Hello and Good day everyone!

Today I want to talk about some simple preservation and kitchen scrap tips. With having an interest in sustainability, low waste, eco friendly and growing food for my family it just makes sense to know how to store produce for long term, convenient use and to make the most of my crops and groceries.

I had a few carrots and celery bags I picked up this week for varied food use and figured I'd do a lil post today on one of the ways I preserve carrots.

I don't have a pressure canner, or else I'd make some half pints and pints of carrots for the pantry. Instead I make do with what I have~ which is a freezer, dehydrator, or pickling.

Today im going to focus on freezer method.

You'll wanna take your carrots and wash 'em up. You can let them dry after wash up but its not strictly necessary.

Chop of both ends of the carrot. You can peel your carrots too if desired (save all these bits for later soup stock or to give to your chickens or compost piles) if you have nice leafy greens on your carrots, you can use those greens similar to parsley or as a salad additive. (Chickens enjoy them as well!)

For freezing carrots you'll want to blanch them first.

Blanching is just taking a pot of water, bringing ro a rolling boil and dumping raw veggies in (like carrots, green beans, broccoli spinich, sweet potato greens) the veggies will often go from a almost matte color to a brighter color when ready. It's suggested across media that about 5-10 minutes is enough.

Drain the carrots from the hot water and give them an ice bath (I usually don't have ice so I soak and rinse a few times to bring down the heat in the veggies)

I let the carrots drain and dry a bit, when dry I spread a towel over my baking pan, layer out a layer of carrot, popped it in the freezer.

When frozen, I pull the towel up, roll the carrots round a bit to break any that may be together apart and pack them in the storage container and pop them back into the freezer till needed.

Also that as the days progress they get more cordial with each other eg by end May she’s less concerned about being-#-seen with you and more on the ‘you’d do well to learn from person x’ train. Also Akira’s willingness to be encouraging to her #likely cause their evolving(evolved) relationship allows them to #mind you I haven’t completed the game yet but #I’d like to think the newspaper club member eventually correctly deduces who the phantom thieves are

Me writing what should have been at most a bullet point one-shot comedic romance adventure: “hee hee hoo I’ll knock this out in no time”

Me, four months later and 112k+ words in: “Hmm I think I need to look at the practical engineering reference guide again so we can really assess the recycler issue on this cistern in the compound because I don’t know that they could have it on the lower level if the mountain rock is going to have a level 9 on the Mohs hardness scale—”

#Cannot stress enough how very little any of this research actually gets put into the fic itself #I just need for any technical/sci-fi details I include to sound somewhat believable even if they’re only mentioned in passing #Most of these conflicts are based on their environment so it has to have some measure of truth at the center #It’s like how you can tell when a book centered around nature or agriculture has been written by somebody who didn’t actually grow up aroun #either of those things and obviously hasn’t done their research to the point their characters know what they’re talking about #Anyway yeah. The soldiers need to seem competent at fixing their equipment and improvising tools based on the vast amount of training #and education they were given #Which means I as the author need to understand the problem the complications AND THE SOLUTION well enough the characters sound #not just knowledgeable but natural and familiar with it when talking about it #Same goes for the pilot. I’m pulling out my old flight manuals and looking into advanced avionics just so I can consolidate #a simplified answer into two sentences she can use to explain her area of expertise to somebody who has no idea what kind of ship she flies #Anyway #Fic: Call Sign #The actual simple reason for doing this is that effective imagery and worldbuilding fills out the world and makes it richer as a result #And unfortunately that means I am doing several crash courses in about fifteen different sciences so that I know what I’m talking about #Fun fact I wanted to be a cargo pilot but the aviation program at my university was THE most expensive major they had #And I’m not good/fast enough at math to get through even the small aircraft piloting guide 😞#If I can’t have the adventures and experiences I want I can at least tell stories where they happen #The good news is I have had plenty of experience fixing things and improvising technical solutions based on what science and history I know #So many of these problems are just household and vehicle issues on a bigger scale

In a fit of me procrastinating projects I should be working, by working on other projects, I finally finished the cloak I started making for my frumpkin plush literally years ago

Now ignore the fact that Ren fair is a week and a half away and I still have to finish the shirt I'm supposed to wear to it >.<

#got frustrated when i was trying to make the ear holes and dropped ot for ages #but a while ago i bought some bias tape in exactly the right color and just never got around to adding it #technically i could still edge the bottom hem but i doubt that'll ever happen #also rn it's using two sewing pins to stay in place until i find a better solution but idk if i ever wil #since its on such a small scale #frumpkin doesn't live on my bed tho so it should be fine to keep using the pins #oh i also finally gave him a lil cloak chain from one of my old childhood necklaces

I really feel like some of you genuinely think that if all billionaires died tomorrow the world would magically be a better place. Their wealth doesn’t come with a will ensuring it’s redistributed fairly across the planet - it goes to their kin or organizations of their choice. The systems that allowed such vile people to maintain their status will still exist. 4 dead billionaires isn’t this victory you think it is - there’s 4 new billionaires inheriting their wealth and status. Killing every billionaire would just shuffle the pieces and players, it wouldn’t change the game.

The fact that it is Arceus helps- the 2 points on loyalty and trust actually say a lot; most people probably only sit at 1, because trainer Felix just doesn't fucking obey or trust people as far as he can throw em. This has a lot to do with both punkish fuck authority personality, and being callously immortal- he's here to make friends and protect, not take orders. Someone's bound to try to tell him what to do, while he's free range.

And also so since it is God, since it is somebody who's seen it all, what good is pretending not to hurt them? Being afraid to be burden on them? Pretending to man up, or be an adult, be all these things he's 'supposed' to be.

So basically he's fucking with em back just as much, and dumping the affection out because there's no point for pretense.

PLA just kinda cemented that playfulness tbh. He's as genuine as he can be rn, without completely blind trust and faith.

I hate that so much discourse into fighting climate change is talking about bioenginerring a special kind of seaweed that removes microplastics or whatever other venture-capital-viable startup idea when we have known for forever about shit like digging crescent shaped holes to catch rainwater and turning barren land hospitable

#environmentalism #bioengineering seaweed that breaks down microplastics is still pretty fantastic!#those scientists are helping along a different axis #and those type of solutions are not always profit driven #this sort of project would be great for california tho—and was implemented on the small scale as an emergency measure #during last year's flood #anyway yeah let's continue to look for new solutions while still implementing what we have that works!

Hello hello~

We finally had enough Egg from the gals to make a large meal so I did :)

They don't look as orangey on camera :'( but they are a nice deeper orange.

Decided since they came from our gals I wanted to save the shells for calcium for them.

To prepare it's suggested to wash your eggs well, I rinse them and then baked them at 350 for about 20-30 minutes. (I used an old peice of aluminum foil for this.)

All baked up, time to crunch em up!

All cronched! Next I'll just toss em out in the run/yard or in their feed. Doing this increases the hardness of the eggs the gals lay.

Usually bags of crushed oyster shell can be acquired at animal feed stores. (Sometimes regular pet stores carry them too just smaller bags and finer grind) usually comes in 25-50 lb sacks and last a long time for a small-to-midsized flock. I free feed it to the gals in a ceramic plate.

Tbh I bought a bag probably 3 yrs ago and still haven't gone through it all.

The eggshells are also useful for adding calcium to gardens or placed among beds to help deter pests animals. Also useful for making a calcium spray for plants. (Be sure to wash and bake/boil thoroughly for all applications and uses)
