tos ep rewrites/stid rewrite for the wip meme!!!

HIIII ty for asking

this isn't technically a fic per se, it's almost like a half-fic half-meta kind of deal - essentially it's an outline of what could be a fic if i had more time and patience. i did this for the first tos movie here and had a lot of fun doing it, and then i also did a small rewrite of "tholian web" here, and i had SO MUCH FUN DOING THEM but then i got side tracked and haven't done anymore. my plans for other episodes/stid are vaguely as follows:

the enemy within - loved this one conceptually but the crass rape jokes left a real sour taste in my mouth. i'd have less of that (or, if i had it, take it seriously) and more shenanigans where someone can't tell the two kirks apart because. they're both the real kirk!! that's the real point of the episode, right?

the conscience of the king - frankly, there was too much shakespeare here, even though it will always be my fav trek episode of all time. i also thought the lenore thing, while a great twist, could have been a little less "but kirk really secretly loved this woman 20 years younger than him!" and more "man this is crazy fucked up that is trying to honeypot this very young woman and surprise she is doing it back to him." more foreshadowing and drama, you know? the tos version wouldn't have to be gambler's knife but it could be something more than what it was considering the huge effect it had on fandom - i always kinda wished it had the vibes that obsession did.

the galileo seven - i thought this episode treated spock like he was kind of stupid. "why is my first command failing when i've been an asshole to everybody?" he has a human mother! he knows how emotions work! he is not stupid! i also thought there was a missed opportunity: they all talked about how callous it was for him to be picking a man to leave behind to lighten the ship, and he was so obviously going to choose himself, but it never went anywhere. let's do him more justice!

metamorphosis - let's chill with the horrific misogyny and have more fun with the accidental parallel kirk made in his really cool speech. like fuck it this is my edit let's just do spirk

mirror, mirror - this one is actually perfect as it is but i wish we'd had more time to se what the mirror kirk & co were doing in the prime universe.

journey to babel - this one is great but i don't think it takes either of spock's parents to task enough for him turning out like that. also, they tricked us into thinking amanda was the good cop in aos and then have her slap him in tos but then acted like that was just fine? girl, let's get into it

the paradise syndrome - i just want this episode without the heinous racism. please please please. easily easily EASILY my biggest trek disappointment ever

requiem for methuselah/the enterprise incident - these two go together as part of a more complex story based partially on the fact that they originally wanted kirk's breakdown in the latter episode to be a real result of the various um things that happened to him in season 3 and partially by the fact that requiem for methuselah WAS my november 5th and i am being completely serious. i didn't think i would ever feel that way again but i did at the end of that episode. you can read about the general idea here at the end of @maulthots close encounters powerpoint which i helped a little bit with.

honorable mention to episode premises i would have loved in a different context - lights of zetar where spock is the possessed one and an episode totally unrelated to wolf in the fold, the funniest tos ep after tribbles, where an enemy who feeds on fear jumps around the ship possessing people. that could have been great had it been in a serious episode and not been played by piglet's voice actor

and finally, star trek into darkness...everything about this movie was bad, except the warp core thing which was accidentally very very VERY good. so i'd rewrite it from the ground up, starting with recasting khan, because that was just a hateful thing to do. i don't have very many concrete ideas on this yet except you'd HAVE to get assad zaman for khan, right? because he can do that thing where he makes his eyes shake? he would have rocked it.

Oh god. idk if I would say Solas was popular, but I did not like the egg. If DA4 ever gets released, my Inquisitor is going to scramble him in a bad way. I always found Cullen kind of oogy, and the way they race gated his romance did not help.

I didn't dislike Tony Stark, but I sure af hated his stans.

I wonder if a bunch of people (read: angels) made New Year's Resolutions to comment more? Because my comments have also noticeably increased, but I haven't seen myself recced anywhere.

I hope so! I did find a rec post though, but it seems to have inspired a few people to go reading through my archives. Which then inspired me to re-read my first-ever long fic (and first ever big bang) which was on the rec list, to see if it’d hold up to my standards today (I give it a B. Good effort, some weaker spots, especially at the beginning). And of course I read all the old comments too (heh). I miss LJ I’ve got to say. I don’t really think that the decline in comments is necessarily any big moral decline or anything, but the format of LJ (personal blogs, communities, all the sort of stuff that cultures tight-knit groups) fostered a highly reciprocation-based fandom economy. So you had more comments, and gift fics and all of that and I miss it.

Shit has been going down in the Critical Role fandom lately, leaving my poor heart battered, confused, and hopeful all at the same time. With the sudden torrential downpour of feelings, I knew immediately after watching the most recent episode that I had to go looking for fic. For fear of spoilers, I can’t reveal much in this beginning paragraph. What I can say, however, is that if you’re looking for a complex dive into the weaving and grieving of different aspects of families, both found and otherwise, look no further than this fic.

I’m D&D Deprived

So like. Through no fault of any one person, I haven’t played D&D since October/November. My regular DM doesn’t really have time to play anymore, and the campaign I run is down to one established party member. I have very little social life outside of D&D, so I’m really lonely. I have so many characters in my head, but no campaign to play them in and not enough people to start a new campaign with. I want to find a new group to play with. I want to play with my current group, because they’re all amazing ladies and really fun to play with, but for the time being, we can’t really play together. So I want to find a new group, because I really miss playing in a campaign. I miss having contact with people other than my parents, especially at regular intervals and with a creative bent. I miss collaborative storytelling. So here’s my plea to the denizens of this weird blue hellscape: Help me find a group to play with. Preferably all ladies, also preferably with a super-queer bent. All of the characters I make are Hella Gay, and I would really love to feel comfortable playing that in a group. Along a similar vein, I get worn out way more quickly when hanging out with guys; it’s not anything outside of my own innate weirdness. I’m hoping that, because this is the weird blue hellscape that I know it is, I’ll be more lucky in finding a group like that. Please, D&D fans on Tumblr, help a queer lady out: Help me find a group to play in. My messages are open, my ask box is open, please help me out.

La petite mort (E) by @luftballons99: a sweet JonMartin one-shot where they flirt with poetry. It’s incredibly lovely, clever and hot while being mindful of Jon’s asexuality.

Illicio (T) by @that-one-girl-behind-you: multichapter WIP with regularly scheduled updates. A canon divergent AU and The JonGerryMartin fic for me. It reads like an action movie and it will make you feel those butterflies in the stomach. Most of all, I love Gerry's dry sense of humor.

The Magnus Institute vs the 21st Century: a series of emails and IMs (T) by @shinyopals: two epistolary fics that are among the most hilarious things I’ve ever read, with some serious Feels sprinkled in there for good measure. Alasdair Stuart read some of the emails and please, for the love of all that is holy, watch the clips.

Journey to the End; or, a Statement (M) by @saretton: a crossover with The Hollow Knight that I’ve had the utter pleasure of betaing, it’s a melancholy meditation on the End. A quiet, poignant and haunting one-shot.

At the Interim (E) by @rendherring: a series of two JonMartin fics and oof, where to start. The first one was recced to me all the way back in March by a trusted friend, so I read it, fell in love, didn’t bookmark it and promptly forgot title and author. Finding it again last week felt like coming home, I’m not kidding. The second one... Look, I rarely cry while reading fics, it basically never happens. This was the exception.

Convicted Criminals of Thought (E) by @corruptedkid: I jumped on the GerryMichael ship without a second thought, and I can’t recommend corruptedkid’s fics enough. This one in particular has a compelling plot and the coolest Gerry you could imagine, and pre-Distortion!Michael is a sweetheart.

Counting Coffee Spoons (M) by @summerofspock: a JonMartin coffee shop AU that’s everything you could want from a JonMartin coffee shop AU. Still in progress but with frequent updates, the alternate PoV is a real treat, since there’s a hilarious misunderstanding at the heart of their relationship, which I won’t spoil.

Let the Happiness In (M) by @justkeeptrekkin: another JonMartin multichapter AU, this time with Jon as a best-selling author (which is a thing I’m admittedly weak for) and Martin as a baker. Books! Baked goods! A rich cast of secondary characters! Love! Drama! Action! An ace-friendly sex scene! Literally everything you need.

Informed Consent and Other Cosmic Ironies (not rated, but I’d call it a G) by KyaraSaire (@starsandatoms): a very short but hilarious treat. Tim and bureaucracy don’t mix very well.

out in the drowning deep (E) by Wildehack: a post-apocalyptic Daisira one-shot with a fast-paced plot and a few well-placed flashbacks. It’s only 5k but I'd happily read a whole novel out of this.

Doomed from the Start (G) by @peachcitt: AU in which Jon is the new librarian at the high school where Martin teaches English; feelings quickly ensue. A feel-good one-shot that will brighten your day.

Be Your Raincoat (T) by @free-smarcher: a short slice-of-life JonMartin one-shot set before season 1, and one of the first fics I read in the fandom. I think I imprinted on the whole vibe of it: the rain, the sad music, the subtle, understated pining. The sort of thing you read while holding your breath.

Breakable Things (T) by @mia-ugly​: a pre-House of Wax one-shot with mutual JonMartin pining & Beholding powers. This one completely owns my heart.

Well, Tumblr ate the first attempt at this, so I’m a bit late posting this month. March started with binge-watching The Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty with @inmyriadbits, so there’s ten recs for that, seven for The Untamed, and four miscellaneous (Supernatural, Star Wars, Avatar, and BNHA), all under the cut because I couldn’t be bothered sorting them a second time.

Nearly a year after Li Zilong’s failed coup, Wang Zhi writes to his friends in the capital, asking for help. Assembling a team of friends and experts, Tang Fan answers the call. What they find on the border is not what they expected.

Fantastic plotty casefile+get-together that also follows up on a lot of minor characters’ fates and loose plot threads. Hope is an excellent classic hurt/comfort writer, and I’m just gonna gently shove all of her stories in this fandom at my fellow h/c lovers around here.

"Yes, but—" Tang Fan gestures with frantic little flicks of his hand at the man currently wearing Sui Zhou's face and examining the baby goat tethered to one of the courtyard lanterns. "You never said you were a twin."

Sui Zhou's identical twin brother makes an unannounced visit to the SuiTang residence. They may look the same, but they are nothing alike.

Bless this fandom and its many tropes, Sui Zhou having an evil twin is PERFECT, and triedunture exects it with plenty of feels and Tang Fan having to figure out his shit.

Tang Fan really needs to stop acting as bait for serial killers.  It never ends well.

Brilliantly creepy villain in this, who uses Tang Fan’s love of food to really mess with his head while he’s a captive. The aftermath of his rescue is so wrenching and tender.

It appears his mind has taken the tiniest seed of a thought he really had, when Sui Zhou took his candy away and stuck it in his belt, where it stayed like a tiny red flag signaling for Tang Fan’s attention all day - the candy could melt, that close to his skin - and has run completely wild with it.

Tang Fan is not complaining.

In which Tang Fan circa episode 8 fantasizes about Sui Zhou. Very funny but hot, and Tang Fan’s POV is hilariously in-character and whimsical and totally smitten even though he hasn’t quite realized it yet.

Missing scene for episode 10. Lovely h/c -- Hope has a great feel for Sui Zhou’s silences, and Tang Fan starting to figure them out.

There’s quite a bit of fic dealing with the explosion’s aftermath, but this is hands down my favorite. I feel like the fandom often focuses on how Sui Zhou takes care of and cooks for Tang Fan (because of course we do), but this really nails the balance there.

Episode 42 fix-it AU, where Duo’erla tags along to the conspiracy meeting at the brothel and ends up running interference on Qing Ge. Short but it packs a punch. *wistful sigh this fic is not longer or canon*

I don’t have a lot of Wang Zhi fic saved for this fandom because I am immensely picky about his characterization, but this is pitch-perfect: the realities of having sex as a eunuch, Wang Zhi’s difficulties with trust and vulnerability, and the ways Tang Fan continually defies all his expectations.

Wei Wuxian locks his phone and puts it down, blinks at his ceiling, and picks it up again. The pictures are still there.

His first thought is that Lan Zhan meant them for someone else. That he just woke up at—he checks the timestamp—6:30 am on a Sunday and decided to go absolute full nuclear seduction option on some poor boy he met on Grindr, who would now be missing out on the best thing to ever happen to him because Wei Wuxian had a bad habit of distracting—of—oh.

Pieces of last night start to resurface and paste themselves together in his head. He winces.

Lovely modern AU that kicks off with WWX asking LWJ for nudes on a drunken dare from NHS, and then panicking when LWJ *does*. Which is a hilarious premise, but what carries it is the fantastic WWX characterization, as the story peels back layers of trauma and WWX gets caught in an avalanche of delayed gender-and-sexual-identity revelations.

He gave another knife-edged smile.

"We would be willing to offer quite a bit in return for Wen Ruohan's defeat," Lan Xichen admitted. "But I'm afraid we don't know what an immortal such as yourself desires. Please advise us."

The Patriarch waved at hand at the front of the tent. "I want Second Young Master Lan."

(In which the Sunshot Campaign ends through an arranged marriage to the Yiling Patriarch, and Lan Wangji suffers the mortifying ordeal of falling in love with his own husband.)

A++ arranged marriage AU. Cicer’s work often swings too fluffy for me to save, but this one balanced the plot and pining and domesticity and fix-it elements beautifully.

“A-Yuan,” he says, carefully, “did—did you make the flowers grow like this?”

A-Yuan shakes his head in exasperation. “Baba, I said. Doctor Flowers did it.”

“Doctor Flowers,” Lan Zhan repeats, pointing at the tiny plum tree, just to confirm that his son is suggesting a magical tree named Doctor Flowers sprouted overnight and made their tame family project turn into a verdant jungle. A-Yuan nods. “Doctor Flowers,” he confirms. “He’s funny! I like him.”

A mysterious garden blooms on Lan Zhan's rooftop. His internet forum pen pal gives great gardening advice but never seems to sleep. The man who works at the florist, who keeps reviving the plants that Lan Zhan can't seem to keep alive, has a beautiful smile.

These things are related.

     It’s nearing two in the morning when Wei Ying steps out of the club. In the middle of December, the air is chilly at this hour of the night even this far south, and the flimsy jacket thrown over a crop top does very little to keep the sting of the cold out.  

     The hunger is so loud tonight. It’s been a while since Wei Ying properly made out with someone until the guy started to all but hump his leg and Wei Ying could feed off more than just wisps of the yang energy that flowed between them. In more ways than one, he’s been feeding off scraps for so long that he doesn’t even remember what it’s like to feel full.  

Sex demon Wei Ying meets cultivator Lan Zhan in front of a night club on a cold winter night. Things escalate from there.

I read the first story and liked it but felt like it was missing something, so I was delighted to see MRW’s sequel turnup in the MXTX Remix collection. Cool worldbuilding, hot sex, and plenty of feelings.

Tianzixiao doesn't taste as good as it used to, and Wei Wuxian notices. Naturally, Lan Wangji vows to fix it.

(Inspired by the scene in CQL after Wei Wuxian's just been brought back to life and he notices the peanuts don't taste the same.)

“Gone to a Child of the Watch, the Darksaber has,” Grand Master Yoda announces in his creaky little voice. “Peace, there is not, and yet peace, there must be.”

AU where the Republic survived, but the events of The Mandalorian happened anyway (shh don’t worry about it), and Luke (Jedi Knight and notorious trouble magnet) is sent to Mandalore to handle the fallout of Din winning the Darksaber. God, I missed this kind of Luke characterization, and the worldbuilding is great, and the romance (+Grogu) is very sweet.

Phone a Friend by noviembre (Supernatural, gen + background Dean/Cas)

Whoever is answering the phone as "FBI Assistant Director Robert Harvelle," she really hopes they come through for her, because her handcuff-slipping skills are definitely not up to par yet.

In which Dean takes over Bobby’s hotline. Ignores the series ending, because fuck that, and just a thoroughly charming outsider POV with cryptid/legend!Winchesters and the recovering hunting community.

The Cavern and the Koi Pond by Rosie447 (ATLA, gen)

The last thing Zuko remembered clearly was being on the bridge in the North Pole, and losing his grip on the railing with the sudden realization that offering mercy to the man who’d thrown fire at his back the last time he’d beaten him was perhaps not amongst his best ideas.

Or, Zhao takes Zuko's hand and pulls. The Spirit World is not entirely sure what to do with the unexpected stowaway.

Great premise, and the author nails both Zuko’s stubbornness/goodness spectrum and the show’s mix of eerieness and humor when dealing with the Spirit World.

"“So… one more time.” Shouta pinched the bridge of his nose, regretting both waking up this morning and possibly existence in general. “You’re the spiritual avatar of an entirely different world, and in the process of keeping the peace with said spirits, originating from your… dimension, you’ve come to our world to stop the actively malicious versions of your spirits, because our world told your world that something was wrong.” The child shrugged and grinned, looking much too cheery for someone currently in handcuffs. “Pretty much!” he chirped. “Your world spirit is really polite, too. Ours was super grumpy about all the spirits escaping, but then yours said it was ok, so long as I teach her more about them on the way back!”"

Aang chases some renegade spirits across worldly borders and possibly makes some new friends along the way.

Never knew I need Aang getting some Dadzawa action but I REALLY did! If anyone’s going to look at Aang and see a traumatized teen who’s already dealt with too much, it’s gonna be superhero teacher Aizawa with his own set of trauma and a pack of students the same age. Overall the story is excellent, too -- plot! action! spirit nonsense! Aang making friends with everyone in sight like a benevolent tornado! -- but that was the heart of it for me.

For Never Have I Ever: there was only one bed!

THANK YOOOU the last 3 or 4 times i posted one of these i didn't get a response you're a real g.

i have actually never written only one bed, unless you count "only two beds" playing a small but mighty role in the ot3 sleeping arrangements in @cambionverse, during which jesse turner, local antichrist who has spent 3 years in the wilderness running away from hunters because they traumatized him, winds up slipping into ben's bed (who is also a hunter) because there are only two beds, and the other bed is occupied by claire, who has a big flashing neon sign above her head that says NO TOUCHING EVER AND ALSO NO EMOTIONAL CLOSENESS EVER. anyway, ben and jesse wind up hooking up, surprise surprise (dean also once catches them snuggling in the back of ben's pickup, which he takes REALLY well and is super normal about), but then ben dies, and jesse misses sleeping beside someone, and claire misses the sound of ben breathing, so while on their journey to resurrect ben they ALSO begin to share a bed, and...? well. the fic is still being updated.

HOWEVER. if i were writing it properly, as in, the point of the fic, i can think of no better character to do this with than spock. (coin toss on whether or not the other bed sharer is jim or bones - normally i'd do both but i think it'd be hard to do THREE people in one bed.) in that one really racist episode we cannot get into rn spock is like "vulcans don't need sleep as much as humans" even though his ass is half-human, and he is also weird about his personal space. so if there was only one place to sleep and they had to share he would insist he was simply fine Not Sleeping (lie). and eventually his reaction times would slow, his thinking would get muddled...bonus points if it's cold or he's injured or some such thing that makes his resistance even more stupid. like, it's only logical to take the bed offered, mister spock. get your ass in there. snuggle. cuddle. canoodle, even. i think there would have to be something very specific he was afraid of or dreading besides simply the invasion of personal space that involved, ultimately, getting judged by whoever was in bed with him - dream transference? morning wood? trying to octopus his partner in their sleep because he secretly loves cuddling actually? and then that exact thing would have to happen except it would be fine because his bed partner would NOT judge him, the whole point of spock ships is he finally gets a space to be free of that constant criticism that's dogged him all his life. anyway, then spock and whoever would continue to share a bed regularly once they got back to their normal arrangements.
