most of us have heard of the red car game. you’re on a road trip, you’re bored, you start looking for red cars to do something.
and then they’re everywhere. you notice them nearly every few minutes.
there aren’t suddenly more red cars now, of course. you were seeing them already, but you weren’t noticing. you weren’t looking.
I am noticing things.
there is a plant I notice everywhere now, a small bushy plant in suburbs, along streets, by shops on the highways. dwarf umbrella bush is what the internet tells me when I look for it’s name. I did this because I wanted to know why,
every time I ever saw it, every place,
it was always dying. always the leaves turning yellow, the branches small and scraggly. inside out - nitrogen deficiency. their soil drained.
I am noticing how many of these landscaping plants are yellowing, how small and sickly they look in just a few years. I am noticing how often the grass outside the house is replaced when it once again turns brown and dry, how the type never changes and the cycle starts again. I am noticing how the unmowed, unkempt spaces on lakesides and roadsides look more alive than this. how the preserve I grew up next to was miles of “messy” unmanicured nature and the ground was covered in leaves instead of grass and there was life.
I am noticing the birds that come by the lake. there was a flash of blue wings and red chest - eastern bluebird, male, relatively common. I had never seen one before. there is a family of ducks that appear every spring; i cannot say if it’s successive generations or different ducks, but I can always look forward to ducklings. there are little brown birds with white heads whose names I do not know - are they some kind of piper? why don’t I already know?
why is it so hard to learn about my native plants (accurately, that is)? why are so many gardening sites littered with people who think a plants value is based on how pretty or useful it is to them, who think a tree shedding leaves is “messy”?
why is knowing about the world we live in so… odd? why is it a hobby and not vital knowledge? I learned about polar equations. I taught myself about mycorrhizal networks and species of insects.
(did you know there are shiny green bees? a special species of wasp pollinating figs? that white flowers bloom at night for moths? do you know? have you looked?)
I cannot look at a lawn and see life anymore. it is a wasteland, devoid of life, dying slowly itself. everywhere is grass, grass, doused in water that runs over into storm drains, soaked in fertilizer and pesticides and a hundred other poisons and sending one clear message:
this is a place of death. life is not welcome here.
I do not think I could live in a city. too loud, yes, too busy, yes, too many people, yes, but the plants would bother me. a tree allotted only a convenient square, surrounded by dead stone and metal.
a forest cleared for this, for burning asphalt streets and racing cars and shops whose bathrooms are “for paying customers only”.
this is a place of death. life is not welcome here.
and now I am noticing.

it has always baffled me that ASL isn't taught as a second language in American schooling. or as a requirement for certain jobs that work with, well, people. the HLAA says that around 48 million Americans have hearing loss!! 1 in 5 teenagers!! 1 in 3 people over the age of 60!!! it's crazy to me that sign isn't more widely taught and used considering that you probably DO or WILL know someone who has hearing loss at some point in their life

I don't think the level of hate towards Daniel would reach the level of calling him Nepo baby. Just because a Christian likes him, f1tiktok is really pathetic.
The Daniel who had to wait tables at 17 to raise money for him to go to Europe? The Daniel whose parents managed to raise just enough funds to send him to Europe for a year and he knew he had to do everything to get spotted by Red Bull if he ever wanted to continue racing? The Daniel who didn’t get paid in his first year racing in F1 because Red Bull somehow had to get back their investment? The Daniel who got braces only after he got his first pay check in F1? That Daniel they’re calling a nepo baby??
They also forget even Christian who apparently likes Daniel so much, was unwilling to pay Daniel the same amount of money as a much younger less experienced Verstappen in 2018 until Dietrich Mateschitz put that offer on the table …

i love your art so very much - especially how you always accompany it with historical texts that inspired it, so i was wondering where do you find these texts...? and where would one even start if they wanted to learn more about niche roman history, i.e not just broad and generalized stuff you see in documentaries. i'd love to learn more as i fear my knowledge on roman history is very surface level.. thank you :)
honestly it's like. the usual research pipeline.
I go to the local library or scroll through their online catalogue on a subject and limit it to non fiction. jump to the references/bibliography section on wikipedia and jot down whatever seems interesting. sometimes it's like: biography on historical figure > take note of the footnotes and citations > start reading those texts > rinse and repeat
if it's a topic I'm extremely unfamiliar with (roman laws, probably) I'll look up '(subject) overview book' and start there (doing this usually gets me overview texts published by universities, which is what I want). every now and then, jstor search but just for book reviews and chapters. not because I'm interested in what the reviews say, but to make a list of books to scope out. I'll even do a jstor search with a couple of words thrown together just to see what'll happen.

I spent all of Draft One completely ignoring the uncomfortable situation I had going with 's vs s' when it comes to singular and plural nouns and my sudden inability to comprehend how they function. I kept going "No, don't get hung up on the issues, that's what editting is for, just get through the draft and leave the treasure hunting for later".
Guys. I'm having a fucking meltdown. There is no standard. There is no standard?! You're telling me I could say Ceres's or Ceres' and both are right? You're telling me it's supposed to be boss' but we all hate that so it's boss's? You're telling me that punctuation is actually just vibes and you can actually legally make it up as you go because it's all hocus pocus and nobody knows what they're talking about?
This is liberating, actually. I will be abusing this information.
Any other fun tidbits of English that we know about that seem made up? I'd like to know just how much I'm allowed too break this bastard language before it's actually a crime.

An Israel supporter just reblogged one of my posts🤢🤮 Immediate block.
I don't care if you like the same things as me, if you support Israel in any way shape or form you are a PSYCHOPATH, I can't breathe whenever I open Instagram or the Al Jazeera news because of the reminders that we share a planet with people who literally think murdering and r#ping children is collateral damage or self-defense or "just something that happens in war" NO IT DOESN'T, IT'S DELIBERATE. I am a Palestinian who's never been to Palestine because my grandparents were forced to leave their families and homeland.
"""Harbor no Hate""" I'm so sick of this Zionist talking point, shut up shut up shut up I HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO HATE BABY KILLERS AND THEIR SUPPORTERS

After seeing all these Orbo defense posts on tumblr circulating around, I’d thought maybe the clips I’d watched had been taken out of context.
And they were, but the context actually made him look worse.
Yes, Scarab should not be neglecting his other summons (or manhunting people, though I don’t think that’s what Orbo seems to take issue with) but…he is correct in that multidimensional fuckery is not. safe. Or at least, he’s had it drilled into his head that it’s not safe. Like being a god auditor is. His job.
When Scarab tells Orbo about Prismo’s unauthorized universe, Orbo’s response? “Prismo? Nah. That guy’s cool.” Immediately showing right off the bat that he will and does play favorites. If he’s able to pull Scarab from whatever universe he wants after being able to tell that he was neglecting his other calls, how is he NOT able to tell that Prismo created an entire unauthorized universe in the first place? And when he DOES find out, does he believe Scarab? No, because “Prismo’s cool and would never do that.”
And like. Scarab clearly knows he would react this way. Even if Scarab DOES have a vendetta against Prismo because he wanted to be wishmaster, he’s right (or has been taught by the same system that he is right) that an unauthorized universe without proper precautions IS DANGEROUS. But he knows Orbo wouldn’t believe him, so he wants to talk to the Upper boss. And Orbo physically prevents him from doing that. Which to me, reeks of a bad middle management who doesn’t want to get caught being bad at his job and playing favorites, so he keeps his employees from alerting someone in a higher position of power. He physically pulls Scarab into a different room and says “you can make your case to me.”
And when Scarab does “make his case” to Orbo, Orbo responds with. “Say goodbye to your legs.” Like. I do not fucking care actually if he was joking around or trying to be funny but I am of the opinion that it’s WILDLY inappropriate to threaten your employees in AMY situation, and scarab CLEARLY did not take it as a joke. And he really only stops when the upper boss DOES call, THEN he backs off.
And it doesn’t really matter whether Scarab “deserved” to be taken down a notch, because like. Orbo was STILL a bad boss and did it in ENTIRELY the wrong way and still chose to play favorites, AND it is, in fact, Scarab’s fucking job to deal with this kind of multiverse shit, which he points out, which Orbo has NO comeback to except to threaten his LEGS.
Also to me, Orbo reads like a boss who’s trying to be Cool and Relatable and is like “this isn’t just a workplace guys it’s a Family :)” which is the biggest red flag a boss could ever have.

sorry keep thinking about yunli and maybe getting too upset about how the fandom is treating her. y’all just hate autistic women huh. when alhaitham is blatantly autistic coded and outright rude to people it’s endearing but when yunli, a TEENAGER, does it, she’s just a brat????
autistic girls are held to such higher social standards. they aren’t allowed to be blunt or asocial or AUTISTIC. and i just. see a lot of that here.

Teaching in Gotham is hard
Teacher: Ok everyone, what do we wear in the summer?
Kindergartener: *raising hand enthusiastically* Snow pants!
Teacher: no dear. It doesn’t snow in the summer, it’s too hot!
Kid: but..It was snowing this summer for like 4 days!
Teacher: *thinking back how Me.Freeze tried to make an everlasting Winter in Gotham last Summer* well.. that was a special situation.
Another kid: *raising their hand* Gas masks!
Teacher: *Joker Gas and Fear Toxin always a threat and keeps a gas mask in her bag* umm that’s not mainly for summer though. You can have gas masks all year round.
Kid 3: oh! My mommy and daddy have gardening gloves and belts with weed killer stuff on it!
Teacher: Good! Lots of people do gardening in the summer! What do your parents grow?
Kid 3: oh they don’t grow anything. It’s for when those plants come alive and take over the city. There are vines and cool flowers all over the house! Mommy doesn’t like them though. So they need to get their tools to get rid of them
Teacher: *under her breath* god damnit Gotham.
