“So what made you finally decide to take an apprentice?”

“I wouldn’t say finally. I’m only three season-cycles old.”

Mistystar looks at her with a trace of sadness in her expression. The Great Journey changed things for the Clans forever. Willowshine was mentored by a practical kitten: Oakfern herself had started mentoring at less than a year old, Showerpaw died when Willowshine had just been born. She’s been the seer of RiverClan for a long time, even if this is only her third newleaf.

“You can wait, if you’re not ready.”

Willowshine wishes she could. Even if Oakkit didn’t want to be a seer — Willowshine has privately wondered if the names have any meaning — she owes it to her Clan. She might have had two seasons of training, instead of the standard year, but she’s learned a lot, and her paws are steady. She has the knowledge to pass on, and RiverClan deserves security. (The other Clans aren’t any better off. RiverClan has no one to lean on in a crisis.) “I’m ready,” she promises Mistystar. “Oakkit wants the position.”

“That doesn’t mean—”

“Mistystar,” Willowshine says, chuffing gently. “I’m ready, and Oakkit will be a good seer. It’s time.”

Her leader sighs. “Very well. When their apprentice ceremonies arrive, I’ll give him to you.”

not surprisingly, mudfur dies. runningnose and spottedleaf have a stand-off, he loses, and oakpaw becomes oakfern and moves to riverclan.

vixenleap dies.

duskfur becomes a warrior.

and since you might have missed it, to reiterate:

mudfur's been trying to retire for over a year. windclan's medicine cat dies, forcing him to give up his apprentice at the age of nearly 13. he dies the season after that, and a three season old cat from shadowclan becomes sole seer for riverclan. she then takes an apprentice, because the clans are reasonably terrified of losing another seer.

cedarkit and frecklekit die.

bristlewing dies.

mosspelt has five kits, conekit (white she-cat with patches of red-tipped fur, big paws, and hazel eyes), freckledkit (pale grey tom with dark flecks and a white chest), pinekit (she-cat with a white chest), sequoiakit (she-cat with dark paws and gold eyes), and willowkit.

silverstream (and greystripe) have one kit, beechkit.

shyheart and heavystep die. as a very old cat and a cat with kidney issues, respectively, both of them are vulnerable to poison.

mooseflame retires due to worsening health issues.

In doing math… Tadpolepaw, Mudfur, Showerpaw, and now Oakfern. That’s four RiverClan medicine cats to have died this round. And like. A lot of other medicine cats. Die really seems to hate medicine cats this round.

well...

fwiw, meddies spend two extra seasons as an apprentice, making their odds of death just that much higher, and medicine cats have a 1/20 chance of dying every season, instead of 1/25.

but there have been a LOT of deaths all at once, yes.
