Unfiltered Thoughts While Reading: Fourth Wing
⚠️⚠️⚠️BEWARE OF A BEVY OF SPOILERS ⚠️⚠️⚠️
Chapter 1
I really like Mira so far - not too sure about their mom yet lol
Is Brennan REALLY dead? Lol Could be a page pulled from Red Queen
Their mom might have been Manon in an alternate universe
“Decide, Violet. Are you going to die a scribe? Or live as a rider?’”
I love the relationship between the two sisters
“He's the most exquisite man I've ever seen.”
I mean, Xaden does sound pretty hot. I’m a sucker for dark hair and dark eyes lol
“Flaming hot. Scorching hot. Gets-you-into-trouble-and-you-like-it level of hot.”
🤣🤣🤣
Nooooo! I had a feeling Dylan wouldn’t make it 😭
Chapter 2
Jack Barlowe - even his name sounds like a dick
Chapter 3
So there are four wings, with 3 sections in each wing, and 3 squads in each section making it 4 wings, 12 sections, and 36 squads total
“I will not die today”
Chapter 5
so Violets mom opposed General Melgren about the rebel children - wonder if they have animosity
Lol well Violets plan of getting Ri to ask her questions didn’t work 🤣
Damn, does her mom hate her? Why would she send Violet to do this??? Lol
Chapter 6
Aw, I really hope Brennan isnt actually dead and it’s a plot twist because he seems like a character I’d love
Chapter 7
It’s so strange that the people with the most motivation for revenge (rebel children) are put in such high power by training to become riders WITH MAGIC AND DRAGONS
Oh and look, a bunch of them are gathering to scheme even though it’s illegal for more than three to be seen together lol
Violet hanging out in a tree while passing judgement on this group is hilarious
“‘Fascinating. You look all frail and breakable, but you're really a violent little thing, aren't you?’”
Alright, I admit that I love their dynamic lol
Chapter 8
I’m surprised Dain didn’t see her rendezvous with Xaden since they touched and he can see memories
I wonder if the decrease in the number of dragons willing to bond speaks to the fact that the dragons’ don’t align with humans like before
Omggggg I hope Violet gets the black one! If dragons bond with humans like them, it would make sense because she’s so smart
Omg was the one and only rider of the black dragon Brennan?! The last time he was seen was five years ago which is when Brennan “died” and the teacher looked at Violet when he told the story of how the rider died
Oh I got it wrong, Brennan was the rider that was trying to be resurrected
Omg i totally thought it was Jack volunteering to spar Violet. I’m glad it’s Xaden instead hahaha
Chapter 9
Violence? I love the nickname haha
“Beautiful. Fucking. Asshole.”
🤣🤣🤣
Am I the only one getting hot and bothered by this death match? Lollll
“Defenseless women have never been my type.”
Okay sir 👀🥵
Man, I get Dain is her bestie but he is trying way too hard to get her out of the rider squadrant - just believe in her
Chapter 10
Theory time: the rider who died trying to save Brennan was his lover. He didn’t do it for fame, he did it because he loved Brennan. The black dragon is going to take Violet as his rider because of the special bond his rider had with her brother. BOOM
I already liked Ridoc before because I resonate with cracking jokes through hard times but now I like him even more and respect him
Violets squad: Sawyer, Pryor, Trina, Tynan, Rhiannon, Ridoc, Violet, Aurelie, and Luca
I hope everyone on this squad stays alive because I like them and their dynamic. I also hope Sawyer gets a dragon this year 😭
As I read the Gauntlet practice scenes, I just picture the final challenge on Wipe Out 🤣
Aurelie 😭😭😭
“Do not make me ask three times.”
👀 or what Zaddy?
“What makes you a rider is what you do after people die.”
Things I like about this book so far:
Female lead is not annoying. She’s very logical and the writer SHOWS that she’s smart instead of telling
The pacing is great. What a page turner! And the chapters aren’t impossibly long. The book is long but it doesn’t FEEL like it
The romance between the main ship is not cringe! They’re dynamic is hot. He’s hot. She’s hot. It’s all hot
There is more than one badass female characters! It’s giving Throne of Glass series (Aelin, Manon, Lysandra, etc)
Chapter 11
Does that mean someone will be punished for not burning Brennans things? Or does it not matter because Brennan is ALIVE?!
okay, so there’s a lot of representation in this book and I’m loving it (people of color, gay, they/them pronouns, etc)
I mean if Dain REALLY cared about her survival, he’d help more! He would have watched her practices and given her ideas on how to make it - not continue to try to get her to quit!
Violet is a fucking badass. LETSGOOOO
I also love how shameless her mind is when describing how sexy Xaden is lol
Also, I notice that Dain isn’t mentioned AT ALL during this whole thing about her making it through the gauntlet. Shouldnt he have been there also defending her win???? Sus
Chapter 12
Ahhh there’s a Feathertail? Maybe THATS the one that she bonds with since they abhore violence and are smart (sounds like Violet)
OR the Feathertail will report back to the black dragon about Violet and he comes during the Threshing 👀
Damn these dragons are heartless! Poor Pryor. But also, humans are heartless - Tynan and Luca can jump off a cliff
I hope that the awesome conversation Violet and Rhi are having throughout this walk means they’ll get awesome dragons
OMG finally someone I dislike diess LOL freaking Luca. Bye Felicia
Chapter 13
Hmmm, if Violet hasn’t felt a connection with the feather one so far then I don’t think they’ll bond. Maybe she hasn’t felt a connection because the black dragon wasn’t on the walk and Tynan will bond with that gold one to teach him a lesson about strength?
I wish Tynan also got burned to a crisp during presentation
Threshing is giving me “Manon and the Thirteen must fight others for Wyverns” vibes
Okay, maybe the gold dragon IS her dragon lol
I’m proud of Violet for coming to the Gold dragons defense but I’m relieved that Xaden was there with his dragon hahaha
Chapter 14
I FUCKING KNEW IT! It’s the black dragon! Here to claim Violet!!! Fuck yes!!
This fucking dragon is hilarious. I love him already
“"My name is Tairneanach, son of Murtcuideam and Fiaclanfuil, descended from the cunning Dubhmadinn line."
Tairn, this dragon is so sassy hahahaha
SHE FALLS OFF?!
Chapter 15
“You’re making us look bad. Stop it.”
I’m ded hahahah this dragon 🤣 He reminds me of Venom in the Venom movie with Tom Hardy lol
“Was everyone’s dragon a curmudgeon? Or just mine?”
💀💀💀💀
“"You are the smartest of your year. The most cunning. You defended the smallest with ferocity. And strength of courage is more important than physical strength.”
❤️❤️❤️
SHE FUCKING BONDED WITH BOTH?!
What. A. Legend.
Chapter 16
Damn, even the head dragon isn’t a huge fan of this? Now I’m concerned because General Melgren is obviously a bad guy lol
I’m so glad Sawyer got bonded this time around! And Rhi and Ridoc are bonded!!! Yay!
Poor Trina
Tairn told you to stay with Xaden and you’re not LISTENING!
Oh I didn’t see the dragons bond coming!!!
Damn Dain, that’s cold. But I knew it - he’s no real ride or die bestie!!!
I really do like Violet but her undying faith in Dain is pissing me off
Strange how Dain kisses her after all this time only because she has TWO bonded dragons 😒
Chapter 17
But if you really think about it, Violet didn’t take any available dragons away from others - Tairn hasn’t been seen in five years and Goldie was unwanted and a surprise at presentation
“Your puny gods”
lol I love Tairn
Chapter 18
Yes! Finally Violet sticks it to Dain. I’m tired of his shit too
Omggggg poor Jeremiah. That was brutal
the golden dragon can freeze time?! What a badass power!
chapter 19
Dang, Xadens rejection to Violet had ME in my feelings - what do you mean you wouldn’t sleep with her to keep her safe?!
Omg Andarna is adorable - she better not die EVER
Ohhhhh, a Feathertail is a baby dragon?
I bet it was Imogen who opened the door for those people to kill Violet
Chapter 20
Based on the intro of this chapter, now I’m thinking it was Amber because she’s the only female wing leader I can recall
Yep, it was Amber!
Also, I love their squads banter and camaraderie lol
Fucking Dain - you’re the worst
I’m glad they were able to show undeniable truth since SOMEONE refused to believe her 😒
Chapter 21
I love that there’s even more representation in here with the hearing impaired scribe
Liam sounds hot lol
Something sus is happening with this war
Chapter 22
I’d be staring too 👀
So our boy Jack is allergic to oranges hmmm? Funny how a guy that talks so much shit can be killed by produce. Just saying
Okay now I’ve reached the “when will they get it on?!” Point lol
Xaden is just giving out hot compliments left and right 🥵
FINALLY! It only took two dragons fucking for Violet and Xaden to finally give in lol
Nooooooo! Damn Xaden for thinking straight lol
Chapter 23
I see what Rhiannon is hinting at - that Xaden is only the most powerful rider in their generation for NOW because it was before Violet got here lol Gotta love that bestie support!
Man Dain really needs to step up - he’s giving Tamlin vibes right now
I knew Jack was allergic to oranges! I hope he’s dead!
Chapter 24
Damn, still alive
A guy burned himself alive with his own power?! Man, this squadrant is insane and brutal
Violet’s mom is cold as ice
Chapter 25
the most valuable thing would be intel! They should think like a Scribe, like Violet
Liam and I are on the same page!
Break into the Commander’s office?! This could go horribly wrong! What if they see stuff they’re not supposed to?!
“‘Scribes freak me out. Quiet little know-it-alls, acting like they can make or break someone by writing something down.’”
🤣🤣🤣
Alright, pretty badass plan
Chapter 26
Mira!!! I’m so glad they got to see each other and that Rhi got to see her family 🥰
Omg mated dragons can only be a part for three days?!
It’s strange that earlier in the book they made it seem like Tairn hasn’t been seen for five years but if he’s mates to the blue dragon, wouldn’t he be seen wherever Xaden is?
Chapter 28
I love how intense and dangerous Tairn is one minute and super cheeky the next haha
FINALLY JACK IS DEAD! Fuck that guy!
And yessssss, Lightening Wielder sounds badass!
Chapter 29
I swear if Andarna dies in this series, I’m going to RIOT. She’s so pure and wonderful 🥹
“Get the fuck away from her with that nonsense.”
Xaden does not mince words and I love it haha
Xaden and Tairn’s pep talk to Violet is way better than Dain’s
I mean she has a point about her powers. They’re badass but yeah, pretty destructive lol
Chapter 30
Well this escalated quickly 👀🥵
Pretty awesome that dudes take contraception lol
Xaden is responsible for all the rebel children?! Omg I bet it was her mom that gave him those scars! That’s what he meant when they ran into the commander previously
I’m not a fan of when the male lead says “Don’t fall for me” like bro, it’s too late - I’m invested haha
This training session with Carr is hilarious lol
I think I like professor Carr more now
Chapter 31
I’m pleasantly surprised she comes right out and says “yeah I’m probably going to fall for you if we keep this up” lollll most characters in this position stay in denial until it backfires lol
“He really does have an incredible body, but he doesn't get to dictate what I do with my heart.”
Preach girl
I’m living for all of page 393 - you go Violet!
Damn, I really like Violet lol
Chapter 32
🔥🔥🔥
Cheaper 33
Phew, thank goodness it was a fake drill!
Hmmmm, something tells me this fake war is about to get real
Omg why is Andarna so adorable?! Tairn will carry her like a human dad carrying his baby in a bjorn lol
Idk that “I’ll miss you, Violet.” from Dain was a little SUS. He was way too quick to make amends with her decision. Something fishy is going on
Xaden and the other rebel kids in the fourth wing are also acting sus. Like they know more about this scenario than they’re letting on. Why are they all so tense if it’s just a game? Why did Dain’s dad give Xaden a weird look?
Chapter 34
did the Gryphons start attacking after unification because Navarre took something from them and made it harder for the Gryphons to get it back after unifying nations?
Ah! I had a feeling the Gryphons and their riders weren’t so savage as the Navarre historians and leaders want people to believe!
Chapter 35
Okay, we can recover from this Violet! Sure everyone including your two bonded dragons and the love of your life lied to you over and over BUT it must have been for a good reason. I’d give them the benefit of the doubt over Dain and the others any day
Okay Violet really believing Dain would break rules to save people is ludicrous. I like Violet but her thinking on this is stupid
Theory time - Violets mom killed their dad because he was in the know about venin and ready to go public
Another theory - Dain and his dad have known about venin this whole time. Dain’s being used to help continue to cover it up. He’s also been lying to her technically as much as Xaden has been
I fucking knew it! Dain has been reading her memories this whole time! Duh girl!!!
The real question is if more than just Dain and his dad concocted this plan to kill Xaden
If Xaden dies, there’s a chance Violet would die because of their dragon bond so wouldn’t her mom know that? But would she even care? Or mayb her mom is like The Hound from the crescent city series
Chapter 36
“We’re riders. We defend the defenseless. It’s what we do.”
Damn, so General Melgren can’t see the fate of people with rebellion relics? Good
The level of stress I have reading these last 80ish pages is HIGH
I don’t want anyone in this riot to die! Or the Gryphons and their riders!
maybe her mom knew she’d survive because of what general Melgren can see? Which might explain why she was fine with making Violet become a rider
Whyyyy would you say “we actually might survive this”?!?! Now people will die!
“It’s been. My honor.”
I am unwell
😭😭😭 Liam
Chapter 37
So many emotions rn fucking hell
Chapter 38
Omg if they are going where I think they’re going I’m going to be shooketh ARE THEY TAKING HER TO BRENNAN?!
Another theory - the reason why the number of dragons willing to bond is decreasing, is because more dragons are bonding with the rebels and not the Navarre military
Violet is annoying me with her thoughts about Xaden right now though. Girl, you saw and fought that evil and you still mad that Xaden didn’t bring you in sooner?! Get over it and live lol
The person Xaden is asking to save her HAS to be Brennan - he was a mender
Chapter 39
we’re getting a Xaden chapter?! Is this the end?!
Something doesn’t feel right - did she lose her memories? Why is she being so nice to Xaden right away? Sus
Oh good her memory is back! I was about to be pissed if all of book 2 was her trying to recall book 1 lol
What happened to Xaden’s mom?! Sounds like another storyline 👀
Andaran became full grown?! Can wait to hear what she looks like and her special power
BRENNAN I FUCKING KNEW IT!!!!
Well if Violet didnt trust Xaden before, she definitely won’t now! Keep a dead brother secret seems pretty big lol
I wonder what Tairn thinks of Brennan since his rider died saving him
also, I’d be low key pissed at my sibling! I wonder if Mira knows about Brennan. I assume not - maybe he thinks she’s too much like their mom?

I don't mean this in any jokey or disrespectful way; is there any truth to the alchemy in say, the Full Metal Alchemist anime? The symbols or transmutation circles?
Actually the author of FMA did a ton of research into historical western alchemy. The whole law of equivalent exchange is a real alchemical concept from hermetica, and one that sir Issac Newton expounded into the law of thermodynamics.
The elrics dad, Van Hoenhiem, is based on a real alchemist named Phillipus Aurelious Theophrastus Bombastus Von Hoenhiem. At one point Pride even references the real alchemists name.
Basically everything about alchemy in FMA is taken from primary sources, down to the symbology of transmutation circles to the color scheme of Edwards design.

The Stylist
Tup makes a new friend in a small village! Word Count: 676 Warnings: typical war stuff mentions
_________________________________
Captain Rex sighs at the sight of the children of the village they had recently liberated."They all will need to be evacuated soon." he turns to Jesse who nods. "Send a message back to the base, let them know we will be needing a civilian transport." He tries not to notice how hungry, tired, and afraid they looked as these new strangers came into their home, trust nonexistent from the treatment of the last visitors that occupied their town."I can't believe the Separatists have sunk this low." he murmurs, turning around and walking toward the rest of the troopers.
"Sir everyone is accounted for I believe." Jesse says, taking a quick count as the men line up loosely. "Minimal loss but.. there is quite a bit of damage done to the surrounding area."
"Wait where is Tup at?" Kix interrupts, looking around. "He was just here a few minutes ago."
Rex sighs, rubbing his temple. "I don't know but somebody go find him. He and Fives can take on the civilian transport detail. We need to get those kids out of here before the next wave of attacks happen." he nods his head over to the huddled residents."I need a moment to talk to the general."
"On it sir!"
Fives made his way around the half collapsed buildings nearby, peering into them and around the groups of men. "Hey! Have you seem Tup?" he asks a familiar group of troopers." The Captain needs him for something." A few of them shrug, but one answers immediately. "Yeah last time I saw him he was over there!" He said, pointing to a few crates. "Where that little girl is sitting."
Fives gives a quick thanks and makes his way over to the crates, hearing small giggles come from the little girl and a familiar voice coming from on the ground in front of her.
"You are much better than some of my brothers with this." Tup's voice said and the girl laughed. "I mean, a few of them are gentle enough. But none of them ever take the time to braid it so nicely! And with flowers. I am one lucky trooper. Good thing I had you here to rescue me from a bad hair day." This time he joins in with the girls laughter.
Fives shakes his head as he walks up to the pair. "Tup! What are you doing the Captain needs you!" He looks down at the other trooper kneeling on the ground as the little girl happily hums, combing through his hair with her fingers. "Who is your little friend here?" He asks, giving her his most charming smile.
"This here is Aurelie!" Tup says, trying not to move his head as she finishes weaving the flower through another braid. "She is one of the children from here in the village. I was trying to fix my hair when my headband snapped and I found her here hiding. She is still a bit scared you see. But, this brave girl here came to save the day with her braiding skills! Now I won't need a tie until we get back to base." he says, giving Aurelie a wink. "All done? Good!" He stands up and dusts himself off. "Thank you so much." The girl responds with another laugh and beams at her work.
Fives nods his head. "Yeah! Much better than the time you let me try to help." He grimaces, remember the tangled knots and hours of work it took to fix his handiwork. "But we better get going! Captain wants us to help with the civilian transport loading. Your little friend here and her neighbors need to be taken somewhere safe."
Tup stretches, and turns his back to the little girl. "Alright Aurelie! Ya wanna come with us? Hop onto the transport!" The little girl stands up and hops on the troopers back, laughing and waving at a nearby group of troopers. "Hey but watch the hair!" He teases, adjusting her and following Fives. "My personal stylist worked really hard on that!"

FICTOBER 2021 - Day 26
Prompt number: 26 - I'm sure this has never worked, ever. Original fiction: Upon her Cable Rating: G Warnings: n/a
Aurelie led Annabelle into her sleeping quarters. Anabelle scanned the room with curious eyes before Aurelie invited her to sit on the bed.
The two women looked at one another for a few seconds. Annabelle’s eyes started glistening again and Aurelie gave a sad smile.
“Why are you crying again?” she said.
Annabelle shook her head, “I thought you had died. Did any others…”
Aurelie looked sadly at her lap and tightly wrung her fingers. “No other survivors. I walked the island for three days, miserable. I knew no one was coming to help me so I was ready to die.”
“Then what happened?” Annabelle asked. “How did you get off that island?”
“These…” She weighed her words. “These sailors found me on the island. They helped me leave the island on their ship.”
“They were willing to help you… to help a sl… a servant.”
“They somewhat made a deal with me; asked me to work on the ship in exchange for food and shelter.” She purposefully left out the events that happened in Havana.
Annabelle stood up and examined the room again, taking a few paces back and forth. “So, you live here?”
Aurelie nodded.
“On this filthy ship with those filthy men? I won’t allow it!”
“Annabelle, please. I have little choice. You know the alternative.” Aurelie stood up and took Anabelle’s hands. “What about you? How did you end up here? Are your mother and father here?”
Annabelle sadly shook her head and wrapped her arms around herself. “They took them away and locked them in a cellar. I don’t know what they will do to them.”
“But you’re now the Governor’s daughter. Can’t you demand they set them free?”
“I’m sure that has never worked… ever.” She walked back and sat on the bed again. “I managed to escape, but I had to hide my identity. Working at the inn allowed me to earn money.” After a slight pause, she looked at Aurelie and asked. “What were those sailors doing on the island?”
Aurelie opened her mouth to answer but was interrupted by a knock on the door. William opened it without waiting for an answer. “Captain,” Aurelie said, acknowledging him.
“You brought a friend.”
Annabelle smiled and addressed him as well. “Captain, sir. I want to tell you how incredibly thankful I am for taking care of my friend.”
The captain smiled and bowed his head to accept the appreciation.
“I will be taking her with me now.”
Shocked, but also sad, Aurelie looked at her friend. She didn’t want to protest, but she also wasn’t in a hurry to leave. She may have had hostility at first, but she has gotten used to this life.
William looked at Annabelle, then back at Aurelie. “Is this what you want?”
Aurelie looked at Annabelle and frowned. “This is my home now. Here I’m not a slave or a servant. I am part of the crew. I have no desire to go back.”
Annabelle took her hands and smiled. “Alright.” She then looked at the captain. “I’m going with you.”
“Annabelle!” Aurelie exclaimed.
“Wherever she goes, I go.” She sensed the tension between Aurelie and William as soon as he walked in and knew he wouldn’t refuse; not for Aurelie’s sake.
“Well then,” the captain said, “I guess I have no other choice.”

Boston Boys [Part Sixteen]
Summary: John and Aurelie make amends; Sebastian has reason to be suspicious of Scarlett. Pairing: Chris Evans x OFC, John Krasinski x OFC Word Count: 1867 Chapter Warnings: Discussion of criminal activity including murder ... I think that’s it? A/N: This story contains a character who lost her hearing as she got older. I do work closely and regularly with the D/deaf community (I’m a sign language interpreter), but my own hearing problems do not involve significant hearing loss. It is not my intention to offend anyone, only to bring in a character with a quality I don’t see often in other fics. If you have questions about her, feel free to ask :)
Additionally, I have decided to attempt to post a chapter a day until we get to the end of this bad boy. Since the fic is completed, it’s just a matter of me getting off my butt and putting the posts together!

The rain was coming down hard when John got home from closing the bar. John ran for the front door, unlocked it and got inside before he could get any more drenched than he already was.
He took a warm shower and put on a pair of thin sweats and a plain white t-shirt. A beer and sports highlights sounded good before bed, so he popped the top off a glass bottle and tuned in to ESPN. The announcer only got through the highlights of one game before John’s doorbell rang.
John muted the television and reached for the handgun hidden under the coffee table. He kept it behind him as he looked out the peephole, but tossed it back to the couch when he saw Aurelie on his porch. He flung the door open and pulled her inside.
“Are you crazy? It’s pouring out there!” he scolded.
She sniffled and looked up at him. Her eyes were red and her face was splotchy -- a sure sign she had spent a fair amount of time crying. Shaking her head, she apologized for showing up at this hour.
“I took my implant off because of the rain so I only caught some of what you said,” Aurelie admitted. “Anyway. I’m sorry about our fight the other day -- it was my fault.”
John shook his head. “No, Aurelie --”
“Robbie Evans killed my dad,” Aurelie blurted out. “The detectives tried to tell me when they came back to question me that day, and today I mentioned it to Chris. He knew this whole time. This whole time! He’s been the only person I trusted and he’s been bringing me money from Robbie and I thought it was because Robbie has thought all this time my deafness was his fault -- but now to find out -- Chris is all I have left and now I don’t even have him!”
She broke down then, holding her face in her hands and crying silently. John came forward and pulled her to him. He let her cry it out until she stepped back and apologized again, this time for coming at all.
“Don’t apologize,” he said, speaking the words clearly and signing as best he could. “You’ve got me. Maybe you don’t have Chris, but you’ve got me. I love you, kid.”
“I love you too, Johnny,” Aurelie said, managing a sad smile.
He helped her to his room and into one of his t-shirts. He changed into a fresh pair of pajamas, then they sat together on the couch, watching the sports highlights until John finished his beer. Then, he shut the house down while Aurelie waited for him in bed.
“Are you still mad at me?” she asked.
John sighed. “I was never mad at you. I was mad at myself. You deserve better than what I can give you. You deserve normal.”
“Normal’s just a setting on the washing machine,” Aurelie shrugged. “That’s what my mentor used to say, anyway. This is our normal, and I wouldn’t want anything else if it meant not having you.”
John smiled and kissed her softly, made sure she was tucked in and comfortable, then switched off the bedroom light and joined her in the bed.
Candles were lit on the table, a vase was full of her favorite flowers, and quiet music set the mood just right. Scarlett adjusted her dress as she followed Sebastian to the table where he pulled out her chair.
“My lady,” he smiled.
Scarlett smiled, too. “Well, sir, you’re quite the gentleman. This place is amazing … what’s the occasion?”
Sebastian ordered a bottle of wine for them, then turned to his date. “I got the all-clear from the doctor today. I’m completely healed from the gunshot wound. Felt like celebrating and there’s no one else I’d rather celebrate with.”
Scarlett giggled; she never giggled. Being with Seb, though, made her feel like she could be whoever she wanted to be, express herself however she felt fit the situation. She didn’t hold back with him. It was refreshing, to be honest.
“Everything looks amazing,” she sighed, looking over the menu.
“It does,” Seb agreed.
They discussed different options until they each settled on what sounded best to them. A very stately looking waiter came to take their order, then they were able to only concentrate on each other. They made small talk, voiced their observations about other people and couples in the restaurant, and when their food came, they got right down to eating, trading bites here and there. Sebastian ordered a second bottle of wine, which they made short work of.
The waiter came to clear their plates, and Scarlett excused herself to the ladies’ room. Sebastian paid the bill and fished around in his pockets for a toothpick -- then took another look around the restaurant and decided maybe a classy place like this wasn’t the place for a toothpick. The vibration of a phone caught his attention, but once he realized it wasn’t his, he let it go. Scarlett should be back soon, he would let her know that she had missed a call.
But then the phone rang again. Risking a very rare kind of rage that only Scarlett could dole out, he reached into her purse to get the device. The phone that he pulled out wasn’t the phone she normally carried with her, and the number wasn’t one that Sebastian recognized. Though he considered answering the call, he thought better of it and dropped the device back into Scarlett’s purse just before she returned from the ladies’ room -- and set the phone she normally carried on the table.
“Did I miss anything exciting?” she smiled at him, sipping at what was left of the wine in her glass.
“No, sweetheart,” Seb smirked, leaning over the table to place a soft kiss on her lips, “nothing at all.”
Elsa wasn’t sure what to do. Chris had texted her that he would be late for dinner because he was meeting Aurelie, but that was the last she had heard from him -- and that had been hours ago. Two text messages and a phone call to Chris went unanswered.
I’m really starting to get worried, Chris. At least let me know you’re okay.
The reply came a few minutes later. I’m fine.
That was it. No explanation. She wanted to ask him if he was still coming over, but the tone of the situation told her that maybe it was better to back off. Chris had given her Aurelie’s number for emergencies, so Elsa typed out a text to her but then deleted it without sending. She wasn’t in high school anymore, she wasn’t going to get Chris’s sister involved in their drama, no matter how small. She couldn’t call Brie to talk through the situation with her -- those two hadn’t spoken since their fallout in the Manhattan night club. Elsa really didn't want to hear any version of I told you so, from Brie or her mother or anyone else, so calling New York was out of the question, too.
Feeling defeated and pretty low, Elsa packaged up the meal she had cooked for herself and Chris without eating any of it. She loaded and ran the dishwasher, then went to start a bubble bath for herself. While the water ran, she wiped off her makeup, piled her hair on her head, and turned on a quiet playlist. Add in a glass of wine and by the time the tub was full, Elsa was ready to step in and forget about her hurt feelings and ruined night.
Seb had dropped Scarlett off at home and was returning to his apartment when Chris pulled up with a twelve pack. Seb chuckled.
“It’s like you read my mind, man,” he said, greeting Chris with a playful punch on the shoulder. “Just dropped Scar off, I’m ready to get out of this monkey suit and get a little fucked up.”
Chris nodded. “Yeah, I just stood Elsa up. Feel bad, but not bad enough to go over there, I guess.”
“What’s goin’ on? I thought you really liked her?”
Licking his lips, Chris nodded up to the apartment. It was better not to talk about any of this where anyone else could be listening.
Once Seb had changed and the television was on for background noise, they each popped open a beer bottle, toasted to girl troubles, and knocked back a few gulps a piece.
“The cops talked to Aurelie about me the other day,” Chris sighed. “They mentioned something about Robbie killing her dad. She wasn’t flat out asking, but -- shit, if you could have seen the way she was talking about it. She’s got too much faith in me. A piece of shit from a bad part of Boston. So, I told her the truth.”
Seb’s eyes went wide. “Fuck, Chris. Thought you were taking that one to the grave. I mean, you told me, but I never expected you to come clean to anyone else.”
“Yeah, neither did I. Aurelie’s a good person. She deserved better than to ever be dragged into this bullshit with my family. I shoulda protected her like I do Carly and Shanna. Shoulda kept my mouth shut all along.”
“You could have tried, but Aurelie’s too smart for that.”
Chris finished off that first beer and reached for another one. “Anyway. I’m probably no good for Elsa, either. I gotta break that off, soon.”
Seb leaned back against the couch. “Yeah, I’m not sure Scarlett and I are going to last much longer. She’s hiding things from me -- she might be hiding things from all of us.”
“What do you mean?”
Seb took a good, deep breath, measuring his words out carefully. He could look into the matter on his own, but his feelings for Scarlett could potentially interfere. He finished off the beer in his hand and got up to find a whiskey bottle, taking a good swig before returning to the living room.
“Can you think of any reason why Scarlett would have two phones?”
“Two phones? Scarlett’s got two phones?”
Seb recounted what had happened at dinner while Scarlett was in the ladies’ room. “Had to make a lot of excuses not to go home with her or have her come here after we paid the bill. I love that woman, and I want to trust her. Thing is though, between the two phones and the times no one seems to know where she is, I’m not sure any of us can trust her.”
Chris nodded; he could see where Sebastian was coming from. He was just as concerned, and felt like an idiot for being so caught up in Elsa and his own shit that he had neglected his responsibilities to his family. Just because he didn’t want to take any referrals, just because he wanted a normal life for a while. Now, the foundation they all rested on was potentially beginning to crumble.
“All right. Clearly we need some answers. You up for starting tonight?” Chris asked.
Seb took another couple pulls from the whiskey bottle and capped it. “Sure. Finish off that beer, then we’ll go.”

Uninspiring (12/1/2019)
First of December, 39.
I awoke again last night in a pained frenzy, face cold sweat and dagger drawn from under my pillow. I do not remember the dream or event that caused me to react so harshly, but given the tingling in my left arm, it could have been Durnholde again. Thankfully, I did not wake any of my comrades in the NCO bunks: it would have been hard to explain how I broke composure in my sleep, given my usual flat facial features and voice. I should consider finding a small cottage near the Garrison. Should this continue, I do not want to concern or wake my comrades. I’ll think of an excuse about alchemical experiments or wanting to start up an agricultural project. Something to keep the facade.
Though unrelated to this episode, I find myself thinking on Thaddeus’ words, and what he said to me. It was a passing statement, intended to strike under my defenses, but it had more of an effect than I think he intended. “Your comrades do not find inspiration from you”, or something similar to that theme. At first, it was a cerebral reaction of anger from his statement, but it became something more cruel, and self-imposed.
Everywhere within the Regiment, I find inspiration from my fellow soldiers and comrades. It feels foolish that I would even need to name them, but they feel as numerous as the number of the Regiment itself. Sir Valrik, a burning beacon of stoicism and holy virtues that heartens any soldier in his vicinity. Thaddeus and Potter: though charismatic and powerful as individuals themselves, together they have an almost intangible force of will that bolsters any line or activity. Dame Alison, a social powerhouse who can direct the winds of conversation and direct the movements of others as easily as a flick of her wrist. Even those of my same rank show great spirit, and quickly surpass me in all things. Samuel Cooper: a sturdy soldier with a repertoire of working hard. Pridion Greycliff, ever the butt of jokes for a time, has flourished and matured into his position as both an Inquisitor and Quartermaster with ease.
Sergeant Gromley, Wizard Witherseed, Sergeant Aubron, Sir Roy, Lord-Commander Laldere, Her Grace Furlbrow, His Grace Montclair, both father and son of the Knight-Lt. Loucelles, even jokesters like PFC Mawi: they all have a powerful effect on the morale of the Company, and help to drive us all to greater achievements, to even more noble heights of self-improvement and sacrifice to our duty.
Then there’s me. The blank-faced, socially dead, soulless Corporal Aurelious. A pale shadow in comparison to his peers, let alone his father. Incapable of being either Wizard, Ducal Guard, too frail of heart to be a holy man. Only befitting of the title Head Alchemist, as if a well trained monkey could not perform the role as well as I can. I am a drain upon the Regiment’s spirit, and I feel myself lagging behind my peers. My training is not enough, or it is too much, and I cannot decide which it is. With no purpose within the divisions, I find myself in a limbo, existing and performing my duties, but excelling in nothing, and inspiring no soul.
Thaddeus was more right than he might have realized.

Aurelie wasn’t sure what to expect when she had sent off that letter, asking for help from an organization dedicated to exterminating her kind. Had she not been out of options she probably wouldn’t have ever approached them, regardless of similar occupations.
But she had no one else to turn to. Her people were still in the hands of those intent on their destruction and only the Hellsings had the skills to counter the occult madness she knew was taking place. All she had to do was make sure to convince them that not only was it in their best interest to help but also keep them from filling her full of silver at the same time.
The public square was full as it was most days. People passed below her on their business, never looking up to the rooftops. Not that they’d see much. She knew how to keep herself out of sight without compromising her field of vision.
There. The man was casual, yes, but he moved too carefully to be anything but military. She doubted most would notice unless they had similar training. They osprey’s eyes flickered to more movement. A woman this time, also moving carefully. And then another on the other side of the square and fourth.
Operatives scouting out the area most likely. Probably seeking to eliminate any possible attempt for assassination. She had heard about the attempt in England. That was why she had been so careful in choosing her place to meet. Hopefully this would be less of a threat to a people already gun shy.
Twenty minutes later she watched a man and a woman walk into the square, brunette and blonde. She knew who they were. Aurelie had done her research into the matter when determining just what the best way to come out of this situation alive and hopefully with allies.
Trevor Belmont and Alice Hellsing. Sir Integra had taken the letter serious enough to send some of her top people apparently. Good. If Aurelie was any judge of a situation, she would need them and every bit of skill they and she had acquired.

Every once in a while, Leon will glance over at Aurelie to check on her. He had originally meant to help her with her gear but then quickly realized that perhaps it was best to let someone else do it. She did, after all, say she didn't want other people knowing about them and he's not sure his touches won't linger.
Not to mention, he needs to focus on giving orders to the team. They're told exactly what position to be in, they're told to follow his lead, to pay attention, and listen to him.
"Don't go rogue." He tells them sharply, his voice has raised into a far more authoritive one. One he hates using because that means he's taking responsibility for these men. "That's how you get killed."
The soldiers all fall in line with their yes sir's and Leon nearly winces, knowing that he's leading them into death. Fuck, he hates everything about this. This is why he hates working with a team.
Pushing that thought away, Leon knows he has to push all these thoughts away and hyperfocus on the mission. All the matters right now is the mission, there is no time for guilt or made up scenarios that may or may not become reality.
The plane lands quite a ways away from their destination so they aren't spotted, they'll have to trek through woods and who knows what else to get there but it's better than landing directly at the enemy's door.
"Does anyone have any questions before we head out?" The chorus of No Sir's is a relief but they aren't the only ones he's worried about so he turns his gaze to Aurelie. "What about you, Fontaine? You got questions, ask them now. Once we're out there, I don't need them distracting me unless absolutely necessary."
There’s a tense swallowing, and she’s leaning back, head angled against the seat. His touch does a lot to ground her, keep her from spiraling into a pit of panic.
The firearm sits heavy and ominous across her lap. God, she doesn’t often pray, but now she is muttering pleas under her breath, hoping she does not need to shoot at anyone or anything.
Their teammates continue to banter, chatting as if it were just another day on the job. She’s aware that for some of the older agents, the lighthearted repartee merely stood in as a poorly veiled coping mechanism. This would be their only opportunity for conversation, so why not use it?
But too many of them looked green. Was this their first mission? How prepared were they to die? She chatters her teeth, pushing such gruesome trains of thought out of her head.
At some point during the journey, a vetted agent assists Aurélie in suiting up. She’s fitted with a vest, some pouches and a holster, and unique to her kit, a trauma bag filled with the bare essentials should she come across a threatening wound. The gear hugs her body like a bitter, old friend, and through meditative resolve, she’s wearing a hardened expression on her features. It’s strangely nostalgic, but it breaks her heart that there may never be a day where she can forget what this feels like.
Before the plane touches ground, the entire squad is on their feet, ready to move as a unit at the first sight of solid land. Aurélie lingers towards the back, feeling over herself to double, triple, and quadruple check all supplies on her person. Her gun is loaded, her mind is focused, and her eyes are forward.
It’s quite a shame they were heading towards imminent death. On a happier day, she’d be sure to comment on how absolutely sexy Leon looked dressed to the nines in tactical gear and loadout.

HummingBird (part 2/?)
Peter Parker X Reader
Summary: readers first official day at school and first crime
word count: 2090
Part One
The first class of my day was pretty uneventful. I had precalculus with Mr. Evans which was fun. Who are you kidding dude you took calculus last summer. It’s not like I was gonna say that? I don’t wanna be that show off kid that knows all of the answers. Yeah well not participating makes you have conversations with yourself so sucks to be you nerd.
Jeez I really was having a conversation with myself. I was that bored with APUSH that I was arguing, with myself. Of course I loved US history, but the whole class made me miss Mr. Star Spangled Banner. Maybe I could just check my phone for any alerts of crime in the city.
“Ms. Carter,” Mr. Jameson said, catching my adrift attention, “Could you tell me about the Maryland Colony?”
I heard a few snickers come from behind me, clearly thinking I didn’t know a thing about history and unaware that Steve used to read history books to me at night instead of story books.
“The Maryland Colony was founded in 1634 by Lord Baltimore. It was to be a place for persecuted Catholics to find refuge, a safe haven. Made as an act of toleration.”
“Very nice Ms. Carter,” he continued. I turned back to find the boy who had laughed at me and gave him a real, genuine smile which really threw him off guard.
The rest of the class went well and before I knew it was lunch time. I was honestly surprised that for the first two classes, no one really thought to introduce me or guide me anywhere and as much as I didn’t need it, I did need to make friends. It was already lunch and I had nowhere to sit, or rather, no one to sit with. I scanned over the cafeteria, looking for a place to sit when I found a relatively empty table.
“Thats a lot of food you’ve got there,” the girl adjacent to me commented, “not like it’s a bad thing. You should be able to eat as much as you’d like.”
“Oh no it’s fine,” I laughed, “I just have a condition.”
“Diabetes?” She asked, probably feeling worse about her comment. She seemed like a nice girl.
“No-no, I just have like,” I paused, thinking about a lie, “A really abnormally high metabolism. If i burn more calories than I eat I pass out.” Well, I guess that was only half a lie. My powers entailed that I needed to consume more sugar than regular so I don’t black out. It wasn’t pretty. “Anyways, I’m Aurelie, but my friends call me Bird. What’s your name?”
“Michelle, and I don’t have any friends” She responded. I was going to say something back but by the time I figured out what to say enough time had passed that a response would just be awkward and sad. Lunch soon ended.
Physics was my next class, I sat next to this kid named Ned. He was pretty cool actually, we were lab partners and I helped him with the worksheets.
“So what school are you transferring from?” He asked, scribbling down some notes.
“Oh, I was homeschooled. Parents thought I ought to be socialized or something.” I responded with a chuckle.
“Like in meangirls?” He asked.
“What?-”
“Nothing.”
My last class of the day was P.E. with that same kid who had made fun of me in APUSH. Apparently his name was flash or something? LAmE. It appears that me totally owning him earlier on in the day wasn’t enough for him and so he decided to try and own me on a physical level as well.
“Twenty bucks that new kid drops out of the pacer before it hits twenty,” he announced, the teacher either not knowing or not caring.
“Four hundred bucks said that the new kid is gonna be the last person still going,” I childed, another genuine smile flashed at him. He and most others burst out in laughter.
“What are you doing?” Ned asked me (He was in this class too.), “this is a mixed class, seniors regularly score over the hundreds.”
“Oi Ned, chill dude. Trust me.” I put my hair up into a ponytail, the kids that had made it a point to beat me were showing real game by doing pushups and sit ups. Some of the girls had began to do stretches too to show off.
“Maybe you should.. Um.. show off too,” he suggested. I shot him a look. “I mean look at them! They’re practically asking for it!”
“And who am I to give those meanies what they want,” I chirped.
“Are you even sure you can do this? Four hundred dollars is a lot of money…” Ned gulped. I only gave him a knowing look.
“The FitnessGram™ Pacer Test is a multistage aerobic capacity test that progressively gets more difficult as it continues. The 20 meter pacer test will begin in 30 seconds. Line up at the start. The running speed starts slowly, but gets faster each minute after you hear this signal. [beep] A single lap should be completed each time you hear this sound. [ding] Remember to run in a straight line, and run as long as possible. The second time you fail to complete a lap before the sound, your test is over. The test will begin on the word start. On your mark, get ready, start.” I began to run to the beat of the weird elevator torture music and one by one people began to drop out. When Ned left (around 23) the group cheered and encouraged me to follow my friend. I gave him a look that said I will avenge you and I hope he got that message. By the time we hit one hundred and thirty two, the last of them had basically dragged themselves off the floor, giving me wicked glares as I lightly jogged across the way, a small smile on my face. Flash had dropped out around one hundred and twenty seven, and I was pretty sure that Ned was recording me. I was pretty sure the teacher was going to turn off the tape but he didn’t and I began to think that he had heard my little bet with Flash.
As the numbers increased the other students got angrier and angrier and eventually the tape stopped. I had ran all 21 levels, all 247 laps.
I walked off the court over to Flash, a cheerful grin on my face. I was sorta out of breath and definitely sweating more than I’d like but hey, it wasn’t that awful.
“Hey Flash” I greeted with a friendly smile. He handed me the four hundred.
“This isn’t over, Carter,” he spat, a grimace on his face as the teacher gave a blind eye to us.
“Hey, it’s okay,” I comforted in a sickly sweet voice, “What really counts, is that you tried! You did your best. Did you break your own record today?” he nodded, “See! There we go. With the right motivation you can do anything.” I booped his nose with the tip of my finger.
With that, I walked over to Ned, handing him the four hundred. “Here you go sir, four hundred dollars.”
“What? I can’t take it from you!” He exclaimed, clumsily trying to give it back.
“Dude, I have a lot of money, I don’t need it. Just use the money to make something cool and then show it to me.” I reassured him.
“A-are you sure?” He asked, still wary of accepting such a large quantity of money.
“Positive.”

After school I busted through the doors and down the street as quickly as possible, people looked at me weird because my hair was still wet from my post pacer shower but I didn’t care. I was ready to fite™ some crime. The only other person who was out of school by now was that kid that ned sat with at lunch.
I went into an allyway and began to strip, which was something that probably came out of a bad porno. I put pulled on my suit that Tony had made and hid my backpack in an empty garbage can. The suit matched my alter-ego The Hummingbird™ with its dark iridescent fabric. The fabric was also very lightweight and feather like in texture. I had my own AI built in that I named Orzo. I pushed off the floor and flew up into the sky at high speed, shaking my head like a dog to dry off my hair. Hopefully the local vigilante wouldn’t mind some company here on the streets.
I flew higher into the sky, hoping to get a good scope of whatever was going on. This was my first chance at action since, well, ever. Tony never let me help him whatsoever (though he knows I am fully capable.) He didn’t even let me help him in Germany! He let Spiderman, a vigilante he’d never even met join but not the girl that he practically raised! Not only that, but I didn’t even get to meet him. I’ve only ever heard about him through the news and other media. Anyways sorry I got a little bit heated.
Though I expected New York to be just busting with crime 24/7 it honestly was pretty calm. There wasn’t much to do for a while. Very minor things to do. A couple of people stealing purses, I helped a homeless person move to a different street?? Ralph now lived on 22 and third. By seven o’clock not only had I done nothing that day, but I also hadn’t even encountered the spiderkid! Then, almost like the world was answering my prayer (not saying that I wished for crime and anarchy but I was bored) I heard a crash come from not more than down the block. Fresh crime, crime so fresh that my police tracker app hadn’t even gone off yet. I took flight, zooming across the city, trying to stay out of sight. The, yet darkened, streets were filled with life and pedestrians, some checking to see what the commotion was and many fleeing in the other direction.
I entered the store that was currently being robbed. It looked to be some type of antique jewelry store raided by the average thieves.
“Pals, I don’t think they’re open. Maybe you should come back later,” I said to the men, making them aware of my presence. They were taken aback by my appearance and probably my voice as well. By vibration my vocal chords at a different frequency, I could modify my voice to sound louder and have a similar reverb to that of a hum (at normal human pitch).
“And who are you? Spiderkids protege?” One of them snickered.
“I’d hardly say that,” I seethed bumping my head on the ceiling. I silently cursed myself. When I get excited or really invested into something I begin to hover which isn’t that helpful.
Two of the three men charged at me while the other one tried to grab their belongings and leave. I used my speed to use their strength against them, quickly finishing the job and knocking them out. I grabbed onto one of the feather/scales of my suit and pulled it out which transformed it to a larger, sharp feather which I used to pin them both to the floor. I darted out of the store and into the alleyway that the third thief had escaped.
“You come any closer and I’ll have to stab you!” He bellowed, pointing his knife at me. Wow, dude didn’t even think to bring a gun. I put my hands in the air and began to sob.
“Oh my god, you found my one fear, small knives.” I hung my head claiming defeat.
“Wait really” He asked, a look of genuine surprise on his face. I pulled out another feather and threw it, pinning his sleeve to the wall.
“No,” I chuckled out in disbelief, “anyways, I’ms sure when the cops get here you’ll have had enough time to figure out a reason why you’re stuck in an alleyway with lots of fun jewels in your bag, good day sir.”
I flew back into the sky just to see the one and only spiderkid zooming towards the shop.
“Hey dude! I already got it, you’re good. See ya” I hollered, waving good bye and flying around a bit to ward off any arachnids if I needed to. Maybe I shoulda talked to him?
