I simultaneously want to live a lifestyle where I can regularly afford to EXTRAVAGANTLY tip service workers, whilst also living in a world where topping culture is not normal or necessary because minimum wage laws do their damn jobs and actually allow all workers to comfortably support their selves & families without relying on the arbitrary "generosity" of entitled customers
#not a shitpost#anyway tipping is not the norm in many countries bc employers are held to a higher accountability re: liveable wages#and in the U.S. specifically tipping as a cultural norm is DIRECTLY descended from post-civil-war racism#I highly recommend googling that shit bc there are MUCH better sources than my dumb little blog#but basically i believe it arose in industries that employed (exploited) a large newly unenslaved black workforce#by offering service jobs that paid unethically low wages (to post-emancipation black americans with VERY few options/resources)#with the excuse that 'tips' would 'reward' good performance and make up the wage difference to 'deserving' workers#while actually it was a control tactic that enabled racist white customers to financially abuse underpaid black employees#keeping in mind that many white americans at this point resented the new legal right of former slaves to earn money and hold jobs at all#ANYWAY I'm rambling and I don't have a list of sources that's just a summary of stuff I remember reading#I apologize for any accidental misinformation this is why i normally stick to dumb clown biology horror posts#(the nose is the fruiting fungal body. honk it thrice to Release The Spores)#...no wait wait wait i thought i was done BUT:#it's no coincidence that tipping culture has continued predominantly in industries more likely to employ women and people of color#and people without access to higher education. because TIPPING IS FUNDAMENTALLY A FORM OF FINANCIAL ABUSE MEANT TO ENFORCE SOCIAL HIERARCHY#ok whew i think im done#oh P.S. LEAVE A FUCKING TIP for people who provide you services in industries where tipping is (unfortimatrly) standard#Yes even if they do a crap job. TIPS AREN'T A 'BONUS' for 'good performance' they're literally something exploited workers need to SURVIVE#you should be able to screw up occasionally at work without being terrified of being able to pay this month's bills#Humans are human. Which means we are DEEPLY FLAWED and IMMINENTLY DESERVING OF DIGNITY AND COMPASSION.#There i did it i summarized my personal core theology nobody asked for. and in entirely too wordy a process okay i am going to BED

i like how when the fantasy genre gets Feminist it's still very often like:
-lightly misogynist fantasy setting as backdrop for plucky heroine who shows everyone that Girls Can Fight, with numerous 'huhhhh????????? a GIRL???????????????!!!!!!!" scenes (that might have been saying something new in like, the 80s latest) trying so hard to prove Girls Can Fight that you wonder why they arent just creating a setting where women have relative social equality to begin with.
-heavily misogynist fantasy setting as backdrop for story where the author ascribes misogyny to innate human sexual differences divorced from cultural construction (shockingly, 100% in line with exact ways western gender binary and womanhood is culturally constructed). heroine spends much time lamenting on this, having been directly imparted with the author's great wisdom on these matters. other women are mostly repressed or antagonistic to our heroine, who herself spends many paragraphs fantasizing about boring male leads due to author's beliefs about this being an innate physical drive and preoccupation of all women (which is lamented about). at absolutely no point is people sometimes having gay sex and relationships acknowledged as a thing that exists.
-the same as the above but author is approaching from a 'we are the daughters of witches you couldnt burn' kinda angle and is writing a manifesto against christianity and patriarchy that is more rigid and binaristic in its views on gender than an early middle ages christian peasant.

questions for fic writers
a collection of questions i, as a writer, would love to be asked !!!
1. What fic of yours would you recommend to someone who had never read any of your work? (In other words, what do you think is the best introduction to your fics?)
2. Go to your AO3 “Works” page, to the sidebar with all the filters, and click the drop-down arrow for “Additional Tags.” What are your top 3-5 most used tags? Do you think they accurately represent your writing habits?
3. What are some tropes or details that you think are very characteristic of your fics?
4. What detail in [insert fic] are you really proud of?
5. What do you wish someone would ask you about [insert fic]? Answer it now!
6. What's one fact about the universe of [insert fic] that you didn't get a chance to mention in the fic itself?
7. Any worldbuilding you're particularly proud of?
8. What song would make a great fic (to either write or read)?
9. How do you find new fic to read?
10. How do you decide what to write?
11. Are you partial to a certain character/pairing or are you more equal-opportunity? If you are partial to any character/pairing, why do you think that is?
12. Are there any tropes you used to dislike but have grown on you?
13. Are there any tropes you used to like but don't anymore?
14. Are there any tropes you would only read if written by a trusted friend or writer?
15. What's your favorite AU that you've written?
16. What's an AU you would love to read (or have read and loved)?
17. What highly specific AU do you want to read or write even though you might be the only person to appreciate it?
18. If you wrote a sequel to [insert fic], what would it involve?
19. If you wrote a spin-off of [insert fic], what would it involve?
20. If you wrote a prequel to [insert fic], what would it involve?
21. If you wrote a “missing scene” in [insert fic], what would it be?
22. Who is your favorite character in [insert fic] and why?
23. What's a trope, AU, or concept you've never written, but would like to?
24. Are there any easter eggs in [insert fic], and if so, what are they?
25. What other websites or resources do you use most often when you write?
26. Would you rather write a fic that had no dialogue or one that was only dialogue?
27. How long did it take to write [insert fic]? Describe the process.
28. Does anyone read your fics before you post them? If so, who?
29. What songs would be (or are) on a playlist for [insert fic]? Explain your choices if you want!
30. Have you ever written something that was out of your comfort zone? If so, what was it, and how did it affect your approach to writing fic thereafter?
31. What's your ideal fic length to write?
32. What's your ideal fic length to read?
33. If you write chaptered fics, what's your ideal chapter length to write? Is it different from your ideal chapter length to read?
34. What aspects of your writing are inspired by/taken from your real life?
35. What aspects of your writing are completely unlike your real life?
36. Do you visualize what you read/write?
37. Promote one of your own “deep cut” fics (an underrated one, or one that never got as much traction as you think it deserves!). What do you like about it?
38. Did any of your fics get surprisingly popular (whatever that means to you)? Which ones? Why do you think they were so successful?
39. Is any aspect of your writing process inspired by other writers or people? If so, who?
40. Do you tend to reread fics or are you a one-and-done kind of person?
41. Link a fic that made you think, "Wow, I want to write like that."
42. Have you ever received a comment that particularly stood out to you for whatever reason?
43. If you take/write prompts: what's your favorite prompt fic that you've written?
44. If you take/write prompts: do you prefer dialogue or scenario/narrative prompts?
45. What's something you've improved on since you started writing fic?
46. Do you prefer writing on your phone or on a computer (or something else)? Do you think where you write affects the way you write?
47. If [insert fic] was a pair of shoes, what kind would it be? Describe the shoes.
48. What's the last fic you read? Do you recommend it?
49. What are you currently working on? Share a few lines if you’re up for it!
50. Answer any question of your choice, or talk about anything you want to talk about!

Winter Birds from Northern Cities and Fields
Painted and printed this as a jigsaw puzzle for my family as a Christmas gift (half of my family lives in the city and half in the countryside so likewise some birds are more urban and others prefer rural areas)

So it has come to my attention that not everyone grew up with the phrase “peopled out”, which my family uses as the socialising version of “tired out”.
Like. After a day of socialising, I would be very tired of interacting with people, and when my mom came home and wanted to chat, I’d just say “Sorry mom, I’m kind of Peopled Out today” and my mom would be like “Oh, fair enough! We can talk later”, and then she would leave me alone.
I tried to do that with an acquaintance recently and they acted like the very concept of me being tired of people-ing was a personal attack on them and I just???? I assumed this was a universal experience, like getting thirsty when it’s hot outside?????????????

It’s always slightly, like, painful when you see someone say ‘No one is actually saying [obvious strawman argument]!”
Because, like, I get you. But it’s vitally important to understand that this is the internet, and there is someone out there earnestly and loudly yelling how much they 100% do believe whatever your enemy’s most absurd caricature of your positions is.
If your argument relies on no one being a specific flavor of stupid on the internet, you’re just begging to get some deeply unwell teen and/or maladjusted 30-year-old with an anime pfp’s twitter account thrown in your face.
