Today I ascended from this mortal plane and remembered why I love movies and want to pursue filmmaking.

For context, I watched Barbie, and the Miraculous Ladybug movie today.

So, I saw Barbie with my mom, in a theater full of women. The first five minutes, I was sat there like "Did the internet lie to me again?" cause I was genuinely confused about what the hell was happening onscreen. But once I managed to get into the groove of things, I really enjoyed myself. I didn't play with Barbies growing up, and it was still enjoyable to me. It was so campy and funny(thank you Kate McKinnon and Michael Cera for being a big source of that), but it had some pretty deep themes, such as criticism against both a patriarchy and a matriarchy, the struggles of women in society, existentialism, and mother-daughter relationships. Definitely a movie for the girlies, but I think it's enjoyable for everyone.

I think the music was great. My mom hates musicals, despises them with her whole heart, but she told me after the movie that she loved I'm Just Ken. And yeah, it was so much. My favorite bit was the fast paced "Can you feel the Kenergy" moments. I've been playing Identity V, and I use that to hype me up for matches. It gives 80s power ballad, and it's super fun to listen to over and over again. Ryan Gosling did a very good job with it. I can see I'm Just Ken and Peaces battling it out for Best Original Song. Push was great as well, despite being underused in the movie, the full version(which is a cover of an existing song) is very interesting, and lyrically fits the movie so well.

I'm not typically a fan of bright colors in movies, catch me watching The Batman any day, but Barbie is the exception, as it just made certain scenes feel so much more important. Mattel offices being cold and gray, really sold that corporate vibes, and the soft white at the ending with Ruth definitely made it feel like Barbie was reaching a life-changing conclusion. It's a wonderful use of color.

Now the themes are the big draw of the movie. Regarding the patriarchy, matriarchy, and daily struggles of women, those themes are definitely hard to miss, but they do so much good with them. Showing Ken being essentially brainwashed by the idea of the patriarchy is interesting, and definitely rings home for anyone who grew up with boys as friends. I've seen a few guy friends of mine turn from sweet guys, into womanizers as they grew older. And it also shows that a matriarchy isn't good either, by showing how the Kens feel less than in BarbieLand. The Ken's situation is a muted version of women's situations in the real world. The Kens aren't sexualized or hated, but they're ignored. In the real world, both in the movie and real life, women have it worse than the Kens, and feel in a similar position. Makes it easy to enjoy both perspectives. Barbie focusing on thoughts of death and change as a whole hits with me on a personal level, as I have a lot of issues with existentialism, and any movie with death as a major theme usually brings me close to tears(such as Puss in Boots 2, curse you good movies). Seeing Barbie meet her creator in Ruth was so sweet, and was incredibly heartwarming.

Special mention to the line "We mother stand still so our daughters can look back to see how far they've come". It made me want to give my mom the biggest hug, and I'm in no way a hugger.

Then I went home, and watched the Miraculous Ladybug movie because I had nothing else to do. I've been with the show since 2020, which isn't as long as other fans, but the show still sticks in my brain the same. I knew the animation was going to be great, and that the art direction would make up for any shortcomings in the story. And while yes, the plot was rushed (duh, like, how many years has it taken to get to this point in the show? its gonna feel rushed) but the art was absolutely stunning. My favorite moment was from Hawkmoth's villain song, Chaos Will Reign(available on Spotify) when they pulled out the Disney Villain lime green color. I love that color, and seeing Hawkmoth with it made me ascend. I really love the ending battle as well, the use of colors, lightning effects, butterfly textures, was just perfect. The animation was also really smooth, down to the small details of hair movements, such as when Nino and Alya are on the roller coaster, or when Chat Noir's hair gets wet.

The music was probably my least favorite part, just because I think Cristina Vee could've slayed it, and that the songs sounded kind of generic. But Oh My God, Chaos Will Reign had me bopping and replaying it. In fact, I'm listening to Chaos Will Reign and I'm Just Ken while writing this. It definitely gave me old Disney villain song vibes, mixed with the slightest hint of a Danny Elfman soundtrack. It just sounded so evil, but in a way that I can get behind. Keith Silverstein can actually sing, and that note at the end was wonderful. The vibrato gave me life. I was lowkey hoping Nooroo would stop talking so I could hear more. The chanting was awesome, and gave Friends on the Other Side vibes. I was (and still am) a big fan of villain songs, and this is a throwback to my theater kid days when I exclusively played villains and enjoyed it. Definitely overthrew the Hawkmoth Rap as my favorite Miraculous Ladybug song, but the Hawkmoth Rap is like, second place still. The only crime this song had was being too short. Release the ten hour cut.

Finally, aside from the glory that is Chaos Will Reign, I want to say that the two identity reveal scenes were amazing. I'll start off with Adrien and Marinette's, just because I care about that one the least. I think it was a creative way to go about it, with the masquerade masks. Fanfiction wins again. But I have so much to squeal about when it comes to the Adrien and Gabriel reveal. This version of Gabriel was definitely way more sympathetic than his show counterpart, despite committing atrocious acts. I actually wanted this Gabriel to get some redemption, and I think that bit of forgiveness from Adrien is just that. Let them have a good bond, PLEASE! The whole battle scene was just amazing, the fact that Hawkmoth was willing to do literally anything, and very nearly came close to winning. I knew he wasn't going to win, it's a kid's movie, but I was still on the edge of my seat and biting my nails.

I need both of these movies injected into my bloodstream ASAP.

Do I recommend them? Depends on your preferences. For Barbie, I can see why people wouldn't like it, it's campy(in a fun way), and it's anti-patriarchy and anti-matriarchy, which would make the misogynists and misandrists mad. But I think if you're open to a goofy time that will make you appreciate the women in your life, then give it a watch. It's definitely worth it.

For Miraculous Ladybug, it's a kid's movie, based on a show with a big following spanning years. I think it's something to watch if you're a fan, former or current, of the show. If you're just starting to watch Miraculous, it'll be a better watch if you sit through the show. But, it's a good movie, and still enjoyable for novice Miraculers.

I'm definitely watching these over and over again.

Chapter Three - New Rule

         Bianca and Chastity were sat on the field outside of the library, a blanket spread on the floor beneath them as they gossiped; it was chilly, but the sun was still shining down on them. It was a quarter past five, and Bianca swore she would leave for her home quarters any minute now. But the news of Casey Midge and Lawrence Saltwater's scandal in the girls' bathroom was just too juicy to wait for, and Chastity was a witness to the scene. Hogwarts was just brimming with gossip at any given day, truly a busy-body's paradise. "Apparently they've both got a month of detention - separately." Chastity laughed, the image of Sprout's face replaying in her mind as she'd opened the door to see Casey pressed against the sinks with Lawrence's hand up her blouse.

         "Oh Helga," Bianca snickered, "I reckon people are gonna be talking about this for weeks."

         "You just want to hope your uncle doesn't find out," Chastity said, pointing a manicured finger at her, "like he isn't crazy as it is."

         Bianca groaned and threw her head back. "I know, this is the last thing I need - I swear I'm the only girl in school not dating! How am I gonna get a date to the End of Year Ball with him breathing down my neck?”

         Chastity twirled a curl of dark hair with her finger, something she did when she was deep in thought. “Yeah, shame you can’t get around that somehow…”

         It wasn’t really as bad as she thought, Bianca acted like her uncle’s rule meant she would die alone; she didn’t see it now, but this rule was put in place to save her from not only heart-ache, but from boys like Lucius Malfoy too. A naive girl like Bianca would be played by someone like him like a puppet on a string until he got bored and tossed her aside for something new. But she couldn’t see that, she was blind to the warning signs, brainwashed by girly dramas that taught her that the right girl could tame a bad boy. But that was fantasy, Bianca just didn’t know it.

Closing the door quietly behind her, Bianca walked into her home hiding a smile. On her way back she and Chastity had seen Slytherin’s own group of purebloods, loitering in the hallways with their neatly pressed robes and perfect hair, looking to her like they belonged with the paintings on the walls. She would have stayed there all day at the receiving end of his flirts had Lucius asked, but she was far over an hour late for dinner and would no doubt be in a lot of trouble.

“Bianca.”

The girl turned around to find her guardian stood in the living room with his arms crossed. She’d need to tread lightly if she wanted things to go in her favour. “Hey Uncle Walt…”

“Don’t hey me, Bianca. Where have you been?”

(Y/N) was sat in the living room, feet on the coffee table and a book in front of her face, Bianca fumed to herself when she noticed the smirk she was hiding. “I was just with Chastity… we were talking is all.”

What a crappy excuse. Professor Stratford could see right through her – as could most people, really, she was such an open book – and scrunched his brows. “Just talking?”

She might have gotten away with batting her eyes and making a slightly better excuse, if she hadn’t tried to redirect the attention to the Slytherin smirking from across the room. “Well didn’t you hear the news? (Y/N) is gonna try out for the Quidditch team this year.” Her cousin’s smile quickly dropped.

Their carer spluttered. “Quidditch?” He exclaimed, turning to his daughter. “What’s this about Quidditch again? I thought you decided you were gonna be a Healer? Work in St. Mungos with--”

“No, you decided.” (Y/N) interrupted, rolling her eyes and turning away with her book.

Walter’s face flushed. “Oh so you’re just gonna give all that up – the apprenticeship I have waiting for you – for what? So you can do-- so you can play Quidditch?”

(Y/N) rolled her eyes again, turning back around and closing her book, shooting Bianca a cold, hard glare. “Ask Bianca who walked her home.”

The Professor shook his head and waved a finger at her. “No now don’t try to change the subj-- wai-- what? Who walked you home?” His mood quickly changed at the distraction, the blood draining from his face as he turned to his dear niece.

Bianca sucked in a breath, hardly giving her cousin a scowl. She gave one last attempt at batting her eyes. “Don’t get upset Uncle, but… well there’s this boy--”

“Who’s a poisonous basta--”

“And I think he might ask me--”

“GIRLS!” The man exclaimed, holding his hands out to them. He gestured for them to sit, which they did (begrudgingly). “There are two rules – just two rules, in this house.” He waved a finger at the both of them. “Rule Number One: No Dating Until You Graduate. Rule Number Two: No. Dating. Until. You. Graduate. That’s it!” He scolded, throwing his arms up.

Bianca threw her arms back and groaned. Not even bothering to look to her cousin for help. “That’s not fair!” She all but screamed, crossing her arms across her chest. “I barely have a social life – everyone in school is dating!”

“Oh don’t be dramatic,” he huffed, “(Y/N) doesn’t date.”

“And I don’t need to,” (Y/N) rolled her eyes. Picking up her book again, dismissing the notion entirely. Earning a fleeting look of approval from her father.

The Hufflepuff scoffed at the comment, sneering at her cousin. “Oh you’re such a freak.” She spat, flicking her hair behind her shoulder.

“Better than a dosey, attention seeking brat.”

“That’s enough!” Walter interrupted, holding his hands up to silence them. “You know what, I see how this is going to go.” He said, gesturing for them to both sit still. “New rule: Bianca can date…” he started, watching Bianca’s face lighten up and (Y/N)’s twist up, “when (Y/N) does.” with that he turned and went to his desk by the window to get to marking some homework. Bianca’s face had never fallen faster. “What?” She exclaimed, ignoring (Y/N)’s satisfied look, standing up to argue her case. “But she’s a freak! What if she never dates?” “Well then you’ll never date.” Walter said, a pleased expression crossing his face. Then collected his papers and scrolls, and excused himself to his study.

Okay but is anyone else thinking about how at the end of the movie, Sasha is wearing pink in the real world after we’d only ever seen her in all black and she claimed to ‘hate barbie’. it’s just reminding me of how when you get to a certain age as a girl, you think you’re not allowed to like pink anymore; you get made fun of for it, you pretend you don’t like it because being seen as ‘girly’ is all of a sudden ‘embarassing’ and ‘weak’.

But when Sasha begins to help all the barbies get themselves back, she’s in full pink (not to mention a matching outfit with several other women/barbies) literally a representation of many different women coming together to fight against the very thing that oppresses us all. I don’t know, it just makes me emotional to think that a young girl went into a world she used to love but thought she was supposed to hate now, and she met a bunch of amazing women older than her who are never seen as weak for being ‘girly’ or loving pink and she came out like ‘actually, I can wear and like whatever tf I want, my femininity is power, not a weakness’ and I just think that’s so beautiful 🥹she wore pink in barbie land with all the other barbies and her mother, and it was as if she had a moment of ‘oh, it’s actually really badass to be a woman, no matter what form. i want to be a part of this and not be ashamed’

The whole thing of just reclaiming the youthful and carefree femininity that you had as a child that got brainwashed out of you, is so heart wrenching and beautiful and omfg this movie fucked me up.

And then the whole contrast of barbie wearing more muted tones in the real world but keeping a dash of pink is just like 😭yeah, you’re going to grow up, and things will change, including yourself, but that little girl that you once were, she’s always going to be a part of you, and you should wear her with pride

Oh yeah one lore thing is Kyoko's dad didn't feel like dealing with her so she got booted to reserve course, so she signed on for the Kamakura project, confident he'd have to confront her, BUT HE DIDN'T and the scientist guys realised who she was SECONDS before they were starting the surgery so they locked her in the Kamakura cell, grabbed a random reserve course kiddin who was unlucky enough to be passimg by (haijime) and he still got Kamakurad

He was then tossed into class 78 (i think its 78) immediately so they could deal with him meanwhile Kyoko was told to stay put til they could get her dad to come by and Komaeda (hes into despair bc his luck barely lets him feel it and that pissed him off) found her while Kamakura hunting and convinced her and her mad detective skillz to join his and Ryoko's (they aren't brothers, Komaeda just found him one day and was like I'm keeping this loser lol) despair cause, in order to get revenge on her dad for child abandonment.

Kyoko didn't know the despairing would go as far as it did, and when it did Komaeda brainwashed her with Mukuro's video.

Oh also those three guys from the anime yknow chisa and the ceo bitch and the homophobic homosexual swap with candy girl and her simp and the chemistry girlie not necessarily in that order

I'm just gonna copy and paste my fb defense of Haymitch here since it'll likely get taken down. I went a little off the rails (my entire extended family has to wake up and see this)

TW: If you haven't read the series, it's freaking brutal. I reference(not super detailed but mentioned) a lot of really horrible things that are CANNON. Such as: SA and other abuse, eugenics, torture, death, murder/execution, alcohol, brainwashing

-Haymitch knowing before Katniss that they're torturing Peeta and trying to wear down 13 into saving him, but no one listens to him because hes not the barbie doll they want (mj)

-Haymitch sticking up for Effie in the entire series even though she's portrayed through Katniss' eyes as shallow and unlikable. He's smart enough to know it's not her fault and that she's ALSO been brainwashed to some degree(especially in catching fire)

-Haymitch comforting Finnick after describing the horrific SA he experienced at the hands of the capital (mockingjay)

-Haymitch trying at every corner to point out how helpful Peeta is so that 13 doesn't treat him like a traitor and harm him

And yeah he's hard af on Katniss, and if you have poor reading comprehension skills, you might call it sexism. Here's the real tea:

-Katniss is an overall hostile and mistrusting person. Peeta has never done anything to seriously harm her and so she always suspects him to harm her. Its obvious within the first 20 minutes of meeting her. So Haymitch reflects the same hostility. Its the same thing she does with Buttercup. They hiss at each other and then go about their business because in the end they have their own shit to do.

-heres why Haymitch's appearance is so monumentally important: he has the "Seam look" like Katniss. And if you haven't read the books, the wealthy people blonde hair/blue eyes while the poor people from the Seam have dark curly hair and dark skin. Which is horrifying and implies the government uses eugenics to separate the classes, but ALSO, Haymitch having the same "look" as Katniss is 110% a parallel to show they both speak the same nonverbal language. He gives Katniss the gifts because they both already know nothing is free. Peeta, on the other hand, probably wouldn't be able to put that together. Not that one had it worse than the other (dudes mom was wicked abusive), just showing that Haymitch and Katniss basically only speak aloud for other people's sake.

If you're a Katniss girlie, you're legally obligated to also like my dood. They're direct fucking parallels. You're supposed to see this traumatized shell of a person and think "holy shit that poor girl is gonna turn into that."

Like Katniss and Rue | Haymitch and Maysilee. Same exact situation. You dont even need to know all the backstory of Maysilee if you know what happens with the first pair.

Katniss is a standoffish dickhead and people applaud her for it (likely because of the manic pixie dreamgirl effect), but Haymitch does it and its a problem???? "Katniss has her moments of likability though." AND???? SO DOES HAYMITCH. as stated above.

I finished Coromon again and the newer story overall was worth the replay. The more noticable differences show up a bit later on, and there's a LOT more visual improvements than I remember. I dont know if i like the newer story better tho. I also have some huge gripes w the villains, and apparently the main gripe stems from FALSE memories from the original story? I watched some playthrus of the old story to see the differences and theres whole ass scenes that I remember experiencing that just DID NOT happen??? 😭 Like idk if the devs did some smaller story updates between then and what I played or WHAT, but I have a memory of the titans of Velua talking w the Crimsonite titan down in the core of the planet and being like "why are you trying to take over our planet? why didnt u just ask to join us or ask for help?" (i distinctly remember a line from one of the titans saying "WHY didnt you just ASK us?" bc i thought it was so fucking funny) and I thought that they chose to let that new titan stay and the seven of them would work together. Not just killing 6v1 killing the fucker.

In the new story the Crimsonite titan doesnt even seem to EXIST as the Wubbonians exclusively just use the Crimsonite on their own and the only mention of a titan is some human npcs theorizing that there COULD be other titans for new elements. Chalchiu and her brothers are just like "ok girlies, time to wipe clean this world of every ounce of this Crimsonite shit. eradicate with EXTREME prejudice ♥️" and they just rebuild the whole ass world. Like HUH? What abt the Wubbonians? Your character even asks Chalchiu abt them and if they'll be ok w/out being exposed to their element and she's basically like "lmao too bad. not our worlds problem". like YEAH i GUESS thats true, but cmon man 😭 The Wubbonians in the new story dont even mention ANYTHING abt their home planet either. No Wubbonia. No Great Cataclym. Nothing. Its like the story took a hard pivot from "these aliens are looking for a new home and are trying to claim this one bc they and their titan are desperate and not thinking very rationally or ethically abt it" to "yeah these guys r just pure evil now and are here for galactic conquest" or sm and then at the very end and post game u get some hints that MAYBE something else is going on.

Epescially now that the devs changed it from "dark magic" to an actual element called "Crimsonite", it makes even MORE sense to follow the story where the Wubbonians are just a people who are desperately searching for a new home because their home world is either in or rapidly approaching an apocalypse. And how maybe out of the desperation for survival, their titan poured all of its stat points into charisma in order to persuade and brainwash everyone and everything it can.

Also i lowkey kinda liked how the Wubbonians in the og story like... didnt really do anything? I liked how they didnt even try to stop you in Ixqun. You expected a huge fight and they just... stand there. Point and laugh at you. Theyre far too busy staring at Crimsonite rocks and daydreaming abt how they won and that they finally saved their world. Standing there watching their titan do all the work, and subsequently get their ass kicked and STILL do nothing. Like yes kings, go, give us nothing. Just like how your titan gives up and accepts death immediately after being defeated.

ok so im gonna rant bc i don’t even fully know my feelings on m*ry but ig we’ll talk about it. i didn’t know how much the fandom hated her wow but ok.

so first off, ms. girly gets revived after 33 yrs and all that hitting you at once, I totally understood that. I understood that everything was just :O for her and I wanted Sam and Dean to chill a lil. Like they wanted her to just jump into being their mom when she literally only knows them as children. So I was all about acknowledging that.

But I think the first time that it started clicking for me that she was :/ is when she called Dean and said “i WANT to be there for you” and yet???? she never tried???? she was literally never there for them. i feel like dean didn’t try to understand her and she didn’t try to understand them. but yeah i was definitely 🤨 right around then.

And I totally understand that she was brainwashed and that affected her too but like???? she willingly was gonna keep herself in her own mind had dean not gone in there. Like she couldn’t deal with her own mistake that bad. Which reminds me: why tf did she make that deal for crusty ass John Winchester????? bffr. And why that deal??? Like I get she didn’t have dean or Sam yet but if you knew for facts you made this deal the least you could’ve done was not have kids like girl. So yeah, she did a lot of shit that was like ?????

I just think she wasn’t emotionally connected to Sam and Dean as they were so she just went and did whatever. Like I get falling for the Brits’ bs but like Sam had literally gotten tortured like 5 secs before she’s like “well I guess I’ll just start hunting w these guys!!!!” Like yes, she thought that all of her actions were for the greater good for her sons, but she just refused to really accept and take responsibility for the fact that she is the reason they’re like this. Idk I did not care about Mary like at all bc w/o her role in the Winchester dynamic, her as a character is just boring. (The actress was also pretty bland imo) I do like the stuff her character brings up like acknowledging Dean’s deep seated trauma and the responsibility he’s had and just in general like Sam making excuses for her bc he’s never known her and Dean having expectations for her. Idk it’s very interesting but yeah, her as a mother is definitely not it and very questionable. intent does not trump over the harm done.
