zeal and ardor: described as a mix of african-american spirituals and black metal. try devil is fine, you aint coming back, wake of a nation or church burns

bloodywood: indian folk metal, literally nobody is doing it like them. recently featured in monkey man (2024), try chakh le, yaad or dana dan

stromae: if youve never heard any of his songs WHAT ARE YOU DOING..... incredible lyricist, described as a blend of hip hop/electronic. papaoutai made the rounds on tumblr a while back, but you should also try santé and l'enfer

alamat: pinoy pop. a youtube commenter described them as sounding like 2nd gen kpop which probably also explains why i took a shine to them LMAO, notable for the amount of filipino culture on display and the diversity thereof (singing in different languages, themes). first heard them thru kasmala either here or on twitter lmao, try aswang or maharani

andy bull: alt-pop. a lot of poppy and upbeat songs with a melancholic undertone imo. an australian artist, try it's all connected or keep on running

cosmo sheldrake: electronic, wikipedia also lists him as folktronica and baroque pop. you may have heard the song come along on an apple ad - hes known for sampling sounds from nature. pliocene for example features sounds from endangered ecosystems.

if you like cosmo sheldrake, you might like hidden orchestra (electronica, ambient). also making use of field recordings, i really love the archipelago mixtape but its a hard sell at about an hour lmao. if you like the following song then i implore you to give it a go

son lux: experimental, you may have heard from them in the entire soundtrack for everything everywhere all at once (!!!!!). try dangerous, dream state (brighter night) or live another life.

ammar 808: electronic/world fusion, also behind bargou 08 (folk rock you should also listen to). i just cant get ain essouda out of my head, but i also love geeta duniki

miyavi: j-rock, used to be a visual kei artist. these days he might be known more for anime openings like flashback (kokkoku) or other side (id:invaded), or for work like snakes in arcane (or actually inspiring and voicing a character in it), but ive always been partial to his early work like sukkyanen myv or ashita, genki ni naare

the guilty gear soundtracks and im so serious im not fucking joking. different kinds of rock and metal and all sorts of influences put in, a genuine labor of love. xrd and earlier games are mainly instrumental with some vocal tracks (try give me a break or big blast sonic), while strive pretty much always includes vocals (of course i need to rec rock parade, but also try requiem. its genuinely hard for me to pick and choose lmao)

triple j like a version is when the radio station triple j brings in artists and has them do a cover of a song (artists choice). i liked denzel curry's cover of bulls on parade and flume's shooting stars (video for this one is incredible, man had a vision you just have to stick it out), but you get a lot of interesting interpretations like the wombats' running up that hill, gordi's in the end or, infamously. the wiggles' elephant

i am a jewish player of food fantasy and had a huge falling out w a group wrt bfc and her being a huge nazi expy and what with the new information that elex just straight up deleted her from the game, im stuck here laughing my ass off. if she wasn't based on the third reich, they shouldn't have any worries, but they took her out anyways. guess it looks like my disgust of her was absolutely warranted and the people who told me that it wasn't like that need to grow the fuck up.

1-5 for Zenril

Hello this is… part one of nine, because my DM has no chill! (love you tho)

And some of these questions are gonna have vague details, cause if I wait until I name every member of Zenril’s family, well. This is just. Never getting done.

EDITED because I have names for his immediate family now!

1. Does your character have siblings or family members in their age group? Which one are they closest with?

Zenril’s got one little sister! She’s like… idk 5ish years younger than him, so she’s a teenager now. She likes music and has my butterfly aesthetic, cause I gotta give my butterfly aesthetic to someone and it’s clearly not Zenril, Prince of the Fashion Trashheap. He pretty much views her as Adorable Kid Sister and I keep meaning to have him buy souvenirs for her and forgetting. I like to imagine their dynamic is like… they are delighted to see each other for the first three days that Zenril is home from college/adventuring, and then they start remembering that oh, yeah, siblings can be annoying, and also you changed a bit in the past few months cause life be that way, so that’s weird. I don’t think it ever gets too tense, though.

Edit: Her name is Astera (Stera for short) and she was probably shorter than Zenril when he left for school, but isn’t anymore. Her hair refuses to grow out past her shoulders before turning into mist though, so he’s still got that on her.

I have no idea about cousins or whatnot, partially because I grew up only seeing my cousins like once every couple years, so it just… does not occur to me to do extended family most of the time. (also I can’t come up with names for his immediate family SO.) Gonna say he’s potentially got cousins, but isn’t close with any of em.

2. What is your character’s relationship with their mother like? 

Zenril’s mom is a gardener/groundskeeper/landscaper, and Zenril spent a lot of his childhood time with her (when he wasn’t in the library). (This is how I’m justifying his Nature proficiency tbh.) They’re pretty close! She def encouraged him to grab his interests and run with them, cause like.. she’s either an air genasi who decided she really liked having her hands in the dirt, or an earth genasi who fell madly in love with an air genasi. And even in a setting where there’s no “ooh races are expected to always be This Way,” I feel like both of those are things where she had to ignore a little voice in the back of her head saying “this might not work” and go “gonna MAKE this work cause I WANT it to.”

Edit: Have decided that she is def an earth genasi, and her name is Ava, and she is where Zenril gets his lack of height from.

3. What is your character’s relationship with their father like? 

Zenril’s dad is a chef, and he and Zenril are on good terms, but I think Zenril was a lot more interested in being outside and memorizing minutia about plants than he was in making food. Also his mom was more likely to just tell stories as she worked and his dad was more likely to hand him a knife and give him something to do.

Edit: his name is Kainen, and he’s a full foot taller than his son. This probably means less in air geansi families, cause Zenril can levitate, but still.

4.  Has your character ever witnessed something that fundamentally changed them? If so, does anyone else know?

That’s… difficult to answer, cause I haven’t, like. Tried to come up with Defining Moments™ from his childhood, so I can’t pull from there. And there might be moments from the campaign that counted, but I don’t want to share that cause it’s more fun for me if I can just suddenly have Zenril do a thing as a result of secret character development. (Although those kinds of moments so far are less “fundamentally changed him” and more “brought out part of his personality that these people hadn’t accessed yet” so idk if they count anyway)

5. On an average day, what can be found in your character’s pockets?

Sand, apparently. Thank you, Scholar’s Pack, for giving Zenril pocket sand. Also whatever little bits of trash he accumulates throughout the day because he grew up with the, like, servant class, so he’s not gonna litter like a fucking animal, thank you.

i want to take that response you wrote for sengo and just rub it all over my face, i love it so much, sengo is such an important character to me for ALL OF THOSE REASONS and it's so hard to find people who respect and understand the beauty of his character without just going towards the "thot brigade" concept of him. yeah???????? nikkari is doing ok and appreciated properly even being done justice by yuhki kamatani themselve but kikkou is so much more than moaning and bondage ect but you know it’s still because of the lack of anything of any characterization in the actuall app like i’m sure the day kikkou gets a stage or musical actor it will change but then again that’s only a natural consequence because literally no content no story so it will just be first impression until there is

See I actually can’t stand the candy hearts. not so much because of the texture I guess, but because of the actual taste of them. Like they’re TOO trash.

Like at least smarties are like, sweet and sour chalk. Candy Hearts are just like... straight up chalk.

Part six is out of order again because 1. they’re good questions and 2. having a chunk hanging out at the end of the list does not spark joy. Having a solid chunk done at the beginning and a solid chunk done at the end sparks joy.

Parts one, two, three, four, five

41. Does your character feel that they deserve to have what they want, whether it be material or abstract, or do they feel they must earn it first?

Not sure how much of it is “Zenril feels like he must earn things” and how much of it is “Zenril thinks having things handed to you takes all the fun out of it.” He feels that he deserves the opportunity to earn things, anyway. If that makes sense.

42. Has your character ever had a parental figure who was not related to them?

Not parental, but Quasky/Soanso (final name still tbd) is kind of a grandparental figure? Like, your grandpa who’s opinion you care about and who wants what’s best for you, but you maybe have different ideas about what is best for you so it’s awkward and you just... try to avoid that topic of conversation and not disappoint him too much.

43. Has your character ever had a dependent figure who was not related to them?

Zenril has never had a dependent figure and probably should not have one for many years.

44. How easy or difficult is it for your character to say “I love you?” Can they say it without meaning it?

It’s not difficult, so much as... uncommon? Weird and awkward to add people to the list of People Zenril Loves. Zenril is... not... super in touch with what his emotions are doing at any given time. I don’t think he can say it without meaning it because 1. why and 2. pretending to feel an emotion just increases the awkward. 

45. What does your character believe will happen to them after they die? Does this belief scare them?

uuuhhh HEY ADRIAN I need to know that the local cosmology models are kthx write me a whole essay plz I love this shit

Until I get that and know what the actual academic view on death and souls is: Probably believes death is like... your soul gets yeeted off the Prime Material plane and lands on whatever plane it has the most affinity to. I don’t think he’s scared, because if nothing else, it’s gonna be very interesting to see where he ends up and learn how that plane works. But, again, that’s based on my understanding of Great Wheel cosmology and I don’t think Alverra subscribes to my favorite model of D&D planes. So idk. Either way, leaving the Prime Material is always gonna be an adventure.

Lina Inverse/Edward Elric, 26

okay, full disclosure: I’m not caught up with the FMA manga, and I haven’t watched either 03 or Brotherhood in aaages, and I probably need a refresher on Slayers, too. also this is probably at least a little OOC but WHO CARES LET’S GO

Lina Inverse had been with them for all of a week. Edward still wasn’t precisely sure where she came from -clearly not Xing or Ishbal, and Lina’s explanation of her homeland being “encased in a magic shield created by a dark lord up until, like, a couple months ago” didn’t really help matters. But he knew this much: she was very full of herself, ate like she had three stomachs, and could fly.

Edward was determined to find out how.

So, they had come to an arrangement: Edward would teach Lina alchemy, while Lina would pass on her so-called magical knowledge to Edward. And somewhere along the way they’d try and get Lina back home (wherever the hell it might be.)

So far the magic lessons had been a bust - for all of Lina’s persistence on tapping into your inner energy and thinking explodey things and worrying mentions of invoking the powers of dread gods Edward hadn’t been able to cast so much as a spark. He might’ve thought it was all bunk if he hadn’t seen her launch an arrow made of ice just by speaking a couple of words and posing like an archer.

The alchemy lessons, on the other hand, were going swimmingly.

Perhaps too swimmingly.

“When are you guys gonna give me something hard?” Lina asked, with a huff. She was tying her hair back, the red strands frizzing from sweat and the heat of the day, as she surveyed her latest transmutation - a newly-repaired wagon that one of the local farmers had brought by for the Elrics to fix. Edward had to admit, it was a good job -the broken axle looked good as new, the seam where the material had knit barely visible.

“We have been giving you difficult things,” Alphonse said. “For a beginner, anyway. You’ve gotten really far in a week.”

Lina preened. “Well, naturally.” She frowned, and muttered, “still can’t figure out that no-circle thing, though.”

“There’s alchemists who work their entire lives and never figure it out,” Edward said. “And it took me…” He paused, thinking of how to phrase it, “making some very stupid decisions.”

Lina cast him and Alphonse a curious look, glancing at Edward’s automail arm and Alphonse’s body, but let it go.

“I’d still like something harder,” she said.

Edward shrugged. “Fair enough. Help me get this wagon out of the way so we don’t break it again.”

Soon the Rockbell’s yard was cleared, the wagon now sitting beside a nearby storage shed. Alphonse retrieved some chalk they had waiting on the porch, and cleared the patch of yard they had been using for transmutation exercises.

“All right, I’m going to make something, and I want you to figure out how you would go about it,” Edward said. “You don’t have to recreate it exactly -find a solution that works for you.”

Lina shrugged. “Shouldn’t be too hard.”

Edward had to fight back a retort (he wouldn’t, normally, he certainly didn’t spare them for Winry. But then Winry didn’t often make things explode). Lina had taken to alchemy with ease, true, and she was remarkably talented with it. But she was also remarkably smug about it, and it grated on every single one of Edward’s nerves.

Maybe he could fix that.

Edward gave the dust of the yard a cursory sweep, kicking aside a few spare screws that had somehow made their way outside from the Rockbell’s workshop. He paused, turning over the general idea of what form he wanted in his head until he got something he was satisfied with.

A clap as his hands met, and then blue sparks as he touched the ground, the earth rising beneath his hands, twisting and taking form. The effect was near-instantaneous, but Edward saw it almost in slow-motion, watching the details of the object coalesce into being as he thought them.

And then, with a crack, it was done. Alphonse sighed beside him.

“Brother, you really have awful taste.”

“Oh, please,” Edward said. “It’s awesome and you know it.”

It was, indeed, awesome -a statue of a dragon, well over Edward’s height, posed as if it was from a coat of arms (albeit a coat of arms clearly designed by a fifteen year old.) Huge, tusk-like fangs curled up from its snarling mouth, front claws reaching out towards an unseen enemy. Its wings were spread wide, while the rest of its body rolled and dipped in and out of the dust, its spade-ended tail curled around the rest of its form. Sure, maybe it was a little overwrought, but it definitely looked cool.

Edward turned towards Lina and said with a smirk, “You think you can do better?”

Edward had expected a boast, or a quip, but Lina said neither. Her expression was oddly... thoughtful, index finger pressed to her lips, opposite hand resting on her hips. After a moment she held a hand out to Alphonse.

“Chalk, please.”

Alphonse nodded, placing a small piece in her outstretched palm. Lina stood for a moment, tapping the chalk against her chin, before walking to a patch of earth beside Edward’s dragon, kneeling down, and starting to draw her transmutation circle. Edward watched as she carefully and methodically drew out the inner and outer rings, the runes and anchor points, watched as she would stop every so often to check her work, alter or rub out and rewrite a rune before moving on.

After about ten minutes she stood up and nodded to herself, satisfied.

Sparks again, the earth within the transmutation circle rising and twisting, and then -

“Oh. Wow.”

Lina’s dragon was about the same size of Edward’s -but less like something taken off of a church with some highly unorthodox ideas about gargoyles and more like a sketch from life. Wings pulled taut, jaws open wide as if it were about to breathe fire, its body coiled and twisted over itself. The only thing missing was the feet -Lina seemed to have elected to make both the feet and legs into a loosely detailed support for it, making it seem like the dragon was still rising from the earth, and would finally burst forth at any minute.

It also, for some reason, had cartoonish, googly eyes.

“I was wrong,” Alphonse said, almost to himself, “you both have awful taste.”
