ever wonder why spotify/discord/teams desktop apps kind of suck?
i don't do a lot of long form posts but. I realized that so many people aren't aware that a lot of the enshittification of using computers in the past decade or so has a lot to do with embedded webapps becoming so frequently used instead of creating native programs. and boy do i have some thoughts about this.
for those who are not blessed/cursed with computers knowledge Basically most (graphical) programs used to be native programs (ever since we started widely using a graphical interface instead of just a text-based terminal). these are apps that feel like when you open up the settings on your computer, and one of the factors that make windows and mac programs look different (bc they use a different design language!) this was the standard for a long long time - your emails were served to you in a special email application like thunderbird or outlook, your documents were processed in something like microsoft word (again. On your own computer!). same goes for calendars, calculators, spreadsheets, and a whole bunch more - crucially, your computer didn't depend on the internet to do basic things, but being connected to the web was very much an appreciated luxury!
that leads us to the eventual rise of webapps that we are all so painfully familiar with today - gmail dot com/outlook, google docs, google/microsoft calendar, and so on. as html/css/js technology grew beyond just displaying text images and such, it became clear that it could be a lot more convenient to just run programs on some server somewhere, and serve the front end on a web interface for anyone to use. this is really very convenient!!!! it Also means a huge concentration of power (notice how suddenly google is one company providing you the SERVICE) - you're renting instead of owning. which means google is your landlord - the services you use every day are first and foremost means of hitting the year over year profit quota. its a pretty sweet deal to have a free email account in exchange for ads! email accounts used to be paid (simply because the provider had to store your emails somewhere. which takes up storage space which is physical hard drives), but now the standard as of hotmail/yahoo/gmail is to just provide a free service and shove ads in as much as you need to.
webapps can do a lot of things, but they didn't immediately replace software like skype or code editors or music players - software that requires more heavy system interaction or snappy audio/visual responses. in 2013, the electron framework came out - a way of packaging up a bundle of html/css/js into a neat little crossplatform application that could be downloaded and run like any other native application. there were significant upsides to this - web developers could suddenly use their webapp skills to build desktop applications that ran on any computer as long as it could support chrome*! the first applications to be built on electron were the late code editor atom (rest in peace), but soon a whole lot of companies took note! some notable contemporary applications that use electron, or a similar webapp-embedded-in-a-little-chrome as a base are:
microsoft teams
notion
vscode
discord
spotify
anyone! who has paid even a little bit of attention to their computer - especially when using older/budget computers - know just how much having chrome open can slow down your computer (firefox as well to a lesser extent. because its just built better <3)
whenever you have one of these programs open on your computer, it's running in a one-tab chrome browser. there is a whole extra chrome open just to run your discord. if you have discord, spotify, and notion open all at once, along with chrome itself, that's four chromes. needless to say, this uses a LOT of resources to deliver applications that are often much less polished and less integrated with the rest of the operating system. it also means that if you have no internet connection, sometimes the apps straight up do not work, since much of them rely heavily on being connected to their servers, where the heavy lifting is done.
taking this idea to the very furthest is the concept of chromebooks - dinky little laptops that were created to only run a web browser and webapps - simply a vessel to access the google dot com mothership. they have gotten better at running offline android/linux applications, but often the $200 chromebooks that are bought in bulk have almost no processing power of their own - why would you even need it? you have everything you could possibly need in the warm embrace of google!
all in all the average person in the modern age, using computers in the mainstream way, owns very little of their means of computing.
i started this post as a rant about the electron/webapp framework because i think that it sucks and it displaces proper programs. and now ive swiveled into getting pissed off at software services which is in honestly the core issue. and i think things can be better!!!!!!!!!!! but to think about better computing culture one has to imagine living outside of capitalism.
i'm not the one to try to explain permacomputing specifically because there's already wonderful literature ^ but if anything here interested you, read this!!!!!!!!!! there is a beautiful world where computers live for decades and do less but do it well. and you just own it. come frolic with me Okay ? :]
*when i say chrome i technically mean chromium. but functionally it's same thing

Introducing Charts v3
Formally developed by SeyDesign / Nimblehost, the Charts stack has received a major update this past weekend. To check if you are eligible for a free update, you can login to your Paddle account to see if Charts is listed there. For everybody else, the latest trial version and purchase links for Charts can be found on the product page. Charts is included in the Black Friday promo.
Charts is a handy little stack if you need to convert a CSV spreadsheet file into basic line charts, bar charts, pie charts, scatterplots, area charts, meter gauges or doughnut circles. These can be useful to visually display simple data on websites or webapps. A wide choice of style options within the Charts stack allow you to customise the generated charts and graphs to match your existing theme or corporate branding.

As before, the Charts stack works from a CSV file you supply. Most spreadsheet software can generate CSV files. This offers a quick method towards getting your axis labels and datasets loaded into Charts; with zero code required. Charts does all the hard work for you, to convert your CSV data into beautiful charts. You can either use CSV files added as resources in RapidWeaver or link to CSV files already stored on your web hosting account.
Changes in Charts v3 include:
Generated charts can now be previewed in RapidWeaver.
Fixed a problem that resulted in bar and line point labels missing.
Greatly improved the handling of multiple Chart stacks, when they are configured differently to each other on the same webpage.
Fixed a problem, whereby graph axis labels would always get shown on the pie and doughnut chart types, where one was not needed.
New options to specify a maximum width or height, in your preferred units of measurement (e.g. %, px, rem, vw, vh).
All colour pickers now support RGBa colour opacity.
Fixed a bug that was causing a thick black line to be rendered under chart canvases in Foundation 6.
Requested by a user, the starting angle of doughnut and pie charts can now be customised in degrees.
Updated some stack setting labels and informational tooltips, to make setup quicker and easier.
Dropped support for Internet Explorer 8 and less. These web browsers have been officially obsolete for some years. Few people use these browsers anymore. This has the benefit of greatly reducing the amount of code everybody else has to load.
Fixed a bug that caused Meter Gauges to vanish if a chart further up the page had more than 8 data points and labels enabled (yeah - I had hours of fun trying to find and fix this one)!
New background colour and font size options for chart legends.
Reorganised and regrouped a few of the stack settings, to make things easier to find.
As requested by a user, it is now possible to rotate both x-axis and y-axis ticks, on bar and line charts.
Support has been added for Area Charts. These can be accomplished by using the existing Line Chart type, and selecting the Area Plot checkbox (in Line Chart Options).
New stack icons and a few other tidbits of information required by newer versions of Stacks and RapidWeaver. Rewrote the buggy '&&' operator conditional statements.
Added the ability to toggle the chart box shadow effects on and off using a single checkbox option.
Cleaned up 'edit mode' to display less information about Charts. Important messages are still displayed if something is configured incorrectly.
New number box to change the sizing of point labels on bar charts.
Perhaps the biggest feature of all is that Charts is now fully responsive. This means that generated charts or graphs will scale-down to fit tablets and smartphones. Therefore removing the need to create multiple charts for different screen sizes. I know this has been a frequent user request for many years! Major technical hurdles had to be overcome, which meant rewriting a large portion of the underlying codebase and reconnecting all the settings. Charts will now redraw each time the screen is resized or changes orientation.
The product page for Charts has been updated with all new documentation. I have also put together a RapidWeaver 8 project file you can download. This contains several real working examples of Charts that you can experiment with. These tests work with the free trial version of Charts and the paid version.
Charts v3 will identify itself as a new stack and can be installed alongside older versions. Given the magnitude of changes, it will not attempt to convert or update older versions. This newest version of Charts has a bright orange and white icon.
Also of note, I have updated the LineGraph stack too. This one is a good option if you are only interested to making responsive line graphs (including area charts and scatterplots).

Final: Minecraft, Docs, Wikipedia, Twitter, Mash-ups, & On the Horizon
Experience Working with Minecraft
My experience working with Minecraft has been fun and educational. It has shown me how open-world crafting games can be future-proofed, given Minecraft’s recent surge in popularity. Initially, I did not really understand why Minecraft was relevant to the class. I expected a kid’s game with survival elements. In reality, the game is very complex and enjoyable for all ages. I used Minecraft briefly before this semester. I found Minecraft to be of intermediate difficulty as the cursor-based movement made me nauseous to some degree.

Twitter and Tumblr
My favourite tool for managing my twitter feed is Buffer. The plugin allows you to schedule tweets on your feed so that you can maintain an online presence even when you are away. You use it by logging into twitter through the Buffer portal. Then, you compose tweets within the Buffer webapp and schedule them to be posted regularly or at specific dates. There are also some analytics involved that allow you to know when your followers are most active and receptive to new content. It is practical, convenient and freemium. I would recommend it to my friends because they might want to consistently post content on twitter to maintain and grow their followings.

Mash-ups: Rent the Backyard
Rent the Backyard integrates google maps API, multiple listing service, pay service, and social media elements to allow them to build studio apartments and let users to rent people’s backyards. Part of Y Combinator’s 2019 batch of ventures, this promising start-up seeks to disrupt the housing market by utilising unused space in people’s backyards and rent it to people who need it. This is a useful tool because it could potentially lower the cost of housing in highly populated urban areas and can add density to cities like San Francisco. Rent the Backyard also covers the costs of building housing, which many renters and homeowners cannot afford, in exchange for temporary equity in the guest home’s rents.
http://rentthebackyard.com/
Tumblr and Upcoming Social Media technologies (from On The Horizon Class)
Favourite Technology: I maintain that Solid is my favourite because it will be technology that disrupts the internet as we know it. I am excited to have an internet user experience where I can drag and drop web apps seamlessly, take control of my own data, and take back control from corporations monopolising the net. I think a freer, decentralised, and privacy minded internet is what users today need and will want into the future. This is currently a disconnect between apps with ecosystems, mobile apps, and webapps that needs to be bridged.
Least Favourite Technology: Musicly.ly (a.k.a. TikTok) is my least favourite because it overexposes children to online interactions. It also does not serve much functional purpose. By elevating platforms like Music.ly, we are supporting the notion that being a celebrity or influencer is a noble profession for young people to aspire to. I think the site also benefits too much from sensationalism and can encourage children to try dangerous #challenges or attempt tricks that can harm them. The sense of humour on the site is also questionable as we are priming users to laugh at people, not with them. In line with the Frontline “Generation Like,” Music.ly is a social media site that encourages children to do the wrong things.

MICROSOFT OFFICE 365 AND 2019 FOR NURTURING BUSINESS EFFICIENCY
office.com/setup | www.office.com/setup
Since three decades the scope of Microsoft office tools has tremendously increased from just emails, PowerPoint presentations, letter writings, etc. to a whole new world of cloud computing with benefits lined up for not just homes and small offices, but for leading business enterprises as well. There are a lot of versions for Microsoft office applications ranging from Office 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016 with the most updated versions as office 365 setup and office 2019.
Just a few years earlier, Microsoft office tools were easy to operate and were available with limited features. Just in return for cash, you used to get a small box with installation disc and a few software applications usable on PC. However, nowadays things are a lot more different and there is a huge difference between the features provided.

Older Microsoft office versions: Whether your work is completely home-based or requires large office premises you can work almost anywhere with the reliable tools provided under Microsoft office suites. You’re unable to attend the workplace but need to finish an urgent task under tight deadlines; no worries as with all Microsoft office versions you get seamless accessibility through all devices whether it’s a laptop, tablet or a smartphone. Office applications and their features allow you to make that report without any issues.
Some basic applications you get with all office versions are OneDrive, Outlook, Excel, Word, Powerpoint and OneNote. The tools and features provided for these applications incorporate well for home as well as office usage. With different versions of MS Office, you get a unique set of features for your home or business requirements as well.
MS Office 2007 The 2007 office still remains suited for home use and small works like making presentations, creating word files, spreadsheets, emailing, etc.
The program uses XML file formats with small document size and incorporates well with external data sources. MS Office 2007 is simple to use with ease of access to menu, commands and other resources.
MS Office 2010 Being an update to the office 2007 the MS Office 2010 introduces a much better design with ribbon’ interface and comes with video support for PowerPoint. The program is available in business and home edition.
The program had notable improvements with new outlook tools. Screen capturing tools with better translation optionsWorks lightfast and easy Share documents on the cloud through SkyDrive
MS Office 2013 With this update, Microsoft introduced much more productivity to its programs while naming it as “the new office”. The application mimicked a little bit of Windows 8 appearance with functional updates and collaboration with SkyDrive and SharePoint for online data storage. Here are some new additions with the MS Office 2013
Modern and cool interface – The interface with Office 2013 is minimalistic, stark and flat like Windows 8 screen. The idea behind this is to make users more concentrated towards their works instead of drawing away from the appearance.
Start screens – With all applications under MS Office 2013 suite you get different start screens – The Blue one is for Word, Excel comes with green color, PowerPoint with orange, green again for Publisher.
Integration with SkyDrive – The office 2013 is specially designed for cloud integration – particularly with the introduction of seamless applications such as SharePoint and SkyDrive. Users can share their documents on SkyDrive without worrying about data loss.
Sync across different devices – While saving your documents on the internet, you get access to these anytime and from any device. The Office version is available with upgraded WebApps.
MS Office 2016 With all the functions of previous Microsoft Office versions, the Office 2016 is highly featured for collaboration of documents, making team communication more simple and effective. With MS Office 2016, various teams can edit the same files while planning on different projects. Few features of the applications are as follows.
Co-edit with chat feature – The application allows real-time editing with Skype integration for video conferencing with the team.
Share cloud attachments – With Office 2016, users can invite other team members for viewing and editing documents. Share button sites well on the toolbars right side in major applications: PowerPoint, Excel, and Word.
Create groups – The MS Office Outlook 2016 allows users to have their own custom groups. They can also invite other team members with their permission. The subscriptions of these groups appear below the email box list in the left windowpane of outlook.
Manage projects with the new planner – If your team is sharing a project together or just has to complete a few tasks, the overall track of all these activities can be kept with the all-new online Planner app for Office 2016.
– Opting Out If you might want to withdraw, please Send email to [email protected]

lol just when i thought my bitch work task was finally over......... they decided to double it in size. please i just want to turn my covid predictions into a webapp. please can i just build an automated web app instead of this
i did think of something really good tho but i kind of doubt my manager will go for it. instead of me basically manually entering data...... can i PLEASE just build a survey form for the whole company that automatically generates a spreadsheet with all the data...... not only will it be WAY LESS terrible work for me but it will also be way more accurate and it’ll look prettier. and it would also be way easier to account for the airflow in all the buildings (yes i am literally manually entering “where this person works in this corner of the room, the air blows NNE on Carrier <model> AC level 2, 2 hours on and 2 hours off”). and also it would just be more fun. and then i could build my automated web app
no erin stick to your bitch work you bitch
