There is a ton of confusion around what these workouts are so allow me to attempt to do this justice and explain what we are looking at: 🤷‍♂️What is this? These workouts have a lot of names: Q work, cardiac output, zone three, or “in the green”. Basically, it’s long slow distance 😱🙀 🩸Why is it so important? If you follow the theoretical research of Dr. Seluyanov you would say that this type of training helps increase eccentric hypertrophy of the left ventricle, meaning your heart stretches further so it can fill with more blood and pumps more blood with more force per beat. This is also referred to as an increase in stroke volume. 📈What are the benefits I’ve seen? For the athletes that do best with this method we have seen: a decrease in resting heart rate, an increase in parasympathetic activity, and an increase in heart rate drops in between bouts in a workout. My gut says the later is due more to the efficiency of the system due to the time spent in “the zone” then it has to do with morphological changes, but I wouldn’t rule out. I’ve just never measured my athletes ventricles to know if they grew or not. 🗓When do we implant this method? I’m the early off season/GOO/“20’s” to (dare I say) build the base for us to be able increase loads. Typically we prescribe it 2-4xs per week for 30-45 min sessions. We will utilize it later in the year as well if athletes are coming off a sickness or we are noticing recovery heart rates are not as “good”. I’ve used the overhead squat because I want my snatch to increase and by creating instability overhead with a load of reps behind it, it will give me confidence to get under most weights. _______________________________________________________________ The overhead squat is a great tool for training the strength and stability of your shoulders and core. It's also a great tool to mobilize your thoracic spine, ankles, and hips, and will help you feel more comfortable at the very bottom of a squat, front squat, or snatch. _______________________________________________________________ The overhead squat can help your body learn how to extend. Your thoracic spine and abdominal muscles must learn how to move backward with as much ease as they flex forward.
