i’ve been mostly only vaguely excited to go to pax bc i’m not a big gamer and even tho i’m only doing nintendo stuff i don’t care about zelda or pikmin either which are two of the big games of this year but now that it’s tomorrow i’m like yoooo… i get to demo super mario wonder and i get to watch live esports for my favorite video game…. this is actually very cool and awesome i’m gonna have a good time

The CEO of Panda Cup allegedly shutting down the Smash tournament scene & manipulating Nintendo is scary to watch as a Spaltoon player. Is Alan's end goal only Smash or is he going to be a problem for all gaming tournaments that feature Nintendo games & ips?

Honestly it is the funniest possible result that the Squid Sisters won because for some reason their team's players were all fucking Esports Gamers or some shit. Lesbians and nbs/polycules lost to the dudes that have been treating Splatoon like Halo Infinite

the thing with being good at any video game that's not a massively popular ESport, like Fortnite, Splatoon, or Rainbow Six Seige, is that there's no functional use for the skills I have, like, I cannot turn being able to do a moonboosted demohyper double block boosted ultra, or booster cornerglide speed retention into anything useful in reality :P

im not vocal at all on twitter nor in the splatoon comp community (as a solo queue player i just lurk lol) but ive been thinking a lot since last night re: Jackpot members and others being exposed (cw: racist and homophobic slurs) and people wondering how Nintendo will respond wrt two of the world champions being huge fucking racists.

one of the major reasons that bigotry is perpetuated so much in competitive gaming is because in a field that receives little to no monetary support, you need a certain level of privilege to commit full-time to playing a video game competitively-- what with the time and resources needed to practice, coordinate and attend conventions and tournaments, to the point of your teams placing on top. on the NA and Europe side, you're gonna get a lot of sheltered, undisciplined white kids. this is true of most fields honestly, because capitalism and all, but my point is to keep in mind that it's a systemic issue.

esports has always been rather unsustainable. that doesn't mean the community as a whole deserves to lose what little support it gets, because it's nintendo's responsibility to support, moderate, and promote diversity within the community if it wants to reap any benefits from the competitive scene.* if Nintendo were to abandon esports again like with the smash bros. situation, it would be completely counterproductive (and unlikely, since I imagine the scene in Japan is way bigger and more successful).

the criticism from Black and LGBTQ+ players is more than true; there needs to be complete intolerance for racism and other bigotry in this community if it's to thrive.

also, please don't be complacent with all the mediocre apology posts from the past day or so. accountability goes way beyond saving face.
