I have uhhhh a new Skyrim OC again. Probably the strongest mage I’ve ever made (I love Severin but he’s a lickle necromancer and everything he summons kills the enemies for him. He persuaded Ancano not to be a dick… this guy would wipe the floor with him). His name is Gwalchmai, an altmer mage specialising in everything EXCEPT conjuration. He doesn’t like conjuring things to do all the work for him. He likes being creative, the fucken psychopath.
He gets on extremely well with Taliesin (maybe a bit too well if you catch my drift) and for some reason he also enjoys Lucien’s company (although Lucien refers to him as ‘Bran’ because Gwalchmai told him to - Gwalchmai witnessed Lucien pronounce his name once with the kiki ‘ch’ instead of the bouba ‘ch’ and was mortified). He lives in Morthal, has a slightly more than friendly rivalry with Sybille Stentor 🥴 and plays court wizard to Jarl Idgrod Ravencrone, because who better to keep the vampires in check in Morthal than another territorial vampire with the spellcasting equivalent of nukes for hands?
Tumblr media
Gwalchmai wants Taliesin almost as much as Lucien wants Gwalchmai. He also has a horse named Annwn.
Anyway. Have some aesthetic screenshots of him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
His context? He came to Skyrim as a follower of Julianos, seeking to learn more about his deity by living in the rectory in the temple of the divines. He soon fucked around and found out with Sybille Stentor, however, and hopped out of Solitude and into Morthal - out of her territory - to become Court Wizard to Idgrod. He worries he’s stepped on Falion’s toes, but Falion doesn’t give a fuck; at least with Gwalchmai as the Court Wizard now, the townsfolk don’t hound him as much.
Out of the frying pan and into the fire, though, because now Gwalchmai has to assert himself over Movarth Piquine, and unlike Alva, I don’t think he’s going to be able to fuck his way out of this one.

pet peeve of the day: fooling around on fo4 nexus and seeing a racemenu preset for “Female character that doesn't look like she just climbed out of a magazine cover” and clicking on bc the tiny preview picture looks mildly promising but then the character model has immaculately applied eyeliner and mascara and eyeshadow and plucked eyebrows with only tasteful scars and even though admittedly it’s better than most presets the features are still just. desperately still trying to look attractive but manage to be off-proportion enough to look mildly uncanny

What’s Fallout like? Like I know I can google what kind of game it is but more than that what games would you compare it to? and is it more story-based or gameplay-based?
That's a difficult one to answer and I'm not sure I have the authority to do it lol
But I'll try!
The Fallout fandom is fairly complicated due to the IP being passed around and the lore/values of its storytelling being muddied over the years. That being said I think both old-school and new fans would still agree that the story is the most important element, as they're meant to be role playing games where you make decisions on often heavy matters (especially in the games of the original devs).
Fallout 1 and 2 are turn-based isometric rpg-s from the late 90s. If you like that type of gameplay, they're fantastic games and cult classics. They don't shy away from heavy themes.
Then the IP got sold to Bethesda and their version of Fallout is a FPS/TPS action experience, as seen in Fallout 3 and 4. The combat is fun but even the newest game is shit by shooter standards. If you played an Elder Scrolls game (like Skyrim), they're like that but set in a retro futuristic post apocalypse. A large slice of the fandom has only played these ones and skipped the original turn-based games.
Fallout New Vegas was made by the original team but using Bethesda's engine. Many fans would tell you that out of the modern titles, that's the one with the best writing.
Fallout 4 was a very popular title due to the scrap and build system. As you adventure, you can scavenge all sorts of trash and then build your own little settlements in the wasteland and populate them with settlers. Add mods to that, and the community really did some magic. It made people connect with the world of Fallout on a personal level.
The story in a nutshell: in an alternate timeline, survivors of a devastating nuclear war are trying to rebuild and make the irradiated wasteland of the United States liveable again but every group and faction has a different take on how society should be rebuilt. When the writing is done well, your choices have weight and it's impossible to be fair and please everyone. You get to discover a variety of different factors that lead to the Great War and you have to wager whether humanity is doomed to make the same mistakes all over again. Is there a way to avoid them? What kind of sacrifices does that require? Etc.
A lot of it is supposed to be a critical look at war, 50s Americana and the dangers of nationalism, rampant consumerism, xenophobia, etc.
Hope this helped a little! It's difficult to find two Fallout fans who are on the exact same opinion of all the games. I personally think, the fun part of the games is when you get to carve a little slice out of the wasteland for yourself and your community and the stimulating part is the overarching story and lore.
It's no wonder the original writers made The Outer Worlds too, which I don't consider a legendary game but the similarities are obvious in the themes.

What kind of video games do you like to play Mr. Atoms?
Tumblr media
So many! Assuming there's time. These days there's generally not, so I've been bingeing Vampire Survivors in half-hour doses.
Above is a gif from Noita, my top game of the pandemic. It's an old-school "Metroidvania", but every pixel is simulated and you're a witch who can manipulate her spells (and thereby the world) in a seemingly infinite number of ways. Here, I've built magical "buzzsaws" around myself, which blinded me to the shadow amoeba. In Noita, almost every death is due to hubris, and I think I love that pendulum swing. If you're lucky and skilled, you can become a walking whirlwind of destruction, but you're always your own worst enemy. Bonus: You can turn your vomit into rats.
Tumblr media
I'm currently on a break in the midst of my Baldur's Gate 3 run, with a party consisting of my BG2 character's daughter, Karlatch, Lazelle, and Shadowheart. Ladies' Night!
I'm also playing a bit of Shadows of Doubt. I'm not sure it'll hold up long-term, but it's got a lot of potential.
I don't really limit myself by genre or platform, but I'd say that I primarily play indie PC games. The games in my Steam library that I keep going back to again and again?
Cities: Skylines: A chill City Building Simulator. Lots of fun mods.
Darkest Dungeon: This thing is a classic strategy game IMO.
Death Road to Canada: A light, fast Project Zomboid. Dogs with guns!
Tumblr media
Dwarf Fortress: For me, it's the ultimate fantasy sim. I love it so much. Looking forward to Adventure Mode finally appearing on Steam.
Project Zomboid: The ultimate lonely 2D zombie apocalypse survival game. Or non-survival game, I suppose.
Total War: Warhammer: For when I'm in a strategy-y mood. Like a lot of people, I'm a bit soured on the modern DLC scene, so I'm still waiting on #3 even though I'm a Chaos stan.
Not on Steam? I do play some Star Citizen from time to time. I backed it a decade ago. I used to joke that it was the game I was going to retire into, but more and more that's looking less and less like a joke. Still, it's made some good progress in the last couple of years and I'm hopeful that repair and engineering turn out to be fun.
Tumblr media
The game I'm looking forward to most would be the next Elder Scrolls. I know it's still a ways off. Ever since my Nereverine landed in Morrowind with the intention of becoming a just and righteous cleric and instead found herself an unwitting villain and colonizer, I fell in love with the Elder Scrolls and it's deep, gray lore. It is (for me) a great way to really get into a character's head. Roleplaying... go figure.
Tumblr media
Since Morrowind (and a backtrack into Daggerfall), I only allow myself one canon playthrough. My rule is to "let it ride", so that aside from death, if I screw up or if something unexpected happens I don't save-scum. All of my characters are related, either by quest or bloodline. I already know that my next character will be Aventus Aretino (the kid you catch summoning the Dark Brotherhood). My Skyrim character (above) had adopted him and then left him in the hands of a vampire, so I should be covered even if there's a big time jump. Now I just have to wait six more years for the game. And then maybe two for mods. God I'm so old.
I need to spend more time with Dave the Diver.
Anything current I'm missing out on?

04 June: Mythical Creatures: witches/wizards/warlocks, werewolves/werecreatures, vampires, dragons, etc.
05 June: Occupation Swap: tattoo artist, flower shop, mechanic, barista, doctor, musician, baker, etc.
06 June: Meet-Cutes: online, speed-dating, looking for a roommate, boarding school classmates, etc.
07 June: Soulmates: red string of fate, seeing in black and white until you meet them, feeling each other's emotions, etc.
08 June: Books/Games/Movies/TV: star wars, twilight, the uglies, percy jackson, bones, skyrim, zelda, etc.

Although there are suggested AUs for each day, any alternate universe work is acceptable! Just be clear about what type of AU it is in your tags or author's notes!
Additionally, this year we will be accepting works that are inspired by any past Reddie Week prompt. Please make it clear which prompt you are using. Here is a list of possible, related tags you might use for past and present prompts. Specific past prompts can be found in each year's sub-collection on AO3.
You can share your work by tagging it with #reddieweek or tagging @reddieweek in your post.

What are your modlists typically like? Like when playing?
Do you do a lot of quest "fix" mods like the college quest fixes? do you do a lot of heavy town mods or just keep light like jk's or leave the worldspace alone? Simonrim or Enairim or? Do you have a favorite huge texture project, like skyland or 202x?
I think my modlists are mainly a mix of aesthetics, flora/environmental, lore additions, and general atmosphere. I like playing slow, walking through Skyrim's nature, discovering things, and camping.
For quest fixing mods, I've got jaysherpa's quest extensions and AndrealphusVIII's various fixes, I feel like they don't overdo it.
For walled cities, I ported the old version of JK's Cities Lite and use it with Dawn of Skyrim for a moderate experience (though, I do like Capital Windhelm Expansion enough I may edit out JK's and DoS' Windhelm for it.)
For smaller towns, I go a little more far out with either Cities of the North or Great Town of... series of mods. And Redbag's Rorikstead, because the sod roofs are neat :)
I don't really use Enai's or Simon's mods exclusively. I think I would lean towards Simon's just because I think Enai's are too over the top (I do NOT like Wintersun, but Apocalypse was pretty fun), but his just kept crashing for me.
I like Skyland, it looks really nice and doesn't murder my FPS like Skyrim 20xx did (also, it feels more cohesive to me.) I do overwrite some of it with smaller mods, though.
Thanks for asking!

Cracks my knuckles. Skyrim mod anon here- if you want more story or a more fleshed world in terms of characters, 3Dnpcs is an old classic I’ll swear by, as long as you like dialogue. If you like followers, Inigo (as mentioned), Lucien, Vilja, and others are a good place to start, and often you can find more interesting ones by checking what companion mods are compatible with them!
For atmosphere, frostfall and its dependencies are a MUST. You can easily edit the stats of it if it makes gameplay too difficult, but if you lean into the structure and do more walking instead of fast traveling, it adds IMMENSELY to the game and lets it all feel less like running around doing chores and more like an epic, picteresque journey. Good quality companion or world mods can add to the flesh of traveling by foot or horse through a vibrant world!
For combat, apocalypse (the magic mod) makes playing and fighting mages MUCH more varied and interesting, and immersive armors/immersive weapons adds equally to the more physical aspects of both fighting and its aesthetic presentation. A really good tip for exploring new mods is to look at what mods require mods you already use!
As for utility, I STRONGLY suggest using Nexus and its specialized launcher. It doesn’t take up much space and it makes the process of trying to mod a game that loves to crash WAY more manageable and less stressful.
Additionally, a tip- while modding, only add two to three mods at a time, start up the game, and then quit before adding more. It helps prevent the game from becoming corrupted while adapting to mods.
And one last rec if you intend to replay more… the mod alternate start! Sometimes I just like to play Skyrim as some random farmer with like, food and house mods or something. It can add a variety of different experiences away from the games linear plot if you’d prefer to stray.
Anyways, good luck!
You are so real for this thank you!!!!

I know this should be obvious since I have a Skyrim sideblog and all that and memes n jokes aside but I miss playing Skyrim….. it was a significant part of my high school years and I spent whole summers putting hours into it. And I’d been waiting for Skyrim:extended cut to drop before starting it back up again (even tho I rlly should test my tentative a mod list first) but watching someone’s modded apocalypse let’s play hit the nostalgia in a way other stuff hadn’t in a while

on this fine evening, after unsuccessfully trying to get skyrim to work, i am once again remembering a conversation i had recently.
when starfield came out, i, mostly jokingly, asked a group of friends "so what is the game about?"
i haven't scouted that many reviews - in fact i only watched a few videos, only one of them post-release - but videogame news seep their way in front of my eyes quite frequently. i have seen reveals and some discussions, but somehow, even after starfield actually came out and people claimed to have played all the way through the main questline, i still knew next to nothing. what is the game about?
and i didn't seek this info on my own - i bet wikipedia has, at this point, been updated to give a rundown of the story - because i noticed this pretty early on and found it entertaining to observe how people talked about it. spacehips, playstyle builds, weapons,.. media criticism in general is at a pretty low point because media comprehension is, but with things like movies, people do discuss themes passionately. even music gets topical analysis, if you're not on the ghost subreddit. tumblr likes to talk themes, of course, the new zelda game has been through it, bg3 is going through it despite all the horny. maybe it's because starfield has barely reached my dash and the only bits of information i see are from gamer bros, but apart from "people have colonized some planets and there's weird rocks", i haven't learned what starfield is about.
the funny rebuttal to this question came, of course, in the form of "well what is skyrim about?"
i do not expect bethesda to write a profound, deep story, those days are gone (since morrowind, or arguably, morrowind is the only one), and tes has it easier thanks to being an estabilished, developed universe, but i feel like it would take more effort to actively not make a describable narrative. like the game's gotta be about something, right? so what is it?
but i actually did think about skyrim in this context. i'm often dismissive of it because 'it's just a blank slate' and that's why it has the biggest modding scene at the moment, and that's true, but there has to be substance somewhere deep down.
it's awfully clear skyrim only ever introduces a concept and then doesn't go nearly as far with it as it could, and it's sometimes frustrating to think about it in the context of tes lore because of this (and modders have attempted to flesh different concepts out with varying degrees of success) but arguably, skyrim is about the inevitability of change. at least that's what i answered in that friend group.
this idea floats around the civil war and even the guild quests but i think it fits the main story with alduin. how he wound up in 4e 201 in the first place, a delayed apocalypse, one that is bound to come at some point. and how ultimately, the ldb doesn't absorb his soul, and even though it really is condensed into a throwavay dialogue option with the chief greybeard, because of how the final battle went down, this apocalypse may still come.
and i think that's a cool idea to at least introduce. maybe my hopes are too high (i'm clowning here hoping it will play a part in the plot of tes6), but since even skyrim, the blandest of them all, has something for the mind to ponder, i can't not ask,
what is starfield about?
imma go read the wikipedia page i guess.

Modding Skyrim is so much fun because I can literally take an AU and just. make it part of the game.
A few months ago I saw a mod that made it so you could activate the eclipse weather indefinitely and now I've got a full vampire apocalypse AU with undead and daedra running rampant, dying plant life, and EXTREMELY OP vampires.
also, screenshot because this mod makes EVERYTHING look spooky in the best way possible:

Why do devs make limited dlc content for games?
Why do devs make limited dlc content for games? So many games come out that have these massive world maps and they will release a few dlcs and then move on to their next game. I get that people grow bored with game worlds but if the content they added was creative and engaging wouldn’t a lot of gamers want to keep playing? The newer ac games always have these giant maps that have so much empty space, Skyrim is a good example of this look at how long people have been playing that because of the modding community. I also thought about this with far cry new dawn how they could’ve repurposed that entire map post apocalypse but made a 7 hour game instead. Another example is botw and totk, they made a great game that felt new using basically the same map. I don’t think this should be an excuse for devs to be lazy and rehash all their games but it feels like a lot of wasted potential that could cut down on dev times and utilize already great world maps.
