a bit of your thoughts on character designing? your characters are all so distinct and unique, I've been wanting to ask for awhile how you went about your sillies!

You fool. You idiot. You absolute buffoon. You have no idea what you've done. You have no idea what I am about to unleash unto you all.

Hi i am extremely autistic about character design so obligatory [read more] because I am gonna fucking TALK your EAR OFF about this shit, prepare for a fuckass LOOOOOOOOONG post

So the first rule of character design is to fuck around and have fun :)

Anyway onto the real shit:

P1: Foundational Shit

For starters, I'll link you to a post I made like 3 years ago on this topic, just to get some foundational shit out of the way!

Me personally, I have a very rigid structure I stick to whenever I design characters, which is:

I must know what their personality is like

I must know what their fashion tastes are

I must know what their role in the story is (this one only applies if the character is even apart of a bigger narrative in the first place, obviously. I just am strict and don't make new characters unless I have a purpose for them to serve in my stories so it's hard baked into how I operate as a character designer lol)

By having these in mind when I design characters, shit becomes a WHOLE lot easier/more natural for me. This is because:

The personality of a character can usually be reflected in their design, whether it be a bubbly loud energetic guy who's dolled up in bright colors and playful clothing accessories, a commanding bossy stoic guy who's dolled up in subtle and professional clothing pieces, or even subverting this idea by having a character who acts one way but dresses in a way you'd expect from the opposite.

Knowing what kinds of fashion this character would be into in the first place makes it a whole lot easier to get ideas and look for resources on ways you can style them- Knowing the character would be interested in like, for example, scene fashion makes it far easier to look for the type of clothing they'd wear and find pieces that stand out to you so you can start experimenting with what works or what doesn't for that character.

Knowing the role they play can also help a lot when designing them, much like knowing their fashion tastes can. However, where knowing their fashion tastes helps in looking for visual inspiration, knowing their role in a story can help with their design in a thematic sense; If the character is supposed to be some kind of trouble maker rebellious kid, then you're probably going to wanna make them visually fit the bill (or, again, you might want to subvert the idea of what a rebellious little shithead looks like so you go for the opposite of what people imagine!) Ykwim?

Now with that out of the way, let's get some VISUAL EXAMPLES, using my guys obviously lmao

P2: Additional Stuff to Consider

In addition to the above section, there's also some other things you can utilize to try and make your designs stand out!

One such thing is brainstorming ideas for stand out design elements! Like, something that' makes them stand out from the crowd, or an element of their design that is so specific to them that they just can't be the same character without it. This thing in general is kind of vague by nature so here's some examples using my guys that I think get the point across:

You can also go the extra mile and give them little design details that just add that little extra bit of "oomf" to the character overall. Again, this is kind of vague by nature, but here are some examples I can give with my characters. Some of these doodles are OLD AS HELL so that's why the art style is outdated, but the point still stands!

You can also go the extra mile to try and diversify your designs by doing some structural tests with your characters. What I mean by this is by literally dumbing them down to their most basic attributes, or as I like to call it, "Run the Silhouette & Recognition Test" What I mean by this:

The Silhouette Test: Making a lineup of your characters and blacking them out so they show up as silhouettes, which allows you to check the readability and/or recognizability of your character's design, and if it's unique from your other characters!

Recognition Test: Make a lineup of all of your character's heads and/or bodies, and only draw their facial features/head shape and/or body shape/structure, nothing else. I do this mainly to help myself try to avoid face/body syndrome and I think it works pretty well for me!

Now, for my last extra thing; Remember my point about knowing a character's taste in fashion? This is applies here. Knowing your character's fashion tastes can make designing their main outfit, or any other alternate outfits you make for them, like SUPER fuckin easy. Here's a couple examples with some of my gals:

Raina likes real casual clothes, simple shit like crop tops/tank tops n' jeans, just styled to her liking. She's a simple chick with simple tastes! But there are noticeable touches, like how she has a habit of changing her earrings to match the occasion she's celebrating!

Eb likes grungy clothes, and adds flair to her outfits by dipping into a decora kei inspired style of accessorizing, which compliments her nicely since she loves customizing things to make them her own. She's not fully there with the extravagance of it yet but she's getting there!

Yume likes pastel colors and form fitting clothes, sometimes with loose jackets/robes to keep her cozy, with minimal accessories. She's also simple, but unlike Raina, she doesn't tend to try and go the extra mile with jewelry and/or makeup, not often.

Bank's a baby punk and is still finding her style, but it's clear she likes a lot of leather, spikes, chains, all that kind of shit. Dark colors, with minimal touches of her favorite color (pink lol), and some accessories like earrings, pins, and/or straps are enough to complete a look for her. And of course, any clothing article to obscure her face works for her!

I hope I don't sound fucking nuts I genuinely put way too much time into thinking about all of this stupid bullshit lmao

P3: Actual Examples of Me Working Through the Character Design Process

I figure if I show off examples where I was working on concept shit, that'd help put this into something digestible for y'all lol.

Could you pretty please info dump on your Might Be Over Now, But I Feel It Still au?

This is a month late bc I’ve been saving up brainrot and it’s making my brain go brrrrr soooo :D

The entire premise is based on False saving Ren from mobs on HC sooo if you watch their old eps you might find a plot point or two 😭

Martyn was originally not going to be in because I KNEW the story would spiral into Treebark but in the end fuckass Martyn is simply irresistible to me.

Probably a side effect of watching M*raculous Ladybug: gotta love hero teams with different colour schemes and themes <3 (why did that rhyme)

Minecraft is also weirdly a good setting for hero/villain aus because you HAVE built in enemies of varying difficulties and they are already distinct in terms of visuals and powers. I have so much fun humanising the Mobs and giving them personalities

(I didn’t humanise the Zombie mob because that’s too close to humans and it would cause confusion with Cleo lol)

And it’s also a good basis because in MC, players (heroes) slay the Mobs (villains). The Mobs are specifically created to be enemies and to “make” the players heroes (insert hero of the village achievement). Translating that into a standard hero/villain story has interesting implications that the Mobs are Born Evil and Made To Be The Bad Guys and their very purpose is to elevate people into “heroes”. Which then creates another story of “if the mobs are made to be evil, doesn’t that make the creator/developer/author/storyteller the evil one for imposing such villainy onto blank figures for the purpose of raising up their faves?”

The overworld / nether / end variants of mobs are also reallly interesting for creating different “difficulty levels” of Mobs with even some “boss” Mobs.

(I say all of this without owning a Minecraft game)

Also the thing about hero aus in the mcyt fandom is that they tend to be quite male dominated. Because a lot of the ccs are male. I did not really intend for it to be a all Hermitgals hero team but it came out that way and honestlyyyy I have such a blast writing them. It’s even funnier that the usual hero choices for this fandom (Hotguy and Cuteguy) are the trainees under Pearl. Like it makes sense why they have these silly and matching names 😭

And oh yeah the order in which they join the hero team is based on when they joined HC. Cleo is the OG, followed by False, then Stress, then Pearl (bc she was in hermit adjacent events earlier), and finally Gem.

Having a Cleaning Lady (and her underlings) being specifically in charge of rebuilding solves some logistics problems of damage from fights + fits in with the MC theme of building and crafting + turns it into some tower defence strategy in which Torches ward away Mobs and Mobs can destroy Torches

So yeah MC has a lot of potential for such a setting.

Oh by the way Iskall is gonna appear at some point 👀 he’s like Martyn because he’s just irresistible to me lmfao. They both brute forced their way into the story yayyy

False-Ren dynamic reaches its peak stupidity in which they’re like “yeah I don’t mean that much to the other person 🤡” and they’re both screaming crying shaking sobbing and being pathetic and Not Communicating while being the only people who can match each other’s freak

Overall thoughts: holy SHIT!!! I genuinely didn't think Dragons Rising would keep my interest like it has. I've watched this fuckass show since I was like 11, and by GOD they're keeping it real. The fight scenes are beautifully animated, they're keeping the characterization as close to normal as possible (of course there will be differences, no one can deny it). The story is enthralling and I really, REALLY love it.

Even if she's Japanese and is part of the Japanese hip hop scene I still feel uncomfortable. Bringing this character out when we're supposed to return to Penacony is a recipe for disaster.

Penacony is notorious for fucking up race related plots or making them uncomfortably realistic with their history. The Aventurine lore the Boothill lore the Halovian lore its all just....a lot.

And that doesn't touch on the fact that Penacony is Jazz Age which would've been my people's time to shine and instead it's a conglomerate of every other race ever and then we get this Japanese wannabe rapper as what our last character to round out the cast? Not to mention her design being godawful. It's not streetwear which I think was what they wanted but those fuckass shorts they give every woman ruins it legitimately. Pants would make her so much more street.

Anyways I just have zero faith in her writing tbh. I feel like she's gonna be full of racial stereotypes and I'm just tired. Hell I won't be surprised if she has a blaccent atp despite looking like someone from Punklorde like Silver Wolf......

Ohhhh yeah- when I talked about rappa I also talked about how notorious penacony is for just stealing cultures and stories, because you’re right!! They make them uncomfortably accurate to real!! Life!! Events!! Like events we read in our history books, and then they don’t give any representation, and it’s disgusting. It’s disgusting, it’s disrespectful, it’s fucking gross. Don’t use real people’s pain, and history, and stories just for a silly little sci-fi fantasy game omfg.

Rappa in penacony is great lore wise, but everything else-wise? Omfg I’m so like… I’m nervous too, because they’re gonna make it weird somehow istg.

Penacony is just honestly disappointing with its character lineup in my opinion, because imagine all the characters we could’ve gotten if hyv actually based the characters off of the jazz age. Like. Penacony is like Los Vegas, Hollywood, fucking Disney land, just all put together, there’s very little jazz age influence in a lot of it I feel,time you can see the influence but it’s so like… fleeting almost. It’s disappointing, because they could’ve done so much more, especially cause music seems like such an important thing in penacony- so then make more jazz-y music!! Girl represent black people who MADE the jazz age happen. But no, they decided to be boring. And racist.

I like rappa’s design… but I’d like it more if she had pants, like y’know what I mean? Like oh yes I love the colors, love the hat, but she needs pants. Like Acheron would look better with pants, feixiao would look better with pants, even if you already I feel can’t see her shorts too much, like most fem characters would look better with pants or just things covering their legs more, not a weird one leg covered the other fully bare like they do A LOT.

the start of the main plot is when usagi goes back in time and is forced into the tmnt’s era of time ,,, he accidentally comes across an ancient relic in the woods with spot (these woods are made of massive ancient trees with equally expansive entangled roots , like if the ocean itself had been a forest instead of filled with water it is kinda horrifying) and it takes him and spot back to the tmnt era , before the relic itself was even created

i do plan on making a comic for this so it wont start out immediately like that but itll have some like . oneshots/episodic comics of usagi’s adventures before that happens, similar to usagi yojimbo’s way of storytelling

PERSONALITIES!!!! WEEHEEE!!!!!

he tends not to attach to people or things very much because he knows how easy it is to lose everything, so as much as he enjoys talking to people, he keeps his distance.

Over The Treetops, Across The Seas.

(Keep in mind that this is a heavy WIP, more may be added or changed in the future, when more does get added, I will reblog with the additional stuff. The name isn't set in stone, it is only an idea.)

Protag: a random ass potato bug

Antag: fuckass monsters & the goddamn universe. Also the Evil Moth.

Plot: Random potato bug gets stranded on the shores of Lilac Cove, is taken in by the mayor of the town who so happens to be a very fancy looking butterfly with a monocle and top hat, player arrives in the town, is fed and given shelter, from there, the player realizes that the town is in absolute shambles and it's now up to them to repair the town and help feed the town and take on quests the villagers ask of them. Alongside this whole situation, the player also has to go into dungeons to defeat monsters and bosses. However, beforehand, the player will also need to obtain a certain ancient crystal after completing 15 quests which are requested by the villagers, which will send a permanent light to the Fairy fountain for the player to find. From there, the player will need to secure a key from one of the villagers after completing yet another quest, once the key is obtained and secured, the player will then finally be allowed into the first dungeon to collect parts and items to rebuild the villagers homes, shops, bridges, etc. There are about 15 dungeons in total for the very first town, this is to drag the beginning on for a while so the player can unlock more story lore without feeling rushed to do so or feeling as if it's all being pushed onto them. Adding onto this, the Fairy Fountain acts as a sort of wish fountain, after completing a whole dungeon the player will receive not only the items they have collected, but also receive 20 Petal Gems to give to the Fairy Fountain and in turn, the player will receive a completely random item. However, each item costs 5 Petal Gems so the player will need to spend wisely.

Petal Gems = Fairy Fountain Currency

Seed Gems = Shop currency.

Going back to the beginning, there is also an Evil Moth who happens to be the brother to the Butterfly mayor of the town. The Evil Moth was envious of his brother because his brother was always the favorite child of their family, this led into the Evil Moth invading his brothers town and destroying it, all the while hiding away The Fairy Fountain as some sort of “punishment” for his brother, effectively placing the town in shambles. The Evil Moth will be the final boss the player will have to face after the Evil Moth had destroyed many other towns and hid away each Fairy Fountain.

Also the bugs of each town live in these little hobbit holes and run their shops in them too. That’s important. To me.

Game will also include farming aspects and is heavily inspired by Dark Cloud.

The player will also have the ability to save anywhere and whenever they wish so they don't have to redo things they've already done and they can come back whenever they want. When the player loads into the game if they go into their inventory, a hint at the top of the screen will tell the player what they need to do so the player doesn't forget or get too lost.

Shoutout to my grandma for randomly sending me this idea, without her I never would have thought of this silly little game idea.

Nobody in the town helps the player other than giving them required items, other than that the whole town and other things are rebuilt by the player and the player alone with small bits of guidance here and there.

When the quests are finally complete, the Fairy Fountain will grant you access to a ship to cross the seas in order to reach the final destination. Eventually, after all others towns are rebuilt and all other side quests are complete, the player will need to go on a sea voyage with enemies to fight and they will have to travel to the new land to see the princess, a praying mantis, who's a praying mantis and the king who is also a praying mantis, there is also a whole new dungeon under water where the player will have to defeat to save and rebuild the kingdom. The player will need to save the kingdom so the king will give the player the magical flute that the player will need to play in order to access the secret room where the Evil Moth is. The princess (did I mention she's a praying mantis?) will also accompany the player to heal them and grant them access to the underwater dungeon.

another oc group uhh they all have elemental powers. ❄️ has ice powers and antlers/horns/whatever on his head made of ice that change by category of emotions. 🍒 bends juice like one would bend water and she's kinda insecure about it bc she thinks it's dumb. they escaped a kingdom in backstory and now they're hanging around wherever, which happens to also be where 💎🪨 resides. 💎🪨 is very similar to licorice cookie, master frown, sir pentious, dr doofenshmirtz, that sort of pathetic villain. in fact i solely made him bc i loved the trope(?) lol. im also considering adding more to it? 💎🌸 acts sweet but is more of a risk, for instance. very judgemental of 💎🪨 ofc.

uhhhh malori has a whole story arc ish thing with her. i even have two designs to represent the two different eras of her life. she starts off as a bully alongside 🦎, 🥃, and 🪶, but at some point falls on love with jasmine. she eventually tries to befriend her and also she's stuck between her reputation and her love and idk other stuff happens im still working on it tbh. tho i am considering having jasmine's younger brother play a role in the whole redemption thing,, i might change my mind but she did used to bully him probably. before she ever even laid eyes on jaz. and also i might put him into a coma for reasons and also oc-havers just kinda do that lol teehee

it's gonna be a bit messy cuz i haven't process it yet full but i came here immidiately after finishing cuz this was insaaaane....

the pacing was great, yk how it kinda starts off a little unserious but then it takes a darker turn

loki reassuring & hyping up victor was so 🥹

i was getting pretty anxious that loki may actually kill sylvie since not only that would have been neccessary for the plot, but also could serve as some sort of "metaphor/symbolism" for reincarnation that loki have to kill his old self (yes i say old cuz sylvie technically still has the similar negative traits loki did in 2012 and has overcome them by now) but i'm glad they found another way... pheww 😮‍💨

when loki said "for you, for all of us" i think we all had flashbacks to one of the saddest scenes of loki in thor (2011) when he was talking to odin and-
