Scream Wardrobe HCs Pt 2- Billy Loomis

Billy wears a weird blend of prep and grunge in the movie, so I tried to work with that while also considering how his style would develop after high school, because I think going to college and having an ounce more self acceptance would lead to some new threads for him

Tommy Hilfiger & Calvin Klien

This one seems obvious, I didn't put any polos here because we all know he wears them

He's got a bunch of their pullovers and button downs, they're simultaneously a prep brand but with looser fits and styles so they slide into the grunge vibe a little

definitely has one of the oversized horizontal stripe sweaters (a la kurt cobain)

He definitely has a pair of the CK cords (bottom row on the right) they've got that good soft/ridged texture, good for covert stiming

Also CK was controversial for putting up these massive homoerotic billboards and he doesn't even know but those pictures of marky mark grabbing his dick did some subliminal messaging

2. Levis

Boy got the 501 jeans in a few colours (blue pictured here but I think he would have the black ones too)

obvious obligatory plaid shirts, mostly in blues and greys

DENIM JACKET. I refuse to believe this kid didn't do the incredibly 90s denim on denim look at some point. Its really, really gay and he has no idea

3. Denim cut offs

This is his only pair of shorts, he almost never wears them

Stu keeps pulling at the loose threads at the bottom so they're slowly getting shorter and shorter

4. The classic 90's white tank top

Starts wearing these as undershirts, slowly they turn into just shirts, he wears them under unbuttoned shirts and stuff

Makes Stu lose his mind a little (Sorry, the shirt is slightly see though, Stu needs help)

5. Big fleece lined hoodies

Boy likes a hood, sometimes you gotta not show your face

Has a habit of pulling the sleeves over his hands, which he isn't actually aware he's doing but Stu thinks its cute

in high school he probably has a plain one(on the left), later gets the sick Nine Inch Nails one and Stu likes to steal it (also Stu calls the band Nine Inch Males and it makes Billy want to strangle him)

6. Obligatory turtleneck

These were massively popular, Skeet Ulrich had one

I just think he's pretentious and he goes to film school, this bitch has a turtleneck idk what to tell you

Boy almost never wears sneakers, he likes the thick soles and the shit-kicking vibes

He gets a pair of the brogues (on the far right) in college during his turtleneck phase but still wears the ankle-high ones lots

8. Obligatory 90's leather pants and jacket

He buys these in like 1998/99, its the gayest thing he's ever done and it's because Trent Reznor wears them

This is basically lingerie to Stu, he's a weak man

Pt. 2 of my plushies sorry it took so long, hope they brighten your day

Small bed plushies

Zosia and Dunky

Zosia is my favourite and one of my oldest plushies, I got her 15 years ago. Her fabric is old and worn and is reminiscent of a soft towel but it used to be much smoother. Her eyes are really banged up and she has lots of stitches on her neck because of the washing machine and time. I used to sew clothing for her with my grandmother and would use any doll clothing I had for her instead, now she just has some kandi necklaces. Two for my favourite characters (Mike Chilton and Texas from motorcity) and one that I made for her. One time I lost her and was so distraught that I put up lost posters around my neighborhood and my parents secretly ordered a replacement for me online, but I found her before the other one showed up and it was given to my brother.

I got Dunky from my grandmother for Easter a few years back. Another victim of the dryer but thankfully the texture isn’t too bad because of his fabric already being short and only slightly fuzzy. Over the years his hair tuff has puffed up into a little Afro puff. I love how he is anatomically incorrect with actual legs and arms instead of claws and wings, I think it looks cute with his beady eyes.

Meowko and Pusheen

Meowko is a little plump sausage roll of a uni-cat. Their fabric is slightly longer than Dunky’s and is really fun to pet and scratch. His mane is very fun to flick back and forth. Only down side is their horn has no stuffing and gets crushed really easily.

Pusheen was gifted to me by my brother for my birthday. I used to have a Pusheen hyper fixation but I only have a little bit of merchandise left. The whiskers are frayed and her sound box that doesn’t work anymore but I love her color scheme and like squishing her.

Hamburger and Bulby

Hamburger is a Pokémon Drowzee plushie. He is the size of a hamburger and can be held like such hence the name. Similar soft towel texture to Zosia.

Bulby had the biggest burn marks from the dryer and the texture was so bad I had to sew over it But I’m really happy with how he looks now. It adds extra nice texture and makes him completely unique.

Kirby and Pompom

A little ball basically but very cute and a great traveling size, has a little loop where their tag used to be and fits perfectly on my wrist.

Pompompurin squishmallow very soft and stretchy fabric that most squishmallows have. He’s one of my favourite plushies for stiming: squishing, hitting, playing with the pin, and squeezing him. His whipped cream hat is “stiffer” being more tightly packed with stuffing.

Gizmo and Oliver

Gizmo is a bit hard as he has a vibration/heartbeat mechanism in him but it’s really nice and a good stim. As you can see he’s supper fluffy and nice to pet, and he’s got little bean in his feet :)

Oliver is a bean bag heat pack type of guy. Old and raggedy but smells like lavender and helps with pain relief. He also doubles as a weighted plushie.

zosia!!! it’s so sweet how you have had her for so long, and how much you love her!!! i love how you used to make clothing for her too omg that’s amazing!

dunky is very cute, i love his little puff of hair on his head! and i agree that the anatomically incorrect arms and legs make him cuter lol

There are so many body language things that Patrick does/did that I also do and I would sound insane if I talked about them. Sometimes I see someone comment on something he does and I'm like "I do that! Also.. he's just stiming"

Specifically when he bites his lip or the inside of his cheek, and in relation to that also when he's chewing gum in an interview because I know that I will chew gum sometimes to try and not bite the inside of my cheek/skin on my lips.

And also during srar/abap when he would wear those like thin cardigans and do sweater paws like a teenage girl, I do that. I do that because I'm short, and my arms are proportional, so my sleeves are always a little too long but not long enough to go past my hands so I grab the ends of them and maybe Patrick is the same(this for me is also a form of stiming)

one aspect i wish more people understood about them: he is smart and cautious but also hesitant he will gladly pick a fight he knows he can win like ruffling up the Delcancys when there's 20+ newsies behind him there's no shot he loses many gets roughed up but not eating pavement but the strike? No chance he tried to call it off for something more safe and he also doesn't want to go to Brooklyn alone he knows the fights he can win but he's also one of the first newsies to be won over for the strike in Seize The Day it starts with Davey then Jack then Crutchie and Race together then Finch at "Once we've begun" and he's not an optimist but can be convinced to have a little hope

Shae’s First Date

For anyone who is bored: the most brief (that I can recap because ya girl is a lengthy heaux) summary of my first date goes as follows:

EDIT: THIS SHIT AIN'T BRIEF. SORRY NOT SORRY 🤷🏿‍♀️🤷🏿‍♀️ But I put a TLDR at the end.

I matched with a guy on Bumble who had some cool hobbies and some of which overlapped with mine. We talked daily for almost 2 weeks before we met up in person and the guy was a very big charmer/woo-er. Like if I was messaging this kid I was constantly laughing and smiling

Tbh this was a lil bit of a red flag to me becauae I'm like: "no one is this charming. Something has gotta be up" & I legit came up with a few different scenarios. But I chose to shelf them because people do that to me all the time.

Like I'm just a really loving person and I will gas people up or go out of my way to make them happy if I can and people always want to try me like that can't truly be how/who I am or if I'm doing it it's because I'm trying to get at that person and they are always wrong. All the way from best friends to new acquaintances I really just like when people are happy. I mean the world's shitty already, if I can make your day easier or put smile on your face I'm game!

So we're on the phone one night (stayed up to 3 am sacrificing my sleep talking to this dude 🙄) talking more about who we are as people, what we're looking for in an ideal partner, etc. I told him straight up both via call and via message that honesty is really important to me. I value honesty with myself and also with others.

So also in this late night call things got a lil spicy 🌶 🌶 I was honest and told him that I'm pretty much a blank slate. Never fucked/sucked, etc or had anything like that done to me. He was taken aback like everyone I share this with is. Apparently I'm some sort of unicorn 🦄 out here in these streets to all y'all hoes. He makes a comment about stealing a kiss from me the next night and I said "I might allow it."

But the point is. I told him what it was. I was honest. That's my truth.

I didn't tell him that I'd never been on a date/kissed anyone because he didn't ask. Maybe if I would've said something, things would've been different. But I can't "what if" what's already happened y'all!

SO, day of. We messagin and snapping. I'm allll ready. We're going to a drive in and I'd never been to one before so I'm excited. I'm also just committed to making this a good time because I easily get distracted and often don't stop to take my experiences in to experience them fully. So I said not today!!

I got snacks. All of his favs and some of mine. I brought drinks and a blanket. I looked good.

Like I said in my pre-date post: I didn't have any lofty ideas about this dude being my soul mate or anything but I anticipated a good time.

He picked me up at our designated location. My sister met him and got his license plate; because apparently I had enough sense to realize I didn't know this nigga but not enough sense to later realize I didn't know this nigga.

It wasn't gonna take as long to get to the drive in as originally anticipated. So we went to a local park and sat in the car and talked because the park was PACKED and ya know RONA!

It was somewhat awkward because it was our first time talking face to face. But we found a groove and I'm extroverted af y'all. So, I can get people to have a conversation.

Topics range from our days, music and conspiracy theories which he's really into. What kind? Like: Shakespeare wrote the Bible is one. A lot of people that we know from media aren't really the original ones that we were introduced to is another. Ya know like that Beyoncé is not the real Beyoncé. There's two Trumps. There's two Hilary Clintons etc.

So at this point sensible me is like: this can be the point where you go home girl. You're 5 minutes away from your place. You can just say this ain't workin and cut it short.

OPTIMISTIC/BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT GIVIN/NAIVE SILLY ME IS LIKE: well, I 100% don't agree with anything you're saying just because you're saying it. But ya know, I don't know everything and I'm not in the business of judging people-especially since we just met and I don't want this human to feel uncomfortable. So, okay. I don't agree. But I won't judge. Let's just continue on.

But obviously I continued on and that's what I call mistake #1

So we're driving to the drive in. I'm realizing we're kind of different in ways. Most notable is that dude was raised Jehovah's Witnesses and celebrates 0 holidays & I'm in love with Halloween and at least birthdays.

We miss the drive in entrance due to my poor navi skills & he decides to smoke before we pull in. He offers it to me and I accept. This is mistake #2

Ya girl hasn't smoked in 6 years. I tried edibles recently. But that shit ain't the same. I really just feel like I said I wanted to be present and then I smoked and I was tired and everything was kind of dull?

So I'm high and sleepy but still a lil excited because it's my first drive in!! We get there and park and the drive in is really just a giant protection screen we all park in front of. Lmao. 😅 Idk what I was expectin but not that. But it was still cool. It's 10 and this movie still hasn't started because the last one is still showin credits.

Dude says he wants to chill in the back but he's going to the bathroom. I AM SLEEPY. THAT IS WHAT WEED DOES TO ME. Plus I was on the phone til 3 AM. So I'm like imma close my eyes before this thing starts since it's already late.

So while he goes to the bathroom I legit laid down in the back on a pillow because ya girl is a sleepy heaux 😴

He comes back and pits the pillow in his lap and is talking to me because this movie ain't started yet. My eyes are closed but I'm listening and everything and he's massaging my shoulders and whatnot. Eventually advertisements about common courtesy come on and what not. But that's not important and I don't move.

Soo he says something I'M ASSUMING IT WAS ABOUT THE KISS (I don't remember y'all. I'm about to skimp on some of these details because that high was really kickin in and I was feelin foggy.) But, I said "I would allow it." And he kissed me.

It honestly felt anticlimactic as fuck. Yeah my mind is kind of foggy because of the weed so I feel like I wasn't as fully cognizant as I would have been if I was sober minded. But also, it just happened

I'm in my head af. I've never done this and I'm sure I'm shit at it but I'm trying not to be ya know? Dude's tongue is in my mouth. His hand is under my romper.

So, I'm a roll with the punches kind of human and the rest of the film we pretty much are making out (lowkey meh), groping (I hate this word) & watching Deadpool ( for people who needed that detail)

As previously stated, all of this shit is new to me. But, I'm also not a "prude". I chose not to kiss/fuck anyone prior to this because it was what I wanted for a period of time. I couldn't do much in the date department because I was just not approached often or by people I wanted to entertain. But the opportunities for all that physical shit were presented and I chose not to just like I chose to engage in those activities on this date. I'm real big on not judging nor regretting those choices because those were what I wanted at one point and that's it. Soo if you got opinions about what I was out here doin, keep em to yaself.

We ended up making out and I feel like it was cool.. but just not great. We did other shit minus actual fucking. But it all just felt pretty muted to me. Not bad. Not uncomfortable. Just not great and I think in hindsight it was because I a) really didn't know and have an established connection with this dude and b) I was high.

He really wanted me to suck his dick and I was really hesitant to do that. Not even that much because I was checking off a lot of "firsts' or anything like that but because I swore I was gonna be shit at it due to 0 experience and that was what I told him. Like, I wanna be good at shit and also I would like if the person I was hooking up with was actually enjoying being with me ya know? Is that not a thing? But anyways, I did this and he says like nothing. He turns the car back on so we can still hear the movie & I'm pretty much like half watching the movie and talking to him like: "Soooo. I did that and I feel like I was right." To which he responds, "I've had worse," which is like ya know the compliment of the century and the most reassuring feedback you can give someone who is insecure about shit they've never done.

We still ended up making out and I gave him a handjob and finished the movie. I can't recall if it was at this point or when he drove me home but he basically implied that I was a liar and that is the shit that literally makes me wanna go back in time and tell former me to never say yes to a date with this nigga.

He gets to my place and we're talking now that we're parked and tells me that he thought I probably wasn't right about never having sex before. So, I'm real life hurt. I like to consider myself to be someone who has a good character and I am really big on honesty.

And I know for certain that his assumption was independent of any of my actions. He literally just told me so. He projected his insecurities onto me. We pretty much just ended up arguing about the night and he was doing it on purpose because he thinks it's sexy when women are mad. But when I get mad, I get done. If I let enough shit slide and you have the audacity to try and flip my script, I will fucking write you out of it.

Then I looked up at the time and realized I was sitting in this car arguing with nigga for at least 25 minutes. So I was just like: bitch, why are you still here?

I told him straight up that when I got out of that car he could forget about talking to me altogether and he was like: "I'll let you know when I make it home."

I told him he need not bother because apparently I'd finally gained some damn sense. I exited the car. He left. He hit me up when he made it home but I just deleted the app and removed him off of snap because I meant that shit.

TLDR; Went on my first date with a conspiracy theorist I matched with on Bumble and he told me I lied about my lack of sexual history.

Whee I can finally post this! My contribution to mxtxremix 2022. I remixed @ehyde​ ‘s threadfic Carrying you

This Version is slightly different from the one posted on AO3 because I made some minor fixes, I won’t replace the AO3 one though because idk if all those changes are actually for the better. It wasn’t an easy choice which work to remix but this one gave me immediately a concrete visual of what i wanted to do, and then I... uh messed up. See I mixed up the creator reveal date(13th march) with the submission deadline( 26th february)

Then I didn’t check my mails around the actual submission date due to stuff happening, so on March 1st I checked my mails mortified realising I missed not only the actual deadline but even the time window to get a 1-2 day extension. *clown-emoji* But hey reveal is on the 6th, and even if I defaulted I’m still allowed to submit something, just means my target gets 2 works so good fine.

6 days, we can do this? Right? I only had some barely legible written notes(If you can read this, congrats, because I can’t) and 1 key visual sketch for the 2nd and 3rd image. (I scrapped the other sketches)

So I did pretty much the entirety of this in 5 days. (Because I can’t do math and fortunately realised early enough that if the 6th is reveal day I need to post on the 5th)

I’m not gonna pretend I had most of it done and only had to finish it because doing all this in such a short stime is a nice flex and reminds me that when I do can focus I can get things done rather fast. Shoutout to my bro  @the-archangel-of-salt​ who was a big help for parallel working with me helping a lot to prevent me from just (mentally or physically) wandering off in the middle of to do something else and forgetting what I was doing.

I guess ultimately the time constraint was a good thing because it didn’t leave me time to waffle around and instead have to settle on a style that both fits the content but also is doable. 

So lines and flat colors it is. There’s been a bit back and forth on the panels since some looked too similar or weren’t interesting or didn’t go well with the way I wanted to place the text.

It was originally supposed to be divided into 4 A6 pages but due to the time limit I couldn’t match the panel sizes to fit that, so it’s just A6 width with lenght going for “whatever matches”

I guess we got some guests...

References are your friend, even if you end up ignoring most of them. (sshhh no you didn’t notice I mixed up the arms at one point)

I also lost one text panel so I had to frankenstein things in Indesign when placing the text so the comic file is now linked 4 times just to insert 2 additional simple black panels... oops

Fools were mentally disabled, more specifically, learning disabled, and many were jesters. This was because we say a lot of shocking things completely unprompted and they can be really funny.

Also, peopel with adhd are known to be very clumsy because an often accompanied with condition called sensory processing disorder. 

Also merlin is known to be really emotional but also bubbly and happy for seemingly no reason a short time later. That happens with adhd.

Merlin can’t sit still at dinner when he met freya because he was so happy. This may be Merlin doing something called stiming, or a self stimulation action.

I could go on and on about how adhd Merlin is. I’ve barely scratch the surface but I honestly cannot be bothered to type everything down right now lol

He consciously made his smile bigger than it usually was. He did that sometimes to make sure she saw he appreciated what she'd said. Their ways of showing emotion where very different after all.

Remus put his grubby gremlin hands on your shell "Can I look inside?" Before realizing it would be like asking to look inside someone's house and let go of your shell "Nevermind. You know what they say about monsters in horror movies! It's better if you don't see it so your brain can imagine the worst!"

When you explained the way you could carry out assassinations Remus somehow managed to get even more hyped. He happy stimed with his full body, flapping his arms while moving his head side to side.

"OHOHOHOHOH!!! That's so cool!!! And you could control how quickly the organs fill with goo!! You could make it a super slow agonising death!!! And it wouldn't leave any evidence!!"

He looked over to Janus with a big grin. They smiled back at him and moved their hand like they were stabbing someone. Their eyes met and they both let up into laughter like a silent joke had been said between them.

The moment suddenly stopped as Remus looked to the entrance "Hey shouldn't Remy have come back by now? Unless they're chainsmoking for the whole neighborhood"

"You're very right dear. I'm unsure if it's a good thing to leave them alone for a longer time right now with their....fragile..situation" Janus replied.

It took a second before Remus and Janus said at nearly the same time "I can go check on them!" "I'm willing to go talk to them"

They looked to each other before babbling out to each other that OH for sure the other could go talk to Remy. It didn't matter who. Yes for sure it was fine.

It was quite clear neither of them could decide who should go and none of the others thought they were close enough to Remy to go check up on them in the case something had happened.

I self project a lot into my oc’s so I tend to give them habits that I have/used to have & when writing them I will end up either picking that habit back up or have it happen more frequently (Ex, Decided that my OC Buck would knit, I ended up picking knitting back up, my OC Benny stims by shaking/flapping his hands, suddenly I started stiming like that more, my OC Cinnabon walks a certain way and I’ve noticed that I’ve started doing that strut walk thing when board.. ex)

Okay so the name “Benny” was a one hit name that I made for a background Crime Dude character that appeared once only to die, but then I developed that character a lil more,, and then some more,, and oh no now they’re the main character. So the name itself of me making him is really bland, literally just a “huh that sounds neat :)” but I do have story for his full name!! So they go from Benjamin Ophelia Bayheart -> Benjamin Oliver Bayheart-Fuchs

Last name wise, another on the spot name, middle name is his twin brother’s name! They got it changed when his brother changed his name :] And last name “addition” is because he got married,, kinda? It was a quick one off “aw fuck we gotta get married so a & b doesn’t happen” but thats long as hell so I wont get into it (sorry if your curious). The two (Benny & Sebastian Fuchs) had planed on getting married at SOME point but it just happened quicker so its good. And Fuchs is just a common German last name and Sebastian is German :)

Do any of your OCs contain any symbolism in themselves/their story?

Oh yeah! My favorite (wof one) being my Streetwing (fantribe) oc’s and their interactions with birds! The differing birds they interact with throughout their story will represent & show their loyalty’s, in the beginning there will be a lot of interaction with Crows & Ravens (the Streetwing Tribe representative Bird) and throughout the story they start to have interactions & notice of desert birds & common forest birds to show they are branching out and growing friendship with more tribes & dragons! I know you could just equate bird interaction to just environment but shh symbolism,,,

I also have a canon tribe Oc’s that have symbolism’s within themselves & story, my prime one being my Oc Buck (the knitting guy mentioned before) who has some fluff and he used to cut & shave it short a lot but as he becomes comfortable with himself & his environment & relationships he lets it grow out :) And then his sibling have a shit ton of wack symbolism but this is getting long !!

It’s a Whole Thing and I really love these characters but the story’s got little to no attention on Amino where I had originally posted and I dont want to clog everyone’s feed with writing they dont care about. Surprisingly no! I mean my sibling will make dumb jokes when watching shows like “hehe is that benny?” But they dont get compared to much. Ive had story elements compared to Shakespeare, not because I write like Shakespeare just because I steal his ideas sometimes :)

Which OC has been the hardest to develop/design so far?

*angrily shakes Benny and glares at him* This. Enby. Has been so damn hard to design. I’m not the best at humans but he’s just been hard for some reason, one of my longest story driven oc’s but they’ve only existed in my head for years and only got a design in the last year, very hard to design an Oc that you have a very clear image for but also Not At All. He’s easy as hell to develop though I’m well practiced in writing Benny now

OCs - Who the Hell is: Peterson "the Gargoyle"

(A short Original Character primer)

Universe Fighting Fantasy World of Titan

What does he look like? Peterson is a Drow and has the standard red eyes and white hair. However, he has a skin discolouration, making him grey/blue-skinned, rather than the standard black. He's thought to be middle-aged, making him around 170 years old, and at ~4'7" (140cm) and ~82lb (37kg) he was likely the runt of his litter.

What's he like? Peterson is an Illusion sorcerer with psychic abilities who keeps doves (essentially cross-classed as a Ranger) to run messages over the city. Peterson is a very nervous man and is easily frightened. This causes him to lash out, using his powers to drive people away. It's for this reason he lives a rather solitary life on the roof of a disused warehouse; this, and the colour of his skin, is responsible for his nickname of "the Gargoyle". He hates making eye contact (possibly an affection caused by the telepathy) and stimes by tapping his fingers together. He also appears to hate using his illusion skills for anything aside from keeping people away, and seems afraid someone will force him to use them for evil. He's a very soft boy, despite his powers. Really cares about his birds.

Who are the main people in his life?

As-yet-unnamed person – essentially a carer; someone who does his shopping, helps out when he's stressed. Possibly another mage, who taught him how to control his abilities.

Can you give us a highlight reel of his life?

Born in the Underdark to the traditional matriarchal society.

Unknown if his psychic abilities are learnt or inherent, but schooled in the art of finding a person's greatest fear using it against them.

Schooled in the art of illusion for the above same reason.

Used as a weapon to terrify/ main/ kill. Hated it. Was punished if he refused.

At some point escaped the Underdark. Possibly saw that there was a life outside of causing misery and fear via the mind of someone he was interrogating/ terrifying. Unknown how he escaped (ie with help or not).

Wound up in the Shambles area of re-built Torguard, and began squatting in the warehouse.

Bullied by a gang, accidentally killed them. Team Wiggy (aka O'Toreguarde and Breakwood) sent to investigate. Brought him into the Watch as a special consultant and got him better help to control his abilities/ a lore-friendly fantasy therapist.

Since then has been expanding his Ranger abilities, utilized by the Watch for his ability to have the doves do stake-out duty, got a better gig going with sending messages across the city via the birds.

What period of his life are you mostly writing about? As he's only appeared in one story, the very last bullet point above.

Who is he in real-world development terms? I was writing "Who Watches the Watchman" and he jumped into my brain as a convenient reason for the crew to have aerial surveillance. Then his nickname, backstory etc all sort of snowballed from there.

Need to figure out what is in a directory? ls is your friend. It will list out the contents of a directory and has a number of flags to help control how those items are displayed. Since the default ls doesn't display entries that begin with a ., you can use ls -a to make sure to include those entries as well.

2) cat

Need to output the contents of a file. Use cat! Bonus: use cat -n to include numbers on the lines.

3) less/more

Are finding that "cat-ing" a file is causing your terminal to scroll too fast? Use less to fix that problem. But wait, what about more? less is actually based on more. Early versions of more were unable to scroll backward through a file. In any case, less has a nice ability to scroll through the contents of a file or output with space/down/up/page keys. Use q to exit.

Need line numbers? use less -N

Need to search while in less? Use /wordshere to search.

Once you're searching use n to go to the next result, and N for the previous result.

Want to open up less with search already? Use less -pwordshere file.txt

Whitespace bothering you? less -s

Multiple files, what!? less file1.txt file2.txt

Next file is : and then hit n, previous file is : then hit p

Need to pipe some log output or the results of a curl? Use curl dev.to | less

Less has bookmarks? Yep. Drop a marker in less for the current top line with m then hit any letter as the bookmark like a. Then to go back, hit the '(apostrophe key) and the bookmark letter to return (in this case a).

Want to drop into your default editor from less right where you are currently at and return back when you're done? Use v and your default terminal editor will open up at the right spot. Then once you've quit/saved in that editor you will be right back where you were before. 😎 Awesome! 🎉

Curl is another essential tool if you need to do just about any type of protocol request. Here is a small fraction of ways you can interact with curl.

5) man

If you are stuck understanding what a command does, or need the documentation. Use man! It's literally the manual and it works on just all the built in commands. It even works on itself

6) alias

If you ever need to setup a short command name to execute a script or some complicated git command for instance, then use alias.

Bonus: add these to your ~/.bashrc to execute these when your shell starts up!

7) echo

The "hello world" of any terminal is echo. echo "hello world". You can include environment variables and even sub commands echo "Hello $USER".

8) sed

Sed is a "stream editor". This means we can do a number of different ways to read some input, modify it, and output it. Here's a few ways you can do that:

Text substitutions: echo 'Hello world!' | sed s/world/tom/

Selections: sed -n '1,4p' _bashrc (n is quiet or suppress unmatched lines, 1,4p is p print lines 1-4.

Multiple selections: sed -n -e '1,4p' -e '8-10p' _bashrc

Every X lines: sed -n 1~2p _bashrc (use ~ instead of , to denote every 2 lines (in this case 2)

Search all/replace all: sed s/world/tom/gp (g for global search, p is to print each match instance)

NOTE the sed implementation might differ depending on the system you are using. Keep this in mind that some flags might be unavailable. Take a look at the man sed for more info.

9) tar

If you need to create an archive of a number of files. Don't worry, you'll remember these flags soon enough!

-c create

-v verbose

-f file name

This would look like:

tar -cvf archive.tar files/

By default, tar will create an uncompressed archive unless you tell it to use a specific compression algorithm.

-z gzip (decent compression, reasonable speed) (.gz)

-j bzip2 (better compression, slower) (*.bz2)

tar -cvfz archive.tar.gz files/

Extraction is done with:

-x extract

Similar options for decompression options and verbose:

# extract, verbose, gzip decompress, filename tar -xvzf archive.tar.gz

10) cd

Change directories. Not much to it! cd ../../, cd ~ cd files/ cd $HOME

11) head

head [-n count | -c bytes] [file ...] head is a filter command that will display the first count (-c) lines or bytes (-b) of each of the specified files, or of the standard input if no files are specified. If count is omitted, it defaults to 10.

If more than a single file is specified, each file is preceded by a header consisting of the string ''==> XXX <=='' where XXX is the name of the file.

head -n 10 ~/dotfiles/_bashrc`

12) mkdir

mkdir creates the directories named as operands, in the order specified, using mode rwxrwxrwx (0777) as modified by the current umask. With the following modes:

-m mode: Set the file permission bits of the final directory created (mode can be in the format specified by chmod

-p Create intermediary directories as required (if not specified then the full path prefix must already exist)

-v Verbose when creating directories

13) rm

remove the non-directory type files specified on the command line. If permissions of the file do not permit writing, and standard input is terminal, user is prompted for confirmation.

A few options of rm can be quite useful:

-d remove directories as well as files

-r -R Remove the file hierarchy rooted in each file, this implies the -d option.

-i Request confirmation before attempting to remove each file

-f Remove files without prompting confirmation regardless of permissions. Do not display diagnostic messages if there are errors or it doesn't exist

-v verbose output

14) mv

mv renames the file named by the source to the destination path. mv also moves each file named by a source to the destination. Use the following options:

-f Do not prompt confirmation for overwriting

-i Cause mv to write a prompt to stderr before moving a file that would overwrite an existing file

-n Do not overwrite an existing file (overrides -i and -f)

-v verbose output

15) cp

copy the contents of the source to the target

-L sumbolic links are followed

-P Default is no symbolic links are followed

-R if source designates a directory, copy the directory and entire subtree (created directories have the same mode as the source directory, unmodified by the process umask)

16) ps

Display the header line, followed by lines containing information about all of your processes that have controlling terminals. Various options can be used to control what is displayed.

-A Display information about other users' processes

-a Display information about other users' processes as well as your own (skip any processes without controlling terminal)

-c Change command column to contain just exec name

-f Display uid, pid, parent pid, recent CPU, start time, tty, elapsed CPU, command. -u will display user name instead of uid.

-h Repeat header as often as necessary (one per page)

-p Display about processes which match specified process IDS (ps -p 8040)

-u Display belonging to the specified user (ps -u tom)

-r Sort by CPU usage

17) tail

Similar to head, tail will display the contents of a file or input starting at the given options:

tail -f /var/log/web.log Commonly used to not stop the output when the end of the file is reached, but wait for additional data to be appended. (Use -Fto follow when the file has been renamed or rotated)

tail -n 100 /var/log/web.log Number of lines

tail -r Input is displayed in reverse order

tail -b 100 Use number of bytes instead of lines

18) kill

Send a signal to the processes specified by the pid

Commonly used signals are among:

1 HUP (hang up) 2 INT (interrupt) 3 QUIT (quit) 6 ABRT (abort) 9 KILL (non-catchable, non-ignorable kill) 14 ALRM (alarm clock) 15 TERM (software termination signal)

You will typically see a kill -9 pid. Find out the process with ps or top!

19) top

Need some realtime display of the running processes? Use top for this!

20) and 21) chmod, chown

File permissions are likely a very typical issue you will run into. Judging from the number of results for "permission not allowed" and other variations, it would be very useful to understand these two commands when used in conjunction with one another.

When you list files out, the permission flags will denote things like:

-rwxrwxrwx

- denotes a file, while d denotes a directory. Each part of the next three character sets is the actual permissions. 1) file permissions of the owner, 2) file permissions of the group, 3) file permissions for others. r is read, w is write, x is execute.

Typically, chmod will be used with the numeric version of these permissions as follows:

0: No permission 1: Execute permission 2: Write permission 3: Write and execute permissions 4: Read permission 5: Read and execute permissions 6: Read and write permissions 7: Read, write and execute permissions

So if you wanted to give read/write/execute to owner, but only read permissions to the group and others it would be:

chmod 744 file.txt

With chown you can change the owner and the group of a file as such as chown $USER: file.txt (to change the user to your current user and to use the default group).

22) grep

Grep lets you search on any given input, selecting lines that match various patterns. Usually grep is used for simple patterns and basic regular expressions. egrep is typically used for extended regex.

If you specify the --color this will highlight the output. Combine with -n to include numbers.

grep --color -n "imgcat" ~/dotfiles/_bashrc 251:alias imgcat='~/dotfiles/imgcat.sh'

23) find

Recursively descend the directory tree for each path listed and evaluate an expression. Find has a lot of variations and options, but don't let that scare you. The most typical usage might be:

find . -name "*.c" -print print out files where the name ends with .c

find . \! -name "*.c" -print print out files where the name does not end in .c

find . -type f -name "test" -print print out only type files (no directories) that start with the name "test"

find . -name "*.c" -maxdepth 2 only descend 2 levels deep in the directories

24) ping

Among many network diagnostic tools from lsof to nc, you can't go wrong with ping. Ping simply sends ICMP request packets to network hosts. Many servers disable ICMP responses, but in any case, you can use it in a number of useful ways.

Specify a time-to-live with -T

Timeouts -t

-c Stop sending and receiving after count packets.

-s Specify the number of data bytes to send

25) sudo

This command is required if you want to do actions that require the root or superuser or another user as specified by the security policy.

sudo ls /usr/local/protected

Conclusion

There are a lot of really useful commands available. I simply could not list them all out here without doing them a disservice. I would add to this list a number of very important utilities like df, free, nc, lsof, and loads of other diagnostic commands. Not to mention, many of these commands actually deserve their own post!
