today I got gas, washed and vacuumed my car, got an oil change and got the brakes checked (they're good! same with brake pads, wanted to check before Driving On Dirt Roads and Up Mountain Chain season began), scheduled a repair for next week, cleaned dishes, went to the bank, and took out the compost.
...and then when all of that was done i did the thing I'd been procrastinating and set up my laptop.
For over four hours.
Involving three different chats with people who couldn't figure out how to solve my software problem.
...which I then solved on my own.
currently hiding under blankets, uninterested in emerging

PSA for anyone that uses Photoshop Elements for CC-making and was thinking of upgrading— from Elements 2025 onwards, licenses are no longer perpetual, being replaced by three-year licenses instead.
For a paid alternative, I highly recommend Affinity Photo (currently 50% off for Black Friday– £33.99 in the UK).
Affinity was acquired earlier this year by Canva, so there's every chance it will move to a subscription itself in the future, but I always cursed myself for never getting CS6 back in the day (hence why I'm making this post! xD).
Of course, there's also the free, open-source alternatives Krita and GIMP- the latter of which is currently testing what may become version 3.0.
(Whilst I'm on the subject I might as well also mention 3D Coat Textura– Pilgway usually has a Black Friday sale too, but it's a bit pricier and more of a niche program than the ones listed above.)

Are there any storyboarding apps that are good and not super expensive or subscription based
#Chatterbomb#I used notability and really liked it but then it wanted me to pay for a subscription#I liked the select few pens (pencil pen and highlighter) and the duplicate function was pretty simple! I liked that I could add an mp3 to#Listen to the audio while boarding and that I could scroll through the pages#I think I would like if the eraser could be more selective with what it erased (like just the pencil or highlighter or pen)#I didn’t like how the quality dropped in transport to a pdf#But notability would’ve been good if it didn’t have a usage limit!! If it was just a one time purchase I’d reconsider but it’s bullshit to#Make a note taking software subscription based!!#I didn’t want to use procreate because it feels too professional to just scribble the ideas down#it also doesn’t have as nice of page layout and it doesn’t select strokes. Which is fine for an art program but I’m looking for something m#Probably more vector based. So the quality isn’t at risk I guess? Would a vector program be better for storyboarding?#Then again I like the pencil for the drawings themself. Idk#Is there a simple solution outside of add making an affordable storyboarding software to my to do list#Storyboarding#should I post on reddit#I feel like that might be too difficult with how closed off it is due to the karma system#art advice#art help#are any of these tags going to help#Boords.com is really good for pdfs (very good formatting imo and clean) it’s just a matter of what software can I use them best in

Romeo@Rimi: Hey Rimi, Guess you made it to the party as well. And I'm liking the mask, I bet Vinny is gonna like it too. So you got any plans for the event? I'm still trying to find out what to do here and the only thing I got are these candied berries that the Ogerpon kid mention earlier.
Tumblr media
Thanks, Romeo! Of course he would, really loved his Rockruff onesie... Our plans? Well, we came here to play games, talk to different folks, eat different types of food. But what about the latter... Well...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Noey gave me some candies of different varieties earlier while I've talked to someone. Also this Ogerpon told me that there's TONS of different games here. There's Goldeen scooping, ring toss, etc. But so far we've only played the ring toss. Come on, Romeo! Wanna join the fun?
Rimi smiles with a great optimism.

If your Microsoft 365 Subscription Price went up, this is relevant to you:
youtube
Hoping this saves someone some $$$$. In short, Microsoft auto-upgraded people on the Basic tier of their 365 subscription to the middle tier that includes copilot (with no option to turn it off), renamed the middle tier to Basic, and renamed the original Basic tier AND hid it from the subscription types options, in hopes that people won't realize they've just been auto-"upgraded" to a more expensive tier that also allows them to train their AI on your work. If you contact Microsoft support and are stubborn, or possibly (according to some of the comments on that youtube video) if you turn off auto-renewal and then look at options for re-subscribing, you can still get the original Basic tier that you had before, for the same price as you had before. Given that they are obviously not trustworthy has a subscription service, though, I'd recommend instead trying the LibreOffice (my personal favorite) or OpenOffice software suites (including Word Processor software, Spreadsheets software, etc) - both of which are 100% free. And both of which can save documents in Microsoft 365 formats so that others can still open and read your documents using Microsoft products.

Six Some Sentences Sunday Saturday
and also A MOODBOARD. I am not even sure what those are for but people on AO3 have them on multipart works so I assume they are essential to the craft.
I'm hiding it behind a cut because although I know how to Make Internet Arts I am not especially good at it - I know the keyboard shortcuts I just don't know how to use them well.
Tumblr media
When Sylvie catches sight of her reflection in the long mirror behind the bar she can’t resist giving herself a victorious smile; she’s here to celebrate and she damn well deserves that celebration. Finally she has found a buyer for her latest piece of work, and if all goes well it’ll bring at least a few months of financial security before she has to start worrying about the bills again.  She knocks back the remainder of her margarita and orders another, and since the bartender keeps unsubtly staring at her chest she takes her time searching in her purse for the payment, just in case this prompts him to offer this one on the house.  He doesn’t (well, it was a bit of a long shot) but someone else does – a tall, pale, dark-haired man steps in to play Prince Charming instead, and on first impressions alone this unexpected understudy might be good for more than one free drink; she wishes she had ordered something more expensive.
(No prizes for guessing that her "latest piece of work" is in some way fraudulent, or for guessing who the buyer is.)

We are not buying alcohol and drinking to take the edge off tonight. We are not. We've had the worst day and tomorrow is gonna be the same or worse and we're very angry and tense, but we're not doing it. We're going home and we're gonna jerk off before and after dinner if that's what it takes but we are not drinking.

Subscription for a Paintbrush
A painter might feel like a paintbrush is an extension of themselves, developing muscle memory and skill to create beauty. But what happens when that tool is owned by someone else, and they charge rent? What if they've decided to take it away from you? What if they've decided your art isn't yours?
As a 3D artist, I was professionally trained in using Autodesk Maya, a 3D modelling and animation application. I became really good with it, and grew to love it! I used it at work and at home for my own projects. It became muscle memory, an extension of myself, an organ for expression.
The full version of Maya is ludicrously expensive at CA$2,500 a year! So I had to settle for a cheaper version called Maya LT. It was missing some features, but I wasn't using them at the time so it worked out. I paid CA$360 a year for 3 years.
COVID struck, and I lost my job. I had to use savings to continue paying my license for an additional 2 years, yet in that time they provided no updates. I was just paying for access.
In 2022, Autodesk announced that Maya LT was being discontinued, replaced by a new version called Maya Creative. Instead of a subscription, you'd buy "tokens", spending one token for 24 hours of use. You could only buy tokens in bulk, the cheapest being 100 tokens for CA$405, and they expire after one year.
I've never seen such a predatory, disgusting pricing model for a piece of software. It's like an arcade machine! I thought subscriptions were bad enough! I refused to participate.
Despite spending nearly two grand, the tool I love is going to deactivate itself soon, and I don't have any say in it. It's bytes will still be on my computer, but it'll refuse to launch. Maya LT had a proprietary file format, so all of my projects will be unusable.
It feels like I'm losing a part of myself.
I feel like a fool for even letting this happen in the first place. I let myself become attached to a tool I didn't even own, run by a faceless corporation! My own art is being held hostage! How unfair! Should it even be called a tool, or a service?
I've been avoiding 3D art lately, focusing on programming and game development. My friends and I started working on a game in the Unity Game Engine. A couple months in, Unity's owners were saying and doing some unsavoury things, so we swapped to the Godot Engine. I feel incredibly lucky that we did because of the Unity drama that followed.
Unity wanted to start charging a fee for every user that installed your game. They wanted this to apply to every Unity game retroactively. This is obviously a stupid idea, and they walked it back, but it begs the question: Do you even own the game you developed? It seems like you don't.
I don't want to let myself fall into this trap again. I feel like we as artists form a personal relationship with our tools, and it shouldn't have to be an abusive one! I want to own my art and tools! That shouldn't be difficult as a digital artist! I've been recommended some proprietary subscription based "tools" by friends recently, and I refuse to use them. I won't let this happen to me again.
I'm going to use as much open source software as I can. Open source software is the only software you can truly "own". You have access to the code, and you can do with it as you please! It's often democratically run by the community! You can distribute it to your friends, and it's not piracy! There's a ton of excellent open source art software out there, and I encourage you to check it out!
Autodesk broke my heart. When I get back into 3D art, I'm going to be learning Blender.
