Discovering Jon and Martin’s Birthdays

It’s a wonder how much you can uncover about The Magnus Archives using only a bit of mathematics and a smidge of psychology.

Apparently I have too much time for both and can definitively say that I have revealed the absolute best and most accurate dates for both of their birthdays. Feel free to join me as we dissect piece by piece when these two were born and put to rest the age old question: What is Jon’s zodiac sign?

I’ll put the results in the tags as a TLDR if you’re not interested in reading my method and simply care about what star sign they are or what date to put in your calendar so you can go out for ice cream.

Statement Begins.

To find out the birthdays of Jon and Martin, we first must determine when exactly they joined the Archives. This will be important for the wider picture, as after all, the earliest possible birthday must take place after they start working there. We also must understand the Archive team’s speed in order to understand how to space out our statements and find that aforementioned number.

Gertrude Robinson passed away, according to her file, on the 15th of May 2015. This makes 15th May our earliest possible starting date. The next time the day’s date was specified was on 13th January 2016, when Naomi Herne gave a live statement. This is MAG 13, and our latest start date. Obviously, these numbers are nowhere close to the day we’re looking for, but they act as upper and lower limits. Our answer is somewhere inside.

In Jon’s supplemental notes for MAG 12, he states that Gerard Keay passed away late the previous year. Since Gertrude died after Gerard in early 2015, he must have died in late 2014. This confirms that MAG 1-12 was recorded to tape in 2015. We know that MAG 13, the next statement, was given live on 13th January 2016. This creates, at the very least, an almost two-week gap between archiving statements. This is likely due to the holiday season, so the time between 24th December and up to 1st January can be omitted. To recap, MAG 1-12 was recorded in 2015, and MAG 13 onwards in 2016.

The key to determining archival speed lies with Martin. Martin goes missing right before MAG 17 and reappears at the end of MAG 21. As he gave such a detailed account of those two weeks, our archiving timeline can be significantly accurate. MAG 19-20 were more than likely recorded on the same day, meaning three separate recording sessions took place in two weeks. However, it took a minimum of six weeks to record MAG 14-16.

So far, the timeline looks like this:

Now we have to figure out the left half.

Calculating the average time it takes to archive statements from MAG 13-22 (removing any outliers from our calculations), we can find a true average and apply it to the 2015 year. By March of The Magnus Institute’s 2016 calendar year, the Archive staff was able to archive 1.31 statements per week. I double-checked this number by doing the same with the statements recorded between MAG 22 and MAG 39. By multiplying the average amount of weeks it should take them by the adjusted number of statements recorded, it should equal the number of weeks it actually did take them. If the numbers are the same, the average is reliable. Hoping for the number 20, the number of weeks I had calculated... was 20.11. This average seems relievingly trustworthy and fits Elias’ complaint about the staff “barely getting through one statement per week.”

All we have to do now is multiply the first 12 statements by the 1.31 average to determine how many weeks it most likely took to do the recorded work of 2015. This leaves us with 15.72 weeks and makes the earliest and most probable start date somewhere around 5th September 2015. I will round this to 1st September as I am not expecting the team to start working on statements right out the gate, so these extra four days act as a buffer for everyone to get their bearings and find the tape recorder. Also, it’s convenient for Elias’ financials to start everyone on the 1st of the month.

Now is the fun part - the birthdays. We now know that Jon and Martin’s birthdays must fall somewhere between early September and the end of February. Since March kicks off the Archives living with the threat of Jane Prentiss, they have to take place before then. After that point, the team is far too stressed to have the carefree party heard in MAG 161. We also know that Martin’s birthday has to come before Jon’s, as the team mentions going out for ice cream at Jon’s party. This event has to be long enough in the past for Jon to forget about it, so their birthdays must be reasonably spaced out from one another in the allotted time. Likewise, an amount of time must have passed after their start date for the team to be close enough bond to want to celebrate Martin’s birthday.

Martin’s birth year is easy to determine. Martin tells us his age in MAG 56. His birthday could not have happened at this point in 2017, so his birth year must be 1987. In a Q&A, it was speculated that Jon and Martin have birthdays near each other (and one being slightly older than the other), so only 1987 and 1988 are our options for Jon’s birth year. Let’s look a bit closer at that.

Early ‘88 is closer to Late ‘87 than Early ‘87. At Jon’s birthday party, he says he’s turning 38. Martin is 29 at this time. The obvious conclusion to me is that Jon simply adds a decade to his age. (I find this the most hilarious yet believable scenario.) Jonny was also born in 1988, being 28 himself when that scene would take place. As Jon’s childhood details sometimes mirror Jonny’s, I am taking this as a sign of accuracy.

And by doing some additional work that I will not share here, I can reliably say that these are the best observed birthdays for Jon and Martin:

Martin - 23rd November, 1987

Jonathan - 2nd February, 1988

Also, this makes Martin a potential Valentine’s Day Baby. Do with that what you will.

Herald of Seasons - Danny obtains the ability to guide the seasons when he was split off from .Phantom while still having Vortex's powers

Vortex's lil guy - Soulless Danny gets taken by Vortex and is his little guy.

??? - Phantom causes a ruckus in DC after getting into it and him and Danny fight or something.

Sold to the devil? Nah, sold to the bear - Constantine sells his soul to the Ghost Prince, and is then turned into a baby sitter by the Ghost King.

Demon and Wraith - Demon twins au where both of them are dancers.

Sun and Moon - Based on an older au where Danny and Vlad were deities.

Ghost King at birth, Farmer at heart - Mostly cosmetic au where Pariah Dark, if he weren't the ghost king, would be a farmer and he has an intense love for horses.

Farmer with quite the ghostly (and kingly) secret - Pariah Dark disguises himself as a human and moves into Smallville, has a hard time interacting with humans and humaning as a whole.

Life hanging by tape and sheer will - Where Tucker gets yeeted to the DC dimension.

Dream pals? Dream pals! - Younger Danny and pre-Batman Bruce meet each other through a dream, unfortunately when Danny experienced his accident that connection was shut down.

Bakery and a masquerading demon? - Vlad owns a bakery, Constantine is a regular who holds suspicions that Vlad may or may not be a demon.

Gift in the arms of tragedy - Danny becomes Vlad's ward after the Nasty Burger explosion, only to then become adopted when he was turned into an eight-year-old not even a week later.

??? - Danny and Vlad get turned into kids by Clockwork and placed in the DC dimension because Clockwork thought it was funny. Danny decides to use Vlad to not get adopted.

The key(s) to Doomsday - Danny gets de-aged by Clockwork when going to visit Pariah in the human world, gets summoned, and meets Raven.

Alicorn parole - Pariah gets released from his eternal rest with the sole condition that he's to be watched over by Clockwork. The Ancient of War then decides to combine two mythical beasts and shaped himself into an alicorn, Clockwork followed and then they met Billy Batson.

Ferret Danny - Danny is a ferret. That's it.

Witch - Sam is a witch.

Dead eyed Doctor - Danny, the son of Talia Al Ghul and Jack Fenton, trained under Vlad Masters and became a doctor.

Shadow Twin? Shadow Twin. - Danny dies and reincarnates as the son of Talia Al Ghul, the younger brother and twin of Damian Wayne and son of Batman. Only to then be killed immediately after because he was born with a birth defect, thus becoming a shadow creature that follows Damian around.

Match and Danny - Danny reincarnates into the body of a clone of Superman and Wonder Woman, steals Match and then becomes Metropolis cryptids. Also check out this fic it's great!!!!!

(b) The term ‘‘bulk-power system electric equip- ment’’ means items used in bulk-power system sub- stations, control rooms, or power generating stations, including reactors, capacitors, substation transformers, current coupling capacitors, large generators, backup generators, substation voltage regulators, shunt capac- itor equipment, automatic circuit reclosers, instru- ment transformers, coupling capacity voltage trans- formers, protective relaying, metering equipment, high voltage circuit breakers, generation turbines, indus- trial control systems, distributed control systems, and safety instrumented systems. Items not included in the preceding list and that have broader application of use beyond the bulk-power system are outside the scope of this order.

(c) The term ‘‘entity’’ means a partnership, associa- tion, trust, joint venture, corporation, group, subgroup, or other organization.

(d) The term ‘‘foreign adversary’’ means any foreign government or foreign non-government person engaged in a long-term pattern or serious instances of conduct significantly adverse to the national security of the United States or its allies or the security and safety of United States persons.

(e) The term ‘‘person’’ means an individual or entity.

(f) The term ‘‘procurement’’ means the acquiring by contract with appropriated funds of supplies or serv- ices, including installation services, by and for the use of the Federal Government, through purchase, whether the supplies or services are already in existence or must be created, developed, demonstrated, and evalu- ated.

(g) The term ‘‘United States person’’ means any United States citizen, permanent resident alien, entity organized under the laws of the United States or any jurisdiction within the United States (including foreign branches), or any person in the United States.

SEC. 5. Recurring and Final Reports to the Congress. The Secretary is hereby authorized to submit recurring and final reports to the Congress regarding the national emergency declared in this order, consistent with sec- tion 401(c) of the NEA (50 U.S.C. 1641(c)) and section 204(c) of IEEPA (50 U.S.C. 1703(c)).

SEC. 6. General Provisions. (a) Nothing in this order shall be construed to impair or otherwise affect:

(i) the authority granted by law to an executive de- partment or agency, or the head thereof; or

(ii) the functions of the Director of the Office of Man- agement and Budget relating to budgetary, administra- tive, or legislative proposals.

(b) This order shall be implemented consistent with applicable law and subject to the availability of appro- priations.

(c) This order is not intended to, and does not, create any right or benefit, substantive or procedural, enforce- able at law or in equity by any party against the United States, its departments, agencies, or entities, its officers, employees, or agents, or any other person.

§ 1622. National emergencies (a) Termination methods

Any national emergency declared by the President in accordance with this subchapter shall terminate if—

(1) there is enacted into law a joint resolu- tion terminating the emergency; or

(2) the President issues a proclamation ter- minating the emergency.

Any national emergency declared by the Presi- dent shall be terminated on the date specified in any joint resolution referred to in clause (1) or on the date specified in a proclamation by the President terminating the emergency as pro- vided in clause (2) of this subsection, whichever date is earlier, and any powers or authorities ex-

ercised by reason of said emergency shall cease to be exercised after such specified date, except that such termination shall not affect—

(A) any action taken or proceeding pending not finally concluded or determined on such date;

(B) any action or proceeding based on any act committed prior to such date; or

(C) any rights or duties that matured or pen- alties that were incurred prior to such date.

(b) Termination review of national emergencies by Congress

Not later than six months after a national emergency is declared, and not later than the end of each six-month period thereafter that such emergency continues, each House of Con- gress shall meet to consider a vote on a joint resolution to determine whether that emergency shall be terminated.

(c) Joint resolution; referral to Congressional committees; conference committee in event of disagreement; filing of report; termination procedure deemed part of rules of House and Senate

(1) A joint resolution to terminate a national emergency declared by the President shall be re- ferred to the appropriate committee of the House of Representatives or the Senate, as the case may be. One such joint resolution shall be reported out by such committee together with its recommendations within fifteen calendar days after the day on which such resolution is referred to such committee, unless such House shall otherwise determine by the yeas and nays.

(2) Any joint resolution so reported shall be- come the pending business of the House in ques- tion (in the case of the Senate the time for de- bate shall be equally divided between the pro- ponents and the opponents) and shall be voted on within three calendar days after the day on which such resolution is reported, unless such House shall otherwise determine by yeas and nays.

(3) Such a joint resolution passed by one House shall be referred to the appropriate committee of the other House and shall be reported out by such committee together with its recommenda- tions within fifteen calendar days after the day on which such resolution is referred to such committee and shall thereupon become the pending business of such House and shall be voted upon within three calendar days after the day on which such resolution is reported, unless such House shall otherwise determine by yeas and nays.

(4) In the case of any disagreement between the two Houses of Congress with respect to a joint resolution passed by both Houses, con- ferees shall be promptly appointed and the com- mittee of conference shall make and file a re- port with respect to such joint resolution within six calendar days after the day on which man- agers on the part of the Senate and the House have been appointed. Notwithstanding any rule in either House concerning the printing of con- ference reports or concerning any delay in the consideration of such reports, such report shall be acted on by both Houses not later than six calendar days after the conference report is filed in the House in which such report is filed first.

In the event the conferees are unable to agree within forty-eight hours, they shall report back to their respective Houses in disagreement.

(5) Paragraphs (1)–(4) of this subsection, sub- section (b) of this section, and section 1651(b) of this title are enacted by Congress—

(A) as an exercise of the rulemaking power of the Senate and the House of Representa- tives, respectively, and as such they are deemed a part of the rules of each House, re- spectively, but applicable only with respect to the procedure to be followed in the House in the case of resolutions described by this sub- section; and they supersede other rules only to the extent that they are inconsistent there- with; and

(B) with full recognition of the constitu- tional right of either House to change the rules (so far as relating to the procedure of that House) at any time, in the same manner, and to the same extent as in the case of any other rule of that House.

(d) Automatic termination of national emer- gency; continuation notice from President to Congress; publication in Federal Register

Any national emergency declared by the President in accordance with this subchapter, and not otherwise previously terminated, shall terminate on the anniversary of the declaration of that emergency if, within the ninety-day pe- riod prior to each anniversary date, the Presi- dent does not publish in the Federal Register and transmit to the Congress a notice stating that such emergency is to continue in effect after such anniversary.

(b) Presidential orders, rules and regulations; transmittal to Congress

All such significant orders of the President, including Executive orders, and such rules and regulations shall be transmitted to the Congress promptly under means to assure confidentiality where appropriate.

(c) Expenditures during national emergency; Presidential reports to Congress

When the President declares a national emer- gency or Congress declares war, the President shall transmit to Congress, within ninety days after the end of each six-month period after such declaration, a report on the total expenditures incurred by the United States Government dur- ing such six-month period which are directly at- tributable to the exercise of powers and authori- ties conferred by such declaration. Not later than ninety days after the termination of each such emergency or war, the President shall transmit a final report on all such expenditures.

Disclaimer for anyone who comes across this post that isn’t in the know- “A Rose of Ice in Summer” is a fake series made up for this bracket blog! It is being developed through people making fake analysis, similar to the phenomenon that happened with Goncharov

While there are polls running to decide prev, it seems likely that it’ll be a book,

And it’s been established that the original book series was published in the 2000s, but has an upcoming television adaptation announced

The original book series had an ambiguous ending, and with the adaptation announced there is speculation to whether or not it will be kept ambiguous

The fandom is small, but clearly very passionate!

Rose is the main character

There is a character named Belladonna who’s a foil to Rose

There is a character named Opal who plays a small role in the story

There is a character named Carter

There is an antagonist character named Radiance (she has committed yet-to-be-specified atrocities. a “god forbid women do anything” kind of woman)

Scenes/ideas mentioned

The main character, Rose, was attacked by a crow for 20 minutes once. It’s a little funny, but it’s also sad when you think about the symbolism- the crow symbolizes grief and how death keeps coming back, and how she feels like she can’t stop it no matter how hard she tries

Rose has a best friend who is a guy, but there is never any canonical romance between them- and also with the specifics of it not being a “love Triangle” there’s a hypothetical second guy

Creating a bridge between the last bullet point and the next one- the first best friend has a yet-to-be-specified thing about names, and is phrased as “settling” on the name Lily- this lead many fans to speculate trans headcanons for the character, but it’s noncanon

There’s an important point where Rose has the option to stay with Lily, but chooses not to. This is a low point in her arc, and it’s implied things would have been better for her if she did stay, but she cannot go back for an unspecified reason (at least, during the series)

(The thing about Lily being Rose’s best friend, and Rose leaving Lily at some point, were sent in by two different people who happened to choose the same character name, but I’ve decided to combine both of those. Further bridging this based on things known from other content, perhaps the love-interest/love-triangle thing is subverted between Rose and Lily by it turning out that they’re siblings in some way - this would elaborate on why they not only aren’t a canon ship but Should Not Be shipped At All)

Rose’s other best friend is Kivan, who’s a bit more “boring” and background in the first book but gets a lot more interesting later when he reveals a big plot twist

There is a scene that takes place in a garden that is considered “iconic”. There’s also some flower symbolism befitting the fact that it takes place in a garden.

Lots of flower symbolism in general that gives it a lot of reread value

Other symbolism; glass/glassy eyes, cold hands, the sun, broken swords, the color white

Lux is mostly a background antagonist in book 1, but becomes important later for yet-to-be-specified reasons

As mentioned, There is a running theme about the color white and light in general being Ominous as opposed to unquestionably good (the character Radiance fits into this theme, and so does Lux)

Etienne and Currant are twins

The character Etienne is morally gray in some way, with some fans defending her actions and some hating her for them

At some point Etienne caused an “incident” involving Ravens

Etienne tries to write an apology point at some point early on, the apology note both being kinda funny because of some point of it that was messed up, but also important to the character

Later on, Etienne helps the protagonists in some way by providing invitations and disguises- it has not yet been elaborated what those were for, but presumably they’re important in some way

Some people ship Etienne and Madame Spiceberry romantically

Unlike his twin, Currant is a positive mentor figure, and a genuinely good role model

Currant has a thematically important monologue in book 3

The character Ellana was given a bunch of chapters in book 4 to flesh out her backstory, and while some fans dislike those chapters for “messing with the pacing”, they’re important to the overall theme of that specific book

When Opal���s background story arc “concludes” in a way, they stay with Madame Spiceberry in some way, becoming a background element in plots that revisit her

Madam Spiceberry is also an innkeeper

Carter is canonically genderfluid, using she/her and he/him pronouns, and has a minor plot with Opal in some way.

There is a yet-to-be-specified complex magic system

There’s a lost kid who helps the plot in some way in Chapter 3 (of book one presumably)

The villains Sunrise and Sunset tie into book 5′s themes of identity

Alexandria is the first death to happen in the story, but she’s a “haunts the narrative” kind of dead character

There’s a shopkeeper named Monty who appears in exactly one scene in book 3, drops some kind of important worldbuilding/lore fact, and is never seen again (presumably the characters never answer the fact because to them it’s not important, but to an audience trying to theorize about lore it’s everything)

So far it has been implied that Isabeth may have killed Ruskan, and that’s why people hate her, but the details are as of yet unspecified

Mr. Oaks is responsible for something referred to as “the pergola incident”

note: I literally came up with the title on a whim and went "that's a good story idea!" and just went with it. There was literally no storyline basis I just wrote and hoped it turned out. Kisses! <3

summary: after a late night drive Quackity and Y/n have their routine laughing fit and crash

Our laughter rings around the walls of our shared apartment, bouncing off of the ceiling and wood floors creating a slight echo in its wake. The sky was dark from outside the living room windows, the only light coming through the open curtains was from the gentle glow of the streetlights and the brightness of the full moon, few stars could be seen through the smog in the sky. 

Quackity and I had just gotten back from one of our late-night drives. We went to our usual place on these sporadic adventures, the same one he took me on our first date where our relationship of five years started: to the mountain lookout that oversaw the entire city. There, we found that the stars were closer to us than we thought; only this time, they were in the form of the twinkling lights created by the life of our home. 

The lightness of the atmosphere sparked joy in our hearts. Between the jokes cracked, drinks spilled, and impressions made, an outsider would guess that we’re zooted out of our minds. 

“No no! No no! But like if we could get Dwayne ‘The Rick–’”

“The Rick?” Quackity interrupted, making fun of my slip up. I stick my tongue out at him and he does it back as I finish my pitch.

“ – ‘The Rock’ Johnson,” I correct, “to play ‘Zamboni Man’ on ‘George on Ice: The Musical’ we could get crowds of people, Q! They would come for Zamboni Man and stay for George’s two man show about his life story– on ice and in musical form! And Zamboni Man plates everyone in George’s life except for George, so he even plays you!”

“Oh yeah?” He giggles, an entertained smile painted on his face as he listens to my and my friends’ ideas.

“Yeah! Wilbur and I have already written some music for it and there’s this one part when Zamboni Man– as you– says ‘quack quack, mother fucker! You know, as a catchphrase!’” My eyes blow wide and I give Quackity a wide, open-mouth smile, proud of the idea.

The fact that Quackity could tell I was 100% serious by the deranged open-mouthed staredown I was giving him caused him to erupt in his usual contagious laughter and double over at the intensity of it. I kept yelling “think of the opportunities” at him as he laughed harder and harder each time. It got to the point where tears began streaming both of our faces after I joined in and started kettling. I would kettle, he would laugh harder, which would cause me to laugh harder, the cycle continues.

We were once sitting on the couch… not anymore. Quackity kept muttering “quack quack mother fucker” to himself through his laughter as I clutch my stomach, both of us rolling around the floor near where we fell off the couch. I can hear Q crawling towards me as I lay my arm over my eyes and my other over my stomach, both slowly sobering up. Red splotches puff our under eyes and dried up tears paint our faces from both laughter and pain. 

Picking up my arm from my stomach, Alex lays his head on my chest and wraps his arms around me, my deep breaths calming him down even faster than before. I bring my one arm around him, causing him to cuddle closer, and bring my hand up to his hair, threading it through the soft, dark strands.

We lay like this for a while, enjoying each other’s touch as we calm down and bring our breathing back to normal. I keep running my fingers through my boyfriend’s hair, lightly scratching his head, and his gentle hums of contentment resonate my chest. Light kisses pepper my neck and jaw and collarbone– really anything Alex can reach. Over the course of a few short minutes, the kisses lessen as his breathing starts to even out and his eyes begin to flutter shut, slowly drifting to sleep. I shift my gaze from the beautiful man on top of me to the clock on the wall, noticing that it reads 4:00 am. With the knowledge of the whining that he and I are going to do in the morning if we don’t sleep in our actual bed is the motivation that it takes for me to wake up my tired boyfriend.

I gently brush the hair away from Alex’s closed eyes, causing him to stir in my arms. “My Love, we have to go to bed.” I whisper.

His eyes slowly blink open as he rubs the sleep out of his eyes. He looks up at me, eyes still heavy and nods, slowly getting off the floor and bringing me with him. After I grab both of our phones from where they were thrown on the floor, earlier in the night, Alex picks me up bridal style and wordlessly carries me to our room.

He gently sets me down on our bed and chucks one of his shirts at me (it smacked me in the face but whatever), getting changed as I plug in our phones. I take off everything but my underwear and pull the shirt over my head, breathing in the smell of my boyfriend’s cologne. Q and I crawl into the sheets at the same time, settling into our previous position. The moonlight from the window illuminates my boyfriend’s features, casting a soft blue in its wake. He must’ve sensed me staring, because he looks up to meet my eyes, sending a slightly confused look my way. 

“What?” He giggles, dark eyes shining in the moonlight.

“You just look really pretty.” I say, a dim blush and bashful smile makes its way onto Alex’s face.

“Te amo, mi vida, te amo mucho.” He says, voice low and intimate. Now it’s my turn to blush.

Quackity cups my cheek, thumb stroking my cheekbone, as he stares up at me with eyes full of love and wonder. He brings me down to him, lips brushing and breath intertwining. Alex tilts his head up slightly, causing our lips to meet in a slow and gentle kiss– one so full of love that I savor everything about it. We finally break apart when the need for air gets too much, panting slightly as we look at the other with love-sick smiles on our faces. He peppering soft kisses from my collarbone to under my ear and I subconsciously tilt my head back to give him more space, threading my hand through his hair once more.

“Quack quack, mother fucker.” He whispers in my ear, gently biting at the lobe, jarring me out of the trance I was in. Before I can ask him why the fuck he would say that now, he shushed me and continued to kiss all over my face, now hovering over me. “It’s my catchphrase now, now just enjoy yourself– you woke me up now deal with it.” 

“Did you really want to sleep on the floor?” I ask, amused. Alex pauses his actions and squints before giving me a quick peck on the lips.

“I’m going to keep going with the catchphrase if you don’t stop talking.”

“But–”

“Quack quack, mother fucker– I warned you–”

“Quackity, nO!”
