hex is hurting and he takes the time to help her.

The image of her slowly taking in her new moving features, the slow smile and the way she touches her face in awe is one of those moments in cartoons that have been burned into my brain. He made her feel whole, for the first time in her life, you can tell by her smile that this feels good. And she closes her eyes in this thankful expression and says “For you Bob... Anything.” There is such a gravity in that when we see Hex’s final arch.

There can be no doubt Hexadecimal loved Bob, she’s incredibly overt about it, but in the end she acknowledges that he does not hold her in his heart the same way she does him. And in the end she makes the choice to sacrifice herself to save him and by extension the world so that he could be happy with the person he loved.

This is not a death by redemption. Hexadecimal made the choice to switch over due to her affection for the man who made her feel whole for the first time in her life. “For you Bob... Anything.” Was the moment Hexadecimal made that switch from enemy to ally. It’s not an easy transition and characters like Dot and Matrix are not receptive to her change.

This is not something that can be said for Azula especially post series. Azula is rarely viewed with compassion either, and her post series work and even that of finale reeks of abelism.

Hexadecimal is never treated as wrong for being quick to flip her emotions, or having a strange sense of humour, its simply how she is as a person and even after her death characters will refer to these situations as just who she is. Even after her mask is given the ability to transition it doesn’t erase her quirky nature it just... lets her transition more smoothly.

Azula on the other hand is treated as a lost cause, dangerous, and unpredictable. It’s used as a reason for the comic’s to treat her terribly because Azula was apparently the main villain now.

In the end these two had archs that worked in reverse, Azula lost her stability as season 3 went on while Hexadecimal gained it, and in the end both met their demise by love. Azula by having it repeatedly revoked from her, while Hex walked willingly to it with the people who cared the most for her trying to talk her out of it.

Favorite Character: Castiel, but only by just a little bit. Generally, Team Free will as a whole.

Favorite Arc/Episode/Scene: I love Cas' season 6 arc, even though I don't think it was super well done as a whole. I just really like when a character wants to do something right so badly they end up on the wrong side.

Character I Think is Underrated: Rufus. We never got enough time with him.

Character I Think is Overrated: Lucifer. I just got so tired of him by Season 14 I wanted him gone.

Favorite Ship/Pairing: Destiel

Something I Love About the Show/Movie: The weird episodes were always so much fun. And just the bad writing so I have all of this space to play around in.

Review of drama:

Ok so it was very very interesting. /gen I'm not joking. In the beginning, I definitely got like lost tomb vibes but after some time and thought, I realized, I shouldn't compare the two. There many differences, including the appearance of supernatural beings. Also no cute gay moments between any characters so that was a shame. It was a lot more subtle or at least more natural seeming creatures in lost tomb while candle in the tomb did not hold back. I really enjoyed it and literally breezed through it. No regrets and I shall go on to the second season! (which will also have a whump list) (coming soon to theaters near you!) I hope you enjoy! It's a great show.

2024 Reading Goals

Hello hello! Happy New Year to all!

Fun fact, by posting this at 11:00am GMT, 2023 has officially ended in all inhabited countries as UTC -11 is the last inhabited timezone.

I haven't been a resolutions person for a couple of years now but I admit I do love a challenge and goal setting. I also love reading. I'm sure you don't need the title to tell you where this is going. I've had goodreads since Sept, 2016 and have been taking part in their reading challenge since 2020. I've met my goal evey year except 2021 and I hope to make three years in a row this year!

2023's goal was an ambitious 48 books and I somehow managed to read 48 (I attribute a good 1/3 to getting a library card and access to libby). 18 of those books were comics/manga though and while I do believe anything with a ISBN counts, I'd like for comics & manga to only be about 25% of my books instead of the current 38%. I feel like I might be setting myself up a bit but I'm not going to be too upset if at the end of the year, I don't lower the percentage. This is just a bit of fun.

Yu-Gi-Oh GX characters as Final Fantasy classes in the context of my fic Sons of The Stars.

With explanations that might only actually make sense to me unless you've read the fic and played the FF games akaksk

Jaden - Thief

Fights with daggers/other short swords ninja sword if ur playing FFXII 👀 he doesn't ever actually steal anything except Jesse's heart 😏 but otherwise aligns well with the class imo. He's got the energy yet seriousness a lot of Thief characters in FF have Locke, Yuffie, Rikku, Zidane, etc, he's clever and agile, and he fights mainly for self defense and only if he has to. He tends to try a lot of stealth to get out of having to fight. Sneaky little man.

Alexis - Knight

Standard sword class, similar to Warrior. Fights with a two handed greatsword, and she chose to train herself to fight so that she could defend. That way she would be able to protect Atticus even though she'd left her station as princess of their dimension and was living in hiding on her own. She still cared about her people and wanted her brother to be safe, knowing there were people who wanted the royal family dead and gone. She'd rather protect the crown than be the crown in that sense.

Chazz - Warrior

Standard sword class similar to Knight. Fights with a one handed sword, but he didn't choose. He's been trained to fight to be a soldier for many years because of his family, and is being trained to fight to fight. Unlike Alexis, it was all about the glory for him because there was no other choice. He gained favor with Crowler, chancellor of their dimension, being so young and yet so highly skilled, which only ultimately put more pressure on him by his family to be the greatest warrior in their entire dimension. A feat which he attained by the time of the fic, when the J-Squad was only 17 years old.

Bastion - Black Mage

Not a dedicated Black Mage since he uses spells like Protect and Shell during the fic and even a standard Cure spell, but his main source of defense is his magic. His main elemental type would be water cuz water dragon ofc but he's only seen casting Thundara, Blizzara, and Thundaga during the events of the fic. And obviously as a Black Mage, he carries around a cool wizard staff 😌

Jesse - Summoner

Fairly straightforward, his main source of combat is summoning his Crystal Beasts and providing support to the others on the field.

Hassleberry - Berserker

Again. It's Hassleberry so pretty straightforward. He manages to never lose control in SoTS he loses it in OUAD though but very much has the capacity to. Having suffered for 2 years pre-fic as a military experiment in his and Jim's dimension after the accident with his leg left him with his animalistic side due to the dinosaur bone in his leg, and their scientists attempting to strip him of his humanity in order to weaponize him because they're fucking terrible people. Thx for breaking him outta there Jim 😭 Though he also aligns a little with the Monk class as well since like characters like Yang, Sabin, Tifa, Zell, and Snow, who in tradition FF job systems would fall under that class, his weapon is his fists 😌

Jim - Beastmaster

He'd also potentially fall under FFV's Chemist class since he's a scientist of sorts in the fic, or maybe even Geomancer dipping into his archeology and paleontology guy stuff. But factoring in Shirley, I'd sooner class him as a Beastmaster/Tamer.

Axel - Freelancer

Guy's a mercenary, he can do anything. If he had a weapons specialty, he'd be a Gunner/Machinist he literally gives Jim a gun before the final battle with Yubel, but he's a jack of all trades. He just kinda does whatever he feels like it or whatever is best to get the job done.

Bonus since he's extremely important to the fic but isn't actually a party member:

Syrus - White Mage

Sy actually was originally supposed to be an actual party member since he's my favorite character oh wow, I wonder why he's so important to the plot, like the fate of the entire universe hinges upon his safety 🤔 but it just didn't really end up happening, and considering his position in the fic it unfortunately makes sense to me that he isn't. But whether in the context of this fic or in canon, or literally any context, Sy is the team White Mage. Stereotypically a very weak and squishy, low defense/low attack class which I mean... yeah. But I've always thought he'd have a very strong magic stat which most White Mage's do Rosa, Porom, Aerith, Garnet, Eiko, Yuna (literally the strongest magic stat in FFX), Vanille and if he was able to be a party member he'd the team healer. Who can also tear holes in the space time continuum to open portals to travel through dimensions 😌

I was so excited for literal Anne Shirley Cuthbert to be in stranger things and GAY and it’s still kind of cute but idk it’s just flat and I don’t know if they want us to care about Rickie (Robin Vickie) or if it’s just meant to be just. There and maybe Vickie will be more involved next season? Probably not- I mean we saw the absolute least of Vickie, less than Chrissy, and I think the whole babble thing this season was FINE but it seemed like more of a lazy way to connect Robin and Vickie in the end- like oh she talks a lot too and is? Mad at her ex boyfriend and nervous around Robin? so they’re perfect together? But also some queer relationships can just be easy and quick yeah but would I sacrifice Anne Shirley into a sacrificial pit for them to put that effort (and all the cringey Stancy effort SO MUCH effort into making me want that and I never will) into Ronance, two people who talk more than once and have some tension and push/pull between them and we care about both equally and also yin/yang style gfs???
