Here's a little embroidery piece* vaguely inspired by the Hungarian Kalocsa style embroidery, and not so vaguely inspired by Dandelion from The Witcher books and the many ways his name has been translated.

We have Buttercups, of course, for Jaskier (Polish), Pasque flower for Kökörcsin (Hungarian), Larkspur for Rittersporn (German), Marigold for Marigold (Czech), and Dandelion (English). Also Cornflowers for his eyes 😅

*I only just started to learn the ins and outs of embroidery, so this has many issues, but I'm still kinda proud of it.

When translating Haku’s name it has that extra “ku” at the end (Hakuku). Is there any significance to it?

It’s just the way kanji works! Each kanji can have different pronunciations depending on the contexts they appear in. Specifically for names, there are characters that have different pronunciations when they are said as regular words (jōyō) and when they are said as part of names (jinmeiyō).

In Haku’s case, 伯 can be read as “haku” (jōyō), or just “ha” with other words e.g. when paired with 玖 “ku” (a jinmeiyō kanji). It can also be read as “osa” or “he” in other words!

Similarly, 玖 can also be read differently (“kyu”, “ki”, “tama” etc etc etc) depending on the context in which the kanji is read.

My theory is that 玖 might have been chosen to pair with 伯 since it comes from an older subset of kanji (go-on kanji, 呉音) that was derived from religious texts i.e., a nod to Haku’s character profile.

It can also be used either to refer to a type of jade or as an old way of writing 九 (9). I wouldn’t be surprised if we end up finding out way later in Season 4637352 that Haku is the first grandson in his generation (explaining the use of “伯” and explaining the high expectations placed on him to be an heir to the shrines, since kannushi positions are hereditary) or is part of the ninth/ninetieth generation of a shake family (explaining the use of “玖”).
