Hiii!
I'm a huge fan, and eternally grateful to you for leading me to His Valet 🙏🏻
I'm just coming off a serious Lisa Kleypas high and i'm not sure where to go next. I tend to like my romance angsty and historical. What would you suggest?
Thank you for everything you do!
Omg no need to thank me! 'Tis a fun hobby for me (and who knows, maybe eventually I'll publish a book or get into book marketing... the first is a dream, the second possibly a more practical dream given my professional background lol).
Needless to say, if you haven't read any other LaViolette books, she's probably one of my favorite Kleypas readalikes. Less Victorian Decadence (though they're amazing) because of the super high heat and queerness, plus the tendency towards non-monogamy or at least group shenanigans, but her other books like the Bellamys ESPECIALLY read like higher heat Kleypas to me a lot of the time. You probably know this—but the Bellamys give me "edgier Hathaways" vibes and they're all good so far (though Hyacinth and Selina particularly).
Primo historical angst who I consider from a similar like... field? As Kleypas? Is of course Elizabeth Hoyt. All of her books are solid to incredible, and Maiden Lane is just one of those series that I feel EVERY historical romance fan should read. Imo, they're best read in order (though full disclosure, I've yet to read book 1 even though I own it, and I'm kind of holding off because once I read it I'm done with ML and like Kleypas she hasn't published in a while...) but my top five would be Scandalous Desires (Irish river pirate Charming Mickey/moralistic Quaker widow Silence), Thief of Shadows (one of my all time favorites, virgin hero Winter with society widow Isabel), Duke of Midnight (craziest duke ever, Duke Batman Maximus/waaaay too smart for him Artemis), Dearest Rogue (the jaded former man of the law James with the woman he's guarding, Phoebe, who happens to be blind), and Sweetest Scoundrel (ultimate "rogue on the outside sweetheart on the inside" Asa and the uptight but secretly traumatized Eve).
Lorraine Heath, but of course! Just recommended her London's Greatest Lovers trilogy (available for $1.99 as a kindle bundle) and ESPECIALLY Waking Up With the Duke, but she honestly has several I would consider masterpieces/top favorites. Besides that one, I'd especially recommend:
--The Earl Takes All, a modern classic, also known as Gorilla Twins, one of the wildest books I've ever read
--When the Duke Was Wicked, aka (around these parts) (my blog, nowhere else) Rum on Lips, a beautiful widower rake book
--Between the Devil and Desire, the Jack Dodger and Olivia book, a FABULOUS interclass romance (though he's rich, don't forget it) with a hero who is perrrrrfect for Derek Craven girlies (Lovingdon from the above book is a little more similar to Sebastian, if Sebastian was actually terminally depressed and totally in denial about how hard he's falling for HIS redheaded heroine... I actually don't think St. Vincent really was that hard on the denial front once he was in it for real)
Joanna Shupe, of course! Her Fifth Avenue Rebels series is my favorite. I'd say she generally goes a *little* lighter on the angst than Kleypas, but it really depends on the book and they always have angst of some kind, and often a lot of groveling. I'd argue that her angstiest book that I've read is The Duke Gets Even, another all time favorite of mine. It's really pretty daring for the genre, imo, re: the source of the angst. Buuuut I would also recommend reading the series up to that in order for MAX gutpunch, and all the books are good to great.
I haven't read as much Jeannie Lin as I should have by now (just two books so far) but OOOOH The Dragon and The Pearl is so good. So angsty. There's such an anguished love confession in this one. Shoot it into my veins.
Sarah MacLean is definitely someone you can tell has been influenced by Lisa, and she writes great angst. My angst favorites of hers are A Rogue by Any Other Name and Day of the Duchess (the latter of which is another daring one).
Monica McCarty writes great angst—her Highland Guard series is medieval, but it definitely has the Kleypas-type heroes. And you get a LOT of like... "he doesn't love me" angst, some "we're on opposite sides" angst, some "we have beef and it still isn't over" angst throughout the series, which is really pretty consistent (I say as someone who still has a few books left).
Jennifer Ashley's Mackenzie brothers books are SINGULARLY angsty in the best way, and give big Kleypas vibes to me. The Duke's Perfect Wife is an all time favorite of mine, made me cry, and is best read after the first three in order, but they're ALL great.
And I mean... I have to recommend Princess by Gaelen Foley, a recent favorite of mine that is SOOOOO deliciously angsty. The longing! The betrayal! The hero wants to get himself killed, assassinating Napoleon FOR HER (and also because he highkey hates himself). The Duke is also super good, and VERY angsty.

Curious that they added a navel. I do not think I see it elsewhere. But I guess it follows along with its loose source inspiration.
In 1951, the United States Code of Practices for Television Broadcasters came into force, which, besides other things, prohibited female navel exposure on American television. During the 1960s, Barbara Eden was not allowed to show her navel on the NBC TV show I Dream of Jeannie (1965–70). Her pants had to be worn above the navel, which became ineffective. After a few frames of her navel exposure went unnoticed, they decided to use fabric and skin-colored makeup to conceal her navel. Her costume became low-rise (without censorship) in 1985 and in 2013, 81-year-old Eden attended the Life Ball event in Vienna dressed in the same costume of I Dream of Jeannie but revealing her navel.
They tried to get the navel on via a guest appearance on Laugh In, though as I now scan the videos to see when and where they pan over to Goldie Hawn's as they move about painted slogans on her body -- I am not sure you saw her belly button too much either.
Tumblr media
In the manner Archie Comics is following trendlines -- and best I can see they do not add navels to old comic book stories without them -- and here I skip to the years issues of Betty and Veronica Summer Fun to mark deliniations. It appears that in 1968, they pop in and out and then when you skip over to 1969 -- there they are. Right there on the first page -- on a page analyzed in the scholarly work of Bart Beaty in his book Twelve Cent Archie:

If Ruqayya’s vessel happens to be a bottle at any given time, the default interior¹ is likely to look like Jeannie’s ( top 2 caps ; the light blue color scheme accented with gold, wrap-around seating, cushions, etc. )
I included caps of Jeannie II’s ( Jeannie’s wicked sister ) bottle interior for reference of what it might look like without the wrap-around seating & just cushions.
Caps by me from the second post-series film I Still Dream of Jeannie (1991).
Modified Bottle Interior
Given that this bottle was custom made for Ruqayya by the Almighty One, she has altered it to suit her wants and needs. For instance, she has modified the wrap around seating to be 'optional'.
Also, she has made it so that the interior boundaries of the space have been connected to a pocket dimension of her own creation. She can change this pocket dimension to anything she wants, be it a beach on an island, a mansion, a palace, a house in the mountains, whatever.
Visual examples from movies and media:
Mansion from The Great Gatsby (2013)

Palace from Aladdin (2019)

Will Smith Signs New Record Deal
by Cedric ‘BIG CED’ Thornton July 27, 2024 This news comes after he performed his latest song, ‘You Can Make It,’ at the BET Awards. A month after The Fresh Prince performed at the BET Awards, there was news that the rapping actor signed a new recording deal. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Will Smith, who started his career as a rapper, signed with a new record label, SLANG. SLANG, a label started by veteran music executive Rene McLean. This news comes after Smith performed his latest song, “You Can Make It,” at the BET Awards on June 30. He did the song with the Sunday Service Choir, Kirk Franklin, and Fridayy. The upcoming project will be his first one in almost 20 years since he released “Lost and Found” in 2005. He started his hip-hop career in Philadelphia with his DJ, Jazzy Jeff, after releasing the song “Girls Ain’t Nothing But Trouble” (which sampled the theme song from the Barbara Eden/Larry Hagman-led sitcom “I Dream of Jeannie”) in 1986 before debuting their first album, “Rock the House” in 1987. Smith, as The Fresh Prince, was the first rapper ever to be awarded a Grammy in 1989. McLean, also a partner and founding advisor of music and entertainment company Influence Media Partners, released a written statement about the new record label. “I’m proud to lead SLANG’s efforts to partner with quality artists and invest in their growth, regardless of genre or where they are in their respective careers. In a quickly changing music industry, SLANG artists will be surrounded by a team of like-minded strategists who will stop at nothing to further their trajectory and help them meet their goals. Our commitment to culture comes first, and we consider our SLANG roster family,” McLean said. Smith is coming off a successful release of his latest film, the third sequel to the “Bad Boys” series. The film Bad Boys: Ride or Die was released on June 7 and has grossed $151 million at the domestic box office. Smith also recorded a song for the soundtrack to the movie with Sean Paul, “Light Em Up. EDITOR:  Church and friends can challenge us for new year changes.  I knew a lady who lived by the word “Joy” for a whole year.  She had pictures, plaques, and scriptures around her home that included the word “Joy.”  A sweet message at church yesterday challenged me to pick a word to help me through life’s changes, challenges, and the insane ways of this world.  “Trust” is the word.    Proverbs 3:5 ( KJV) says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.”  LMartin
Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday is a federal holiday recognized the third Monday in January. Jottings from Miz Jeannie  by Jeannie Barnwell                Harvard and Plagiarism I am not one to brag, but did you know that I taught English at HARVARD for 18 years! (That's Harvard on the Highway-- or what we called Greenville Technical College, situated on HWY 291!) Here is the LEAST that a student needs to know about NOT COMMITTING PLAGIARISM. 1) If you use another person's exact words, you need to put quotes around the words.  Then in parenthesis, list the name of your source referring your reader to your Works Cited page for complete information. 2) If you are paraphrasing the words of another person, then follow this example: Jesse Watters said that Claudia Gay's dismissal as Harvard's president was Not Racism; it WAS racism when Harvard hired her.      Happy  2024!!!! I Dream of Daniel
by t_time
Johnny’s wandering along the beach when he finds the bottle. It’s purple, ornate and completely out of place among the beer cans and wrappers littering the beach, but he still wouldn’t think twice about it if it didn’t roll back up to his hand after he pushed it away.
--- Or, instead of meeting at the beach party and fighting, Johnny finds and accidentally unleashes genie Daniel, who starts following him around, talking about how he wants to please Johnny.
