"Garden of Cambrian Sights”

Innovatiocaris/Microdictyion/Haikouichthys/Eldonia/Fortiforceps

Cambrian, 518 million years ago, Maotianshan Shales (China) The Chengjiang Biota was composed of a hugely diverse array of invertebrates. Just in this picture alone, you have Innovatiocaris, Microdictyon, Fortiforceps, Eldonia, Haikouichthys, primitive annellids, priapulida, sponges, and echinoderms. It might not have always looked as helish as this, though... Based on the third panel of "The Garden of Earthly Delights" by Hieronymous Bosch.

Ghost Shrimp (Silly Guy)

Ghost Shrimp (Palaemonetes spp.)

This transparent crustacean belongs to the Palaemonidae family and is commonly found in coastal waters, estuaries, and even freshwater habitats worldwide.

Due to their see-through bodies, they blend almost perfectly into their environment, making them excellent at avoiding predators!

They are constantly digging and burrowing, which helps aerate the seafloor and keep ecosystems healthy.

As a prehistoric shrimp-thing, these guys are mostly exoskeleton, no chunk. I also couldn’t find anything on their slime or mucous secretion, which makes sense since we only have fossils to go off of. I’m left to assume that they were dry little guys. They min-maxed for maximum funk though. Look at this guy. What a creature.

Overall: 7/10

I don’t know a whole lot about fossils since I didn’t have a dinosaur phase. However, I do love a good Cambrian creechur. I want to pat its flat little head.

Wading Pool (11/23/24) - Dandy's World

Shrimpo stared at Shelly, head tilted slightly. "...You can't swim?" His gruff voice was surprisingly soft as he looked at her. Shelly nodded, rubbing the back of her neck as an embarrassed flush colored her face.

"Yeah..." She grinned at him sheepishly for a moment, before her gaze dipped down to the floor, the smile gone.. "I was worried I'd sink if I went in the water, so I never really learned..." Shelly looked back up at Shrimpo. "Guess we can't have that poolside date, huh?"

Shrimpo didn't respond, a light frown on his face. Shelly gave him a puzzled look.

"Shrimpo? What's the matt-" She squealed as Shrimpo stepped forward and picked her up. He broke into a jog, heading away from the pool. Shelly wrapped her arms around his neck, glancing up at him. "Where are we going?"

"Somewhere special." Shrimpo replied simply, his gaze meeting hers as he slowed and stopped, setting Shelly down. He extended a hand to her, a fierce blush coloring his face when she took it. "We can walk the rest of the way."

The pair walked the rest of the way in silence. Shelly gazed at her surroundings in quiet wonder, as the bright water and palm trees became muted sands and foliage.

"We're almost there, Shelly." Shrimpo spoke quietly, his gravelly voice almost reverent. "It's just over the hill." Shelly nodded, letting him lead her up the hillside path. The sun was setting, turning the sky a gorgeous pink.

As the pair reached the top of the hill, Shelly gasped. Nestled in the shallow dip of the land, was a small pool, surrounded by lush, verdant undergrowth and many small trees.

"It's beautiful..." She murmured, and glanced at him. "How long has it been here?" Shrimpo shrugged.

"Beats me," He replied as the pair made their way down the hill. "I just found this place looking for somewhere to practice my punches." Shelly glanced at the many trees surrounding the pool. All bore the marks of Shrimpo's practice.

"...I see." She stood by the water's edge, watching as Shrimpo waded through the water. He turned to look at Shelly, extending a hand.

"You comin'?" He asked, and a look of slight nervousness crossed her face. Shelly fiddled with the hem of her dress, staying where she was.

"How deep is the water?" Tentatively, she took Shrimpo's hand, allowing him to slowly lead into the water.

"Not that deep," He replied, taking her other hand. "You won't sink, I promise." Shelly smiled up at him, placing a kiss on his cheek.

"Thank you." She murmured, resting her head on his chest as Shrimpo blushed, before kissing Shelly on her forehead.
