Here I did not include planks and other regressions because I created this under the assumption that all who will attempt this have a good strength foundation.⁣ 2️⃣ This motion is an arching type of motion and simple straight angle rows will not cut it. ⁣ 3️⃣ You will start off with a little bit of swing and over time it will become smoother and smoother until you can eventually hold yourself in a floating inverted plank. Swimmers looking to improve position, strength, and power in the water, benefit from vertical pulling patterns, like pull downs and pull ups. Training overhead can improve position and stability for those who struggle to get into the best position swimming, teaching the shoulder blades to move over the ribcage, elevate and upwardly rotate with the arms to get overhead. Janda introduced the idea of using reciprocal inhibition to activate the hamstrings during a sit-up pattern to inhibit the hip flexors, engage the core and spare the spine. The ab wheel roll out is the pinnacle of overhead, long lever core activation, but is often done with a hip flexion dominant, passive spinal extension position. Feel like your always foam rolling, stretching, mobilizing the same spots that just seem to stay tight? Tightness and range of motion deficits are not always a stretching, rolling, mobility solution. Often the area that feels tight is not the culprit but a protective symptom of something above or below it. Stretching, rolling, mobilizing these spots can at best give you short term relief, and at worst dispose instability risks, leaving you with segments that may be hyper mobile and others that are still locked. It’s helpful to assess against how joints and the surrounding tissue should move relative to age, gender, activities, then arrive on mobility or stability solutions best for the person.
