notes on how i go about stylizing cats from reference.

ive observed when drawing a cat with extra fat, its easy to lose the form and have it look like a balloon animal. if you keep bony landmarks and silhouette in mind as you caricature this can be avoided. these landmarks are places like joints, the spine, some points of the ribcage, and certain bones in the face.

the joints are where you "break" the silhouette of the figure. these are essential to a strong drawing and selling the volume of your character. interpreting the contrast of straights and curves around the figure will give a visual rhythm and prevent your drawing from appearing stiff and lifeless. some inner descriptive lines in places where muscle, fur, skin and fat are more obvious create a more defined shape that can really add something extra if you find your drawing is appearing too flat.

selling the markings by having them follow the contours of the body will also really help in making sure your drawings come across as volumetric. its easy to slap them on as an afterthought, but copy pasted looking markings can totally ruin the illusion of your characters dimension!

this of course is all relative to your own goals when drawing a piece, if you want your art to be flat and graphic, go for it! i will say it always helps my design sense to understand how things work in a 3d space before i get really abstract with them. the more you can understand your subject the easier it is to find success with the end goal of your piece.

this also geared towards animation. when you can "see" clearly how the character is structured from every level, drawing them in sequential motion becomes just that much easier. thanks for reading!

Generally, for the planned-out pieces, I do a loose sketch on paper, where I focus more on the shape, form, and posture of a figure--

I like sketching in pen because it allows me to make mistakes and process them (masochistic)

Then I can take and scan and do a cleaner line layer/edit over it if I so please :]

But when I'm fiddle farting around, I just sorta put pen to paper without any guidelines-- like a madman!!

Drawing in pen has helped break me out of the constant frustrated erasing cycle, plus I recommend trying some free figure drawing classes (youtube has a few), which helped give me more confidence on the movement and overall shape of building a form and allows them to be all messy and beautiful :]

Wow! I’ve never been asked for a tutorial! Okay, I will try my best, even tho I been meaning to redesign how I draw him, I am thankful you like it!!

Here is a tutorial on how to draw sans face in my style.

First I start with the skull, two ellipses, top half must be longer, but not too long, he will end up looking like megamind, nothing wrong with that but we ain’t drawing that blue man today,

Then the eyes, the eyes can be hard, but usually I just make em a little weird square. Important to position them in the upper ellipse

Obviously add the pupil or light bulb or whatever you kids call it these days in your gay fanfics, and fill the black abyss underneath those beautiful eyes.

Nose is just an isosceles, the trick is to position it with the tip at the height of the eyes, not completely in the middle, not too low.

Cheeks at the very end of the erm, cheeks?…with black squares on the side to let him breathe between his welded teeth.

Beautiful smile only a mother could love. (me). Don’t forget to add a bunch of teeth, don’t give him like 3, he looks like a sad unloved child, a lot of teeth makes him look like a sad man, which he is.

I know it’s not a very good tutorial, but erm, totally feel free to draw over it and trace to study, I’m not going to get mad, anything that helps to improve your art and understand how others art work (do ask other artists if you can do it with their art please, don’t get me in trouble).

Your art is so good and I really like your style! I was wondering, how do you draw backgrounds so well?

You probably mean that one background in the most recent part of the 3 months au comic which the making of was quite of a journey so im gonna explain it step by step

step 1. Pretend that you know what you're doing and practice (for example this background that I drew over a year ago for RinRee's comic "Broken Bonds" (the characters were drawn by her)), gain some experience

step 2. Get a minecraft reference (if you suck at perspective like me)

step 3. fail miserably

step 4. get more references

step 5. figure out what you did wrong, study (for ex. your references), practice some more (i cant show because my practice were other backgrounds for the 3 months au comic)

in my case what i did wrong was lack of warm up (the last time i drew an actual background was few months ago which is WAY TOO LONG), making it not look like an actual train and in general making the room look too organized and empty. Mikey is a chaotic and artistic soul so it's obvious that he'd have a mess in his room (it's important to think about what a character would have in their room, ex. art supplies, sticky notes/stickers, junk, posters etc)

step 6. try again

BONUS: I genuinely enjoy making backgrounds, so it's easier for me to stay patient and pay the attention to them that they need! :]

Hey! I need help on an art project, the goal was to pass on a part of the artistic process to others, so I decided to make a drawing tutorial meant to teach you to draw sans from undertale:

it's for anyone to try! whether you've never drawn him or already have a thousand times, whether you're an artist or not, getting a wide variety of drawings will help a lot anyways!

the only requirements is that you follow the instructions given, though you can draw him in any position you would like (this tutorial was made with the idea of teaching the shapes that make up his design and not just the lines for a certain pose) and that you reblog this post with the end product
